Call sheets are production documents used to communicate important production details to crew members. Since you were the sole crew member, call sheets were not necessary for your production. Let's move on to discussing your production record/log.
3. RESEARCH & IDEA
GENERATION
Aesop Rock & Tabaco: Churro
A simple visualizer/ lyric video that I thought of was
some stock footage of an eagle with hand drawn
lyrics and small images in the theme of the song
being drawn over the footage. I feel that this would
highlight the lyrical qualities of the song as well as
being, as low budget and homely as the album itself.
Another idea was a typical “walk and talk” rap video
with a focus on the rapper in question. My idea
would be walk through a wood with some old hermit
telling the audience about the Pennsylvania eagle
pair. With cutaways to thematic stuff like coffee
stained spreadsheets, in accordance with the lyrics.
This would be an interesting twist on a long held
hip-hop trope, something that is very much in the
spirit of Aesop's body of work.
My other idea would be an animated video, to reflect
the cartoonish view of nature that Aes criticizes,
throughout the song. It would also allow Aes’s
typical overly sardonic writing style to take center
4. DEEE-LITE:
GROOVE IS IN
THE HEART.
The video for Groove is in the Heart
is about as cheesy as the song itself,
with a wacked out 60s hippy
aesthetic in the video’s set design
and costumes. Camera angles are
either low or high to keep the video
light-hearted and energetic, fish-eye
lenses are used for the same reason.
Performances in a similar vein, keep
the tone light, fun and cheesy with
over the top dancing and
movements. Editing is fairly heavily
used, with the entire background
being Chroma-keyed out. Other
edits include the 4 floating Q-tip
heads and bizarre cuts and post
process effects like keying.
5. QUELLE CHRIS:
OBAMACARE.
The art design for Obamacare is something to admire,
with its grim almost apocalyptic aesthetic and Terry
Gilliam animation style. Its crude and lumbering just like
the song's instrumental. The video contains loads of
politically and socially charged imagery which obviously
ties in with the themes of the song. (it's literally called
Obamacare.)
6. RUN THE
JEWELS:
LEGEND HAS
IT.A subversive stylish take on a rap
video, using motifs common in
both rap videos and rap as a
musical genre such as close-up
"rap to camera" shots or drug use.
These can be considered both
intertextual references and stylistic
choices. On top of elements that
are almost purely visual there all
also many political and social
references that deepen the
meaning and quality of the piece.
7. HAIL MARY MALLON -
WHALES
A video that makes the classic rapper
persona look childish, massively
unrealistic and sort of sad. Two bums
brag about their imaginary wealth to
nobody but themselves, it’s a pretty
witty take on one of raps oldest
motifs. The puppets make the idea
look even more childish and
unrealistic as well as the abstract
ambiance matching well with the
ridiculous, abstract lyrics.
8. FATHER JOHN MISTY –
TOTAL ENTERTAINMENT
FOREVERAs this song and video are about the society and
media's role in it, it seems fitting that this should
come after Legend Has It's and Whales. The video
uses uncanny sets to reinforce that this is
a saturated, simulated reality, the use a founding
father (George Washington in this case) receiving a
VR headset as a gift which he uses after he takes
Viagra shows that John sees America or at least its
establishment as pathetic and masturbatory. Inside
the virtual world Kurt Cobain is crucified by a
pastiche of MacDonald's who pitch him, a martyr for
creativity next to the other symbols of tired tropes
and fads. And America not only allows this to happen
but pleasures in it as previously said. I'm certain
there's more to dig into like the alien
referencing creature coming out of john's chest being
a refence to the urge to sell out that might be
consuming him, it's up in the air. I feel that this video
trusts its audience to interpret it without spoon-
9. POTENTIAL SONGS
Colossus – Idles
That’s Just the Way That I Feel – Purple Mountains
Danger $$$ - King Gizzard and The Lizard Wizard
Kiss the Cook – Blockhead (feat. Aesop Rock)
(How Could Anybody) Feel At Home – Open Mike Eagle
10. POTENTIAL
TECHNIQUES
Cutting on the beat / to the rhythm – Gives the visuals a
rhythmic feel that is essential for any music videos.
Camera angles and edits that portray a message
implicitly – This allows viewers to get meaning out of
simple techniques that is needed in a medium that is
typically limited to 2 minutes of video and fast cuts, so
low camera angles in rap videos to imply dominance, for
instance, are useful for a quick piece of information.
Intertextual elements – This is a reference to another
piece of media to enhance the meaning of the piece in
which it appears this could be anything from a
Shakespeare quote written down somewhere or
characters being seen, all of which imply something
about the video and its meaning, this is especially
important for music videos where visual shortcuts are
11. CONVENTIONS YOU
PLAN TO USE
I want to draw from the more artsy corners of the music
world as such I want to call on the trope of a middle age
man getting haunted by an ambiguous evil, this is seen
all across the indie music scene or a variant of it. I want
to use locked camera angles that are wide showing off
the environment and making the subject feel slightly
out-of-place. The only camera movement I want if you
can even call it that is a slow gradual zoom this is
reinforce the atmosphere of something being “off” in a
word I want to make the environment feel uncanny and
uncomfortable. So using the techniques of Stanley
Kubrick and David Lynch would seem an apt fit for a
video like that.
13. MIND MAP OF IDEAS
[SUMMARY OF IDEAS]
This mind map is partalliy incomplete as the music video was
fundimentally changed twice after this mindmap was made. And
due to the rush involved in changing the music video twice within
a week I didn't have time to formally plan out the final product.
14. SUMMARY
5 opportunities of your ideas:
Getting to film with a professional actor.
Learning to work with the limited resourses that I have
access to.
Learning to use match shots.
Learning to shoot around sunlight
Getting to film abstact and artsy imagery.
(As stated, a few times throughout my writing I had to
change the video twice at the last minute some of these
are no longer accrute to the final product.)
15. SUMMARY
5 restrictions to your ideas:
I had pretty much no props
I only had one location
I had limted movement options with a fire in front of me
I was the only actor if you could call it that
Light was limted at that time of night.
16. FINAL IDEA –
ARTIST/TITLE/INFO
(OUTDATED)
Colossus : IDLES
A Brighton hard rock/ punk band with two studio albums
under their belt. Both LPs are deeply political and socially
charged with ripping, muscular, instrumentals and a
defining vocal performance from the band's frontman Joe
Talbot.
Colossus deals with masculinity, insecurity and living in
someone's shadow. The song comes in two parts, with
part one being a slow paced, haunting scene setter, part
two is a bombastic declaration of independence.
17. FINAL IDEA –
ARTIST/TITLE/INFO
Glided Lamp of the Cosmos : Ultimate Spinach
A psychedelic rock group from Boston that was the most
well-known out of the "bosstown sound" movement of
the late 60's.
Glided Lamp of the Cosmos is possibly one of the most
stereotypical "hippy" songs of the 60's with political
commentary about as subtle as a truck to the face and
about as pretentious as a songs lyrics could be and I love
it because of this.
18. FINAL IDEA – YOUR IDEA
Your creative concept/video synopsis [describe your
interpretation, use of imagery or narrative, genre
conventions, etc]
I chose a lyric video due to time constantans, this was
not to say that it was easy, I had no prier use or
knowledge of this form of video editing software or
bomb fires, etc.
20. GUIDANCE:
PRE-PRODUCTION
ASSESSMENT
You need to assess the viability of your production and
investigate what is required to enable you to make your
music video
Much of this task is hypothetical, which means you will
need to investigate standard costings for such a
production and apply these to your planned production
considering which equipment you would need and
resources, etc
Resources to support this are in the Pre-production
assessment folder on Blackboard
Delete the questions on each slide and insert your
responses
21. TITLE OF
PRODUCTION/PRODUCTI
ON OUTLINE
My intention was to create a lyric video. With a simple,
cozy visualette style with psychedelic visual elements. All
I needed to accomplish this was a camera, anything
flammable that I had no need for, a lighter and a
makeshift camera stand of two boxes to film the video.
To edit the video I used a graphic pad, Photoshop 2020,
After Effects 2020 and Premier Pro 2020.
22. LOCATIONS
Most of my locations are just some of my friend's houses
all of which I've done some sort of recce on, by that I
mean doing a quick check if myself and my one actor
would fit in the location along with a tripod. I'm
confident that filming will go smoothly given these
recces. (outdated)
My one and only location was the back of my house, I did
a recce of sorts, as in I live there so I knew I could light a
fire without an arrest warrant and I could get water
quickly if needed.
23. EQUIPMENT
The college's kit supply was unexpectedly booked out at
the time of production so I'll have to use what I have to
hand, that being a camcorder and whatever tripod I can
scrounge.
29. ATMOSPHERE
I wanted the video to reflect the song’s psychedelic
elements with small abstract animations. I really like the
“late night/ early morning” aesthetic that that
underground and counterculture art has always put
forward so I wanted to capture that in the setting. As well
as being a staple of underground music it also ties into
the mysterious lyrics of the song with the visuals being
so vague it inspires some questions.
30. MEANING
As a hippy ballad of government corruption and a
exclamation of a hippy’s way of life, as such somebody
sat by a campfire burning paper could be taken a few
ways.
31. RIP-O-MATIC
You should also construct a 15-20second Rip-o-matic
test reel using existing footage to convey the type of
video you want to make
32. STRUCTURAL
BREAKDOWN
INTRO: Credits – establish the visual style to come.
VERSE: Lyrics – relaxing, constant, snappy.
CHORUS: Hand drawn Lyrics – inviting, comforting.
33. STORYBOARDING
After shooting the source
footage for my video I had a
distinct Idea of how my video
should look. So I made a quick
sketch for later reference.
34. SHOT LIST
There was one, static shot throughout the whole video. A
medium shot of a campfire and somebody say around it.
36. PRODUCTION GROUP
INFO
Include names, contact info, and defined roles at
difference stages of production, using a table is
suggested
Film Crew (Night) Edit Crew
Me (actor, cameraman,
stuntman, director,
campfire specialist, etc)
Me (Everything)
37. LOCATION INFORMATION
A small patch of grass, behind which is a small bunch of
high grass and other weeds. This location has enough
space to have a campfire.
39. RISK ASSESSMENT
There were a few risks involved with the very rushed
shoot.
1. A risk of neighbors getting panicked, to get around
this I told some of my neighbors about the shoot. The
issue being that I couldn’t tell everyone so if somebody
saw this without prior knowledge could’ve called
firefighters or the police, even though I had permission
to film there and a way to safely put out the fire, it
obviously would’ve heavily delayed the shoot.
2. A risk of a real fire, which I got around by filming on a
wet night with 2 massive bottles of water on hand.
40. CONTINGENCY
PLANNING
My final video was a contingency plan for the original
convergency plan. My first video needed a lot to go right
and I knew that, so I came up with another video. The
first video was a visually dynamic, intricate video with a
distinct message. Because of a family emergency my
main actor couldn’t make the shoot, this was at the very
last minute this basically killed the video. I had a
contingency plan, a skate video as I knew that my
brother skated, when I pitched the video to him he was
ecstatic. But as we shot he and his friend started to get
bored quickly, they bailed without filming major parts of
the video. I really didn’t expect this from their
excitement at the start of the shoot, so I couldn’t plan
around it. With the work I put off to be able to shoot
getting out of hand and a deadline coming ever closer, I
improvised the shoot and edit with extremely minimal
