Examples Of Bisexual Stereotypes On Gay
Bisexual Stereotypes
Since the early ages of life being gay or bisexual has has always been frowned upon or considered
"not normal." Living in the twenty –first century ,homosexuals seem to still be portrayed as the
stereotypical personalities given to them long ago. In Amy Zimmerman's, "It Ain't easy Being
Bisexual on Tv," she analyzes and describes her claim about the different stereotypes of bisexuals
on television. Zimmerman uses Piper Chapman from the popular Tv series Orange is the New Black
as a support. Chapman refers to herself as a " former lesbian" who has only ever been interested in
one woman ( Zimmerman 565)
The Author also speaks on Kurt Hummel, a fictional gay character on Glee. She [ Amy] address
how Kurt smugly informs his boyfriend that 'Bixseual's' a term that gay guys in highschool use
when they wanna hold hands with girls and feel like a normal person for a change.' Zimmerman
criticizes the show for claiming to acknowledge the underdogs and "freaks",but simultaneously they
mocks the "myth" of bisexuality (Zimmerman 565). In the reading, Zimmermann also tackles the
idea of " good" homosexual actors and actresses, who are considered role models because they play
authentic roles. The notable examples she use are Max from Happy Endings, the woman that starred
The L Word ,and the cherished Will from the show Will and Grace. Zimmerman explains how the
"good" characters don't change the fact that gay characters are used as

Bisexuality Erasure
Bisexuality Erasure
Saige Brey
Aug 15, 2015 – When you hear the term "bisexual", what comes to mind? For some it's what they
identify with in the LGBTQIA+, for others it's a confusing and broad term that somewhat covers
their sexuality, and for others it just seems like a foreign and strange idea. As a bisexual, I've heard
the question, "Well which gender do you prefer more?" several times. My answer to that is usually
along the lines of 'neither', which leads to some confused looks or even some of disbelief.
To start, bisexuality is not a "Well, you're either straight or gay! Pick one!". Bisexuality is within the
LGBTQIA+ and sexuality spectrum, but it is neither a preference of any of the genders. For some,
yes they prefer a gender, but ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
For example, pansexuality is the attraction to all genders (not just male and female), and
polysexuality is the attraction to some (not all) genders. A plethora of people identify as all three of
these genders, and yes they are real, and some do have preferences, others do not.
Basically, bisexuality erasure is a becoming a prevalent problem in the LGBTQIA+ community, as
well as the straight community. I've had people tell me that bisexuals are just pretending, and then
there's the ever present rumor that bisexual people are just in it for the sex. I'm here to say that's not
true. A bisexual person can like two, many, or all genders, and it has literally nothing to do with sex
or the amount of sex that person has.
However, some people within the LGBTQIA+ community feel like bisexuals are the most
privileged of the sexualities, because they can "just identify as straight if they felt like it" (an actual
person has said this to me before), and haven't felt the homophobia and hostility faced towards the
community. But we have. Bisexuals may not encounter as much homophobia and hostility, but we
still get the constant, "Which do you prefer more, boys or girls?" and the "Well you have to like one
more than the other, liking two (or more) doesn't make

Gay Marriage Should Be Legal
"We're here, we're queer, get over it." In 1990, these words, shouted and displayed proudly on signs
waved by the activist group, Queer Nation, were revolutionary. Never, not since the Stonewall
Riots, had non–straight, non–cis people been so vocal about their existence and demanded
acceptance – something that straight people take for granted on a daily basis. However, in the years
since the Riots, LGBT activism has become much more mainstream, no longer whispered about
behind closet doors or something to be wholly ashamed of. Gay marriage is legal in all 50 United
States, something that has been fought for since the conception of the LGBT movement. In fact, gay
couples are routinely being featured on popular television and other forms of media. Some might
say that in 2016, the dreams of the rioters in Stonewall have been realized. Marriage rights and the
spotlight on nighttime television; equality seems to truly be right on the horizon. If one is a white,
cis, gay man, that is. Gay women are features much less frequently, and gay or lesbian people of
color even less so. With the exception of Laverne Cox on Orange Is the New Black, Netflix's
runaway prison hit, transgender people of color are rarely allowed to grace the television of the
average American. Though some may sing the praises of LGBT activism and claim that gay people
are now so mainstream that there is no need for further discussion to be made about queer issues,
others disagree. Others that were not blessed

Queer And Trans People Of Color, Being Queer, By Katy Harrad
Bisexual people tend to date and have preferences based on society's terms and categories. Being
bisexual can be an exemplifying experience when determining your sexuality for the first time. But
being in one of the most marginalized communities within the LGBTQ it can be very hard to
navigate relationships from both sides of the spectrum. "Being bisexual can be a marginalizing
experience in both queer and hetero spaces" (Rogers 1). Relationships are hard, relationships are
harder navigating with a non–monosexual orientation. For this paper I will be reviewing pieces of
literature; a blog amplifying the voices of queer and trans people of color, Being Queer and Dating
Straight by Kristen Rogers published on January 12, 2016. A magazine article entitled Dating While
Bi, by Katy Harrad. As well as a scholarly article journal, Attitudes Toward Casual Sex, Dating, and
Committed Relationships With Bisexual Partners by Meridee Wilson. I will explore the different
types of relationships and how society will affect a bisexuals dating habit and how people will
perceive the relationship depending on who the person is dating. Website Content and Coverage The

Essay about The Way I am Viewed as a Bisexual Woman
Being a Bisexual
In today's society, how would you feel if someone thought you were abnormal for going against the
odds? For me being a bisexual women, "a person who is attracted to people of both sexes"
(Orndorff, 1999), I usually tend to get some weird looks but I also have people who do not care who
I am attracted to. There are some bisexuals who have monogamous relationships, being with one
partner. Then there are some who have polyfidelitous relationships, meaning "in which three or
more people are all primary partners with each other, are sexual only with these primary partners,
and have a lifelong commitment to one another" (Orndorff, 1999) (Question 1). Being bisexual
doesn't change who I am, or what I do, but it does change ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Since I am open about being bisexual, my family, close friends, and my work are on board with it.
When my girlfriend and I go to a club or a party, men usually ask if they "can watch" (Orndorff,
1999). It really rubs me the wrong way because it's a constant question that we get, and very
annoying might I add. Just because we are two women in a relationship doesn't mean that we are in
a relationship to satisfy every man's dream of seeing two women being intimate. There are many
stereotypes that people have of bisexuals. One stereotype that is placed on bisexuals is that "every
bisexual person feels the need to be involved with both a man and a woman, or that they will have
sex with anyone who is available to them (Orndorff, 1999). Lesbians, too, even have stereotypes
about bisexuals. "Some lesbians believe, that bisexual women are not serious about any relationship
they have with a woman, because (they believe) bisexual women would place more importance on
any relationship with a man." (Orndorff, 1999). Bottom line is that bisexuals do not conform to
these stereotypes, only a handful do (Question 5).
1. "Why do you choose to be with a woman over a man?" 2. "If you and your woman partner want
kids, how would one of you get pregnant?" (Orndorff, 1999). 3. "Since you are both women and are
sexually active, are you still able to spread HIV?"

Myths About Bisexual Dating
Top 3 myths about Bisexual dating
Myths are traditional stories generally told to explain a natural or a social phenomena which
typically involves supernatural or events. Whenever a new social phenomena surfaces, people who
do not like it seek the help of myths to discourage such phenomena. At times people become so
gullible to such myths and keep themselves away from new emerging social trends. This write up
tires to deal myths surrounding bisexuality. In simple terms bisexuality is the tendency to be
sexually attracted towards both men and women. Some think that bisexuals have super power to
deal with different romantic options. But in real life, it is really difficult to hold the bisexual position
by an individual. If married, there will

What Is Bi-Erasure?
What Is Bi–erasure? Oh Wait, You Wouldn't Know!
In a world where we can build kidneys from stem cells or connect to the internet via your watch:
why is bisexuality forgotten about? The phrase bi–erasure is one that you may not know but believe
me it is one you definitely should know. Bi–erasure is defined as the tendency to ignore, remove,
falsify, or re–explain evidence of bisexuality in history, academia, news, media and other primary
sources. The world seems to be celebrating the death of homophobia because America made same
sex marriage legal in all 50 states, but this is not the case. Homophobia is still very present in
society but more than homophobia its biphobia. Biphobia is intense hatred, fear or aversion towards
bisexuals or ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Bi–erasure is so harmful because it attacks all that bisexual people believe in like the media, law and
gay pride. Another thing bisexuals have to deal with is that bisexuals are the least supported and
least served minority group within the entire LGBT community with just .01 % of all LGBT funding
directed toward bisexual projects or programs since 1970. More than bisexuals not being supported
research suggests that bisexuals suffer worse mental health than heterosexuals, lesbians, and gay
men. Bisexuals have higher rates of suicide, self harm, mood disorders and depression than any
other sexuality and one common reason for this is how tough it is to be an "out" bisexual in todays
society. This is one of the biggest factors as to why bi–erasure is so harmful to people. Our culture is
so unaccepting of difference and this could be why people take part in bi–erasure however that does

Bisexuality As A Social Construct Essay
Sexuality and Gender are social constructs. They are more like fluid concepts. Both are on
spectrums. Why could they be considered controversial topics, more specifically the spectrum?
Well, the idea of sexuality being more than just heterosexuality has been challenged by conservative
types and others alike for years. They may even deem anything other than heterosexuality as
something abnormal and immoral. For some, it can be quite difficult to understand that sexuality is
on a spectrum. Especially with identities like bisexuality and pansexuality, it can be difficult for
some people to wrap their minds around that idea. In recent years, the idea of gender being more
than just male and female has been getting more and more attention. It is no longer sex that defines
people, but gender identity, expression, and presentation. They are not fully understood and
sometimes not accepted by people; unfortunately some of that ignorance, and much to my surprise,
come from people within the LGBTQ+ community. A lack of understanding about the spectrums of
sexuality and gender leads to a lot of confusion, hate, and ignorance. The acronym LGBT has
expanded over time to include other identities, becoming LGBTQ+. Whereas heterosexuality means
that a person is attracted to the opposite sex, homosexuality mean that one is attracted to the same
sex. Bisexuality means that one is attracted to both men and women; however the attraction is not
always fifty–fifty; in fact, one can like one gender

This essay discusses the concept that bisexuality is a true lifestyle and not merely a phase of

nature versus ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Many believe that bisexuality is an experimental phase that we go through while trying to figure out
our sexual identity. Others believe that bisexuality is a ploy women use to get the attention of men.
This is simply not true in both cases. Bisexuality is a true third sexual orientation. In this paper I
will prove this point by looking at the works of others who have studied this question. I plan to
answer the question is bisexuality a sexual orientation, something that's temporary or an outgrowth
of the sexual fluidity we all exhibit? In fact one could build a case that bisexually is not just a third
orientation, but is in fact the primary orientation. Man is one of the few members of the animal
kingdom that uses sex for its own sake, to seek pleasure or express love, or give pleasure to a loved
one and not just for procreation. For years most psychological studies have focused on two main
drives shared throughout the animal kingdom. The first of these is the survival of self expressed in
studies of fight or flight, hunger, water and shelter. The second is survival of the species expressed
in the desire to mate and the instinct to protect the young. Mankind too follows these two paths. But
unlike most others in the animal kingdom, and one can argue in the plant kingdom as well, mankind
is willing to take a rest stop periodically. For example, he is willing to enjoy a good meal for its own
sake, not just to satisfy his hunger. This "side street"

Living As A Lesbian, And August Jordan 's A New Politics...
The articles that stood out the most to me were Cheryl Clarke's "Living As a Lesbian" and June
Jordan's "A New Politics of Sexuality". These articles stood out, because while given a similar topic
(lesbians) they both possessed very different, yet similar arguments. I found this interesting because
it is a prime example of societies different views on controversial topics. Cheryl and June's articles
contain many differences, similarities and information to be reflected on.
Cheryl's main arguments are that everyone who loves women (whether its romantically, sexually,
platonically, etc.) is a feminist and lesbians are all part of a rebellion. She states, "No matter how a
woman lives out her lesbianism–––she has rebelled against becoming the slave master's concubine,
viz., the male–dependent female, the female heterosexual." This gives evidence towards her
argument that lesbians, regardless their intentions are resisting from the constructs that society
wants them to adhere to. June would disagree with this statement, arguing that lesbians aren't solely
out to rebel but are just pursuing their lives freely. Cheryl also points out that there is no one sort of
lesbian and that whether you consider yourself a "full blown lesbian" or "bisexual" it doesn't change
the fact that you are resisting against the heterosexual society. This being true, Cheryl Clarke also
disagrees with the idea of bisexuality; whereas June Jordan identifies as bisexual. Following along
with this Cheryl

Differences Between Bisexuality And Homosexuality, And...
Cerny and Janssen (2011) aimed to determine if self–identified bisexual, heterosexual, and
homosexual men show different arousal patterns to videos showing sexual interactions of different
sexual orientations. Past studies had never included a sexual stimulus that was defined as bisexual
(depicting a man having sex with both a women and a man.) Past studies always look at the
differences of a bisexual's stimulation to heterosexual and homosexual stimuli compared to
homosexual's and heterosexual's stimulations. No study had ever had a specific bisexual stimulus
that they could compare bisexuals' stimulation to non–bisexuals. Lots of studies have found the
bisexual orientation does to not exist. There have been many studies that have found little difference
between bisexuality and homosexuality, and bisexuality and heterosexuality. These studies were
based on stimulation and physical arousal. The construct of bisexuality is a foggy one. This study
provides an interesting look into something no one had done before. Having a bisexual stimulus is a
great new variable. However, after dissecting the Introduction and the Methods section there seems
to be some conceptual and methodological weaknesses. The literature that this study is based on is
peculiar for a few reasons. First, they bring up studies that back that bisexuality exists established by
interview and questionnaire studies that measure fantasies, attraction, and behavior. Then right
afterwards they list various

An Analysis Of Bisexuality In Orange
After reviewing eighteen in–depth interviews regarding bisexuality in Orange is the New Black, it
was revealed that the majority of the sample thought the show used bisexuality as a gimmick, but
not the same way the research team had speculated. The respondents observed sexuality as a tool
used to drive the plot forward as various romances among inmates embellished the plotline.
Additionally, highly sexualized scenes in the show were used to draw in viewers. The scenes mostly
featured lesbian relationships because the show is based in a women's prison. One interviewee noted
that the show also portrayed heterosexual sexual encounters, proving that sex in general is used to
amplify the plot. The interviewees identified the female sexual encounters

Gender Identity Is The Assumption Of There Being Binary...
Binary Logic: Another issue with research pertaining to sexual identity is the assumption of there
being binary categories, such as gay/straight, male/female, etc. Research in this area is generally
dichotomized (e.g. male/female, gay/straight), which can foster rigid identity assumptions, foster
homogeneous understanding of research particiapnts and results, foster a divide between 'normal'
and 'deviant' behavior, as well as mask inherent variation in different groups and populations
(Johnson & Repta, 2012). Bringing greater awareness to the complexity of sexual and gender
identity could have transformative effects on how research is conducted. Some scholars in the social
work field have begun to acknowledge and recognize the increasing evidence that sexual and gender
identity are not binary categories, as well that categories might not even be an accurate way of
understanding these phenomena (Burdge, 2007; Roche & Gringeri, 2010). While an understanding
that the binary model is flawed has gained some traction in social work research, the majority of
researchers continue to ignore and disregard this possibility, consequently reinforcing this erroneous
dichotomous paradigm (Rassi, 2011). It has also been noted that critiques from postmodern,
poststructural, and queer theory perspectives, as well as from individuals or groups (e.g.
transgender, bisexual, intersex) who do not "fit neatly" into binary categories continue to remain
essentially absent within social work

The Negative Stereotypes About Bisexual Lifestyle
The second contributing factor is the negative stereotypes about bisexual lifestyle. The political
"treachery" of bisexual women resulted in their connection to sexual promiscuity. Lesbian women
also frequently accused bisexual women of being fence–sitters who were able to "choose" between
having a heterosexual and a lesbian relationship. Katie Griffin, a therapist, once summarized her
bisexual experience into "On any other day, I will be straight. If it's Wednesday, I must be Gay" (1).
In other words, many see bisexual individuals as being 50% gay, 50% straight, and 100% non–
committal. Griffin is certainly not alone in her experiences; in her clinical practice she found that
many bisexual women had to choose between lesbianism and heterosexuality (10). The fluidity of
bisexuality creates discomfort with women who had to go through the tedious process of
pinpointing the gender they are attracted to. Hence, lesbians see bisexuality as a transitional identity
between heterosexuality and lesbianism; notably, 83% lesbians agreed that "some women claim to
be bisexual when they are really lesbians who are afraid to admit it" (Rust, "Neutralizing the
Political Threat" 9). Stone also notes in her memoir that lesbians are often bitter about the "straight–
passing privilege" that bisexual women possess (2). They claim that bisexual women are able to
enjoy the benefits of the lesbian community without receiving the discrimination that comes with it.

I Am Bisexual Essay examples
I am bisexual. Are you paying attention now? Bisexuality holds an interesting position when it
comes to sexual minorities. On one hand, it's seen as the ultimate liberation: "They'll do it with
anyone...how hot!". But when it comes to seeking mainstream social acceptance, we can be seen as
the worst in sexual perversion: "They'll do it with anyone...how shameful!". There are many theories
and opinions on bisexuals, some I agree with, others do not fit my definition of being bisexual. The
important thing is that bisexuality is real, it's not a "transition period" to being gay, a homosexual in
denial, or a person who just can't make up their mind. Being bisexual is a huge part of my identity,

In the 90's, bisexuals have popped up all over the place, from David Bowie to Angelina Jolie and
Ani DiFranco. I think that the gay and lesbian community is among the least tolerant of bisexuality,
many homosexuals have gone through a serious identity struggle and they can't accept this
"halfway" homosexuality. Are we the queer of the queer? Bisexuals aren't people who can't make up
their mind in the same way that people who like both blondes and brunettes aren't called indecisive.
Sexual orientation used to be a black and white thing, you were either gay or you were straight.
During the 40's, Kinsey came up with a sliding scale of sexuality. Suddenly, you could be
somewhere in between, like a percentage. If that wasn't enough, in the 70's Klien made things even
more complicated with a multi–dimensional grid. Now your sexuality ends up looking like the

bisexuality. It's come a long way in the last 20 years.

How Did Freud Support The LGBT Community
From Freud's work, we can gather that he was a strong supporter of the idea that all humans are
bisexual by nature. This was a forward thinking thought for Freud to posses during the era in which
he worked and is possibly even radical by today's standards. While many countries have adopted the
right to same–sex marriage, the fight for equality for members of the LGBT community still
continues. I think Freud would be in full support of the LGBT community.
While Freud would be an ally of the LGBT community, I am sure he would feign his support in a
way that supported his work. I believe this could be mutually beneficial for both Freud and the
LGBT community. Although Freud's work is not scientific, it still highly regarded in many circles.

Film And Television : Stereotypes And Implications
The usage of the word "bisexual" to define an individual's attraction to both sexes has been around
since 1892. Bisexuality itself has been around since the study of world sexuality and in the United
States alone, bisexuals make up 55% of the LGBT community (Gates (2011) p. 4). Yet as recently as
the early 21st century, psychologists have still tried to argue that "most people are one way, some
the other. A very few are truly ambidextrous" (Myers (2003) p.476). Bisexual representation in film
and television is largely portrayed through common stereotypes and implications – when it is
portrayed at all. In television, bisexuality is dismissed as the transitory stage between
heterosexuality and homosexuality. In film, it is minimized to titillation for a male audience or as a
trope for sexual promiscuity. This is largely in part due to the negative stereotypes surrounding the
sexuality and the dichotomous nature of media framing in terms of sexual orientation in an effort to
discourage bisexual visibility. Some of the largest stereotypes surrounding bisexuality aim largely at
the person's inability to "pick a side" and the erasure of their orientation when they finally do.
According to Sharon Sumpter's "Myths/Realities of Bisexuality," the majority of bisexual
stereotypes have to do with the idea that bisexuals are only "experimenting" and either "haven't fully
accepted themselves" or are "going through a phase" (Sumpter (1989)). The latter stereotype is
perhaps the most

The 1981 Hiv / Aids Epidemic
The 1981 HIV/AIDS epidemic was a time of turmoil for the LGBT+ community due to the high
transmission risk of HIV/AIDS between homosexuals (Richardson 5). Tension ran high within
community, as different groups experienced different amounts of discrimination for their
transmission risk. In particular, scholars find that "tensions between lesbian and bisexual women
was much more problematic than tensions between gay and bisexual men" (Udis–Kessler 46).
Despite the similarities of lesbian and bisexual women as non–heterosexual women, the two groups
are politically divided instead of united. What discrimination, if any, did bisexual women receive
from lesbian women as a result of the 1981 HIV/AIDS epidemic? What were the socio–political ...

These two sexual identities are extremely similar but translate to vastly different experiences.
Lesbians are the more prominent group in the LGBT community; they were far more visible in the
media and established their own lesbian feminist organizations before the HIV/AIDS epidemic
(Rust, "Neutralizing the Political Threat" 2). On the other hand, bisexual women lacked the support
communities that lesbians enjoyed during the 1980s. Many organizations and colleges did not
acknowledge bisexual existence until the late 1970s, when the letter "B" was added to the LGBT+
acronym (Hutchins 244). Evidence of tension between the two groups existed in the 1970s prior to
the epidemic, where lesbian groups apparently regarded bisexual women as a political threat
(Tucker 43).
At the start of the HIV/AIDS epidemic, lesbian and bisexual women had similar political standings.
The literature published during this period was largely focused on men. The heterosexual and gay
community was regarded as high risk for transmission, but sex between women was assumed by a
majority of the medical community as having a low risk of HIV/AIDS transmission (Richardson 2).
National censuses of HIV positive individuals gave homosexual, bisexual and heterosexual men
each their own category, but all women were grouped into one large category (Richardson 9). The

The Relationship Between Bisexuality And Its Effects On...
Bisexuality is described as having romantic or sexual attraction to both males and females. This
means that a bisexual woman can be attracted to either a man or a woman and have a meaningful
relationship with either gender. Bisexuality can be transitional but it can also be a stable sexual
orientation no different from lesbianism. With transitional bisexuality women typically experience
attraction towards men and women but soon identify with either heterosexuality or lesbianism. Their
bisexuality is merely a way for them to find out who they are and what they like. Stable bisexuality
means that this is not a stage and it will not simply disappear with age. It is a sexuality with just as
much stability as lesbianism, their attraction towards men and women will remain constant. Both
types of bisexuality exist and are experienced by real women. Stable bisexuality is the more
common type and most women who identify with it do not adopt a different sexuality with age.
Simply because a bisexual woman may marry a man does not make her heterosexual and just
because she may marry a woman does not make her a lesbian. Her sexuality remains the same
because her attraction to both genders does not change.
When concerning bisexuality and friendships there is a stigma that you cannot be a bisexual woman
and be friends with a heterosexual woman because you will be attracted to them sexually. Typically
when looking at friendships people tend to "choose friends who are similar to themselves

Not only is the concept of bisexuality old, but it has even been mentioned in Greek fables of the
early gods. In fact, it is how Tiresias, the blind prophet, is said to have gotten his abilities. As Zeus
and Hera argued over who received more pleasure from sex, they made a bet. Hera claimed that men
received more pleasure, and Zeus bet on women. The feuding couple turned Tiresias, a man, into a
woman. Not long after, they asked her to settle their bet with an answer: women won. Hera was so
furious, she blinded him; Zeus then gave him the ability to see the future.
Number Seven: Holding Power. Bisexuality is no longer something to hide behind. In fact, many
government officials of the modern day have decided to take the leap of coming out. The first to
reveal her bisexuality was Evelyn Mantilla in 1997. Other officials followed her lead, including
Kate Brown, Micah Kellner, JoCasta Zamarripa, and Kyrsten Sinema.

Female Sexual Fluidity Essay
Female sexual fluidity is an interesting topic to discuss. In the text book, Human Sexuality: from
Cells to Society, Rosenthal (2013) explains sexual fluidity as "the idea that a person may change
from other sex–attractions to same–sex attractions throughout his or her life" (p. 236). Rosenthal
went onto explain how men who was in a heterosexual than change their sexual orientation then
they finally found who they are, but for women it is different. However, when a woman switches it

this paper, I will try to dive into the hot topic of female sexual fluidity and how women can change
their sexual identities, attraction, and behaviors in their life span.

Research has shown that women were likely to stay consistent in their sexual behavior with whom
they are attracted to at that moment of time. However, still many women are over a period of time

fluidity is seen more today than back in the day because of what Baumeister (2000) explained,
female sexuality changes depend on cultural, social and situational factors. Diamond and others
explain how sexual fluidity can be a way of coming out to others. However, Diamond did explain
how sexual fluidity does not have to be sexual at all. In Diamond (2008), she explained how it can
be the opportunities around a certain person or emotional connection a person makes. Because we
live in a more open society we see more of a common shift in females than males. Sexual fluidity is

The Pros And Cons Of Homosexuality
In today's world, controversies are everywhere, and impossible to avoid in regular day–to–day
interactions. When you educate yourself on a controversial subject, you often discover how
uneducated and occasionally bigoted other people can be. One such subject is sexuality. As time
goes on, sexuality gains more visibility as a growing number of people come out as gay,
transgender, and other sexual gender orientations. The LGBT+ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans* plus)
community is a supposed safe place for those who identify as queer or trans* (umbrella terms
referring to those who don't identify with heterosexuality and those whose gender identity differs
from the sex they were assigned at birth, respectively). However, as with any rule, people will make
exceptions. Though many offenders deny, obvious discrimination is seen against minority
sexualities, such as asexuality and bisexuality, in forms of jokes and mockeries, invisibility,
mislabelling, prejudice, and in some cases, innocent lack of knowledge, from both inside and
outside the LGBT+ community.
There are multiple aspects to someone's identity including gender, romantic, and sexual identity.
Romantic and sexual identities are similar in their variations. A prefix is placed before –romantic or
–sexual. Some identity prefixes include hetero–, homo–, pan–, bi–, and a–. A romantic identity tells
what genders a given person experiences romantic attraction towards; a sexual identity tells of the
genders a person experiences

National Bisexuality Awareness Paper
This past week was National Bisexuality Awareness week, an event in which many bisexuals and
their allies speak out about visibility and discrimination.
Bisexuality is a common term in modern society, meaning attraction to both sexes. Though this term
has gained more awareness over the past few years, those who identify as bisexual face
discrimination from both the heterosexual and LGBTQ communities.
For example, in one study from the University of Massachusetts. 745 students identifying as
bisexual were surveyed. The results showed that bisexuals face almost as much discrimination from
lesbian and gay individuals as they do from heterosexual individuals.
One common myth that contributes to this discrimination is that bisexuality is a phase, ... Show

Unity will be the main factor in any future victories, as it has been in many human rights
movements. Although identity is important, no individual is defined solely on the basis of their
sexuality, and no label constitutes discrimination, hate, and violence.
The world is so obsessed with defining sexuality for everyone and attaching labels to it. Any time
any person openly leaves the sexual norm, their sexuality becomes, more often than not, the
absolute defining characteristic of that person. It becomes the first thing people think about, and
often the first thing they mention. Every other part of that person all but disappears.
― Dan Pearce from Single Dad Laughing
To those who are gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgender, let me say: You are not alone. Your struggle
for the end to violence and discrimination is a shared struggle. Today, I stand with you. And I call
upon all countries and people to stand with you, too. A historic shift is underway. We must tackle the
violence, decriminalize consensual same–sex relationships, and end discrimination. We must
educate the public. I call on this council and people of conscience to make this happen. The time has
come.

The Is The Romantic And / Or Sexual Attraction For More...
Bisexuality is the romantic and/or sexual attraction to more than one gender. Those who identify as
bisexual are attracted to male, female, and sometimes the non–binary genders. Non–binary genders
can include those who are transgender, agender, and genderfluid. Bisexuality is a separate sexuality
from pansexuality. Pansexuality which is the romantic and/or sexual attraction to all genders. Like
the sexuality and gender spectrums bisexuality is also a spectrum. One can be bisexual but only
desire those of the male and female gender. Another could only find those who are non–binary and
the female gender attractive, ect.
Within the mainstream and LGBTQ+ communities the issue of bisexual erasure is quite prevalent.
Bisexual erasure is the act of ignoring or removing the existence of bisexuality from primary
sources. Bisexual erasure is a form of biphobia, the aversion to bisexuality and bisexual people. It
can also include the denial of the existence of bisexuality. Female bisexuality has been the most
ignored and unbelieved form of bisexuality. Today's denial of female bisexuality is a product of
traditional disenfranchisement of female sexuality. By comparing John Wilmont, Earl of Rochester's
poem "Song" to Aphra Behn's poem "To the Fair Clarinda" the existence and erasure of female
bisexuality becomes clear. Rochester, a known bisexual, wrote "Song" in 1680. The work focuses on
the narrator's, Rochester's, view on choosing women as romantic partners. The poem

Analysis Of The Movie Orange Is The New Black
The Netflix original series, Orange Is the New Black takes a "consumerist approach to sexuality," by
repetitively featuring sexual relations among inmates as a way to attract viewers. (Schwan) Orange
Is the New Black neglects to explore emotional attachment beyond a need to fulfill sexual needs and
minimize loneliness while in prison. Bisexual female characters, if given the opportunity, often
leave their female partner for a relationship with a male, downgrading the realism of an actual
bisexual lifestyle. Although lesbian activity is presented throughout, only women with this body
type are presented in a highly sexualized male gaze viewpoint. (TrierBieniek) The sexual relations
presented display an "objectifying, exploitative portrayal of lesbian sexuality." (Schwan) Although,
Orange Is the New Black's cast is exceptionally diverse, the show only films sex scenes between
slender inmates. Ultimately, the show presents LGBTQ characters in a non–threatening light, but
features bisexuality as a temporary sexual encounter of convenience.
Orange Is the New Black's prison setting follows a fictional trend of connecting "female same–sex
desire and mental and criminal pathology." (Filippo) The show's oversexed storyline "reinforces
society's stereotypes and female prisoners: that they are violent, worthless, sex–crazed monsters."
(Cecil) Also, illustrating "bisexuality and other forms of "deviant" female sexuality are likened more
to mental and criminal deviance." (Filippo) The

Psychological Effects of Bisexuality
What is bisexuality? Synthesizing the predominant theories of bisexuality, Smiley (1997) suggested
the following definition: Bisexuality is a sexual orientation in which an individual: experiences a
combination of sexual and affectional attractions to members of both sexes; engages to varying
degrees in sexual activities with both sexes; and self–identifies as bisexual in a way that is
consonant with personal, social, political, and lifestyle preferences (Smiley, 375). Bisexual and the
transgender people are two less visible segments of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender

their mind something is abnormal they can come up with as many reasons as to why it is so, and if
there are people who think otherwise, they too can come up with a variety of reasons to prove their
point. Why can't we approach this from a humanistic viewpoint that people have the right to love
whomsoever they want to, as long as it is consensual?" Tommy is very content with the bisexual
lifestyle he is living. He seems to not know whether or not he will always be this way. I got a sense
from our interview that he wasn't happy being this way. He begin the express the importance of how

than one occasion. He seems to be confused as to what he really wants. It is a battle for him to be
with a woman and be attracted to a man that is in the same company. Tommy at the present lives by
himself so he doesn't feel as if there are any rules he has to live with. He currently resides in the
Hollywood area. He is comfortable living this lifestyle and his community contributes to this.

The Psychology Of Sexual Orientations
The Psychology of Sexual Orientations Throughout the history of humans, people have been having
sex. It's obviously necessary for the continuation of humans as a species. But it definitely hasn't
been for just reproductive purposes. People have been engaging in same–gender sex for probably as
long as humans have been around. However, the terms we think of today when we think of different
sexual orientations didn't get coined until the 19th and 20th centuries. And with these terms came
huge stigma that still exists today. There are many different sexual orientations that people identify
as (including heterosexuality, homosexuality, bisexuality, as well as many others); the orientations
that do not coincide with what people viewed as normal were originally given classification as
mental disorders.
The most common sexual orientation, regardless of culture, is heterosexuality. This is defined as a
sexual orientation in which an individual is generally sexually attracted to members of the opposite
sex. A Centers for Disease Control national survey "reported that the percentage of Americans who
identify themselves as heterosexual was 90 percent for men and women" (King, 2011, p. 363). This
orientation is also considered by many people, cultures and religion throughout history and into the
present as being the "normal" and "natural" orientation, with the idea that any deviation from
heterosexuality is unnatural, a choice, and a thing that needs to be corrected. This belief,

movements and ideas during these decades but also our own historical moment. This paper, which
relies on primary sources, situates questions of sexual object choice, gender non–conformity,
racialization, and "bisexuality" in the historical moment(s) of the 70's. I intentionally write in

Gothic review
'To understand the chronicles they must be read as gay' , at least this is the incredibly bold statement
made by George Haggerty in his chapter on Anne Rice and the Queering of Culture in his book
Queer Gothic. There is no denying that Anne Rice's Vampires have a lot to do with homosexuality
and Haggerty's highlighting this is in no way a new criticism, but the claim that is must be read as
gay is entirely dismissive of the many other sexual paradigms that exist within The Vampire
Chronicles.
To begin with, his referral of Lestat as a 'gay predator' seems unfair in its definition. The fact of his
being a vampire automatically asserts him as a 'predator', but his relationships are not exclusively
homosexual. He is a vampire that merely ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Yet, in Blood Canticle, written five years after Haggerty's essay, it is Rowan who Lestat finally and
selflessly loves – selflessness not being an attribute we have known greatly in his character until this
point. As Haggerty says, Rice is 'eroticizing the gay man' whilst at the same time undermining it by
portraying the homosexual relationships as heavily sexual, violent and deviant in comparison to the
more nurturing, romantic relationship Lestat has with Rowan.
The Vampires in the novels explore sexual deviancy, but are always ultimately punished in doing so.
The homosexual parentage of Louis and Lestat to Claudia and of Armand to Sybelle and Benji are
both destroyed in their own way. Claudia and Louis' final rejection of Lestat and Armand's failure in
being able to protect Sybelle and Benji from Marius, are both examples of homosexual families
being explored and then finally being punished for going against the accepted social norm of 20th
century culture. This supports Haggerty's claim that readers want to 'explore unauthorized desires
and at the same time see them bleed', by exploring and then destroying homosexual relationships
repeatedly throughout the collection. When reading the characters as 'homosexual' as Haggerty
suggests, this punishment dynamic makes it unavoidable to find truth in Haggerty's claim that Rice

Dismantling Binaries: Bisexuality
Dismantling binaries
Introduction
The process of social differentiation is the key to the survival and perseverance of social inequality.
Once constructed, these boxes automatically build a vested interest in keeping them. Without a
procedure of making difference among people or by developing a way to tell dissimilar types of
people, there would be no source for treating people differently. This disparity treatment is not
essentially unequal, social disparity but it boils down to treating people differently.
Lucal, in his article focuses on the building and preservation of boxes and limits with respect to sex,
gender and sexuality. In the society, these boxes and their limits rest on a multiplicity of
assumptions. The first supposition is that there are two sex's genders, and sexualities. Everyone is
male or a female, feminine or masculine, heterosexual or homosexual but no one can be both. This
supposition of sex believes the truth of substantial difference in how persons actually do gender but
yet people carry on to believe that there are just two equally elite gender groups into which every
person can easily be positioned. (Lucal, B.2008)
The second postulation is that sex and gender are congruent in that, human beings who belong to a
sex category are unspecified to belong to a gender class that relate to that sex. People not only
presuppose that sex and gender are matching, but they depend on that correspondence to choose
how to interrelate with people. They presume

Sexual Orientation, Homosexuality, And Bisexuality
Sexual Orientation can be defined as the persistent pattern of romantic or sexual attraction to
another. The opposing person who you are attracted to can either be of the opposite sex, the same
sex, or to both sexes. Although these are the three main categories, there are sometimes minor
categories that can be used to define sexual orientation as well. This could be where they may
consist of being attracted to different gender identities, maybe innate objects, or may not even be
attracted to anything at all. Whatever it may be, sexual orientation is not a choice and cannot be
changed manually.
The three main attractions are generally labelled under heterosexuality, homosexuality, and
bisexuality. People who are attracted to members of the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
These people have to face society when people constantly discriminate them on a large scale. This
can so often have you feeling like you are alone in the world and lead to common mental health
issues. Common mental health issues within them include depression, anxiety, substance abuse
problems with family and relationship issues. So that all the people who are of other sexual
orientations feel like they are not alone, they created the LGBTQ community. (McGarrity)
The L stands for lesbians for the women who are attracted to other women. The G stands for gay
men for the men who are attracted to other men. The B stands for bisexuals for the men and women
who are attracted to both women and men. The T stands for transgendered. The term transgendered
is a broad term that includes cross–dressers, transsexuals, and people who live their lives as the
gender other than their birth gender. Transgender people can be straight, gay, lesbian, or bisexual.
The Q stands for questioning meaning if someone who is questioning their sexual and/or gender
orientation.
People think that sexual orientation is something that is "caused" or "developed". This is not the
specific case because researchers can show that it is based on biological factors that are in place
before birth. This means that it can come from studies of family histories and genes. Plenty of
research has been conducted to determine the influence of genetics,

Bisexual people may be men, women, transgender, or genderqueer. They may be monogamous or
abstinent or may have multiple sexual partners, just like heterosexual and lesbian and gay people.
Many people are bisexual and bisexuality cuts across distinctions of race/ethnicity, gender identity,
age, class, ability, and religious affiliation.
Some says that a person who has intimate relationships with both men and women doesn't consider
herself bisexual or of any sexual orientation for that matter. I think that today, we are seeing more
people displaying an attraction to another individual based mostly on what their personality has to
offer, rather then their 'plumbing'. I find this an interesting concept and I think I do believe that what
it boils down to is the love you have for the person despite their anatomy, though I have yet to
experience feelings like this myself. One of the main problems that bisexual people face is the idea
that bisexuality is not a "real" sexual orientation. This belief is held by not only the heterosexual
community but by the homosexual community as well. Many people think of bisexuality as a
transition into becoming gay or as a denial of oneself being gay. This belief is damaging not only
because it refuses to acknowledge that bisexuality exists, but it also restricts a person's love and
affection to only one gender (either same–sex or opposite) and it refuses to take into consideration
that someone could be attracted to or love people of

The Historical Prevalence Of Bisexuality Essay
The historical prevalence of bisexuality is hard to determine because same–sex sexual activity has
traditionally been very stigmatized; furthermore bisexuality is often ignored in historical discussions
of sexual orientation. Nonetheless, over the past few decades, the status quo with regard to same–
sex sexual activity has changed drastically. The repeal of anti–gay laws and the 2003 supreme court
decision Lawrence v. Texas which eliminated all remaining sodomy laws in the United States, the
removal of homosexuality from its designation as a sexual disorder in the DSM, the existence of
high–profile LGBTQ figures, and the push for, and legalization of gay marriage in the United States
and other western countries have all been significant contributing factors toward the normalization
of same–sex sexual activity. The general public has experienced increased exposure to the LGBTQ
community, and as a result, acceptance of sexual minorities, including bisexual individuals, has
grown.
In spite of the progress toward acceptance of bisexual individuals, many people still view sexual
orientation as dichotomous, which contributes to the erasure and/or invisibility of the bisexual
community (Alarie & Gaudet 2013). Some also perceive bisexuality as a "transitional identity"
between heterosexuality and homosexuality, or believe that people who identify as bisexual are just
too afraid to come out as homosexual (Israel and Mohr 2003; Alarie & Gaudet 2013). Some studies

Sociological Attitudes Toward Gender And Sexuality
When analysing the current state of sociological attitudes toward gender and sexuality, the
overwhelming conclusion is that the hegemonic view in society assumes an inherent binary (Lorber
via Steele, 2005, p.75). We categorize people into two groups: male or female; man or woman;
masculine or feminine; gay or straight. However, throughout humanity's development, variances to
that model have emerged, either choosing to sit somewhere between the binary, or reject the model
altogether. These variations challenge the binary assumptions entrenched within society, and as a
result, are often denied, misunderstood or ignored entirely.
Enter bisexuality. Put simply, the concept of bisexuality is a sexual orientation that lies in the space
between heterosexuality and homosexuality. However, society's assumption of sexual essentialism,
the idea that sexual orientation is fixed and absolute, has led to a culture that is "uncomfortable with
people who are sexually ambiguous (Valverde via Naugler, 2012, p. 87). This urges society to
assume that, despite the existence of bisexuality, people are really either gay or straight (Valverde
via Naugler, 2012, p. 83). This is the phenomenon of bisexual erasure (Eisner, 2013, p. 89).
Bisexual erasure affects both bisexual men and women in various ways; however, this essay will
focus on the erasure of bisexuality in men in particular.
There is a distinctive public perception when it comes to bisexuality in men: that they don't exist at
all. Denial

Sexuality As A Social Construct

Sexuality as a Social Construct
Heternormativity is the idea that there exist two distinctive classifications of the genders, males and
females, with customary roles in society. The idea asserts that heterosexuality is the only normal
sexual orientation of people and that all sexual and marital relations must abide by this norm.
Society has adopted this belief and constructed it into a standard of life. It is normal for people to
automatically presume that most other people are heterosexual and that heterosexuality is the default
sexual preference. Thus, all other sexualities that are nonheterosexual are a deviation of the default.
Heterosexuality is the most appreciative and is the most acceptable sexuality for a man and ... Show

Monogamous, reproductive heterosexuality is also valued socially above all other forms of
sexuality. Society has constructed the belief that heterosexuality is the ideal sexual identity, and
society subsequently critiques non–heterosexual identities, such as gays, bisexuals, and trans, which
all fall outside this custom.
As a consequence of society deeming heterosexuality as the ideal sexuality, sexualities that are
biologically infertile are less socially acceptable in society. Nonheterosexuals are seen as deviants
and consequently mocked and ridiculed by society. Gayle proposes that same sex relationships are
inferiors, but, "stable, long–term lesbian and gay couples are verging on respectability, but bar dykes
and promiscuous gay men are hovering just above the groups at the very bottom of the pyramid."
For instance, society already considers gay males to be lower on the hierarchy, but those males,
which are less masculine, are even lower on the pyramid. Society has constructed these "less
masculine" gays to be "more gay". However, homosexual males that still obtain monogamous
relationships are more appreciated in respect to gays who are not in relationships. For example,
famous gay couples such as Ellen DeGeneres's relationship, and the gay marriage portrayed on
Modern Family, are valued in society. These are higher up on the pyramid because both gay couples
are in stable relationships that

No Right Or Wrong?
The LGBTQIA+ acronym is always growing and changing, which sometimes makes it hard for
those outside the community, and even those inside, to understand what each of the letters stand for.
Because of these changes and complexities, many identities are often left out, misrepresented, or
misunderstood. One of these identities is bisexuality. Bisexuality has many definitions and has many
sexual orientation identifications that branch off of it, many of which have popped up in recent
years. Yet, what people do not realize is that bisexuality, like many other sexual orientations, can be
fluid and different for each person choosing to identify with it. There is no right or wrong definition;
yet we normally only see one definition when bisexuality is talked about. And that is if it is talked
about at all. Bisexuality is often left out of LGBTQIA+ representation, or is portrayed in a
stereotypical way that makes it hard for those struggling with identifying their sexual orientation to
find a label that fits for them.
The most common definition of bisexuality is found when you do a simple Google search of
"bisexual": "sexually attracted to both men and women." Yet, looking up "bisexuality" gives you
something different: "bisexuality is romantic attraction, sexual attraction, or sexual behavior toward
both males and females, or romantic or sexual attraction to people of any sex or gender identity; this
latter aspect is sometimes termed pansexuality" (Google). As seen from the

Nothing To Be Mere About Being Bisexuality?
Nothing to be ashamed about being bisexual. You may fear for the criticism you may get levelled
against you for being bisexual, but understand that it's your freedom to live the life you want and
none other than you have any say in it. Only thing is that, often people get confused when they hear
the word bisexual and tend to pass on their judgement through their coloured glasses. For a person
who is not heterosexual, it is difficult to deal with the issue of bisexuality as it would be
heartbreaking and difficult to deal emotionally. One must understand that a woman being bisexual
doesn't mean that she is prepared to have sex freely with men and women. Bisexual women are not
for your sexual entertainment and if you have any such ideas in your mind to spend some time ,
refrain approaching women with that kind of a wrong notion. Relationship never develops that way.
If your girl friend is prepared lift her veil and tell you about her relationship with another woman,
treat her kindly and with care. If she is prepared to have relationship with you and you are prepared
to take the things revealed by her in stride, it would be good for you and her. In case you are not

Homosexuality: Categories Of Discrimination Or Homophobia
Frann Michel describes bisexuality as "the category that disrupts categories" in her literature review
from 1998 on three books discussing bisexuality. Research indicates that bisexual people experience
discrimination or "homophobia" generally associated with queer (meaning non–heterosexual, for the
purposes of this review) sexual orientation and also discrimination specifically targeting bisexual
identity. Furthermore, they experience this intolerance from gay/lesbian individuals as well as
straight people. Historically, bisexual people have had the worst mental health amongst all
sexualities and experts have proposed these extra stressors are a reason why.
Since 2008 homosexuals have been increasingly accepted into mainstream society, as ... Show more

Frann Michel adds to this definition that the attraction can be to more than one gender, not
necessarily male or female. Freud used bisexuality in his oedipal theory to describe the state a baby
is born in before they decide to be heterosexual or homoesexual. This origin is where much of the
stigma around bisexuality began. Stigma and stereotyping are mechanisms even used by other
members of the queer community that marginalize bisexuals. While this impact is mirrored in
homophobia and racism, bisexuals specifically are often excluded from other minority groups.
The majority, and nearly entirety, of research on bisexual people was published after 1990 and initial
authors like Loraine Hutchins, Lani Ka'ahumanu and Sue George collected anecdotal evidence and
conducted surveys to analyze and bring awareness to bisexual issues. These early authors
considered the unique challenges and stigmas bisexuals faced which later led later authors to look at
the impacts of these social

Examples Of Bisexual Stereotypes On Gay

  • 1. Examples Of Bisexual Stereotypes On Gay Bisexual Stereotypes Since the early ages of life being gay or bisexual has has always been frowned upon or considered "not normal." Living in the twenty –first century ,homosexuals seem to still be portrayed as the stereotypical personalities given to them long ago. In Amy Zimmerman's, "It Ain't easy Being Bisexual on Tv," she analyzes and describes her claim about the different stereotypes of bisexuals on television. Zimmerman uses Piper Chapman from the popular Tv series Orange is the New Black as a support. Chapman refers to herself as a " former lesbian" who has only ever been interested in one woman ( Zimmerman 565) The Author also speaks on Kurt Hummel, a fictional gay character on Glee. She [ Amy] address how Kurt smugly informs his boyfriend that 'Bixseual's' a term that gay guys in highschool use when they wanna hold hands with girls and feel like a normal person for a change.' Zimmerman criticizes the show for claiming to acknowledge the underdogs and "freaks",but simultaneously they mocks the "myth" of bisexuality (Zimmerman 565). In the reading, Zimmermann also tackles the idea of " good" homosexual actors and actresses, who are considered role models because they play authentic roles. The notable examples she use are Max from Happy Endings, the woman that starred The L Word ,and the cherished Will from the show Will and Grace. Zimmerman explains how the "good" characters don't change the fact that gay characters are used as ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 2. Bisexuality Erasure Bisexuality Erasure Saige Brey Aug 15, 2015 – When you hear the term "bisexual", what comes to mind? For some it's what they identify with in the LGBTQIA+, for others it's a confusing and broad term that somewhat covers their sexuality, and for others it just seems like a foreign and strange idea. As a bisexual, I've heard the question, "Well which gender do you prefer more?" several times. My answer to that is usually along the lines of 'neither', which leads to some confused looks or even some of disbelief. To start, bisexuality is not a "Well, you're either straight or gay! Pick one!". Bisexuality is within the LGBTQIA+ and sexuality spectrum, but it is neither a preference of any of the genders. For some, yes they prefer a gender, but ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... For example, pansexuality is the attraction to all genders (not just male and female), and polysexuality is the attraction to some (not all) genders. A plethora of people identify as all three of these genders, and yes they are real, and some do have preferences, others do not. Basically, bisexuality erasure is a becoming a prevalent problem in the LGBTQIA+ community, as well as the straight community. I've had people tell me that bisexuals are just pretending, and then there's the ever present rumor that bisexual people are just in it for the sex. I'm here to say that's not true. A bisexual person can like two, many, or all genders, and it has literally nothing to do with sex or the amount of sex that person has. However, some people within the LGBTQIA+ community feel like bisexuals are the most privileged of the sexualities, because they can "just identify as straight if they felt like it" (an actual person has said this to me before), and haven't felt the homophobia and hostility faced towards the community. But we have. Bisexuals may not encounter as much homophobia and hostility, but we still get the constant, "Which do you prefer more, boys or girls?" and the "Well you have to like one more than the other, liking two (or more) doesn't make ... • 3. Gay Marriage Should Be Legal "We're here, we're queer, get over it." In 1990, these words, shouted and displayed proudly on signs waved by the activist group, Queer Nation, were revolutionary. Never, not since the Stonewall Riots, had non–straight, non–cis people been so vocal about their existence and demanded acceptance – something that straight people take for granted on a daily basis. However, in the years since the Riots, LGBT activism has become much more mainstream, no longer whispered about behind closet doors or something to be wholly ashamed of. Gay marriage is legal in all 50 United States, something that has been fought for since the conception of the LGBT movement. In fact, gay couples are routinely being featured on popular television and other forms of media. Some might say that in 2016, the dreams of the rioters in Stonewall have been realized. Marriage rights and the spotlight on nighttime television; equality seems to truly be right on the horizon. If one is a white, cis, gay man, that is. Gay women are features much less frequently, and gay or lesbian people of color even less so. With the exception of Laverne Cox on Orange Is the New Black, Netflix's runaway prison hit, transgender people of color are rarely allowed to grace the television of the average American. Though some may sing the praises of LGBT activism and claim that gay people are now so mainstream that there is no need for further discussion to be made about queer issues, others disagree. Others that were not blessed ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Queer And Trans People Of Color, Being Queer, By Katy Harrad Bisexual people tend to date and have preferences based on society's terms and categories. Being bisexual can be an exemplifying experience when determining your sexuality for the first time. But being in one of the most marginalized communities within the LGBTQ it can be very hard to navigate relationships from both sides of the spectrum. "Being bisexual can be a marginalizing experience in both queer and hetero spaces" (Rogers 1). Relationships are hard, relationships are harder navigating with a non–monosexual orientation. For this paper I will be reviewing pieces of literature; a blog amplifying the voices of queer and trans people of color, Being Queer and Dating Straight by Kristen Rogers published on January 12, 2016. A magazine article entitled Dating While Bi, by Katy Harrad. As well as a scholarly article journal, Attitudes Toward Casual Sex, Dating, and Committed Relationships With Bisexual Partners by Meridee Wilson. I will explore the different types of relationships and how society will affect a bisexuals dating habit and how people will perceive the relationship depending on who the person is dating. Website Content and Coverage The audience for the website is geared toward the general public. The information is primary in nature, since this is her view point and her background information. This does provide an in–depth information on a specific topic since this is the story from the author's perception. The page does not link to other reputable sources ... • 5. Essay about The Way I am Viewed as a Bisexual Woman Being a Bisexual In today's society, how would you feel if someone thought you were abnormal for going against the odds? For me being a bisexual women, "a person who is attracted to people of both sexes" (Orndorff, 1999), I usually tend to get some weird looks but I also have people who do not care who I am attracted to. There are some bisexuals who have monogamous relationships, being with one partner. Then there are some who have polyfidelitous relationships, meaning "in which three or more people are all primary partners with each other, are sexual only with these primary partners, and have a lifelong commitment to one another" (Orndorff, 1999) (Question 1). Being bisexual doesn't change who I am, or what I do, but it does change ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Since I am open about being bisexual, my family, close friends, and my work are on board with it. When my girlfriend and I go to a club or a party, men usually ask if they "can watch" (Orndorff, 1999). It really rubs me the wrong way because it's a constant question that we get, and very annoying might I add. Just because we are two women in a relationship doesn't mean that we are in a relationship to satisfy every man's dream of seeing two women being intimate. There are many stereotypes that people have of bisexuals. One stereotype that is placed on bisexuals is that "every bisexual person feels the need to be involved with both a man and a woman, or that they will have sex with anyone who is available to them (Orndorff, 1999). Lesbians, too, even have stereotypes about bisexuals. "Some lesbians believe, that bisexual women are not serious about any relationship they have with a woman, because (they believe) bisexual women would place more importance on any relationship with a man." (Orndorff, 1999). Bottom line is that bisexuals do not conform to these stereotypes, only a handful do (Question 5). 1. "Why do you choose to be with a woman over a man?" 2. "If you and your woman partner want kids, how would one of you get pregnant?" (Orndorff, 1999). 3. "Since you are both women and are sexually active, are you still able to spread HIV?" ... • 6. Myths About Bisexual Dating Top 3 myths about Bisexual dating Myths are traditional stories generally told to explain a natural or a social phenomena which typically involves supernatural or events. Whenever a new social phenomena surfaces, people who do not like it seek the help of myths to discourage such phenomena. At times people become so gullible to such myths and keep themselves away from new emerging social trends. This write up tires to deal myths surrounding bisexuality. In simple terms bisexuality is the tendency to be sexually attracted towards both men and women. Some think that bisexuals have super power to deal with different romantic options. • 7. What Is Bi-Erasure? What Is Bi–erasure? Oh Wait, You Wouldn't Know! In a world where we can build kidneys from stem cells or connect to the internet via your watch: why is bisexuality forgotten about? The phrase bi–erasure is one that you may not know but believe me it is one you definitely should know. Bi–erasure is defined as the tendency to ignore, remove, falsify, or re–explain evidence of bisexuality in history, academia, news, media and other primary sources. The world seems to be celebrating the death of homophobia because America made same sex marriage legal in all 50 states, but this is not the case. Homophobia is still very present in society but more than homophobia its biphobia. Biphobia is intense hatred, fear or aversion towards bisexuals or ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Bi–erasure is so harmful because it attacks all that bisexual people believe in like the media, law and gay pride. Another thing bisexuals have to deal with is that bisexuals are the least supported and least served minority group within the entire LGBT community with just .01 % of all LGBT funding directed toward bisexual projects or programs since 1970. More than bisexuals not being supported research suggests that bisexuals suffer worse mental health than heterosexuals, lesbians, and gay men. Bisexuals have higher rates of suicide, self harm, mood disorders and depression than any other sexuality and one common reason for this is how tough it is to be an "out" bisexual in todays society. This is one of the biggest factors as to why bi–erasure is so harmful to people. Our culture is so unaccepting of difference and this could be why people take part in bi–erasure however that does not excuse ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 8. Bisexuality As A Social Construct Essay Sexuality and Gender are social constructs. They are more like fluid concepts. Both are on spectrums. Why could they be considered controversial topics, more specifically the spectrum? Well, the idea of sexuality being more than just heterosexuality has been challenged by conservative types and others alike for years. They may even deem anything other than heterosexuality as something abnormal and immoral. For some, it can be quite difficult to understand that sexuality is on a spectrum. Especially with identities like bisexuality and pansexuality, it can be difficult for some people to wrap their minds around that idea. In recent years, the idea of gender being more than just male and female has been getting more and more attention. It is no longer sex that defines people, but gender identity, expression, and presentation. They are not fully understood and sometimes not accepted by people; unfortunately some of that ignorance, and much to my surprise, come from people within the LGBTQ+ community. A lack of understanding about the spectrums of sexuality and gender leads to a lot of confusion, hate, and ignorance. The acronym LGBT has expanded over time to include other identities, becoming LGBTQ+. Whereas heterosexuality means that a person is attracted to the opposite sex, homosexuality mean that one is attracted to the same sex. Bisexuality means that one is attracted to both men and women; however the attraction is not always fifty–fifty; in fact, one can like one gender ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Many believe that bisexuality is an experimental phase that we go through while trying to figure out our sexual identity. Others believe that bisexuality is a ploy women use to get the attention of men. This is simply not true in both cases. Bisexuality is a true third sexual orientation. In this paper I will prove this point by looking at the works of others who have studied this question. I plan to answer the question is bisexuality a sexual orientation, something that's temporary or an outgrowth of the sexual fluidity we all exhibit? In fact one could build a case that bisexually is not just a third orientation, but is in fact the primary orientation. Man is one of the few members of the animal kingdom that uses sex for its own sake, to seek pleasure or express love, or give pleasure to a loved one and not just for procreation. For years most psychological studies have focused on two main drives shared throughout the animal kingdom. The first of these is the survival of self expressed in studies of fight or flight, hunger, water and shelter. The second is survival of the species expressed in the desire to mate and the instinct to protect the young. Mankind too follows these two paths. But unlike most others in the animal kingdom, and one can argue in the plant kingdom as well, mankind is willing to take a rest stop periodically. For example, he is willing to enjoy a good meal for its own sake, not just to satisfy his hunger. This "side street" ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 10. Living As A Lesbian, And August Jordan 's A New Politics... The articles that stood out the most to me were Cheryl Clarke's "Living As a Lesbian" and June Jordan's "A New Politics of Sexuality". These articles stood out, because while given a similar topic (lesbians) they both possessed very different, yet similar arguments. I found this interesting because it is a prime example of societies different views on controversial topics. Cheryl and June's articles contain many differences, similarities and information to be reflected on. Cheryl's main arguments are that everyone who loves women (whether its romantically, sexually, platonically, etc.) is a feminist and lesbians are all part of a rebellion. She states, "No matter how a woman lives out her lesbianism–––she has rebelled against becoming the slave master's concubine, viz., the male–dependent female, the female heterosexual." This gives evidence towards her argument that lesbians, regardless their intentions are resisting from the constructs that society wants them to adhere to. June would disagree with this statement, arguing that lesbians aren't solely out to rebel but are just pursuing their lives freely. Cheryl also points out that there is no one sort of lesbian and that whether you consider yourself a "full blown lesbian" or "bisexual" it doesn't change the fact that you are resisting against the heterosexual society. This being true, Cheryl Clarke also disagrees with the idea of bisexuality; whereas June Jordan identifies as bisexual. Following along with this Cheryl ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 11. Differences Between Bisexuality And Homosexuality, And... Cerny and Janssen (2011) aimed to determine if self–identified bisexual, heterosexual, and homosexual men show different arousal patterns to videos showing sexual interactions of different sexual orientations. Past studies had never included a sexual stimulus that was defined as bisexual (depicting a man having sex with both a women and a man.) Past studies always look at the differences of a bisexual's stimulation to heterosexual and homosexual stimuli compared to homosexual's and heterosexual's stimulations. No study had ever had a specific bisexual stimulus that they could compare bisexuals' stimulation to non–bisexuals. Lots of studies have found the bisexual orientation does to not exist. There have been many studies that have found little difference between bisexuality and homosexuality, and bisexuality and heterosexuality. These studies were based on stimulation and physical arousal. The construct of bisexuality is a foggy one. This study provides an interesting look into something no one had done before. Having a bisexual stimulus is a great new variable. However, after dissecting the Introduction and the Methods section there seems to be some conceptual and methodological weaknesses. The literature that this study is based on is peculiar for a few reasons. First, they bring up studies that back that bisexuality exists established by interview and questionnaire studies that measure fantasies, attraction, and behavior. Then right afterwards they list various ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 12. An Analysis Of Bisexuality In Orange After reviewing eighteen in–depth interviews regarding bisexuality in Orange is the New Black, it was revealed that the majority of the sample thought the show used bisexuality as a gimmick, but not the same way the research team had speculated. The respondents observed sexuality as a tool used to drive the plot forward as various romances among inmates embellished the plotline. Additionally, highly sexualized scenes in the show were used to draw in viewers. The scenes mostly featured lesbian relationships because the show is based in a women's prison. One interviewee noted that the show also portrayed heterosexual sexual encounters, proving that sex in general is used to amplify the plot. • 13. Gender Identity Is The Assumption Of There Being Binary... Binary Logic: Another issue with research pertaining to sexual identity is the assumption of there being binary categories, such as gay/straight, male/female, etc. Research in this area is generally dichotomized (e.g. male/female, gay/straight), which can foster rigid identity assumptions, foster homogeneous understanding of research particiapnts and results, foster a divide between 'normal' and 'deviant' behavior, as well as mask inherent variation in different groups and populations (Johnson & Repta, 2012). Bringing greater awareness to the complexity of sexual and gender identity could have transformative effects on how research is conducted. Some scholars in the social work field have begun to acknowledge and recognize the increasing evidence that sexual and gender identity are not binary categories, as well that categories might not even be an accurate way of understanding these phenomena (Burdge, 2007; Roche & Gringeri, 2010). While an understanding that the binary model is flawed has gained some traction in social work research, the majority of researchers continue to ignore and disregard this possibility, consequently reinforcing this erroneous dichotomous paradigm (Rassi, 2011). It has also been noted that critiques from postmodern, poststructural, and queer theory perspectives, as well as from individuals or groups (e.g. transgender, bisexual, intersex) who do not "fit neatly" into binary categories continue to remain essentially absent within social work ... • 14. The Negative Stereotypes About Bisexual Lifestyle The second contributing factor is the negative stereotypes about bisexual lifestyle. The political "treachery" of bisexual women resulted in their connection to sexual promiscuity. Lesbian women also frequently accused bisexual women of being fence–sitters who were able to "choose" between having a heterosexual and a lesbian relationship. Katie Griffin, a therapist, once summarized her bisexual experience into "On any other day, I will be straight. If it's Wednesday, I must be Gay" (1). In other words, many see bisexual individuals as being 50% gay, 50% straight, and 100% non– committal. Griffin is certainly not alone in her experiences; in her clinical practice she found that many bisexual women had to choose between lesbianism and heterosexuality (10). The fluidity of bisexuality creates discomfort with women who had to go through the tedious process of pinpointing the gender they are attracted to. Hence, lesbians see bisexuality as a transitional identity between heterosexuality and lesbianism; notably, 83% lesbians agreed that "some women claim to be bisexual when they are really lesbians who are afraid to admit it" (Rust, "Neutralizing the Political Threat" 9). Stone also notes in her memoir that lesbians are often bitter about the "straight– passing privilege" that bisexual women possess (2). They claim that bisexual women are able to enjoy the benefits of the lesbian community without receiving the discrimination that comes with it. The ability of bisexuals to ... • 15. I Am Bisexual Essay examples I am bisexual. Are you paying attention now? Bisexuality holds an interesting position when it comes to sexual minorities. On one hand, it's seen as the ultimate liberation: "They'll do it with anyone...how hot!". But when it comes to seeking mainstream social acceptance, we can be seen as the worst in sexual perversion: "They'll do it with anyone...how shameful!". There are many theories and opinions on bisexuals, some I agree with, others do not fit my definition of being bisexual. The important thing is that bisexuality is real, it's not a "transition period" to being gay, a homosexual in denial, or a person who just can't make up their mind. I think that the gay and lesbian community is among the least tolerant of bisexuality, many homosexuals have gone through a serious identity struggle and they can't accept this "halfway" homosexuality. Are we the queer of the queer? Bisexuals aren't people who can't make up their mind in the same way that people who like both blondes and brunettes aren't called indecisive. Sexual orientation used to be a black and white thing, you were either gay or you were straight. During the 40's, Kinsey came up with a sliding scale of sexuality. Suddenly, you could be somewhere in between, like a percentage. If that wasn't enough, in the 70's Klien made things even more complicated with a multi–dimensional grid. Now your sexuality ends up looking like the Nasdaq graph on a bad day! But even up until the late 70's, there wasn't a single book written on bisexuality. It's come a long way in the last 20 years. • 16. How Did Freud Support The LGBT Community From Freud's work, we can gather that he was a strong supporter of the idea that all humans are bisexual by nature. This was a forward thinking thought for Freud to posses during the era in which he worked and is possibly even radical by today's standards. While many countries have adopted the right to same–sex marriage, the fight for equality for members of the LGBT community still continues. I think Freud would be in full support of the LGBT community. While Freud would be an ally of the LGBT community, I am sure he would feign his support in a way that supported his work. I believe this could be mutually beneficial for both Freud and the LGBT community. Although Freud's work is not scientific, it still highly regarded in many circles. His ... • 17. Film And Television : Stereotypes And Implications The usage of the word "bisexual" to define an individual's attraction to both sexes has been around since 1892. Bisexuality itself has been around since the study of world sexuality and in the United States alone, bisexuals make up 55% of the LGBT community (Gates (2011) p. 4). Yet as recently as the early 21st century, psychologists have still tried to argue that "most people are one way, some the other. A very few are truly ambidextrous" (Myers (2003) p.476). Bisexual representation in film and television is largely portrayed through common stereotypes and implications – when it is portrayed at all. In television, bisexuality is dismissed as the transitory stage between heterosexuality and homosexuality. In film, it is minimized to titillation for a male audience or as a trope for sexual promiscuity. This is largely in part due to the negative stereotypes surrounding the sexuality and the dichotomous nature of media framing in terms of sexual orientation in an effort to discourage bisexual visibility. Some of the largest stereotypes surrounding bisexuality aim largely at the person's inability to "pick a side" and the erasure of their orientation when they finally do. According to Sharon Sumpter's "Myths/Realities of Bisexuality," the majority of bisexual stereotypes have to do with the idea that bisexuals are only "experimenting" and either "haven't fully accepted themselves" or are "going through a phase" (Sumpter (1989)). The latter stereotype is perhaps the most ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Tension ran high within community, as different groups experienced different amounts of discrimination for their transmission risk. In particular, scholars find that "tensions between lesbian and bisexual women was much more problematic than tensions between gay and bisexual men" (Udis–Kessler 46). These two sexual identities are extremely similar but translate to vastly different experiences. Lesbians are the more prominent group in the LGBT community; they were far more visible in the media and established their own lesbian feminist organizations before the HIV/AIDS epidemic (Rust, "Neutralizing the Political Threat" 2). On the other hand, bisexual women lacked the support communities that lesbians enjoyed during the 1980s. Many organizations and colleges did not acknowledge bisexual existence until the late 1970s, when the letter "B" was added to the LGBT+ acronym (Hutchins 244). Evidence of tension between the two groups existed in the 1970s prior to the epidemic, where lesbian groups apparently regarded bisexual women as a political threat (Tucker 43). At the start of the HIV/AIDS epidemic, lesbian and bisexual women had similar political standings. The literature published during this period was largely focused on men. The heterosexual and gay community was regarded as high risk for transmission, but sex between women was assumed by a majority of the medical community as having a low risk of HIV/AIDS transmission (Richardson 2). National censuses of HIV positive individuals gave homosexual, bisexual and heterosexual men each their own category, but all women were grouped into one large category (Richardson 9). The ... • 19. The Relationship Between Bisexuality And Its Effects On... Bisexuality is described as having romantic or sexual attraction to both males and females. This means that a bisexual woman can be attracted to either a man or a woman and have a meaningful relationship with either gender. Bisexuality can be transitional but it can also be a stable sexual orientation no different from lesbianism. With transitional bisexuality women typically experience attraction towards men and women but soon identify with either heterosexuality or lesbianism. Their bisexuality is merely a way for them to find out who they are and what they like. Stable bisexuality means that this is not a stage and it will not simply disappear with age. It is a sexuality with just as much stability as lesbianism, their attraction towards men and women will remain constant. Both types of bisexuality exist and are experienced by real women. Stable bisexuality is the more common type and most women who identify with it do not adopt a different sexuality with age. Simply because a bisexual woman may marry a man does not make her heterosexual and just because she may marry a woman does not make her a lesbian. Her sexuality remains the same because her attraction to both genders does not change. When concerning bisexuality and friendships there is a stigma that you cannot be a bisexual woman and be friends with a heterosexual woman because you will be attracted to them sexually. In the text book, Human Sexuality: from Cells to Society, Rosenthal (2013) explains sexual fluidity as "the idea that a person may change from other sex–attractions to same–sex attractions throughout his or her life" (p. 236). Rosenthal went onto explain how men who was in a heterosexual than change their sexual orientation then they finally found who they are, but for women it is different. However, when a woman switches it can be for attraction to either the opposite or same sex or it can be for a different reason. Throughout this paper, I will try to dive into the hot topic of female sexual fluidity and how women can change their sexual identities, attraction, and behaviors in their life span. When you educate yourself on a controversial subject, you often discover how uneducated and occasionally bigoted other people can be. One such subject is sexuality. As time goes on, sexuality gains more visibility as a growing number of people come out as gay, transgender, and other sexual gender orientations. The LGBT+ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans* plus) community is a supposed safe place for those who identify as queer or trans* (umbrella terms referring to those who don't identify with heterosexuality and those whose gender identity differs from the sex they were assigned at birth, respectively). However, as with any rule, people will make exceptions. Though many offenders deny, obvious discrimination is seen against minority sexualities, such as asexuality and bisexuality, in forms of jokes and mockeries, invisibility, mislabelling, prejudice, and in some cases, innocent lack of knowledge, from both inside and outside the LGBT+ community. Those who identify as bisexual are attracted to male, female, and sometimes the non–binary genders. Non–binary genders can include those who are transgender, agender, and genderfluid. Bisexuality is a separate sexuality from pansexuality. Pansexuality which is the romantic and/or sexual attraction to all genders. Like the sexuality and gender spectrums bisexuality is also a spectrum. One can be bisexual but only desire those of the male and female gender. Another could only find those who are non–binary and the female gender attractive, ect. Within the mainstream and LGBTQ+ communities the issue of bisexual erasure is quite prevalent. Bisexual erasure is the act of ignoring or removing the existence of bisexuality from primary sources. Bisexual erasure is a form of biphobia, the aversion to bisexuality and bisexual people. It can also include the denial of the existence of bisexuality. Female bisexuality has been the most ignored and unbelieved form of bisexuality. Today's denial of female bisexuality is a product of traditional disenfranchisement of female sexuality. By comparing John Wilmont, Earl of Rochester's poem "Song" to Aphra Behn's poem "To the Fair Clarinda" the existence and erasure of female bisexuality becomes clear. • 28. The Psychology Of Sexual Orientations The Psychology of Sexual Orientations Throughout the history of humans, people have been having sex. It's obviously necessary for the continuation of humans as a species. But it definitely hasn't been for just reproductive purposes. People have been engaging in same–gender sex for probably as long as humans have been around. However, the terms we think of today when we think of different sexual orientations didn't get coined until the 19th and 20th centuries. And with these terms came huge stigma that still exists today. There are many different sexual orientations that people identify as (including heterosexuality, homosexuality, bisexuality, as well as many others); the orientations that do not coincide with what people viewed as normal were originally given classification as mental disorders. The most common sexual orientation, regardless of culture, is heterosexuality. This is defined as a sexual orientation in which an individual is generally sexually attracted to members of the opposite sex. A Centers for Disease Control national survey "reported that the percentage of Americans who identify themselves as heterosexual was 90 percent for men and women" (King, 2011, p. 363). Gothic review 'To understand the chronicles they must be read as gay' , at least this is the incredibly bold statement made by George Haggerty in his chapter on Anne Rice and the Queering of Culture in his book Queer Gothic. There is no denying that Anne Rice's Vampires have a lot to do with homosexuality and Haggerty's highlighting this is in no way a new criticism, but the claim that is must be read as gay is entirely dismissive of the many other sexual paradigms that exist within The Vampire Chronicles. The Vampires in the novels explore sexual deviancy, but are always ultimately punished in doing so. The homosexual parentage of Louis and Lestat to Claudia and of Armand to Sybelle and Benji are both destroyed in their own way. Claudia and Louis' final rejection of Lestat and Armand's failure in being able to protect Sybelle and Benji from Marius, are both examples of homosexual families being explored and then finally being punished for going against the accepted social norm of 20th century culture. This supports Haggerty's claim that readers want to 'explore unauthorized desires and at the same time see them bleed', by exploring and then destroying homosexual relationships repeatedly throughout the collection. • 31. Dismantling Binaries: Bisexuality Dismantling binaries Introduction The process of social differentiation is the key to the survival and perseverance of social inequality. Once constructed, these boxes automatically build a vested interest in keeping them. Without a procedure of making difference among people or by developing a way to tell dissimilar types of people, there would be no source for treating people differently. This disparity treatment is not essentially unequal, social disparity but it boils down to treating people differently. Lucal, in his article focuses on the building and preservation of boxes and limits with respect to sex, gender and sexuality. In the society, these boxes and their limits rest on a multiplicity of assumptions. The first supposition is that there are two sex's genders, and sexualities. Everyone is male or a female, feminine or masculine, heterosexual or homosexual but no one can be both. This supposition of sex believes the truth of substantial difference in how persons actually do gender but yet people carry on to believe that there are just two equally elite gender groups into which every person can easily be positioned. (Lucal, B.2008) The second postulation is that sex and gender are congruent in that, human beings who belong to a sex category are unspecified to belong to a gender class that relate to that sex. Nonetheless, over the past few decades, the status quo with regard to same– sex sexual activity has changed drastically. The repeal of anti–gay laws and the 2003 supreme court decision Lawrence v. Texas which eliminated all remaining sodomy laws in the United States, the removal of homosexuality from its designation as a sexual disorder in the DSM, the existence of high–profile LGBTQ figures, and the push for, and legalization of gay marriage in the United States and other western countries have all been significant contributing factors toward the normalization of same–sex sexual activity. The general public has experienced increased exposure to the LGBTQ community, and as a result, acceptance of sexual minorities, including bisexual individuals, has grown. In spite of the progress toward acceptance of bisexual individuals, many people still view sexual orientation as dichotomous, which contributes to the erasure and/or invisibility of the bisexual community (Alarie & Gaudet 2013). Some also perceive bisexuality as a "transitional identity" between heterosexuality and homosexuality, or believe that people who identify as bisexual are just too afraid to come out as homosexual (Israel and Mohr 2003; Alarie & Gaudet 2013). • 35. Sociological Attitudes Toward Gender And Sexuality When analysing the current state of sociological attitudes toward gender and sexuality, the overwhelming conclusion is that the hegemonic view in society assumes an inherent binary (Lorber via Steele, 2005, p.75). We categorize people into two groups: male or female; man or woman; masculine or feminine; gay or straight. However, throughout humanity's development, variances to that model have emerged, either choosing to sit somewhere between the binary, or reject the model altogether. These variations challenge the binary assumptions entrenched within society, and as a result, are often denied, misunderstood or ignored entirely. Enter bisexuality. Put simply, the concept of bisexuality is a sexual orientation that lies in the space between heterosexuality and homosexuality. However, society's assumption of sexual essentialism, the idea that sexual orientation is fixed and absolute, has led to a culture that is "uncomfortable with people who are sexually ambiguous (Valverde via Naugler, 2012, p. 87). This urges society to assume that, despite the existence of bisexuality, people are really either gay or straight (Valverde via Naugler, 2012, p. 83). This is the phenomenon of bisexual erasure (Eisner, 2013, p. 89). Bisexual erasure affects both bisexual men and women in various ways; however, this essay will focus on the erasure of bisexuality in men in particular. There is a distinctive public perception when it comes to bisexuality in men: that they don't exist at all. Denial ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 36. Sexuality As A Social Construct Hannah St. Lifer Sexuality as a Social Construct Heternormativity is the idea that there exist two distinctive classifications of the genders, males and females, with customary roles in society. The idea asserts that heterosexuality is the only normal sexual orientation of people and that all sexual and marital relations must abide by this norm. Society has adopted this belief and constructed it into a standard of life. It is normal for people to automatically presume that most other people are heterosexual and that heterosexuality is the default sexual preference. Thus, all other sexualities that are nonheterosexual are a deviation of the default. Heterosexuality is the most appreciative and is the most acceptable sexuality for a man and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Monogamous, reproductive heterosexuality is also valued socially above all other forms of sexuality. Society has constructed the belief that heterosexuality is the ideal sexual identity, and society subsequently critiques non–heterosexual identities, such as gays, bisexuals, and trans, which all fall outside this custom. As a consequence of society deeming heterosexuality as the ideal sexuality, sexualities that are biologically infertile are less socially acceptable in society. Nonheterosexuals are seen as deviants and consequently mocked and ridiculed by society. Gayle proposes that same sex relationships are inferiors, but, "stable, long–term lesbian and gay couples are verging on respectability, but bar dykes and promiscuous gay men are hovering just above the groups at the very bottom of the pyramid." For instance, society already considers gay males to be lower on the hierarchy, but those males, which are less masculine, are even lower on the pyramid. Society has constructed these "less masculine" gays to be "more gay". However, homosexual males that still obtain monogamous relationships are more appreciated in respect to gays who are not in relationships. For example, famous gay couples such as Ellen DeGeneres's relationship, and the gay marriage portrayed on Modern Family, are valued in society. These are higher up on the pyramid because both gay couples are in stable relationships that ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 37. No Right Or Wrong? The LGBTQIA+ acronym is always growing and changing, which sometimes makes it hard for those outside the community, and even those inside, to understand what each of the letters stand for. Because of these changes and complexities, many identities are often left out, misrepresented, or misunderstood. One of these identities is bisexuality. Bisexuality has many definitions and has many sexual orientation identifications that branch off of it, many of which have popped up in recent years. Yet, what people do not realize is that bisexuality, like many other sexual orientations, can be fluid and different for each person choosing to identify with it. There is no right or wrong definition; yet we normally only see one definition when bisexuality is talked about. And that is if it is talked about at all. Bisexuality is often left out of LGBTQIA+ representation, or is portrayed in a stereotypical way that makes it hard for those struggling with identifying their sexual orientation to find a label that fits for them. The most common definition of bisexuality is found when you do a simple Google search of "bisexual": "sexually attracted to both men and women." Yet, looking up "bisexuality" gives you something different: "bisexuality is romantic attraction, sexual attraction, or sexual behavior toward both males and females, or romantic or sexual attraction to people of any sex or gender identity; this latter aspect is sometimes termed pansexuality" (Google). • 38. Nothing To Be Mere About Being Bisexuality? Nothing to be ashamed about being bisexual. You may fear for the criticism you may get levelled against you for being bisexual, but understand that it's your freedom to live the life you want and none other than you have any say in it. Only thing is that, often people get confused when they hear the word bisexual and tend to pass on their judgement through their coloured glasses. For a person who is not heterosexual, it is difficult to deal with the issue of bisexuality as it would be heartbreaking and difficult to deal emotionally. One must understand that a woman being bisexual doesn't mean that she is prepared to have sex freely with men and women. Bisexual women are not for your sexual entertainment and if you have any such ideas in your mind to spend some time , refrain approaching women with that kind of a wrong notion. Relationship never develops that way. If your girl friend is prepared lift her veil and tell you about her relationship with another woman, treat her kindly and with care. If she is prepared to have relationship with you and you are prepared to take the things revealed by her in stride, it would be good for you and her. In case you are not capable of digesting what she has revealed then do not experiment with her. It would be a beautiful journey if you are capable of winning a lady friend who is bisexual provided you are willing to carry on with her. Some women may become curious and ... • 39. Homosexuality: Categories Of Discrimination Or Homophobia Frann Michel describes bisexuality as "the category that disrupts categories" in her literature review from 1998 on three books discussing bisexuality. Research indicates that bisexual people experience discrimination or "homophobia" generally associated with queer (meaning non–heterosexual, for the purposes of this review) sexual orientation and also discrimination specifically targeting bisexual identity. Furthermore, they experience this intolerance from gay/lesbian individuals as well as straight people. Historically, bisexual people have had the worst mental health amongst all sexualities and experts have proposed these extra stressors are a reason why. Since 2008 homosexuals have been increasingly accepted into mainstream society, as ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Frann Michel adds to this definition that the attraction can be to more than one gender, not necessarily male or female. Freud used bisexuality in his oedipal theory to describe the state a baby is born in before they decide to be heterosexual or homoesexual. This origin is where much of the stigma around bisexuality began. Stigma and stereotyping are mechanisms even used by other members of the queer community that marginalize bisexuals. While this impact is mirrored in homophobia and racism, bisexuals specifically are often excluded from other minority groups. The majority, and nearly entirety, of research on bisexual people was published after 1990 and initial authors like Loraine Hutchins, Lani Ka'ahumanu and Sue George collected anecdotal evidence and conducted surveys to analyze and bring awareness to bisexual issues. These early authors considered the unique challenges and stigmas bisexuals faced which later led later authors to look at the impacts of these social ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
