CREATES AN ATMOSPHERE OF
CONSTANT IMPROVEMENT
Good Afternoon, and for those visiting from the West Coast, Good Morning!
My name is Mike Eldridge, and I’m the founder and CEO of SafetyGlassesUSA.com
The title of this presentation is Content Is King….Again, but I would argue that Content has always been king.
Good content is what separates your website from the masses. It keeps your visitors coming back and, when implemented correctly, can increase your search engine rankings.
So, I’m going to quickly review why good content is important and give you some tips on how to come up content topics and ideas.
Why is GOOD Content Important?
Increases Customer Satisfaction: Happy customers are good customers. Providing the content they want increases their trust and loyalty. Don’t underestimate the power of “Word of Mouth” advertising.
Reduces bounce rate and increases time on page because visitors have found the information their looking for. BTW bounce rate is a signal in Google’s ranking algorithm.
Potential to increase conversions: By providing the information customers want, you increase the likelihood they will buy your product or service.
Builds your brand’s authority. You become THE source for information about your product, service or industry. Your information can be trusted and is often referenced.
Improves your site’s SEO. Quality content, when combined with proper SEO techniques, improves your chances of ranking higher. - Neil Patel from neilpatel.com says, “Basically, Google has one mission: to provide the best searching experience for users. If you can help them with that mission, you’ll be rewarded”.
Attracts links: Good content has a higher chance of attracting quality links from influencers in your niche.
Increases social sharing: Visitors are more likely to share good content vs bland or none useful content.
Now that you understand why good content is important, you are probably asking yourself, how do I come up with content ideas?
Hint: Little birds can’t help you.
Here are some content ideas to get you started.
Answer questions: Are there any unanswered or poorly answered questions in your niche? Use your expertise to create detailed answers to these questions.
Relate a personal experience or passion: Do you or your coworkers have any experiences, stories or hobbies that translate into content for your site? Story telling done well can be very powerful.
Cover a hot topic in your field or niche: Create content around trending topics. This can include web trends, television, industry and local news, etc. However, be careful with polarizing topics, such as politics, religion, etc.
Product reviews: Use product reviews to expand on product features and uses. Demonstrate how customers are using your products or how your product/service are solving problems.
Share interesting or funny facts about your products, services or industry: People love to share funny stuff. Use humorous stories, pictures, videos and comments from customers, employees and industry reps.
Here are some Tools to help you find content ideas.
AnswerThePublic.com - A excellent resource for finding questions. Enter some keywords, select a country and you’ll receive a list of popular questions containing those keywords! Hint: This process is also helpful for building FAQ pages!
BloomBerry.com - Similar to Answer The Public, but breaks up the list of questions into topics.
MOZ Keyword Explorer - Using the “are questions” filter you can see a list of questions for the key words you entered. MOZ Keyword Explorer provides estimated volume and relevance, which is a nice bonus.
Quora.com - Another great source for finding questions related to your vertical or niche.
Google Analytics, Acquisition>Search Console. Use a filter to search queries containing, “How, When, What, Why and Where.” These are questions your site is showing up for in Google already. Sorting the results by Impressions and Average Ranking helps you find low hanging fruit.
Here are some Sources to help you with content ideas.
Use your website’s search query reports. Pull a fresh report every 30-90 days, depending on traffic.
Have your customer service reps keep a list of customer questions. Review the list ever 1-2 weeks so you can quickly identify trends. Create or update existing content to answer repetitive questions.
Conversations with customers, industry reps or other business owners. Reflect on past discussions, meetings, phone calls, emails, etc. to mine nuggets of information worth sharing. It’s like insider trading, only better, because its legal!
Customer reviews. Research and address reviews where customers expressed confusion or difficulty finding info. Your less than stellar customer reviews can be a gold mine for content ideas. Customers are literally telling you why they are not happy and how you need to improve. Use this opportunity to create content that educates and entertains.
Niche Forums: Look for popular topics where you can add value. Many forums have reoccurring questions. Use these questions to develop detailed content so you become THE source of information everyone trusts. And, with a little luck, links to.
Enter your keywords into Answer The Public. Make sure you select the appropriate country for your accurate results.
ATP will generate lists of questions based upon what, when, where, why, how etc.
Click on a list to see individual search questions.
Click on each question to see Google results.
Identify the unanswered or poorly answered questions and attack the low hanging fruit first.
Open MOZ Keyword Explorer
Enter your key words.
Use the “Are Questions” filter
Use the Relevancy and Volume columns to sort your list.
Export your list.
Enter each search phrase into Google and attack the low hanging fruit first.
Open Google Analytics
Proceed to Acquisition then Search Console.
Using the Advanced Filter, create a “Search Query” filter for “how, what, when, where, why” etc,.
Make sure you use 30-90 days (or longer) of data for the best results.
Sort your results by the highest impressions.
Export your data for each filter to a spreadsheet so you can compile a complete list of questions.
Search Google using each search query to identify the low hanging fruit.
To prove that I’m not full of hot air, here are a few examples of content ideas that actually worked.
