Million Dollar Arm Sociological Theory
Million Dollar Arm is a film based on the true story of where "a sports agent stages an unconventional recruitment strategy to get talented Indian
cricket players to play Major League Baseball" (Anonymous). The film shows the sociological theories of Social Conflict, Symbolic Interaction, and
Structural Functional. The movie shows both Indian and American societies which provides good examples of sociological theories applied. J.B.
Bernstein is the one who thought of the idea to search for cricket players in India to train them to become baseball players. After searching long
enough, he finds his two Million Dollar Arm contestant winners, Dinesh Patel and Rinku Singh. Turns out, they do not like to play cricket. The boys
and Mr. Bernstein leave to America along with the translator whom loves baseball, Amit. They left their villages and entered a world where they did

The symbolism of family interaction is played throughout the movie. With Dinesh and Rinku winning the contest, they had to leave their families to go
to America. Mr. Bernstein promises Rinku's mom to take good care of him in America. However, Mr. Bernstein does not quite much attention to them,
he only takes them to practice but does not stay to watch. Rinku mentions he doesn't think that Mr. Bernstein does not like how they play due to the
fact he never stays to watch them nor interacts with them much. Families are there to support one another but Mr. Bernstein does not show that in the
beginning. Later, he learned that he must support them during practices, the way a father should. With the support of Mr. Bernstein, they start to do

The Billy Beane Case Study
The Billy Beane Case Study
1.Based on the "Billy Beane: Changing the Game" case, explain how and why the Oakland A's economic situation after 1995 shaped its:
a)Compensation strategies
In the world of major league baseball, the Oakland A's defied the laws of baseball economics. The team spent only $34 million (the 2nd lowest
payroll) had won 102 games and lost only 60 in 2001. On top of this, they finished first in their division and made the playoffs. Major baseball teams
would hire high school players rather than college players. This made high school players costly. The Oakland A's strategy is to hire college players
to save on resources. They argued that college players have already gained substantial exposure and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Sabermetrics is a systematic statistical approach in evaluating teams and players. Based on this science it was found out that this basis for judging the
performance of the player should be on–base percentage. The Oakland A's recruitment would prioritize college players rather than high school
players. This was due to the fact that college players have already played more games against better competition. Beane was convinced with the fact
that "a young player" is not what he looks like, or what he might become, but what he has done. The bottom line is what the player has produced in
college. Beane and DePodesta believed that they could forecast future performance of college players more efficiently than high school ones.
Another staffing strategy is the case of Scott Hatteberg, Hatteberg plays with the Boston Red Sox's. He was injured and was never signed up by the
Boston Red Sox's. The Oakland A's did not waste time and hired Hatteberg. The Oakland A's done this because Hatteberg has an on base scoring
record. According to the Oakland A's, Hatteberg filled up what was missing in the team.
c)Training and development strategies
Batting average was the norm adopted by the other baseball teams. Although training for Oakland was focused on the players ability to obtain on base
scoring, the team relied more on selecting player by their on–base percentages. According to sabermetrics model, teams always win with players having

Payroll In Major League Sports
Most people think that more money means more success, but that is not always the case in major league sports. In the MLB, some of the teams with
higher payrolls don't do nearly as well as some of the teams who have small payrolls. Some think that the game is all about money now, but others
think that it is still fair despite the differences in payroll. Major–League Baseball teams differ greatly in payroll, and its effects on their record vary.
Major–League Baseball teams have large differences in payrolls. While there are teams that have payrolls of over 200 million like the Dodgers and
Yankees, there are also teams who have less than 50 million like the Marlins and the Astros. The differences in payroll cause blood to boil between
teams ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
"In fact, six of the teams with among the lowest 10 payrolls are within six games of a playoff berth" (Nightengale). There is also one team who
was in first place, yet had one of the lowest payrolls. That team is the Kansas City Royals, with the tenth lowest payroll at 94.2 million
(Nightengale). The Commissioner of baseball, Bud Selig, was "euphoric that massive payrolls no longer guarantee success" (Nightengale). For
example, there was one team in the top five of payroll that qualified for playoffs while the other four did not. In the 2015 season, the Houston
Astros, who have one of the smallest payrolls in the MLB, are sitting on top of their division and looking to make a run at the playoffs. The Tampa
Bay Rays are another example of how a team who isn't paid as well can have a .500 season. Additionally, the Pittsburgh Pirates are 1 in 5 teams who
have a lower payroll this year and yet are still having a huge winning season. If it weren't for the fact that the Cardinals are beating everyone in sight,

Essay on The History of Baseball
The History of Baseball
Baseball in America is about as common as alcohol in college , it is everywhere and participated by everyone. Children and adults play baseball in
small towns and large cities and professionals play it throughout the country. The game of baseball is America's pastime and it popularity is enormous.
The beginning of the 20th century between the 1930's sparked the emergence of baseball and it's members as nationally popular . There was many

A National Commission ,which had members from both leagues, was established to enforce the rules made between the two leagues. The two leagues
battle against one another , in attendance and popularity , during the following year. In 1903 , the two leagues decided to play a best of nine series
between the winner from the National League and the winner from the American League. The series " was a financial success for the owners"(4)and
players and it was a popular success with the fans. The Boston team from the American League won the first world series in 1903 and the New
York Giants from the National League won 1905. In 1904 , the National League choose not to play the world series because they did not want do
anything to help the American League. This decision brought much criticism to the National League by fans , sportswriters , and players , so the
National League decided to play the next year but in a seven game series instead. The National League winner in 1906 caused great controversy in

Essay On MLB Draft
The Show It has been said that "people learn from mistakes" (Roth 21) by prestigious and successful individuals such as Dr. Bernard Roth, in an
attempt to provoke people to chase their dreams despite any mistakes or obstacles. The failure of becoming eligible for the MLB draft this year is a
colossal setback for players interested in being drafted. Although this is considered a failing in society's eyes, these players have a chance to learn
from there mistakes and use that knowledge to eventually get drafted in a following year. Possibly the most substantial issue that most of these
athletes had to overcome would be lacking important knowledge necessary to provide a respectable run at the MLB draft. The lack of knowledge can
be broken up into 3 aspects: beginning with a bad plan, having unrealistic expectations, and coasting in the baseball portion. All of these factors
contribute to teaching the athletes who failed this year how to succeed next year. To begin with, athletes were doomed from the start if they did not
have good workout and eating plans, along with good time management skills. According to a freshman pitcher at Northeastern Junior College,
interested in the MLB draft, "I found it difficult to find a way to balance: practice, eating ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Now that these players have more experience under their belt they will have a better possibility of getting drafted because they will be prepared with
an excellent plan, have a better idea at what is and is not achievable and why, and they will not coast if they are serious about making a serious run at
the MLB draft. This was a goal for many young athletes this year and even though failure was the outcome this time, these hungry athletes will strive

Recruiting In Michael Lewis Moneyball
"That's why you play the game" is a saying my grandpa likes to use whenever there is an upset or an unexpected outcome. In the novel Moneyball by
Michael Lewis, the Oakland Athletics baseball team has had a tremendous season. Their manager, Billy Beane, discovered a new way to recruit
players. Beane believed that this new way of recruiting can not only be used in baseball, but in all sports. Lewis demonstrated the argument of Beane's
new way of recruiting when he implemented stories of amature or rookie players who became successes. The argument stated by Lewis is that in
order to build the best team possible, you have to follow Beane's way of recruiting that uses mathematics. Beane himself was a professional ball
player; right out of high school, he signed with the New York Mets. As time went on and new recruits joined the team, Billy felt that he had lost his
talent and he became discouraged. After he lost all of his confidence, he became a talent scout for the Oakland A's. Billy began to use mathematics as
a new way to recruit players for the A's. Many baseball teams ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The two of them analyzed everything about a player such as how many times they have been walked, base averages, etc. to find talented players
most franchises overlooked. By doing so, they were able to recruit players for the Oakland A's inexpensively and build a talented team. Another
tactic he used was finding multiple players who can match the ability of one player. For example, they had to let Jason Giambi go because they
simply could not afford him anymore. Instead of replacing him with someone who matched his talent, he found multiple players who could complete
Giambi's job for less money. Throughout the season Beane traded players this way to build the best team he could. He succeeded, for the A's went on
a 20 game winning streak, a new league

The Pros And Cons Of MLB Winter Meetings
The MLB Winter Meetings are a time for owners, general managers and reporters to all be in the same place at the same time. The Winter
Meetings are notorious for big signings and trades that will happen in the course of the five day span that the meetings last. Each year, the
meetings are in a different city and this year, it's Nashville, Tennessee. Some of the big free agents such as David Price and Zack Greinke had
already signed prior to the meetings. But there are big names that hadn't signed such as Ben Zobrist. The Winter Meetings are also a time for big
names to be traded. Players such as Jose Fernandez, Starlin Castro, Shelby Miller and Carlos Gonzalez are just some of the big names to be thrown

The same night, another trade was struck between the Arizona Diamondbacks and the Atlanta Braves. The Braves sent the young stud Shelby Miller,
who recorded a 3.02 ERA in 2015, to Arizona in exchange for top D–Backs prospect, Dansby Swanson and two other prospects. This move proved that
the Dbacks want to go all in for 2016. There are still many players on the market who have yet to be signed, primarily outfielders. Outfielders such
as Jason Heyward, Yoenis Cespedes, Alex Gordon and Justin Upton have yet to reach deals with teams. The Giants, after losing out on the major free
agents and trade candidates that they wanted are the frontrunners to sign the 2015 World Champion Alex Gordon of the Kansas City Royals. The
meetings conclude on December 10th, but the offseason won't stop. Many deals will continue to be made all the way up until January before spring
training. The current rumor now is that Jason Heyward will choose between the Cubs, Angels and Cardinals. An outfield consisting of Heyward and
Mike Trout would be one of the best defensive outfields in all of baseball because they are both spectacular

How To Win Moneyball Analysis
"Moneyball: The Art of Winning an Unfair Game" by Michael Lewis tells the story of the Oakland A's, a baseball team that was economically at a
disadvantage, and how they relied on statistics to compete with wealthier teams. At the time, the process of selecting players was strongly based on
usual statistics such has batting average, RBIs, stolen bases, and number of hits. The Oakland A's General Manager, Billy Beane, changed the game by
focusing on Sabermetrics, an unconventional sports analysis that valued the less obvious statistics of players, such as on–base and slugging percentage,
that indirectly contribute to overall wins for the team. With this change in standards for his players, Billy Beane was able to sign players at much
lower costs because traditional managers overlooked their values.
Billy Beane hired Paul DePodesta as his assistant to incorporate sabermetrics as the two were inspired by the idea of baseball analysis. Even with the ...

Sabermetrics successfully undermined conventional ideas of player values when the A's lost their three highest economically valued players. Jason
Isringhausen, for example, was considered so because as a closing pitcher he had a high number of saves in a game. After studying number of saves
as a statistic, Billy Beane and Paul DePodesta discovered that saves are not often determined by the closing pitcher. As a result, Beane was able to
take the high amount of money he made from this trade and use it to invest in his own team, and he showed that he could still win without "high
value" players. Still, like any other statistic, there were outliers. Jason Giambi was another huge snatch for teams. Even though his high value came
from his physical attributes and skills, he also had a high rate of creating runs and was a loss for the Oakland

Essay Major League BaseballВґs Culture
Baseball is spread across the United States and has become a part of some cities culture. Cultures stretch from the newer teams of the west and the old
school teams of the east. There are teams that have been around since baseball started and new teams that were made within the last 20 years. Major
League Baseball's culture differs across the United States depending on where you're located. There are trends between cultures based on location and
how long the team has been around. These cultures are different in many, but all have a common similarity. All baseball cultures revolve around a

surrounds a team. A team at the other end of the spectrum is theSt. Louis Cardinals. They have built their team through their farm system like I
mention earlier, also known as the minor leagues. Many of their players are "home grown" talent as they call it and the fans are very close to their
players, unlike the money driven stars, the fans feel like the young players are growing up and their involved with it. An example of this is on the
teams Facebook page the team posted a thank you to two of their home grown stars that they traded away, and the top comment reads this, "Freese
will always be a cardinal in the hearts of true fans of STL(St. Louis) baseball." The second highest comment posted is this, "Freese will always be
the homegrown talent. Best of luck to both of them in Anaheim." The cardinal fans love their players and care about wining, but there is more to it
to them, they feel a part of the growing of David Freese and other players like him. Teams like the Cardinals, Yankees, and the Red Sox don't have to
worry too much about bringing in fans like small market teams. Teams that do have to try to get fans to come to the games like the Tampa Bay Rays
or the Seattle Mariners. The Rays

В·Carson Fulmer – The White Sox have three strong prospects for their future. They are going to play out the string in 2017 looking at which of
these pitchers steps forward. Fulmer is one of the more intriguing of this trio of pitching prospects. Much of his minor league difficulties have
centered on control issues. Too many free passes have lead to a balloon in his ERA. At times, he has used his mid–90s fastball to mow down hitters,
while at other times he can't seem to locate with consistency. Fulmer had tossed 6 innings with only three Ks out of the bullpen since his call up, but
nailed 9 San Francisco hitters in his first start. He has his future in front of him, and his 3 hit, 1 run performance in his first start turned the heads of
the White Sox brass. Look for Fulmer to pitch his final opportunities with a sense of purpose. В·Lucas Giolito – Giolito's fantasy numbers in his first
four starts have accounted for two masterful performances, sandwiched in the middle of two defensive collapses by his fielders. He allowed 1

starts, the White Sox defense fell apart. It led to a momentary loss of concentration against San Francisco, leading to 4 walks. Giolito still gave up only
three hits in 5 plus innings of work, so the potential is obviously there. Giolito may have the

Billy Beane And Moneyball
"Moneyball: The Art of Winning an Unfair Game," by Michael Lewis is a book that discusses how the Oakland Athletics became a baseball
powerhouse despite having one of the smallest budgets. The man who is the architect of this franchise is Billy Beane, an ex–player turned general
manager. Beane was a player who had all of the physical tools old school scouts look for, however he turned out to be a disappointment; instead of
falling into the trap other general managers fell into, he looked for a competitive edge, a new market inefficiency. He was not afraid to go against the
norm, he made a team with the second smallest budget into a powerhouse, and he inspired an entire new era of successful general managers, as well as

One of the most notable executives inspired by Beane is Theo Epstein, a Yale graduate who talked with Beane as much as possible when he was the
assistant general manager in the Red Sox franchise and due to his frequent conversations with Beane, Epstein becomes obsessed with high on–base
percentage players, such as Kevin Youkilis (Lewis 211). Inspired by Billy Beane, Theo Epstein leads theBoston Red Sox to two World Series titles in
nine years, placing a heavy emphasis on on–base percentage; The Red Sox never placed below second in annual on–base percentage during Epstein's
tenure as general manager, and now Epstein is recreating the same philosophy in Chicago (ESPN). Another baseball general manager who was
tremendously influenced by Billy Beane was Andrew Friedman; facing a tight budget in Tampa Bay much like Beane in Oakland, he drafted
many college players and he led a mediocre franchise to four playoff appearances through following Billy Beane's philosophy (Vice Sports). The
Pittsburgh Pirates and their general manager, Neal Huntington have taken Beane's philosophy to a whole different level; he hired people out of
Ivy League schools just like Beane, however Huntington hired many more specific analysts. Huntington hired Baseball Prospectus's Dan Fox to
build the structure of their proprietary database, while also being an analyst for the Pirates, also Mike Fitzgerald was hired as an analyst who even
traveled with the team on the road; over the years the Pirates' analytical team built a relationship with the players and the coaching staff, to the point
where the analytical group became a key part of the team, even more so than the Oakland A's and Billy Beane (Sloan Sports Conference). Billy
Beane's impact has spread even beyond baseball; it has spread to soccer, american football, and basketball, one example of a soccer team following

Compared to most other professional sports leagues in the United States, there is a lot of financial disparity between small market and large market
teams in Major League Baseball. Moneyball: The Art of Winning an Unfair Game is a novel about how an unlikely general manager, Billy Beane, used
unconventional statistical analysis to enable the Oakland Athletics to outplay much wealthier teams in the league. The problem faced by Beane and the
Athletics was competing against large–market teams that were able to afford the services of the "best players" in the league. Through the use of

Baseball is a true "team sport".
Sabermetrics, the statistical method applied by Bean and his acquaintance Paul DePodesta deviated from these overused and overvalued measures, and
focused on team players, not volatile superstars (Moneyball). Sabermetrics revolved around the analysis of undervalued statistics–primarily on–base
percentage, the number of times a player swings at the first pitch, and the average number of pitches per at–bat a player sees (Moneyball). With this
tactic, Billy Beane and the Oakland Athletics were able to win many more games than they would have if they were constrained by overvalued
players. Beane was able to use this ingenious method of statistical analysis to discern the unique talents of undervalued players that did not meet the
statistical criteria of big market teams. With a very specifically assembled team, whereby some players were even forced to switch positions, the
Oakland Athletics had seemed to overcome the odds.
A prime example of the potential success of sabermetrics was seen in a player named Scott Hatteberg. Hatteberg spent most of his career lingering
around the Boston Red Sox organization as a catcher–both in the minor leagues and in the major leagues (Moneyball). Hatteberg was seen as a very
average catcher and hitter throughout the big leagues. He did his job well enough, however he did not stand out in popular statistical categories such as
homeruns and RBIs. Unacknowledged by the Red Sox, however,

Should major league baseball games be shorter or longer? In my opinion they should become shorter like 7 innings instead of 9. The average

The MLB should make games shorter by making a rule where managers can make pitching changes only 2 times an inning. Major league baseball is

Player Recruitment Process In Michael Lewis's Moneyball
Michael Lewis's Moneyball highlights the management of the baseball team Oakland A's by Billy Beane as the team pushes through its 2002 season.
Moneyball is an underdog story as shown by the A's tight budget and the struggle to keep up with other teams whose player budget was much higher
than that of the A's.
Lewis begins his book by stating that the A's were winning a lot more games than expected with their tight budget. Lewis found that the A's manager,
Billy Beane, used a method of recruiting undervalued players that analyzed statistics that other teams typically overlooked. Beane's method of player
recruitment would set the standard of recruiting in the future.
After showing that Billy Beane revolutionized the player recruitment process, Lewis delves into how Beane went about doing so. Beane referenced
largely to what were known as sabermetrics, which was a fan made statistics system that determined a player's abilities to succeed that had not yet
been accepted by the Major Leagues. In Beane's studies of sabermetrics, he honed in on a sabermetrician by the name of Bill James, who aids him in
his recruitment process. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Although the Marlins finished in third place in the NL East last year, Miami still finished a full 19 games out of first place.
In the race for the Wild Card, the deficit was even higher. By the end of the season, the Marlins were 26 games back.

The offseason was a
rather quiet one for the Marlins. Miami seems content moving forward with its young cast of players. The Marlins' only moves were a few free
agency additions to the pitching staff. Their biggest haul was the signing of Wei–Yin Chen to a five–year, $80 million contract, while the Marlins also
signed pitcher Edwin Jackson, who could bounce back from bullpen duties in 2015 to earn a rotation spot. Jackson's ERA as a starting pitcher

Unfortunately for the Phillies, they finished below the Braves last year in the NL East. Philadelphia wasn't only last in the division, the Phillies also
had the worst record in MLB at 63–99. However, the dreadful season earned Philadelphia the first pick in this year's MLB Draft in June.

The
Phillies rebuild began when they finally decided to dismantle the old core that won the World Series in 2008. From that title team, the Phillies traded
the middle infielders who began their careers with the organization. Philadelphia traded shortstop Jimmy Rollins after the 2014 season and second
baseman Chase Utley in August of last season. Both players were traded to the Los Angeles Dodgers and brought back a few pitching prospects. The
Phillies biggest return came from trading pitcher Cole Hamels to the Texas Rangers in an eight–player deal at the deadline last year. Philadelphia sent
Hamels and reliever Jake Diekman to the Rangers for pitchers Matt Harrison and Jake Thompson, minor league pitching prospects Jared Eickhoff and
Alec Asher, catcher Jorge Alfaro and outfielder Nick Williams. However, Harrison has battled back issues, so his castoff was merely a way for the
Rangers to get the contract off their books.

As this offseason began, it was new Phillies general manager Matt Klentak's job to continue the
rebuild. Klentak's first move was trading closer Ken Giles and shortstop Jonathan Arauz to the Houston Astros for former No. 1 overall pick Mark
Appel and pitchers Thomas Eshelman, Brett Oberholtzer, Vincent Velasquez and Harold Arauz. The Phillies' deals have replenished their farm system
after years of being trade deadline buyers depleted it. While most of their prospects continue to develop in the minor leagues, a few could contribute to
the Phillies this year.

In the film Moneyball, there are many different psychological concepts throughout it. The Oscar–nominated film is a visual adaptation of the book

of their general manager Billy Beane, who decides to play professional ball instead of going to Stanford University. Later Beane becomes a general
manager of a low budget team. Beane, played by Brad Pitt, has one of the cheapest budgets in baseball and must take a different approach, then most

A well–defined problem is a problem with the clear description of the start state, goal state, and the progressions for reaching the goal state. The
approach Billy takes to make this happen is by changing the way people view the road to success in baseball. To do this, Billy used Bill James'
algorithm to signs players he believes are undervalued by the league. In the movie, there is a scene where Billy is asking all the scouts, "what's the
problem?" The scouts all respond by telling Billy the team needs to replace Giambi, Damon, and Isringhausen. However, Billy knows that's not the real
problem. The real problem that the scouts couldn't figure out was that Billy was trying figure out how to build a team on a limited budget that can

Things don't start to turn around for the team until Billy trades clubhouse problem, Jeremy Giambi, and all–star first baseman, Carlos Pena. Billy didn't

Does this argument excuse any responsibility on the part of MLB?
Do you see any rationalizations for the steroid use or the lack of an effective policy on its use in MLB?
What is the responsibility of MLB and the players to young people who are using steroids?
Discuss the Canseco allegations that MLB just wanted revenue and turned a blind eye to steroid use. Apply the various social responsibility theories to
this point and discuss the flaws in this competitive model
No! The MLB could not argue that it is not an enforcement agent, due to the fact that Congress was already investigating all sports, and found out at
every level, drugs were being used. Chairman Staggers did not want the information leaked out to the public being worried that it would increase the
amount of teenagers using steroids. The Committee Chairman went to "the ...Baseball Commissioner Bowie Kuhn to consider instituting tough
penalties and testing, and he trusted Commissioner Kuhn to do that" (Jennings, 2012, p. 139). In spite of this, three decades went by and the MLB did
not regulate itself as agreed, and not one drug test was administered. This caused an ethical dilemma. It was not until the early 90's that the current

Summary Of Billy Beane's Leadership Style
Leader sometimes need to take difficult decisions, especially when a team member is not performing consistently. When Brand is required to transfer
a player, Beane asks Brand to be transparent and respectful, because players deserve it. Brand has never transferred a player but on Beane's coaching,
he is perform this difficult task with sensitivity. Beane himself doesn't shy away from a difficult conversation. Another scene that comes to mind is
Beane's conversation with David Justice (Stephen Bishop), during batting practice. Justice has been on the team for a long time and is considered to be
a "star". He thinks he's better than the rest, and feels really special. Beane's conversation reminds him that he should contribute more, describes... Show

Leaders who can identify and execute new ways of operating, will be the winners. The complexities that Beane faced ensured that he left his comfort
zone to confront issues that he previously wouldn't face. Beane usually didn't interact with the players. He realized that he needed to change, when he
sensed the disconnect on the team. Talking to the players, engaging with them, articulating his vision, encouraging them was a major change that
Beane made in his leadership style. There is often a big gap in the performance of high–performing and average leaders. Using an outcomes–based
development approach, much like Beane, average leaders may be able to close reduce this gap by half, thus impacting the organization immeasurably.
While all individuals have the innate potential to be a leader of some kind, not everyone can be a great leader. Just as an athlete's physical
characteristics define the sport that best fits his or her abilities, an individual's cognitive abilities and hard–wired personality strengths define their most
effective type of leadership

Essay on “Analyze, Don’t Summarize” by Michael Berube
Essay on "Analyze, Don't Summarize" by Michael Berube Berube analogize student's essays and watching sports commentary on ESPN, because
students tend to summarize in their essays instead of analyzing it. Berube uses an example as to what he is trying to explain that the world of sports is
metacommentary and no one actually summarizes on how the game is being played. Instead they analyze, they just point out the important part of the
game. In the tenth paragraph he quotes "Well, Tony let me point out that last night, the Red Sox swept the Tigers and crept to within three games of the
Yankees." And then he quotes that "...I'm just pointing out that the Sox won 3–1, on a four hitter by Schilling, while the Yanks blew another... Show

This is why sports monocommentary is supposed to be doing –arguing about the game not just "Chattering" like he says. The author expresses the
difference between analyzing and summarizing simply by contradicting himself with the rest of the essay, because he mentioned he wants his papers to
be arguable just as sports talks should be. Berube says that sports talks' analogy is useful simply as a handy way of distinguishing between
summary and analysis. "When a student paper cites textual evidence so compelling and unusual that it makes me go back and read passage in a
question (good!) ..."he quotes and a "suggests that a novel conclusion fails to resolve the questions and tensions raised by the rest of the narrative or
makes claim that are directly contradicted by the literary text its self (bad!)..." (page 304) The significance of his point that "an observation is not a
thesis means" because a thesis is usually an arguable piece of writing and in most cases factual and an observation is what is perceived by one at the
moment meaning only you can base an opinion of what you just saw. In this paragraph Berube emphasizes his point on analyzing, summarizing, and
sports talks.
The above paragraph shows the author's black and white thinking about his student's papers. He believes that there are only two choices; one is the

The book Moneyball by Michael Lewis is about a former major league baseball player who became the manager of the Oakland A's. It tells the
story of how he led the team to success despite their low budget by using computer based analytics to draft players. With the help of Bill James, the
Oakland A's came up with a new plan based on statistics to draft players. He went after players nobody wanted due to their low budget and his new
plan. Billy led the Oakland Athletics to a successive win seasons by changing the way he measured players. He abandoned the traditional 5 "tool" the

Despite all these limiting factors it did not stop him from leading the team to a 20 consecutive wins. The Oakland A's were different from other teams.
They did not let anything stop them, they did extraordinary things. As their salary decreased they got better, this is very unusual. The new approach;
sabermetrics helped the team change and improve in a short about of time. This new approach caused problems for the Oakland A's. It caused problems
with the team; Billy and the Oakland scouts. Some people and teams hate sabermetrics and think it does not help with winning.
The new approach helped the Oakland A's succeed because it was ethical. Billy Beane used numbers to evaluate the players. Numbers matter but can be
misleading. By looking closely and understanding what he was doing Billy made good decisions based on numbers. The old approach was unethical
because it misjudged the players. In the "old fashion statistics of the players some key important factors were left out. For instance the old statistics did
not mention the number of walks a batter earned. This left out information misleads coach's judgments and resulted in scouts undervaluing players.
Just like in baseball there are large and small businesses. Businesses have to make decisions, decisions that will help the business in the long run. By
using analytics business can measure their performance to know where they stand financially and economically. Numbers are very important in a

He had to tackle many obstacles including a chronic illness. Without letting the illness stop him, Griffith battled his way to the minor leagues

given the nickname "Old Fox". As a driven pitcher, Griffith did all he could to stay in the league. He was committed to his goals and passion for

The Change of Baseball Over the Years Essay
From the sandlot to stadiums seating over fifty thousand people, the game of baseball has provided people of all ages with a common foundation; a
sport we can all call our national pastime. Though its concept sounds simple, a game using a ball and a bat, millions of people all over the world have
sought involvement in it by either playing at some level, or just sitting back and watching a game. With professional baseball attracting more and more
fans each season, no one knows what limits this sport can reach. For the time being though, it has been a real "home run."

A man by the name of Alexander Cartwright, a sportsman from New York started the first organized baseball club, the
Knickerbocker Base Ball Club of New York (30). Along with establishing the first baseball club, he added a set of written rules, which are extremely
parallel to the ones of today (30). Some of these rules, stated in 1845, include, the distance between all the bases being ninety feet, and having nine
players on each side. No longer would players be plugging runners, but now they would be tagging them with the ball. The rule of forcing a player
out at a base was also introduced in 1854. Finally, other rules changed over time such as the length of the game change to nine innings and the
distance from the pitchers found to home plate now being sixty feet. Another major landmark in the history of baseball, the invention of the newspaper
box score, occurred in 1845 as well. With all these new advances, the game naturally began to spread across the country (32).
Not only did the famous Civil War (1861–1865) spread our nation into the north and south, but on a positive note, it also spread the sport of baseball

confederate prisoners would watch (47). Something similar to a domino effect started as the prisoners and soldiers came home from

Should Major League Baseball Impose Salary Caps for Athletes?
There are many professional athletes who are overpaid a tremendous amount of money. For example, in 2013 the New York Yankees third basemen
Alex Rodriguez's salary was $29,000,000. Another athlete that was overpaid was the Philadelphia Phillies first basemen Ryan Howard. During the
2011 postseason, he tore his Achilles tendon and had to miss most of 2012 season because he was on the disabled list. He had a salary of $20,000,000
for 2012 and only played 71 games out of 162. Major League Baseball should impose a salary cap on athletes because athletes are being overpaid, they
are signing big contracts, and some are not performing well.

Quotes For Lord Capulet

The Boston Red Sox and the New York Yankees play at least 22 games a year just against each other, not including playoffs. They are also the largest
rival baseball team of all times. Romeo and Juliet could be portrayed using the Capulets as Boston and the Montagues as New York. At one of the
games between them taking place in Fenway Park, Romeo and Juliet meet and hit it off right away. Although their rivals, they do not realize who they
are until after the game. In my favorite scene, Act 4 Scene 2, Lord Capulet plays a very important part by talking to Juliet about the wedding with Paris.

After her speech, he goes straight to business face. If I directed a play of this, then I would direct the person playing Lord Capulet to walk around

cares about is what is in it for him.
Staging is just one element in the theater genre, but it is a very important one. If I had the chance to direct Romeo and Juliet in the modernized
version I created, then the lights for Act 4 Scene 2 would be bright, like fluorescent lights were everywhere. Even if Lord Capulet was not holding
a phone that lights up, we would need to signify that he is using one and what he is doing with it. That would need it's own lighting. The camera
angle if we ever filmed it would move from place to place. I believe that it would start on Lord Capulet and then everyone else would answer while
he is on his phone. The camera when Juliet enters would be focused on her, maybe with her running into the room where her father is. All of the
actors need costumes to make the whole scene come alive. Lord Capulet would be wearing a suit, black with a light blue undershirt and a red tie
would be added to this to make the audience believe that he had just come from work. The suit will also show that even at home, Lord Capulet is all
about the money.

A more visible example of rules changing to meet the cultural needs of a society is one that we see in our everyday lives while watching professional
baseball or MLB. The Major League Baseball is divided into two leagues which are the National league and the American League. The American
League has a designated hitter while the National League does not allow designated hitters within their rules. Rules do not conflict when teams of their
respected leagues play against each other but when a team from the National League has to play against a team from the American League, rules
conflict. Teams must now play according to home field rules. That means if the American League team happens to be the home team, rules apply for
the allowance of a designated hitter. Back in the schoolyard, basketball rules are arbitrary all the time. Rules are less strict in the schoolyard
compared to rules in the NBA or in college basketball. Players also cut some slack on less talented players who may constantly commit "travels" or
"double dribbles". Sports don't exist in a cultural vacuum but the world of sports is very much like the world of masculinity. During the course we
watched a video of "Killing Us Softly", which has to do with the study of gender representation in advertising. It reviews if and how the image of
women in advertising has changed over the last 20 years. With

But this was not enough to insure financial stability as the league expanded too readily and rapidly to thirty teams. Currently baseball is struggling,
especially in the cities home to small market teams. Thus why Commissioner Bud Selig and the owners recently approved a motion to implement
contraction, or the elimination of franchises from the league, most likely of the Montreal Expos and the Minnesota Twins. According to Selig, the
teams facing contraction were chosen based on three principle characteristics: a small fan base, a small total revenue generated over the past couple
of seasons and the smallest significance to the game. In this case, the writer who chooses to employ exigence is ESPN: the Magazine columnist Jim
Caple. Formerly a sports columnist for the Saint Paul Pioneer Press from 1989 to 2000 and a diehard Twins fan, Caple wrote his article entitled
"Bud's Twin Killing" in the November 26th issue of ESPN: the Magazine. Using the three main artistic appeals as defined by Sophocles, Caple sets
out to expose why Commissioner Selig wants to dissolve the Twins, how his reasoning is inappropriately influenced and, above all, why the Twins
should remain in Minnesota.
Ethos is usually the first artistic appeal found in any piece of writing. Caple's article is no exception to this age old rule. Ethos, or credibility and

Argument Essay Draft 2
To Hit or Not to Hit In 1973, Major League Baseball accepted Rule 5.11, also known as the Designated Hitter (DH) rule. This rule allows a player,
who does not play a defensive position, to hit in place of the pitcher. The rule was created because pitchers, most of whom are notoriously bad hitters,
were basically a free out for the opposing team. However, for some ungodly reason, the new DH rule was only established in one of the two leagues in
the MLB. As a result, the American League, the league using the DH rule, has consistently produced higher batting averages since 1973 than the
National League. When two teams from different leagues play each other, they... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
By expanding the DH rule to the National League, the MLB could create and extend more careers for players just like Martinez. Many people against
the designated hitter believe having a DH ruins the integrity of the game. They think that teams should need to strategize by having pitchers bunt
runners to the next base or force managers to make the tough decision of when to substitute a hitter for the pitcher. People opposed to the DH rule
believe it is wrong to change the rules because this game has been played the same way for more than 100 years. This is both a closed minded and
ancient way of thinking. Rules are meant to evolve and change over time to adjust to the times. The days of sacrificing at–bats to bunt runners over are
over. The sacrifice bunt has been virtually destroyed by new statistics and metrics that show how inefficient it is. The game is in need of more
offense and expanding the DH rule to both leagues solves that problem and is a necessary evolvement to the sport. Over the past few years, pitching
has been dominant and the officials in the MLB offices have looked for new ways to increase offensive production. For the 2017 season, the MLB has
attempted to fix this problem by implementing a new type of baseball with a harder exterior and smaller laces which increase the distance and reduce
drag (also increasing distance) of batted balls. As a result, home run totals across the league have increased

segment on the New York Yankees is no different, as he uses a variety of different sources. For example, when explaining the Yankees "elitist"
policies, Oliver shows a commercial for the New York Yankees Legends Club, which is for wealthy season ticket holders. By using this source, he
backs up his claim on how elitist the Yankees are when compared to other sports teams. Oliver's use of the three artistic proofs was overall very
effective and funny, which is especially important towards his audience. The show's media spectrum falls mainly on the Internet, where about 94% of
Oliver's demographic watches his show, while the audience 's' top interests are entertainment, media, famous people and societal issues. When looking
at audience demographics, John Oliver is generally doing an excellent job of using an argument to persuade his

History Of The Polo Grounds
The Polo Grounds. If you're a baseball fan you'll probably know about it because it makes Wrigley Field look cheaply made. The stadium was
known as the bathtub for its oval like look that it gave off and people still remember it to this day. The stadium build in the late 1800's was torn down
in 64' but many people who remember the days the Giants were living in New York.
As stated earlier the Polo Grounds was built in the late 1800's and had four different versions. It originally was an all purpose field but eventually
became the home of the New York Metropolitanbaseball club. When the team disbanded the field became the Giants historic playground of the inside

Million Dollar Arm Sociological Theory

  • 1. Million Dollar Arm Sociological Theory Million Dollar Arm is a film based on the true story of where "a sports agent stages an unconventional recruitment strategy to get talented Indian cricket players to play Major League Baseball" (Anonymous). The film shows the sociological theories of Social Conflict, Symbolic Interaction, and Structural Functional. The movie shows both Indian and American societies which provides good examples of sociological theories applied. J.B. Bernstein is the one who thought of the idea to search for cricket players in India to train them to become baseball players. After searching long enough, he finds his two Million Dollar Arm contestant winners, Dinesh Patel and Rinku Singh. Turns out, they do not like to play cricket. The boys and Mr. Bernstein leave to America along with the translator whom loves baseball, Amit. They left their villages and entered a world where they did not know you can order pizza and have it delivered to your... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The symbolism of family interaction is played throughout the movie. With Dinesh and Rinku winning the contest, they had to leave their families to go to America. Mr. Bernstein promises Rinku's mom to take good care of him in America. However, Mr. Bernstein does not quite much attention to them, he only takes them to practice but does not stay to watch. Rinku mentions he doesn't think that Mr. Bernstein does not like how they play due to the fact he never stays to watch them nor interacts with them much. Families are there to support one another but Mr. Bernstein does not show that in the beginning. Later, he learned that he must support them during practices, the way a father should. • 2. The Billy Beane Case Study The Billy Beane Case Study 1.Based on the "Billy Beane: Changing the Game" case, explain how and why the Oakland A's economic situation after 1995 shaped its: a)Compensation strategies In the world of major league baseball, the Oakland A's defied the laws of baseball economics. The team spent only $34 million (the 2nd lowest payroll) had won 102 games and lost only 60 in 2001. On top of this, they finished first in their division and made the playoffs. Major baseball teams would hire high school players rather than college players. This made high school players costly. The Oakland A's strategy is to hire college players to save on resources. They argued that college players have already gained substantial exposure and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Sabermetrics is a systematic statistical approach in evaluating teams and players. Based on this science it was found out that this basis for judging the performance of the player should be on–base percentage. The Oakland A's recruitment would prioritize college players rather than high school players. This was due to the fact that college players have already played more games against better competition. Beane was convinced with the fact that "a young player" is not what he looks like, or what he might become, but what he has done. The bottom line is what the player has produced in college. Beane and DePodesta believed that they could forecast future performance of college players more efficiently than high school ones. Another staffing strategy is the case of Scott Hatteberg, Hatteberg plays with the Boston Red Sox's. He was injured and was never signed up by the Boston Red Sox's. The Oakland A's did not waste time and hired Hatteberg. The Oakland A's done this because Hatteberg has an on base scoring record. According to the Oakland A's, Hatteberg filled up what was missing in the team. c)Training and development strategies Batting average was the norm adopted by the other baseball teams. Although training for Oakland was focused on the players ability to obtain on base scoring, the team relied more on selecting player by their on–base percentages. • 3. Payroll In Major League Sports Most people think that more money means more success, but that is not always the case in major league sports. In the MLB, some of the teams with higher payrolls don't do nearly as well as some of the teams who have small payrolls. Some think that the game is all about money now, but others think that it is still fair despite the differences in payroll. Major–League Baseball teams differ greatly in payroll, and its effects on their record vary. Major–League Baseball teams have large differences in payrolls. While there are teams that have payrolls of over 200 million like the Dodgers and Yankees, there are also teams who have less than 50 million like the Marlins and the Astros. The differences in payroll cause blood to boil between teams ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... "In fact, six of the teams with among the lowest 10 payrolls are within six games of a playoff berth" (Nightengale). There is also one team who was in first place, yet had one of the lowest payrolls. That team is the Kansas City Royals, with the tenth lowest payroll at 94.2 million (Nightengale). The Commissioner of baseball, Bud Selig, was "euphoric that massive payrolls no longer guarantee success" (Nightengale). For example, there was one team in the top five of payroll that qualified for playoffs while the other four did not. In the 2015 season, the Houston Astros, who have one of the smallest payrolls in the MLB, are sitting on top of their division and looking to make a run at the playoffs. The Tampa Bay Rays are another example of how a team who isn't paid as well can have a .500 season. Additionally, the Pittsburgh Pirates are 1 in 5 teams who have a lower payroll this year and yet are still having a huge winning season. • 5. Essay On MLB Draft The Show It has been said that "people learn from mistakes" (Roth 21) by prestigious and successful individuals such as Dr. Bernard Roth, in an attempt to provoke people to chase their dreams despite any mistakes or obstacles. The failure of becoming eligible for the MLB draft this year is a colossal setback for players interested in being drafted. Although this is considered a failing in society's eyes, these players have a chance to learn from there mistakes and use that knowledge to eventually get drafted in a following year. Possibly the most substantial issue that most of these athletes had to overcome would be lacking important knowledge necessary to provide a respectable run at the MLB draft. The lack of knowledge can be broken up into 3 aspects: beginning with a bad plan, having unrealistic expectations, and coasting in the baseball portion. All of these factors contribute to teaching the athletes who failed this year how to succeed next year. To begin with, athletes were doomed from the start if they did not have good workout and eating plans, along with good time management skills. • 6. Recruiting In Michael Lewis Moneyball "That's why you play the game" is a saying my grandpa likes to use whenever there is an upset or an unexpected outcome. In the novel Moneyball by Michael Lewis, the Oakland Athletics baseball team has had a tremendous season. Their manager, Billy Beane, discovered a new way to recruit players. Beane believed that this new way of recruiting can not only be used in baseball, but in all sports. Lewis demonstrated the argument of Beane's new way of recruiting when he implemented stories of amature or rookie players who became successes. The argument stated by Lewis is that in order to build the best team possible, you have to follow Beane's way of recruiting that uses mathematics. Beane himself was a professional ball player; right out of high school, he signed with the New York Mets. As time went on and new recruits joined the team, Billy felt that he had lost his talent and he became discouraged. After he lost all of his confidence, he became a talent scout for the Oakland A's. Another tactic he used was finding multiple players who can match the ability of one player. For example, they had to let Jason Giambi go because they simply could not afford him anymore. Instead of replacing him with someone who matched his talent, he found multiple players who could complete Giambi's job for less money. This move proved that the Dbacks want to go all in for 2016. There are still many players on the market who have yet to be signed, primarily outfielders. Outfielders such as Jason Heyward, Yoenis Cespedes, Alex Gordon and Justin Upton have yet to reach deals with teams. The Giants, after losing out on the major free agents and trade candidates that they wanted are the frontrunners to sign the 2015 World Champion Alex Gordon of the Kansas City Royals. How To Win Moneyball Analysis "Moneyball: The Art of Winning an Unfair Game" by Michael Lewis tells the story of the Oakland A's, a baseball team that was economically at a disadvantage, and how they relied on statistics to compete with wealthier teams. At the time, the process of selecting players was strongly based on usual statistics such has batting average, RBIs, stolen bases, and number of hits. The Oakland A's General Manager, Billy Beane, changed the game by focusing on Sabermetrics, an unconventional sports analysis that valued the less obvious statistics of players, such as on–base and slugging percentage, that indirectly contribute to overall wins for the team. With this change in standards for his players, Billy Beane was able to sign players at much lower costs because traditional managers overlooked their values. As a result, Beane was able to take the high amount of money he made from this trade and use it to invest in his own team, and he showed that he could still win without "high value" players. At times, he has used his mid–90s fastball to mow down hitters, while at other times he can't seem to locate with consistency. Fulmer had tossed 6 innings with only three Ks out of the bullpen since his call up, but nailed 9 San Francisco hitters in his first start. In his other two starts, the White Sox defense fell apart. It led to a momentary loss of concentration against San Francisco, leading to 4 walks. Billy Beane And Moneyball "Moneyball: The Art of Winning an Unfair Game," by Michael Lewis is a book that discusses how the Oakland Athletics became a baseball powerhouse despite having one of the smallest budgets. The man who is the architect of this franchise is Billy Beane, an ex–player turned general manager. Beane was a player who had all of the physical tools old school scouts look for, however he turned out to be a disappointment; instead of falling into the trap other general managers fell into, he looked for a competitive edge, a new market inefficiency. He was not afraid to go against the norm, he made a team with the second smallest budget into a powerhouse, and he inspired an entire new era of successful general managers, as well as impacting people in other... Inspired by Billy Beane, Theo Epstein leads theBoston Red Sox to two World Series titles in nine years, placing a heavy emphasis on on–base percentage; The Red Sox never placed below second in annual on–base percentage during Epstein's tenure as general manager, and now Epstein is recreating the same philosophy in Chicago (ESPN). Another baseball general manager who was tremendously influenced by Billy Beane was Andrew Friedman; facing a tight budget in Tampa Bay much like Beane in Oakland, he drafted many college players and he led a mediocre franchise to four playoff appearances through following Billy Beane's philosophy (Vice Sports). The Pittsburgh Pirates and their general manager, Neal Huntington have taken Beane's philosophy to a whole different level; he hired people out of Ivy League schools just like Beane, however Huntington hired many more specific analysts. Huntington hired Baseball Prospectus's Dan Fox to build the structure of their proprietary database, while also being an analyst for the Pirates, also Mike Fitzgerald was hired as an analyst who even traveled with the team on the road; over the years the Pirates' analytical team built a relationship with the players and the coaching staff, to the point where the analytical group became a key part of the team, even more so than the Oakland A's and Billy Beane (Sloan Sports Conference). The Professional Sports League Baseball Ryan Mahn Professor Matheson Economics of Sports October 27, 2014 Moneyball Compared to most other professional sports leagues in the United States, there is a lot of financial disparity between small market and large market teams in Major League Baseball. Moneyball: The Art of Winning an Unfair Game is a novel about how an unlikely general manager, Billy Beane, used unconventional statistical analysis to enable the Oakland Athletics to outplay much wealthier teams in the league. The problem faced by Beane and the Athletics was competing against large–market teams that were able to afford the services of the "best players" in the league. Sabermetrics, the statistical method applied by Bean and his acquaintance Paul DePodesta deviated from these overused and overvalued measures, and focused on team players, not volatile superstars (Moneyball). Sabermetrics revolved around the analysis of undervalued statistics–primarily on–base percentage, the number of times a player swings at the first pitch, and the average number of pitches per at–bat a player sees (Moneyball). With this tactic, Billy Beane and the Oakland Athletics were able to win many more games than they would have if they were constrained by overvalued players. Beane was able to use this ingenious method of statistical analysis to discern the unique talents of undervalued players that did not meet the statistical criteria of big market teams. With a very specifically assembled team, whereby some players were even forced to switch positions, the Oakland Athletics had seemed to overcome the odds. A prime example of the potential success of sabermetrics was seen in a player named Scott Hatteberg. Hatteberg spent most of his career lingering around the Boston Red Sox organization as a catcher–both in the minor leagues and in the major leagues (Moneyball). Hatteberg was seen as a very average catcher and hitter throughout the big leagues. Player Recruitment Process In Michael Lewis's Moneyball Michael Lewis's Moneyball highlights the management of the baseball team Oakland A's by Billy Beane as the team pushes through its 2002 season. Moneyball is an underdog story as shown by the A's tight budget and the struggle to keep up with other teams whose player budget was much higher than that of the A's. Lewis begins his book by stating that the A's were winning a lot more games than expected with their tight budget. Lewis found that the A's manager, Billy Beane, used a method of recruiting undervalued players that analyzed statistics that other teams typically overlooked. Beane's method of player recruitment would set the standard of recruiting in the future. After showing that Billy Beane revolutionized the player recruitment process, Lewis delves into how Beane went about doing so. Beane referenced largely to what were known as sabermetrics, which was a fan made statistics system that determined a player's abilities to succeed that had not yet been accepted by the Major Leagues. Although the Marlins finished in third place in the NL East last year, Miami still finished a full 19 games out of first place. In the race for the Wild Card, the deficit was even higher. By the end of the season, the Marlins were 26 games back.

The offseason was a rather quiet one for the Marlins. Miami seems content moving forward with its young cast of players. The Marlins' only moves were a few free agency additions to the pitching staff. Their biggest haul was the signing of Wei–Yin Chen to a five–year, $80 million contract, while the Marlins also signed pitcher Edwin Jackson, who could bounce back from bullpen duties in 2015 to earn a rotation spot. Philadelphia wasn't only last in the division, the Phillies also had the worst record in MLB at 63–99. However, the dreadful season earned Philadelphia the first pick in this year's MLB Draft in June.

The Phillies rebuild began when they finally decided to dismantle the old core that won the World Series in 2008. From that title team, the Phillies traded the middle infielders who began their careers with the organization. Philadelphia traded shortstop Jimmy Rollins after the 2014 season and second baseman Chase Utley in August of last season. Both players were traded to the Los Angeles Dodgers and brought back a few pitching prospects. The Phillies biggest return came from trading pitcher Cole Hamels to the Texas Rangers in an eight–player deal at the deadline last year. Philadelphia sent Hamels and reliever Jake Diekman to the Rangers for pitchers Matt Harrison and Jake Thompson, minor league pitching prospects Jared Eickhoff and Alec Asher, catcher Jorge Alfaro and outfielder Nick Williams. However, Harrison has battled back issues, so his castoff was merely a way for the Rangers to get the contract off their books.

As this offseason began, it was new Phillies general manager Matt Klentak's job to continue the rebuild. Klentak's first move was trading closer Ken Giles and shortstop Jonathan Arauz to the Houston Astros for former No. 1 overall pick Mark Appel and pitchers Thomas Eshelman, Brett Oberholtzer, Vincent Velasquez and Harold Arauz. The Phillies' deals have replenished their farm system after years of being trade deadline buyers depleted it. Some of these rules, stated in 1845, include, the distance between all the bases being ninety feet, and having nine players on each side. No longer would players be plugging runners, but now they would be tagging them with the ball. The rule of forcing a player out at a base was also introduced in 1854. This impacts that it has on cities are more tourists and profit for the stadium and teams to expand their salary caps. The WS affects not only the fans but it effects the city. • 33. Quotes For Lord Capulet Essay Outline The Boston Red Sox and the New York Yankees play at least 22 games a year just against each other, not including playoffs. They are also the largest rival baseball team of all times. Romeo and Juliet could be portrayed using the Capulets as Boston and the Montagues as New York. At one of the games between them taking place in Fenway Park, Romeo and Juliet meet and hit it off right away. Although their rivals, they do not realize who they are until after the game. In my favorite scene, Act 4 Scene 2, Lord Capulet plays a very important part by talking to Juliet about the wedding with Paris. I think that Lord Capulet is the most needed character in this scene because it is all based on his inner attitude. When Juliet begs for ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... After her speech, he goes straight to business face. If I directed a play of this, then I would direct the person playing Lord Capulet to walk around and talk to himself about random things like caterer, flowers, place, etc... and then start talking about his rewards because, as it says above, all he cares about is what is in it for him. Staging is just one element in the theater genre, but it is a very important one. If I had the chance to direct Romeo and Juliet in the modernized version I created, then the lights for Act 4 Scene 2 would be bright, like fluorescent lights were everywhere. Even if Lord Capulet was not holding a phone that lights up, we would need to signify that he is using one and what he is doing with it. That would need it's own lighting. The camera angle if we ever filmed it would move from place to place. I believe that it would start on Lord Capulet and then everyone else would answer while he is on his phone. The camera when Juliet enters would be focused on her, maybe with her running into the room where her father is. All of the actors need costumes to make the whole scene come alive. Lord Capulet would be wearing a suit, black with a light blue undershirt and a red tie would be added to this to make the audience believe that he had just come from work. The suit will also show that even at home, Lord Capulet is all about the money. Romeo and Juliet already has many modernized versions ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Many who do recognize that the class is being offered in the school may also question the value and academic merit of such a course. What people don't see is that the world of sports is closely linked to the social world. Social attitudes are reflected in the world of sports. These attitudes can be seen in different ways such as the social atmosphere affecting sports, the ways in which we define sports, exempting the world of sports from the world of citizenship and deviance in sports. Through these ways we can see how such a class can enlighten a person on sports and the real world. In this course of the Sociology of Sport, we intend to... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... A more visible example of rules changing to meet the cultural needs of a society is one that we see in our everyday lives while watching professional baseball or MLB. The Major League Baseball is divided into two leagues which are the National league and the American League. The American League has a designated hitter while the National League does not allow designated hitters within their rules. Rules do not conflict when teams of their respected leagues play against each other but when a team from the National League has to play against a team from the American League, rules conflict. Teams must now play according to home field rules. That means if the American League team happens to be the home team, rules apply for the allowance of a designated hitter. Back in the schoolyard, basketball rules are arbitrary all the time. Rules are less strict in the schoolyard compared to rules in the NBA or in college basketball. Players also cut some slack on less talented players who may constantly commit "travels" or "double dribbles". Sports don't exist in a cultural vacuum but the world of sports is very much like the world of masculinity. During the course we watched a video of "Killing Us Softly", which has to do with the study of gender representation in advertising. It reviews if and how the image of women in advertising has changed over the last 20 years. With ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 35. Keeping Baseball a Constant Essay Keeping Baseball a Constant Movies are an integral part of American life. They make us laugh and in a blink of an eye make us cry. But above all, movies tell a story, a story about not merely the characters in the flick, but about each and every one of us in the audience. No matter what the plot, purpose or theme of the movie, there isn't a single person who can honestly say that they can't relate to at least one element of the movie in the one hundred and twenty some odd minutes of intense sound and color. Baseball is America's pastime, America's national game. Thus a movie about baseball captivates the essential American spirit in its purest form. But this was not enough to insure financial stability as the league expanded too readily and rapidly to thirty teams. Currently baseball is struggling, especially in the cities home to small market teams. Thus why Commissioner Bud Selig and the owners recently approved a motion to implement contraction, or the elimination of franchises from the league, most likely of the Montreal Expos and the Minnesota Twins. According to Selig, the teams facing contraction were chosen based on three principle characteristics: a small fan base, a small total revenue generated over the past couple of seasons and the smallest significance to the game. In this case, the writer who chooses to employ exigence is ESPN: the Magazine columnist Jim Caple. Formerly a sports columnist for the Saint Paul Pioneer Press from 1989 to 2000 and a diehard Twins fan, Caple wrote his article entitled "Bud's Twin Killing" in the November 26th issue of ESPN: the Magazine. Using the three main artistic appeals as defined by Sophocles, Caple sets out to expose why Commissioner Selig wants to dissolve the Twins, how his reasoning is inappropriately influenced and, above all, why the Twins should remain in Minnesota. Ethos is usually the first artistic appeal found in any piece of writing. Caple's article is no exception to this age old rule. Ethos, or credibility and goodwill, is demonstrated by Caple in paragraph two ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 36. Essay To Hit Or Not To Hit Nic Wilson Dr. Hancock ENGWR 300 10:30 8 October 2017 Argument Essay Draft 2 To Hit or Not to Hit In 1973, Major League Baseball accepted Rule 5.11, also known as the Designated Hitter (DH) rule. This rule allows a player, who does not play a defensive position, to hit in place of the pitcher. The rule was created because pitchers, most of whom are notoriously bad hitters, were basically a free out for the opposing team. However, for some ungodly reason, the new DH rule was only established in one of the two leagues in the MLB. As a result, the American League, the league using the DH rule, has consistently produced higher batting averages since 1973 than the National League. When two teams from different leagues play each other, they... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... By expanding the DH rule to the National League, the MLB could create and extend more careers for players just like Martinez. Many people against the designated hitter believe having a DH ruins the integrity of the game. They think that teams should need to strategize by having pitchers bunt runners to the next base or force managers to make the tough decision of when to substitute a hitter for the pitcher. People opposed to the DH rule believe it is wrong to change the rules because this game has been played the same way for more than 100 years. This is both a closed minded and ancient way of thinking. Rules are meant to evolve and change over time to adjust to the times. The days of sacrificing at–bats to bunt runners over are over. The sacrifice bunt has been virtually destroyed by new statistics and metrics that show how inefficient it is. The game is in need of more offense and expanding the DH rule to both leagues solves that problem and is a necessary evolvement to the sport. Over the past few years, pitching has been dominant and the officials in the MLB offices have looked for new ways to increase offensive production. For the 2017 season, the MLB has attempted to fix this problem by implementing a new type of baseball with a harder exterior and smaller laces which increase the distance and reduce drag (also increasing distance) of batted balls. As a result, home run totals across the league have increased ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Despite the fact that their rotation is young and unquestionably talented, every single one of their starters has at some point been injured, and there's no reason to think that the injury bug will stop feasting on its Big Apple this year. They are co–anchored by Noah Syndergaard and Jacob DeGrom, who are both budding stars. However, bear in mind that they are a big risk to miss the postseason altogether because of that pesky injury bug. The Nationals played strikingly well last year, albeit Bryce Harper having a down year. During the offseason they acquired Joe Blanton, as well as hitters Adam Eaton, Matt Wieters, and Adam Lind to retool an already adept lineup which consists of Daniel Murphy, whose average fell .001 short of winning the batting title, 2015 NL MVP Bryce Harper, reigning comeback player of the year Anthony Rendon, and up and coming star Trea Turner. Eaton is a "big league" outfielder with a high OBP, and Wieters will start at catcher, but his production is bound to peter off because he's on the tail–end of his career. Lind is a washed up former American League DH trying to make it in the NL; however, Blanton should be a humungo asset in coagulating a bullpen which lacks a true closer. Jayson Werth and Ryan Zimmerman are both injury –prone but are marvelous when on the field. The Nats rotation is exemplary, anchored by Max Scherzer, Stephen Strasburg, and Tanner Roark. Scherzer and Roark were top –notch last year, with both finishing with a sub–3.00 ERA, but Roark is a massive regression candidate as his stats last year were thoroughly unanticipated and likely fortuitous. In each of his shows, Oliver backs up his claims by showing studies and news stories relating back to his argument. His segment on the New York Yankees is no different, as he uses a variety of different sources. For example, when explaining the Yankees "elitist" policies, Oliver shows a commercial for the New York Yankees Legends Club, which is for wealthy season ticket holders. By using this source, he backs up his claim on how elitist the Yankees are when compared to other sports teams. Oliver's use of the three artistic proofs was overall very effective and funny, which is especially important towards his audience. The show's media spectrum falls mainly on the Internet, where about 94% of Oliver's demographic watches his show, while the audience 's' top interests are entertainment, media, famous people and societal issues.
