Introductory Message
For the facilitator:
Welcome to the Grade 11 General Mathematics Self-Learning Module (SLM) on
Exponential Functions!
This module was collaboratively designed, developed and reviewed by educators both
from public and private institutions to assist you, the teacher or facilitator in helping
the learners meet the standards set by the K to 12 Curriculum while overcoming
their personal, social, and economic constraints in schooling.
This learning resource hopes to engage the learners into guided and independent
learning activities at their own pace and time. Furthermore, this also aims to help
learners acquire the needed 21st century skills while taking into consideration their
needs and circumstances.
In addition to the material in the main text, you will also see this box in the body of
the module:
As a facilitator you are expected to orient the learners on how to use this module.
You also need to keep track of the learners' progress while allowing them to manage
their own learning. Furthermore, you are expected to encourage and assist the
learners as they do the tasks included in the module.
Notes to the Teacher
This contains helpful tips or strategies that
will help you in guiding the learners.
5. 5
For the learner:
Welcome to the Grade 11 General Mathematics Self-Learning Module (SLM) on
Exponential Functions!
The hand is one of the most symbolized part of the human body. It is often used to
depict skill, action and purpose. Through our hands we may learn, create and
accomplish. Hence, the hand in this learning resource signifies that you as a learner
is capable and empowered to successfully achieve the relevant competencies and
skills at your own pace and time. Your academic success lies in your own hands!
This module was designed to provide you with fun and meaningful opportunities for
guided and independent learning at your own pace and time. You will be enabled to
process the contents of the learning resource while being an active learner.
This module has the following parts and corresponding icons:
What I Need to Know This will give you an idea of the skills or
competencies you are expected to learn in the
module.
What I Know This part includes an activity that aims to
check what you already know about the
lesson to take. If you get all the answers
correct (100%), you may decide to skip this
module.

2. Donโt forget to answer What I Know before moving on to the other activities
included in the module.
3. Read the instruction carefully before doing each task.
4. Observe honesty and integrity in doing the tasks and checking your answers.
5. Finish the task at hand before proceeding to the next.
6. Return this module to your teacher/facilitator once you are through with it.
If you encounter any difficulty in answering the tasks in this module, do not
hesitate to consult your teacher or facilitator. Always bear in mind that you are
not alone.

What I Need to Know
This module was designed and written with you in mind. It is here to help you
master illustrating Exponential Functions. The scope of this module permits it to be
used in many different learning situations. The language used recognizes the diverse
vocabulary level of students. The lessons are arranged to follow the standard
sequence of the course. But the order in which you read them can be changed to
correspond with the textbook you are now using.
This module presents the lesson in the following outline:
1. Review: Properties of Exponents
2. Solving exponential equations
3. Solving exponential inequalities
4. Solving problems involving exponential functions
After going through this module, you are expected to:
1. solve exponential equations;
2. solve exponential inequalities; and
3. solve problems involving exponential functions
8. 8
What I Know
Find how much you already know about the topic in this module. Take note of the
items that you were not able to answer correctly and find the right answer as you go
through this module.
A. Determine whether each of the following expression is an exponential equation,
exponential inequality or none of these.

What is It
Solving Exponential Equation
One โ to โ one Property of Exponential Functions will be used in solving
exponential equations.
One to one Property of Exponential Functions
If ๐ฅ1 โ ๐ฅ2, then ๐๐ฅ1 โ ๐๐ฅ2. Conversely, if ๐๐ฅ1 = ๐๐ฅ2then ๐ฅ1 = ๐ฅ2
Example 1. Solve the equation 4๐ฅโ1
= 16
Solution. Write both sides with 4 as the base.
4๐ฅโ1
= 42
๐ฅ โ 1 = 2
๐ฅ = 2 + 1
๐ฅ = 3
11. 11
Alternate Solution. Write both sides with 2 as the base
(22)๐ฅโ1
= 24
22(๐ฅโ1)
= 24
2(๐ฅ โ 1) = 4
2๐ฅ โ 2 = 4
2๐ฅ = 4 + 2
2๐ฅ = 6
2๐ฅ
2

6
2
๐ฅ = 3
Example 2. Solve the equation 125๐ฅโ1
= 25๐ฅ+3
Solution. Both 125 and 25 can be written using 5 as the base.
(53)๐ฅโ1
= (52)๐ฅ+3
53(๐ฅโ1)
= 52(๐ฅ+3)
3(๐ฅ โ 1) = 2(๐ฅ + 3)
3๐ฅ โ 3 = 2๐ฅ + 6
3๐ฅ โ 2๐ฅ = 6 + 3
๐ฅ = 9
Example 3. Solve 9๐ฅ2
= 3๐ฅ+3
.
Solution. Both 9 and 3 can be written using 3 as the base.
(32)๐ฅ2
= 3๐ฅ+3
32๐ฅ2
= 3๐ฅ+3
2๐ฅ2
= ๐ฅ + 3
2๐ฅ2
โ ๐ฅ โ 3 = 0
(2๐ฅ โ 3)(๐ฅ + 1) = 0
2๐ฅ โ 3 = 0 or ๐ฅ + 1 = 0

Solving Exponential Inequality
Property of Exponential Inequalities
If ๐ > 1, then the exponential function ๐ฆ = ๐๐ฅ
is increasing for all x. This means
that ๐๐ฅ
< ๐๐ฆ
if and only if ๐ฅ < ๐ฆ.
If 0 < ๐ < 1, then the exponential function ๐ฆ = ๐๐ฅ
is decreasing for all x. This
means that ๐๐ฅ
> ๐๐ฆ
if and only if ๐ฅ < ๐ฆ.
Example 4. Solve the inequality 3๐ฅ
< 9๐ฅโ2
Solution. Both 9 and 3 can be written using 3 as the base.
3๐ฅ
< 9๐ฅโ2
3๐ฅ
< (32)๐ฅโ2
3๐ฅ
< 32(๐ฅโ2)
3๐ฅ
< 32๐ฅโ4
Since the base 3 > 1, then the inequality is equivalent to
๐ฅ < 2๐ฅ โ 4 (the direction of inequality is retained)
4 < 2๐ฅ โ ๐ฅ
4 < ๐ฅ
The solution set to the inequality is {๐ฅ โ โ|๐ฅ > 4}
Example 5. Solve the inequality (
1
10
)
๐ฅ+5
โฅ (
1
100
)
3๐ฅ
Solution. Since,
1
100
= (
1
10
)
2
, then we write both sides of the inequality with
1
10
as
the base.

13. 13
Since the base

๐ฅ + 5 โค 6๐ฅ (the direction of the inequality is reversed)

The solution set to the inequality is {๐ฅ โ โ|๐ฅ โฅ 1}

Zn-71, but only
1
256

passed?
Solution. The half โ life of substance can be calculated by the formula ๐(๐ก) = ๐0 (
1

)
๐ก

where ๐(๐ก) =quantity of the substance remaining
๐0 = initial quantity of the substance
