2. Overview
The target learners I have chosen to focus this lesson plan on are 1st grade math
students who are learning about addition and subtraction.
The Smart Board Lesson Plan that I will be adapting is called “1st Grade
Subtraction” and was posted to SMART Exchange by Hannah Brown.

3. Defining the Terms
I will start my lesson plan by defining Addition and Subtraction.
I will have these terms already showing on the slide and their definitions hidden by
implementing the pull down feature that Hannah used in slide 2.
I will first ask my students to form a hypothesis of what they think the definitions
are. I can do this by having students volunteer to answer or by having them write it
down to turn in later.
I will then allow a student or students to pull down the correct definitions of the
terms.
4. Simple Problems
Next I will provide simple practice problems using pictures that the students can drag from the “My
Content” folder. These problems will be similar to those found in slides 3-6 of the lesson plan I am
adapting.
Example: The solution would not be present when the slide is first shown. The student will choose the
apple from the “My Content” folder and would have to decide how many to drag onto the slide in order to
solve the problem.
5. Separating Clue Words
In addition and subtraction, clue words can help students determine which sign they will need to use for a
certain word problem.
In the “1st Grade Subtraction” lesson plan, Hannah has her students separate simple word problems into
addition and subtraction categories. I will use this strategy later in my lesson plan, but thought it would be
useful to have the students do this same activity with only clue words first. This will help them recognize
what words are most useful to look for and make the separation of the word problems later in the lesson
easier.
To make sure I was using relevant clue words, I used the link below for ideas.

6. Separating Clue Words
Students will volunteer to come to the board and drag a word into the category they believe it falls under.

7. Separating Simple Word Problems
This is when I will use Hannah’s strategy of having the students categorize simple word problems. It will
be extremely similar to the previous activity, but a little more challenging.

8. Solve Word Problems
After the students have become comfortable deciding which sign to use when
dealing with word problems, I will then present actual word problems for them to
solve.
The problems will have an excess of pictures that the problem contains, and they
will not be grouped together. I will ask the students to drag the pictures to match
the problem, leaving any extra at the bottom, as well as pick what sign they will
use. They will then be asked to use the pen to write the equation numerically.
This idea was inspired by slide 8 of “1st Grade Subtraction”.
10. Solve Word Problems
Sarah has 5 pencils. Cam takes away 3 of them. How many pencils does Sarah
have?
5-3=2
11. Universal Design
This lesson plan supports Universal Design because:
It presents the information in many different ways
It allows students to organize the information they are learning in a multitude of
different formats.
It keeps students moving, and stimulates interest and excitement.
