3. Purpose:
Behaviour Based Safety is designed to encourage people’s actions toward safer outcomes, ideally by preventing an
accident or injury before it occurs. Implementing a behaviour based safety program is the most comprehensive way for
organizations to promote safety, eliminate hazards and prevent injuries.
Behaviour based safety (BBS):-
Focuses on the human side of safety
Defines safe and unsafe behaviour
Encourages safe behaviour and discourages unsafe or destructive behaviour
Involves employees in safety
4. Why behavioral SAFETY in important at workplace? :
Human beings are born bare by nature, with no competence, knowledge, information, awareness or any skill. They are
moulded for any trade by the society or by self-effort so as to suit to the requirements needed for the job to be performed
safely and efficiently; or for suiting to any situation or exposure with safe and healthy conduct.
Behaviour (tangible that a person does) plays a major role, in deciding how a person acts in a particular situation. Proper
awareness and training are the key factors towards safe human response. The same rationale applies to healthy living and
health promotion. For a life worth living safety and health becomes the landmark.
A-B-C (Attitude – Behaviour – Consequences) series, describes the conduct pattern of a person. Attitude is the driving force
guiding our behaviour that results in good or bad outcome. For attaining safe performance, one has to adopt safe way of
working. Similarly, for maintaining good health, adoption of healthy way of living and working are required to be adopted.
5. What is Safety:
It is the condition of being safe from undergoing or causing hurt, injury, or loss.
Safety can also refer to the control of recognized hazards in order to achieve an acceptable
level of risk.
A safe and healthy workplace not only protects workers from injury and illness, it can
also lower injury/illness costs, reduce absenteeism and turnover, increase productivity
and quality, and raise employee morale. In other words, safety is good for business.
It's necessary to remember Safety1st because it can ultimately save lives!
For example, it also applies in the workplace, where safety must
always come before production. If we were not safe, then there
would have been many accidents and possible fatalities at work.
6. 3 Distinct elements of Safety:
1. Human Attributes : A quality, character, or characteristic ascribed to someone or something,
qualities include honesty, integrity, courage, self-awareness.
Human behaviour causes most accidents:
Comfort
Saving Time
Convenience
Lack of understanding and training
Wrong safety focus
7. 3 Distinct elements of Safety:
2. Work Environment: A work environment free from injuries and accidents attracts employees. Employees are
more satisfied and productive in such an environment. A safe work environment is essential for both employees and
employers alike. It is the right of all employees to have safety in the workplace.
Take care of your eyes
Adjusting your work station
Take a break
Body movements
Ensure no unsafe condition near us
8. 3 Distinct elements of Safety:
3. Behaviour (What people do): Is a process that informs management and employees of the overall
safety of the workplace through safety observations.
Don’t ignore unsafe condition
Do not attracted negative behaviour
Emphasis on alertness;
• Planning;
• Hazard identification;
• Problem solving, and;
• Injury prevention
• Mock drill
• Safety audit
9. Near-miss:
A near-miss is a potential hazard or incident in which no property was damaged and no personal injury was
sustained, but where, given a slight shift in time or position, damage or injury easily could have occurred.
Near misses also may be referred to as close calls, near accidents, or injury-free events.
Near misses are golden opportunities to prevent future issues
We do a lot unsafe things & get away with it..
Does that make it OK?
Don’t ignore unsafe behaviour
Don’t be a part of building this!
11. Step to implement a behavioral safety:
Maximum work force to participate in Behaviour base safety training.
Establish schedules for observation of unsafe behaviour and intervention.
Study recent potential accident cases and near miss incidents to establish unsafe
behaviours responsible for those.
Identify a team of personnel from each work group and train them to provide feedback
on unsafe behaviour observation techniques.
Establish with each work group, a behaviour base safety improvement target.
Periodically brief the team of workforce and provide feedback
on the program, obtain their views, recommendations, and
opinions at regular intervals.
