• In our society, certain professions can be dangerous or contrary to the public interest. As a
result, it has been the accepted practice to regulate the activities of the groups
• Self-regulation is a privilege delegated to a professional group only when the public can best
be served by regulating the profession.
• Why it’s privilege?
• Governments trust professionals can put aside their self-interest in favour of promoting and
promoting the public interest. This follows from the ethos of professionalism which has as an
important aspect a commitment to an ideology of service.
