Relations Between The East And Japan
In general, people tend to discuss inter–country relations in monolithic terms. The main problem
with this that a nation does not have a monolithic view. Instead, it has a river of ideas flowing with
the current of political and individual movements. It is apparent that viewing US relations with
countries of the Pacific through monolithic terms fails to grasp the complexity of these relations.
The stereotypes or monolithic view of "the East" will be evaluated through analysis of the different
movements and the entities forcing these movements in China, the Korea's, and Japan. Thus
showing that it is impossible to understand a country solely through monolithic terms. For centuries,
"the Orient" or "the East" has been a place of wonder ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
A perspective is as unique as the individual. Are they American, Chinese, or something else? Are
they prosperous or poor? Do they agree with the government? Etc. One must realize of course that it
would be impossible to speak about relations through examining events as unrelated randomness of
the individual. Instead one must understand that generalization are acceptable and can under many
circumstances closely define the view of a nation. However, when speaking of US–China relations,
they must also understand that in many cases there are opposing views within a nation and thus
cannot be completely understood through monolithic terms. In many cases, the monolithic view that
a person holds, is based on a foreign countries government and not the movements within a country.
This can be seen when examining China's recent economic successes through growth of their GPD
and international business investments. A foreign person's monolithic view may not see that
underneath layers of profit lies a very unsettled low income population. They may fail to realize the
level of disproportion that has emerge in recent times in regards to wealth. This disproportion of
wealth affects the entire country through not only economic means, but social standings

Strategic Plan For The United States Military
The purpose of this whitepaper is to develop a strategic plan that addresses the challenge articulated
within the Air War College Warfighting Op Ed article, "U.S. Moves Missile Destroyers Near Korea
–– Seoul Raises Tone; Washington Points To Need to Avoid Unilateral Action." (Barnes, 2013) The
Op Ed article summarized the policy intentions of the U.S related actions around the Korean
Peninsula as North Korea increasing their provocative rhetoric and actions against its southern
neighbor – South Korea. This author believes that the underlining problem highlighted in the article
and ultimately the root cause of the crisis – North Korea's strategy to keep itself relevant while it

and Asian Pacific region. Therefore, according to JP 5–0, military planning begins with
identification of a recognized challenge that U.S. senior leaders (Commander–in–Chief, Secretary
Defense, Chairman of the Joints Chief) acknowledge and believe require a military response and/or
action. (M.G., 2011) Thus, with initiation now started and the central problem [e.g. North Korean
Provocations] identified from the Op Ed, we move to mission analysis to examine the current
environment and desired end state(s) that the U.S desires to achieve which are also aligned with our
National Security Strategy Objectives. Hence, within the next section, this author will take the key
inputs provided (e.g. Air War College exam scenario, test Op Ed) and other well–informed planning
factors as well as critical planning assumptions to begin the Mission Analysis.
Mission Analysis
To begin, we need to understand the current environment in which the military needs to operate (e.g.
Asian Pacific region), which is a vast and open area. In fact, PACOM, the Geographic Combatant
Command that has the charge to maintain and secure the area, covers more than half the world and
includes 36 nations and vast distances all across water. (Keating, 2008). Additionally, the region
continues to be an ongoing challenge for the U.S as it focuses on

The Korean War: The Development Of The Korean Peninsula
Considering the Peninsula's dark history, its development over the past fifty years is remarkable. The
peninsula, that was once a part of the Japanese Empire became the property of The Soviets and The
Americans after World War 2. The possession of this country between these two opposing world
forces only laid the foundation for further conflict. The Soviets believed in Communism and the
Americans lived by Capitalism, inevitable this cause a war, the Korean war. The Korean War was
short but bloody according to the History staff "Nearly 5 million people died," (History Staff.com).
Despite its mass casualties South Korea has emerged as one of the world most developed countries

Before capitalism and communism divided the peninsula, Koreans were under the Japanese dynastic
system as a result of colonization. After World War 2, Japan lost possession of the peninsula and it
became the property to The Soviets and America. After three years of war America occupied the
southern half of the region where it implemented democracy. Being under a democracy allowed the
South Korean to establish a system that uses three branches of government. Funk and Wagnall
(2016) highlights the three branches of the South Korean government, first there is the executive
branch which is the president, who is elected to serve a five–year term, then the legislatures which
consist of 300 members all of which serve for 4 years, and the judiciary, who serves in the highest
court in South Korea which is the Supreme court where jurisdiction over civil and criminal cases are
executed. Just like the United States the President is the Commander in Chief, however unlike the
United States where there it military is generated through an all–volunteer force, it is mandatory for
South Korean men to complete at least 21 months of service in the

Korean Culture : Asian Cultures
Korean Culture Insights Previous Knowledge of Korean Culture Asian cultures vary in a variety of
ways, not just when compared to western cultures, but also when compared amongst themselves.
The Angelo State University campus gets to sample what the culture in South Korea is actually like
due to the numerous exchange students. Through working as a Resident Assistant, opportunities to
learn bits and pieces of their culture consistently presented themselves. In W.S.'s (1969) research
depicts respect as the major factor of any, if not all, Korean relationships. This is due to the large
reliance of hierarchy taught and passed down generation after generation, and is commonly known
as 'saving face.' There are few limitations on the efforts and pressure to keep honor in their family
name, bringing little to no disrespect in any endeavors. So in times of hardship, it is common to see
students avoid eye contact and stare downwards as a sign of respect; this also relates to the feeling
that they are unworthy of making eye contact with the person in authority. Marginalization and
Stereotypical thoughts/Beliefs On another note, the Korean student population is always willing and
eager to socialize, cook, and partake in campus programming. It is obvious that many of the Korean
students often associate with other Korean students; this is most likely due to the difficulties of
adjusting to a new environment that greatly differs from their previous experiences. Sa, Seo, Nelson,

A Barbed Wire Piano Commemorates Korean Independence
A barbed wire piano commemorates Korean independence
The Korean Ministry of Unification has joined forces with Cheil Worldwide, the advertising arm of
Samsung, to unveil the strangely beautiful "Piano of Unification," a project which commemorates
Korea's 70th anniversary of liberation from Japanese occupation, and aims to enhance interest in the
national reunification of South and North Korea. The piano in question uses barbed wire pulled from
the inter–Korean border (a literal symbol of the nation's division) for its strings, and will be
exhibited and performed on in public at Seoul Museum of Art in central Seoul. All of the wires used
in the piano were taken from the border fence while some changes were made to one of the pianos
to allow it a greater range and sound accuracy.

After Korea's period under Japanese rule between 1910 and 1945, the Korean War broke out in 1950
and lasted for three years, resulting in the division of the Korean Peninsula, which unfortunately still
exists to this day. Tying in with the celebration of Liberation Day on August 15, the Piano of

Nuclear Proliferation and Tension on the Korean Peninsula
The US should unofficially help South Korea build nuclear missiles and place them at the North
Korean border. The US should treat them like they treat Israel's and pretend they don't exist. We will
send American engineers and workers over to South Korea to help build them and tell the public and
the world that it is to help build infrastructure. It will be revenue for American companies and
workers while simultaneously protecting South Korea. If the secret of South Korea having nuclear
weapons is exposed the US should say they have placed out own nuclear weapons at the border for
defensive purposes. America shouldn't admit that they have helped the South Koreans become
nuclear instead they should act as if they put American nuclear weapons on American bases in South
Korea. If Kim Jung Un mentions them turn the focus on his illegal weapons activity and threaten to
at the very least impose U.N. Security Council sanctions for their nuclear and missile tests. If North
Korea is no longer honoring the armistice South Korea shouldn't be required to either.
Like any plan there are possible downfalls to this. If the secret missiles become public knowledge
the American people might feel like the government was hiding things from them and that may
greatly impact the democrat's chances in the next election. Although voters haven't elected the same
political party for president three terms in a row since 1993 so going off this pattern the chances of
democrats wining the next

Buying The Ideal Face Of South Korea
Buying The Ideal Face With the reputation of having some of the most beautiful women in the
world, South Korea is also a country widely known for its excessive execution of plastic surgery
procedures. According to Zara Stone, based on data from a 2010 Survey by the International Society
of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons, she addresses that one out of every five women of all age groups in
South Korea undergoes some sort of surgery procedure, making South Korea the leading country of
plastic surgery (2). Plastic surgery is popular among many women in South Korea today because of
one reason, to escape the reality of being non–compliant with the cultural standard of beauty, which
is having small eyes, a flat nose, or a round face. Like many countries, women in South Korea solely
believe that beauty correlates with the way they physically look rather than the beauty that comes
within (Stone 3). Many South Korean women are unhappy with their appearance, especially when
they compare themselves to attractive models, celebrities, and westernized women who meet and
satisfy the standards of beauty portrayed by the media (Stone 2). But what is beauty, and what is it
that makes plastic surgery so widely accepted in South Korea? In order to be compliant to the
cultural beauty standard, South Korean women view plastic surgery as their definite solution to be
validated as a beautiful woman. Influenced by the idolization of having a westernized look
portrayed by media, South Korean women

North Korea International Relations: A Realistic...
The negotiations talking on the nuclear threaten and the denuclearization of the Korean peninsula
has recently shaped the agenda of North Korean system of international relations, thus affecting the
patterns of foreign policy of the DPRK. This issue has gained such a priority to lead to the
establishment of the 6PT experiment, thus proving to stand at the core of the debate on the stability
and safety debate in the Northeast Asia region.
The theory of Realism provides reasons why North Korea has positioned the nuclear weapon debate
at the centre of its policy. One of the fundamental assumptions of Realism is in fact that each state,
embedded in an international order characterized by a condition of antagonism, attempt to pursue its

Burdened by dramatic level of poverty, with a starving population, lacking resources, infrastructure
and capital for investments, isolated from international trade and limited in its military capability,
NK could only rely on the nuclear issue to enhance its national security level. The strategy has
proved successful to the extent that the country has for the first time entered, through the mechanism
of the 6PT, a system of multilateral negotiations. Despite the future of the 6PT being uncertain, the
nuclear issue enabled NK not only to survive and maintain its regime but also to bargain with the
parties involved, ensuring a tool for obtaining international aid and for potentially reducing the
burden of economic sanctions.
The approach of Neoclassical Realism identifies the distribution of power in the international
system as independent variable, the domestic perception of the system as intervening variable and
the subsequent foreign policy decision as dependent variable. Owing to the fact that, as mentioned
above, North Korea has no other resources to exploit than the nuclear to shape its foreign policy,
and, in addition to that, being aware of the subordinate position it has on the international stage
(from the perspective of economic and real military capability), it is here argued that its attempt to

Can the Korean Peninsula Become a Nuclear Free Zone
Who
Thomas Countryman, Assistant Sectary, Department of State, Bureau of International Security and
Nonproliferation (ISN)
Key Policy Question:
Can the Korean peninsula become a nuclear free zone?
Time Period:
5 years (2014–2019)
Executive Summary:
North Korea has been developing nuclear weapons and long range technology since the early
1980's. North Korea has an unpredictable and erratic new leader, Kim Jung–un, the third since the
communist takeover of the Northern part of the Korean peninsula. The most likely outcome to the
question is that the Korean peninsula cannot become a nuclear free zone in the next five–years.
There are some options to attempt to combat and control the situation in North Korea. Including:
1. Move North Korea toward becoming a "productive member" of the international community.
2. More UN involvement.
3. Less of continuing cold war tactics between the US and China.
4. Continue to use economic sanctions on North Korea.
5. Punish the government more than the people.
6. Invading North Korea and liberating their people. (though not recommended)
While some of these options are highly unlikely to be implementable, some will help contain the
situation and maintain the status quo. They will keep the situation from escalating and at this point
that is the best we can hope for, but no nuclear weapons in the next 5 years is highly unlikely.
Assumptions:
First, Kim Jung–un's leadership will continue to be erratic and unpredictable (Mievsky, Huffington

A Plan For a Complete Intelligence Collection Operation...
The Korean peninsula has been a volatile area since the end of World War II. Today it is the last
example of a single nation divided between two states, represents the longest division of ideologies,
and is the archetype of enduring Cold War symptoms. Although small in size, The Democratic
People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) has been the biggest obstacle to regional stability in Asia, its
militant and hostile policies posing a threat not only to western aligned nations, but also to its former
and present benefactors, Russia and China. This dangerous country represents a very important
target for the United States' Intelligence Community, an extremely difficult one to exploit, but one
that cannot be ignored as North Korea's ambitions ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In this assignment I will outline a design for an Intelligence Collection Operation against North
Korea, with special emphasis on the country's nuclear program, listing each of the collection
disciplines and crafts best suited for the task. The first and most logical step in intelligence
collection against North Korea and its nuclear program is to use our eyes in the sky. Geospatial
Intelligence (GEOINT) needs to be applied on a regular basis, to track terrain changes around all
presently known nuclear sites, and conduct analysis of potential new sites that may be used for this
purpose (e.g. a new research and or enrichment facility close to the country's uranium mines);
infrared imaging should be used accordingly in order to discover new differences in thermal
signatures around existing or potential sites, as this may provide information on new nuclear related
operations and indicate the need for new useful intelligence products gathering.
Equally important for finding the location of suspected nuclear sites, is an extensive use of Signals
Intelligence (SIGINT) collection. Although DPRK government and military personnel are well
trained in communications discipline, an unintentional protocol error by a lower level soldier or
guard could enable a language analyst to gather a useful piece of the intelligence puzzle. Other
Communications Intelligence (COMINT) uses are also

China won't come to North Korea's assistance in the event that it dispatches rockets debilitating U.S.

The Global Times daily paper is not an official mouthpiece of the Communist Party, but rather for
this situation its publication most likely reflects government approach and can be considered "semi–
official," specialists said.
China has just cautioned both Washington and Pyongyang not to do anything that raises pressures or

With the circumstance on the Korea Peninsula sliding perilously towards the final turning point,
Chinese media are beginning to proclaim their positions on any potential war, he said. "Besides, in a
half–official manner, China is beginning to audit and clear up the 1961 settlement."
China has turned out to be profoundly baffled with the administration in Pyongyang, and really
needs to see a denuclearized Korean Peninsula. However, it has dependably declined to do anything
that may destabilize or topple an administration which has for quite some time been both partner and
cushion state.
That is on the grounds that Beijing does not have any desire to see a brought together Korean state
unified to the United States up against its fringe: without a doubt, a huge number of Chinese
troopers kicked the bucket amid the 1950–53 Korean war to keep that occurrence.
So until further notice, the current uneasy the norm for China still appears to be superior to the
choices.
That is doubly valid in front of a critical Communist Party Congress in the fall, at which President
Xi Jinping needs to extend an air of steadiness and control as he plans to solidify his energy toward

Tension on the Korean Peninsula – South Korean Policy...
North Korea, formally known as the Democratic Peoples Republic of Korea (DPRK), is a relic of
the Cold War and the world's last remaining totalitarian Stalinist dictatorship. Arguably the most
secretive state in the world, North Korea poses a unique set of challenges to the world, especially to
its democratic and capitalist neighbor, South Korea, formally known as the Republic of Korea
(ROK). As one of the last remnants of the Cold War era, North Korea remains an anomaly of the
international system due to its unpredictable nature and disregard for international norms. With the
recent bombardment of the South Korean Island of Yeongpyong and the sinking of the warship
Cheonan, tensions between the two Koreas are at the lowest point since ... Show more content on

It should be noted that North Korea's communist ally and veto holder, the Soviet Union, was absent
from this meeting in protest of the communist China's exclusion from the Security Council. A
United Nations defense force led by the United States, came to the of South Korea and in a rapid
counter–offensive, they were able to push the North Koreans back past the 38th parallel close to
Yalu River along the border with China. Warnings from Communist China that it would intervene
should UN forces push past the 38th parallel were ignored by UN Commanders and true to their
word, the Chinese Intervened on behalf of the North pushing UN and ROK forces back to the 38th
parallel. In 1953, the war ended with an armistice that restored the border between the Koreas near
the 38th Parallel and created the Korean Demilitarized Zone, a 4 Km wide buffer zone between the
two Koreas (Edwards 2005).
Following the Korean War, South Korea entered a period of political turmoil as its president; Rhee
Syngman faced increased opposition to his authoritarian rule. In 1960, he was ousted from office
during a student uprising in response to allegations of vote rigging of the vice presidential elections.
A military coup immediately followed and prevented any hope for democracy from being initiated
as the authoritarian military leader Park Chung Hee seized power. Although Park was criticized for
his authoritarianism and dictatorial rule, his strong state–led developmental policies caused South

Yes and No in Korean Essay
Yes and No
After coming to America, I have suffered from the improper usage of "yes" and "no." I sometimes
confuse an affirmative response with a negative one because the usage of "yes" and "no" in Korean
is different from English. For example, if I am asked, "Haven't you had dinner yet?" and I have not
had dinner yet, then in Korean I usually say, "Yes, I haven't." But in English, I have to say, "No, I
haven't." This different usage of "yes" and "no" in Korean and in English sometimes causes
misunderstandings or even estrangements between my American friends and me.
Because of my misuse of "yes" and "no," I often find that my friends misunderstand me: They

the summer of 1989, my close friend was a dorm–mate, Mark. He was in his late twenties and had
gotten married about five years ago. One sultry weekend night, he brought his son and daughter into
the dorm. Playing with each other, his son and daughter made some noise while they were running

across Mark and his offspring in the doorway of the dorm. After we both said, "Hello," he
introduced his children to me.
"Nice to meet you. How old are you?" I asked his son.
"He is three years old," Mark replied on behalf of his son and asked me smiling, "Didn't they make
noise last night? Didn't it bother you?" Because I did not mind the noise at all, I clearly said "Yes!"
How stupid I appeared to be! The mild smile suddenly disappeared from his face, and he said, "I am

China 's Influence On The Reunification Of The Korean...
Has China's role been primarily positive or negative in the reunification of the Korean Peninsula? In
recent years, Asia has drawn plenty of attentions from the world, not only because of the rising great
power China but also the increasingly unpredictable and unsettled North Korea. Based on the past
history of German reunification in 1990 and enthusiasm for the reunification among citizens in both
South Korea and North Korea, it seems to be a consensus in the world that the Korean Peninsula
will eventually reunified. The remaining questions are when and how will the reunification take
place. With the potential regional hegemon China continues to grow and the United States has set its
pivot in Asia to restrain China's rising, there is no doubt that the reunification will greatly change the
power distribution in Asia. As the only country that has meaningful relationships with both South
Korea and North Korea, China is commonly viewed as the main facilitator in the reunification. As a
result, China's attitudes and policies towards both countries are crucial to this issue. China has
always been openly support the reunification of Korean Peninsula. However, on the other side,
China continues to support Kim family's authoritarian regime and prevents the regime from falling
apart. Although North Korea has become increasingly outrageous by ignoring China's advices and
drags China into unnecessary international conflicts, there is no clear sign that China is going to

The Cold War: The Ancient Korean Peninsula
The ancient Korean empire controlled the entire peninsula for thousands of years, until 1910, when
the more dominant and capable Japanese army invaded and attained authority over the isle through a
signed treaty. The leadership of Korea remained in the hands of Japan until they were defeated by
the US in World War Two. As Korea emerged from four decades of brutal Japanese rule, the
peninsula was then split halfway between the Soviet Union (who dominated the north) and the US
(who had controlled the south) in 1948. This divide between territories was mainly a product of the
Cold War and both nations sought to gain territory in order to prevail. The Soviets appointed a man

This re–energized South Korean side then counterattacked in October 1950, and this resulted in the
North Koreans retreating as far back as the Yalu River; this meant that the South had occupied over
four–fifths of the entire area of the peninsula. China discovered that North Korea was in a
predicament and could have been overrun by the south. It was evident that they were in desperate
need of assistance and this would help China achieve revenge against their former enemy, Japan,
and gain assistance from the North in the then occurring Chinese Civil War. This was when China's
dictator, Chairman Mao, took advantage of the situation, and aided the struggling northern army
with more than one million soldiers. With now about 2.5 million soldiers fighting on each side, the
battlefield became congested, and the warfare evolved into trench battles. A ceasefire was reached in
1953, but since there was no officially signed peace treaty, the north and south technically remain at
war even to this day. This was the Korean War, which split the north and south, and resulted in the

Should Andersen separate Lundbeck Korea from Lundbeck Asia? Why or why not?
Analyzing the Lundbeck case and considering the theoretical readings provided, one can conclude
that Andersen should not separate Lundbeck Korea from Lundbeck Asia. Although the Korean
pharmaceutical market has its own culture and aggressively grows, Lundbeck Korea is still a very
small percentage of Lundbeck's corporation revenues. The Asian division can also provide better
support to the South Korean unit than the company headquarters if the organizational process and
communication between them become better structured. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
According to the case, they have successfully adapted to the local market. This capability should be
leveraged and potentially also used for other company projects, such as Japan. Anderson should
keep the South Korean subsidiary responding to the Asian VP, but review the regional strategy and
communication process. A subsidiary cannot completely escape company rules as the company
definitely needs to be consistent worldwide, but local adaptation is also necessary. Consequently, the
Asian VP and the Korean CEO will need to find a middle ground that contemplates Lundbeck's
strategic drivers and the successful Korean case.

The Korean Peninsula
A little bit less than five years after World War 2 ended, a crisis broke out on the Korean Peninsula.
The Korean Peninsula had been divided after war. The two halves became separate nations–
communist North Korea, and noncommunist, capitalist South
Korea. (Resource #1) It was divided at latitude 38 degrees north, also known as the 38th parallel.
(Resource #2)
In June 1950, North Korean troops stormed south and seized the South Korean capital of Seoul
(sohl). Originally, North Koreas goal was to bring South Korea under communism by force. They no
longer wanted to be separate. North Korea wanted to be united with South Korea. (Resource #1)

Troops were rushed in by the UN. That was commanded by the United States to help South Korea.
The UN force, known as the
Eighth Army, had superior air and naval power. Even though the UN had that, the North
Koreans had better weapons on the ground and more soldiers. The North Korean soldiers were more
experienced. For seven weeks, KPA forces pushed the Republic of
Korea (ROK) Army and UN forces toward the coast. (Resource #3)
By December 1950, the Eighth Army had retreated across the 38th parallel and reassembled in
Seoul. The Chinese lined up north of that position, preparing to attack.
Even though they lost many soldiers, the UN forces numbered almost 300,000 and were still a
match for the enemy. (Resource #4)
The UN and the United States had no plans to give up on South Korea. Their plan was to hold a line
of Seoul, close to the 38th parallel or as far north as possible.
They would do this until the Chinese and North Korea were willing to negotiate a peace agreement.
For South Korea, the UN, and the United States, it seemed terrifying to hold a line against the
seemingly numberless Chinese. The Chinese struck the UN line

Economic Impact Of Korean Reunification
North Korea has political system built upon the principle of socialism and centralization. Naturally,
the country has drawn attention of many economists as well as politicians. Among various issues
concerning North Korea, a topic of Korean reunification has long received economic consideration.
Many existing studies estimate economic impact of Korean integration to answer a key question: Is
Korean reunification worth pursuing? Some studies further extend the question to find the best way
of unifying Korea. Despite heading for the same goal, the studies primarily differ in their
methodologies.
Some studies evaluate the impact by comparing two Korean countries with other previously unified

Analysis Of George Orwell 's ' 1984 '
The Korean peninsula has a unique political situation of being one of the few divided countries on
the globe. As a person growing up in the southern part of the peninsula, I had heard of North Korea
more than anyone can possibly imagine–I can't think of a single day when the TV news did not
mention the tension building up between North and South Korea. And among the barrage of
information about the North was how dreadful the living conditions of the North Koreans were. It
was a routine part of education, where I was taught that the North Korean government is a group of
people which does not care about the well–being of its citizens and that I am lucky to be living in
South Korea.
Before I understood the reality of the North Korea, when I was a young and immature kid who read
George Orwell's "1984", I thought that, while some of the news about the North could be true, there
must be some sort of exaggeration just to reinforce the negative feelings toward North Korea.
Especially when it comes to news about people's quality of life, I would brush the news aside,
thinking to myself that not all of the news stories could possibly be true.
But there were no exaggeration to it. The shocking revelation came to me when I worked at the
Korean Institute of Tuberculosis during the summer of 2012. My main job as a summer intern was
to translate an English version of Directly Observed Treatment guideline for tuberculosis from the
British Columbia Center of Disease Control into Korean.

Japan 's Influence On Japanese Culture
My assign project is in the country of Korea. Korea has had an enormous amount of influence on
Japanese culture. It all originated in the Korean Peninsula where Korea was ruled by Japan.
Japanese Empire annex the Korean Empire in 1910 for over thirty–five years. Since, the ruling
Korea has influenced Japanese's culture, art, philosophy, and history. During the thirty–five years of
ruling Japan surrender and the United Nations ordered to split Korea at the 38th parallel. The Soviet

History and outside influence also had an impact on Korean food. During the 20th century, China
was the most powerful and advanced country in East Asia. Because of this, China has been
influencing its neighboring Asian countries like their government, culture, and food. One the most
influential items that were passed down by China is rice. Rice has now been one of the most major
grain crops in Korea. Furthermore, Korea is mostly surrounded by water, fishing has been a huge
part of Korea's economy and that seafood has been favored by many Koreans for generations.
Weather is also the influential factors of Korean dish. Fermented dishes such as kimchi is a Korean
cuisine that is traditional side dish made from salted and fermented vegetables such as cabbage and
radishes. Doenjang or soybean paste is a fermented bean paste made from soybean and brine. These
two dishes are very popular because people enjoyed them throughout the freezing climates.
The main belief in South Korea is Buddhism. According to 2005 study about the statistic, Korea of
religious groups 43% are Buddhism, 34.5% are Protestantism, 20.6% are Roman Catholic and 1.9%
considered themselves as 'others' including Confucianism, Won Buddhism, Jeungsangyo,

The Founding Of Choson From The Korean Peninsula
In 1392 when Choson replaced Koryo from the Korean peninsula, many differences occurred. Since
Choson was successor of Koryo, Koryo could have been seen similar to its predecessor in a certain
extent, but Choson was a whole new country. Foreign relations, military, society, and religion had all
changed especially the religion. The founding of Choson can be interpreted as a religious revolution
because reform–minded Confucian scholars wanted to a change.
In Late Koryo, Buddhism had corrupted so much that even one of their own members wrote to fix a
decadence in their religion. Confucians scholars blamed the Buddhists' mismanagement to justify
their action of building a new dynasty . The shift of a state from Buddhism to Neo–Confucianism
with the transition from Koryo to Choson is well–known, but it needs to be broken down into pieces
to observe the changes that occurred. Religious status of late Koryo, religious status of Choson, and
impact of changes politically and socially must be carefully observed and will be described in more
detail below.
Religious Status of Late Koryo
Buddhism was first introduced to Korean peninsula during the Three Kingdoms period by the
foreign monks. By the time of Late Silla, Buddhism had become integral part of the culture and was
a state religion of Koryo. Due to people of Koryo choosing to endow temples in concern of
operations of the temples, Buddhist establishment obtained large landholdings and an accumulated
wealth.

The Effects Of Tension In South Korea
Tension on the Korean Peninsula is almost tangible due to the North Korean threats of nuclear war.
Additionally, many in South Korea reportedly lament the state of socioeconomic inequality in the
country, a broad assortment of barriers. With all these and other pressures on Koreans today, citizens
have been finding innovative ways to channel their frustration and relieve some of their stress. It's
called the Seoul Rage Room, and it's a place people come simply to smash mostly household items
with other household items.
Customers at Seoul Rage Room wear protective gear, and that usually means a plastic poncho of
sorts with a safety helmet. They occasionally or, perhaps, upon request provide earplugs as well. The

"I feel refreshed after breaking the ceramics and bashing things up." This continually draws on data
from a 2015 study conducted by the Neuro–Psychiatric Association. It found that nearly half of

need of professional therapy. The youth in South Korea are actually every bit the poster boys and
girls that the elders are according to the Korea Health Promotion Institute who reported that twice as
many Korean students are discontent with life as what the OECD average indicates.
To some degree, it's partly attributable to ongoing tensions with North Korea. On Jan. 6, 2018, in

Informative Speech About North Korean
Did you know that in North Korea, the punishment for questioning the political system there is
having three generations of your family killed? Or that if you watch a Hollywood movie there, you
will be killed? These laws only show us the depth of the huge human crisis that is happening in this
country. North Korea is a terrible country for living. Most of its population suffer tremendously, and
they wish that they could be helped. They are right to wish for help, and we can clearly see this with
two main points that seriously affect citizens' lives; nonsense laws, and a severe military style
punishment system. But, there is hope. We are the ones who are able to help North Koreans, with a
strong awareness how to this could happen. Hi, I'm Alessandro and today I am going to show you
why and how to help North Koreans

to die too! This is unreal, how can you kill a person for something that he or she didn't even do?
Another fact that shows this country's strictness is that if you sleep at work, you will be executed. It
is not right to sleep at work, but sometimes you have spent all night awake, working on things at

in South Korea, Japan, and the United States thought was necessary. Among several shortcomings, it
fails directly to address the uranium enrichment and nuclear transfer issues, requires mutual consent
for inspection of undeclared sites, and most significantly glosses over the issue of nuclear bombs
that North Korea is supposed to possess. As such, South Korea reluctantly accepted the agreement;
Japan reacted negatively toward it; and China was the only country that probably genuinely

Demand Conditions The demand conditions in South Korea have been unparalleled in other
countries in recent history. In 1963, the per capita Gross National Product (GNP) was $100. This has
grown to $20,000 per capita and South Korea is now the seventh largest trading partner with the
United States (Background Note: South Korea, 2008). This growth in GNP is staggering considering
that it took the United States 130 years to grow its Gross Domestic Product ten fold (1870–200)
(Barro, 2003). Barro (2003) notes that this growth is "fairly" evenly distributed. This distribution of
income has remained relatively unchanged from 1960 to today (Barro, 2003). Life expectancy and
infant mortality indicators have also significantly changed. Life expectancy has increased from 54
years to 73 years and infant mortality has dropped from 8% to 0.8% since 1960 (Barro, 2003). This
rapid growth and increase in personal income has led to a significant growth in internal demand for

tension along the line is palpable, and neither side is willing to acquiesce to the desires of its former
people. Before the invasions of Japan and subsequent Korean War involvement of China, this now

North Korea ( Nk )

North Korea (nK), bordering the Republic of Korea (ROK), also known as South Korea to the south
and China to the north , maintains a standing army of over million soldiers , a large special
operations force , and a sizable missile force . At the strategic level, maintaining situational
awareness of North Korea's activities is paramount to countering an all–out attack on South Korea.
Consider the following scenario in which nK would gear up for an attack on South Korea. In this
scenario, after a successful long range missile test, nK leadership has stepped up its anti US/ROK
alliance rhetoric. The nK economy is bottoming out, the World Food Aid program lessens its aid to

This collection matrix shows the three Priority Intelligence Requirements (PIR) as well as indicators
and the intelligence collection disciplines used to collect information. Three possible PIRs from a
strategic perspective are:
1) How will nK Special Operations Forces infiltrate into the ROK?
2) What avenue of approach will nK forces use to seize Seoul?
3) How will nK employ chemical weapons?
Infiltration of North Korean (nK) Special Forces will inhibit reinforcements as they could target
lines of communication in rear areas which will likely disrupt northward movement. Seizing Seoul
is likely the first objective for any North Korean advance as Seoul houses the government of the
ROK as well as a large portion of the population. nK has an active WMD program to include
chemical weapons. nK chemical arsenal could likely make up for shortfalls in conventional force
training, equipment, and supplies. These intelligence requirements, if answered, will give decision
points on how to counter the nK Threat. The collection matrix below shows the relationship between
PIRs, indicators, and intelligence collection disciplines. PIR 1 deals with nK Special Operations

South Kore A Dramatic Change Of Multiculturalism
South Korea has faced a dramatic change of multiculturalism brought by globalization. An influx of
different races and ethnicities from all over the world has changed dynamics of race and ethnicity in
South Korea. From nation–state with homogenous ethnicity, South Korea is now transforming into
racially, ethnically diversified society. According to Korea government, as of 2015, the number of
foreign residents in South Korea exceeded 1.5 million, which means three out of one hundred in
population of Korean are foreigners. Particularly, the number of immigrant workers from China and
South–East Asia (Indonesia, the Philippines, India, Nepal, etc.) is increasing due to economic
development of South Korea, supplying cheap labor to the labor–starved service industry (Seol &
Skrentny, 2009).
As multiculturalism is celebrated by the government (Yim, 2002), the media industry in South
Korea captures this cultural phenomenon by showing racial diversity. For instances, several
educational TV programs – e.g., Non–Summit (JTBC, 2014 – ), Global Talk Show (KBS, 2006–
2010), Love in Asia (KBS, 2005 – ) – invite foreigners who currently live in South Korea in the
show discussions for the purpose of reducing prejudices to different culture and achieving
multiculturalism. On the contrary to an increase in foreign images in these shows, racial diversity is
hardly found in soap opera. Considering unique characteristics of soap opera genre that constructs

Korean Culture Vs American Culture
The Korean culture is primarily based on a shared heritage that has existed since the 2333 AD in the
Korean Peninsula. The culture is therefore shaped by the traditional and the ancients events in
history that contributed to the development of the Republic of Korea (Moran 5–10). The entire
history and culture of Korea are based on Confucianism, which is based on the reflection of the
inner peace and the principle of respect determined by age and title of an individual (Kim 365–372).
On the other hand, the American culture is driven by the development of popular culture which has

The Korean culture consists of using the traditional musical instruments which are only understood
within the Asian borders (Lee 117–133). Not until recently did the Korean musical industry start

38th Parallel: A Brief History Of The Korean Peninsula
The Korean peninsula extends about 1,100 km from the southern part of the Asian mainland and
South Korea occupies the southern portion with a total area of about 99,000 square kilometers (Soh,
n.d.). Although most of this area is mountainous and sparsely populated, approximately 30% of the
total land area of South Korea is flat enough for agricultural and urban development. Located in the
northwestern part of the country, Seoul, the capital of South Korea, is a metropolis home to more
than ten million residents. Seoul is a city full of culture and history as Soh (n.d.) states "The palaces,
shrines, and other vestiges of the Choson Dynasty are still prominent features of the city north of the
Han River, serving as major tourist attractions". There are four general regions in South Korea: the
broad basin of the Nakdong River dominates the southeast; the southwest has mountains and
valleys; the west has coastal plains, river basins, and rolling hills; and the east has high mountain
ranges and narrow coastal plains (Geography and climate, 2012). The Yellow Sea and the East
China Sea border the western and southern coasts, respectively, and contain about three thousand
islands which are mostly small and uninhabited. At the end of World War II, the United States of

The South Korean Culture
The History and Culture of South Korea
Culture is a system of shared beliefs, values, customs, behaviors, and artifacts that members of a
society use to cope with their world and with one another. South Korea is influenced by the
philosophical brilliance of Confucius, they believe in family, community and society, unlike western
ideology of individualism. Customs are a very big part of their culture when comes to
communicating, dinning or even when purchasing items from a store. Because of their unique
culture, ever since the country was established is has grown tremendously and continues to grow.
South Korea has overcome a variety of difficulties such as military conflicts and economic issues.
Even after the continuing issues occurring on the Korean peninsula they have managed to stay
strong and are becoming a very independent nation.
There are a few different beliefs in the county when it comes to religion and their values. Most of
the population is Buddhists, as a result, there are many temples scattered all over the country. The
other big portion of the Korean population is Christian, which makes the country have the highest
percentage of Christians in East Asian or Southeast Asia, with the exception of the Philippines.
Given the great diversity of religious expression, the role of religion in South Korea's social
development has become somewhat complex. Korean beliefs have also influenced the different

The first is external: the challenge posed by its nuclear weapons program and the threat of
proliferation off the Korean Peninsula. The second is essentially but not wholly internal: the
challenge posed by the pending transfer of power in Pyongyang and potential for instability as the
process plays out. This complex reality underscores the need for balance and strategic patience if the
twin dangers of proliferation and instability on the peninsula are to be successfully managed. In
order to produce these changes in the policy, there must be a determination of the ends/ goals, ways
for achieving the goals, and means as the instruments and activities for implementing ways. The
history of the relationship between the United States and North Korea led up to today's policy of
dealing with North Korea through diplomatic channels. The U.S. helped to divide the Korean
peninsula at the end of World War II, and then waged war against North Korea in the 1950s.
Although the U.S. signed a peace agreement rather than a peace treaty with North Korea after the
war, its policy toward the country changed. Instead of trying to overthrow the North Korea
government, the U.S. government adopted a policy of containing communism. During the 1980's,
associations between North Korea and the U.S. start to take on a new diplomatic form. North

South Korea has been growing increasingly popular as an alternative production base for overseas
manufacturers in the past years. Basic production industry's benefit in terms of cheaper price of
labor and land is now almost gone in South Korea. However niche regions are still available and
good skill labor, technology and reasonable expenses are expected in terms of our company's needs
that should make skillful and cheap technology labor.
Lying between the China and Japan, South Korea is located Korea Peninsula that is convenient
location of Far East Asia, which is good for trading due to close Pacific Ocean. Korea's land is not
so big, so this reason appropriate place to establish the factory is not difficult. South Korea's
manufacture industry complex is concentrated on near Seoul, which is the capital and near Busan,
which is the second city of Korea. Both city has big port and located near the ocean. For overseas
manufacturers with limited knowledge of doing business in South Korea, near the capital and

The Movie ' The Warlords ' Essay
The several movies portrayed in this course were very helpful in understanding Asian history. In my
opinion, these movies were helpful in the way that they introduced the fundamental basic history
about how the wars shaped the outcome of Korea and China. These movies were helpful because
they provided an overall consideration of the different perspectives of the wars. In the movie The
Warlords, we gained knowledge about the Manchu government's perspective and in the movie The
Front Line, we gained knowledge from both the north's and south's Korea armies sides.
As Richard Bernstein said "movie makers and television producers have become our most powerful,
though perhaps not our most careful, historians." He stated that it was fair to say that society used to
think that they are getting history, or what they think is history, from the movies than from the
standard history books. However, he also confirmed that the actors have a great influence on the
production of the movie as well – "many of the latest history movies deal not with distant events but
with the central episodes and actors of our era." In addition, Bernstein contributed to his argument
that the artists could distort the facts of the history by pointing that the society grants the artists the
power to comment on both our past and our present. Thus, intentionally or not, the artists could
betray the history presented to the public by commenting their personal's opinions.

In North Korea, a society with the focus of masculinity, it is very hard for Ellen to fit in in a
leadership role. It is derived from the structure, culture, and value, according to the Hofstede's
cultural dimension theory. North Korea preserves the teaching values of Confuciusm, and one of
them is on the code of behavior between men and women, which leads to the major domination of
North Korea public and business life by men. With that being said, Jack is favored for both the
gender inequality, and the material success over Ellen easily by the Koreans.
Low Communication:
Ellen is not able to communicate in Korean fluently regardless how hard she tries. And many
Koreans do not speak English outside of the urban areas. Language has surely held her down in
terms of her credentials and credibility among the Korean workers. The deficient communication

According to the Trompennaar's culture theory, North Korea is very consistent with universalism,
communitarianism, neutral, diffuse, and achieve kind of human relationships. With such culture of
North Korea, it is one of the factors that makes the Koreans stick together and favor on Jack's side,

The Korean Legend of Dan Goon
The Korean Legend of Dan Gun
The Korean legend of Dan Gun begins with the "Lord of Heaven" who had a son, Hwan–ung, who
yearned to live on Earth. The legend states that the heaven and earth were one, and all animals could
communicate with humans and gods. Hwan–ung wanted earthly rule, so his father sent him to Earth
to gain his desire. When he went to Earth he met a tiger and a bear who "prayed" to become human.
Hwan–ung proposed a test, which if completed would make the contestant a human. The tiger and
bear were given wormwood and twenty cloves of garlic and told to stay out of the sunshine for 100
days.
The tiger could not endure and in the end the bear was able to complete the task, and after 100 days,
became a human but the woman ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In addition, according to Confucian standards, only people of the same gender could witness a
death. This means that a husband was not able to witness or be present at the death of his wife. It has
also been a custom that those who were present before a relative died were to wail and mourn, as an
expression of guilt that their lack of piety was the reason the person died.
Funeral Rituals:
When preparing the deceased's body the nails were clipped neatly and the body washed and the hair
was cleaned and combed. Both money and three spoonful's of rice were placed in the deceased's
mouth, as this would assure the deceased person's journey to the next world would be made easier.
Then the body was dressed in a special outfit. The hands and feet were tied and the body was
wrapped and placed in the coffin and the coffin was sealed and a shrine was set up in the deceased's
house.
Social Structures:
In Korea it is widely accepted that men run the heavy industry and women work in light industry.
Beyond this, the division is highly diverse. For example, agriculture is not necessarily regarded
specifically as a man's or woman's job. The women do most of the housework and look after any
children they may have, while working as many hours as men do outside of the home.
Sacred Symbols:
The most common symbols in Korea would be the cross for the faith Christianity and the wheel is
the symbol for

The Physical Environment of the Korean Peninsula
Korea, located on the Korean Peninsula in North–East Asia, consists of two separate states – North
Korea and South Korea. What makes it a peninsula is the fact that it has the Yellow Sea on its
western coast, the East China Sea on it southern coast, and the Sea of Japan on its eastern coast. Its
neighbors, and only land access, are China to the northwest and Russia to the northeast. Occupying
a land mass of over 84,000 square miles, Korea has a mixture of plains, mountains, and coastlines.
The combination of such varied geography provides many elements to consider when analyzing
Korea's physical environment. This essay will seek to provide a general understanding of the
geography, climatology, and biogeography of the components that make ... Show more content on

Summer, characterized by its heavy rainfall, runs from July to mid–September. Average
temperatures fall between the 70s and mid–80s. Because of the amount of humidity, fog tends to be
prevalent most summer days, with the coastal line suffering the heavy doses. July and August see
the most rainfall, with an average of 15 inches per month. Weather hazards continue in the form of
thunderstorms and the occasional monsoon.
Autumn, which falls between September and November, has average temperatures ranging from the
50s to the 60s. Clear skies and less rain make for better visibility during the fall. No major hazards
exist during this season.
Looking at the weather from a military perspective, it is easy to conclude that rotary wing assets will
confront problems with low visibility coupled with heavy precipitation. The low temperatures
combined with the high altitudes can make ground movement challenging during the winter months.
The quick transition from summer to winter can also cause acclimatization issues to ground troops
new to the area.
Biogeography
Korea is facing a crisis with its forests since most have disappeared due to human structures and
agricultural fields. Among the few forests that exist, there is the Southern Korea Evergreen Forest
that occupies the southernmost portion of the peninsula. Toward the center of Korea, in the more
moderate area, is the Central Korea Deciduous Forest. In the northern part of

Relations Between The East And Japan

  • 1. Relations Between The East And Japan In general, people tend to discuss inter–country relations in monolithic terms. The main problem with this that a nation does not have a monolithic view. Instead, it has a river of ideas flowing with the current of political and individual movements. It is apparent that viewing US relations with countries of the Pacific through monolithic terms fails to grasp the complexity of these relations. The stereotypes or monolithic view of "the East" will be evaluated through analysis of the different movements and the entities forcing these movements in China, the Korea's, and Japan. Thus showing that it is impossible to understand a country solely through monolithic terms. For centuries, "the Orient" or "the East" has been a place of wonder ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... A perspective is as unique as the individual. Are they American, Chinese, or something else? Are they prosperous or poor? Do they agree with the government? Etc. One must realize of course that it would be impossible to speak about relations through examining events as unrelated randomness of the individual. Instead one must understand that generalization are acceptable and can under many circumstances closely define the view of a nation. However, when speaking of US–China relations, they must also understand that in many cases there are opposing views within a nation and thus cannot be completely understood through monolithic terms. In many cases, the monolithic view that a person holds, is based on a foreign countries government and not the movements within a country. This can be seen when examining China's recent economic successes through growth of their GPD and international business investments. A foreign person's monolithic view may not see that underneath layers of profit lies a very unsettled low income population. They may fail to realize the level of disproportion that has emerge in recent times in regards to wealth. This disproportion of wealth affects the entire country through not only economic means, but social standings ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Strategic Plan For The United States Military The purpose of this whitepaper is to develop a strategic plan that addresses the challenge articulated within the Air War College Warfighting Op Ed article, "U.S. Moves Missile Destroyers Near Korea –– Seoul Raises Tone; Washington Points To Need to Avoid Unilateral Action." (Barnes, 2013) The Op Ed article summarized the policy intentions of the U.S related actions around the Korean Peninsula as North Korea increasing their provocative rhetoric and actions against its southern neighbor – South Korea. This author believes that the underlining problem highlighted in the article and ultimately the root cause of the crisis – North Korea's strategy to keep itself relevant while it develops a Nuclear Deterrent. Within this paper, This ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... and Asian Pacific region. Therefore, according to JP 5–0, military planning begins with identification of a recognized challenge that U.S. senior leaders (Commander–in–Chief, Secretary Defense, Chairman of the Joints Chief) acknowledge and believe require a military response and/or action. (M.G., 2011) Thus, with initiation now started and the central problem [e.g. North Korean Provocations] identified from the Op Ed, we move to mission analysis to examine the current environment and desired end state(s) that the U.S desires to achieve which are also aligned with our National Security Strategy Objectives. Hence, within the next section, this author will take the key inputs provided (e.g. Air War College exam scenario, test Op Ed) and other well–informed planning factors as well as critical planning assumptions to begin the Mission Analysis. Mission Analysis To begin, we need to understand the current environment in which the military needs to operate (e.g. Asian Pacific region), which is a vast and open area. In fact, PACOM, the Geographic Combatant Command that has the charge to maintain and secure the area, covers more than half the world and includes 36 nations and vast distances all across water. • 5. The Korean War: The Development Of The Korean Peninsula Considering the Peninsula's dark history, its development over the past fifty years is remarkable. The peninsula, that was once a part of the Japanese Empire became the property of The Soviets and The Americans after World War 2. The possession of this country between these two opposing world forces only laid the foundation for further conflict. The Soviets believed in Communism and the Americans lived by Capitalism, inevitable this cause a war, the Korean war. The Korean War was short but bloody according to the History staff "Nearly 5 million people died," (History Staff.com). Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Before capitalism and communism divided the peninsula, Koreans were under the Japanese dynastic system as a result of colonization. After World War 2, Japan lost possession of the peninsula and it became the property to The Soviets and America. After three years of war America occupied the southern half of the region where it implemented democracy. Being under a democracy allowed the South Korean to establish a system that uses three branches of government. Funk and Wagnall (2016) highlights the three branches of the South Korean government, first there is the executive branch which is the president, who is elected to serve a five–year term, then the legislatures which consist of 300 members all of which serve for 4 years, and the judiciary, who serves in the highest court in South Korea which is the Supreme court where jurisdiction over civil and criminal cases are executed. Just like the United States the President is the Commander in Chief, however unlike the United States where there it military is generated through an all–volunteer force, it is mandatory for South Korean men to complete at least 21 months of service in the ... • 7. Korean Culture : Asian Cultures Korean Culture Insights Previous Knowledge of Korean Culture Asian cultures vary in a variety of ways, not just when compared to western cultures, but also when compared amongst themselves. The Angelo State University campus gets to sample what the culture in South Korea is actually like due to the numerous exchange students. Through working as a Resident Assistant, opportunities to learn bits and pieces of their culture consistently presented themselves. In W.S.'s (1969) research depicts respect as the major factor of any, if not all, Korean relationships. This is due to the large reliance of hierarchy taught and passed down generation after generation, and is commonly known as 'saving face.' There are few limitations on the efforts and pressure to keep honor in their family name, bringing little to no disrespect in any endeavors. So in times of hardship, it is common to see students avoid eye contact and stare downwards as a sign of respect; this also relates to the feeling that they are unworthy of making eye contact with the person in authority. Marginalization and Stereotypical thoughts/Beliefs On another note, the Korean student population is always willing and eager to socialize, cook, and partake in campus programming. It is obvious that many of the Korean students often associate with other Korean students; this is most likely due to the difficulties of adjusting to a new environment that greatly differs from their previous experiences. • 9. A Barbed Wire Piano Commemorates Korean Independence A barbed wire piano commemorates Korean independence The Korean Ministry of Unification has joined forces with Cheil Worldwide, the advertising arm of Samsung, to unveil the strangely beautiful "Piano of Unification," a project which commemorates Korea's 70th anniversary of liberation from Japanese occupation, and aims to enhance interest in the national reunification of South and North Korea. The piano in question uses barbed wire pulled from the inter–Korean border (a literal symbol of the nation's division) for its strings, and will be exhibited and performed on in public at Seoul Museum of Art in central Seoul. All of the wires used in the piano were taken from the border fence while some changes were made to one of the pianos to allow it a greater range and sound accuracy. The Piano of Unification uses barbed wire pulled from the inter–Korean border (a literal symbol of the nation's division) for its strings After Korea's period under Japanese rule between 1910 and 1945, the Korean War broke out in 1950 and lasted for three years, resulting in the division of the Korean Peninsula, which unfortunately still exists to this day. Tying in with the celebration of Liberation Day on August 15, the Piano of Unification also encourages Koreans to give thought to the possibility of national reunification and peace. The piano will be showcased in the lobby of the Seoul Museum of Art from July 21 to September 29 as part of the "North Korea Project" exhibition. The museum will ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 11. Nuclear Proliferation and Tension on the Korean Peninsula The US should unofficially help South Korea build nuclear missiles and place them at the North Korean border. The US should treat them like they treat Israel's and pretend they don't exist. We will send American engineers and workers over to South Korea to help build them and tell the public and the world that it is to help build infrastructure. It will be revenue for American companies and workers while simultaneously protecting South Korea. If the secret of South Korea having nuclear weapons is exposed the US should say they have placed out own nuclear weapons at the border for defensive purposes. America shouldn't admit that they have helped the South Koreans become nuclear instead they should act as if they put American nuclear weapons on American bases in South Korea. If Kim Jung Un mentions them turn the focus on his illegal weapons activity and threaten to at the very least impose U.N. Security Council sanctions for their nuclear and missile tests. If North Korea is no longer honoring the armistice South Korea shouldn't be required to either. Like any plan there are possible downfalls to this. If the secret missiles become public knowledge the American people might feel like the government was hiding things from them and that may greatly impact the democrat's chances in the next election. Although voters haven't elected the same political party for president three terms in a row since 1993 so going off this pattern the chances of democrats wining the next ... • 13. Buying The Ideal Face Of South Korea Buying The Ideal Face With the reputation of having some of the most beautiful women in the world, South Korea is also a country widely known for its excessive execution of plastic surgery procedures. According to Zara Stone, based on data from a 2010 Survey by the International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons, she addresses that one out of every five women of all age groups in South Korea undergoes some sort of surgery procedure, making South Korea the leading country of plastic surgery (2). Plastic surgery is popular among many women in South Korea today because of one reason, to escape the reality of being non–compliant with the cultural standard of beauty, which is having small eyes, a flat nose, or a round face. Like many countries, women in South Korea solely believe that beauty correlates with the way they physically look rather than the beauty that comes within (Stone 3). Many South Korean women are unhappy with their appearance, especially when they compare themselves to attractive models, celebrities, and westernized women who meet and satisfy the standards of beauty portrayed by the media (Stone 2). But what is beauty, and what is it that makes plastic surgery so widely accepted in South Korea? In order to be compliant to the cultural beauty standard, South Korean women view plastic surgery as their definite solution to be validated as a beautiful woman. Influenced by the idolization of having a westernized look portrayed by media, South Korean women ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 15. North Korea International Relations: A Realistic... The negotiations talking on the nuclear threaten and the denuclearization of the Korean peninsula has recently shaped the agenda of North Korean system of international relations, thus affecting the patterns of foreign policy of the DPRK. This issue has gained such a priority to lead to the establishment of the 6PT experiment, thus proving to stand at the core of the debate on the stability and safety debate in the Northeast Asia region. The theory of Realism provides reasons why North Korea has positioned the nuclear weapon debate at the centre of its policy. One of the fundamental assumptions of Realism is in fact that each state, embedded in an international order characterized by a condition of antagonism, attempt to pursue its ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Burdened by dramatic level of poverty, with a starving population, lacking resources, infrastructure and capital for investments, isolated from international trade and limited in its military capability, NK could only rely on the nuclear issue to enhance its national security level. The strategy has proved successful to the extent that the country has for the first time entered, through the mechanism of the 6PT, a system of multilateral negotiations. Despite the future of the 6PT being uncertain, the nuclear issue enabled NK not only to survive and maintain its regime but also to bargain with the parties involved, ensuring a tool for obtaining international aid and for potentially reducing the burden of economic sanctions. The approach of Neoclassical Realism identifies the distribution of power in the international system as independent variable, the domestic perception of the system as intervening variable and the subsequent foreign policy decision as dependent variable. Owing to the fact that, as mentioned above, North Korea has no other resources to exploit than the nuclear to shape its foreign policy, and, in addition to that, being aware of the subordinate position it has on the international stage (from the perspective of economic and real military capability), it is here argued that its attempt to ... • 17. Can the Korean Peninsula Become a Nuclear Free Zone Who Thomas Countryman, Assistant Sectary, Department of State, Bureau of International Security and Nonproliferation (ISN) Key Policy Question: Can the Korean peninsula become a nuclear free zone? Time Period: 5 years (2014–2019) Executive Summary: North Korea has been developing nuclear weapons and long range technology since the early 1980's. North Korea has an unpredictable and erratic new leader, Kim Jung–un, the third since the communist takeover of the Northern part of the Korean peninsula. The most likely outcome to the question is that the Korean peninsula cannot become a nuclear free zone in the next five–years. There are some options to attempt to combat and control the situation in North Korea. Including: 1. (though not recommended) While some of these options are highly unlikely to be implementable, some will help contain the situation and maintain the status quo. They will keep the situation from escalating and at this point that is the best we can hope for, but no nuclear weapons in the next 5 years is highly unlikely. Assumptions: First, Kim Jung–un's leadership will continue to be erratic and unpredictable (Mievsky, Huffington ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 19. A Plan For a Complete Intelligence Collection Operation... The Korean peninsula has been a volatile area since the end of World War II. Today it is the last example of a single nation divided between two states, represents the longest division of ideologies, and is the archetype of enduring Cold War symptoms. Although small in size, The Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) has been the biggest obstacle to regional stability in Asia, its militant and hostile policies posing a threat not only to western aligned nations, but also to its former and present benefactors, Russia and China. This dangerous country represents a very important target for the United States' Intelligence Community, an extremely difficult one to exploit, but one that cannot be ignored as North Korea's ambitions ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In this assignment I will outline a design for an Intelligence Collection Operation against North Korea, with special emphasis on the country's nuclear program, listing each of the collection disciplines and crafts best suited for the task. The first and most logical step in intelligence collection against North Korea and its nuclear program is to use our eyes in the sky. Geospatial Intelligence (GEOINT) needs to be applied on a regular basis, to track terrain changes around all presently known nuclear sites, and conduct analysis of potential new sites that may be used for this purpose (e.g. a new research and or enrichment facility close to the country's uranium mines); infrared imaging should be used accordingly in order to discover new differences in thermal signatures around existing or potential sites, as this may provide information on new nuclear related operations and indicate the need for new useful intelligence products gathering. Equally important for finding the location of suspected nuclear sites, is an extensive use of Signals Intelligence (SIGINT) collection. Although DPRK government and military personnel are well trained in communications discipline, an unintentional protocol error by a lower level soldier or guard could enable a language analyst to gather a useful piece of the intelligence puzzle. China has turned out to be profoundly baffled with the administration in Pyongyang, and really needs to see a denuclearized Korean Peninsula. However, it has dependably declined to do anything that may destabilize or topple an administration which has for quite some time been both partner and cushion state. That is on the grounds that Beijing does not have any desire to see a brought together Korean state unified to the United States up against its fringe: without a doubt, a huge number of Chinese troopers kicked the bucket amid the 1950–53 Korean war to keep that occurrence. So until further notice, the current uneasy the norm for China still appears to be superior to the choices. North Korea, formally known as the Democratic Peoples Republic of Korea (DPRK), is a relic of the Cold War and the world's last remaining totalitarian Stalinist dictatorship. Arguably the most secretive state in the world, North Korea poses a unique set of challenges to the world, especially to its democratic and capitalist neighbor, South Korea, formally known as the Republic of Korea (ROK). As one of the last remnants of the Cold War era, North Korea remains an anomaly of the international system due to its unpredictable nature and disregard for international norms. • 25. Yes and No in Korean Essay Yes and No After coming to America, I have suffered from the improper usage of "yes" and "no." I sometimes confuse an affirmative response with a negative one because the usage of "yes" and "no" in Korean is different from English. For example, if I am asked, "Haven't you had dinner yet?" and I have not had dinner yet, then in Korean I usually say, "Yes, I haven't." But in English, I have to say, "No, I haven't." This different usage of "yes" and "no" in Korean and in English sometimes causes misunderstandings or even estrangements between my American friends and me. • 27. China 's Influence On The Reunification Of The Korean... Has China's role been primarily positive or negative in the reunification of the Korean Peninsula? In recent years, Asia has drawn plenty of attentions from the world, not only because of the rising great power China but also the increasingly unpredictable and unsettled North Korea. Based on the past history of German reunification in 1990 and enthusiasm for the reunification among citizens in both South Korea and North Korea, it seems to be a consensus in the world that the Korean Peninsula will eventually reunified. The remaining questions are when and how will the reunification take place. With the potential regional hegemon China continues to grow and the United States has set its pivot in Asia to restrain China's rising, there is no doubt that the reunification will greatly change the power distribution in Asia. As the only country that has meaningful relationships with both South Korea and North Korea, China is commonly viewed as the main facilitator in the reunification. As a result, China's attitudes and policies towards both countries are crucial to this issue. China has always been openly support the reunification of Korean Peninsula. As Korea emerged from four decades of brutal Japanese rule, the peninsula was then split halfway between the Soviet Union (who dominated the north) and the US (who had controlled the south) in 1948. Naturally, the country has drawn attention of many economists as well as politicians. Among various issues concerning North Korea, a topic of Korean reunification has long received economic consideration. Many existing studies estimate economic impact of Korean integration to answer a key question: Is Korean reunification worth pursuing? Some studies further extend the question to find the best way of unifying Korea. Despite heading for the same goal, the studies primarily differ in their methodologies. Some studies evaluate the impact by comparing two Korean countries with other previously unified countries such as Germany, Italy, and Vietnam (Blum, 2012; Rothacher, 2005; Wolf, 1998; Hwang, 2010). While each paper implements different economic models, the prediction is made through accounting for the difference in pre–unification statistics. They disagree, however, on the determinants of costs and benefits as well as the methodology. On the other hand, Wolf (2006) and Ahrens (2003) look into different scenarios concerning Korean reunification process. Finally, Liu and Noland (1998) construct a Computable General Equilibrium (CGE) model to describe the result of Korean reunification. Before I understood the reality of the North Korea, when I was a young and immature kid who read George Orwell's "1984", I thought that, while some of the news about the North could be true, there must be some sort of exaggeration just to reinforce the negative feelings toward North Korea. This has grown to $20,000 per capita and South Korea is now the seventh largest trading partner with the United States (Background Note: South Korea, 2008). This growth in GNP is staggering considering that it took the United States 130 years to grow its Gross Domestic Product ten fold (1870–200) (Barro, 2003). Barro (2003) notes that this growth is "fairly" evenly distributed. This distribution of income has remained relatively unchanged from 1960 to today (Barro, 2003). Life expectancy and infant mortality indicators have also significantly changed. Life expectancy has increased from 54 years to 73 years and infant mortality has dropped from 8% to 0.8% since 1960 (Barro, 2003). • 54. The Invasion Of The Korean Peninsula The Korean peninsula has been plagued with internal conflict for over half a century. To this day the inhabitants of this currently divided nation are on the verge of a full–fledged war. Each side anticipates hostile action from the other side of the 38th parallel that divides the peninsula. The daily tension along the line is palpable, and neither side is willing to acquiesce to the desires of its former people. Before the invasions of Japan and subsequent Korean War involvement of China, this now alienated nation was once united in a singular culture. Presently, North Korea (Democratic People's Republic of Korea) and South Korea's (Republic of Korea) culture could not be further from each other. Commencing the extremist isolationism ... The psychological damage done by anti–American propaganda instilled in the north will be most challenging to reverse for generations of Koreans. Once North Korea is no longer isolated from the rest of the world, they will begin to realize the hostile regime they were once subjugated under. With the Kim family losing its governing strength along with an inability to project strong leadership, it will not be long before North Korea finds itself in the midst of a regime change. This will give the south an opportunity to initiate an operation to regain control of the north, and reunite its peoples under a singular nation once ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

North Korea ( Nk ) Introduction North Korea (nK), bordering the Republic of Korea (ROK), also known as South Korea to the south and China to the north , maintains a standing army of over million soldiers , a large special operations force , and a sizable missile force . At the strategic level, maintaining situational awareness of North Korea's activities is paramount to countering an all–out attack on South Korea. Consider the following scenario in which nK would gear up for an attack on South Korea. In this scenario, after a successful long range missile test, nK leadership has stepped up its anti US/ROK alliance rhetoric. Three possible PIRs from a strategic perspective are: 1) How will nK Special Operations Forces infiltrate into the ROK? 2) What avenue of approach will nK forces use to seize Seoul? 3) How will nK employ chemical weapons? Infiltration of North Korean (nK) Special Forces will inhibit reinforcements as they could target lines of communication in rear areas which will likely disrupt northward movement. Seizing Seoul is likely the first objective for any North Korean advance as Seoul houses the government of the ROK as well as a large portion of the population. nK has an active WMD program to include chemical weapons. nK chemical arsenal could likely make up for shortfalls in conventional force training, equipment, and supplies. These intelligence requirements, if answered, will give decision points on how to counter the nK Threat. The collection matrix below shows the relationship between PIRs, indicators, and intelligence collection disciplines. PIR 1 deals with nK Special Operations Forces (SOF). • 58. South Kore A Dramatic Change Of Multiculturalism South Korea has faced a dramatic change of multiculturalism brought by globalization. An influx of different races and ethnicities from all over the world has changed dynamics of race and ethnicity in South Korea. From nation–state with homogenous ethnicity, South Korea is now transforming into racially, ethnically diversified society. According to Korea government, as of 2015, the number of foreign residents in South Korea exceeded 1.5 million, which means three out of one hundred in population of Korean are foreigners. Particularly, the number of immigrant workers from China and South–East Asia (Indonesia, the Philippines, India, Nepal, etc.) is increasing due to economic development of South Korea, supplying cheap labor to the labor–starved service industry (Seol & Skrentny, 2009). As multiculturalism is celebrated by the government (Yim, 2002), the media industry in South Korea captures this cultural phenomenon by showing racial diversity. For instances, several educational TV programs – e.g., Non–Summit (JTBC, 2014 – ), Global Talk Show (KBS, 2006– 2010), Love in Asia (KBS, 2005 – ) – invite foreigners who currently live in South Korea in the show discussions for the purpose of reducing prejudices to different culture and achieving multiculturalism. On the contrary to an increase in foreign images in these shows, racial diversity is hardly found in soap opera. Considering unique characteristics of soap opera genre that constructs pseudo–reality to deliver a sense of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Although most of this area is mountainous and sparsely populated, approximately 30% of the total land area of South Korea is flat enough for agricultural and urban development. Located in the northwestern part of the country, Seoul, the capital of South Korea, is a metropolis home to more than ten million residents. Seoul is a city full of culture and history as Soh (n.d.) states "The palaces, shrines, and other vestiges of the Choson Dynasty are still prominent features of the city north of the Han River, serving as major tourist attractions". There are four general regions in South Korea: the broad basin of the Nakdong River dominates the southeast; the southwest has mountains and valleys; the west has coastal plains, river basins, and rolling hills; and the east has high mountain ranges and narrow coastal plains (Geography and climate, 2012). The Yellow Sea and the East China Sea border the western and southern coasts, respectively, and contain about three thousand islands which are mostly small and uninhabited. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The first is external: the challenge posed by its nuclear weapons program and the threat of proliferation off the Korean Peninsula. The second is essentially but not wholly internal: the challenge posed by the pending transfer of power in Pyongyang and potential for instability as the process plays out. This complex reality underscores the need for balance and strategic patience if the twin dangers of proliferation and instability on the peninsula are to be successfully managed. In order to produce these changes in the policy, there must be a determination of the ends/ goals, ways for achieving the goals, and means as the instruments and activities for implementing ways. The history of the relationship between the United States and North Korea led up to today's policy of dealing with North Korea through diplomatic channels. The U.S. helped to divide the Korean peninsula at the end of World War II, and then waged war against North Korea in the 1950s. Although the U.S. signed a peace agreement rather than a peace treaty with North Korea after the war, its policy toward the country changed. Instead of trying to overthrow the North Korea government, the U.S. government adopted a policy of containing communism. During the 1980's, associations between North Korea and the U.S. start to take on a new diplomatic form. North Korea's nuclear weapons program had become a pressing international issue ... • 72. The Movie ' The Warlords ' Essay The several movies portrayed in this course were very helpful in understanding Asian history. In my opinion, these movies were helpful in the way that they introduced the fundamental basic history about how the wars shaped the outcome of Korea and China. These movies were helpful because they provided an overall consideration of the different perspectives of the wars. In the movie The Warlords, we gained knowledge about the Manchu government's perspective and in the movie The Front Line, we gained knowledge from both the north's and south's Korea armies sides. As Richard Bernstein said "movie makers and television producers have become our most powerful, though perhaps not our most careful, historians." He stated that it was fair to say that society used to think that they are getting history, or what they think is history, from the movies than from the standard history books. However, he also confirmed that the actors have a great influence on the production of the movie as well – "many of the latest history movies deal not with distant events but with the central episodes and actors of our era." In addition, Bernstein contributed to his argument that the artists could distort the facts of the history by pointing that the society grants the artists the power to comment on both our past and our present. Thus, intentionally or not, the artists could betray the history presented to the public by commenting their personal's opinions. However, in my opinion, the movies The ...
