2. Forum allows community members to participate in
the news event and provide their own opinion
“The natural curiosity of humankind means that by
reporting details of scheduled events , disclosing
wrongdoing, or outlining a developing trend, Journalism
sets people to wondering”(1)
Allows for an open debate with minimal errors
“We rely on the marketplace of facts and ideas, not just
journalism, to sort out the truth”(2)
Bloggers post their opinions based on a link they provide(3)
3. With such possibility to post without a status of
expertise, we need to be able to make sure the research
one has done is valid.
You cannot be excused from validating the facts.
Journalist have an obligation to tell the truth, and only
that.
4. Television, and Radio
Talk shows
Allows more of the community but deals more with comedy
Call in Shows
has its political debates but they appeal to an extreme side which
isn't as good for journalism because it doesn’t include the whole
community
Allows the ability to broadcast news as it happens but no
place to criticize or compromise
Internet
The latest tool journalist use to distribute news
Journalist must still abide by the foundations of journalism
Truth, source citing, create a public forum for criticism and
compromise

doesn’t matter your level of expertise

and public affairs programming in a 24 hour period, which
might have been the peak in the argument culture(4)
A lot of places mediums do not bother to check facts but
rather be the first to have the news and if it was wrong
replace it with the correct facts later
Makes for bad journalism because journalist have an
obligation to provide the truth
Has allowed experts opinion to become less critical in news
Anyone can post a news story now on the internet and correct
facts later or remove it if it is false
6. Chancellor of the University of California at Berkeley
“Democracy is based on a compromise between the
majority and minority.
Compromise, however, becomes impossible if every
issue is raised to the level of moral imperative, framed
in a way to produce ultimate shock stories”(5)
We aren't telling journalistic stories if we just
manipulate the news to be shocking
The web has created this factor because markets want
their article to stick out. They want the numbers rather
than following the main point of being a journalist
7. 1. The chapter opens up with a talk show called hardball
A journalist tuned into the channel with the talk show
After awhile, he noticed that the conversation was about him
He had approached the lady being interviewed threatening her
to drop a case
Soon the word got out it was Cody Shearer
Shearer started receiving death threats and would get hundreds
every hour because his name was released on television talk
shows and radio shows.
Mathews (the interviewer of the talk show) later apologized for
releasing his name on air without talking to Shearer about it
The story of shearer approaching the lady was a false rumor

ever made of a subject was ever identified
Networks reported without checking facts and caused
a big scandal
Reported by NY Times
9. AllAfrica.com
Media plays a large role in democracy
Politicians do not like negative press close to elections
and sometimes that is what the press digs up.
It is the presses job to cover stories to provide facts
about candidates to that the public knows who they
are voting for.
We cannot be biased otherwise we are failing to create
the public forum to help citizens
