All Rights Reserved Professionals Involved in the Intervention Process: The Medical Team • Nurses and Nurse Practitioners are often the first medical contact with the family; they can assess parent/child interactions, obtain medical and developmental history, provide parent training, and screen for risk factors, including prenatally • Physicians may report, substantiate, and/or consult on maltreatment through X-rays, physical exams and other diagnostic procedures. • Medical Social Worker: provides treatment planning and coordination after hospital discharge

All Rights Reserved Professionals Involved in the Intervention Process: The Legal Team • Police officers’ roles vary state to state; they may take and investigate reports, support protective service agencies, respond to emergencies (child abandonment and severe abuse or neglect), and look for runaways • Abusive & neglectful parents are seldom arrested, except when the injury to the child is extremely severe.

All Rights Reserved Professionals Involved in the Intervention Process: A Total Team Approach • Form a community-wide multidisciplinary team with the medical, legal, educational, and mental health professionals, including racial/cultural representatives of the population served. • Religious communities have been developing policies in staff screening, reporting protocols, and training of child abuse prevention • Any member of a community may recognize and report child maltreatment (some states mandate).
