Comparing The One And Only Ivan
My overall thoughts about The One and Only Ivan is I really enjoyed the story. First, the story was a
roller coaster of emotion from highs to lows, especially learning how Ivan was taken from his
mother, his twenty–seven years in captivity to Ivan living with a family of silverbacks. Second, I
enjoyed how the author is showing young readers that even though we might come from different
backgrounds, cultures and species we should help one another. For example, the way Ivan keeps his
promise to Stella by helping Ruby get to a better life in a zoo. I also enjoy how the characters
display sacrifice and commitment, example George helping Ivan when George knows Mack will fire
him and he will not be able to take care of his sick wife and daughter and Ivan's commitment to his
paintings after seeing Mack with the claw–stick threating to abuse to Ruby the way other animals
have been abused. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The conversations between Ivan and Bob are some of my favorite parts in the story. Bobs disdain for
humans, the fact he wants to be homeless ever since he was abandoned by a previous owner and
Ivan need of acceptance and help from the humans. In the end Bob, Ivan and Ruby all find homes. I
truly cared for these characters especially Ivan after watching the documentary "the Urban Gorilla" I
was mad, distraught and happy that the author gave captive animal a voice that needs to heard or we
will lose them all. After reading this story, I really connected it to blackfish the documentary of
captive killer whales that need to be

Life Changing Moment In Life
When reminiscing on my past I'm able to recall the certain moments, which have led to a path where
I find myself at a cross road. Searching through the databases of my mind, I'm reminded of
cherished memories, though I attempt to pinpoint the times in which I have been successful in my
decision making; I cannot help but deliberate whether my past conveyed such a challenging
decision. My future is unpredictable, and my choices will decide my prolonged existence; positive
or negative I must act on them now, or else I will miss the train to my forthcoming. Through the life
changing moments, which led to my admiration for the ones close to me; I have found what
identifies me as an individual. Nonetheless, will it be enough for the rapid pace at which my future
emerges?
Life changing, it's a term to identify an event that will forever transform someone, and the life they
are currently living; sounds self–explanatory, though it isn't such a simple phrase. Considering the
expression; life changing is watching a friend fight cancer, battling each day not knowing if she will
get better. Moreover, Parents who are combating a recession, struggling to generate money with the
profession they find themselves in; moving from house to house trying to stay joyful to a child who
may not identify the extent of the situation. Trails such as these have caused my life to be
significantly altered. However, these events are only a minor fraction of my narrative. For instance,
I've helped lead a movement against bullying, being triumphant with the results. Furthermore, I had
the opportunity to represent my school at a World Leadership Conference, being able to express
heartache, happiness, and love to individuals, some who have experienced horrible tragedies, was
such an eye–opening experience. These events in my life have erupt a fire in my soul, and striving to
build upon each situation will only be beneficial for my future endeavors.
Reflecting these life changing moments, I come to a realization that not all memories are so
influential, but more of a comforting feeling. My family vacations to Walt Disney World helped
bring imagination and inspiration inside of a young boy's mind. Playing on my childhood play–set

Descriptive Essay About Lost Or Abandoned
Lost or Abandoned?
Have you ever gotten lost? I have. Or maybe I was abandoned? I don't know. I was at Space
Academy, at The Space and Rocket Center in Alabama, attending an activity with other campers. In
my group, there were three girls. I saw them all day and night because I was in the same dorm as
them. We got along pretty well, until I got lost. Or maybe my group abandoned me... But let me step
back a bit...
It was an ordinary day at Space Camp: wake up at 7, go brush my teeth, get dressed, and li ne up. I
went to the rides I usually go on with my group. We had fun, but then it got really hot so we had to
go inside. We went to a movie then we went to lunch. I had an ordinarily fantastic lunch (like
everyday), and my friends each had a couple cans of Nos. Nos is a drink that has 260 grams of
caffeine, which is a lot. (I mean like 20 cups of coffee a lot) I didn't have any, and they all became
inordinately giddy. They were all laughing and jumping and their eyes became extremely dilated. I
laughed harder than my brain could handle.
Then we went to an indoor ride I put my stuff down and got on, it was a lot of fun!
Then it happened.
The counselor told us to get our stuff and I looked down to grab my stuff. I had lost something so I
looked around. And when I couldn't find it, I finally looked up. Everyone was gone...
I was terrified...
I kept calm and went to find someone who could help me. I found someone who worked there and I
said, "I got separated from my group. My group

My Memorable Journey
A Memorable Journey With A Friend
On the date of October 27th 2017, me and my friend Tovah were on our way to a cabin in Branson
for her birthday. While we were there we went shopping at Tanger Outlets and we went to The
Haunted Lost Cavern at Top Of The Rock. Now in the essay below you will read about my
memorable journey with my friend Tovah.
It was seven o'clock so when we got there so we just watched TV then went to bed. The next day,
we went shopping at Tanger Outlets and while we were there we got some awesome fudge. We went
to Bath and Body and I bought six bottles of hand sanitizer and gave one to Tovah. I also bought a
hand sanitizer holder and it came with two so I gave one to Tovah and I kept one for myself. When
we were done shopping we ate lunch then went back to the cabin. We started a fire in the fireplace
but the vent was closed so the cabin filled up with smoke that made Tovah sleepy so she took a nap.
When it was about nine o'clock, we woke her up and we went to Top Of The Rock. We were there to
go to the Haunted Lost Cavern. We only had to wait a little bit until we could get on the bus to go to
the cavern. On the way down a few people scare you. When you get to around the area of the
cavern, people are there so they can take your picture.
When you first get in there's a crazy lady chases you around with a fake leg. After you get past her it
was just a bunch of mechanical things. When you get to another part of the cavern there are sheets

There is Only One Cleopatra
Almost every pharaoh–queen was named Cleopatra, yet only one is ever thought of, Cleopatra Thea
Philopator VII, "The Goddess and Beloved of her Father". Every moment of her life from 69 BCE
until August 12, 30 BCE was a story larger than life, epic in scale, and over the top in its grandeur.
As the last reigning pharaoh of the Ptolemaic Dynasty in Ancient Egypt, she is remembered for her
ability to rule as a political genius and a strong female leader living in a male–dominated world
despite all odds being against her. Firstly, Cleopatra grew up in the Ptolemaic palace living a life of
luxury, yet her subjects worshipped and even felt connected to her as more than just their queen.
Secondly, after Cleopatra was exiled by her incompetent brother, Ptolemy XII, she came back with
an army of mercenaries and took back Egypt to be its sole and more qualified ruler. Lastly,
Cleopatra went to any means to secure her power and to ensure her nation's financial and political
strength; therefore what started off as a strategic alliance with Rome slowly became her dominance
over most of the ancient world. Pharaohs for centuries had put themselves on a pedestal, those in the
Ptolemaic Dynasty rarely ever connected with their subjects, but Cleopatra defied this ideology. The
Ptolemies were descendants of a general in Alexander the Great's military and therefore were
aligned with Greek and Macedonian traditions. Previously, Greek rulers and Egyptian subjects
caused great division among the

There is Only One Ludwig van Beethoven
"What you are, you are by accident of birth; what I am, I am by myself. There are and will be a
thousand princes; there is only one Beethoven" Summing up the philosophy of the great composer,
Ludwig van Beethoven, the quote also reflects of the time in which he lived. Beethoven firmly
believed in the dignity of man and that one should live in complete freedom without limits. Looking
into the three parts of his life, early, middle, and end, one will learn about the inner life of the great
composer. During his early life, his musical capabilities shined through. Born in Bonn, Germany in
1770, his family life started out rough. His father, a court musician, struggled as a drunkard, leaving
his young son to fend for himself. Although caring, Beethoven's mother lived frail and sickly for the
whole of her life. Although he began studying music at age 4, his lessons did not bring him joy.
Often late at night, his dad would come home from patronizing local taverns and force the boy to
learn music until dawn. Drinking excessively just seemed a natural part of his life. As a young child,
he often battled depression, which one can understand why by simply looking at his home life.
However, some noticed his skills and employed him as an organist. In 1787, at age 17, he traveled to
Vienna and played for the great composer, Mozart who accurately predicted the future greatness of
the young man. While in Italy, Beethoven received a call to return home to see his mother. Soon

How To The Marshall M. Fredericks Sculpture Museum
I went to the Marshall M. Fredericks Sculpture Museum for my art experience project. I was
impressed with the amount of statues I was able to see in one place. A majority of them seem to
have been created and donated by the Fredericks family themselves. As I said before the amount of
statues in this little space is impressive, however my first impression is the feeling of
claustrophobia.
The statues are packed in fairly tight and the space overall doesn't seem to be well utilized. The
room it was in did however provide an ample amount of natural light from the large windowed wall
to the north. This coupled with the recessed lighting did a good job of lighting the statues facing the
northern wall. Unfortunately though, some of the statues are facing the southern wall and lose a little
detail to not being as well lit from only the recessed lighting. The contrast between well–lit and
dimly–lit does lend to contrast in light and shadow for the statues facing the east and west walls. The
contours of these statues are much more defined because of the line of contrast so they seem to draw
me in the most. I also get this cold feeling, even though the floors are more of a warm/neutral color.
I believe this is due to the lack of a large amount of the statues not being colored at all. The few that
are colored are just antiqued bronze so they are mostly that powder blue/green color. The lack of
color though, I feel, is intended to make a point.
It seems as though the artist meant for

Theme Of The One And Only Ivan
Newbery Award winning books, and Newbery Honor books, are children's literature that have
exceeded in one or more area. These areas include: Theme or concept, accuracy, clarity and
organization of information, development of plot and characters, the delineation of setting, and the
appropriateness of the style of the literature. The One and Only Ivan exceeds these categories in
more than one area. This fiction story is written for students in grades 3–5 and 6–8 at a guided
reading level S (Scholastic, 2018). Katherine Applegate writes this story with a clear concept
throughout. This children's literature clearly conveys the idea of what it means to treat others kindly,
and how to be humane to not only humans, but to all living creatures. Not only is her concept
defined throughout the story, the portrayal of the setting of the story is also appropriate and ... Show

We are introduced to the main characters of the story here, Ivan the Silverback gorilla, who is also
the narrator of the story, introduces us as the reader to his home inside the mall. The setting is
described from Ivan's point of view, and here we realize just how lonely his life is. According to
Ivan in the story he describes his setting as "I am lucky my domain has three windowed walls. I can
see the whole mall and a bit of the world beyond: the frantic pinball machines, the pink billows of
cotton candy, the vast and treeless parking lot" (Applegate 2012, p. 14). This gives us an indication
as the reader how miserable yet accurate the life of a circus gorilla is. A gorilla should have the
freedom of the wild which we see that Ivan and his fellow characters do not have further exceeding
in the accuracy of the setting of the story. Applegate is able to give a clear delineation of the setting
which ties into the overall concept of her story which was that of humanity and what it means to be
compassionate for other living

Pain In The Giver
Imagine living in a perfect society, and hearing that someone has been selected for the most
important job. There is extreme pain to go with this job, but pain is something never felt before. The
assignment of being the communities next Receiver is a punishment, not an honor. While being the
new Receiver of Memory, Jonas receives a large amount of pain from different experiences in his
memories. Jonas realizes that his training for being the new Receiver is going to be very lonely and
he is worried if he is going to be able to hang out with his friends. Jonas now realizes that his life

Jonas, after the Ceremony, now realizes that he will be different then the rest of his friends, "Now,
for the first time in his twelve years of life, Jonas felt separate, different."(62) Jonas now is different
then other kids. He realizes that his assignment has different requirements than the other children.
He also learns he has the power of "seeing beyond". Jonas saw Jonas and his friends playing a game
of war , and then realized, "In his mind, Jonas saw again the face of the boy who had lain dying on
the field and had begged him for water."(126) Jonas, with the memory of war, understands that the
game war is the same as the memory of the boy who was lying on the ground dying. He realizes that
things that seemed harmless, now seem so scary and sad. Also, when Jonas and the Giver first meet
each other and start talking about different things and the Giver says this,"Jonas, you and I are the
only ones who have feelings."(144–145) It's easy to think that being different or thinking differently
is ok, but when you look at the facts, Jonas and the Giver have no one to share how they feel with,
or what they are experiencing in the training. The Giver says that he and Jonas are the only ones
who will feel feelings. In the community everything is perfect there is no wrong and no differences.
Jonas will feel different about life because he will have memories of imperfect

Analysis Of Hatchet By Gary Paulsen
The book Hatchet by Gary Paulsen is about a young man that was forced to leave his old life behind
him when his plane goes down somewhere in the Canadian wilderness.Brian is on his way to visit
his dad in Canada due to a divorce in the family. While he is sitting in the plane the pilot of the plane
suffers from a heart attack and the plane goes down into a lake.Brian is forced to overcome task
after task after task in order for him to survive. From making fire to building a bug proof shelter each
of them come down to one thing, the will to survive.
The setting of the story takes place on a L shaped lake in the middle of the Canadian
wilderness. There was no given time range for when the story takes place but estimated by the
context it is sometime in the late 1900's.The theme of the story is survival because the whole entire
book is based on Brian doing everything that is possible in order for him to survive. Such as making
a bowstring out of his shoelace or making a raft from a bunch of torn down logs in order to gain
possession of a survival kit.The mood of the story is suspenseful because you didn't know whether
Brian would die in this chapter or continue to live.Another mood for the story is happy because
Brian was very lucky when he had a hatchet on him which was 75 percent of why Brian
survive,Brian also had a good environment for hunting tiny game, and fishing which was a very big
plus on his part.
Brain contained some very good character traits while he was in

The Reflection Of My Spilio : My Portfolio
My portfolio is more about my everyday life, my opinions, and a little bit of history, it is also
something I wrote to have fun before leaving this class. It may not make a lot of sense at first but
once I finish I hope you guys understand my purpose. The reason why I choose a roller coaster for
my cover page is because senior year can have its ups and downs and it's going to end sooner than
you think, so you can either have your hands up and have fun or you can be scared. There is no point
in closing your eyes and being scared when we will all end up at the same place. I know that I don't
say much in this class. Mainly because I have nothing to say, but today I do. I decided to write this
speech on how I've grown up and how I changed as a person after taking this class. Being in this
class has helped me grow as a writer so now I can explain what I feel. When you understand that
everyone is their own person and you try to think of them for who they are, you'll start to grow up as
the person you want to be. I've learned many things in this class but one thing that sticks out is that
you can't really start a paper knowing the ending of it. So I'm going to start off with one of the
assignments, A day in the life. Then after I will write about whatever comes to my mind. Also what
I'm about to read is in third person so whenever I say "he" I am referring to myself. He wakes up to
his dad yelling at him to get up. He looks at his phone and sees that it's 8:00am, he has 30

Linda entered Melina's room and saw the note she left. She was heartbroken. Crying from her
mistakes and realizing what she should have done. Went to find Melina all alone to not track
attention to others. Melina walks to the opera and hiding her trails. She was alone in the dark night
and trying to find her way. It was difficult to see where she was headed. Instead of walking around
in circles she stayed put and slept in a alley just for tonight. Morning came and Melina was up.
Found the opera and entered.
"Okay time to eat." She grabbed food from her backpack and started to eat.
During breakfast she was thinking of ideas on how to get 200 million dollars. Her ideas involved her
working in a car wash service or be an employee for a cafe, but she was young. Nobody would want
her as a worker. Then an idea struck in.
"I can put on a show! But not just any show a music show!", exclaimed Melina.
She looked around the place to see any instruments lying around, but there was nothing. Then she
felt something in her pocket it was her music box. She played it and something appeared on stage.
There was a line of instruments and were playing themselves. She felt weirded out by first, but it
was the right tools to help her in achieving the money.
"Now it has to be somewhere where my grandma can't find me and that there is a lot of people. The

Chapter Thirteen I turned in my theme on Mr. Syme's desk. It had turned out to be 70 pages. Once I

it might take me a while to read this. I'll try to get it back to you in a couple weeks. If it's good, it
could bring your semester grade up to a B." "Thanks, sir!" I rushed home to tell Darry the good

Why?" "It wasn't a piece of glass that you saw; you saw this." I held the blade out to Soda. "Maybe
Darry dropped it or something. I bet he's fine," Soda reasoned. It seemed like he was trying to

on it." "I'm mostly worried that it might be Darry's blood," I admitted. Soda looked at me

One And Only Campaign Analysis
The CDC formulated a response to this urgent public health crisis by establishing its 'One & Only'
campaign which was designed to target education and awareness efforts to improve public health
(Premier, 2011). The campaign title comes from the slogan "One Needle, One Syringe, Only One
Time." (CDC, 2015). This campaign set its sights on eradicating outbreaks of infectious disease that
has resulted from administration of unsafe medical injections (Premier, 2011). The CDC has also
focused on empowering healthcare providers and patients by demanding that in the interest of public
safety, all medical injections dispensed must comply with basic safe injection practices, every time,
and for every patient (CDC, 2015). Since 2009, the campaign has ... Show more content on

These are the states which have been most heavily impacted by outbreaks associated with unsafe
injection practices (Dolan, Felizardo, Barnes, Cox, Patrick, Ward, & Arias, 2010). As these state
pilot campaigns have been evaluated, the One and Only Campaign organizers plan to expand to
subsequent states and then eventually form a nationwide operation. The World Health Organization
(WHO) is also a stakeholder in addressing this healthcare issue of safe injection practices from a
global perspective so it is likely that information obtained from evaluations by the CDC and SPIC
will be utilized worldwide (Manetto, 2009).
Goals and Objectives of the Campaign The CDC and SIPC identified the primary goal of the 'One &

protect all patients (CDC, 2015). The CDC's goal is to for everyone to insist on using one needle,
one syringe, one time for every injection (CDC, 2015). The three specific aims of the One & Only
Campaign include:
Increasing awareness among the general populace and providers of healthcare services of safe

Racial Discrimination And Its Effects On American Culture
If there is one thing I have noticed during my, admittedly, short sixteen years, it is the racial
discrimination and obvious bigotry of the those who are not "white". Stereotypes and detrimental
comments are slung every which way. Others, rely on subtle jabs while some are oblivious to the
offense of the people they are around. It seems to me, that people do not seem to care. I have
listened to countless conversations where people would nonchalantly insult their own culture and
heritage as if they were being humorous. I have friends who would willingly describe themselves as
whitewashed. Washwashed: Used to cover up or gloss over faults, errors, or wrongdoings, or
absolve a wrongdoer from blame. It is interesting to say in the least. What are they saying that is
wrong? Are we wrong to have been forcefully and unknowingly assimilated into Western culture? I
have spent so much time learning English from a young age that my competence with my mother
tongue is practically nonexistent. We live in a multicultural country, but Canada had only been
known for its hospitality and welcoming atmosphere for a couple of decades. Funny how many ugly,
bloody things can be quickly swept under the rug. The Komagata Maru is an excellent example of
racial discrimination, as well as the many residential schools that wrecked abuse and havoc upon so
many Native families. On a short term mission 's trip this summer, we were invited by a First
Nations reserve on Vancouver Island to help run a

The One And Only Ivan Analysis
"The One and Only Ivan" by Katherine Applegate was a completely different experience for me as
an avid action/adventure reader. The bildungsroman style of this book was completely different
from the straightforward types books I'm used to reading, this was a complete step out of my
comfort zone. The book mainly focused on Ivan's (Main character ( he is a gorilla who has been
living in an arcade in a mall for for twenty seven years)) identity crisis, because he had spent so
much time in captivity he has not really had the chance to be a gorilla and is therefore confused
about who he really is, as he hasn't had chance to be a gorilla or a human. But as the story
progresses Ivan's perspective, and the reader's, is in constant flux. Though Ivan

We have always lived in the Castle
In the story We have always lived in the Castle, by Shirley Jackson, the reader is presented with
only one perspective and that is Mary Katherine "Merricat" Blackwood's point of view. While many
aspect were present, the one that really stood out was that the Blackwood family does not appreciate
change. Everything is preserved: objects, food, routines, rooms, etc. So, it is clear that when facing
situations that cause change, both Mary Katherine and Constance Blackwood, the two sisters who
survived the murder of the family, would react a certain way. Merricat's reaction is seen through
different stages from non–verbal, to verbal, to violent. On the other hand, Constance seemed to
welcome change for the most part ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
That step was mostly seen when Merricat talked about her dislike of cousin Charles. She had, on
multiple occasions, said that "Charles is a ghost" (p.69), that he would soon go away, and that he is
causing uncle Julian to become more sick. The last straw was when Mary Katherine had asked
Charles directly "Please will you go way?" (p.80) and his reply was no. The third step appeared
when Charles kept threatening Merricat that he would win Constance over. She was worried about
losing her sister's affection, so, this young girl decided to scare Charles away. She started listing off
poisonous foods and their effect on the human body. On top of that, she trashed his bedroom to the
point where it became unrecognizable. Her last act of violence towards Charles was when she
started a fire in his bedroom which had successfully gotten her rid of him. She had said: "There
would be nothing of Charles in there now, even his pipe must have been consumed [by the fire]"
(p.102). In this scene, Merricat had repeatedly said that the fire that she had started was Charles' fire.
This sentence alone represented her disconnection to the fire that she had started, nothing was her
fault, she merely took a measure to get rid of a nuisance. This concept was mostly visible when
Merricat said " I wondered if I could go up the stairs and shut the door to our father's room and keep

Finally, one last bite finished it of the meat. Suddenly he couldn't think of what to do. He felt a

The Night
Sometime after sunset, I managed to fall asleep on the sofa while Hawking and Gran continued
talking. The ghosts, having figured out we just didn't care anymore, quieted down to the occasional
moan and howl. I guessed even ghosts get tired of all the drama after a while. I woke up at ten and
saw Gran sleeping in her chair by the fire. Hawking stood by us, keeping watch. After deciding there
was no way I was going to be able to fall back asleep, I closed my eyes and was out in seconds.
The next time I awoke, the room was brighter, and my stomach was growling. The clock read half
past one. Gran's chair was empty, and I could hear the clanking of dishes in the kitchen. The
delicious aroma of frying bacon wafted through the air.
Yawning, I took a detour to the restroom. After a shower and a change of clothes, I felt human again.
In the kitchen I helped Gran by flipping pancakes. Hawking watched while we cooked, and every
time I turned my back the pancake stack got shorter and shorter. That is until I wove a protection
spell around the plate. He was put out that of all the times I tried, this was the time my spell actually
worked.
The ghosts must have heard our activity, because soon they started up with their thumping, banging,
screaming and all the other annoying sounds that go along with a castle full of vengeful spirits
wanting a little payback on the murderer's descendants. It gave our meal that extra little touch that
one expects with fine dining in a haunted castle.

"Lexi" I whisper as I realize that the person yelling at me is my little sister, Lexi. I sit up and look

running down her face. She was covered in scratches and dirt. I stand up pain shooting up my leg, I
need to help her. I run to her ignoring the pain in my leg.
"Lexi, are you okay?" I ask. She doesn't answer me, she just stares. I must look just as bad as her, I
think.
"What happened?" she asks me confused.
"The...the plane... it crashed Lexi!"
"Wha... what?"
"Look around Lexi, look where we are! The back of the plane came off... and... now look we're in
the forest!" I start to freak out as everything sets in.
"Annabeth" she whispers but I don't pay attention "Annabeth!" she yells this time.
"What!"
"Look around, I think that we're the only ones that are alive." I look around at the plane and the
forest. The back of the plane was missing and one of the wings is broken in half, there are giant

Wedding Speech Delivered by the Bride Essay
Wedding Speech Delivered by the Bride
Hello everyone. I guess this is slightly unusual – the Bride doing a speech – but as you all know, the
chances of me being able to stay quiet whilst everyone else does a speech were pretty slim.
A good speech, they say, should be like a mini–skirt – short enough to be interesting, yet long
enough to cover the essentials! So here goes........
Thank you all for coming to share the day with us. Many of you have had to take time off work
and/or travelled a fair distance to be with us today – we really do appreciate the sacrifices that have
been made for us.
Of course, there are some faces missing from this celebration as I look round the room and for
whatever reason, cannot be with us to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Thank you to my Chief Bridesmaid Rachel for putting up with my wittering, nagging and moaning
on this, that and the other. Thankyou for smiling sweetly when what you really wanted to do was
slap me! I'd also like to thank you especially for all the hard work you put into designing and
making the invitations. Thankyou to my beautiful Bridesmaids Lucy, Suzanne and Hannah for
carrying out your duties perfectly. Thankyou to Paul for agreeing to take on the role of Best Man
and getting James to the church – you've done me proud on that part alone – although depending on
the contents of your speech, I may retract the 'proud' bit! Thankyou to our Ushers Alan and Craig.
You've both scrubbed up nicely and thanks for your help.
A lot of people seem to think there's a difference to your relationship once you are married.
Someone told me:
Before marriage, a man will lie awake all night thinking about something you've said; after
marriage, he'll fall asleep before you've finished saying it. Nothing new there then (pat hubby's
head)
They say that when a man holds a woman's hand before marriage, it's love. After marriage, it's self
defence (hubby pretended to cower at this point)
I know that our opinion of marriage today is a lot more positive. I hope that in twenty years time,
we'll still have the same opinion. I'll keep you posted.
Last but not least, a few words on James. I'd like to thank James for his earlier compliments and I

30 For 30 Broke Analysis
"30 for 30 Broke" is a documentary ESPN film, which was premiered on October 2, 2012. The
founder of this film is Bill Simmons. The film has 30 presentations, presented by Buick Verano. The
major athletes who were involved in the film are Bernie Kosar, Andre Rison, Keith McCants, and
Cliff Floyd, Sean Salisbury, Jamal Mashburn, Homer Bush, Bart Scott and Leon Searcy. The aim of
Broke is to explore the factors that lead to professional athletes to have such a dismal record when it
comes to post–career financial security. The film shows how easy for multimillionaires to get broke,
especially for professional athletes. According to this film "By the time they have been retired for
two years, 78 percent of former NFL players have gone bankrupt or are under financial stress; ...

That is not an age in which you typically find excellent long–range planning skills and know how
use a lot of money. Young professional athletes spend money for cars, houses, jewelry, tailored suits.
They compete with each other who has better material possessions. They don't just spend money
buying diamonds, houses and cars. They pay high tax rates, and then they pay agents and lawyers.
Some of professional athletes gamble. Another reason for getting broke is bad investment in
businesses. For example, restaurants, record labels and car washes. But if you really want to lose a
lot of money, the fast way might be to take the route of someone like Evander Holyfield, who is said
in the film that he has eleven children by nine women. Child support recurs over and over again in
Broke, which gives an airing both to the athletes' complaints that women seek them out specifically
to get pregnant and get rich and to the response that you can't very well throw your athlete status
around to impress women in clubs and then claim they trapped you because of your athlete

Comparing Huck's The One And Only Ivan
The One and Only Ivan is a beautifully written and illustrated story about a family of animals
growing, experiencing and living together in the Big Top Mall and Video Arcade. Based on Huck's
Children's Literature, this book combines fantasy and realistic fiction to make this a story that
engages readers through every page of the journey. The book is based on a silverback gorilla, Ivan,
who lived in a small, confined space in a shopping mall. Ivan was terribly lonely and cramped in
captivity, but he did have a man who tried to entertain him with activities such as painting. In this
sense, the book is realistic because it is based on a true story and has elements and events that could
actually happen. However, a gorilla probably would not plan his own escape through a series of
paintings, so the book contains parts that are fantasy. Throughout the story, Ivan learns the
importance of fighting for what he believes in, finding your true identity and building long–lasting
friendships. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He often finds himself comparing himself to humans. He examines physical characteristics, such as
eyes. He thinks "Human babies are an ugly lot. But their eyes are like our babies' eyes." (140). At
face value, it seems like Ivan is simply comparing eyes, but as soon as you read further into the text,
it is evident that Ivan means something much greater. He says their eyes are, "Too big for their
faces, and for the world" (140). This shows how Ivan feels about what he has seen in his lifetime, as
well as what he thinks other babies should and should not

The Luck Of Ginger Coffey Essay
In Brian Moore's The Luck of Ginger Coffey, the city of Montreal is depicted as being in a kind of
stasis, its landscape and inhabitants repeatedly described as frozen and stagnant: "Four forty–five.
Office workers, waiting release as the minute hand moved slowly towards the hour, looked at the
darkness beyond their windows and saw edges of frosting begin to mist the panes" (Moore 117).
Despite this passage's emphasis on stillness, however, it nevertheless features two references to
time. Throughout Moore's novel, attention is repeatedly paid to specific times or time frames,
complicating the underlying image of Montreal as a city averse to progress. Considering the
subjectiveness of the third–person limited narration, it seems best to examine ... Show more content

The profession of the contemporary newspaper typist saw a change in corporate culture wherein the
clock became a powerful object, owned only by the foreman and governing the employees. It seems,
however, that Moore's depiction of time is more appropriately a reflection of Ginger's fixation on the
myth of the new world as a land of boundless opportunity. Indeed, the clock does seem to be
independent of the diurnal cycle: "As [Coffey] started off, the sun moved west, unadmitted by the
pall clouds which all day had curtained the frozen river and the city islanded within it . . . Four
forty–five" (117). This image of the sun being blocked from the city by clouds demonstrates the
city's apparent ignorance for the sun's position in the sky, yet the passage continues on, repeatedly
referring to the passing minutes as Coffey makes his way to the Tribune. One thing that time does
not seem so independent from, however, is the lives of the office workers in the financial district,
"waiting release as the minute hand moved slowly towards the hour" (117). At "five o'clock . . .
down came the office workers, spilling out into the streets" (117); at "five–thirty . . . [another]
policeman . . . invited Coffey to cross [the street]" (117). In this passage, the connection between
time and nature has been completely severed and time has become reappropriated as

Personal Narrative Essay: Maniacal Serial Killer
It was a beautiful summers day in the diminutive town of Wadesboro. Perfect for best friends
Ashely, Mycah, Brittany, Eric, Jacobi, Frank and I to have some fun. It was merely 2 o'clock p.m.,
when we decided to go to an open field in the woods to camp out. We all packed our gear and food
and anything else to assist us in the camp. We left from my house and started the 30 minute drive to
the field. When we arrived there, set both tents up, the boys in one and the girls in another. After
everything was complete, we sat on the grass and chatted for a bit. Thinking of activities we can do
to have fun, Jacobi shouted aloud, "Lets play hide and seek!". Everyone agreed to play the game and
went to find their hiding spots. While Jacobi counted down from 30, I saw what looked to be a

The One and Only Wife of Bath Essay
The One and Only Wife of Bath In The Canterbury tales, Chaucer uses The Wife of Bath as a
representation of what it was like for Women in the Middle Ages to be striped of equality and bow
to the otherwise male dominated society. For the representation of women Chaucer uses the Tales of
"The Scholar", "The Second Nun "The Reeve's", and "The Franklin" and many others in a very dry,
pretentious manner to steer readers into the view of how a women of the Middle Ages should be as a
so called "virtuous" wife or woman. The concept of marriage plays a major part in manifesting the
idea of the issues of inferiority of women. The perception rendered as women having to be obedient

Her self–proclaimed wisdom and experience makes her justly and to a certain extent credible
enough to stand in the position that she does that is as heroine of her time. The Wife of Bath's
Prologue is lengthy but everything said is important and captures a prime image of who the Wife of
Bath truly is but also the society women are dealing with. Also her prologue retaliates against the
problems of inferiority of women at hand. She does her best to defend herself for her life
occurrences as well as preserving the merit of women. She explains "a sensible woman only busies
herself to win love were there's none"(177), although one may say that this is a negative way for a
woman to gain power .The positive note is that the wife of Bath cares to give the only advise she
knows that has worked for her. The fact that the Wife of Bath cares about sharing advice in a sense
that will cost women a chance to gain power ,cancels out the seven deadly sin of greed in her
character. To expand on what was said about women and negative connotations that are placed upon
them as the Wife of Bath points out was a matter that was seen even in writings of the time as her
fifth husband read to her very often the wrong doings of "wicked wives" and how all women are a
disturbance and only seek money and all the finer things from their men. The absolute goal was to
make women look like nuisances. At this point there was much literal works to in her Prologue to

The Tragic Cliff
Everyone needs a place to escape the everyday complications of life. Life has its ups and downs and
we all learn to deal with them in different ways. Some people use exercise to release stress while
others find places to hide from the stress for short periods of time.
I found a place of relaxation hundreds of feet above everyone looking down. Right outside of town
there is a cliff that overlooks the downtown area. There I feel as though I am above everyone and
nothing could touch me. I feel comfort just knowing I can observe thousands of people below me,
like looking at little ants through a microscope, yet no one can see me. Trees and bushes hover over
me like a blanket giving me shelter. It's ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
I believe we both developed a better understanding not only of each other, but of others as well. We
could have spent hours just talking, laughing, and really feeling alive. What we really found
hilarious and surprising was that Dubuque actually looked absolutely immaculate from such a
height. We would never have guessed the difference in appearance just by looking downward on the
city.
One of the first times my friend and I explored the cliff she found a ragged looking envelope with a
dated letter of desperation in it. It was addressed to Whom it May Concern, and its contents were
packed with problems, dreams, answers, and lies in a sing song pattern. We had to read it a couple of
times to fully consume the poetry and figure out the words that were erased from the still damp
paper. About three pages the poet went on about life in general. It really touched the both of us and
after that, we began to bring our poetry to the cliff and read aloud some of our thoughts. We never
did find out who the author of the poetic letter was, however, it gave us both the feeling of new
hope. I found it very refreshing to know that some people face life's obstacles in such a creative way.
The way I see it and I think the way the author of the poem sees it, is that when in nature, and
especially looking down upon the world, there is a distance you begin to take on from that world,
the world of the not so beautiful reality. I believe people

Bermuda Triangle: Is It The Only One?
Is It the Only One? A great worldwide mystery surfaced the world dating all the way back to 1492,
when "Christopher Columbus reported strange lights and compass readings" (Bhattacharya). The
Bermuda Triangle, a place where disappearing comes from a literal sense, is located in the Atlantic
Ocean. Over the past thousands of years several boats and airplanes have gone missing and were
never to be seen again. There are many possible explanations for the disappearances. Yes, "there
may be pure fables or primitive superstitions or they may be as ...over exaggerations of unexplained
aerial phenomena, was capitalized on by ancient writers and priests" (Quasar 250). There are several
theories that people have come up with: "unusual magnetic fields, paranormal phenomena, and the
underwater city of Atlantis, and even alien abduction" ("Bermuda Triangle"). After looking at it,
there seems to be some natural causes to the disappearances. Methane gas, the Atlantic Undersea
Test and Evaluation Center (AUTEC), and hexagonal clouds all could be a culprit when it comes to
all the strange disappearances. It has been stated, "When Dead Sea animals and plants decompose
they create methane gas." (Whiting 20). "Oceanographers have recently found that the Bermuda
Triangle contains the richest deposits of methane gas on the planet" (Steward 81–84). ... Show more

Canadian sales were excellent; compared to the United States where we've had a drop in sales.
Fierce competition and the milk price have been the two factors linked to this decline. In Quebec

The One And Only Ivan Essay
The One and Only Ivan by Katherine Applegate is about Ivan, a silverback gorilla who is raised by a
human and lives in captivity at the Exit 8 Big Top Mall and Video Arcade. Ivan is brought to the
Exit 8 after being captured and separated from his family while living in the wild. Ivan considers his

Ivan's determination to protect Ruby. Applegate does this by declaring that a silverback is

Im Not The Only One Analysis
The song I chose "I'm Not The Only One" by Sam Smith relates perfectly towards Ed from "Man
Descending". A common theme, which relates to both Ed and "Im Not The Only One", is cheating
on a significant other. The slow beat and emotional message of "Im Not The Only One" gives the
listener an emotional setting similar to Ed's situation. The lyric "When you call me baby I know I'm
not the only one", and "for months on end I have had my doubt", implies that Sam's significant other
is in another relationship calling two people baby, while Sam has been suspicious about it for
months. Similar to Ed, who has his doubts about his wife Victoria's faithfulness towards him, the
lines "My powers of invention are stretched to believe that Victoria might be unfaithful towards my

Only One View in a Story
"Show people as one thing and one thing only over and over again and that is what they become."
(Chimamanda Ngozi) That is the danger of a singles story, it makes equal humanity difficult to
recognize and it emphasizes people's differences instead of their similarities. A single story is an
incomplete recollection of information. "Power is the ability not just to tell the story of another
person, but to make it the definitive story of that person."(Ngozi) In relation to US history, a single
story is all many people have heard, like Ngozi states "Start the story with the arrows of the Native
Americans, and not with the arrival of the British, and you have an entirely different story. Start the
story with the failure of the African state, and not with the colonial creation of the African state, and
you have an entirely different story." Many history textbooks only tell a single story, often times
they are cleaned up before being presented to American youth. Information that is suppressed has
left the youth ignorant of much of U.S. history. People like Howard Zinn and James W. Loewen are
attempting to change this. They are trying to tell more than one side of the story, they are not
suppressing information so that history can be taught accurately. In Loewen's book, Lies My
Teacher Told Me, he states "Textbooks should include some people based not only on what they
achieved but also on the distance they traversed to achieve it." This quote can relate to many U.S.

Family Narrative Essay
When I was first looking for a topic, it was harder than I thought. As I picked up my pen and paper
everything evanesced. When the topic searching wasn't going well I tried to define the word family.
Ooh did I think long and hard, but realized that everybody's definition was personal and different
based on their feelings and memories. I thought long and hard into my family history and adorned
the memory of our vacation to South Dakota, along with the activities attached to the trip. In my
family narrative, I will be explaining a family trip to Mt. Rushmore, Kalahari, and the wild
experience of standing on a glass box staring down in the Willis Tower, trying to unlock my
personal definition of the word family. Now, let's jump to the exhilarating trip to South Dakota!
Have you ever wondered what it was like to stand in front of Abraham Lincoln or George
Washington? They were on a high mountain called Mt. Rushmore. While there we visited the
Sculptor's Studio and the Lincoln Borglum Museum. I think I can say that the whole family liked the
Sculptors Studio the best of all. In the studio, you were given a face to face look at some of the tools
used to carve the important faces in the mountain. After we left there, everything went downhill. All
of the little kids were whining while the older ones were bored out of their mind. The only ones that
seemed to be enjoying themselves were my parents. "Ooh look at this. Oh yeah, this is a cool
monument." Now the real action occurred

going to attend math and English and then just figure out how to waste my time, but that's another
story for a different day. As the first day of school rolled around everything was going great parked
my truck said hello to all my friends, went to my first period class and then came second period, it
was time for art. I went in realized I had two great friends in that class, Bryan (senior) and Ivan ...

Wheeler didn't really hold a grudge against me for the way I acted the first day of school, When she
assigned our first class project I was terrified because I knew I didn't have the artistic capabilities to
do a good job. Our first assignment was to create a clay bowl, once we completed that she would
fire it in her kiln, which then we would paint our bowls and, she would fire them once again so they
can dry properly. I probably created the most out of shape, dented up bowl anyone has ever seen,
and I painted it blue, which by the way I painted all my projects blue. Still worried that I wouldn't
pass the class Bryan and Ivan helped me out as much as they could. But we also fooled around
ALOT in that class, one of our main things was playing cards, which no doubt Mrs. Wheeler hated,
and if I remember correctly I think she kicked us out one day for

The One and The Only Jimmy Valvano Essay
The One and The Only Jimmy Valvano
"Never give up! Failure and rejection are only the first step to succeeding". These were the words
that the late Jimmy Valvano gave to his audience at the ESPY Awards on March 3rd 1993. The
ESPY Awards are sponsored by ESPN each year for those recognized for their achievement in
sports. Almost 21 years ago, "Jimmy V" as he was known gave his speech because he was not told
to; rather, he gave his speech because he was qualified to influence a revolution. Jimmy Valvano
was a prestigious collegiate basketball coach at North Carolina State University. It was at North
Carolina State, where he led his Cinderella team to a national championship in 1983. Just nine years
later in 1992 he was diagnosed with a rare ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
James wanted to accomplish all of his dreams with blood, sweat, and tears of hard work, and loyalty
to the game he loved. Those blood, sweat and tears began to develop before the speech even started,
and transpired till the very end, setting up how Valvano would approach what he would actually say.
The first clip of the speech would be Jimmy V walking up the stage weary about the possibility of
falling in front of the soon to be audience. For anybody who knows somebody who has, or who had
cancer, walking up those few steps to get onto the stage were basically equivalent to climbing
Mount Everest. Vigilant of potentially falling and showing how weak he actually was only
developed Valvano's emotional tone of the speech that never gave way. Since Jimmy V did not have
a preplanned speech he spoke from his heart analyzing how close one can come from failure, to how
much more you need to achieve for success. As words started sputtering out, Valvano used his
emotional tone to organize what he actually wanted to inspire throughout the rest of the speech.
Valvano had planned to be emotional, humorous, sympathetic, and straight forward throughout the
whole speech to build up to this moment where he expects everyone watching to be more aware of
cancer research because it is just as important as AIDS research. From this point on all eyes were on
Jimmy V, the audience was calm, cool, and collective, and on

Comparing The One And Only Ivan

  • 1. Comparing The One And Only Ivan My overall thoughts about The One and Only Ivan is I really enjoyed the story. First, the story was a roller coaster of emotion from highs to lows, especially learning how Ivan was taken from his mother, his twenty–seven years in captivity to Ivan living with a family of silverbacks. Second, I enjoyed how the author is showing young readers that even though we might come from different backgrounds, cultures and species we should help one another. For example, the way Ivan keeps his promise to Stella by helping Ruby get to a better life in a zoo. I also enjoy how the characters display sacrifice and commitment, example George helping Ivan when George knows Mack will fire him and he will not be able to take care of his sick wife and daughter and Ivan's commitment to his paintings after seeing Mack with the claw–stick threating to abuse to Ruby the way other animals have been abused. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The conversations between Ivan and Bob are some of my favorite parts in the story. Bobs disdain for humans, the fact he wants to be homeless ever since he was abandoned by a previous owner and Ivan need of acceptance and help from the humans. In the end Bob, Ivan and Ruby all find homes. I truly cared for these characters especially Ivan after watching the documentary "the Urban Gorilla" I was mad, distraught and happy that the author gave captive animal a voice that needs to heard or we will lose them all. After reading this story, I really connected it to blackfish the documentary of captive killer whales that need to be ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 3. Life Changing Moment In Life When reminiscing on my past I'm able to recall the certain moments, which have led to a path where I find myself at a cross road. Searching through the databases of my mind, I'm reminded of cherished memories, though I attempt to pinpoint the times in which I have been successful in my decision making; I cannot help but deliberate whether my past conveyed such a challenging decision. My future is unpredictable, and my choices will decide my prolonged existence; positive or negative I must act on them now, or else I will miss the train to my forthcoming. Through the life changing moments, which led to my admiration for the ones close to me; I have found what identifies me as an individual. Nonetheless, will it be enough for the rapid pace at which my future emerges? Life changing, it's a term to identify an event that will forever transform someone, and the life they are currently living; sounds self–explanatory, though it isn't such a simple phrase. Considering the expression; life changing is watching a friend fight cancer, battling each day not knowing if she will get better. Moreover, Parents who are combating a recession, struggling to generate money with the profession they find themselves in; moving from house to house trying to stay joyful to a child who may not identify the extent of the situation. Trails such as these have caused my life to be significantly altered. However, these events are only a minor fraction of my narrative. For instance, I've helped lead a movement against bullying, being triumphant with the results. Furthermore, I had the opportunity to represent my school at a World Leadership Conference, being able to express heartache, happiness, and love to individuals, some who have experienced horrible tragedies, was such an eye–opening experience. These events in my life have erupt a fire in my soul, and striving to build upon each situation will only be beneficial for my future endeavors. Reflecting these life changing moments, I come to a realization that not all memories are so influential, but more of a comforting feeling. My family vacations to Walt Disney World helped bring imagination and inspiration inside of a young boy's mind. Playing on my childhood play–set in our ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. Descriptive Essay About Lost Or Abandoned Lost or Abandoned? Have you ever gotten lost? I have. Or maybe I was abandoned? I don't know. I was at Space Academy, at The Space and Rocket Center in Alabama, attending an activity with other campers. In my group, there were three girls. I saw them all day and night because I was in the same dorm as them. We got along pretty well, until I got lost. Or maybe my group abandoned me... But let me step back a bit... It was an ordinary day at Space Camp: wake up at 7, go brush my teeth, get dressed, and li ne up. I went to the rides I usually go on with my group. We had fun, but then it got really hot so we had to go inside. We went to a movie then we went to lunch. I had an ordinarily fantastic lunch (like everyday), and my friends each had a couple cans of Nos. Nos is a drink that has 260 grams of caffeine, which is a lot. (I mean like 20 cups of coffee a lot) I didn't have any, and they all became inordinately giddy. They were all laughing and jumping and their eyes became extremely dilated. I laughed harder than my brain could handle. Then we went to an indoor ride I put my stuff down and got on, it was a lot of fun! Then it happened. The counselor told us to get our stuff and I looked down to grab my stuff. I had lost something so I looked around. And when I couldn't find it, I finally looked up. Everyone was gone... I was terrified... I kept calm and went to find someone who could help me. I found someone who worked there and I said, "I got separated from my group. My group ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 7. My Memorable Journey A Memorable Journey With A Friend On the date of October 27th 2017, me and my friend Tovah were on our way to a cabin in Branson for her birthday. While we were there we went shopping at Tanger Outlets and we went to The Haunted Lost Cavern at Top Of The Rock. Now in the essay below you will read about my memorable journey with my friend Tovah. It was seven o'clock so when we got there so we just watched TV then went to bed. The next day, we went shopping at Tanger Outlets and while we were there we got some awesome fudge. We went to Bath and Body and I bought six bottles of hand sanitizer and gave one to Tovah. I also bought a hand sanitizer holder and it came with two so I gave one to Tovah and I kept one for myself. When we were done shopping we ate lunch then went back to the cabin. We started a fire in the fireplace but the vent was closed so the cabin filled up with smoke that made Tovah sleepy so she took a nap. When it was about nine o'clock, we woke her up and we went to Top Of The Rock. We were there to go to the Haunted Lost Cavern. We only had to wait a little bit until we could get on the bus to go to the cavern. On the way down a few people scare you. When you get to around the area of the cavern, people are there so they can take your picture. When you first get in there's a crazy lady chases you around with a fake leg. After you get past her it was just a bunch of mechanical things. When you get to another part of the cavern there are sheets hanging from ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 9. There is Only One Cleopatra Almost every pharaoh–queen was named Cleopatra, yet only one is ever thought of, Cleopatra Thea Philopator VII, "The Goddess and Beloved of her Father". Every moment of her life from 69 BCE until August 12, 30 BCE was a story larger than life, epic in scale, and over the top in its grandeur. As the last reigning pharaoh of the Ptolemaic Dynasty in Ancient Egypt, she is remembered for her ability to rule as a political genius and a strong female leader living in a male–dominated world despite all odds being against her. Firstly, Cleopatra grew up in the Ptolemaic palace living a life of luxury, yet her subjects worshipped and even felt connected to her as more than just their queen. Secondly, after Cleopatra was exiled by her incompetent brother, Ptolemy XII, she came back with an army of mercenaries and took back Egypt to be its sole and more qualified ruler. Lastly, Cleopatra went to any means to secure her power and to ensure her nation's financial and political strength; therefore what started off as a strategic alliance with Rome slowly became her dominance over most of the ancient world. Pharaohs for centuries had put themselves on a pedestal, those in the Ptolemaic Dynasty rarely ever connected with their subjects, but Cleopatra defied this ideology. The Ptolemies were descendants of a general in Alexander the Great's military and therefore were aligned with Greek and Macedonian traditions. Previously, Greek rulers and Egyptian subjects caused great division among the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 11. There is Only One Ludwig van Beethoven "What you are, you are by accident of birth; what I am, I am by myself. There are and will be a thousand princes; there is only one Beethoven" Summing up the philosophy of the great composer, Ludwig van Beethoven, the quote also reflects of the time in which he lived. Beethoven firmly believed in the dignity of man and that one should live in complete freedom without limits. Looking into the three parts of his life, early, middle, and end, one will learn about the inner life of the great composer. During his early life, his musical capabilities shined through. Born in Bonn, Germany in 1770, his family life started out rough. His father, a court musician, struggled as a drunkard, leaving his young son to fend for himself. Although caring, Beethoven's mother lived frail and sickly for the whole of her life. Although he began studying music at age 4, his lessons did not bring him joy. Often late at night, his dad would come home from patronizing local taverns and force the boy to learn music until dawn. Drinking excessively just seemed a natural part of his life. As a young child, he often battled depression, which one can understand why by simply looking at his home life. However, some noticed his skills and employed him as an organist. In 1787, at age 17, he traveled to Vienna and played for the great composer, Mozart who accurately predicted the future greatness of the young man. While in Italy, Beethoven received a call to return home to see his mother. Soon after ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 13. How To The Marshall M. Fredericks Sculpture Museum I went to the Marshall M. Fredericks Sculpture Museum for my art experience project. I was impressed with the amount of statues I was able to see in one place. A majority of them seem to have been created and donated by the Fredericks family themselves. As I said before the amount of statues in this little space is impressive, however my first impression is the feeling of claustrophobia. The statues are packed in fairly tight and the space overall doesn't seem to be well utilized. The room it was in did however provide an ample amount of natural light from the large windowed wall to the north. This coupled with the recessed lighting did a good job of lighting the statues facing the northern wall. Unfortunately though, some of the statues are facing the southern wall and lose a little detail to not being as well lit from only the recessed lighting. The contrast between well–lit and dimly–lit does lend to contrast in light and shadow for the statues facing the east and west walls. The contours of these statues are much more defined because of the line of contrast so they seem to draw me in the most. I also get this cold feeling, even though the floors are more of a warm/neutral color. I believe this is due to the lack of a large amount of the statues not being colored at all. The few that are colored are just antiqued bronze so they are mostly that powder blue/green color. The lack of color though, I feel, is intended to make a point. It seems as though the artist meant for ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 15. Theme Of The One And Only Ivan Newbery Award winning books, and Newbery Honor books, are children's literature that have exceeded in one or more area. These areas include: Theme or concept, accuracy, clarity and organization of information, development of plot and characters, the delineation of setting, and the appropriateness of the style of the literature. The One and Only Ivan exceeds these categories in more than one area. This fiction story is written for students in grades 3–5 and 6–8 at a guided reading level S (Scholastic, 2018). Katherine Applegate writes this story with a clear concept throughout. This children's literature clearly conveys the idea of what it means to treat others kindly, and how to be humane to not only humans, but to all living creatures. Not only is her concept defined throughout the story, the portrayal of the setting of the story is also appropriate and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... We are introduced to the main characters of the story here, Ivan the Silverback gorilla, who is also the narrator of the story, introduces us as the reader to his home inside the mall. The setting is described from Ivan's point of view, and here we realize just how lonely his life is. According to Ivan in the story he describes his setting as "I am lucky my domain has three windowed walls. I can see the whole mall and a bit of the world beyond: the frantic pinball machines, the pink billows of cotton candy, the vast and treeless parking lot" (Applegate 2012, p. 14). This gives us an indication as the reader how miserable yet accurate the life of a circus gorilla is. A gorilla should have the freedom of the wild which we see that Ivan and his fellow characters do not have further exceeding in the accuracy of the setting of the story. Applegate is able to give a clear delineation of the setting which ties into the overall concept of her story which was that of humanity and what it means to be compassionate for other living ... Jonas, after the Ceremony, now realizes that he will be different then the rest of his friends, "Now, for the first time in his twelve years of life, Jonas felt separate, different."(62) Jonas now is different then other kids. He realizes that his assignment has different requirements than the other children. He also learns he has the power of "seeing beyond". Jonas saw Jonas and his friends playing a game of war , and then realized, "In his mind, Jonas saw again the face of the boy who had lain dying on the field and had begged him for water."(126) Jonas, with the memory of war, understands that the game war is the same as the memory of the boy who was lying on the ground dying. He realizes that things that seemed harmless, now seem so scary and sad. Also, when Jonas and the Giver first meet each other and start talking about different things and the Giver says this,"Jonas, you and I are the only ones who have feelings."(144–145) It's easy to think that being different or thinking differently is ok, but when you look at the facts, Jonas and the Giver have no one to share how they feel with, or what they are experiencing in the training. Analysis Of Hatchet By Gary Paulsen The book Hatchet by Gary Paulsen is about a young man that was forced to leave his old life behind him when his plane goes down somewhere in the Canadian wilderness.Brian is on his way to visit his dad in Canada due to a divorce in the family. While he is sitting in the plane the pilot of the plane suffers from a heart attack and the plane goes down into a lake.Brian is forced to overcome task after task after task in order for him to survive. From making fire to building a bug proof shelter each of them come down to one thing, the will to survive. The setting of the story takes place on a L shaped lake in the middle of the Canadian wilderness. There was no given time range for when the story takes place but estimated by the context it is sometime in the late 1900's.The theme of the story is survival because the whole entire book is based on Brian doing everything that is possible in order for him to survive. Such as making a bowstring out of his shoelace or making a raft from a bunch of torn down logs in order to gain possession of a survival kit.The mood of the story is suspenseful because you didn't know whether Brian would die in this chapter or continue to live.Another mood for the story is happy because Brian was very lucky when he had a hatchet on him which was 75 percent of why Brian survive,Brian also had a good environment for hunting tiny game, and fishing which was a very big plus on his part. • 21. The Reflection Of My Spilio : My Portfolio My portfolio is more about my everyday life, my opinions, and a little bit of history, it is also something I wrote to have fun before leaving this class. It may not make a lot of sense at first but once I finish I hope you guys understand my purpose. The reason why I choose a roller coaster for my cover page is because senior year can have its ups and downs and it's going to end sooner than you think, so you can either have your hands up and have fun or you can be scared. There is no point in closing your eyes and being scared when we will all end up at the same place. I know that I don't say much in this class. Mainly because I have nothing to say, but today I do. I decided to write this speech on how I've grown up and how I changed as a person after taking this class. Being in this class has helped me grow as a writer so now I can explain what I feel. When you understand that everyone is their own person and you try to think of them for who they are, you'll start to grow up as the person you want to be. I've learned many things in this class but one thing that sticks out is that you can't really start a paper knowing the ending of it. So I'm going to start off with one of the assignments, A day in the life. Then after I will write about whatever comes to my mind. Also what I'm about to read is in third person so whenever I say "he" I am referring to myself. He wakes up to his dad yelling at him to get up. My theme ended up taking me the whole rest of the semester to finish. Mr. Syme glanced at me, "You finished your theme?" He looked down at the pages. "Woo– wee! That's a lot of words you got there, Ponyboy. I would say I'd have it graded by next week, but it might take me a while to read this. I'll try to get it back to you in a couple weeks. If it's good, it could bring your semester grade up to a B." "Thanks, sir!" I rushed home to tell Darry the good news. He'd never believe it. I pushed open the door. The room was pretty dark. I turned to Soda, scared. "Where is Darry? Have you seen him?" "Not since this morning. Why?" "It wasn't a piece of glass that you saw; you saw this." I held the blade out to Soda. "Maybe Darry dropped it or something. I bet he's fine," Soda reasoned. It seemed like he was trying to convince itself everything was fine. I turned the blade so that the stain was showing. Racial Discrimination And Its Effects On American Culture If there is one thing I have noticed during my, admittedly, short sixteen years, it is the racial discrimination and obvious bigotry of the those who are not "white". Stereotypes and detrimental comments are slung every which way. Others, rely on subtle jabs while some are oblivious to the offense of the people they are around. It seems to me, that people do not seem to care. I have listened to countless conversations where people would nonchalantly insult their own culture and heritage as if they were being humorous. I have friends who would willingly describe themselves as whitewashed. Washwashed: Used to cover up or gloss over faults, errors, or wrongdoings, or absolve a wrongdoer from blame. It is interesting to say in the least. What are they saying that is wrong? Are we wrong to have been forcefully and unknowingly assimilated into Western culture? I have spent so much time learning English from a young age that my competence with my mother tongue is practically nonexistent. We live in a multicultural country, but Canada had only been known for its hospitality and welcoming atmosphere for a couple of decades. Funny how many ugly, bloody things can be quickly swept under the rug. The bildungsroman style of this book was completely different from the straightforward types books I'm used to reading, this was a complete step out of my comfort zone. The book mainly focused on Ivan's (Main character ( he is a gorilla who has been living in an arcade in a mall for for twenty seven years)) identity crisis, because he had spent so much time in captivity he has not really had the chance to be a gorilla and is therefore confused about who he really is, as he hasn't had chance to be a gorilla or a human. We have always lived in the Castle In the story We have always lived in the Castle, by Shirley Jackson, the reader is presented with only one perspective and that is Mary Katherine "Merricat" Blackwood's point of view. While many aspect were present, the one that really stood out was that the Blackwood family does not appreciate change. Everything is preserved: objects, food, routines, rooms, etc. So, it is clear that when facing situations that cause change, both Mary Katherine and Constance Blackwood, the two sisters who survived the murder of the family, would react a certain way. Merricat's reaction is seen through different stages from non–verbal, to verbal, to violent. On the other hand, Constance seemed to welcome change for the most part ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... That step was mostly seen when Merricat talked about her dislike of cousin Charles. She had, on multiple occasions, said that "Charles is a ghost" (p.69), that he would soon go away, and that he is causing uncle Julian to become more sick. The last straw was when Mary Katherine had asked Charles directly "Please will you go way?" (p.80) and his reply was no. The third step appeared when Charles kept threatening Merricat that he would win Constance over. She was worried about losing her sister's affection, so, this young girl decided to scare Charles away. She started listing off poisonous foods and their effect on the human body. On top of that, she trashed his bedroom to the point where it became unrecognizable. Her last act of violence towards Charles was when she started a fire in his bedroom which had successfully gotten her rid of him. She had said: "There would be nothing of Charles in there now, even his pipe must have been consumed [by the fire]" (p.102). In this scene, Merricat had repeatedly said that the fire that she had started was Charles' fire. This sentence alone represented her disconnection to the fire that she had started, nothing was her fault, she merely took a measure to get rid of a nuisance. This concept was mostly visible when Merricat said " I wondered if I could go up the stairs and shut the door to our father's room and keep the fire inside, belonging entirely to ... The ghosts, having figured out we just didn't care anymore, quieted down to the occasional moan and howl. I guessed even ghosts get tired of all the drama after a while. I woke up at ten and saw Gran sleeping in her chair by the fire. Hawking stood by us, keeping watch. After deciding there was no way I was going to be able to fall back asleep, I closed my eyes and was out in seconds. The next time I awoke, the room was brighter, and my stomach was growling. The clock read half past one. Gran's chair was empty, and I could hear the clanking of dishes in the kitchen. The delicious aroma of frying bacon wafted through the air. Yawning, I took a detour to the restroom. After a shower and a change of clothes, I felt human again. In the kitchen I helped Gran by flipping pancakes. Comparing Huck's The One And Only Ivan The One and Only Ivan is a beautifully written and illustrated story about a family of animals growing, experiencing and living together in the Big Top Mall and Video Arcade. Based on Huck's Children's Literature, this book combines fantasy and realistic fiction to make this a story that engages readers through every page of the journey. The book is based on a silverback gorilla, Ivan, who lived in a small, confined space in a shopping mall. Ivan was terribly lonely and cramped in captivity, but he did have a man who tried to entertain him with activities such as painting. In this sense, the book is realistic because it is based on a true story and has elements and events that could actually happen. However, a gorilla probably would not plan his own escape through a series of paintings, so the book contains parts that are fantasy. The Luck Of Ginger Coffey Essay In Brian Moore's The Luck of Ginger Coffey, the city of Montreal is depicted as being in a kind of stasis, its landscape and inhabitants repeatedly described as frozen and stagnant: "Four forty–five. Office workers, waiting release as the minute hand moved slowly towards the hour, looked at the darkness beyond their windows and saw edges of frosting begin to mist the panes" (Moore 117). Despite this passage's emphasis on stillness, however, it nevertheless features two references to time. The profession of the contemporary newspaper typist saw a change in corporate culture wherein the clock became a powerful object, owned only by the foreman and governing the employees. It seems, however, that Moore's depiction of time is more appropriately a reflection of Ginger's fixation on the myth of the new world as a land of boundless opportunity. Indeed, the clock does seem to be independent of the diurnal cycle: "As [Coffey] started off, the sun moved west, unadmitted by the pall clouds which all day had curtained the frozen river and the city islanded within it . . . Four forty–five" (117). This image of the sun being blocked from the city by clouds demonstrates the city's apparent ignorance for the sun's position in the sky, yet the passage continues on, repeatedly referring to the passing minutes as Coffey makes his way to the Tribune. One thing that time does not seem so independent from, however, is the lives of the office workers in the financial district, "waiting release as the minute hand moved slowly towards the hour" (117). At "five o'clock . . . down came the office workers, spilling out into the streets" (117); at "five–thirty . . . [another] policeman . . . invited Coffey to cross [the street]" (117). Also her prologue retaliates against the problems of inferiority of women at hand. She does her best to defend herself for her life occurrences as well as preserving the merit of women. All of the workers were huddled inside the cafe sipping on some coffee, they appeared to be taking a break. Her heart began to race as she ran up the stairs, it was rounding on five and they couldn't afford a break...or could they. Cleo froze on the top step, it was unimaginable. Every fleck of wall and every particle of dust was in its original condition. No blood, no knives, not a single atom out of place. • 58. The Final Contestants Of The Eighty Fourth Hunger Games "Greetings to the final contestants of the Seventy–fourth Hunger Games. The earlier revision has been revoked. Closer examination of the rule book has disclosed that only one winner may be allowed," he says. "Good luck, and may the odds be ever in your favour." There's a small burst of static and then nothing more. I stare at Peeta as I process what they have just told us. I'm furious, even more angry with the Capitol then I have already been. I take a second to think about it but it makes me nervous, frustrated and enraged. Peeta and I both know what this means and we need to make a decision fast before the Gamemakers decide it's boring the onlookers make a verdict on how to liven us up once again for a more interesting and amusing attack. As for all, these games are only for the amusement of the Capitol and those in the 12 districts that are into it. To Peeta and I, the realisation and understanding that we are the only ones still in the arena hits us, therefore one of us has to be the victor and by 'us' I mean Peeta or me. Peeta pulls what appear to be black berries out of his pocket. I can't seem to tell whether they're the poisonous ones that I nearly ate earlier in the games or not although they do resemble some relation in the colour, size and feeling when he drops four of these into my cold, shaking wet hands. • 60. The Tragic Cliff Essay example The Tragic Cliff Everyone needs a place to escape the everyday complications of life. Life has its ups and downs and we all learn to deal with them in different ways. Some people use exercise to release stress while others find places to hide from the stress for short periods of time. I found a place of relaxation hundreds of feet above everyone looking down. Right outside of town there is a cliff that overlooks the downtown area. There I feel as though I am above everyone and nothing could touch me. I feel comfort just knowing I can observe thousands of people below me, like looking at little ants through a microscope, yet no one can see me. Trees and bushes hover over me like a blanket giving me shelter. It's ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... I believe we both developed a better understanding not only of each other, but of others as well. We could have spent hours just talking, laughing, and really feeling alive. What we really found hilarious and surprising was that Dubuque actually looked absolutely immaculate from such a height. We would never have guessed the difference in appearance just by looking downward on the city. One of the first times my friend and I explored the cliff she found a ragged looking envelope with a dated letter of desperation in it. It was addressed to Whom it May Concern, and its contents were packed with problems, dreams, answers, and lies in a sing song pattern. We had to read it a couple of times to fully consume the poetry and figure out the words that were erased from the still damp paper. About three pages the poet went on about life in general. It really touched the both of us and after that, we began to bring our poetry to the cliff and read aloud some of our thoughts. We never did find out who the author of the poetic letter was, however, it gave us both the feeling of new hope. I found it very refreshing to know that some people face life's obstacles in such a creative way. The way I see it and I think the way the author of the poem sees it, is that when in nature, and especially looking down upon the world, there is a distance you begin to take on from that world, the world of the not so beautiful reality. I believe people

  • 63. Bermuda Triangle: Is It The Only One? Is It the Only One? A great worldwide mystery surfaced the world dating all the way back to 1492, when "Christopher Columbus reported strange lights and compass readings" (Bhattacharya). The Bermuda Triangle, a place where disappearing comes from a literal sense, is located in the Atlantic Ocean. Over the past thousands of years several boats and airplanes have gone missing and were never to be seen again. There are many possible explanations for the disappearances. Yes, "there may be pure fables or primitive superstitions or they may be as ...over exaggerations of unexplained aerial phenomena, was capitalized on by ancient writers and priests" (Quasar 250). There are several theories that people have come up with: "unusual magnetic fields, paranormal phenomena, and the underwater city of Atlantis, and even alien abduction" ("Bermuda Triangle"). After looking at it, there seems to be some natural causes to the disappearances. Methane gas, the Atlantic Undersea Test and Evaluation Center (AUTEC), and hexagonal clouds all could be a culprit when it comes to all the strange disappearances. It has been stated, "When Dead Sea animals and plants decompose they create methane gas." (Whiting 20). "Oceanographers have recently found that the Bermuda Triangle contains the richest deposits of methane gas on the planet" (Steward 81–84). ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The Canadian sales were excellent; compared to the United States where we've had a drop in sales. Fierce competition and the milk price have been the two factors linked to this decline. • 69. Im Not The Only One Analysis The song I chose "I'm Not The Only One" by Sam Smith relates perfectly towards Ed from "Man Descending". A common theme, which relates to both Ed and "Im Not The Only One", is cheating on a significant other. The slow beat and emotional message of "Im Not The Only One" gives the listener an emotional setting similar to Ed's situation. The lyric "When you call me baby I know I'm not the only one", and "for months on end I have had my doubt", implies that Sam's significant other is in another relationship calling two people baby, while Sam has been suspicious about it for months. Similar to Ed, who has his doubts about his wife Victoria's faithfulness towards him, the lines "My powers of invention are stretched to believe that Victoria might be unfaithful towards my body type." And "Sex with Howard, I surmise would be athletic and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... • 71. Only One View in a Story "Show people as one thing and one thing only over and over again and that is what they become." (Chimamanda Ngozi) That is the danger of a singles story, it makes equal humanity difficult to recognize and it emphasizes people's differences instead of their similarities. A single story is an incomplete recollection of information. "Power is the ability not just to tell the story of another person, but to make it the definitive story of that person."(Ngozi) In relation to US history, a single story is all many people have heard, like Ngozi states "Start the story with the arrows of the Native Americans, and not with the arrival of the British, and you have an entirely different story. Start the story with the failure of the African state, and not with the colonial creation of the African state, and you have an entirely different story." Many history textbooks only tell a single story, often times they are cleaned up before being presented to American youth. Information that is suppressed has left the youth ignorant of much of U.S. history. People like Howard Zinn and James W. Loewen are attempting to change this. They are trying to tell more than one side of the story, they are not suppressing information so that history can be taught accurately. In Loewen's book, Lies My Teacher Told Me, he states "Textbooks should include some people based not only on what they achieved but also on the distance they traversed to achieve it." This quote can relate to many U.S. heroes that are ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

A seat in the Garden Essay I'm not the Indian you had in mind; a video that was written and directed by Thomas King challenges the stereotypical image that America has towards Native Americans. King is also the author of a short novel "A seat in the Garden". This short story also challenges the established perspective that American society has towards the Native Americans. There are various stereotypes and perspectives that a majority of the public has toward a particular group. For example some of the common stereo types that are seen throughout the media are that all Asians are good at math, women are primarily sex objects, All Africans like fried chicken, and all Mexicans are gangsters. That afternoon when the police showed up and Joe explained to him where the Indian was and how he was going to take him down earlier, but he tripped and fell in his attempt. The officer asked if the Indian looked familiar and Joe replied "no there aren't any Indians around here" and his friend Red the corrected him by reminding him of some guys who come around on weekends. Joe replied "those old winos?" When the topic searching wasn't going well I tried to define the word family. Ooh did I think long and hard, but realized that everybody's definition was personal and different based on their feelings and memories. I thought long and hard into my family history and adorned the memory of our vacation to South Dakota, along with the activities attached to the trip. In my family narrative, I will be explaining a family trip to Mt. Rushmore, Kalahari, and the wild experience of standing on a glass box staring down in the Willis Tower, trying to unlock my personal definition of the word family. Now, let's jump to the exhilarating trip to South Dakota! Have you ever wondered what it was like to stand in front of Abraham Lincoln or George Washington? They were on a high mountain called Mt. Rushmore. While there we visited the Sculptor's Studio and the Lincoln Borglum Museum. I think I can say that the whole family liked the Sculptors Studio the best of all. In the studio, you were given a face to face look at some of the tools used to carve the important faces in the mountain. After we left there, everything went downhill. All of the little kids were whining while the older ones were bored out of their mind. The only ones that seemed to be enjoying themselves were my parents. "Ooh look at this. Oh yeah, this is a cool monument." Now the real action occurred ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Personal Narrative: The Only One The Only one 2014 my final year of high school, I honestly like school with the exception, of math, and this might come as a shock to a lot of people, but art. After three long years of school, I was incredibly happy, that I was a senior at Stamford High School, and I was on my way out the door, into a cap and gown and finally done, well at least for that chapter of my life. So when I received my student schedule for the school year I was excited, I only needed three out of seven classes to graduate, which where mathematics, English, and you probably guessed it art, but at that time I didn't realize that. In all honesty, I was only planning on doing the bare minimum to graduate, so by that logic, I was only going to attend math and English and then just figure out how to waste my time, but that's another story for a different day. As the first day of school rolled around everything was going great parked my truck said hello to all my friends, went to my first period class and then came second period, it was time for art. • 79. The One and The Only Jimmy Valvano Essay The One and The Only Jimmy Valvano "Never give up! Failure and rejection are only the first step to succeeding". These were the words that the late Jimmy Valvano gave to his audience at the ESPY Awards on March 3rd 1993. The ESPY Awards are sponsored by ESPN each year for those recognized for their achievement in sports. Almost 21 years ago, "Jimmy V" as he was known gave his speech because he was not told to; rather, he gave his speech because he was qualified to influence a revolution. James wanted to accomplish all of his dreams with blood, sweat, and tears of hard work, and loyalty to the game he loved. Those blood, sweat and tears began to develop before the speech even started, and transpired till the very end, setting up how Valvano would approach what he would actually say. The first clip of the speech would be Jimmy V walking up the stage weary about the possibility of falling in front of the soon to be audience. For anybody who knows somebody who has, or who had cancer, walking up those few steps to get onto the stage were basically equivalent to climbing Mount Everest. Vigilant of potentially falling and showing how weak he actually was only developed Valvano's emotional tone of the speech that never gave way. Since Jimmy V did not have a preplanned speech he spoke from his heart analyzing how close one can come from failure, to how much more you need to achieve for success. As words started sputtering out, Valvano used his emotional tone to organize what he actually wanted to inspire throughout the rest of the speech. Valvano had planned to be emotional, humorous, sympathetic, and straight forward throughout the whole speech to build up to this moment where he expects everyone watching to be more aware of cancer research because it is just as important as AIDS research.
