1. Research: Horror Sub-Genres:
Comedy-Horror: This is comedy with traditional horror movie; themes, characters and
entertainment. The comedy horror genre can cross over into the Black Comedy sub-genre.
Comedy horror films aim to scare the audience, but also provide comical outlets the
audience to laugh at their fear.
Slasher: Slasher films are a sub-genre of Horror film that revolves around a psychopathic,
mentally deranged killer. The killer stalks and slays his victims in extremely violent and
disturbing ways. Many weapons are used such as; chainsaws, knife’s and meat cleavers. A
slasher film will devote screen time to portray terror, murderer and dramatic horrifying thriller.
Psychological horror: Is based on a characters fears, guilt, beliefs, and emotional stability.
At times the film can be supernatural such as ghosts and demons to build tension and
further the film.
Supernatural-horror: A sub-genre that includes ghosts and demons. Common themes in
Supernatural-horror include the afterlife, the devil and demonic possession. Supernatural
films also sometimes combine elements of religion.
Zombie film: Zombie films are a sub-genre that portrays mindless human beings or
reanimated corpseswho are sometimes raised from the dead. These films often include
zombie feasting on human flesh. Zombie horror falls into other genres such as; Sci-Fi,
Thriller and Comedy. The plot of a zombie film also resolves around the struggle between
the living and the living-dead.
Gothic horror: Gothic horror is a type of genre that contains elements of Goth and horror.
Sometimes it may have romance that uncovers in the setting of a horror tale.
Teen-horror:Is a sub-genre that revolves around teenagers, these movies having a large
cast and hero or last girl standing. Teen Horror films often play upon traditional teenage
issues, such as; dating, prom or travelling somewhere and therefore turn them into thrilling
situations.
Sci-Fi horror: A sub-genre of science fiction and horror, usually where the sci-fi aspects
such as; aliens, and space travel etc are used to precipitate the overriding of horror.
Splatter-horror: This sub-genre focus on graphic portrayals of gore and graphic violence.
Through the use of blood and guts they are disposed to display and interest in the litigation
of the human body. Not all splatter films are slashers, and not all splatter films are always
horrors.
Body horror: The horror is derived from the graphic destruction of generation of the body.
Other types of the body horror include awkward movements, or incorrect placements of body
parts or limbs to create ‘monsters’ out of human body parts by murdering humans.
Natural-horror: A sub-genre of horror featuring nature running in the form of beasts,
insects, harmless animals and spider webs or all human beings turned into cold blooded
killers. This genre may sometimes overlap with the science fiction and action and adventure
horror.
2. Action-horror:A sub-genre combining the obtrusion of an evil force, or supernatural
personage of horror movies with gunfights and frenetic chases of the action genre. Themes
often predominant in typical action-horror films include; gore demons, vicious animals and
vampires and most frequentlyzombies.
