3. Action Horror- combines evil, or supernatural events, which
often include gun fights and chases. Elements include zombies,
blood and gore, vampires and demons. Examples of Action
Genre films are Dawn of the Dead and From Dusk Till Dawn.
Body Horror- Where horror comes from the deconstruction of
the human body and people’s limbs are often used to create
monsters, or for dysfunctional purposes, which creates fear to
the viewer. Examples of Body Horror films are Cabin Fever and
The Invasion.
Teen Horror- Characters revolve around a group of teenagers and
often deals with traditional teenage problems, such as school,
prom and dating. Examples of this genre are Texas Chainsaw
Massacre and the Scream movies.
Comedy Horror- Combines Horror fiction and Comedy.
Examples of this genre are Scary Movie, Gremlins and Shaun of
the Dead.
4. Gothic Horror- Includes landscapes and settings such as: dungeons,
haunted, old houses and castles. Examples of this kind of film are
Dracula and Frankenstein.
Supernatural-Includes ghosts, demons and other portrays of
supernatural occurrences. Also, Supernatural-Horror films can include
demonic possessions, devils and the afterlife and can contain quite
gruesome, violent scenes. An example of this genre is The Exorcist.
Psychological- At times, the supernatural is used to move the plot
further, but the genre revolves around the emotional instability and
fear of the characters. Examples of this are The Shining and The
Exorcist.
Slasher- Has a lot of violence throughout and has a psychopathic serial
killer as a character, who ends up killing people. An example of this is
The Texas Chain saw Massacre.
Zombie- Zombie films are films that basically feature the living dead
attacking and feeing off the living. Examples of this genre are Dawn of
the Dead and I Am Legend.
Monster- Involves around humans and monsters and the monster is
usually the villain. The films portray a hero/heroine who ends up saving
the world from the monster. Examples of this genre are Aliens and
Godzilla.
5. Horror films aim to create a sense of fear for the audience
and rely on scaring the audience and usually there’s an
appearance of an evil person/force or bad event. Many
Horror films also feature creatures like vampires, ghosts
and zombies and incorporate lots of violence, blood and
gore. Horror film can also overlap with Thriller, Sciencefiction and Fantasy genres.
Le Manoir Du Diable (aka The Devil’s Castle/The Haunted
Castle) was the first film that people assumed released in
1896 by a French filmmaker Georges Melies. The film was
only two minutes long and was assumed to be the first
Horror film made. It contained elements that are still seen
in Horror’s today, such as: demons, ghosts, skeletons, and
witches.
