Individual Practice
An attempt to challenge yourself as a leader or implement a unique strength. This can be an
event or situation that happened during the class or recently. Ideally, use the concepts from
class to challenge yourself in some way, and then write about the outcome.
1. What happened? (Background, brief description of events, specific leadership actions)
What were the results? (Real or potential. Try to include both positive and negative
possibilities. Even if the event seemed clearly good or bad, consider unintended
consequences.)
Me and my internship group were not clear about the instructions of the tasks that we should be
developing for the company. They just explained briefly about the project and their expectations,
but we felt that we were missing information for starting to work on it. We tried to develop some
deliverables to show them that we were really focused and innovative as they required, but on
the first meeting with our mentor we found out that we were not close to what they wanted. One
of my teammates decided to email our boss for an online meeting and from that moment we
understood what they really wanted, and we designed a business work plan for starting the
deliverables.
2. Why did this happen? (Consider all possible factors, including the people and the situation)
This happen because there was a lot of confusion with the tasks that we were supposed to be
doing and we should have prepared better for the first meeting with more questions and
expectations from the company. Also, the company should have prepared a training or a
bootcamp to know more about the company mission, vision and get know them better, so we can
offer them better solutions for the job that we have to deliver.
3. What class concepts are relevant to this situation? (Mention at least one concept from class
and how they can be used to interpret the situation.)
- Leadership
- Team management
- Group orientation
- Team motivation
In our specific case I believe, that at the beginning we needed to be guided better from our
leader of the company. Because of his time, he was not able to work with us and there was a lot
of misunderstanding on the deliverables and the project. On the other hand, inside our group we
never organized to determine our roles and it was clear that there was a lack of a leader.

4. What did you learn from this? (Broader lessons that might apply to other situations or
problems.)
I learned that it is better first to set the roles in the group to know better how to manage time,
information and to be prepared to discuss about what the project is going to be about. Once we
organized in the group everything started to be easier and with the agenda, we organized was
even faster and more consistent to have a better environment within the group. Communication
is the basic for working with teams and it is very important to know how to get to people.
