Symbols In Lord Of The Flies By William Golding
Symbols can ether makes a piece of literature extremely good, or extremely lackluster. Within in the
novel "Lord of the Flies" William Golding made use of multiple symbols. In "Lord of the Flies"
Golding showed the reader three symbols the conch, the beast, and the log in which Ralph sits and
changes these symbols over time and they add a certain symbolic meaning to the allegory. One of
the symbols that hold a symbolic meaning but also changes is the conch. The conch represents the
'the high hand of authority' but defiantly changes over time.as the reader can see when Ralph blows
the conch the first time all of the others on the island came to the spot where Ralph blew it. It was a
signal of sorts and it gave the beholder a certain authority.

Symbolism of Houses in A Doll's House and A Rose For Emily...
The state of a flawed society is an issue that many people recognize, but have different ways of
approaching it. In the case of William Faulkner's "A Rose For Emily" he examines the raw truth of
the act of avoiding a flawed and evolving society. Whereas, "A Doll's House" by Katherine
Mansfield portrays the way that a flawed society can change through small acts of resistance that
break the boundaries of social hierarchies. Both Mansfield and Faulkner use houses as symbols of a
flawed society in their stories, however the manner in which they use these symbols are very
different.
In a "Rose for Emily", Faulkner uses Emily's house as a symbol of the barrier Emily forms between
herself and society. As society moves through generations and ... Show more content on

The pairing of the symbols of the house and the character Emily is similar to the way that Mansfield
portrays Kezia and the dollhouse. Kezia is one of the central images in the story; she symbolizes the
silent opposing side to the influence of a social hierarchy. The story deals with the division of social
and economic classes, and it is greatly amplified with the simplified setting of a childhood peer
group. Mansfield uses the dollhouse to symbolize all of society. The higher–class, the Burnells, are
the only ones that are permitted use it for their benefits. The children admire the "perfect little
house" and dote upon every detail of the immaculate house. Kezia, on the other hand, is drawn to
"an exquisite little amber lamp with a white globe". This lamp, as the story progresses, symbolizes
the small piece of hope, that fixes into the society perfectly, but that no one except for a few people
actually see and appreciate it's beauty. Upon noticing this piece of perfection, she criticized the other
parts of the house such as, "the father and mother dolls, who sprawled very stiff as though they had
fainted in the drawing–room and their two little children asleep upstairs, were really too big for the
doll's house...but the lamp was perfect"(119). Her recognizing of the imperfections symbolizes the
overall functioning of society. The lower class is symbolized in the Kelveys, who are cast out of the
social group,

Stereotypes In Lord Of The Flies By William Golding
Golding effectively presents characters through symbolism, stereotypes and natural imagery.
Golding wrote this book as he wanted to expose the readers to the real worlds death how people are
treated in the world. One of the characters that are introduced as a stereotype is 'the fair boy'.The
stereotype used to present Ralph is a cool boy who is only friends With other popular boys as he
didn't care about the other boy from the beginning as he said "wait a minute" this show that he
doesn't care about anything apart of leaving and finding his way out. This character is really
important to the novel as it says 'the' in front of 'fair boy'. He is one of the popular boys who has a
high status as it says 'piggy looks up at Ralph'. This shows piggy admires Ralph as Ralph is more
popular and the cool boy. As Ralph has a high status piggy looks up to him. This also shows piggy
has a lower status than Ralph. "The fair boy" can also show the description of him the "fair"could
also be referring to his hair colour and the readers were told that in the first paragraph shows his one
of the most important characters. Golding also introduces as to another character "other boy" and 'fat
boy' he is not popular as he has a low status. Before in the novel Golding calls him "the other boy"
clearly from the beginning we are shown that he is not important as we are not even told about any
description about him. He is also shown as a really clever child who wears 'specs'. In society people

Hour 2
Superior Story
Between the two short stories both written by author Joyce Carol Oates, "Where Are You Going,
Where Have You Been" "Life After High School", it is clear that the story "Where Are You Going
Where Have You Been, is the more superior story when comparing literary elements found
throughout the story. Joyce Carol Oates uses symbolism, simile, metaphor and imagery to explain
what Connie went through.
Symbolism is used throughout the story in many way. The first thing stated about Connie is that she
has a: [...] habit of craning her neck to look into mirrors or checking other people's faces to make
sure her own was all right. (469) Connie feels like she has some kind of control by judging people
with her eyes. The observer has control over the observed. When Connie is under Arnold's gaze,
when she meets him for the first time in the restaurant parking lot, she can't help looking at him,
evening doing a double take. She is interested in him because she feels she has control over him.
She likes the familiar interest he has in her. Arnold wants her, Connie knows that, yet Connie is
depriving him of her. Later on, when Arnold first appears at her door, he's wearing sunglasses,
hiding himself from Connie's gaze, while he is free to gaze at her all he wants. These sunglasses
represent the power roles have switching. Connie is observed for most of the story, as an object to be
ogled by men or envied by women. The last scene of

Status Symbols In Things Fall Apart
In Things Fall Apart by Chinua Achebe one of the main culture elements which is the same in THS

few pivalleges. This is the same thing in the book Things Fall Apart people who have done more
significant things in their life are given a title and are placed higher up on the social structure. There
are many examples shown throughout the book and Tiger Q that illustrates Status Symbols.
In THS the older you get the more status you get, which is the same thing in Things Fall Apart.

Othello, By William Shakespeare
Both Desdemona and Daisy are repetitively referred to as objects by the male characters in the texts.
From the offset Desdemona is continually objectified by the male characters. Both Rodrigo and Iago
refer to her as belonging to Brabantio (her father) where she is aligned with his 'bags', Brabantio
states that; 'she is abused, stolen from me and corrupted' (1.3.61). This highlights his patriarchal
dominance, it seems that he is more concerned about his reputation, rather than his daughter. This
would have been accurate and expected of a woman, as they were seen as the property of their
fathers and husbands. Shakespeare structurally objectifies Desdemona through the symbolism of the
handkerchief. The handkerchief in Othello and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Although the 'green light' can be interpreted as a symbol of hope, it is further underlined with the
same sense of doom as the 'dark waters' as it highlights the loss and tragedy of Gatsby. McMechan
suggests that the 'Hollowness of Daisy's soul creates a vacuum into which Gatsby gets sucked into.'
Through the constant objectification, such as with the 'greenlight', Daisy is presented as a somewhat
vacuous character as she is incapable of feeling desire due to her position in society. Daisy gave up
her chance of love for wealth and status by marrying Tom; "she vanished into her rich house, full
life, leaving Gatsby" (8.142). The use of listing emphasises Daisy's shallowness and vacancy in a
world which she has always been sheltered by wealth and prosperity. The use of symbolism results
in Daisy's character becoming unrealistic and 'hollow' diminishing the reader's sympathy for her.
Both Desdemona and Daisy's voices are used as lyrical, compelling symbols. Just before her death,
in act 4, Desdemona begins to sing: 'a poor soul sat sighing by a sycamore' [...] 'singing willow,
willow, willow' (4.3.39–44). The fact that Desdemona is singing a ballad right before her death
emphasises the love and affection she has for Othello. However, this love is contrasted with the
symbol of the 'willow', highlighting feelings of

Analysis of Edmund Waller's Poem On a Girdle Essay
Analysis of Edmund Waller's Poem "On a Girdle"
At first glance, Edmund Waller's poem "On a Girdle" seems to suggest nothing more than praise of
one woman's fair beauty and the speaker's love for her. After diving deeper into the text, however, it
becomes apparent that the speaker does a much better job of praising himself than the woman. His
love is more a lust for control and possession than a true declaration of sentiment. Waller uses
extreme imagery and exaggeration to seemingly praise this woman. More importantly, however, he
subtlety belittles her through tropes and diction. Waller evokes this image of her girdle to express his
own desire to restrict this beautiful woman.
It cannot be denied that Waller ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Everything he loved about her fit around her waist, her body. Waller is not interested in her brain,
her soul or her ideas. He never mentions them. He also never mentions how she might think or feel
about him. Waller praises this woman because of her beauty alone and as a result this seems to be
her only worth.
Within all this praise and admiration the woman is transformed into a status symbol. Waller brags,
"No monarch but would give his crown, His arms might do what this has done." "Crown" is an
interesting word in this context. A crown is a king's status symbol, but a crown is also a British
monetary unit, a way of measuring worth. With this statement, Waller seems to be saying a king
would gladly give up his crown, his power, to put his arms around this woman as her girdle does.
When viewed in this light the statement appears to be a compliment. Perhaps, however, Waller is
actually implying that this woman is as effective a symbol of status as a crown and with her in his
possession a king would no longer need to rely on his crown for power. In this case the word
"crown" can be seen as an ironic pun. A crown denotes status but can also serve as a way of
measuring monetary worth. The woman is beautiful, giving the man status as a crown gives a king.
A crown in the monetary sense measures worth and this woman is deemed worthy only by her

The Life You Save May Be Your Own Short Story
Deceitful, dishonest, disloyal: these words describe the shady characters presented in "The Life You
Save May Be Your Own," by Flannery O' Connor. In this short story, Shiftlet tries to con an old lady
in order to obtain her automobile. By this , the man drives away from his salvation due to his
selfishness and hypocritical personality. O'Connor master uses of dark humor reveals to the reader
the truth that lays underneath the words of Shiftlet. The beautiful use of color blends with the dark
sense of humor by foreshadowing the tragic events that in consequence happens when having a
sinful personality. With the punchline at the end, the reader soon sees O'Connor message behind the
rain clouds by deciphering the man actions in relation with the stormy weather. O'Connor warns
what happens when we try to escape redemption by the use of color that represents every aspect of
the story, the representation of symbols to reveal the personality of Shiftlet, and the dark humor that
drives the story.
O'Connor utilizes color to surrounds every aspect of the short story by detailing what an object
represents in relation to how we reach salvation. The beginning of the story starts out with Shiftlet
coming to an desolate farm with an old lady and her daughter. Shiftlet arrives with "... a black town
suit and a brown felt hat that was turned up in the front and down in the back and he carried a tin
tool box by a handle."(O'Connor 23) Not only is his black coat symbolizing death

Status Symbol Of The Gang MS-13
For a law–abiding citizen, the status symbols of the gang MS–13 seem peculiar. To be a high–
ranking member or, at the very least, a valued member of the group, one must have a high–kill rate.
The more you kill, the more precious you become to the group; they know they can count on you to
defend their turf and thus you earn yourself a higher place on the metaphorical gang ladder.
Similarly speaking, the more turf you defend by killing rival gang members and anyone who
threatens your control of the area, the more land you can mark up with MS–13 graffiti. Although this
may be considered more of a group status symbol, I believe the concept still applies. Another status
symbol in MS–13 is tattoos showcasing your time in prison. If you have a prison ... Show more

A normal citizen's core values may be family–oriented, and MS–13's values are similar to an extent.
The gang, although callous, do seem to care for one another – that is, unless they betray the
organization like the female in the film who was killed by her gang member friends for telling the
police gang secrets. Despite this, like already stated, when a gang member dies, they get a mural
painted in their honor – spray–painted illegally, of course. With that being said, the film covered
very little on how the gang's members treat their actual blood families; however, I do wonder about
the dynamics since gang members are constantly at risk of being sent to prison or being deported. I
also wonder that if when a gang member has a child, is that child then part of the gang, or do they
get to decide, and do they still have to be beat in? It comes as no surprise, but gang members have
vastly different values when it comes to concepts like killing and fighting. Killing is their job and
they treat it as such – but this does not excuse their actions in the slightest. Along with this, instead
of going through the government, state, county, city, or region to own land, the gang members
acquire land in unjust ways such as turf wars with rival gangs that end in fights or murder. On a
different note, unlike in a normal American society,

Summary Of The Logic Of Stupid Poor People
I wholeheartedly endorse what Cottom calls "The Logic of Stupid Poor People", that poor people
buy status symbols to survive in this world. She demonstrates that, as a middle class black girl, her
family had a way of turning the tables in their favor in multiple aspects in order to supply their
needs and wants. Poor people buy expensive items, sometimes depriving themselves of their other
needs, just for the respect of others. These items are 21st–century status symbols, they can single–
handedly determine the fate of your everyday encounters. The author uses personal experiences to
support her argument, persuasively changing your entire perspective and broadening your mind to
another individual's lifestyle.
This includes a story of her mother who waltzed into a social service agency dressed in an
impressive outfit to set straight an issue that her elderly neighbor had trouble with over the past year
in a single day (Cottom 1012). To elaborate, she justifies why poor people ordinarily make the
choices they do, while conversely questioning them. In her text, "The Logic of Stupid Poor People",
Cottom declares that "We want to belong" (1013). I agree that we want to belong, if you belong you
are safe. At one point, her first professional job manager decided she was accordingly ". . . too
classy to be on the call center floor." (Cottom 1014) This proves that putting money into a brand
name suit can have a positive influence on others, in this case she gained a high pay raise and her
workload was decreased. If poor people spend money on classy outfits, the rich people will perceive
them as their own.
In her last paragraph, she identifies herself as the upperclassman, stating that we rich people ". . .
save our money, eschew status symbols, cut coupons, practice puritanical sacrifice to amass a
million dollars" (Cottom 1015). This could be classified as a simple jest, to be honest. To me, it
sounds sarcastic, which is probably what the author intended. Her argument is informative, yet
entertaining. Mocking the snobbish attitude of some who believe they are superior, she skillfully
disguises her sentence to appear innocent while the message it delivers is not quite. The point of this
sentence is for you to realize

Jane Eyre vs House of Mirth Lily Essay
Jane Eyre vs House of Mirth Lily
The novels, Jane Eyre, by Charlotte Bronte, and House of Mirth, by Edith
Wharton, contain many similarities and differences of which I will discuss in this essay.
The focus will be on the main characters of each book, Jane Eyre, and Lily Bart and will include
important points and ideas demonstrated in these novels.
To begin, Jane, from Charlotte Bronte's novel, Jane Eyre, was an orphan who was raised by an
upper–class family who resented her and did not want her, therefore torturing, abusing, and treating
her as someone at a status even lower than the servants.
As a child, she knows that her status is awkward and even later on, as a grown woman, she is
considered a second class citizen ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
To point out another difference in status between the two characters, Jane Eyre rarely displayed a
longing to be part of the higher class, whereas, Lily Bart is intrigued and attracted by it.
Another comparison between Lily and Jane can be made regarding beauty. This topic is apparent
almost immediately in House of Mirth. In the beginning of the book, it is expressed that, "One or
two persons, in brushing past them, lingered to look; for Miss Bart was a figure to arrest even the
suburban traveller rushing to his last train" (p.18). He goes on to wonder that, "she must have cost a
great deal to make, that a great many dull and ugly people must have been sacrificed to produce her"
(p.20). These excerpts demonstrate Lily's external beauty. This notion is made even more obvious in
the line, "the qualities distinguishing her from the herd of her sex were chiefly external". Lily was
beautiful and charming which may have aided her on her way to popularity. Even her name, Lily,
implies beauty and can be seen as an emblem of femininity. Jane is very different from Lily
concerning the aspect of 'beauty'. She is not blessed with physical beauty and is described as
ordinary and plain. However, Jane consists of a certain kind of beauty, perhaps more important. She
is internally beautiful and has the advantage of having the beauty of mental intelligence and

English As A Symbol Of Power And High Social Status
INTRODUCTION
Education is a nation building and globally inter–related activity that unlocks the door to
modernization. It is imparted through formal, informal and non–formal ways. For this purpose, there
is a need of interaction among the students, teachers and study material. Usually, educational system
at the primary level follows the medium of instructions in the mother tongue. But at the secondary
level, the students are required to learn one or two unfamiliar languages i.e. English and Urdu. In
Pakistan, the students have to study English as a compulsory subject from K.G to graduation level
due to the following reasons:
i. English is a mean of understanding the foreign and higher educational work. ii. English is an
international language used in research, commerce, aviation, diplomacy and source of scientific and
technological advancement. iii. English is a symbol of power and high social status. (Rehman, 2004)
Language is no doubt an essential part of human life. It is used as a means of communication.
Language has been defined in many ways. Some of these are as "a language is a system of arbitrary
vocal symbols by means of which a social group operates" (Pahuja, 1994). With the arrival of
British in the sub–continent, English replaced the languages of learning and education such as
Arabic, Persian and Sanskrit. A turning point in the socio–political history of the sub–continent was
Lord Macaulay's decision in 1835 to favour English and bring an end to the

An Analysis Of Henrik Ibsen 's A Doll 's House
A Symbol of the Times
Henrik Ibsen masterfully uses symbolism to add depth and meaning to his play A Doll's House. The
story is about a housewife named Nora who gets into trouble when she forges her father's name to
borrow money for her husband's sake. Many objects take on new meaning in this story, from the
Christmas tree in the opening scene to the slammed door at the end. Ibsen uses Nora as symbol
representing how many women in that time period were treated like objects. The literal meaning of
this engaging, but the use of symbolism is what makes it a truly powerful story.
The Helmers live in nineteenth century Norway. The opening scene is set during the Christmas
season, in the apartment of a somewhat average family where Nora and Torvald are married with
three kids. The story revolves around Nora, and how she forged her dying father's signature to
acquire a loan. In Nora's eyes she had to go behind Torvald's back, so that she could take him to
Italy to recover from his illness. Nora must acquire the money to pay off the loan without her
husband knowing. The reason being that Torvald is very tight with money, and would not spend so
much on himself. The man Nora borrowed from is employed by Torvald, and will soon be fired.
Krogstad is his name, and he tells Nora that if she can convince her husband to let him keep his job,
he will not tell Torvald of her actions. Nora can not acquire the money quick enough, so Krogstad
sends a letter to Torvald revealing Nora's actions.

Theme Of Betrayal In The Kite Runner
Deception in The Kite Runner
Betrayal of trust often causes unforeseen consequences, harms relationships, and results in internal
and external conflicts. Betrayal of friendships can influence the loss of trust which will, in turn,
damage the relationships. Khaled Hosseini shows themes of consequences of betrayal and loss of
friendship within his captivating novel The Kite Runner. Throughout Hosseini's novel, readers
follow Amir, the main character, on his journey to make peace with his past mistakes. To express
betrayal's effect on childhood friendships, Khaled Hosseini incorporates captivating vivid imagery,
descriptive diction, and figurative language when describing symbols such as the crumbling wall,
kite flying, and the scarred lips of both Amir and Hassan. In the novel, The Kite Runner, Hosseini
uses symbols that parallel events in childhood and adulthood to emphasize the themes of
consequences of betrayal and loss of friendship.
Throughout the novel, Hosseini's use of symbols illustrates how betrayal is detrimental to a
friendship. By incorporating the symbol of the crumbling wall, the author describes a fallen
friendship. In the beginning of the novel, Hosseini introduces the crumbling wall to the readers
when Amir states, "I remember the precise moment, crouching behind a crumbling wall" (Hosseini
1). The wall represents the deterioration of Hassan and Amir's relationship, and Hosseini uses the
word crumbling to illustrate that. Additionally, Hosseini uses

Why Are Status Symbols In The World For So Long?
The Role of Status Symbols What are status symbols and why have they had such a huge role in the
world for so long? Status symbols are things that show a person's social status and they are very
present in the world today, as well as in Okonkwo's time. People use things such as the clothes you
wear and the car you drive to determine the way they think of you. The world pays so much
attention to status now and does not really pay attention to what matters. Sometimes people will
flaunt the things they have because they know it will impress the people around them because of
how big of an impact status symbols have on the world. For example, most people will look to status
symbols when meeting a new person and deciding if they want to be friends

The African Exhibit At The Art Institute Of Chicago
The African exhibit at the Art Institute of Chicago is difficult to find. At the end of a shotgun wing
consisting of Japanese, Korean, and other East Asian art, and beyond Native American art, sits the
one–room gallery for African art. Here, most of the objects could be considered fashions, tools, or
domestic objects. There is a bizarre absence of chronology, and the objects seem too similar to speak
for Africa at large– as if everything on display arose from the same historical situation and from the
same experimental sampling pool. Among this ad hoc assortment of characters, one would find a

This pattern continues on all sides of the box with the metalwork even making up the hasp on the
front and the hinges of the box's lid on the plain, back panel. Even the interior radiates with
ornamentation. The coppery leather lining of the jewelry box is painted with reds, greens, purples,
and yellows. The geometry of the pattern is vastly different than the exterior. It hosts a field of
angular forms adjoined to their neighbors with repetitious outlines of various colors. Some of these
forms contain even more detail. One can pick out latticing, hatching, cross–hatching, and stippling
within these shapes. The detail work creates a contrast between interior and exterior, as the artistic
production between the spaces is vastly different. It seems like these boxes are made by group
effort. Functionally, the jewelry box needs further examination for any comprehension. Its bulky
size makes sense in conjunction with the many surrounding jewelry pieces, which are elaborate,
heavily ornamented, and chunky. Because the back of the chest was plain and so unlike the rest, it
must have been hidden from sight. This could very well mean that the box was fixed in location, like
furniture. Similarly, by understanding that jewelry boxes were used as dowry or sometimes as a gift
from bride to groom, one can also infer the centrality of the box to the culture. In the United States it
is common to receive dinnerware and other

This essay discusses how advertisement effects people's lives
As Americans we are exposed to advertisements everyday. People are pressured from every
direction by advertisements which exploit their deepest fears, attractions, needs, and desires, shaping
their behaviors, goals, and thoughts. They are led into believing false information and promises that
are mostly never kept, all for the simple reason of selling the product and making profit. We see
advertisements everywhere––in magazines and newspapers, on the radio, on TV, online, in the mail,
even over the phone. These advertisements use the basic ideas of either providing an elite status with
the possession of the product, or giving a sense of belonging to a group or community. Since the
recent military activity in Iraq and Afghanistan, another ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The whole patriotic theme is strange because the connection between patriotism and the product
does not make the product function better, so why do we feel obligated to pay attention to the
advertisement and even purchase that product.
Along with patriotism another concept used widely is the elitism the product brings to people with
its possession. As Jack Solomon wrote in his essay Masters of Desire, "We Americans dream of
rising about the crowd, of attaining a social summit beyond the reach of ordinary citizens" (1). He is
basically saying that Americans want to be better then the people around them and this belief is what
marketers feast on, creating status symbols like Rolex, Mercedes, BMW, etc. One advertisement that
crosses my mind in terms of using elitism would be the new U2 iPod Special Edition advertisement.
This promotes an iPod with a black cover and laser engraved signatures of the U2 band members;
everything else is similar to a regular iPod; whereas, the price is $50 more. People are led into
believing that the U2 iPod is better than the regular one only because it is endorsed by U2. Another
ironic detail is that a normal iPod itself is a product of elitism, because even though it has similar
functions to a Sony or any other MP3 player, it costs $100 more only because it comes with the
signature white headphones. These headphones, unique only because an iPod come equipped with
them, have made themselves and the iPod a status symbol. Most

An Analysis Of Howard Nemerov 's ' The Vacuum '
A Husbands Loss
'The Vacuum' is a poem that was written by Howard Nemerov. The poem uses the theme of
symbolism to convey the relationship between a vacuum cleaner and a widower. The poem can be
seen as a symbolic description of the experience he is going through after the demise of his beloved
wife. The sentence structure and the type of figurative language requires one to evaluate and analyze
the poem effectively to understand the meaning. The line in the poem "The vacuum cleaner sulks in
the corner closet, its bag limp as a stopped lung" (Mays 580) is indicative of the symbolism that his
wife was the housekeeper and when her lungs stopped, the vacuum cleaner also stopped, because
she was the one that used the vacuum. Nemrov's poetry shows a consistent emphasis on thought and
his poems relate a broad spectrum of emotions and a variety of concerns (Web 1).
In 'The Vacuum', Howard brings out the emotions of an elderly man after he lost his wife, which
ushered him in a life of loneliness and sorrow. The writer used the 'Vacuum' pun to distinguish
between the obvious homemaking profession of his wife and despair of the obvious grieving by her
husband. Nemerov did not use the vacuum cleaner symbol as a primary personification since it
could have limited the manner in which he outlined the emotions of the gentleman in the poem.
However, the use of the vacuum symbolism was perfect in an elucidating emptiness that was caused
by the death of the wife. The author uses the vacuum

Winter Dream Analysis
The Quagmire of the Upper Echelons of American Society: The Allegorical Tale of Fitzgerald's
"Winter Dream"
Since commerce systems have replaced the days of bartering and trade, proverbs about money,
wealth, and status have gained some popularity. Why is that so? Perhaps it's the idea that money is
"inherently evil". The old saying, "Money can't buy you happiness" is heard by all individuals at
some point in their lives. This aphorism warns the dangers that happiness doesn't stem from money,
but by different avenues of life or that happiness comes from within. In the story Winter Dreams by
F. Scott Fitzgerald, it chronicles the life of Dexter Green as he rises through the American societal

During the 1920's there had been a profound number of cultural and social changes, especially
surrounding the "social taboos" of women. Women had more sexual liberation, the right to vote, and
more power in society; Flappers were the women that exemplified those changes. Fitzgerald wrote
Judy Jones as the ideal woman, forever beautiful and youthful. golden, and opulent; a woman who'd
make the perfect trophy wife. Judy's entire existence is built upon this idea of her being a beautiful
rich girl that seeks admiration and status by running around with different men. Even though Judy
Jones is technically a Flapper, she's is not as "free" as one would expect. Judy has money and
doesn't have to worry about survival or her family, so in turn she doesn't have a job or a purpose.
She's able to go out every night and do as she pleases, but as many people know, the partying
lifestyle tends to burn a person out. Judy is treated more as an object rather than a person and this
kind of life isn't very fulfilling. She's quoted as saying, "I'm more beautiful than anybody else, why
can't I be happy?". As previously stated, Judy has the capital to do anything she pleases and she's
beautiful, yet she isn't happy. To put it differently, no man or amount of money truly made Judy

Allusions In A Worn Path
Phoenix Jackson in Eudora Welty's "A Worn Path" has been compared to the mythological phoenix
because of her birdlike qualities, and it's also been noticed that Phoenix possesses many of the same
characteristics as Christ. But, what hasn't been addressed is the fact that Eudora Welty didn't just
leave the symbolism to Christ alone. Welty also included many biblical allusions as well. Phoenix

simply a Christ figure comparable to the Son of God, but she is also a biblical hero facing

Phoenix's status as a biblical character as well. "The old woman waited, silent, erect, and motionless
just as if she were in armor" (84) is reminiscent of the armor of God that Christians must adorn to
"be able to stand against the wiles of the devil" (Ephesians 6:11) and the "parting her way" (28)
brings the awesome sight of Moses parting the Red Sea to mind. Another example would be
Phoenix's comment to the nurse that she and her grandson are "the only two people left in the world"
(93) is suggestive of Adam and Eve being the only two people in the world after Creation. More
subtle clues suggest the "whispering" (21, 28) of fields being the deceptive whispering of temptation
that Satan uses to lure us away from Christ. In fact, the black dog tripping Phoenix and Phoenix
feeling the dog sitting nearby laughing shows are Satan revels in mocking our fall from grace after
he has tempted us into sin just as he tempted Phoenix to steal. Like other biblical

Theme And Symbolism In A Rose For Emily By William Faulkner
In the story "A Rose For Emily" the two most prominent aspects were theme and symbolism they
play a significant part. A theme is the central topic or idea of a story and Symbolism is the action of
a character, word, action, or event that has a deeper meaning in the context of the whole story. The
relationship between theme and symbolism is that a symbol is often times given to allow deeper
thinking into what the author is really talking about and that would be the theme. It connects to A
Rose for Emily by the author William Faulkner allowing Emily and a few other objects to be the
symbols for the underlying theme which is that she had to die in order for the regime to move
forward and progress. Throughout the story, Faulkner used many different symbols to convey the
theme. The three that stuck out the most where Emily, the dust, and Emily's house. Emily was the
most important symbol of the story because she was the leading cause of the theme. Miss. Emily
could be described as "a small fat woman" that lived in a progressing town filled with people who
saw her as a very cold and distant person that lived in the past. Emily didn't really seem to fit in the
structure of the town anymore. Emily was stuck in her old ways that her father had instilled in her
from when he was still alive. Miss. Emily was the only person still with an African American
working for her. Also, she felt as though she was higher than everyone else because that's how it was
back when her father was

Analysis Of Symbols Affecting Australia's Culture
Many Australians pride themselves on our quirky animals or the unusual aspects of our culture, or
even our country's relatively stable financial situation compared to most other countries. However,
many Australians fail to see how Australia is sacrificing this natural beauty, internationally
recognisable icons and unique culture, all for the sake and profits of development. These images
reflect on the vulnerability of Australia's culture, icons and healthy ecosystems and challenge the
tourism/'perfect Australia' stereotype that makes Australia seem ecologically, economically and
socially stable. Three aesthetic features that demonstrate this are colour, positioning and symbols.

The positioning of the subjects in image 1 and image 3 in relation to their environment is a
quintessential example of how Australia is sacrificing its natural beauty and icons. Image 3 shows
two kangaroos, another internationally recognisable icon, positioned in their natural environment
which is a healthy and thriving Australian bush. This image is affiliated with a typical Australian
ecosystem and means that in this area, Australian flora and fauna are thriving. Image 1 also shows
an Australian icon in it's natural environment, but the environment in this image has been destroyed
by humans. This means that in this particular area the flora and fauna are not thriving due to the
negative effects of human intervention. These images clearly demonstrate how Australia is
sacrificing its natural beauty and internationally recognisable icons for the sake of development and

Status Symbols
"Social class is best described as a large group of people close to one another in property, power, and
prestige."(227) These three things effect our lives more than anyone gives them credit for. They also
mainly go hand in hand with one another. Property is exactly what you think it is. It is the house you
own, the land you have but it is also the jewelry you have, your bank accounts. "When you add up
the value of someones propter and subtract their debts you are left with what is called wealth."(227)
With that being said sometimes wealth and income are confused, wealth is the value of the things
you own while income is your flow of money, and they can differ greatly at times. A good example
used by our sociology book is that a famed has all of his land and animals yet has a dry season and

Prestige is the respect or regard someone or something has. Jobs have prestige from more pay, they
required more education, involved more abstract thought, and offer greater independence. The
people who hold jobs with higher prestige also gain prestige. These rankings are constant not only in
America but across the globe. Status symbols are things that people buy to outwardly show how
much money they have to gain them prestige with others. Status symbols are not only things you can
wear, it can be the place you gained your education. How everyone prefers name brand foods over
say great value brand is a form of status symbolism. It is important to try and fully understand the
inter workings of social class in the U.S. because we are confined to social classes. A good
comprehensive understanding of the class system is to understand why people do certain things,
what situations they are faced with, and the opportunities they have. These social classes not only
affect our wealth it effects our health, family lives, education and even religion. This social
stratification is what has led to the break down into

The American Flag: Symbol of the Vanishing American Dream
When the flag was first made, it symbolized freedom and opportunity for both citizens of American
and the immigrants. There was the dream that America was a place of freedom, where you could do
what you want, say what you want, and get a job or own your own land. For some, that dream
became a reality, but for many of those immigrants, it has proven to be just that, a dream. Is this
piece of cloth we hold in such high regard simply an ironic symbol or the American dream? Does it
truly symbolize freedom and opportunity, or is it simply a token for those who want to flaunt their
opinions and financial status.? Every person should have a certain amount of respect for this country

I have also come to realize that the reason I was taught to handle the American flag with such care
was because schools across America, they try to teach children at an early age to have this kind of
patriotism. School systems try to instill American calues in people at a young age because they
know children will be the ones to shape the American future.
In looking at the American flag as one of America's artifacts, I have come to reconsider something I
observed a couple of years ago. While traveling I have found that there are some similarities
everywhere I go. I remember traveling through a few small rural towns in Massachusetts, where I
live, for example. As i drove through one side of the town, I saw large beautiful flags, hung from
beautiful houses. As I drove further those beautiful houses got scarcer and scarcer until that beautiful
neighborhood was just a quick glimpse. I then began to see small houses and some tenements. Is is
here that I did not see the American flag. Was it because the people there were not patriotic? Did
they choose not to have a flag because they don't believe in America? On the other hand, did the
wealthier society want to show off their patriotism, or was it merely hung outside their houses to
shw that they achieved the American dream? What exactly was the flag a symbol of in these

Symbolism In The Kite Runner By Khaled Hosseini
In the novel the Kite Runner, Khaled Hosseini, the author, often uses symbolism throughout the
book. There are many, many items or things that signifies something, or means something different
than what is shown. For example, things like the kite, the pomegranate tree, Amir's scar, the
slingshot, the reference of the lamb, and Hassan's cleft lip. Analyzing symbolism in this book could
go far, there are many things to be said about the symbolism in this novel. The reason for using
symbolism is because it's an important tool to use to create meaning and imagery. And symbolism
shows that literature goes beyond more than what is just simply said. The pomegranate tree is a
symbol in the novel. At the beginning of the book, Amir and Hassan ... Show more content on

And it signifies his poverty, one of the things that separates him from Amir. It signifies as poverty,
because it shows that Hassan and his family do not have enough money to fix the deformity. His
cleft lip also symbolizes Baba's love for him. Baba doesn't really show or tell Hassan that he loves
him all that often. So eventually, when Baba pays a surgeon for his marred cleft lip to be fixed, it
was a birthday present and it indicated the love that he has for Hassan, no matter how "difficult" it is
to love him. This quote from the Kite Runner shows how much Hassan craves his father's attention
and never gets it; "Baba smoked his pipe and talked. I pretended to listen. But i couldn't listen, not
really, because Baba's casual little comment had planted a seed in my head: the resolution that I

going to win, and I was going to run that last kite. Then I'd bring it home and show it to Baba. Show
him once and for all that his son was worthy. Then maybe my life as a ghost in this house would
finally be over. I let myself dream: I imagined conversation and laughter over dinner instead of
silence broken only by the clinking of silverware and the occasional grunt. I envisioned us taking a

Symbolism –Rendering the Hidden Meaning of the Story
Symbolism –Rendering The Hidden Meaning of The Story Symbolism is an important element in
reinforcing the meaning of a story. It is a kind of formalist strategies which helps the reader
understand the images that the author is trying to say in words. Symbolism is widely used in "The
Story of An Hour" and "The Cranes", which use conventional symbols, literary symbols, and even
allegory. "The Story of An Hour" is written by Kate Chopin. Mrs. Mallard hears of her husband's
death from her husband's friend Richards. At first, she feels depressed, but then she feels free and
can have her own new life after thinking things through. Sadly, her "new" life is cut short by the

The couple is symbolized as crane but they commit suicide to end their dreadful life suffering from
their sickness. The author uses the water and hull of car as symbols in the story. "the water looked
like metal, still and hard." (Meinke, 259) and "The hull of the car gleamed beetle–like –dull and
somehow sinister in its metallic isolation." (Meinke, 260) shows the symbolization by describing the
water and hull of the car. Both of the descriptions are related to the gun that the couple uses for
committing suicide. They are hard, metallic like, and callous which is just like the gun. These also
symbolize the grim tone in the story. It is stillness because the couple is going to commit suicide.
The final symbol in the story is the direction that the cranes fly to. "...their great wings beating the
air and their long slender necks pointed like arrows toward the sun." (Meinke, 260) After the couple
kiss and close the eyes, the cranes fly toward the sun. This is a symbol of western paradise of
ultimate bliss, which means they kill themselves by shooting the gun to end their lives. Flying
toward the sun is a traditional symbol that says that people will go to paradise after they die. The
combination of those symbols in the story raises the controversy of suicide to the readers. Refering
to the story, the couple chooses euthanasia because they are in pain from sickness. It also raises the

Women's Independence and Self–Assertion
Kate Chopin' short story, "The Storm" contains lots of symbolism which can help break the storyline
down. Although it is a complex story to understand and capture our minds fully, the reader can use
the symbolism in the story to assist in recognizing the ways things are. Symbolism can help the
reader create a better determination of an aspect of the story because it can portray a deeper meaning
of something than it seems. The most significant symbol in the story is the title "The Storm" which
contributes to the theme of the short story. The title symbolizes the internal battle and arrival of a
storm in Calixta's life. Another symbol that can help the reader understand Calixta's nature is the
word "white". Chopin continuously uses this word to indicate Calixta's pure nature. Last but not
least, the atmospheric descriptions allows the reader to distinguish between the social classes of the
main characters. All of these symbols contribute to the overall message the readers can take from
this short story. The symbols in Chopin's "The Storm" are defined by women's independence and
self–assertion in her sexuality.
The title "The Storm" has a lot to do with the theme. The "storm" in Chopin's short story has to do
with the climax of the story and the sexual tension that occurs in Calixta's life. Before Calixta's
sexual desires are fulfilled, Chopin indicates the climax's

The Dependence of Our Society on Technology
During the past two decades technology has seen an explosive progression. In this time we have
come from very few people having personal computers, let alone those that were able to connect to
the internet to having the equivalent of multiple of these machine in our pockets connected to the
internet at all times. In today's society many people opt to use their mobile device over a traditional
computer and these devices make it rather appealing and easy to do so. With applications that are
built to make life easier, games to waste a few minutes, movies and music at the touch of a finger
who wouldn't chose this over the alternative! The problem is when we become too dependent on
these devices. Do we really need to be connected twenty four hours a day? Is this technology
restricting our ability to be productive without it? Can the users succeed in everyday activities like
traveling without these devices? This is a very new topic for argument but one that needs to be
thought about and analyzed. What society must realize is that we are becoming too dependent on
these devices and need to make reasonable concessions or preparations in the case of a failure.
When we take a look at the uses of these devices we will find that they have an absolute plethora of
uses. Smart phones can be used for the original use of making phones calls, but that is really the
simplest use of the device. We can actually use these devices to replace GPS systems and aid in
navigation, play video games,

General Mills were now faced with integrating the two Minnesota based companies. A special
concern that had been brought up was marketing issues. With such household names such as

The use of these types of teams creates the potential for an organization to generate greater outputs
with no increase in, or even fewer, outputs (Stephen P. Robbins 249). According to Beth Gunderson,
the director of organization effectiveness at General Mills, "you can leverage beyond people's
functional expertise. "A person from human resources, for instance, would ask a provocative
question [precisely because] she wasn't a marketer. And you'd see the look on the marketers' faces:
'Whoa, I never thought of that.' " (Gordon).
Aside from the many benefits gained by these cross functional teams, managers face some major
problems. The same qualities that make these teams work, that they are large, virtual, diverse, and
composed of highly–educated specialists, also work against it. Members of these complex, cross–
functional teams are, as long as there are not any outside influences, less likely "to share knowledge
freely, to learn from one another, to shift workloads flexibly to breakup unexpected bottlenecks, to
help one another complete jobs and meet deadlines, and to share resources – in other words, to
collaborate." (Erickson). Some the ways that managers may deal with these issues is to look into the
issues discussed in the next section.
There are a number of items that affect how a team works. These items include roles, norms, status,
group size, and group cohesiveness. Roles are behavior

Status Symbols Of The University Setting
Status symbols in the University setting often do not indicate that somebody is more respected or
thought of more highly than another person because of the symbol, but are more indicative of
certain personal attributes which others can interpret according to conventional wisdom and can use
to identify likeminded people within a diverse pool of peers. There are manifold niches to occupy
within the UNC community, and given that all students are currently working towards the same goal
allows for status symbols to symbolize social accomplishment less according to social hierarchal
structure of rank and popularity and more according to placement among the many essential roles
within the complex web of career paths at UNC Chapel Hill. This makes the general sharing

influencers of social relationships within the University setting. There are so many diverse social
niches to fill here at UNC Chapel Hill, which makes social status symbols rarely reliable for

individuals all on a mostly level playing field. While we come from widely different backgrounds,

The Use Of Symbolism In Paul's Case By Willa Cather
One of the finest forms of writing is the use of symbolism. This representation allows readers to
signify an object, person, situation or word with a feeling or idea. Symbolism is an illustration of
speech that is used when an author wants to form a certain mood or emotion. Readers find stories
easier to associate with when there is a symbol in which is relatable and a multiple uses of conflict
for attention grabbers. An example of symbolic imagery could be a bald eagle that represents
freedom to the United States. In literature, an author utilizes figures of speech, like metaphors and
allegory to explain the symbols being used.
In her story "Paul's Case," Willa Cather provides a short story full of lies and defeat. The story takes
place firstly in Pittsburgh and later to New York, where a young man named Paul goes through life
feeling hopeless and fragile. Cather begins the story with Paul meeting his teachers in the principles
office while wearing a red carnation. To the teachers, the red carnation "was not properly significant
of the contrite spirit befitting a boy under the ban of suspension" (90). Through this initial statement,
"analysis can be extended to include the story's frequent references to other flowers, which also
symbolize Paul's desires and mirror his disconnection from the world" (Crabtree). Cather's tone
throughout the story is dry, factual, and a bit awkward. However, the frequency of the awkward tone
engulfs the reader and mandates constant attention

House Of Mirth Character Analysis
In Edith Wharton's, The House of Mirth, there is an unapologetic use of people as a a sign value in
society. As Lily interacts with others, she is evaluated for her worth; Gus Trenor puts down real
money in order to buy Lily's companionship and Rosedale desires her to be his wife, but it is
primarily so that they can increase their social status. However, men are not the only ones to use
people in this way. Lily evaluates the men on the market, looking to gain a husband to support her
expensive lifestyle. Lily's inability to follow through and marry the wealthy men she captivates is
contrasted with the actions of the other women, making Lily the outlier of this society rather than
the norm. By exploring the events and language within The House of Mirth, the way in which
people are used to maintain or increase social status becomes clear, further distinguished by some
key difference in regards to gender roles. Gus Trenor's use of language goes through a distinct

Scott Fitzgerald, Fitzgerald uses a lot of symbolism to connect the characters with each other or to
other objects. Fitzgerald's use of symbolism helps advance his thematic interest in his novel of The
Great Gatsby. In the Great Gatsby, F. Scott Fitzgerald uses various colors, objects, and gestures as

He also connects the color yellow, on Doctor T.J. Eckleburg's glasses, with the greed and wealth of

Ashes is located between West Egg and New York City, and all it is, is land with the dumping of
industrial ashes all over it. It represents the moral and social decay that results from wealth, as the
rich enjoy nothing but their own pleasure. It also symbolizes the poor who live among the dirty
ashes and lose their strength as a result. "This is a valley of ashes–a fantastic farm where ashes
grown like wheat into ridges and hills and grotesque gardens, where ashes take the forms of houses
and chimneys and rising smoke and finally, with a transcendent effort, of men who move dimly and
already crumbling through the powder air."(27) Looking over the valley of ashes are the eyes of
Doctor T.J. Eckleburg. "The Eyes of Doctor T.J. Eckleburg are blue and gigantic...they look out of

The Beginning Of Expansion Of The Middle Class
Post–World War II United States was a significant period of time when the lifestyle of American
people changed dramatically. Long period of economic booms brought mass suburbanization and
people purchased their own home appliances, houses, and automobiles. As a matter of fact, in the
background of the change of American lifestyle, there were repeated technological innovations.
Successful mass productions of goods accelerated buying activities, which promoted the economic
development in the United States. This was the beginning of expansion of the middle class; some
people get enough money to succeed in having a happy life in the United States with family.
However, when the status of family in a community was considered, proper management of money
was necessary to keep their lives. Handful choices of buying goods or products with satisfaction
made American Dream possible, but buying activities changed the social status of people for better
or worse at the same time.
As is well known, American Dream is an idea of success that can be gained by effort and sometimes
saving money. It generally requires having a good life as a middle–class or higher–class family who
do not struggle with financial problems. Certainly, being able to buy something that a person
"wants" represents that he/she is capable to be at least middle class whether or not they can buy then
and there. Purchasing something one needs and something one wants sounds similar, but they are

The Rocking Horse Winner, By D. H. Lawrence
In literature, a symbol suggests that there is more meaning than what it appears to be. In the short
story "The Rocking Horse Winner," D.H Lawrence uses many symbols that relate to the story's
theme and lets readers apply this to their daily lives. Symbols such as the whispering house, the
rocking horse, and money allude to a deeper truth found in the text. The story not only relates to the
emotional toils Paul's family encounters, but also brings awareness to the realistic run–ins the world
faces today. "The Rocking Horse Winner" is a tragic tale about an overly materialistic mother who is
compulsive about money. She feels no instinctual love for her children and as a result, her son Paul
attempts to earn her love. The word money is an echo throughout the story. Representing obsession,
greed, and despair, the loss of an ideal family and the lack of value for her children, is the major
theme of the story. The family of five's house is described as a pleasant garden–home, made up of
valuables, and also has servants. The house itself has a repeat of "There must be more money! There
must be more money!" Symbolizing that their humble abode is not truly a home, the pleas of greed

Greasy Lake Symbolism Essay
In writing, a symbol is a person, place, or thing that suggests more than its expected and literal
meaning. In "Greasy Lake" by T.C. Boyle, he uses many kinds of symbols to enhance the storyline

prominent, but It can help support the overarching interpretation of a story too. Throughout "Greasy
Lake", many objects have this element of a double meaning that ultimately symbolizing something
bigger than stated. The objects I feel are the most important and impact the story's plot are the lake,
the narrator's symbolic "baptism" in Greasy Lake, and also the Bel Air. In the short story "Greasy

Conbols In Modern Literature: The Use Of Symbolism In...
Symbolism refers to the use of symbols to suggest concepts and possibilities by attributing to them
symbolic references that are far removed from their literal meanings. Symbolism takes diverse
forms. Symbolism supplements double levels of implications to a work: a literal one that is
irrefutable and the symbolic one whose meaning is far more intense than the literal one. Symbolism
makes the plot, characters and the motifs of literature universal. Though the symbol has its origin in
the world of fairy tales and myths and it permeates the literature of the ancient and the medieval
ages, the conscious use of symbolism in literature began with the symbolist movement that took
place in France in the second half of the nineteenth century. Though they were initially the part of a

others made use of symbolism in their works to convey many ideas. Seasons, Colours, and many
other objects are used as symbols to represent the common realities of life. E.g. T. S. Eliot uses
wheel as a symbol in his play Murder in the Cathedral to represent the passage of time.
Myth can be defined as a traditional story, usually concerning some hero or event, which have or
have not a base of a true fact or an explanation, especially the stories that concern with deities and
that which explain some ritual practice or phenomenon of nature. Myths also contribute to and
express the systems of thought and values of a culture. It can also be regarded as a product of man's
imagination and emotion acted upon by his

Symbols and Objectification in Othello and The Great Gatsby

  • 1. Symbols In Lord Of The Flies By William Golding Symbols can ether makes a piece of literature extremely good, or extremely lackluster. Within in the novel "Lord of the Flies" William Golding made use of multiple symbols. In "Lord of the Flies" Golding showed the reader three symbols the conch, the beast, and the log in which Ralph sits and changes these symbols over time and they add a certain symbolic meaning to the allegory. One of the symbols that hold a symbolic meaning but also changes is the conch. The conch represents the 'the high hand of authority' but defiantly changes over time.as the reader can see when Ralph blows the conch the first time all of the others on the island came to the spot where Ralph blew it. It was a signal of sorts and it gave the beholder a certain authority. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 2. Symbolism of Houses in A Doll's House and A Rose For Emily... The state of a flawed society is an issue that many people recognize, but have different ways of approaching it. In the case of William Faulkner's "A Rose For Emily" he examines the raw truth of the act of avoiding a flawed and evolving society. Whereas, "A Doll's House" by Katherine Mansfield portrays the way that a flawed society can change through small acts of resistance that break the boundaries of social hierarchies. Both Mansfield and Faulkner use houses as symbols of a flawed society in their stories, however the manner in which they use these symbols are very different. In a "Rose for Emily", Faulkner uses Emily's house as a symbol of the barrier Emily forms between herself and society. As society moves through generations and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The pairing of the symbols of the house and the character Emily is similar to the way that Mansfield portrays Kezia and the dollhouse. Kezia is one of the central images in the story; she symbolizes the silent opposing side to the influence of a social hierarchy. The story deals with the division of social and economic classes, and it is greatly amplified with the simplified setting of a childhood peer group. Mansfield uses the dollhouse to symbolize all of society. The higher–class, the Burnells, are the only ones that are permitted use it for their benefits. The children admire the "perfect little house" and dote upon every detail of the immaculate house. Kezia, on the other hand, is drawn to "an exquisite little amber lamp with a white globe". This lamp, as the story progresses, symbolizes the small piece of hope, that fixes into the society perfectly, but that no one except for a few people actually see and appreciate it's beauty. Upon noticing this piece of perfection, she criticized the other parts of the house such as, "the father and mother dolls, who sprawled very stiff as though they had fainted in the drawing–room and their two little children asleep upstairs, were really too big for the doll's house...but the lamp was perfect"(119). Her recognizing of the imperfections symbolizes the overall functioning of society. The lower class is symbolized in the Kelveys, who are cast out of the social group, ... • 3. Stereotypes In Lord Of The Flies By William Golding Golding effectively presents characters through symbolism, stereotypes and natural imagery. Golding wrote this book as he wanted to expose the readers to the real worlds death how people are treated in the world. One of the characters that are introduced as a stereotype is 'the fair boy'.The stereotype used to present Ralph is a cool boy who is only friends With other popular boys as he didn't care about the other boy from the beginning as he said "wait a minute" this show that he doesn't care about anything apart of leaving and finding his way out. This character is really important to the novel as it says 'the' in front of 'fair boy'. He is one of the popular boys who has a high status as it says 'piggy looks up at Ralph'. This shows piggy admires Ralph as Ralph is more popular and the cool boy. As Ralph has a high status piggy looks up to him. This also shows piggy has a lower status than Ralph. "The fair boy" can also show the description of him the "fair"could also be referring to his hair colour and the readers were told that in the first paragraph shows his one of the most important characters. Golding also introduces as to another character "other boy" and 'fat boy' he is not popular as he has a low status. Before in the novel Golding calls him "the other boy" clearly from the beginning we are shown that he is not important as we are not even told about any description about him. He is also shown as a really clever child who wears 'specs'. In society people who ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Symbolism In Where Are You Going Where Have You Been Emily Bentley 11/17/2017 Dr. Thorpe Hour 2 Superior Story Between the two short stories both written by author Joyce Carol Oates, "Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been" "Life After High School", it is clear that the story "Where Are You Going Where Have You Been, is the more superior story when comparing literary elements found throughout the story. Joyce Carol Oates uses symbolism, simile, metaphor and imagery to explain what Connie went through. Symbolism is used throughout the story in many way. The first thing stated about Connie is that she has a: [...] habit of craning her neck to look into mirrors or checking other people's faces to make sure her own was all right. (469) Connie feels like she has some kind of control by judging people with her eyes. The observer has control over the observed. When Connie is under Arnold's gaze, when she meets him for the first time in the restaurant parking lot, she can't help looking at him, evening doing a double take. She is interested in him because she feels she has control over him. She likes the familiar interest he has in her. Arnold wants her, Connie knows that, yet Connie is depriving him of her. Later on, when Arnold first appears at her door, he's wearing sunglasses, hiding himself from Connie's gaze, while he is free to gaze at her all he wants. These sunglasses represent the power roles have switching. Connie is observed for most of the story, as an object to be ogled by men or envied by women. The last scene of ... In THS, seniors get the most amount of pivalleges, while the Freshman get very few pivalleges. This is the same thing in the book Things Fall Apart people who have done more significant things in their life are given a title and are placed higher up on the social structure. There are many examples shown throughout the book and Tiger Q that illustrates Status Symbols. In THS the older you get the more status you get, which is the same thing in Things Fall Apart. • 6. Othello, By William Shakespeare Both Desdemona and Daisy are repetitively referred to as objects by the male characters in the texts. From the offset Desdemona is continually objectified by the male characters. Both Rodrigo and Iago refer to her as belonging to Brabantio (her father) where she is aligned with his 'bags', Brabantio states that; 'she is abused, stolen from me and corrupted' (1.3.61). This highlights his patriarchal dominance, it seems that he is more concerned about his reputation, rather than his daughter. This would have been accurate and expected of a woman, as they were seen as the property of their fathers and husbands. Shakespeare structurally objectifies Desdemona through the symbolism of the handkerchief. The handkerchief in Othello and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Although the 'green light' can be interpreted as a symbol of hope, it is further underlined with the same sense of doom as the 'dark waters' as it highlights the loss and tragedy of Gatsby. McMechan suggests that the 'Hollowness of Daisy's soul creates a vacuum into which Gatsby gets sucked into.' Through the constant objectification, such as with the 'greenlight', Daisy is presented as a somewhat vacuous character as she is incapable of feeling desire due to her position in society. Daisy gave up her chance of love for wealth and status by marrying Tom; "she vanished into her rich house, full life, leaving Gatsby" (8.142). The use of listing emphasises Daisy's shallowness and vacancy in a world which she has always been sheltered by wealth and prosperity. The use of symbolism results in Daisy's character becoming unrealistic and 'hollow' diminishing the reader's sympathy for her. Both Desdemona and Daisy's voices are used as lyrical, compelling symbols. Just before her death, in act 4, Desdemona begins to sing: 'a poor soul sat sighing by a sycamore' [...] 'singing willow, willow, willow' (4.3.39–44). The fact that Desdemona is singing a ballad right before her death emphasises the love and affection she has for Othello. However, this love is contrasted with the symbol of the 'willow', highlighting feelings of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 7. Analysis of Edmund Waller's Poem On a Girdle Essay Analysis of Edmund Waller's Poem "On a Girdle" At first glance, Edmund Waller's poem "On a Girdle" seems to suggest nothing more than praise of one woman's fair beauty and the speaker's love for her. After diving deeper into the text, however, it becomes apparent that the speaker does a much better job of praising himself than the woman. His love is more a lust for control and possession than a true declaration of sentiment. Waller uses extreme imagery and exaggeration to seemingly praise this woman. More importantly, however, he subtlety belittles her through tropes and diction. Waller evokes this image of her girdle to express his own desire to restrict this beautiful woman. It cannot be denied that Waller ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Everything he loved about her fit around her waist, her body. Waller is not interested in her brain, her soul or her ideas. He never mentions them. He also never mentions how she might think or feel about him. Waller praises this woman because of her beauty alone and as a result this seems to be her only worth. Within all this praise and admiration the woman is transformed into a status symbol. Waller brags, "No monarch but would give his crown, His arms might do what this has done." "Crown" is an interesting word in this context. A crown is a king's status symbol, but a crown is also a British monetary unit, a way of measuring worth. With this statement, Waller seems to be saying a king would gladly give up his crown, his power, to put his arms around this woman as her girdle does. When viewed in this light the statement appears to be a compliment. Perhaps, however, Waller is actually implying that this woman is as effective a symbol of status as a crown and with her in his possession a king would no longer need to rely on his crown for power. In this case the word "crown" can be seen as an ironic pun. A crown denotes status but can also serve as a way of measuring monetary worth. The woman is beautiful, giving the man status as a crown gives a king. A crown in the monetary sense measures worth and this woman is deemed worthy only by her ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 8. The Life You Save May Be Your Own Short Story Deceitful, dishonest, disloyal: these words describe the shady characters presented in "The Life You Save May Be Your Own," by Flannery O' Connor. In this short story, Shiftlet tries to con an old lady in order to obtain her automobile. By this , the man drives away from his salvation due to his selfishness and hypocritical personality. O'Connor master uses of dark humor reveals to the reader the truth that lays underneath the words of Shiftlet. The beautiful use of color blends with the dark sense of humor by foreshadowing the tragic events that in consequence happens when having a sinful personality. With the punchline at the end, the reader soon sees O'Connor message behind the rain clouds by deciphering the man actions in relation with the stormy weather. O'Connor warns what happens when we try to escape redemption by the use of color that represents every aspect of the story, the representation of symbols to reveal the personality of Shiftlet, and the dark humor that drives the story. O'Connor utilizes color to surrounds every aspect of the short story by detailing what an object represents in relation to how we reach salvation. The beginning of the story starts out with Shiftlet coming to an desolate farm with an old lady and her daughter. Shiftlet arrives with "... a black town suit and a brown felt hat that was turned up in the front and down in the back and he carried a tin tool box by a handle."(O'Connor 23) Not only is his black coat symbolizing death ... • 9. Status Symbol Of The Gang MS-13 For a law–abiding citizen, the status symbols of the gang MS–13 seem peculiar. To be a high– ranking member or, at the very least, a valued member of the group, one must have a high–kill rate. The more you kill, the more precious you become to the group; they know they can count on you to defend their turf and thus you earn yourself a higher place on the metaphorical gang ladder. Similarly speaking, the more turf you defend by killing rival gang members and anyone who threatens your control of the area, the more land you can mark up with MS–13 graffiti. Although this may be considered more of a group status symbol, I believe the concept still applies. Another status symbol in MS–13 is tattoos showcasing your time in prison. If you have a prison ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... A normal citizen's core values may be family–oriented, and MS–13's values are similar to an extent. The gang, although callous, do seem to care for one another – that is, unless they betray the organization like the female in the film who was killed by her gang member friends for telling the police gang secrets. Despite this, like already stated, when a gang member dies, they get a mural painted in their honor – spray–painted illegally, of course. With that being said, the film covered very little on how the gang's members treat their actual blood families; however, I do wonder about the dynamics since gang members are constantly at risk of being sent to prison or being deported. I also wonder that if when a gang member has a child, is that child then part of the gang, or do they get to decide, and do they still have to be beat in? It comes as no surprise, but gang members have vastly different values when it comes to concepts like killing and fighting. Killing is their job and they treat it as such – but this does not excuse their actions in the slightest. Along with this, instead of going through the government, state, county, city, or region to own land, the gang members acquire land in unjust ways such as turf wars with rival gangs that end in fights or murder. On a different note, unlike in a normal American society, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 10. Summary Of The Logic Of Stupid Poor People I wholeheartedly endorse what Cottom calls "The Logic of Stupid Poor People", that poor people buy status symbols to survive in this world. She demonstrates that, as a middle class black girl, her family had a way of turning the tables in their favor in multiple aspects in order to supply their needs and wants. Poor people buy expensive items, sometimes depriving themselves of their other needs, just for the respect of others. These items are 21st–century status symbols, they can single– handedly determine the fate of your everyday encounters. The author uses personal experiences to support her argument, persuasively changing your entire perspective and broadening your mind to another individual's lifestyle. This includes a story of her mother who waltzed into a social service agency dressed in an impressive outfit to set straight an issue that her elderly neighbor had trouble with over the past year in a single day (Cottom 1012). To elaborate, she justifies why poor people ordinarily make the choices they do, while conversely questioning them. In her text, "The Logic of Stupid Poor People", Cottom declares that "We want to belong" (1013). I agree that we want to belong, if you belong you are safe. At one point, her first professional job manager decided she was accordingly ". . . too classy to be on the call center floor." (Cottom 1014) This proves that putting money into a brand name suit can have a positive influence on others, in this case she gained a high pay raise and her workload was decreased. If poor people spend money on classy outfits, the rich people will perceive them as their own. In her last paragraph, she identifies herself as the upperclassman, stating that we rich people ". . . save our money, eschew status symbols, cut coupons, practice puritanical sacrifice to amass a million dollars" (Cottom 1015). This could be classified as a simple jest, to be honest. To me, it sounds sarcastic, which is probably what the author intended. Her argument is informative, yet entertaining. Mocking the snobbish attitude of some who believe they are superior, she skillfully disguises her sentence to appear innocent while the message it delivers is not quite. The point of this sentence is for you to realize ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Jane Eyre vs House of Mirth Lily Essay Jane Eyre vs House of Mirth Lily The novels, Jane Eyre, by Charlotte Bronte, and House of Mirth, by Edith Wharton, contain many similarities and differences of which I will discuss in this essay. The focus will be on the main characters of each book, Jane Eyre, and Lily Bart and will include important points and ideas demonstrated in these novels. To begin, Jane, from Charlotte Bronte's novel, Jane Eyre, was an orphan who was raised by an upper–class family who resented her and did not want her, therefore torturing, abusing, and treating her as someone at a status even lower than the servants. As a child, she knows that her status is awkward and even later on, as a grown woman, she is considered a second class citizen ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... To point out another difference in status between the two characters, Jane Eyre rarely displayed a longing to be part of the higher class, whereas, Lily Bart is intrigued and attracted by it. Another comparison between Lily and Jane can be made regarding beauty. This topic is apparent almost immediately in House of Mirth. In the beginning of the book, it is expressed that, "One or two persons, in brushing past them, lingered to look; for Miss Bart was a figure to arrest even the suburban traveller rushing to his last train" (p.18). He goes on to wonder that, "she must have cost a great deal to make, that a great many dull and ugly people must have been sacrificed to produce her" (p.20). These excerpts demonstrate Lily's external beauty. This notion is made even more obvious in the line, "the qualities distinguishing her from the herd of her sex were chiefly external". Lily was beautiful and charming which may have aided her on her way to popularity. Even her name, Lily, implies beauty and can be seen as an emblem of femininity. Jane is very different from Lily concerning the aspect of 'beauty'. She is not blessed with physical beauty and is described as ordinary and plain. However, Jane consists of a certain kind of beauty, perhaps more important. She is internally beautiful and has the advantage of having the beauty of mental intelligence and ... • 12. English As A Symbol Of Power And High Social Status INTRODUCTION Education is a nation building and globally inter–related activity that unlocks the door to modernization. It is imparted through formal, informal and non–formal ways. For this purpose, there is a need of interaction among the students, teachers and study material. Usually, educational system at the primary level follows the medium of instructions in the mother tongue. But at the secondary level, the students are required to learn one or two unfamiliar languages i.e. English and Urdu. In Pakistan, the students have to study English as a compulsory subject from K.G to graduation level due to the following reasons: i. English is a mean of understanding the foreign and higher educational work. ii. English is an international language used in research, commerce, aviation, diplomacy and source of scientific and technological advancement. iii. English is a symbol of power and high social status. (Rehman, 2004) Language is no doubt an essential part of human life. It is used as a means of communication. Language has been defined in many ways. Some of these are as "a language is a system of arbitrary vocal symbols by means of which a social group operates" (Pahuja, 1994). With the arrival of British in the sub–continent, English replaced the languages of learning and education such as Arabic, Persian and Sanskrit. • 13. An Analysis Of Henrik Ibsen 's A Doll 's House A Symbol of the Times Henrik Ibsen masterfully uses symbolism to add depth and meaning to his play A Doll's House. The story is about a housewife named Nora who gets into trouble when she forges her father's name to borrow money for her husband's sake. Many objects take on new meaning in this story, from the Christmas tree in the opening scene to the slammed door at the end. Ibsen uses Nora as symbol representing how many women in that time period were treated like objects. The literal meaning of this engaging, but the use of symbolism is what makes it a truly powerful story. The Helmers live in nineteenth century Norway. The opening scene is set during the Christmas season, in the apartment of a somewhat average family where Nora and Torvald are married with three kids. The story revolves around Nora, and how she forged her dying father's signature to acquire a loan. In Nora's eyes she had to go behind Torvald's back, so that she could take him to Italy to recover from his illness. Nora must acquire the money to pay off the loan without her husband knowing. The reason being that Torvald is very tight with money, and would not spend so much on himself. The man Nora borrowed from is employed by Torvald, and will soon be fired. Betrayal of friendships can influence the loss of trust which will, in turn, damage the relationships. Khaled Hosseini shows themes of consequences of betrayal and loss of friendship within his captivating novel The Kite Runner. Throughout Hosseini's novel, readers follow Amir, the main character, on his journey to make peace with his past mistakes. To express betrayal's effect on childhood friendships, Khaled Hosseini incorporates captivating vivid imagery, descriptive diction, and figurative language when describing symbols such as the crumbling wall, kite flying, and the scarred lips of both Amir and Hassan. In the novel, The Kite Runner, Hosseini uses symbols that parallel events in childhood and adulthood to emphasize the themes of consequences of betrayal and loss of friendship. Throughout the novel, Hosseini's use of symbols illustrates how betrayal is detrimental to a friendship. By incorporating the symbol of the crumbling wall, the author describes a fallen friendship. In the beginning of the novel, Hosseini introduces the crumbling wall to the readers when Amir states, "I remember the precise moment, crouching behind a crumbling wall" (Hosseini 1). The wall represents the deterioration of Hassan and Amir's relationship, and Hosseini uses the word crumbling to illustrate that. Additionally, Hosseini uses ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Status symbols are things that show a person's social status and they are very present in the world today, as well as in Okonkwo's time. People use things such as the clothes you wear and the car you drive to determine the way they think of you. The world pays so much attention to status now and does not really pay attention to what matters. Sometimes people will flaunt the things they have because they know it will impress the people around them because of how big of an impact status symbols have on the world. The geometry of the pattern is vastly different than the exterior. It hosts a field of angular forms adjoined to their neighbors with repetitious outlines of various colors. Some of these forms contain even more detail. One can pick out latticing, hatching, cross–hatching, and stippling within these shapes. The detail work creates a contrast between interior and exterior, as the artistic production between the spaces is vastly different. It seems like these boxes are made by group effort. Functionally, the jewelry box needs further examination for any comprehension. Its bulky size makes sense in conjunction with the many surrounding jewelry pieces, which are elaborate, heavily ornamented, and chunky. Because the back of the chest was plain and so unlike the rest, it must have been hidden from sight. This could very well mean that the box was fixed in location, like furniture. People are pressured from every direction by advertisements which exploit their deepest fears, attractions, needs, and desires, shaping their behaviors, goals, and thoughts. They are led into believing false information and promises that are mostly never kept, all for the simple reason of selling the product and making profit. We see advertisements everywhere––in magazines and newspapers, on the radio, on TV, online, in the mail, even over the phone. These advertisements use the basic ideas of either providing an elite status with the possession of the product, or giving a sense of belonging to a group or community. The whole patriotic theme is strange because the connection between patriotism and the product does not make the product function better, so why do we feel obligated to pay attention to the advertisement and even purchase that product. Along with patriotism another concept used widely is the elitism the product brings to people with its possession. As Jack Solomon wrote in his essay Masters of Desire, "We Americans dream of rising about the crowd, of attaining a social summit beyond the reach of ordinary citizens" (1). He is basically saying that Americans want to be better then the people around them and this belief is what marketers feast on, creating status symbols like Rolex, Mercedes, BMW, etc. One advertisement that crosses my mind in terms of using elitism would be the new U2 iPod Special Edition advertisement. This promotes an iPod with a black cover and laser engraved signatures of the U2 band members; everything else is similar to a regular iPod; whereas, the price is $50 more. People are led into believing that the U2 iPod is better than the regular one only because it is endorsed by U2. Another ironic detail is that a normal iPod itself is a product of elitism, because even though it has similar functions to a Sony or any other MP3 player, it costs $100 more only because it comes with the signature white headphones. These headphones, unique only because an iPod come equipped with them, have made themselves and the iPod a status symbol. Most ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 18. An Analysis Of Howard Nemerov 's ' The Vacuum ' A Husbands Loss 'The Vacuum' is a poem that was written by Howard Nemerov. The poem uses the theme of symbolism to convey the relationship between a vacuum cleaner and a widower. The poem can be seen as a symbolic description of the experience he is going through after the demise of his beloved wife. The sentence structure and the type of figurative language requires one to evaluate and analyze the poem effectively to understand the meaning. The line in the poem "The vacuum cleaner sulks in the corner closet, its bag limp as a stopped lung" (Mays 580) is indicative of the symbolism that his wife was the housekeeper and when her lungs stopped, the vacuum cleaner also stopped, because she was the one that used the vacuum. Nemrov's poetry shows a consistent emphasis on thought and his poems relate a broad spectrum of emotions and a variety of concerns (Web 1). In 'The Vacuum', Howard brings out the emotions of an elderly man after he lost his wife, which ushered him in a life of loneliness and sorrow. The writer used the 'Vacuum' pun to distinguish between the obvious homemaking profession of his wife and despair of the obvious grieving by her husband. Nemerov did not use the vacuum cleaner symbol as a primary personification since it could have limited the manner in which he outlined the emotions of the gentleman in the poem. However, the use of the vacuum symbolism was perfect in an elucidating emptiness that was caused by the death of the wife. The author uses the vacuum ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

But evidence can be found relating Phoenix's status as a biblical character as well. "The old woman waited, silent, erect, and motionless just as if she were in armor" (84) is reminiscent of the armor of God that Christians must adorn to "be able to stand against the wiles of the devil" (Ephesians 6:11) and the "parting her way" (28) brings the awesome sight of Moses parting the Red Sea to mind. Another example would be Phoenix's comment to the nurse that she and her grandson are "the only two people left in the world" (93) is suggestive of Adam and Eve being the only two people in the world after Creation. More subtle clues suggest the "whispering" (21, 28) of fields being the deceptive whispering of temptation that Satan uses to lure us away from Christ. A theme is the central topic or idea of a story and Symbolism is the action of a character, word, action, or event that has a deeper meaning in the context of the whole story. The relationship between theme and symbolism is that a symbol is often times given to allow deeper thinking into what the author is really talking about and that would be the theme. It connects to A Rose for Emily by the author William Faulkner allowing Emily and a few other objects to be the symbols for the underlying theme which is that she had to die in order for the regime to move forward and progress. There are manifold niches to occupy within the UNC community, and given that all students are currently working towards the same goal allows for status symbols to symbolize social accomplishment less according to social hierarchal structure of rank and popularity and more according to placement among the many essential roles within the complex web of career paths at UNC Chapel Hill. This makes the general sharing practices surrounding social concepts, cigarettes, entertainment media, and illegal substances unique influencers of social relationships within the University setting. There are so many diverse social niches to fill here at UNC Chapel Hill, which makes social status symbols rarely reliable for indicating level of social accomplishment, as the term would thoughtfully indicate. Rather than indicating a tier within a hierarchy, they indicate placement within an immense web of social individuals all on a mostly level playing field. While we come from widely different backgrounds, Chapel Hill students all currently inhabit the same geographic area and are working towards the same immediately foreseeable design. We, as ... In novels, it brings out what is behind the text, and gives you a glimpse of the reality of storyline. A symbol is an object, action, or event that represents something. Things Fall Apart and The Poisonwood Bible contain a massive amount of symbols that gives the reader more realization, background, and what the author's actual intent is for the story. If these two pieces of literature did not contain any symbolism, the plot of the stories would be completely different and change the meaning behind the novel. • 32. The Use Of Symbolism In Paul's Case By Willa Cather One of the finest forms of writing is the use of symbolism. This representation allows readers to signify an object, person, situation or word with a feeling or idea. Symbolism is an illustration of speech that is used when an author wants to form a certain mood or emotion. Readers find stories easier to associate with when there is a symbol in which is relatable and a multiple uses of conflict for attention grabbers. An example of symbolic imagery could be a bald eagle that represents freedom to the United States. In literature, an author utilizes figures of speech, like metaphors and allegory to explain the symbols being used. In her story "Paul's Case," Willa Cather provides a short story full of lies and defeat. The story takes place firstly in Pittsburgh and later to New York, where a young man named Paul goes through life feeling hopeless and fragile. Cather begins the story with Paul meeting his teachers in the principles office while wearing a red carnation. To the teachers, the red carnation "was not properly significant of the contrite spirit befitting a boy under the ban of suspension" (90). Through this initial statement, "analysis can be extended to include the story's frequent references to other flowers, which also symbolize Paul's desires and mirror his disconnection from the world" (Crabtree). Cather's tone throughout the story is dry, factual, and a bit awkward. However, the frequency of the awkward tone engulfs the reader and mandates constant attention ... • 33. Advertising Strategies In Advertising Viktor drives a 2013 Dodge RAM. He realized he was wasting up to $1,000 in gas money a week so he did a little car research. Two days later, he was driving down the freeway on his way home from work. He glanced at a neatly placed billboard of a 2016 Prius with excellent mileage. The car fascinated Viktor. He bought the car right away and traded in his gas chugging truck. Viktor was happy and ready to use the money he will save on a vacation. The ad industry is a necessary evil. This paper will examine how advertisements use marketing strategies to reach the viewer's subconscious. To help prove my point, I will use the 2016 Toyota Prius: Heck on Wheels advertisement. The advertisement starts with what is a content, organized, single, middle–aged man, "momma's boy," with an indoor job, and drives a Prius singing to a metal beat. The advertisements overall focus is to try to convince the audience that The All–New Prius is the new cool. It shows some safety features that come from driving the Prius. The driver Todd Morgan approaches a gas station and shuns the other vehicles for needing to fill up gas it shows the Prius saves a lot of gas. The advertisement is for the "Average Joe". Some marketing strategies used by this advertisement and advertisement companies include gender, social status, and data mining. Social status means the ranking one has in society. • 34. House Of Mirth Character Analysis In Edith Wharton's, The House of Mirth, there is an unapologetic use of people as a a sign value in society. As Lily interacts with others, she is evaluated for her worth; Gus Trenor puts down real money in order to buy Lily's companionship and Rosedale desires her to be his wife, but it is primarily so that they can increase their social status. However, men are not the only ones to use people in this way. Lily evaluates the men on the market, looking to gain a husband to support her expensive lifestyle. Lily's inability to follow through and marry the wealthy men she captivates is contrasted with the actions of the other women, making Lily the outlier of this society rather than the norm. By exploring the events and language within The House of Mirth, the way in which people are used to maintain or increase social status becomes clear, further distinguished by some key difference in regards to gender roles. Gus Trenor's use of language goes through a distinct change during his late night conversation with Lily. The dialogue begins with the usual civilities, but as Lily becomes uneasy with the situation Gus's language shifts into a more business driven tone. It is possible the shift comes because he is accustomed to the language though his job, but it is more likely because he views women as commodities. First, he confronts Lily for not wanting to spend as much time with his as she does Judy and for not giving him attention at the "vulgar party" (Wharton 142) he lowered ... • 35. Symbolism in The Great Gatsby Essay Gatsby Essay Symbols are objects, characters, figures, or colors used to represent abstract ideas or concepts. For example, a dove is usually used to represent peace. In the novel The Great Gatsby, written by F. Scott Fitzgerald, Fitzgerald uses a lot of symbolism to connect the characters with each other or to other objects. Fitzgerald's use of symbolism helps advance his thematic interest in his novel of The Great Gatsby. In the Great Gatsby, F. Scott Fitzgerald uses various colors, objects, and gestures as symbols to portray the lack of moral and spiritual values of people and the different aspects of society in the 1920's. Eckleburg's glasses, with the greed and wealth of the characters. Another symbol used in The Great Gatsby is the Valley of Ashes. The Valley of Ashes is located between West Egg and New York City, and all it is, is land with the dumping of industrial ashes all over it. It represents the moral and social decay that results from wealth, as the rich enjoy nothing but their own pleasure. It also symbolizes the poor who live among the dirty ashes and lose their strength as a result. "This is a valley of ashes–a fantastic farm where ashes grown like wheat into ridges and hills and grotesque gardens, where ashes take the forms of houses and chimneys and rising smoke and finally, with a transcendent effort, of men who move dimly and already crumbling through the powder air."(27) Looking over the valley of ashes are the eyes of Doctor T.J. Eckleburg. "The Eyes of Doctor T.J. Eckleburg are blue and gigantic...they look out of no face, but instead, from a pair of enormous yellow spectacles."(27) The Eyes of Doctor T.J. • 36. The Beginning Of Expansion Of The Middle Class Post–World War II United States was a significant period of time when the lifestyle of American people changed dramatically. Long period of economic booms brought mass suburbanization and people purchased their own home appliances, houses, and automobiles. As a matter of fact, in the background of the change of American lifestyle, there were repeated technological innovations. Successful mass productions of goods accelerated buying activities, which promoted the economic development in the United States. This was the beginning of expansion of the middle class; some people get enough money to succeed in having a happy life in the United States with family. However, when the status of family in a community was considered, proper management of money was necessary to keep their lives. Handful choices of buying goods or products with satisfaction made American Dream possible, but buying activities changed the social status of people for better or worse at the same time. As is well known, American Dream is an idea of success that can be gained by effort and sometimes saving money. It generally requires having a good life as a middle–class or higher–class family who do not struggle with financial problems. Certainly, being able to buy something that a person "wants" represents that he/she is capable to be at least middle class whether or not they can buy then and there. Purchasing something one needs and something one wants sounds similar, but they are different. The economic ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 37. The Rocking Horse Winner, By D. H. Lawrence In literature, a symbol suggests that there is more meaning than what it appears to be. In the short story "The Rocking Horse Winner," D.H Lawrence uses many symbols that relate to the story's theme and lets readers apply this to their daily lives. Symbols such as the whispering house, the rocking horse, and money allude to a deeper truth found in the text. The story not only relates to the emotional toils Paul's family encounters, but also brings awareness to the realistic run–ins the world faces today. "The Rocking Horse Winner" is a tragic tale about an overly materialistic mother who is compulsive about money. She feels no instinctual love for her children and as a result, her son Paul attempts to earn her love. The word money is an echo throughout the story. Representing obsession, greed, and despair, the loss of an ideal family and the lack of value for her children, is the major theme of the story. The family of five's house is described as a pleasant garden–home, made up of valuables, and also has servants. The house itself has a repeat of "There must be more money! There must be more money!" Symbolizing that their humble abode is not truly a home, the pleas of greed relate to the mother's materialism and lack of nurture. As the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... • 38. Greasy Lake Symbolism Essay In writing, a symbol is a person, place, or thing that suggests more than its expected and literal meaning. In "Greasy Lake" by T.C. Boyle, he uses many kinds of symbols to enhance the storyline and make the plot more eerie and dramatic. Not only can using symbols make the plot more prominent, but It can help support the overarching interpretation of a story too. Throughout "Greasy Lake", many objects have this element of a double meaning that ultimately symbolizing something bigger than stated. The objects I feel are the most important and impact the story's plot are the lake, the narrator's symbolic "baptism" in Greasy Lake, and also the Bel Air. (Boyle ___) This symbolic "baptism", is what makes the narrator realize that there is a dark side to life. The symbol is that the narrator has been "baptized" by the darkness of life. Also this is illustrating his own immoral actions from that night as well as the immorality that exists in the everyday world. • 39. Conbols In Modern Literature: The Use Of Symbolism In... Symbolism refers to the use of symbols to suggest concepts and possibilities by attributing to them symbolic references that are far removed from their literal meanings. Symbolism takes diverse forms. Symbolism supplements double levels of implications to a work: a literal one that is irrefutable and the symbolic one whose meaning is far more intense than the literal one. Symbolism makes the plot, characters and the motifs of literature universal. Though the symbol has its origin in the world of fairy tales and myths and it permeates the literature of the ancient and the medieval ages, the conscious use of symbolism in literature began with the symbolist movement that took place in France in the second half of the nineteenth century. Though they were initially the part of a literary group called Parnassians who were as materialistic as the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The symbol communicates the reality without reproducing it. The goal of symbolism as Frederick R. Karl and Marvin Magalaner maintain, 'was to give recognizable external images a spiritual or symbolic value'. Almost all the modern writers like T. S. Eliot, James Joyce, W. B. Yeats and many others made use of symbolism in their works to convey many ideas. Seasons, Colours, and many other objects are used as symbols to represent the common realities of life. E.g. T. S. Eliot uses wheel as a symbol in his play Murder in the Cathedral to represent the passage of time.
