Great dramas were produced in Athens as early in the early in the 5th
century BC. The famous writers of tragedies are Aeschylus, Sophocles,
and Euripides.
Comedies, on the other hands, are their way to comment and criticize
their government and politicians. The artists enjoy a remarkable freedom
of speech as they criticize their government policies and politicians
means of jokes and puns. The famous Greek comic playwright or writer
was Aristophanes. He also wrote comedies about powerful women.
Plays were performed outdoors at festivals honoring the god Dionysus
in a competition sponsored by the respective city-state. Thousands of
people packed the theater. Each author presented three tragedies,
followed by a semi-comic play featuring satyrs (mythical half-man, half-
animal beings).
