RESPONSE
ALTERNATE RESPONSE
■It is a test wherein there are
only two possible answers to
the question.
Example:
Direction:WriteTRUE, if the statement is
true, FALSE, if it is false.
_______1.) Lapulapu was the first Asian to
repulse European colonizers in Asia.
_______2.)The Arabs introduced Islam in
southern Philippines.
Guidelines in writing alternate response type of
test:
■Avoid using negative statements
■Avoid using unfamiliar or esoteric language.
■Avoid long, complex statements
■Include relatively equal numbers of true and
false statements
■Refrain from creating a pattern of
response.
■Present similar number of true and false
statement.
■A statement must only have one central
idea.
■Avoid quoting exact statements from the
textbook.
Advantage of Alternate
Response
■Can test large amounts of content
■True-false are adaptable to the
measurement of a wide variety of
learning outcomes
■Quick and easy to grade
■If constructed well, can be highly reliable
in assessing student knowledge
Disadvantage of Alternate Response
■It is difficult to discriminate between
students that know the material and
students who do not
■Individual true-false items are less
discriminating than individual multiple
choice items
■There is a tendency to write trivial true-false
items, which lead students to verbatim
memorization
■True-false items are not amenable to
concepts that cannot be formulated as
propositions
■The extent of students’ command of a
particular area of knowledge is indicated
by their success in judging the truth or
falsity of propositions related to it
EXERCISE:
■Write at least five alternate
response questions following
the guidelines in writing the
alternate response type of
test.
