Analysis Of Holding Up The Arts By Diane Ragsdale
I want to start off with how much I loved the paper Holding Up the Arts by Diane Ragsdale. Ragsdale did an amazing job giving life to a problem that
authors have struggled to do no matter the length of their works. As a result, the dilemma within the art's nonprofit sector doesn't come across off as
dry and lengthy, but rather easy to understand and relatable. As an artist, she was able to bring together two worlds that both exist within the arts, but
are difficult to tie together – the artistic side and the economic side. Many of the papers I've read so far did well to focus and truly delve into the
economic problems of the nonprofit sector, but failed to tie than in with what was happening on the local level –the artists and the art themselves.

The Pros And Cons Of Dog Training
Dog whispering is established through firm, physical gestures making your dog aware that you are in charge and in control as the alpha male. Cesar
Millan, a renowned dog trainer, was recently accused of abusing a dog during training. His technique of training is referred to as 'dog whispering'.
The main points of this method are as followed; first and most importantly is establishing your role as a pack leader. Secondly, control your voice in a
soft–spoken and gentle demeanor. The use of body language and signals along with eye contact are also a part of this training method. If you treat
dogs with respect and dignity they deserve, they will enjoy behaving for you. The final aspect of this method is exercise. Dogs need more exercise
than you... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
With that being said, dog owners have to train them to become disciplined. Bekoff and Millan disagree with each other because they both have
their own techniques for training dogs. Bekoff doesn't believe that it is acceptable to hit the animals in any way. Millan believes that it is
appropriate to use electric shock collars and spike chokers when dealing with an aggressive dog. They agree that during training there needs to be a
sense of a calm and loving environment. I think that dogs deserve to be treated with dignity, but they also need to be trained to be obedient. If not,
dogs will do whatever they want; pee in the house, tear up pillows or blankets, bark excessively, etc. I agree that dogs should not be abused during
training. I don't believe that Cesar Millan abuses dogs during their trainings, because his techniques teaches the dogs to be more obedient. He is
clearly successful at what he does because he gets hired by A–list celebrities and he has his own television show, which has made him millions. He
came to America with nothing and his gift of being able to train dogs has made him a successful man. After reading both articles, I am still unsure of
what defines the line between discipline and

80's Fashion Trends Essay
The 1990's was known to be one of American's favorite decades. It was a time period of grunge music, great TV shows, fun toys and electronics, but
out of all the amazing, popular trends in the 90's, my absolute, all–time favorite is the fashion. Back in the 80's, people were more dressed and dolled
up, but the 90's generation was way more laid back when it came to clothing. There was a wide variety of casual grunge filled with chokers, band tees,
flannels, Doc Martens, and so much more. In the 1990's decade the biggest rock trend was Punk Rock music. The band that was considered "the
anthem" of Grunge was Nirvana, lead singer Kurt Cobain, in 1994 committed suicide. Everyone loved him and was devastated. After his death, people
started dressing in honor of the band and their music. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
While the 80's dress was more elaborate, the 90's was more easygoing. The most common thing the public wore was band T's, Doc Martens, baggy
jeans, and flannels. There were some other accessories such as Jansport backpacks, Baby G's, and big watches were a big deal; also tattoo chokers,
the more you wore, the more popular you were. Overalls were pretty vogue as well, but make sure one strap is undone! As I mentioned earlier,
Cobain's death had a huge impact in the 90's. Apparel was mostly influenced by the music at the time. Grunge clothing was already in the rage before
the suicide of Kurt Cobain, but after that, society made sure to carry on this course for remembrance and in honor of the lead singer. Most people
would say they miss this time period. The fashion is coming back in style. I mean, hey, I'm wearing a flannel at this moment. Personally, I wish I
grew up in the 90's. The clothing style was pretty broad and casual while very grungy. But, it wasn't all dark and hard rock; it was more of a soft
grunge. Need a better visual? Think of the old TV shows such as

Perfect Gold Necklace Persuasive Essay
Here at Cristaluna USA LLC in Fort Lauderdale, FL, we know jewelry. When it's time to find the perfect gold necklace to pair with a certain outfit,
turn to us. We have lengths, styles, and designs that are sure to pair well with any outfit. The first thing to consider when choosing a gold necklace
to wear with an outfit, is the length. A longer necklace will give your torso a longer look. A shorter necklace, such as a choker will shorten the look
of your torso. However, this is not to say that chokers should be avoided. If you're wearing a strapless dress, a choker can look stunning. Since the dress
is strapless, the look won't be choppy and shortened. A v–neck top or dress pairs well with a long necklace. It can fall to the V in the top, or

Fahrenheit 451 Week 3 Assignment
I picked the top panel on page seven of chapter 12. I picked this panel because of the shape, the iconography, and the closure that is created. This
panel is in the shape of a rectangle and makes it seem like this moment is stretched out and paused. It is very still because of all the death that is
blocked off by the gutter, but it is still surrounding freezing it into a quiet moment of stillness. It is also a moment–to–moment transition panel, so the
sense of time being stretched is further emphasized by this. If you look at Laurie's distressed face, you will notice that her tear is the shape of the
blood splatter on the iconic Watchmen smiley face symbol. With a little closure, it makes it seem as though she is crying tears of blood for all the
dead people. Also, Laurie is wearing a choker with a skull icon on it that tactfully emphasizes the destruction of New York.

Violence In The Bloody Chamber
Throughout Carter's "The Bloody Chamber," the stain on the narrator's forehead represents the violence that is hidden within masculinity authority.
The narrator is controlled by her husband and only follows his orders. However, once the narrator gains knowledge of the violence that her husband
does, her destiny is challenged.
Carter has the narrator controlled by her husband, who acts as a puppet master. The narrator being married to Marquis unfolds the story of the
transitioning from a child into a married woman. For instance, the narrator is forced to wear a ruby choker. She says, "he made me put on my choker"
(Carter 15). The choker can be viewed as a collar between a pet and its owner. Marquis asserts his dominance over his wife by making

The Bloody Chamber In the short story "The Bloody Chamber" by Angela Carter depicts a naГЇve young girl who is also the narrator who marries a
widow named Marquis. The girl is excited to venture into the world of adulthood, but that excitement ceases when she discovers the horrifying truth
of her new husband. Her husband begins to display a side that she has never seen before and what was supposed to be a fairy tale love becomes a story
full of lust and violence. In this unconventional damsel in distress tale, the narrator incorporates imagery, metaphor, and allusion to portray sexual
innuendo and male dominance the husband exerts on women. Right before the narrator and Marquis, her groom is about to wed, he already
started to display a dark side of him though that thought was shrugged off for the time being. She had noticed that he looked at her as if he was a
"connoisseur inspecting horseflesh (6)," highlight the metaphor to compare the bride to that of a tasty meat at the market. By inspecting her as if
she was some kind of object highlights Marquis preference for dominance over women and his violent sexual nature. The narrator becomes the
object of his fetish and as the "horseflesh" represents her body, it becomes sexualized in his eyes. As Marquis is compared to that of a "connoisseur,"
this elevates him to a status where he becomes something of an expert in choosing the "right" kind of girl who is pure in order for

Chapter One I had enough of all the bad things in my life. "Mikena, time to go to school." My mom said. I grabbed my small, mint green backpack
and I went out the front door. My dad was waiting outside. He gave me a kiss on the forehead. I felt like a princess at that moment. My dad went
inside the car and I started walk to school. My dad is going to his workplace which is a restaurant. I arrived at my school in less than ten minutes.
That's a new record. I saw Alicia with her friends on the lawn of the school. She was laughing with her friends. Some of her friends shoved their dirty,
little mouths into the hottest guys of the school. I felt very nauseous. Alicia is my worst enemy, but she's very pretty like a princess. She is my... Show

up and down in front of her. I stopped jumping and said,"You're going to be my slave forever." Alicia was scared. I had a huge smirk on my face. I
made her scared. I finally let out the fire in me. I made some dolls for Alicia. I made the dolls look just like her, but each doll has a different outfit. I
stroked Alicia's arm and then I grabbed Alicia's arm. "After school, you will go to my house. Your stuff is already at my house." I said. I expected

The Bloody Chamber Symbolism
In "The Bloody Chamber," Angela Carter tells the tale of a seventeen–year–old girl who marries an older, wealthy Marquis. Like many other clever
authors, Carter gives the reader an opportunity to determine the outcome of the story before the ending is reached through her symbolism and
allusions which foreshadow the ending. In doing so, she not only provides insight into what will happen next but also further develops each of the
characters through these complex symbols that she incorporates throughout the story. Carter first alludes to the outcome of the story by introducing
the ruby choker that the Marquis gave as a wedding gift within the first few pages of the narrative. She describes it as, "a choker of rubies, two inches
wide, like an extraordinarily precious slit throat" (6). The reader can infer a considerable amount from this one simple... Show more content on

He orders her to "put on that white dress you wore to hear Tristan and the necklace that prefigures your end," suggesting as though he has known her
demise was inescapable from the moment he gave her the choker (40). Regardless of whether or not the reader had missed the clues that Carter left
earlier in the story, this reference to the choker is much more explicit, as it contrasts the dark ruby color with the bright white dress. This illustrates the
theme of innocence versus violence, which is seen all throughout the story. The explicit revelation of the necklace "prefiguring" her end shows that the
symbolism that Carter incorporated in the story begins subtler and becomes more straightforward towards the end. While not all of Carter's elements of
foreshadowing may have been as lengthy and apparent as the ruby red choker, not a single one fell short of its quality and effectiveness in helping her
to reach the overall effect of building anticipation and increasing tensions throughout the

Analysis Of Mrs. Richard Skinner
John Singleton Copley's a Bostonian Anglo–American Painter who lived in the late 1700s to early 1800s. One of Copley's most infamous works of
art is the painting, "Mrs. Richard Skinner." This painting is noted in being a woman named Dorothy Wendell (Dorothy Quincy). Dorothy Wendell
came from a reputable family "Quincy family" and was wed to John Hancock, a well–known political figure. Copley is trying to convey the struggles
of women during the eighteenth century and the yearn for equal rights which are reflected on the subject Mrs. Richard Skinner. This is shown through
the way Copley expresses and emphasizes Mrs. Richard Skinner femininity. This painting was created in 1772, in the midst of the American
Revolution, which is usually... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Mrs. Richard Skinner's dress is very form fitting and looks quite confining, this is how most women dressed at this time. This is symbolic of the
confining lifestyle that Mrs. Richard Skinner and many other women of this era lived. Copley was notorious for illustrating wealth through clothing
pieces and fabrics. It is evident that Mrs. Richard Skinner is dressed in a lavish gown which demonstrates that the subject is indeed wealthy. This
technique allows anyone looking at this painting to pick up on this queue, even without knowing the subject's true identity. The background of the
painting is very dark and a reflective of the dark times some women were in during this time. The dark background and the subject's serious persona
give the painting a mysterious sensation. Mrs. Richard Skinner's clothing pieces are very light colors which give a light–hearted ambiance to the
painting but the dark background, dim lighting, and the dark table that lay before her completely alter the mood of the painting. The lighting of the
painting, therefore, emphasizes Mrs. Richard Skinner even more due to her dark surroundings, which is another example of Copley's attempt at
accentuating her womanhood. Some of the props in this painting elaborate and stress her sexuality even further. The subject is holding a flower in the
painting; flowers are symbolic of purity and femininity. The way the subject is holding the flowers is to be noted as well. She is holding

Mob Mentality In The Crucible
Mob Mentality
The brisk air fills the lungs of the students who shout, cheer, and sing in the bleachers of the sports stadium. One student starts the chant, as others
follow, the next chanting louder than the first. It's unlikely that these students would be yelling and singing the way they do if they were the only person
doing it. This is mob mentality. The person starting this trend has a threshold of zero, because they didn't need anyone to do it before they did,
whoever is next has a threshold of one and the next, two and so on. Mob mentality is how people are influenced by their peers to adopt certain
behaviors and a threshold is how many people it takes for this influence to be adapted by their peers. Mob mentality can be seen in many ways in The
Crucible and at Blue Valley West. Groups spreading the pressures of things likebullying, accusations, and clothing in order to fit in are all great
examples of mob mentality.
When people are part of a group, they often start to deviate from their personalities, and tend to focus on the opinions and actions of the group.
Groups can generate a sense of engaging energy, which can lead to behaviors that a person would not typically engage in if they were alone. People
seem to believe that certain behaviors are acceptable when they are in groups that would otherwise not be acceptable if they were alone. Many people
believe they cannot be held responsible for their actions when they are with a group because they see the

Testing A Dog Is Not For The Individual
Training a dog is not for the fainthearted. It requires patience, repetition and praise. Keep in mind that some breeds are easier to train that others, but
as one trainer told me "there are no dogs that fail, but the owners who fail." HOW TO GET STARTED To begin, there are a few supplies that should
be at your disposal. Have treats ready to use for rewarding your dog while he is learning. This may be controversial, but for training purposes a choker
chain works best. A good leash to attach to the choker chain will be needed in addition. Hold each training session a few times a day. Dogs lose their
concentration after 10–15 minutes, Keep each session short and training will be easier for both of you. Any member of your family, that will interact
with your dog, must go through the training with him also. After putting the choker chain and leash on your dog, have him sit. Say "sit" while
pushing back on his rear end, The next step, while he is sitting, is to throw a treat in front of the dog, so that he can see it, but just out of his reach.
When your pet gets up to go get the treat, give a sharp tug on the leash. Then put him back in the sitting position. This step may take a few tries
before moving on. Remember that praise is important by saying "good boy," giving him a pat and a treat. As the dog progresses and you feel ready
for the next step, put him in the sit position. Hold the leash loosely and walk in front of him. Turn your hand, palm out, saying stay. Each time

Example Of Collective Behavior
Collective behavior is a huge term for sociologists, with a broad spectrum of meanings. Collective behavior can be defines as "actions of groups of
people who bypass the usual norms governing their behavior and do something unusual" (Henslin 624). Collective behavior is basically people joining
together to do things; groups of people behaving collectively.
There are many examples of collective behavior. Examples of collective behavior can be seen every day, all across the world. A few forms of collective
behavior are riots, rumors, panics, fads, and urban legends.
Riots are often fueled by senses of injustice, frustration, and anger (Henslin 628). Riots are often seen after groups of people feel negatively towards a
certain thing. These people collectively group together and riot to try to change these circumstances. Riots can often turn violent and end in lots of
destruction. The people collectively involved in riots are often fueled with anger and passion towards their riot movement, which can result in
"violent crowd behavior directed at people, and property" (Henslin 628). Sometimes, riots can even result in death. "In the Gordon riots of 1780, the
demonstration took a heavy toll on property and freed inmates of prions but there is no evidence they killed anyone. However, 285 rioters were killed
during the riots and another 25 were hanged afterwards" (Couch 313). According to Henslin, the riot is not the most important aspect, but what the
rioters are trying to

The Profit Price Based Organizations
Profit Profit price based organizations are based around two main ideas one is target return and the other is maximizing profit (From the expert:
Price objectives or orientation. (n.d.). Maximizing profit is a challenging aspect in business because the company needs to find a price point at which
customers are happy, while also maximizing returns and profit. The company that comes to mind is Reliance Steel and Aluminum Co. Reliance is the
largest metal service center in the world and now is over a 10 billion dollar fortune 500 company. Reliance sells steel B2B on a daily basis with the
intention of maximizing profits. The pricing strategy of discounting and allowances for steel really depends on the market and the value of steel in the
US and around the world. Reliance has to have a very fluid pricing strategy in place to make adjustments depending on the currently volatile steel
market. There are certain customers that have loyalty to the Reliance name and then there are others that shop solely based on price and the lowest cost
available. Reliance prices their steel based on each individual account and the reason for that is to maximize profit and return.
Sales
Organizations which utilize a sales orientation to set pricing are trying to increase revenue through an increase in the number sales of their offerings

Bully In Elizabeth Woods's Choker
The novel, Choker, by Elizabeth Woods portrays a similar message as the artwork created by Valerie Vargas, for both pieces exhibit the means by
which bullying isolates the youth and destroys lives. To begin, Cara, in Choker, is tormented by her peers due to her lack of companionship and her
seemingly abnormal qualities. Specifically, she is often teased for her quirks and twitches and was nicknamed by her bullies as "Choker" following an
incident during lunch in which she choked on her meal for the entirety of the cafeteria to witness. This tournament is evident within a particular
exchange between her and the bullies in which "Alex's green eyes narrowed. She bent toward Cara's face. 'What's the matter with your eye, Choker?'

A murmur went through the onlookers. 'Where?' 'What's her eye doing?' 'Move, I can't see.' People clustered closer. Cara looked around wildly. She
could feel the twitching getting faster. She clapped one hand over her eye and, spinning around, shoved her way through the crowd" (Woods 21). In
this moment, Cara's humiliation is put on public display as a "crowd" of people "cluster" around her to observe her "twitching". As this transpires and
the mass closes in "closer", Cara draws more and more into herself, shielding her "eye" from those who surround her. This traumatic experience was
induced by Alexis's remarks, which she declared intentionally "loud", towards this quirk, comparing her eye's "wild" movements to that of a "jumping

Choker Necklaces Research Paper
Choker necklaces are a current trend, but they've been around for a long time. Gathering popularity from the necks of Egyptian Royalty circa 60 B.C.,
European Prostitutes in the 1800s, and Movie Stars of the 1990s, choker necklaces have made their way through many cultures and decades of fashion.
Within the past few years, chokers have made a noticeable comeback in the fashion world. Mainly in teens and young adults who follow pop culture,
chokers are seen on various people. This trend first came back to the radar, seemingly at runway shows, after a dwindle in their popularity since the 90s.
At the Spring/ Summer New York Fashion Week debuted chokers from many major brands including Gucci, Dior, Chanel, and many more. This staple

This accessory "in ancient times, was thought to give a woman power" as said by Yvonne Markowitz, the Rita J. Kaplan and Susan B. Kaplan Curator
Emerita of Jewelry Museum of Fine Arts (MFA), Boston, to the National Jeweler online.
Throughout the French Revolution, women wore red ribbons around their necks as a tribute to those taken to the guillotine. This solidarity trend
spread from France to England when the use of the guillotine was common. To further its popularity, the ribbon began to be tied at the back, or
crossed into an X as more of a fashion statement. Also, women began to add cameos or jewels to the ribbons.
According to The National Jeweler online, by the 1800's, the choker had gathered multiple meanings in Europe. A black ribbon around the neck was
generally used to identify prostitutes. Also during this time, painter Edgar Degas, painted ballerinas wearing black ribbons. His choice in subject has
been debated to elongate the necks of his subjects but also, that it was in reference to prostitution. The argument for Degas using the ribbons to
comment on the popularity of ballerina lifestyle of this time period. Ballerinas were often from working class families who were often taken advantage

Angela Carter's Bloody Chamber
In Angela Carter's "Bloody Chamber," the unnamed narrator is an underprivileged heroine. At the beginning of the text the heroine is flashing back
to the night before her wedding. She is preparing herself to be married to a very powerful, respected and wealthy older rich man, The Marquis. The
Heroine's mother does not approve but cannot stop her. The Marquis showers the young Heroine, only seventeen years old, with many gifts. The
heroine pursues the marriage and soon after moves into The Marquis' castle. The Heroine is forced to consummate the marriage and have painful,

The Marquis has acquired several wives in the past decade. All three wives have mysteriously vanished within days after their marriage to The
Marquis. The Heroine admits to her mother that she does not love The Marquis, but she wants to marry him anyways. She is certain that he can
give her all the luxurious items she has ever wanted. However, she finds herself in competition with The Marquis deceased wives, the opera singer,
the model and the Romanian Countess. All three women were exquisitely talented and beautiful. The young Heroine only seventeen states,
"Married three times with my own brief lifetime to three different graces, now, as if to demonstrate the eclecticism of his taste, he has invited me
to join his gallery of beautiful women"(Carter 10). It is apparent that the narrator sees herself as a possession. The Marquis just wants to add her to
his collection of women, 'literally.' The Marquis showers the Heroine with expensive gifts. The Marquis gives the Heroine a ruby choker. The
choker is a symbolism of sexual violence and objectification. The Heroine says, "His wedding gift, clasp round my throat. A choker of rubies two
inches wide, like an extraordinary precious slit throat"(Carter 11). The narrator describes the piece of jewelry with such constraints. The ruby necklace
makes the Heroine feel like a hostage, like she is something that can be owned.

Examples Of Sadism In The Bloody Chamber

One of them is the theme of power and objectification. The sadistic pictures that the Marquis collects in are is the ultimate example of the woman as
object and the man as powerful manipulator.
Influenced by the writings of the Marquis de Sade, Carter illustrates his idea that sex is often inextricably linked with violence. In his Bloody Chamber
the Marquis has not only a collection of violent pornography and but this is also the place where he tortures his wives. He finds pleasure in violence; he
is in love withthe pain he causes to them.
The bloody chamber is a place of both violence and enlightenment, as the the heroine discovers the true nature of her husband's desires and her own

Envy And Jealousy In Gwen Bristow's Works
What first started as an opuscule feature in an article known as The State, (a newspaper in Columbia, South Carolina) soon grew to a collection of
outstanding novels, Gwen Bristow was one of the few women who received recognition for her works of literature. Growing up in Louisiana in the
1900's, women were never perceived as being writers due to lack of schooling for girls. However, with the faith of her husband ,Bruce Manning,
Bristow continued on writing a created the soon to be well known novel, Celia Garth. With 44 years of practice, Gwen obtained a great amount of
knowledge when using literary devices in her work. For instance, within Celia Garth, Gwen Bristow used symbolism to enhance the quality of her
writing, an example of symbolism ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Known for his numerous uses of color symbolism, Shakespeare, composed two prominent phrases, "green with envy" and "the green sickness"
(Shakespeare 3. 1–3). These two expressions originate from Othello, a play written by William Shakespeare in 1603. Although Bristow did not
quote Shakespeare, she did use his interpretation of the hue in her own work. For instance, Celia's green choker's purpose was to show the
growing envy within Celia's cousin Roy. Throughout the book, Roy deliberately goes to Celia claiming "'That the necklace is an heirloom,
entitled to the eldest son in each generation. Therefore, it belonged to my father and now it belongs to me'"(Bristow 66). However, the truth was
the only reason he was so deeply interested in the necklace was to impress his new spouse Sophia, and after constant nagging, Celia gave up the
heirloom. In this case, the emerald choker expressed Roy's envy since he wished for the necklace to be his own. Although Roy was not a major
essence in Celia's life, the only time Roy would contact Celia was to take ownership of her possessions. Despite Celia's lack of wealth, her envious
cousin continued to crave. It grew to be so intense that not only did he seize Celia's belongings, but "she had not thought of the chance that Roy
might take Sea Garden" Vivian's property, which was previously owned by Celia's boss and was also, at the time, where Miss. Garth was residing
(Bristow 360). Gwen Bristow used the green in the emerald necklace to display the burgeoning greed Roy had, and how it grew from a green
necklace to a plantation; however, envy is not the only way Bristow used green to add acumen to her writing, this hue in particular also symbolised

Grunge Fashion: A Textual Analysis Of Postmodernism
Postmodernism is a term used to describe a range of text and materials, from philosophy to architecture to literature to music and numerous other areas.
Postmodernism marks a departure from modernism which has been seen, by some commentators, as ending sometime after World War Two (GIVE
LYOTARD QUOTE AFTER AUSWITZ).Postmodernism also explores the idea that there is no longer authenticity in the world, everything is a copy
of a copy and that people now live in a world of excessive consumerism. As Jarmusch remarks in Copy, copy, copy, "Authenticity is invaluable;
originality is non–existent." – (2015: 20)

A number of media texts have changed and adapted original experiences to the point that "reality" is only identified when it is duplicated in simulation.
Truth and reality are explained to the point that today's culture are no longer about to tell the difference between reality and fantasy. Baudrillard refers
to the blur between mediated experience and reality as "hyper–reality." Hyper–reality is the outcome of systematic simulation, a process in which
symbols are increasingly applied to replace genuine objects and experiences. Icons or signs are substitutes as simplified and clearer simulations of
reality. Easily understandable and detectable signs cover and conclusively reinstate the actual thing or experience, becoming more "real" than reality
itself. Therefore, hyperreality is a strong blur between appearance and reality. Stephen Best and Douglas Kellner suggest there are two types of
hyperreality; 'strong' and 'weak' (Mason, 2007: 151).
90s grunge fashion is an example of weak hyperreality as consumers are able to observe the blur between the reality and simulation, for example –
chokers, a tight accessory worn around the neck – often resembling a piece of ribbon, worn in the 1990's (see figure 1) The accessory has now become
popular again and can be found in almost every high street

How Does Banquo Have Harsh Action In Macbeth
Socrates once said, "He who is not contented with what he has, would not be contented with what he would like to have." If man is not happy with
what he has, that man will desire more, leading him to commit harsh actions. In England, William Shakespeare, a poet and playwright, wrote the play
Macbeth. In the play, Macbeth, Thane of Glamis, and Banquo, Macbeth's best friend, receive a prophecy from the weird sisters stating Macbeth will be
Thane of Cawdor and King, and Banquo will have kids that become king. Both Macbeth and Banquo take these thoughts to heart, but Banquo does not
turn these thoughts into actions. In the play Macbeth, desire, a recurring idea which takes over Macbeth's logic, can prompt one to execute harsh actions.
In the beginning of the play, Lady Macbeth is a happy wife to Macbeth, needing no more than what they have. Lady macbeth, after reading a letter
from Macbeth, states, "Hie thee hither, That I may pour my spirits in thine ear, And chastise with the valor of my tongue, All that impedes thee from
the golden round" (Shakespeare 31). Directly after reading the letter, Lady Macbeth wants Macbeth to hurry home, so she can persuade him to kill the
king. She wants her husband to become king, so she ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Macbeth and Banquo learn the prophecy, the witches tell Banquo he will "get kings, though thou be none"(Shakespeare 19) This concerns Macbeth
because his sons will not be king. His desire takes over his logic, prompting him to attempt to get rid of Banquo, his best friend, and Fleance, so there

Summary Of The Portrait Of A Lady In A Blue Dress
Copley's piece titled Portrait of a Lady in a Blue Dress created in 1763 by John Singleton Copley, represents an unnamed female portrait painted with
oil on canvas. The piece currently resides in the Art Institute of Chicago in Chicago, Illinois. The work of art can be seen from one side only because
it hangs on the wall. There is a great deal of indications in the painting to show the viewer who this woman was and how she ranked high within society.
The portrait is displayed horizontally with a gold trimmed frame. The subject is a female that looks to be in her early 20's sitting upright on a large
brown chair. If the viewer travels up the painting the first indication of the woman's class is her satin, blue dress. The saturated blue shines and falls in
the light like water. Paired with the dress are her exceptionally detailed endings to her sleeves. The lace is even painted as though it is translucent,
allowing a little of the blue dress to show through the sleeve. Flowers throughout history have symbolized innocence of a woman and her virginity. The
repeating theme of flowers, in the sleeve cuffs and ribbon) in the woman's attired suggests her purity or innocent nature. Another very details section of
the painting includes the corset/torso details. The sewing suggests texture in the torso with small beading in between. Towards the top of the chest in
the center, the female seems to bear an extravagant, ribbon piece with a tear drop bead in the center. The light pink

Sexual Components In Angela Carter's The Bloody Chamber
Throughout the literature we have read in this class, several books and short stories have had subtle sexual components. In Angela Carter's "The Bloody
Chamber," there are several important themes and characteristics that help give the reader the ability to understand the actions of both the narrator and
The Marquis, but sex and it's relation to power drives each character's actions and emotions. For the Marquis, he finds all the power in the relationship
by exemplifying sadistic behavior, constantly mocking and ridiculing the narrator, and ultimately looking to find satisfaction in her pain and potential
death. The narrator parallels the Marquis' sadism with masochism, often finding satisfaction and taking comfort in the pain that he causes.... Show more

The fact that this is the interpretation of sadomasochism that Angela Carter chose to represent is important because although the book is set during
a time period when feminism was not yet prevalent in the world, "The Bloody Chamber" was written after women's suffrage, in 1979. As soon as
ten years after the short story was published several works were also published that went against the Freudian model of sadomasochism. In Jessica
Benjamin's, The Bonds of Love, Benjamin discusses the idea that women can actually control their own subordination, therefore making the
"passive" partner equally as dominant as the aggressor, which gets rid of the notion that the dominant partner is always male. In "The Bloody
Chamber," we only see the young girl as someone who allows herself to gain no control over the power dynamic regarding the couple's relationship in
general. In fact, the only time we see the narrator stand up for herself, or even respond to the Marquis' comments towards her, is at the very end of the
story when she is stalling her death with the hope that her mother will

Sir Thomas More's Petticoats In King Henry V
This costume is designed for Sir Thomas' More's daughter, Margaret More, in the part of Act 1 Scene 7 when More's family interacts with King
Henry VIII during his visit to their home. Margaret is portrayed as a fine, young lady who is demure and well–educated; she is noted by King Henry
VIII as a 'scholar' whose Latin abilities surpasses his. As the daughter of a man of nobility, it is thus appropriate for her costume to be made out of
lavish materials with intricate details to reflect the wealth and status within her family. The first layer that would have been worn by a noble lady in
Tudor London is a smock, which was changed daily as people of higher classes prided themselves on being able to change into clean linen on a
regular basis. It is the innermost layer of clothing. It served as an undergarment to protect the body from sweat and the chafing that would ensue after
wearing heavy fabrics for extended periods of time. It was made with a low, square neckline and the ends its... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Petticoats may have been padded or quilted in order to achieve a structured shape to maintain the conical silhouette synonymous to the Tudor London
era. Petticoats are usually solid in colour and would have been made of cheap fabrics such as flannel and cotton, but in Margaret's case, it is most
likely that she wore a silk petticoat in a variation of red (crimson, scarlet, etcetera – it was apparently the most prevalent colour of choice for petticoats
as it was perceived to have properties of health) to reflect her status as silk is an exquisite and expensive fabric that only the nobility could afford to
use in their clothing. The petticoat served as an extra layer to keep the lady wearing it warm and as a barrier against the finer and more delicate layers
that would be worn over it – it prevented their damage from sweat and bodily

A Short Story : A Story?
My eyes fluttered open, sighing softly. My body felt restless after that reoccurring nightmare. I stretched out my arm, getting a glimpse at my wrist and
forearm– the two areas that were constantly attacked each time I relived that moment. The lavender hammock I laid in swayed, the cotton material
allowing my skin to feel relaxed. I stared at the plain ceiling. It was hard to search for the motivation to get out of my hammock every morning. A
weight was felt on the end of the hammock. Glancing over, I noticed a little grizzly bear cub attempting to climb up, but was having trouble.
Arcturis seems eager this morning, I thought. I sat up and scooped him into my arms. His bright eyes shone a light onto my heart, making it filled
with joy. I smiled lightheartedly at Arcturis. "Well, I guess I'll get up now, since you convinced me." I placed my feet onto the cold floor, setting
Arcturis down when I got into the kitchen and pulled out two bowls; one for his water and one for his food. I poured fresh, clean river water in his
bowl and took about three handfuls of berries to fill up his other one. I patted Arcturis on the head gently and got ready to leave the house. "Alright
buddy, wish me luck. I'm going to get these fixed," I explained, pointing at my eyes. Ever since I was born, my eyes were blank. Completely white.
To clarify further, I had no pupils or iris– only my sclera was present. Arcturis looked at me and moved his head down as if it was to show me that he

The Bloody Chamber By Angela Carter
Gender is a concept that has been socially constructed to identify people as male or female, masculine or feminine. The concept is used to regulate the
way people live and is something that influences the representation of female bodies in novels. There are several theories, such as the objectification
theory, the "male gaze" and the feminist theory, that help to understand the role of the women and show how they are oppressed and weak in
comparison to men. Angela Carter reinforces these theories by sharing similar ideas of male dominance and female redemption in her short novel, The
Bloody Chamber. Through her stories, "The Erl–King" "The Snow Child" and "The Bloody Chamber," Carter challenges and critiques the stereotypical
gender norms ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The text clearly focuses on the physical attributes of the girl and ignores discussing her inner and personal self. It shows how women are only
valued for their appearance, youth and innocence, which is why when the Marquis asks her to marry him, he does not do it out of love, but the
need for ownership over another wife. This is evident when she says, "I said that I would marry him, [but] not one muscle in his face stirred"
(Carter 9). Though the text does not state the reason for why he does not react to her answer in marriage, his behaviour suggests that he had no
doubt about her accepting his offer in marriage. He takes on the beliefs of a stereotypical male figure believing that they are the dominant figures in
society and have the power to take what they want. In this case, he wants the heroine. This is further looked at when the heroine takes into
consideration how the "Marquis had been married before, more than once " and wonders if "he [is] not still mourning for his last wife?" (Carter 9).
Her questions and curiosity provide insight into the Marquis' character as being someone who does not view marriage in terms of love for the other
person, but rather as a process that legally unites him to a woman, promoting patriarchy and gender norms. Nowhere in the story does it ever mention
why the Marquis decides to marry the heroine. Through their age difference, him being much older than she and his sexual acts towards her, it is
obvious that he does

Analysis Of Holding Up The Arts By Diane Ragsdale

  • 1. Analysis Of Holding Up The Arts By Diane Ragsdale I want to start off with how much I loved the paper Holding Up the Arts by Diane Ragsdale. Ragsdale did an amazing job giving life to a problem that authors have struggled to do no matter the length of their works. As a result, the dilemma within the art's nonprofit sector doesn't come across off as dry and lengthy, but rather easy to understand and relatable. As an artist, she was able to bring together two worlds that both exist within the arts, but are difficult to tie together – the artistic side and the economic side. Many of the papers I've read so far did well to focus and truly delve into the economic problems of the nonprofit sector, but failed to tie than in with what was happening on the local level –the artists and the art themselves. ... • 2. The Pros And Cons Of Dog Training Dog whispering is established through firm, physical gestures making your dog aware that you are in charge and in control as the alpha male. Cesar Millan, a renowned dog trainer, was recently accused of abusing a dog during training. His technique of training is referred to as 'dog whispering'. The main points of this method are as followed; first and most importantly is establishing your role as a pack leader. Secondly, control your voice in a soft–spoken and gentle demeanor. The use of body language and signals along with eye contact are also a part of this training method. If you treat dogs with respect and dignity they deserve, they will enjoy behaving for you. The final aspect of this method is exercise. Dogs need more exercise than you... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... With that being said, dog owners have to train them to become disciplined. Bekoff and Millan disagree with each other because they both have their own techniques for training dogs. Bekoff doesn't believe that it is acceptable to hit the animals in any way. Millan believes that it is appropriate to use electric shock collars and spike chokers when dealing with an aggressive dog. They agree that during training there needs to be a sense of a calm and loving environment. I think that dogs deserve to be treated with dignity, but they also need to be trained to be obedient. If not, dogs will do whatever they want; pee in the house, tear up pillows or blankets, bark excessively, etc. I agree that dogs should not be abused during training. I don't believe that Cesar Millan abuses dogs during their trainings, because his techniques teaches the dogs to be more obedient. He is clearly successful at what he does because he gets hired by A–list celebrities and he has his own television show, which has made him millions. He came to America with nothing and his gift of being able to train dogs has made him a successful man. After reading both articles, I am still unsure of what defines the line between discipline and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 4. 80's Fashion Trends Essay The 1990's was known to be one of American's favorite decades. It was a time period of grunge music, great TV shows, fun toys and electronics, but out of all the amazing, popular trends in the 90's, my absolute, all–time favorite is the fashion. Back in the 80's, people were more dressed and dolled up, but the 90's generation was way more laid back when it came to clothing. There was a wide variety of casual grunge filled with chokers, band tees, flannels, Doc Martens, and so much more. In the 1990's decade the biggest rock trend was Punk Rock music. The band that was considered "the anthem" of Grunge was Nirvana, lead singer Kurt Cobain, in 1994 committed suicide. Everyone loved him and was devastated. After his death, people started dressing in honor of the band and their music. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... While the 80's dress was more elaborate, the 90's was more easygoing. The most common thing the public wore was band T's, Doc Martens, baggy jeans, and flannels. There were some other accessories such as Jansport backpacks, Baby G's, and big watches were a big deal; also tattoo chokers, the more you wore, the more popular you were. Overalls were pretty vogue as well, but make sure one strap is undone! As I mentioned earlier, Cobain's death had a huge impact in the 90's. Apparel was mostly influenced by the music at the time. Grunge clothing was already in the rage before the suicide of Kurt Cobain, but after that, society made sure to carry on this course for remembrance and in honor of the lead singer. Most people would say they miss this time period. The fashion is coming back in style. I mean, hey, I'm wearing a flannel at this moment. Personally, I wish I grew up in the 90's. The clothing style was pretty broad and casual while very grungy. But, it wasn't all dark and hard rock; it was more of a soft grunge. Need a better visual? Think of the old TV shows such as ... When it's time to find the perfect gold necklace to pair with a certain outfit, turn to us. We have lengths, styles, and designs that are sure to pair well with any outfit. The first thing to consider when choosing a gold necklace to wear with an outfit, is the length. A longer necklace will give your torso a longer look. A shorter necklace, such as a choker will shorten the look of your torso. However, this is not to say that chokers should be avoided. If you're wearing a strapless dress, a choker can look stunning. Since the dress is strapless, the look won't be choppy and shortened. A v–neck top or dress pairs well with a long necklace. It can fall to the V in the top, or ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 6. Fahrenheit 451 Week 3 Assignment I picked the top panel on page seven of chapter 12. I picked this panel because of the shape, the iconography, and the closure that is created. This panel is in the shape of a rectangle and makes it seem like this moment is stretched out and paused. It is very still because of all the death that is blocked off by the gutter, but it is still surrounding freezing it into a quiet moment of stillness. It is also a moment–to–moment transition panel, so the sense of time being stretched is further emphasized by this. If you look at Laurie's distressed face, you will notice that her tear is the shape of the blood splatter on the iconic Watchmen smiley face symbol. With a little closure, it makes it seem as though she is crying tears of blood for all the dead people. Also, Laurie is wearing a choker with a skull icon on it that tactfully emphasizes the destruction of New York. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It has finally gone dark. • 9. Analysis Of The Movie ' The Bloody Chamber ' Han Tran Dr. Ewell English 308W November 15, 2016 The Bloody Chamber In the short story "The Bloody Chamber" by Angela Carter depicts a naГЇve young girl who is also the narrator who marries a widow named Marquis. The girl is excited to venture into the world of adulthood, but that excitement ceases when she discovers the horrifying truth of her new husband. Her husband begins to display a side that she has never seen before and what was supposed to be a fairy tale love becomes a story full of lust and violence. In this unconventional damsel in distress tale, the narrator incorporates imagery, metaphor, and allusion to portray sexual innuendo and male dominance the husband exerts on women. Right before the narrator and Marquis, her groom is about to wed, he already started to display a dark side of him though that thought was shrugged off for the time being. She had noticed that he looked at her as if he was a "connoisseur inspecting horseflesh (6)," highlight the metaphor to compare the bride to that of a tasty meat at the market. By inspecting her as if she was some kind of object highlights Marquis preference for dominance over women and his violent sexual nature. The narrator becomes the object of his fetish and as the "horseflesh" represents her body, it becomes sexualized in his eyes. As Marquis is compared to that of a "connoisseur," this elevates him to a status where he becomes something of an expert in choosing the "right" kind of girl who is pure in order for ... • 12. The Bloody Chamber Symbolism In "The Bloody Chamber," Angela Carter tells the tale of a seventeen–year–old girl who marries an older, wealthy Marquis. Like many other clever authors, Carter gives the reader an opportunity to determine the outcome of the story before the ending is reached through her symbolism and allusions which foreshadow the ending. In doing so, she not only provides insight into what will happen next but also further develops each of the characters through these complex symbols that she incorporates throughout the story. Carter first alludes to the outcome of the story by introducing the ruby choker that the Marquis gave as a wedding gift within the first few pages of the narrative. She describes it as, "a choker of rubies, two inches wide, like an extraordinarily precious slit throat" (6). The reader can infer a considerable amount from this one simple... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... He orders her to "put on that white dress you wore to hear Tristan and the necklace that prefigures your end," suggesting as though he has known her demise was inescapable from the moment he gave her the choker (40). Regardless of whether or not the reader had missed the clues that Carter left earlier in the story, this reference to the choker is much more explicit, as it contrasts the dark ruby color with the bright white dress. This illustrates the theme of innocence versus violence, which is seen all throughout the story. The explicit revelation of the necklace "prefiguring" her end shows that the symbolism that Carter incorporated in the story begins subtler and becomes more straightforward towards the end. While not all of Carter's elements of foreshadowing may have been as lengthy and apparent as the ruby red choker, not a single one fell short of its quality and effectiveness in helping her to reach the overall effect of building anticipation and increasing tensions throughout the ... • 13. Analysis Of Mrs. Richard Skinner John Singleton Copley's a Bostonian Anglo–American Painter who lived in the late 1700s to early 1800s. One of Copley's most infamous works of art is the painting, "Mrs. Richard Skinner." This painting is noted in being a woman named Dorothy Wendell (Dorothy Quincy). Dorothy Wendell came from a reputable family "Quincy family" and was wed to John Hancock, a well–known political figure. Copley is trying to convey the struggles of women during the eighteenth century and the yearn for equal rights which are reflected on the subject Mrs. Richard Skinner. This is shown through the way Copley expresses and emphasizes Mrs. Richard Skinner femininity. This painting was created in 1772, in the midst of the American Revolution, which is usually... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Mrs. Richard Skinner's dress is very form fitting and looks quite confining, this is how most women dressed at this time. This is symbolic of the confining lifestyle that Mrs. Richard Skinner and many other women of this era lived. Copley was notorious for illustrating wealth through clothing pieces and fabrics. It is evident that Mrs. Richard Skinner is dressed in a lavish gown which demonstrates that the subject is indeed wealthy. This technique allows anyone looking at this painting to pick up on this queue, even without knowing the subject's true identity. The background of the painting is very dark and a reflective of the dark times some women were in during this time. The dark background and the subject's serious persona give the painting a mysterious sensation. Mrs. Richard Skinner's clothing pieces are very light colors which give a light–hearted ambiance to the painting but the dark background, dim lighting, and the dark table that lay before her completely alter the mood of the painting. The lighting of the painting, therefore, emphasizes Mrs. Richard Skinner even more due to her dark surroundings, which is another example of Copley's attempt at accentuating her womanhood. Some of the props in this painting elaborate and stress her sexuality even further. The subject is holding a flower in the painting; flowers are symbolic of purity and femininity. • 14. Mob Mentality In The Crucible Mob Mentality The brisk air fills the lungs of the students who shout, cheer, and sing in the bleachers of the sports stadium. One student starts the chant, as others follow, the next chanting louder than the first. It's unlikely that these students would be yelling and singing the way they do if they were the only person doing it. This is mob mentality. The person starting this trend has a threshold of zero, because they didn't need anyone to do it before they did, whoever is next has a threshold of one and the next, two and so on. Mob mentality is how people are influenced by their peers to adopt certain behaviors and a threshold is how many people it takes for this influence to be adapted by their peers. Mob mentality can be seen in many ways in The Crucible and at Blue Valley West. Groups spreading the pressures of things likebullying, accusations, and clothing in order to fit in are all great examples of mob mentality. When people are part of a group, they often start to deviate from their personalities, and tend to focus on the opinions and actions of the group. Groups can generate a sense of engaging energy, which can lead to behaviors that a person would not typically engage in if they were alone. People seem to believe that certain behaviors are acceptable when they are in groups that would otherwise not be acceptable if they were alone. • 15. Testing A Dog Is Not For The Individual Training a dog is not for the fainthearted. It requires patience, repetition and praise. Keep in mind that some breeds are easier to train that others, but as one trainer told me "there are no dogs that fail, but the owners who fail." HOW TO GET STARTED To begin, there are a few supplies that should be at your disposal. Have treats ready to use for rewarding your dog while he is learning. This may be controversial, but for training purposes a choker chain works best. A good leash to attach to the choker chain will be needed in addition. Hold each training session a few times a day. Dogs lose their concentration after 10–15 minutes, Keep each session short and training will be easier for both of you. Any member of your family, that will interact with your dog, must go through the training with him also. After putting the choker chain and leash on your dog, have him sit. Say "sit" while pushing back on his rear end, The next step, while he is sitting, is to throw a treat in front of the dog, so that he can see it, but just out of his reach. When your pet gets up to go get the treat, give a sharp tug on the leash. Then put him back in the sitting position. This step may take a few tries before moving on. Remember that praise is important by saying "good boy," giving him a pat and a treat. As the dog progresses and you feel ready for the next step, put him in the sit position. Hold the leash loosely and walk in front of him. Turn your hand, palm out, saying stay. Each time ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 17. Example Of Collective Behavior Collective behavior is a huge term for sociologists, with a broad spectrum of meanings. Collective behavior can be defines as "actions of groups of people who bypass the usual norms governing their behavior and do something unusual" (Henslin 624). Collective behavior is basically people joining together to do things; groups of people behaving collectively. There are many examples of collective behavior. Examples of collective behavior can be seen every day, all across the world. A few forms of collective behavior are riots, rumors, panics, fads, and urban legends. Riots are often fueled by senses of injustice, frustration, and anger (Henslin 628). Riots are often seen after groups of people feel negatively towards a certain thing. These people collectively group together and riot to try to change these circumstances. Riots can often turn violent and end in lots of destruction. The people collectively involved in riots are often fueled with anger and passion towards their riot movement, which can result in "violent crowd behavior directed at people, and property" (Henslin 628). Sometimes, riots can even result in death. "In the Gordon riots of 1780, the demonstration took a heavy toll on property and freed inmates of prions but there is no evidence they killed anyone. However, 285 rioters were killed during the riots and another 25 were hanged afterwards" (Couch 313). The Profit Price Based Organizations Profit Profit price based organizations are based around two main ideas one is target return and the other is maximizing profit (From the expert: Price objectives or orientation. (n.d.). Maximizing profit is a challenging aspect in business because the company needs to find a price point at which customers are happy, while also maximizing returns and profit. The company that comes to mind is Reliance Steel and Aluminum Co. Reliance is the largest metal service center in the world and now is over a 10 billion dollar fortune 500 company. Reliance sells steel B2B on a daily basis with the intention of maximizing profits. The pricing strategy of discounting and allowances for steel really depends on the market and the value of steel in the US and around the world. Reliance has to have a very fluid pricing strategy in place to make adjustments depending on the currently volatile steel market. There are certain customers that have loyalty to the Reliance name and then there are others that shop solely based on price and the lowest cost available. Reliance prices their steel based on each individual account and the reason for that is to maximize profit and return. To begin, Cara, in Choker, is tormented by her peers due to her lack of companionship and her seemingly abnormal qualities. Specifically, she is often teased for her quirks and twitches and was nicknamed by her bullies as "Choker" following an incident during lunch in which she choked on her meal for the entirety of the cafeteria to witness. In this moment, Cara's humiliation is put on public display as a "crowd" of people "cluster" around her to observe her "twitching". As this transpires and the mass closes in "closer", Cara draws more and more into herself, shielding her "eye" from those who surround her. Known for his numerous uses of color symbolism, Shakespeare, composed two prominent phrases, "green with envy" and "the green sickness" (Shakespeare 3. 1–3). These two expressions originate from Othello, a play written by William Shakespeare in 1603. Although Bristow did not quote Shakespeare, she did use his interpretation of the hue in her own work. For instance, Celia's green choker's purpose was to show the growing envy within Celia's cousin Roy. Throughout the book, Roy deliberately goes to Celia claiming "'That the necklace is an heirloom, entitled to the eldest son in each generation. Therefore, it belonged to my father and now it belongs to me'"(Bristow 66). However, the truth was the only reason he was so deeply interested in the necklace was to impress his new spouse Sophia, and after constant nagging, Celia gave up the heirloom. In this case, the emerald choker expressed Roy's envy since he wished for the necklace to be his own. Although Roy was not a major essence in Celia's life, the only time Roy would contact Celia was to take ownership of her possessions. Despite Celia's lack of wealth, her envious cousin continued to crave. A number of media texts have changed and adapted original experiences to the point that "reality" is only identified when it is duplicated in simulation. Truth and reality are explained to the point that today's culture are no longer about to tell the difference between reality and fantasy. Baudrillard refers to the blur between mediated experience and reality as "hyper–reality." Hyper–reality is the outcome of systematic simulation, a process in which symbols are increasingly applied to replace genuine objects and experiences. Icons or signs are substitutes as simplified and clearer simulations of reality. Easily understandable and detectable signs cover and conclusively reinstate the actual thing or experience, becoming more "real" than reality itself. Therefore, hyperreality is a strong blur between appearance and reality. Stephen Best and Douglas Kellner suggest there are two types of hyperreality; 'strong' and 'weak' (Mason, 2007: 151). 90s grunge fashion is an example of weak hyperreality as consumers are able to observe the blur between the reality and simulation, for example – chokers, a tight accessory worn around the neck – often resembling a piece of ribbon, worn in the 1990's (see figure 1) The accessory has now become popular again and can be found in almost every high street ... If man is not happy with what he has, that man will desire more, leading him to commit harsh actions. In England, William Shakespeare, a poet and playwright, wrote the play Macbeth. The piece currently resides in the Art Institute of Chicago in Chicago, Illinois. The work of art can be seen from one side only because it hangs on the wall. There is a great deal of indications in the painting to show the viewer who this woman was and how she ranked high within society. The portrait is displayed horizontally with a gold trimmed frame. The subject is a female that looks to be in her early 20's sitting upright on a large brown chair. If the viewer travels up the painting the first indication of the woman's class is her satin, blue dress. The saturated blue shines and falls in the light like water. Paired with the dress are her exceptionally detailed endings to her sleeves. The lace is even painted as though it is translucent, allowing a little of the blue dress to show through the sleeve. Flowers throughout history have symbolized innocence of a woman and her virginity. The repeating theme of flowers, in the sleeve cuffs and ribbon) in the woman's attired suggests her purity or innocent nature. Another very details section of the painting includes the corset/torso details. The sewing suggests texture in the torso with small beading in between. The fact that this is the interpretation of sadomasochism that Angela Carter chose to represent is important because although the book is set during a time period when feminism was not yet prevalent in the world, "The Bloody Chamber" was written after women's suffrage, in 1979. As soon as ten years after the short story was published several works were also published that went against the Freudian model of sadomasochism. In Jessica Benjamin's, The Bonds of Love, Benjamin discusses the idea that women can actually control their own subordination, therefore making the "passive" partner equally as dominant as the aggressor, which gets rid of the notion that the dominant partner is always male.
