2. 2
Conventional Vs unconventional
Conventional sources of energy are non renewable and being
used for long time.
90% of our energy demands are met by conventional fossil
fuels.
They have been depleted to great extent.
While ,
Unconventional hydrocarbon sources are relatively new in the
way they exist in geological formations.
They are relatively difficult to produce and high technology
required.
Some of them are:-
Coal Bed methane(CBM)
Shale gas/ oil
Gas hydrate
Tight gas
3. 3
The methane (CH4) which cause
green house effect can be source of
clean and environment friendly energy
source and ensure mining safe for
gassy mining.
Coal bed methane (CBM) is found in
coal seams, cleats, fracture and joints.
Coal bed methane is generated either from a biological process as a result
of microbial action or from a thermal process as a result of increasing heat
with depth of the coal.
Methane is adsorbed onto microscopic surfaces within coal particles and
dissolved phase in formation water.
Currently ONGC is producing CBM in Jharia ,Bokaro and Damodar valley.

4. 4
Gas hydrate or methane hydrate are ice like
crystalline minerals that form when low molecular
weight gas (CH4,Co2..) combines with water and
freezes into solids.
Occurs in low temp high pressure zones such as
continental shelf and beneath permafrost.
In India KG basin is most
promising reserve of gas
hydrate.
Not stable at normal pressure and temperature.
1 cubic meter gas hydrate contain 164 cubic
meter gas equivalent that is why it a great
source of energy.
Although it has risk of release of green house
gas and submarine landslide but good future
resource.

Gas Hydrate
5. 5
In India promising shale gas reserves are
Cambay, Gondwana and indo-gangetic
basins.
Shale gas is natural gas
occurring within shale
formation which acts as source
as well as reservoir.
It mainly constitute of CH4 and
originates from organic
constitutes present in shale
rock.
Shale has low permeability so
hydraulic fracturing can be
used for production.

6. 6
Tight gas
Natural gas produces from reservoirs such as sandstone and limestone
having very low permeability less than 0.1 milli Darcy
They are not different in
chemical composition from
conventional gas but differ in
geologic formations they exist.
Occur within entered or deep
basinal setting.
Can be produces by hydraulic
fracture, under balanced drilling
etc.
Indian potential are in Cauvery , vindhyan
and assam-akran basins.
