North Korea has been developing nuclear weapons and long range technology since the early
1980's. North Korea has an unpredictable and erratic new leader, Kim Jung–un, the third since the
communist takeover of the Northern part of the Korean peninsula. The most likely outcome to the
question is that the Korean peninsula cannot become a nuclear free zone in the next five–years.
There are some options to attempt to combat and control the situation in North Korea. Including:
1. Move North Korea toward becoming a "productive member" of the international community.
2. More UN involvement.
3. Less of continuing cold war tactics between the US and China.
4. Continue to use economic sanctions on North Korea.
5. Punish the government more than the people.
6. Invading North Korea and liberating their people. (though not recommended)
While some of these options are highly unlikely to be implementable, some will help contain the
situation and maintain the status quo. They will keep the situation from escalating and at this point

North Korea has political system built upon the principle of socialism and centralization. Naturally,
the country has drawn attention of many economists as well as politicians. Among various issues
concerning North Korea, a topic of Korean reunification has long received economic consideration.
Many existing studies estimate economic impact of Korean integration to answer a key question: Is
Korean reunification worth pursuing? Some studies further extend the question to find the best way
of unifying Korea. Despite heading for the same goal, the studies primarily differ in their
methodologies.
Some studies evaluate the impact by comparing two Korean countries with other previously unified
countries such as Germany, Italy, and Vietnam (Blum, 2012; Rothacher, 2005; Wolf, 1998; Hwang,
2010). While each paper implements different economic models, the prediction is made through
accounting for the difference in pre–unification statistics. They disagree, however, on the
determinants of costs and benefits as well as the methodology. On the other hand, Wolf (2006) and
Ahrens (2003) look into different scenarios concerning Korean reunification process. Finally, Liu
and Noland (1998) construct a Computable General Equilibrium (CGE) model to describe the result
of Korean reunification.

The Korean peninsula has a unique political situation of being one of the few divided countries on
the globe. As a person growing up in the southern part of the peninsula, I had heard of North Korea
more than anyone can possibly imagine–I can't think of a single day when the TV news did not
mention the tension building up between North and South Korea. And among the barrage of
information about the North was how dreadful the living conditions of the North Koreans were. It
was a routine part of education, where I was taught that the North Korean government is a group of
people which does not care about the well–being of its citizens and that I am lucky to be living in
South Korea.
Before I understood the reality of the North Korea, when I was a young and immature kid who read
George Orwell's "1984", I thought that, while some of the news about the North could be true, there
must be some sort of exaggeration just to reinforce the negative feelings toward North Korea.
Especially when it comes to news about people's quality of life, I would brush the news aside,
thinking to myself that not all of the news stories could possibly be true.
But there were no exaggeration to it. The shocking revelation came to me when I worked at the
Korean Institute of Tuberculosis during the summer of 2012. My main job as a summer intern was
to translate an English version of Directly Observed Treatment guideline for tuberculosis from the
British Columbia Center of Disease Control into Korean.

The Founding Of Choson From The Korean Peninsula
In 1392 when Choson replaced Koryo from the Korean peninsula, many differences occurred. Since
Choson was successor of Koryo, Koryo could have been seen similar to its predecessor in a certain
extent, but Choson was a whole new country. Foreign relations, military, society, and religion had all
changed especially the religion. The founding of Choson can be interpreted as a religious revolution
because reform–minded Confucian scholars wanted to a change.
In Late Koryo, Buddhism had corrupted so much that even one of their own members wrote to fix a
decadence in their religion. Confucians scholars blamed the Buddhists' mismanagement to justify

The first is external: the challenge posed by its nuclear weapons program and the threat of
proliferation off the Korean Peninsula. The second is essentially but not wholly internal: the
challenge posed by the pending transfer of power in Pyongyang and potential for instability as the
process plays out. This complex reality underscores the need for balance and strategic patience if the
twin dangers of proliferation and instability on the peninsula are to be successfully managed. In
order to produce these changes in the policy, there must be a determination of the ends/ goals, ways
for achieving the goals, and means as the instruments and activities for implementing ways. The
history of the relationship between the United States and North Korea led up to today's policy of
dealing with North Korea through diplomatic channels. The U.S. helped to divide the Korean
peninsula at the end of World War II, and then waged war against North Korea in the 1950s.
Although the U.S. signed a peace agreement rather than a peace treaty with North Korea after the
war, its policy toward the country changed. Instead of trying to overthrow the North Korea
government, the U.S. government adopted a policy of containing communism. During the 1980's,

South Korea
South Korea has been growing increasingly popular as an alternative production base for overseas
manufacturers in the past years. Basic production industry's benefit in terms of cheaper price of
labor and land is now almost gone in South Korea. However niche regions are still available and
good skill labor, technology and reasonable expenses are expected in terms of our company's needs
that should make skillful and cheap technology labor.
Lying between the China and Japan, South Korea is located Korea Peninsula that is convenient
location of Far East Asia, which is good for trading due to close Pacific Ocean. Korea's land is not
so big, so this reason appropriate place to establish the factory is not difficult. South Korea's
manufacture industry complex is concentrated on near Seoul, which is the capital and near Busan,
which is the second city of Korea. Both city has big port and located near the ocean. For overseas
manufacturers with limited knowledge of doing business in South Korea, near the capital and
second city will probably be a safer bet as an alternative production base.

Currency exchange rate with Korea is favorable to US companies with 1 USD = 1,170 KRW as
compared to Germany's 1USD = 0.927EUR so there will not be a significant cost advantage if
manufacturing is set up in Germany.

The Movie ' The Warlords ' Essay
The several movies portrayed in this course were very helpful in understanding Asian history. In my
opinion, these movies were helpful in the way that they introduced the fundamental basic history
about how the wars shaped the outcome of Korea and China. These movies were helpful because
they provided an overall consideration of the different perspectives of the wars. In the movie The
Warlords, we gained knowledge about the Manchu government's perspective and in the movie The
Front Line, we gained knowledge from both the north's and south's Korea armies sides.
As Richard Bernstein said "movie makers and television producers have become our most powerful,
though perhaps not our most careful, historians." He stated that it was fair to say that society used to
think that they are getting history, or what they think is history, from the movies than from the
standard history books. However, he also confirmed that the actors have a great influence on the
production of the movie as well – "many of the latest history movies deal not with distant events but
with the central episodes and actors of our era." In addition, Bernstein contributed to his argument
that the artists could distort the facts of the history by pointing that the society grants the artists the
power to comment on both our past and our present. Thus, intentionally or not, the artists could

Synopsis of the Situation:
In this case, the female American consultant, Ellen Moore, is sent to South Korea as an expatriate
project management representative to work on a project between a North American company,
Western Systems Inc. (WSI) and a North Korean company, Korean Conglomerate Inc. (KCI). Even
though Ellen has had international experiences working in Bahrain and two other successful projects
in America, she still runs into issues. As an expatriate, Ellen supposes to have deep knowledge about

In North Korea, a society with the focus of masculinity, it is very hard for Ellen to fit in in a
leadership role. It is derived from the structure, culture, and value, according to the Hofstede's
cultural dimension theory. North Korea preserves the teaching values of Confuciusm, and one of
them is on the code of behavior between men and women, which leads to the major domination of

The Korean legend of Dan Gun begins with the "Lord of Heaven" who had a son, Hwan–ung, who
yearned to live on Earth. The legend states that the heaven and earth were one, and all animals could
communicate with humans and gods. Hwan–ung wanted earthly rule, so his father sent him to Earth
to gain his desire. When he went to Earth he met a tiger and a bear who "prayed" to become human.

Korea, located on the Korean Peninsula in North–East Asia, consists of two separate states – North
Korea and South Korea. What makes it a peninsula is the fact that it has the Yellow Sea on its
western coast, the East China Sea on it southern coast, and the Sea of Japan on its eastern coast. Its
neighbors, and only land access, are China to the northwest and Russia to the northeast. Occupying

Summer, characterized by its heavy rainfall, runs from July to mid–September. Average
temperatures fall between the 70s and mid–80s. Because of the amount of humidity, fog tends to be
prevalent most summer days, with the coastal line suffering the heavy doses. July and August see
the most rainfall, with an average of 15 inches per month. Weather hazards continue in the form of

Korea is facing a crisis with its forests since most have disappeared due to human structures and
