A Collaborative Approach: Child
Advocacy Centers
• Interdisciplinary approach: a variety of professionals
working together to help maltreated children and their
families.
• The Child Advocacy Centers:
– Provide child-friendly setting
– Multidisciplinary team provides competent and
culturally sensitive interviews, & evaluations.
– Coordinated and comprehensive intervention plan
& services are provided

Professionals Involved in the Intervention
Process: The Medical Team
• Nurses and Nurse Practitioners are often the first medical
contact with the family; they can assess parent/child
interactions, obtain medical and developmental history,
provide parent training, and screen for risk factors,
including prenatally
• Physicians may report, substantiate, and/or consult on
maltreatment through X-rays, physical exams and other
diagnostic procedures.
• Medical Social Worker: provides treatment planning and
coordination after hospital discharge

Professionals Involved in the
Intervention Process: The Legal Team
• Police officers’ roles vary state to state; they may take and
investigate reports, support protective service agencies,
respond to emergencies (child abandonment and severe
abuse or neglect), and look for runaways
• Abusive & neglectful parents are seldom arrested, except
when the injury to the child is extremely severe.

Professionals Involved in the Intervention
Process: The Educational Team
• Teachers may hesitate to report in fear of damaging the
relationship with the child and/or the family
• Some schools designate one person, often a school
nurse, as the point person to interface with protective
services and protect the teacher’s relationship with child
• Administrators and Pupil Personnel Services (school
nurse, guidance counselor, psychologist) may also take
part in the Child Protection Team

Professionals Involved in the Intervention
Process: The Mental Health Team
• Psychologists, psychiatrists, clinical social workers, &
therapists.
• Mandated reporters under the child abuse reporting
laws.
• Some argue that the reporting laws jeopardize the
therapeutic relationship between therapist and client.
• Provide valuable resources to protective service
agencies: validation, referral, & treatment.

Professionals Involved in the Intervention
Process: A Total Team Approach
• Form a community-wide multidisciplinary team with
the medical, legal, educational, and mental health
professionals, including racial/cultural representatives of
the population served.
• Religious communities have been developing policies in
staff screening, reporting protocols, and training of
child abuse prevention
• Any member of a community may recognize and report
child maltreatment (some states mandate).

Case Management and Planning
• Intervention must be a planned, purposeful, and
goal-directed activity.
• Case worker, with the family, develops goals and
helps the family to recognize the challenges.
• Case plans must be specific to determine
– what is needed
– time frame, for a point of reference & motivation
– the outcomes in 4 domains: child-level, parent,
family, & environment

All Rights Reserved Professionals Involved in the Intervention Process: A Total Team Approach • Form a community-wide multidisciplinary team with the medical, legal, educational, and mental health professionals, including racial/cultural representatives of the population served. • Religious communities have been developing policies in staff screening, reporting protocols, and training of child abuse prevention • Any member of a community may recognize and report child maltreatment (some states mandate).

All Rights Reserved Case Management and Planning • Intervention must be a planned, purposeful, and goal-directed activity. • Case worker, with the family, develops goals and helps the family to recognize the challenges. • Case plans must be specific to determine – what is needed – time frame, for a point of reference & motivation – the outcomes in 4 domains: child-level, parent, family, & environment
