What is Research and Development (R&D)?
Research and Development (R&D) is a process bywhich a company obtains
new knowledge and uses it to improve existing products and introduce new ones
to its operations. R&D is a systematic investigation with the objective of
introducing innovations to the company’s current productofferings.
It achieves this by adding improvements to the current goods and services or
introducing a new productoffering. Research and Development (R&D) theme
Research and development are applied across different industries and sectors.
Generally, pharmaceuticals, software, technology, and semiconductor
companies incur the highest R&D spending.
The role of a company’s research and development (R&D) department is to turn
ideas into marketable products. The precise nature of this work varies
depending on the industry – for example, a pharmaceutical company’s R&D
department may focus on drug discovery and development, whereas in other
sectors they may be tasked with the design of new products and processes.
Industries with companies with a large number of intangible assets generally
report high spending in research and development efforts.
Types of Research and Development
Research and development(R&D) can involve basic researchor applied
research.
Basic researchaims to a comprehensive understanding of a subject, and to
build a bodyof knowledge relating to it. As such it may not have an immediate
practical or commercial application, but it still can be of interest to a business or
organization.
It is the sortof research that might then initiate further concepts and lead to
applied research.
Applied researchis much more specific with a set of objectives related to a
particular customer or industry need or requirement. Under applied research,
any investigations will focus on commercial objectives to do with processesor
products.
This latter form of research will most likely lead to development, with the
production of materials, systems and methods.
Development itself involves different stages and functions. One is prototyping
and designing for production; the other is engineering or manufacturing to
producecommercial products, based onthe designs and prototypes from the
earlier stage.
Cycle of research and development
 Define.
 Design.
 Develop.
 Deliver.
Define: Brainstorming ideas is the first step in research and development.
During this stage, a team engages in discussionto considerissues and potential
needs in a specific industry.
This discussiontypically begins generally, and the process narrows the focus
down to specific areas of concern or opportunity. Challenges that are
determined to be insurmountable will likely be set aside so the team can focus
on products or processesthat can be successfully developed and implemented.
Design:The design and development phase involves creating a plan for how to
take an idea and make it into a productor process. A period of trial and error
typically involves a series of prototype products, with each one improving on
the design to eliminate flaws or limitations.
The complexity of a productmay evolve with each prototype. Eventually,
designers will consider issues such as how to mass-producea productand how
to present it to consumers with the most effective sales tactics.
Develop:Once a team has chosenan idea to pursue, further exploration and
research begins. Continual refinement occurs with the help of market surveys to
determine market potential. As potential is ascertained, the team will continue
to refine and develop the idea.
Exploration of a design budget also occurs during this phase. Eventually,
researchers will engage the assistance of productdevelopers, who will work to
develop prototypes of the productor process, which further enables exploration
and hypothesis.
Deliver: The prototypeproductcontinues to evolve during the development and
testing process. Developers considerany applicable regulatory aspects of the
work to ensure that the productadheres to all criteria required for final approval
and launch of the product.
The development team will devise and implement any modifications necessary
to comply with these regulations. The team will also develop marketing
strategies that include pricing and distribution.
Roles and responsibilities of R&D manager
These are the roles and responsibilities of the Research and Development
Manager listed below:
 Develop concepts, products, and solutions by coordinating with
Orthopedics business units.
 Understand customer expectations on to-be manufactured product.
 Determine and execute improved technologies used by suppliers,
competitors, and customers.
 SupportDirector to hire and develop R&D personnel.
 Establish project goals and priorities by collaborating with Marketing and
Operations.
 Transfer new technologies, products, and manufacturing process into and
out of the company.
 Research, design and evaluate materials, assemblies, processesand
equipment.
 Develop concepts, products, and solutions by working with company
business units.
 Monitor team metrics and objectives ensuring meeting of goals.
 Document all phases of research and development.
 Manage customer relationships and perform RFP Review, Customer
Visits, and ProductTesting.
Skill required by manager(R&D)
In relation to pharmaceuticals, the research and development manager requires
some special skills to meet up the demand of his/her designation.
Some of the skills required to become a Research and Development manager as
listed:
 Vast knowledge about organic or medicinal chemistry.
 Knowledge about formulation chemistry.
 Structural biology.
 Genetics.
 Excellent verbal communication skills.
 Thinking and reasoning skills.
 To be thorough and pay attention to detail.
 Math knowledge.
 Analytical thinking skills.
 The ability to use own initiative.
 Active listening skills.
 To be able to carry out basic tasks on a computer or hand-held device.
Research and Development is of great importance in business as the level of
competition, productionprocesses and methods are rapidly increasing.
It is of special importance in the field of marketing where companies keep an
eagle eye on competitors and customers in order to keep pace with modern
trends and analyze the needs, demands and desires of their customers.
If a company has made some significant contribution in R&D, the results are
bound to be good but higher R&D spending does not signify more creativity,
higher profit or a greater market share.
