The Long Walk Home And Sociological Perspective
Humans often take pride in their ability to think freely and act independently. However, many actions that we perform and certain ways we behave
in society are often quickly overlooked and not questioned. We often do not understand why we perform certain tasks or adhere to certain rules.
However, we still paradoxically pride ourselves in our freedom. By analyzing the sociological perspective, we can understand how much of a role
society often plays in our actions and behavior as individuals in society. Certainly, the sociological perspective can allow us to analyze events in the
movie The Long Walk Home more closely. The sociological perspective can allow us to understand how the actions of the characters are often chained
and their behaviors controlled by society, through using the theories of social location, social control, and social stratification. The sociological
perspective can also allow us to understand why these characters strangely adhered to these forms of oppressive control and often resisted change,
through using role theory and the sociology of knowledge. Lastly, the sociological perspective will allow us to understand how actors can break free of
these bindings, through using an interpretive analysis and applying concepts such as freedom, ecstasy, and bad faith. Overall, the sociological
perspective allows us to understand the personalities, actions, and story of The Long Walk Home through revealing to us how these features were
guided through control,

Comparing Huckleberry Finn And Long Walk To Freedom
Beyond a shadow of doubt, there are many lessons that I accomplished in both these books. Their story lines are amazing and they left me with
powerful messages that are can be useful in my everyday life. Which is that freedom is for all because we are all humans, created equally, thus
deserves to be treated as such. Moreover, though these books were written in different settings, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn which was
written when slavery was still legal and Long Walk to Freedom, which was written secretly in prison, they remind us of identical memos about
challenges and how wrong it can be. Also, that it can lead to fatalities and terrible endings. As well as, nobody was born racism, kids are taught it,
therefore, racism is cruel. Lastly, listening to our hearts can sometimes be important because it is the only way for us to live according to the natural

The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, gathered us civilization and human nature, in which Huck shows human nature through his freedom of
spirit, civilized ways and his way to escape. Hypocrisy, society, racism and slavery were involved in a society in which Huck lived in along with
people who are hypocrites, racist and they tried to change who he is. Also, it was a society placed on regulations and beliefs and other which
ridiculous and inhuman things. In the book Long Walk to Freedom, delivered us social equality, how everyone is equal and that there is nobody
above the other; Human rights and that everybody should have the right to be, to live and work where and who they please. Lastly, freedom and
human sacrifice, can be hard sometimes to do or want something because you will always have to choose between two things in order to accomplish

Mandala And Wallenberg: What Make Heroes True Heroes

Mandala and Wallenberg: What Make Heroes True Heroes
Heroes can be found in various circumstances, and they can be anyone who saves the day. However, not all the heroes are Nelson Mandala or Raoul
Wallenberg. Through comparing and contrasting the heroism of Mandala and Wallenberg as the article What I Learned From Raoul Wallenberg and
the poem My Hero Mandala depicted, it can be presumed that there are mainly four distinctions between the remarkable heroic deeds of Nelson
Mandala and Raoul Wallenberg which are the people whom they saved, their main enemies, their means of rescuing lives, and the status they had
before they were granted heroes.
The most conspicuous aspect of the differences between the heroism of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The strategies they used were quite different. Nelson Mandala first used bombs and weapons to fight against the government. Soon he failed and was
kept in prison by the authority. Later he changed his mind, he decided to use the method called non–violent resistance to motivate his people just like
Gandhi. He began to become a leader. Because of his antigovernment actions, his was kept in prison for 27 years. After his dark days in a prison
which was built on a isolated island, he finally, as the poem My Hero Mandala said, ... no sad... but smiling, laughing... who was imprisoned but
smiling and forgiving, found the only path to freedom, that was love. It was, like Mandala said himself, A long walk to freedom. After his brutal life
in prison there was no violence in his heart anymore. He sacrificed his freedom to motivate the people in South Africa, eventually the government lost
its control. The people voted Mandala to be the president of South Africa, thus they regained their human rights. In the poem My Hero Mandala the
writer used a literature speech of repetition which repeated the words my hero Mandala for several time to show respect to Mandala, it strengthened
the theme of the poem, and more importantly, it showed the supportive, respective and beloved attitude of every people in South Africa towards the
national hero Mandala. This was the victory of Mandala, the victory of South Africa, as well as the victory of freedom and human rights. 50 years ago,

Of Nelson Mandela's Long Walk To Freedom, By...
Throughout history, there has been those who fight for what they believe in and those who counterstrike these efforts. While the opposers may seem
like the villains in the story, it is always possible to liberate them. These sentiments are mirrored in the ideas of both Nelson Mandela's "Long Walk to
Freedom" and Sophocles' "Antigone." Mandela's commitment to the liberation of not only those who are oppressed, but those who have acted as their
oppressors is one that can be found in a number of different narratives. Antigone proves Mandela's ideas regarding oppression through her determination
and refusal to submit to Creon's tyrannical rulings, which lead to his personal liberation and self–reflection by the close of the piece.
Creon, who becomes the new leader of Thebes at the start of "Antigone," rules with extreme professionalism and control. While these seem like
positive traits, they become unreasonable when he decides to put his leadership over his familial bonds. Antigone, much like Mandela, refuses to let
consequence come in between her and what she believes to be right. Antigone attempts to liberate Creon during their discussions regarding his plans
for their brother, but it is not until she acts on her beliefs that he truly begins to see the wrongfulness of his actions. Antigone tells Creon "I was born
to join in love, not hate" (Sophocles 85). In saying this, Antigone foreshadows and provides hope that Creon will be liberated from his original
mindset. This idea is

How Did Mahatma Gandhi, Daisy Bates Have A Fight In The...
"In a gentle way, you can shake the world" stated Mahatma Gandhi–– a fierce activist who fought for basic human rights of the people of India. Gandhi,
Daisy Bates, and Nelson Mandela were all leaders in the fight for equality. Mandela fought for rights of the African people while Bates fought in the
Civil Rights movement in America. These three individuals used persistence, courage, and peace to defend the basichuman rights of all people.
Daisy Bates was a civil rights activist who use her bravery and persistence to fight for basic human rights. For example, Bates and her husband
received many threats "She received numerous death threats and she and her husband were forced to close The Arkansas Press" (Biography.com).
Bates never let the threats get to her and she continued to fight for what she believed in. Because she never gave up, Bates received many awards "
She was named Woman of the Year by the National Council of Negro Women in 1957." (Biography.com). Bates was proudly awarded the Women of
the year. One of Bates' greatest accomplishments was the integration of Little Rock's Central High "Daisy proudly led these students to do this, which
is a great accomplishment in provoking change in America" (Biography.com). Bates helped the nine integrating students without fear even when it got
hard for her. Daisy Bates was a courageous fighter who persevered and fought for basic human rights.
Mahatma Gandhi was an inspirational and peaceful activist for Indian rights. Gandhi developed a peaceful and harmful way to fight for basic human
rights "Gandhi developed his philosophy of "Satyagraha," or resistance through non–violent civil disobedience to defend his rights and the rights of all
Indians and non–whites." (Gandhi's Legacy). Gandhi encouraged many people to use more peaceful manners such as riots and fasting. Gandhi used his
motivational skills to inspire people to stand up for their rights "He encouraged others to defend their rights in this manner, and to work together to end
racial injustice in South Africa." (Gandhi's Legacy). Gandhi's motivational skills and political skills were most important when it came to encouraging
others to help fight back. These skills paid off and he was able to gather

The Power of Freedom
An Indispensable Right There are a variety of birds that make wonderful house pets, and most of these birds don't mind living in a cage. However,
this is not the case for the cockatiel. When the cockatiel is not able to fly freely and have social interaction with other birds of its type, it becomes
depressed and plucks out all of its feathers, one by one. It longs for freedom. The kind of freedom it would get out in the wild. According to
Longman's Advanced American Dictionary, the word "freedom" is defined as "the right to do what you want without being controlled or restricted by
anyone "(643). There are two authors that were discussed in EFL 095 that use the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In 1894, Kate Chopin wrote "The Story of an Hour," to describe the constraints placed on women during the 19th century. During the 19th century
women didn't have rights, their only roles were to be wives and mothers. Women didn't have any rights to make decisions, have freedom of speech
or work outside the home. It is an obstacle in the face of liberty that everyone should have, but only men reaped the benefits during this time.
However, in the story, the main character, Mrs. Mallard experiences freedom for a short period of time. Mrs. Mallard receives news that her husband
Bently was killed in a train accident and her sister Josephine and friend take precautions to share the news because they know it will bring on deep
sorrow. In contrast, the death of her husband brings on a new feeling that others might consider inappropriate after the death of a spouse. Kate Chopin
shows this in the short story:
She abandoned herself a little whispered word escaped her slightly parted lips. She said it over and over under her breath: "free, free, free!" (Chopin
327).
Death of a love one is expected to cause sadness, but in this case, it was for a short period of time. The premature death of Mr. Mallard causes Mrs.
Mallard to start to notice the beauty of her environment, which possibly had gone unnoticed for a long time.
She could see in the open square before her house the tops of trees that were all quiver with the new spring life. The delicious breath of

Louise Symbolism In The Story Of An Hour
Within the tear jerking short story, The Story of an Hour by Kate Chopin, Kate Chopin offers insight on the ongoing battle of the main character and
her loss of her husband. In the beginning of the story, Louise Mallard has to be informed about her husband's death. Since Louise suffers from heart
trouble, her sister, Josephine, must inform her in a cautious manner. Brently, was announced dead by a local newspaper in which Brently has died due
to a railroad disaster. Louise is perched against an open window in which she studies the outside environment closely. She begins to cry simultaneously
trying to keep her emotions within. She soon repeats "free!" numerous amounts of times. Louise imagines seeing her husband's corpse and began to

Louise then exclaims, "free, free, free!" when she was told about the news of her husband's death (Chopin 13). Louise exclaims "free" multiple times
because this is essentially her hidden feeling towards her husband's death, free. In direct correlation to Louise repetition of free, she sits near a window
in which symbolizes her underlying feelings towards the oppressiveness of marriage. After all the time she stared out the window, "now there was a
dull stare in her eyes, whose gaze was fixed away off yonder on one of those patches of blue sky. It was not a glance of reflection, but rather indicated
a suspension of intelligent thought" (Chopin 13). Louise undergoes a change in mindset in which she suddenly realizes the freedom she received over
Brently's death. The window is a symbol to her freedom, in which she enlightens herself after a few moments of thought.
Lastly, irony plays a role in Louise's sudden death. The irony begins when Louise "breathed a quick prayer that life might be long. It was only
yesterday she had thought with a shudder that life might be long" (Chopin 14). The death of Brently poured the negative influences in Louise's mind.
She believed that her life was going to be long and dull when she was informed. Eventually, "the doctors came they said she had died of heart
disease–of joy that kills" (Chopin 14). Shortly after she thought

Henry David Thoreau's Argument Analysis
I think that Henry David Thoreau's argument is how human society isn't close enough to nature, and that we use the environment mostly for our
interests. He wants people to be more attuned to the environment, and we should carefully observe the environment. Henry David Thoreau believes that
we know ourselves only by knowing nature. We are apart of nature, knowing that is the only way to truly live.
1. According to Henry David Thoreau our relationship to nature is how we treat nature and the environment. We see ourselves as if we are in total
control over nature and use it for our personal interests. When we believe that we have control over nature we think that we can do whatever we want
with the environment, but Henry David Thoreau thinks

Huck Finn Obstacles
The ambitions In life we all have different goals, so, do the characters in both these books. They each granted different goals in different ways of their
own. The first goal was peace and without peace no one can co–operate with the other or with the enemy. Example, In Huck Finn, when Huck met Jim
at the Jackson Island and once he knew more about him, like having a family, feelings etc. He began protecting him by hiding him. Jim also does the
same thing and he began to treat Huck as his own son, though, he knew that Huck pops was racist. He also began being a father figure to him and it
shows that without the other, they would not have been free at the end because they needed each other. Another example, in Long Walk, when Mandela
came back from Ethiopia, he continued working with the ANC as always and this time he included a white person in it though it was not permitted. He
knew that that person will be able to help him and give him all the information he needed. Therefore, these examples show that in order to achieve the...

In human nature it's sometimes hard for two races or cultures to be in one unite because one can not understand the other. Without people being
united nothing can be accomplished, there will always be conflicts and nothing would go on and on. Example, If we go back in Huck Finn we
realize that though Huck and Jim were strangers to each other, they had to find a way to be united, to work things together. Also another, example
from Long Walk to Freedom, before Mandela went to prison the third time, he and his comrades from the ANC campaign, they figured that if they
don't come up with a plan, the whites will take everything from them. So they decided to divide into groups and each group had a certain area in
which they will send a message of what they plan was and their roles. However, it was only to the people of the village, their family members and the

Internal Conflict In Anthem By Ayn Rand
There has always been a slight apprehension towards being alone or standing alone. Students rarely want to admit to having an answer different from
the rest of their classmates; some people do not want to go somewhere and do something by themselves. Notably, with more shy or anxious people, they
will often stick around someone they know, so they will not be alone in the crowd. Although that company might help them make it through those
nerve–wracking moments, when is the right time for them to walk alone? Should a person ever walk alone? In Ayn Rand's Anthem, Equality's internal
conflict of conformity versus individuality plays a role that Equality needs to overcome in order to complete their quest for freedom which helps create
their outcast archetype and gives significance to the final word of the novel.
The internal conflict in Anthem plays a role within the novel by providing the complication that the protagonist, Equality, has to overcome in order to
complete their quest. Equality is on a quest for freedom and for knowledge, even though it will separate them from their brothers. From the beginning
of the novel until the third chapter, Equality notes how they commit transgressions against their society, such as preference, and how they are different
from their brothers, an example being Equality's height of 6 feet tall. In the third chapter, Equality more or less accepts their fate of being alone, even
though the internal conflict still silently lurks in the

Long Walk And Freedom By Robert Nelson Mandela
"Long Walk to Freedom", released in 1995, is a biographical story about the revolutionary and former South African President Nelson Mandela.
The book narrates how Mandela becomes a remarkable leader in the construction of a democratic South Africa. It chronicles his early life, growing
up, education and his 27 years in prison before becoming President and working to rebuild the country 's segregated society. Mandela begins his
book with a description of his ancestry and later goes on to talk about his early childhood, which mainly consisted on herding cattle and practicing a
traditional southern South African type of martial art. When Mandela became of age, his father sent him to school, which was a rare privilege for a
child in his village. Mandela transcended at school and his uncle decided to invest on Nelson's school success by sending him to a series of exclusive
boarding schools.
In the following sections of his biography, Mandela describes his young adulthood and his gradual metamorphosis into a leader of South Africa's
freedom and equality movement. As a young adult, Nelson moved to Johannesburg and became an active member in the African National Congress
(ANC), an organization dedicated to fight for the rights of black South Africans. Mandela joins the ANC's Youth League; a subgroup that advocated
similar, but more radical ideals than the main organization, in which he adopted a leadership role.
Unfair racial laws had ruled South Africa for a long time, but the

Story Of An Hour Literary Analysis
Freedom and control are concepts everyone wishes to possess, but some struggle to obtain them. For example in "The Story of an Hour" by Kate
Chopin the main character is told that her controlling and repressive husband has died in a train accident. At first she sobs like a small child and
hides in her room, but she soon realizes she is free to live a life for herself. With her newfound happiness, she returns downstairs right as her
husband, alive and well, is walking through the front door. Mrs. Mallard is said to have died "of a joy that kills" (qtd. in Meyer 16). Another example
of a struggle to obtain freedom is in "A Rose for Emily" by William Faulkner. The main character, Emily, is controlled by her father. After her father
passes away she is desperate for a loving relationship. Her last... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
She poisons Homer and keeps his body in her bedroom, giving her the closest thing to a healthy relationship as she can get. Although both stories
possess the theme of freedom, as well as sympathetic characters, the attempt to gain freedom is vastly different. Freedom is a common theme in
both Chopin's and Faulkner's story, but the processes taken by the main characters to obtain, or try to obtain, that freedom is dissimilar. In
Chopin's story freedom is obtained, but not how the main character predicted. Chopin writes, "As powerless as her two white slender hands would
have been," and later states, "There would be no powerful will bending hers" (qtd. in Meyer 15). These two quotes are great examples of how Mrs.
Mallard has felt helpless for years because her husband has been bending her will and taking her power away. When her husband is said to be dead, she
believes she is finally free and even repeats the word a few times, "free, free, free" (qtd. in Meyers 15) But as Louise returns downstairs to her sister, the
door opens and in walks Brently

Harriet Tubman Conductor On The Underground Road Analysis
Harriet Tubman and Nelson Mandela both had big impacts but I believe Nelson Mandela had a more important impact..The informational text,
"Harriet Tubman: Conductor on the Underground railroad" by Ann Petry is about Harriet's life being a slave and her understanding the bitter truths
about slavery. The autobiography, "Long Walk to Freedom" by Nelson Mandela is about Mandela writing about how his life was, him being born
free, but even before he was born, white people had made a racial domination against his own people. Both of these people both stood up for what they
thought was wrong and didn't give up. However, Nelson Mandela had a more important impact. In, "Harriet Tubman: Conductor on the Underground

The policy of apartheid created a deep and lasting wound in my country and my people.... My country is rich in the minerals and gems that lie

paragraph 9 through 12, it states, "I was not born with a hunger to be free. I was born free – free in every way that I can know..... Later, as a young

but as he got older, ended up hungering for his own and and others, not just black, white too. He believes in his people, he knows that the greatest

Nelson Mandel The Icon Of Power And Tolerance
Mandela.. The Icon of Power and Tolerance Nelson Mandela is one of the most prominent and the most inspiring character of our time. This character
became the inspiration for a complete school that teaches the meanings of the wonderful humanitarian implications and instills the supreme values

tunneling, unwavering commitment, meaning making, and the importance of satellite figure. When we read the books that documented Mandela 's
life, and specially his book "A Long Walk to Freedom", we can simply find him as "tunneler", a figure of unwavering commitment, who made
meaning and understood the importance of satellite figure. Mandela's life was not simple and easy; he was surrounded by adversities and hardship all
his life. Brafman says, "The tunnelers ....... routinely approach their lives from a slightly different perspective or angle. And that approach makes all

the police became more aware of him. Nelson received ban after ban, which ranged from months to years. He also experienced jail time constantly.
Eventually, the police’s pursuit of him forced him to go underground. Nelson was also becoming more open–minded. He now believed that the
fight should involve the Indians and the Coloureds. He also believed that Communism did have some good points, but he would never accept the whole
communism aspect. There were many freedom fighters in South Africa. One that stood out was Dr. Xuma. Dr. Xuma was friend of Nelson and the
president of the ANC, but the struggle forces many hardships on one’s life. Nelson gave everything up to pursue his fight for freedom. He

Nelson Mandela Courage Analysis
Leaders: Creating A Better Tomorrow Important leaders/activists have left an impactful effect on not just our lives, but the worlds. But certain
leaders, out of millions, have touched us effectively. Leaving us with a strive and determination to change the world we live in today. For Instance,
Nelson Mandela a man full of courage, fought endlessly until he saw freedom rights for all. Additionally, Gandhi was disgusted by the unequal
treatment to certain races, so he decided to stand up for an equal life, for all. Last but certainly not least, Morgan Brian who was shocked and
impacted by the unequal pay between women and men soccer players, and decided to fight it. Although these individuals used different methods,
they all had courage, passion, and devoted followers, who helped them stand up for their cause. To start, Nelson Mandela had courage, a large group
that shared the same ideas that he did, and the dedication to his fight that made him sacrifice so much. For instance, "I learned the meaning of
courage...showing a strength and resiliency that defies the imagination" (Mandela). This shows how Mandela had courage, which ultimately was his
inspiration for freedom to be widespread, for both the oppressed and the oppressors. Additionally, "I saw that it was not just my freedom that was

Short Summary Of Nelson Mandela 's ' Long Walk On Freedom '
Elon Fiol
May 13, 2015 "Long Walk to Freedom"
"I hate race discrimination most intensely and in all its manifestations. I have fought it all during my life; I fight it now, and will do so until the end
of my days." Nelson Mandela. He was birthed into greatness and it is safe to say that he was a publicly acclaimed leader for his great efforts during
the Apartheid in South Africa. Many would identify a leader in many ways but, the most important aspect of leadership is to go against the
circumstances and make a difference. Mandela's childhood experiences and life after helped shaped his beliefs and values that would label him
the man he became to be. In terms of culture and other aspects that would influence a child's life, there is a correlation between childhood
experiences and the kind of person we grow up to be. In order to understand Mandela's life, we have to examine the content of his childhood
surroundings and his personal way of being. His life through trial and error would create a legacy to learn from for many generations to come. He
had passion for the fight against racial oppression and rights of the people in South Africa but, his views and morals resonate with people all over
the world. Racial oppression exist in the most richest and poorest parts of the world and is an ideology that has been deeply rooted since the
beginning of time. It is people like Nelson Mandela that put aside their own differences to represent the people of

Anne Frank, Nelson Mandela And Louis Zamperini
After reading many stories about people being incarcerated by their environments, you would think they would just accept it or give up. Shockingly in
many of the stories I've read the exact opposite happens and they fight through these tough situations and always manage to stay positive no matter
what is thrown at them. Anne Frank, Nelson Mandela and Louis Zamperini are perfect examples of people who were physically and emotionally
incarcerated and they never let it bring them down. Instead, they used their incarceration as motivation to better the situation they were in.
Reading many of the poems in class really gives you a sense of how a person is feeling in such little words. It describes the environment around
them, how they are dealing with is and what their thoughts are on it. A poem I feel does incredibly well with this this "Some Advice to Those Who
Will Serve Time inPrison". This poem describes a man in prison with a lot of time to serve and how he feels about it. He describes prison as making
him start to lose himself and how much it really affects his outlook on life. Prison makes him feel powerless and like he has no control of his life
because he can't make decisions for himself anymore. He can't control when he eats, showers or even when he wakes up in the morning, basically
the only thing he can control is how he deals with this new way of life. He says "[p]art of you may live alone inside, / like a stone at the bottom of a
well" (Judith Tannenbaum, 19). This

Fear Of Change In Chinua Achebe's Things Fall Apart
"Progress is impossible without change, and those who cannot change their minds cannot change anything."George Bernard Shaw. Okonkwo and
Nelson Mandela took on change in very different ways. In Things Fall Apart by Chinua Achebe, Okonkwo can not handle the change that has been
happening while he was away. In Long Walk To Freedom by Nelson Mandela, Mandela fights for freedom and change, He wanted equal right between
both blacks and whites. In Things Fall Apart, Okonkwo is driven by the fear of change. Umuofia is like a child to Okonkwo. When Okonkwo was
banished from Umuofia, he was determined that when he returned to his homeland he would restart and build up new, he was determined to be very

While he was serving his sentence the ANC was raided. Seventeen in high command and Mandela were charged with treason and conspiracy to

convicted he told the others they wouldn't appeal the ruling. Mandela made no defense for what he did, only gave a four hour speech. The Supreme
Court of South Africa convicted Mandela and seven others to life in prison on Robinson Island. Mandela was 45 years old. Robinson Island is like

Analysis of South Africa Through Two Films: Mandela: Long...
Analysis & Synthesis of South Africa Based on the 1995 written autobiographical account of Mandela's own life, Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom
serves as an inspirational biopic. Filmed on location in South Africa, the film focuses most of its time on Mandela's early life and transition into
adulthood, while dedicating only a small portion to Mandela's life and political achievements after imprisonment. Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom can
be divided into three parts: Mandela's early life and coming of age, his unfortunate imprisonment, and lastly the effects of his unexpected freedom.
The opening scene of the Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom sets the stage for the first part of not only the film, but also of Mandela's early life and

Mandela was a natural people person.
Along with his interpersonal skills, another contributing factor to this relationship was the sheer fact that Mandela and the guards spent a substantial
amount of time together –– 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, for nearly 30 years. It is hard to not develop some–sort of mutually beneficial relationship
spending this much time together. As Dr. Anthony Cheeseboro, Associate Professor of History at Southern Illinois University stated, "It's hard to be
an ass when you are together all the time." This part of Mandela's life would also serve as a building block to his later years as a political figure in
South Africa.
It not only shocked Mandela, but also the world. After serving 27 years of a life sentence, Mandela was freed in 1990. Upon his newfound
freedom, he stated, "We [South Africans] have waited too long for our freedom." Mandela was free from life in prison, but he, and the rest of black
South Africa, was still not free in the sense of racial equality. This last stage of Mandela's life is where the film ends. In the nation's first democratic
election, Nelson Mandela was elected president. Four years after his release from prison, Mandela had become a champion for his people and was
extraordinarily powerful. Just has he had formed a relationship with the enemy in prison, he did the same upon his election as President. The former
enemy, the Afrikaner government, was included in Nelson's

Story Of An Hour Short Story Essay
Short Fiction Analysis Essay: "The Story of an Hour"
Death awakens many emotions. In the short story "The Story of an Hour" written by Kate Chopin symbolism and Irony are used to show the
freedom the character (Mrs. Mallard) wants from her husband. Mrs. Mallard is forced into an emotional roller coaster that eventually brings out her
true feelings of freedom. The story has different symbols in the meaning of freedom to and how ironic these symbols become to Mrs. Mallard at the
end of the story. For many married women marriages can be a symbol of love, unity, and fidelity until death do us part. This story gives the perspective
that love was not there from Mrs. Mallard towards Mr. Mallard. Chopin description of how some women think of marriage as the fulfillment in their
life, while others see it as a cage is a good example of marriage in that era. Women in that time only live confined to the home and see little to nothing
of their husbands. They spend their day taking care of the house, children, and have a small social life. "Middle–class women 1890s America, women
who were subjected to a strict set of social codes that governed female...identity" (Emmert 56). Mrs. Mallard mentions she will cry again when she
sees her husband's dead body. The way she describes her husband's kindness and love towards her makes the reader believe there is some love in that
marriage. However, feels trapped by her marriage and her sickness. Her husband expresses his love for her by being

Nelson Mandela's Quest For Freedom
Nelson Mandela was a South African anti–apartheid revolutionary, who fought long and hard for the freedom of his people. Freedom is seen as a holy
grail, a way out of troubles for many people. Mandela made sure he and his people were able to get away from the discrimination and violence they
experienced. The movie Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom shows exactly what he had to go through to reach freedom. Mandela's quest for freedom
can be seen as similar to that of Jimmy Baca's. Both these men were convicted and put in jail for ridiculous accusations. Also both Baca and Mandela
used their knowledge to find ways to better themselves and ultimately helped them survive and get out of jail. Baca steers away from the darkness that

During Mandela's time the Black people in South Africa were being treated in much the same way as they are today. In the essay My Views in the
Eyes of the Stranger the author quotes that "My life means nothing to the white people" she continues to say, "they call it punishment, I call it
torment" (My Views in the Eyes of a Stranger). With these quotes she perfectly sums up the discrimination they go through. Mandela was perfectly
aware of this. In the movie it is shown that Mandela conducts rallies and protests, involving the public into his fight for freedom. The movie shows
him getting angry, and getting the public angry; educating them on what was really happening to them. Just like Mandela the author of the essay
dreams "that we live in a society that did not have racism and every person was given the same respect and chance to be successful" (My Views in
the Eyes of a Stranger). Even fifty years before today Mandela was wishing for the same thing, which empowered him to fight for change, for
freedom. In the movie the black community of South Africa is shown being beat and murdered for even the simplest of things, such as assembling
together. They were not given equal opportunities as the white people, they were forced into poverty, and they were wrongly accused and jailed. This
was a driving force to Mandela that fueled his quest for

Mother Jones's Impact On Child Labor Laws
Have you ever wondered how some people enact change? Mother Jones protested for child labor laws. Melba integrated a white high school in
order to get rid of racism. Nelson Mandela joined South Africa's congress to help racism. They all persevered to enact change, but they took different
approaches for their problems. Mother Jones made an impact on child labor because she persevered to protect children. They way down to the White
House just to protect kids. According to Josephson in Mother Jones: Fierce Fighter for Workers' Rights, "She and the textile union leaders would stage
their own tour. They would march the mill children all the way to the president of the United States–Theodore Roosevelt." This shows how she got her
idea to try to persuade not only the President but make this issue publicly known. Josephson states, "Mother Jones had seen how dangerous their jobs
were. Barefooted little girls and boys reached their tiny hands into the treacherous machinery to repair snapped threads or crawled underneath the
machinery to oil it." Josephson has a heart for kids, and she just can't stand to see them being tortured like this. Josephson says, "The next night, the
marchers slept on the banks of the Delaware River. In every town, Mother Jones drew on what she did best–speaking–to gather support for her cause."
Mother Jones had to be strong to carry out her task, and to get her point across to the people. Mother Jones had to be strong in order to carry out her

A Comparison Of Eulogy For Mahatma Gandhi
Extended Writing Project
Leaders.Every country has and needs them for important decisions and to help stop problems and maintain order. Without leaders we would have
nothing in society but chaos and destruction. Leadership to people can mean many different things but to almost all people Nelson Mandela and
Mahatma Gandhi were both some of the best leaders known to man. And both of these incredible leaders were so impactful to their country that the
had stories written about them. This is what we will be comparing and why Eulogy For Mahatma Gandhi is better than Long Walk to Freedom in
persuading the audience about which one was a greater supporter of human rights. But they both are good in different ways. Gandhi inspired India to
peacefully protest against Great Britain's rule while Mandela became the first black president of South Africa and stopped segregation there. This will
show why Jawaharlal Nehru's Eulogy For Mahatma Gandhi is better than Nelson Mandela's Long Walk to Freedom in persuading the reader that their
person is a better supporter of human rights.
Nelson Mandela's Long Walk to Freedom is an autobiography about his life trying to abolish segregation in South Africa. But in the Study Sync
exert Mandela hardly talks about how much he did to support human rights and it mostly talks about what state the country was in and what he
thinks about more than what he did. But from what we can get from the excerpt there is great information about what he did to defend human right
and how he did it. Mandela writes, "I knew as well as I knew anything that the oppressor must be liberated just as surely as the oppressed." This
reaches out to all people not just black people and shows that Mandela wants to help everyone not just the people who have been enslaved or
oppressed. Mandela also shares that, "...I joined the African National Congress, and that is when the hunger for my own freedom became the greater
hunger for the freedom of my people to live their lives with dignity and self–respect that animated my life, that transformed a frightened young man
into a bold one, that drove a law abiding attorney to become a criminal..." This shows that Mandela was politically active in trying to stop segregation

Louise Mallard Analysis
Louise Mallard is a despondent woman, she is the protagonist of "The Story of An Hour." She is depicted as an enduring woman who aches from
the pain of Heart Disease, however this is the least of her life shortened worries; she suffers from a sorrowful marriage, which threatens her own life
as portrayed by the author. An interaction of Mrs. Mallard and her sister Josephine who unknowingly thinks Mrs. Mallard is locking herself in the
room, making herself ill despite her enjoying the moment of freedom. Most of the thoughts run by the actor were during that scene. The story is
centered on how the character of Mrs. Mallard changed from the juncture of her husband's death at the moment her husband walks through the door at
the end of the story. Mrs. Mallard is depicted as a frail woman, when we see her bodily conditions such as her "as powerless as her two white slender
hands would have been" (251, paragraph 10) evidently portrays that she had frail hands, which show her weakness on top of her medical conditions,
her weakness eventually led to her death. Her relationship with her husband's depicts how weak woman's relationship of this society was. She's a
great example of many of nowadays marriages which are usually despairing "She did not stop to ask if it were a monstrous joy that held her" (251,
paragraph 12). Her husband is shown as foist, he is no different from men in this society, this usually means the women are weak with no choice other
than to obey their husbands "And

Long Walk To Freedom And Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
At times there are opposing forces preventing one from achieving the good life, causing some of the greatest things in life to be fought for. This
statement is supported by Nelson Mandela's Long Walk to Freedom and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s Letter from Birmingham jail. In Mandela's
life, the strict apartheid laws of his country prevented him and many others from living freely and similarly, Dr. King crusaded against racial
segregation. When oppressors refused to negotiate, compromise, and in one instance, even refused to follow federal law, both men were forced to
conduct acts of civil disobedience or better said, disregard discriminatory laws which led to the cost of imprisonment and to be an object of derision.
For Dr. King, he explained to his critics that in order to gain freedom, it was important to fight for it even if equality isn't "illegal". Dr. King then
relates how Hitler's mass extermination... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Martin Luther King Jr. had to spend time away from his family in order to conduct and lead the call for equality. In his fight for justice, he was
assassinated, robbing him of the opportunity to watch his children grow up and inherit the world he helped to shape. Also, no pain is greater for a
parent than to be separated from their children and it was exactly this that Mandela suffered through, "I was prevented from fulfilling my obligations
as a son, a brother, a father and a husband." He was not able to leave the rest of his kinsmen to wither under oppressive law but in doing so he
unintentionally brought pain to his family. Many of the memories, family dinners, and holidays that we take for granted were denied to both Mandela
and Dr. King. Both of these incredible men sacrificed personal comfort, time with family, and imprisonment in order to bring change to their countries.

Omelas Ethics
Omelas is a city that is free of most of the troubles modern day cities face, such as pollution. This city is anything one could want it to be, as laid
out by Le Guin. Omelas is an amazing place, where people can live freely and without worry, but they must live with the dark side of the city. Ethics
plays a big role in "The Ones Who Walk Away from Omelas" because the citizens must be cruel to this child, who is locked away from everything, for
Omelas to be a prosperous city.
The citizens of Omelas choose to treat the child in an inhumane way so the city can thrive. Le Guin writes "They may brood over it for weeks or
years. But as time goes on they begin to realize that even if the child could be released it would not get much good of freedom: ... Show more content on

Those who disapprove of the child's captivity would disappear "At times one of the adolescent girls or boy who go to see the child does not go
home... Sometimes also a man or women much older falls silent... and walk straight out of the city of Omelas, through the beautiful gates...they leave
Omelas, they walk ahead into the darkness, and they do not come back" (739). These people realize that they no longer want to live in a place where
it is acceptable to imprison a child, and treat him very cruelly, without much concern towards the child. Leaving the city is important because Omelas
is seen as a "city in a fairy tale" (736). Fairy tales are usually a fantasy about a world where everything ends happily ever after with dreams coming
true. The citizens of Omelas learn that "they, like the child, are not free" (739). The realization that they are trapped may be the reason that so many
of the citizens are no longer upset about the treatment of the child. All that is known about those that leave is that "The place they go towards is even
less imaginable to most of us than the city of happiness. I cannot describe it at all. It is possible that it does not exist" (739). Citizens leaving Omelas is
normal and helps to keep the city prosperous, because with them they take their disapproval of the child's

Critical Analysis Of Nelson Mandel Long Walk To Freedom
Mandela: Long Walk To Freedom
Nelson Mandela, a leader within the South African society but furthermore throughout the whole world, has spent his whole life pursuing fairness and
freedom for all. The composed philosophical quote presented within this assignment being, "Our single most important challenge is to establish a
social order in which the freedom of the individual will truly mean the freedom of the individual." appears to show a very calm and collected thought
process. This quotation has an extreme importance in the pursuit of true freedom, demanding not only rights, but true freedom to where the people can
experience life in an equal social order. Mandela's calmness throughout the people's and his struggle for freedom in South Africa attributed towards the
success eventually reached by Mandela, by not only giving the depiction of a calm knowledgeable leader, but also giving the opportunity to truly
reflect on political unrest and make a decision that will in the end benefit everyone within the situation, weather they are classified as black or white.
Mandela always had the ability to maintain a philosophical and calm mind set throughout the film. This gave him the ability, even when alone in
certain situations on certain topics, to push himself towards his true goal, achieving true freedom for the colored people of South Africa. This idea can

Civil Disobedience And Long Walk To Freedom Essay
The three authors of "Civil Disobedience," "On the Eve of Historic March," and "Long Walk to Freedom" believe that an individual person may bring
about social reform. Thoreau, Gandhi, and Nelson Mandela each aspire a nonviolent approach to situations and they have faith in the spirit of
individualism and optimism. These people made enormous differences in social reform and convinced others to do the same through speeches or other
methods.
Starting off, in "Civil Disobedience," Thoreau believed that the government should have very little power so that people can enjoy more freedoms and
make their own decisions on certain things. A motto that Thoreau heartily accepted is, "That government is best which governs least" (Thoreau 228).

All in all, Thoreau believed that an individual person could fortify the political system, society, and themselves. Next, in "On the Eve of Historic

nonviolence as the only means of the attainment of Swaraj be faithfully kept" (Gandhi 236). Specifically, in his speech, he encouraged people to
protest against the law that made Native Americans purchase taxed salt from the British by having a march. This would unify everyone and lead to
the secured freedom of Indians. Last, in "Long Walk to Freedom," Nelson Mandela prompted people to push for freedom so that everyone was free,
no matter what skin color they possessed. At first, he simply desired personal freedom, but then realized that other people weren't free either. This
caused him to not only push for freedom, but to enhance the freedom of others as well, as doing that was his definition of real freedom. "It was this

sympathy for the Africans. Yet, the young adults are only 'more and more quiet' and 'more and more angry.' By these repeated comparatives, the writer
contrasts their present feeling of resentment to their mood of celebration earlier. All the words are slowly seeping in but it only made them rather
'cross' as they thought the chief was being selfish and 'ignorant,' in his 'abusive comments,' since he was not noticing the positive side – the whites

Gradually, the pace slows and there is growth of mental maturity and realization as the true meaning of the chief's words began to seep in Mandela's

Martin Luther King through his memorable speech, "I Have a Dream," paved the way to freedom, to equality, and to justice for all Americans. Martin
Luther King carved a path to freedom despite unrelenting prejudice. While striving towards the God–given right of freedom, Dr. King reminded

The Long Walk Home And Sociological Perspective

  • 1. The Long Walk Home And Sociological Perspective Humans often take pride in their ability to think freely and act independently. However, many actions that we perform and certain ways we behave in society are often quickly overlooked and not questioned. We often do not understand why we perform certain tasks or adhere to certain rules. However, we still paradoxically pride ourselves in our freedom. By analyzing the sociological perspective, we can understand how much of a role society often plays in our actions and behavior as individuals in society. Certainly, the sociological perspective can allow us to analyze events in the movie The Long Walk Home more closely. The sociological perspective can allow us to understand how the actions of the characters are often chained and their behaviors controlled by society, through using the theories of social location, social control, and social stratification. The sociological perspective can also allow us to understand why these characters strangely adhered to these forms of oppressive control and often resisted change, through using role theory and the sociology of knowledge. Lastly, the sociological perspective will allow us to understand how actors can break free of these bindings, through using an interpretive analysis and applying concepts such as freedom, ecstasy, and bad faith. Overall, the sociological perspective allows us to understand the personalities, actions, and story of The Long Walk Home through revealing to us how these features were guided through control, ... • 2. Comparing Huckleberry Finn And Long Walk To Freedom Beyond a shadow of doubt, there are many lessons that I accomplished in both these books. Their story lines are amazing and they left me with powerful messages that are can be useful in my everyday life. Which is that freedom is for all because we are all humans, created equally, thus deserves to be treated as such. Moreover, though these books were written in different settings, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn which was written when slavery was still legal and Long Walk to Freedom, which was written secretly in prison, they remind us of identical memos about challenges and how wrong it can be. Also, that it can lead to fatalities and terrible endings. As well as, nobody was born racism, kids are taught it, therefore, racism is cruel. Lastly, listening to our hearts can sometimes be important because it is the only way for us to live according to the natural moral circle.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, gathered us civilization and human nature, in which Huck shows human nature through his freedom of spirit, civilized ways and his way to escape. Hypocrisy, society, racism and slavery were involved in a society in which Huck lived in along with people who are hypocrites, racist and they tried to change who he is. Also, it was a society placed on regulations and beliefs and other which ridiculous and inhuman things. In the book Long Walk to Freedom, delivered us social equality, how everyone is equal and that there is nobody above the other; Human rights and that everybody should have the right to be, to live and work where and who they please. Lastly, freedom and human sacrifice, can be hard sometimes to do or want something because you will always have to choose between two things in order to accomplish your ... • 3. Mandala And Wallenberg: What Make Heroes True Heroes Ke Chai Sept. 9th, 2015 Mandala and Wallenberg: What Make Heroes True Heroes Heroes can be found in various circumstances, and they can be anyone who saves the day. However, not all the heroes are Nelson Mandala or Raoul Wallenberg. Through comparing and contrasting the heroism of Mandala and Wallenberg as the article What I Learned From Raoul Wallenberg and the poem My Hero Mandala depicted, it can be presumed that there are mainly four distinctions between the remarkable heroic deeds of Nelson Mandala and Raoul Wallenberg which are the people whom they saved, their main enemies, their means of rescuing lives, and the status they had before they were granted heroes. The most conspicuous aspect of the differences between the heroism of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The strategies they used were quite different. Nelson Mandala first used bombs and weapons to fight against the government. Soon he failed and was kept in prison by the authority. Later he changed his mind, he decided to use the method called non–violent resistance to motivate his people just like Gandhi. He began to become a leader. Because of his antigovernment actions, his was kept in prison for 27 years. After his dark days in a prison which was built on a isolated island, he finally, as the poem My Hero Mandala said, ... no sad... but smiling, laughing... who was imprisoned but smiling and forgiving, found the only path to freedom, that was love. It was, like Mandala said himself, A long walk to freedom. After his brutal life in prison there was no violence in his heart anymore. He sacrificed his freedom to motivate the people in South Africa, eventually the government lost its control. The people voted Mandala to be the president of South Africa, thus they regained their human rights. In the poem My Hero Mandala the writer used a literature speech of repetition which repeated the words my hero Mandala for several time to show respect to Mandala, it strengthened the theme of the poem, and more importantly, it showed the supportive, respective and beloved attitude of every people in South Africa towards the national hero Mandala. This was the victory of Mandala, the victory of South Africa, as well as the victory of freedom and human rights. 50 years ago, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Of Nelson Mandela's Long Walk To Freedom, By... Throughout history, there has been those who fight for what they believe in and those who counterstrike these efforts. While the opposers may seem like the villains in the story, it is always possible to liberate them. These sentiments are mirrored in the ideas of both Nelson Mandela's "Long Walk to Freedom" and Sophocles' "Antigone." Mandela's commitment to the liberation of not only those who are oppressed, but those who have acted as their oppressors is one that can be found in a number of different narratives. Antigone proves Mandela's ideas regarding oppression through her determination and refusal to submit to Creon's tyrannical rulings, which lead to his personal liberation and self–reflection by the close of the piece. Creon, who becomes the new leader of Thebes at the start of "Antigone," rules with extreme professionalism and control. While these seem like positive traits, they become unreasonable when he decides to put his leadership over his familial bonds. Antigone, much like Mandela, refuses to let consequence come in between her and what she believes to be right. Antigone attempts to liberate Creon during their discussions regarding his plans for their brother, but it is not until she acts on her beliefs that he truly begins to see the wrongfulness of his actions. Antigone tells Creon "I was born to join in love, not hate" (Sophocles 85). In saying this, Antigone foreshadows and provides hope that Creon will be liberated from his original mindset. This idea is ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 6. The Power Of Freedom By Kate Chopin Ruben Joseph Daniel Roberts EFL 095–4103 17 November 2014 The Power of Freedom An Indispensable Right There are a variety of birds that make wonderful house pets, and most of these birds don't mind living in a cage. However, this is not the case for the cockatiel. When the cockatiel is not able to fly freely and have social interaction with other birds of its type, it becomes depressed and plucks out all of its feathers, one by one. It longs for freedom. The kind of freedom it would get out in the wild. According to Longman's Advanced American Dictionary, the word "freedom" is defined as "the right to do what you want without being controlled or restricted by anyone "(643). In 1894, Kate Chopin wrote "The Story of an Hour," to describe the constraints placed on women during the 19th century. During the 19th century women didn't have rights, their only roles were to be wives and mothers. Women didn't have any rights to make decisions, have freedom of speech or work outside the home. It is an obstacle in the face of liberty that everyone should have, but only men reaped the benefits during this time. However, in the story, the main character, Mrs. Mallard experiences freedom for a short period of time. Mrs. Mallard receives news that her husband Bently was killed in a train accident and her sister Josephine and friend take precautions to share the news because they know it will bring on deep sorrow. In contrast, the death of her husband brings on a new feeling that others might consider inappropriate after the death of a spouse. Kate Chopin shows this in the short story: She abandoned herself a little whispered word escaped her slightly parted lips. She said it over and over under her breath: "free, free, free!" (Chopin 327). The delicious breath of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 8. Louise Symbolism In The Story Of An Hour Within the tear jerking short story, The Story of an Hour by Kate Chopin, Kate Chopin offers insight on the ongoing battle of the main character and her loss of her husband. In the beginning of the story, Louise Mallard has to be informed about her husband's death. Since Louise suffers from heart trouble, her sister, Josephine, must inform her in a cautious manner. Brently, was announced dead by a local newspaper in which Brently has died due to a railroad disaster. Louise is perched against an open window in which she studies the outside environment closely. She begins to cry simultaneously trying to keep her emotions within. She soon repeats "free!" numerous amounts of times. Louise imagines seeing her husband's corpse and began to imagine... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Louise then exclaims, "free, free, free!" when she was told about the news of her husband's death (Chopin 13). Louise exclaims "free" multiple times because this is essentially her hidden feeling towards her husband's death, free. In direct correlation to Louise repetition of free, she sits near a window in which symbolizes her underlying feelings towards the oppressiveness of marriage. After all the time she stared out the window, "now there was a dull stare in her eyes, whose gaze was fixed away off yonder on one of those patches of blue sky. It was not a glance of reflection, but rather indicated a suspension of intelligent thought" (Chopin 13). Louise undergoes a change in mindset in which she suddenly realizes the freedom she received over Brently's death. The window is a symbol to her freedom, in which she enlightens herself after a few moments of thought. Lastly, irony plays a role in Louise's sudden death. The irony begins when Louise "breathed a quick prayer that life might be long. It was only yesterday she had thought with a shudder that life might be long" (Chopin 14). The death of Brently poured the negative influences in Louise's mind. She believed that her life was going to be long and dull when she was informed. Eventually, "the doctors came they said she had died of heart disease–of joy that kills" (Chopin 14). Shortly after she thought ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 9. Henry David Thoreau's Argument Analysis I think that Henry David Thoreau's argument is how human society isn't close enough to nature, and that we use the environment mostly for our interests. He wants people to be more attuned to the environment, and we should carefully observe the environment. Henry David Thoreau believes that we know ourselves only by knowing nature. We are apart of nature, knowing that is the only way to truly live. 1. According to Henry David Thoreau our relationship to nature is how we treat nature and the environment. We see ourselves as if we are in total control over nature and use it for our personal interests. When we believe that we have control over nature we think that we can do whatever we want with the environment, but Henry David Thoreau thinks ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 10. Huck Finn Obstacles The ambitions In life we all have different goals, so, do the characters in both these books. They each granted different goals in different ways of their own. The first goal was peace and without peace no one can co–operate with the other or with the enemy. Example, In Huck Finn, when Huck met Jim at the Jackson Island and once he knew more about him, like having a family, feelings etc. He began protecting him by hiding him. Jim also does the same thing and he began to treat Huck as his own son, though, he knew that Huck pops was racist. He also began being a father figure to him and it shows that without the other, they would not have been free at the end because they needed each other. Another example, in Long Walk, when Mandela came back from Ethiopia, he continued working with the ANC as always and this time he included a white person in it though it was not permitted. He knew that that person will be able to help him and give him all the information he needed. Therefore, these examples show that in order to achieve the... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Also another, example from Long Walk to Freedom, before Mandela went to prison the third time, he and his comrades from the ANC campaign, they figured that if they don't come up with a plan, the whites will take everything from them. So they decided to divide into groups and each group had a certain area in which they will send a message of what they plan was and their roles. • 11. Internal Conflict In Anthem By Ayn Rand There has always been a slight apprehension towards being alone or standing alone. Students rarely want to admit to having an answer different from the rest of their classmates; some people do not want to go somewhere and do something by themselves. Notably, with more shy or anxious people, they will often stick around someone they know, so they will not be alone in the crowd. Although that company might help them make it through those nerve–wracking moments, when is the right time for them to walk alone? Should a person ever walk alone? In Ayn Rand's Anthem, Equality's internal conflict of conformity versus individuality plays a role that Equality needs to overcome in order to complete their quest for freedom which helps create their outcast archetype and gives significance to the final word of the novel. The internal conflict in Anthem plays a role within the novel by providing the complication that the protagonist, Equality, has to overcome in order to complete their quest. Equality is on a quest for freedom and for knowledge, even though it will separate them from their brothers. From the beginning of the novel until the third chapter, Equality notes how they commit transgressions against their society, such as preference, and how they are different from their brothers, an example being Equality's height of 6 feet tall. In the third chapter, Equality more or less accepts their fate of being alone, even though the internal conflict still silently lurks in the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Mandela begins his book with a description of his ancestry and later goes on to talk about his early childhood, which mainly consisted on herding cattle and practicing a traditional southern South African type of martial art. When Mandela became of age, his father sent him to school, which was a rare privilege for a child in his village. Mandela transcended at school and his uncle decided to invest on Nelson's school success by sending him to a series of exclusive boarding schools. In the following sections of his biography, Mandela describes his young adulthood and his gradual metamorphosis into a leader of South Africa's freedom and equality movement. As a young adult, Nelson moved to Johannesburg and became an active member in the African National Congress (ANC), an organization dedicated to fight for the rights of black South Africans. Mandela joins the ANC's Youth League; a subgroup that advocated similar, but more radical ideals than the main organization, in which he adopted a leadership role. • 13. Story Of An Hour Literary Analysis Freedom and control are concepts everyone wishes to possess, but some struggle to obtain them. For example in "The Story of an Hour" by Kate Chopin the main character is told that her controlling and repressive husband has died in a train accident. At first she sobs like a small child and hides in her room, but she soon realizes she is free to live a life for herself. With her newfound happiness, she returns downstairs right as her husband, alive and well, is walking through the front door. Mrs. Mallard is said to have died "of a joy that kills" (qtd. in Meyer 16). Another example of a struggle to obtain freedom is in "A Rose for Emily" by William Faulkner. The main character, Emily, is controlled by her father. After her father passes away she is desperate for a loving relationship. Her last... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Although both stories possess the theme of freedom, as well as sympathetic characters, the attempt to gain freedom is vastly different. Freedom is a common theme in both Chopin's and Faulkner's story, but the processes taken by the main characters to obtain, or try to obtain, that freedom is dissimilar. In Chopin's story freedom is obtained, but not how the main character predicted. Chopin writes, "As powerless as her two white slender hands would have been," and later states, "There would be no powerful will bending hers" (qtd. in Meyer 15). These two quotes are great examples of how Mrs. Mallard has felt helpless for years because her husband has been bending her will and taking her power away. When her husband is said to be dead, she believes she is finally free and even repeats the word a few times, "free, free, free" (qtd. in Meyers 15) But as Louise returns downstairs to her sister, the door opens and in walks Brently ... The autobiography, "Long Walk to Freedom" by Nelson Mandela is about Mandela writing about how his life was, him being born free, but even before he was born, white people had made a racial domination against his own people. Shockingly in many of the stories I've read the exact opposite happens and they fight through these tough situations and always manage to stay positive no matter what is thrown at them. Anne Frank, Nelson Mandela and Louis Zamperini are perfect examples of people who were physically and emotionally incarcerated and they never let it bring them down. Instead, they used their incarceration as motivation to better the situation they were in. Reading many of the poems in class really gives you a sense of how a person is feeling in such little words. It describes the environment around them, how they are dealing with is and what their thoughts are on it. A poem I feel does incredibly well with this this "Some Advice to Those Who Will Serve Time inPrison". This poem describes a man in prison with a lot of time to serve and how he feels about it. Prison makes him feel powerless and like he has no control of his life because he can't make decisions for himself anymore. He can't control when he eats, showers or even when he wakes up in the morning, basically the only thing he can control is how he deals with this new way of life. In the short story "The Story of an Hour" written by Kate Chopin symbolism and Irony are used to show the freedom the character (Mrs. Mallard) wants from her husband. Mrs. Mallard is forced into an emotional roller coaster that eventually brings out her true feelings of freedom. The story has different symbols in the meaning of freedom to and how ironic these symbols become to Mrs. Mallard at the end of the story. The citizens of Omelas choose to treat the child in an inhumane way so the city can thrive. Le Guin writes "They may brood over it for weeks or years. But as time goes on they begin to realize that even if the child could be released it would not get much good of freedom: ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Those who disapprove of the child's captivity would disappear "At times one of the adolescent girls or boy who go to see the child does not go home... Sometimes also a man or women much older falls silent... and walk straight out of the city of Omelas, through the beautiful gates...they leave Omelas, they walk ahead into the darkness, and they do not come back" (739). These people realize that they no longer want to live in a place where it is acceptable to imprison a child, and treat him very cruelly, without much concern towards the child. Leaving the city is important because Omelas is seen as a "city in a fairy tale" (736). Fairy tales are usually a fantasy about a world where everything ends happily ever after with dreams coming true. The citizens of Omelas learn that "they, like the child, are not free" (739). The realization that they are trapped may be the reason that so many of the citizens are no longer upset about the treatment of the child. All that is known about those that leave is that "The place they go towards is even less imaginable to most of us than the city of happiness. I cannot describe it at all. It is possible that it does not exist" (739). Citizens leaving Omelas is normal and helps to keep the city prosperous, because with them they take their disapproval of the child's ...
