DEFINITION
• adjective
: of, relating to, or befitting a teacher or education
EXAMPLE:
"The report suggests that the exam be
multidimensional and include subject knowledge as
well as pedagogical knowledge. In other words, in
addition to having to know the subject they teach,
teachers would have to demonstrate that they had the
qualities to be 'caring, competent and confident.'" —

• DID YOU KNOW?
• "Pedagogical," was coined
in the early 17th century
from a Greek adjective of
the same meaning. That
adjective, "paidagōgikos,"
in turn derives from the
noun "paidagōgos,"
meaning "teacher."
• The English word
"pedagogue" (which can
simply mean "teacher")
derives from the same root.
Four Themes of Social Studies
Pedagogy
• Research
• Reflection
•Learning
•Leading
Research
• Students will be given the opportunity to review,
analyze, discuss, and apply research from diverse
perspectives in education,
• in order to reflect on their own capacities and
practices
• as they study, observe, and practice in the
classroom and with their cooperating teachers.
Reflection
• Students will be asked to produce written essays
• and critical observations (of about contemporary
issues) and teaching experiences (cooperating
teacher’s and one’s own)
• to help them fully utilize their analytic and
problem-solving skills needed to become a good
teacher.
Learning
That every student
should be
passionate about
their commitment
to equip themselves
for life-long learning
as future educators
and to equip their
students to be life-
long learners, as
well.
Leading
That the students will actively lead in their
schools, serving as models on excellent
pedagogical skills.
What do we need to know?
• Teaching requires disciplinary (multi- and inter-)
knowledge
• Pedgogical content
• Knowledge of pedagogy
• Requirement of knowing our own students
• Engaging our students in critical and higher-order
thinking
• Teaching our students to be “life-long learners”
• Present students with multiple perspectives
What do we have to do?
• Display research skills, deepen reflection, dedication to
learning and showcase leadership qualities
• Develop lesson and unit plans
• Develop assessment tools
• Reflect on teaching practices
• Focus on student-centered and activity-based methods
• Cater to diverse student population
• Collaborate with others (classmates and cooperating
teacher)
• Integrate technology (ICT)
