Occupational Safety and Health
 Prevention is better than cure like we know
 Culture is a way of life
 Prevention means to be proactive.
 To cure means to be reactive.
 To cure means you will be spending more.
 Incidents and accidents has two costs
1. Direct Cost refers to the measurable costs
arising directly from accident. E.g. Medical
bills
2. Indirect Cost refers to costs that are difficult
to quantify precisely.

 How can we as a company (PETROLEX) join in
building a culture of prevention on Occupational
safety and health in our workplace and Nigeria?
 We can do that by:
1. Visible management leadership.
2. Discouraging workplace culture(Getting the job
done at the expense of safety) and embracing Safety
Culture( Do it Right)
3. Introducing a behavioral system approach.
(SKILL – ATTITUDE – EXPERIENCE)

4. Encouraging proactive safety activities to take
place before an incident occurs and provide
tools to accomplish them.
5.Stimulate interaction and communication
throughout the organization between peers,
workers and supervisors, and between
supervisors and managers.

5. Applying Job safety Analysis(JSA) in carrying out our
task.
6. Introduction of root cause analysis which encourages
identifying underlying factors of conflicting motivations,
undesirable behaviors and conditions to be addressed
timely before it lead to fatality.
7. Ensuring near misses , incidents and accidents are
reported , investigated, controls put in place and lesson
learned shared among workers.
8. Ensuring prevention of incidents is managed as part of
our normal business.
9. Encouraging everyone to owns the process- not just
depending on the HSE Staff “to make safety happen”.

 Think Back...
 Unsafe work habits are reinforced when nothing bad happens, so it is difficult
to change behavior.
 Even before near losses occur, undesirable behavior contrary to the
organization's job standards can contribute to future incidents. In other words,
accidents don’t just happen – they are caused.
 Below the near loss level of the safety triangle, there are factors that can
contribute to future incidents.

 If we don't correct the problems at the base of the
triangle, we suffer the consequences at the top of the
triangle!

Join in building a culture of prevention on Occupational Safety and Health  Prevention is better than cure like we know  Culture is a way of life  Prevention means to be proactive.  To cure means to be reactive.  To cure means you will be spending more.  Incidents and accidents has two costs 1. Direct Cost refers to the measurable costs arising directly from accident. E.g. Medical bills 2. Indirect Cost refers to costs that are difficult to quantify precisely.

Join in building a culture of prevention on Occupational safety and health  How can we as a company (PETROLEX) join in building a culture of prevention on Occupational safety and health in our workplace and Nigeria?  We can do that by: 1. Visible management leadership. 2. Discouraging workplace culture(Getting the job done at the expense of safety) and embracing Safety Culture( Do it Right) 3. Introducing a behavioral system approach. (SKILL – ATTITUDE – EXPERIENCE)

Encouraging proactive safety activities to take place before an incident occurs and provide tools to accomplish them. 5.Stimulate interaction and communication throughout the organization between peers, workers and supervisors, and between supervisors and managers.
  • 7. Join in building a culture of prevention on OSH 5. Applying Job safety Analysis(JSA) in carrying out our task. 6. Introduction of root cause analysis which encourages identifying underlying factors of conflicting motivations, undesirable behaviors and conditions to be addressed timely before it lead to fatality. 7. Ensuring near misses , incidents and accidents are reported , investigated, controls put in place and lesson learned shared among workers. 8. Ensuring prevention of incidents is managed as part of our normal business. 9. Encouraging everyone to owns the process- not just depending on the HSE Staff “to make safety happen”.

Join in building a culture of prevention on OSH  Think Back...  Unsafe work habits are reinforced when nothing bad happens, so it is difficult to change behavior.  Even before near losses occur, undesirable behavior contrary to the organization's job standards can contribute to future incidents. In other words, accidents don’t just happen – they are caused.  Below the near loss level of the safety triangle, there are factors that can contribute to future incidents.
  • 9. Join in building a culture of prevention on OSH  If we don't correct the problems at the base of the triangle, we suffer the consequences at the top of the triangle! Minor Injury Equipment/ Property Damage Near Losses Major Injury Undesirable Behaviors & Conditions Conflicting Motivations & Root Causes Below the near loss level of the safety triangle, there are factors that can contribute to future incidents.
