Circus Maximus
Circus Maximus It is nearly impossible to look at the field that holds the remains of the Circus
Maximus and understand what it once held without the aid of a vivid reconstruction. The remains of
Circus Maximus lie in the Valley between the Aventine and Palentine hill. Traditionally, the history
of the Circus Maximus began with chariot races held in honor of the God Consus in a less
permanent structure in the area near Consus's altar. In later years, this lead to the construction of a
circus under the first Etruscan king, Tarquinius Priscus around 600 bc. Previous to Tarquin's
intervention, an underground stream kept the valley swamp like. Tarquin diverted the water and
drained the area and began to hold chariot races in the area. The ... Show more content on

Racers were expected to remain in their chalked lanes until passing a marked break line at which
time the charioteers were free to take any position on the track. The jargoning for the ideal location
on the track often made racing a dangerous sport. The chariot races traditionally consisted of seven
laps about the track counterclockwise. Turning posts dubbed matae consisted of 3 gilded bronze
cones set atop a hemispherical shaped block. The races lasted somewhere in the realm between eight
and nine minutes and the race length was measured to be near three miles. More often than not,
chariots were pulled by four horses. At the beginning of the races, it is suspected that chariots were
owned privately and the charioteers hired by the owners. Over time factions, a system of
professional chariot racing organizations emerged. The timing of the initial use of factions is
expected to have been sometime shortly after the Second Punic War. The factions seem to have
emerged over time out of need rather than by a specific mandate. The amount of chariot races and
popularity of the sport a public need for organization became apparent. The efficiency offered by
factions was a popular solution to the inadequacy of the previous system. The faction owners had
teams of workers and all sorts of resources for their athletes. The horses, chariots,

Ancient Egypt Essay
Ancient Egypt is a fascinating ancient civilization. The Egyptian culture was heavily polytheistic
with a complex view of the afterlife, which was evident in their architecture and communication.
Even today as ancient Egypt melts together with modern Egypt. The pull of their ancient cities is
still seen in Cairo and Alexandia.
The highly developed belief of polytheism in the Egyptian culture was made up of many gods. This
belief is the base to the Egyptian culture and life. In the Egyptian polytheistic culture the gods took
on form and characteristics of objects found in nature. The Egyptian god Ra is considered the father
of gods and was the most important and worshiped god. When the Egyptians think of the figure that

During the fourth dynasty pharaohs were known as "the sons of Ra". Ra was a primary god in the
fifth dynasty, which is when he became associated with the king and then the pharaoh. Ra became
more and more popular during the new kingdom, which resulted in a sort of monotheism.
The Eye of Ra is an Egyptian symbol for protection and the divine royal power. This symbol even
appears on the United Sates dollar bill. The eye within the pyramid represents Ra awaiting rebirth.
Even though the Eye of Ra is within the pyramid his soul remains alive and watchful as the open
eye indicates. Osiris is the Egyptian god of the underworld. Osiris is one of five children born to
Geb and Nut; the god of earth and the goddess of the skies. He was also the great grandson of Ra.
All of Osiris's siblings played an important role in his story: Seth, his brother and his two sisters Isis
and Nepthys. Osiris inherited the throne of Egypt because he was the first born son if Geb and Nut.
Though Osiris and Isis were brother and sister they were married and were not destined to be happy.
Osiris's other sister, Nephthys, at one point takes on the appearance of Isis and presented herself as
Isis. Osiris, not knowing the difference, was seduced by Nephthy; she had Anubis. Seth developed a
jealousy toward Osiris either because Osiris had inherited the throne or because he had gotten
Nephthy, Seth's wife, pregnant. Seth sought to kill Osiris by luring Osiris into a coffin and

Auguste Rodin's Works
The Thinker: Auguste Rodin sculpted the Thinker between 1881 and 1919. The original thinker is
currently located in Musée Rodin, which is located in Paris, France. The Thinker, originally
constructed to represent Dante Degli Alighieri pondering his famous poem, The Divine Comedy,
was made to be on top of the compositional piece Rodin created as an entranceway for the Musée
des Arts Décoratifs. This piece, known as The Gates of Hell, is based on Dante's 16th century poem,
The Divine Comedy. For this reason, the original name of The Thinker was The Poet; however, as
the piece began to gain precedence over The Gates of Hell, its name was changed, and today it is
commonly recognized as a symbol of philosophy and learning. The Thinker also became known as a
symbol of the socialist movement in France during 1906 and onwards, which was a time of political
and social turmoil. As a result of The Gates of Hell, Rodin's most famous works would appear to the
public. These pieces include The Kiss, The Age of Bronze, The Monument of Balzac, and The
Burghers of Calais. The Thinker was created at the front of Impressionist Sculpture; however,
Auguste Rodin never showed his work under the title of Impressionism, therefore it is difficult to
associate Rodin with this period of art. Rodin's work has remained one of the most innovative and
groundbreaking of any sculptors in the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Mummy In Popular Culture
Introduction: Mummies adorn the exhibits of hundreds of American and European museums alike
and their presence in popular culture of our society has been a consistent one for over a hundred
years. To the men and women of the twenty–first century, the mummy still represents the mysterious
and the ancient. And although we are influenced by the images and concepts of the numerous
literary works, plays, paintings, and films that depict the mummy in a state of resurrection, for the
modern audience the mummy is ultimately an artifact. The hard science of our time has gone beyond
the hope of resurrecting the long dead; Frankestien's monster is an impossibility.
In the nineteenth century, European and American fascination with Egypt and her mummies

Essay on The Washington Monument
The Washington Monument
The most stunning monument in our capital is the Washington Monument. At 555 feet high, it is the
tallest such monument in the world. It is an obelisk by shape, yet not a true obelisk because it is not
carved out of a single stone. The monument was built at intervals between 1848 and 1885. It
memorializes George Washington's achievements and his devotion to principles and to his country.
The Washington Monument has an interesting history. The idea of a monument celebrating George
Washington was first considered by the Continental Congress in 1783. However, the next three
decades brought neglect by Congress to take action. Finally, in 1833 the Washington National
Monument Society was organized to forward the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
History of the Obelisk
The design of the Washington Monument is a common obelisk and can be found around the world.
Its history begins in Egypt. There were a great many obelisks in Egypt, 13 were originally in Karnak
where now only 5 stand. Possibly the best known obelisk in Egypt is at the Temple of Luxor in
Thebe. This obelisk was raised by Ramses II. He is credited with raising over fourteen obelisks at
Tanis alone. The obelisk at the Temple of Luxor was originally one of a pair of obelisks. This
missing obelisks was later removed and brought to Paris where it stands in the Place de la Concorde.
Many of the obelisks that were originally in Egypt are now in different parts of the world. It appears
that these obelisks were the focus of conquerors of Egypt. For example, the Persian leader
Cambyses dragged many of these obelisks to the ground and mutilated them. He especially targeted
those obelisks which bore the inscriptions of cruel deeds that were performed against the Persians.
The destruction of these obelisks by conquerors suggests that these enormous structures represented
the power of Egyptian leaders and were very important to the Egyptians.
Later conquerors removed many of these obelisks as souvenirs. Two great obelisks, which stood in
Egypt for a millennium and a half, were brought to Rome to commemorate Julius Caesar. These
became known as Cleopatra's needles. Ironically, one is now in London and

Personal Narrative: My First Vietnam War
All of my problems began and ended with a book and a statue. I was currently surrounded by dozens
of giant carnivorous lizards. This explanation may be slightly confusing for you, so please allow me
to tell my story. I was a 28–year–old professor at Washington State University. I lived in an
apartment on the west side of Pullman. I was a bachelor, and I enjoyed the single life. I passed the
time by studying ancient statues, figurines, and monsters. I had traveled the globe and met creatures
that you could only imagine. I enjoyed teaching students who weren't much younger than I was, and
some of them were close friends. One day, a package arrived at my door. I opened it. Inside was a
leather–bound book covered in strange symbols. I opened the book, and the every page inside was
covered in words written in an odd language. There were images of horrific demons and phantoms
shown throughout. I did some research on the book. After two years of ... Show more content on

about the deaths, but my prize was more important than a few lives. We drove through the flames.
The long, winding path through the forest had a fork in the road. We went left, through a wall of
hedges. This turned out to be the correct choice. I looked up to a gigantic temple. It must have been
at least four hundred feet high, with nearly three hundred fifty steps. Afu and I raced up the stairs,
but we were both tired by the time we were halfway there. We slowly walked up. As we reached the
top. As I looked down, I realized that our vehicle was not the only in the vicinity. We raced in

The passage of time continues its long journey as present becomes the past. We, as humans, have
always viewed the past as a valuable asset capable of assisting us towards greater heights. We,
therefore, strive to preserve our history in order pass it to the next generation, without alterations. To
accomplish such a task, our society created monuments–structures that would last for long periods
of time and would be able to preserve our memories, understandings and perception of an event
and/or a significant personality. Consequently, our country harbors countless monuments and
memorials which allow us to understand own history, and comprehend the numerous achievements

Personal Narrative Essay-Creative Writing : A Beautiful...
I woke up to the sound of crashing ocean waves, and the soft, fluffy feel of sand. Even though the
loud yet peaceful sound of the ocean was almost the only thing I could hear, I heard the soft ¨PIT–
PAT¨ of teeny foot steps before they suddenly sped up and went another direction. Then, everything
that was happening sunk in, and I opened my eyes to see a beautiful island. I didn't remember where
I was, or how I had gotten here, or anything else for that matter. The only thing I could remember
was my name.
After I opened my eyes, I got up to my feet and realized that I felt this itchy, scratchy feeling on my
wrist. I looked down to see some sort of glowing implant in it! I scratched at it a little before I
decided it was pointless, and that it was a good idea to get moving. I was thinking about my next
move, when I got an empty feeling in my stomach. I needed to find something to eat and find it fast
because if I didn't, I'd be stuck without food for the night. Water was another thought that had
crossed my mind, along with the possibility of freezing to death over the night. As I was looking for
food, I thought of how I could kill three birds with one stone, and an idea came to mind.
I quickly ran over to a grove of bushes that were covered in berries. I could eat the berries for my
thirst and hunger problems, and then use the fibers from the bushes to mend together some thin
clothes. Although they weren't anything special, they would definitely get me through the night. As

How Did Egypt Technology Affect Society
Ancient Egypt was one of the world's most advanced civilizations which impacts society to this day
through its achievements in building, technology, communications, and medicine. Some examples
of egyptian influence on today's world are the Washington monument, our calendar system, writing,
the alphabet system, aromatherapy, and herbal medicine. Egypt has made many scientific,
architectural, and engineering milestones which have propelled society towards many technological
breakthroughs. Without the Egyptians important accomplishments, society would never have been
as advanced, intelligent, and sophisticated as it is today.

Social Contract Is The Formidable Obelisk For...
Social Contract is the formidable obelisk for peacebuilding and statebuilding. One of the oldest and
widely cited Social Contract theories is the one of theorist's John Rawls. His theory proposed an
objective perspective of the Social Contract concept that was rooted from medieval Europe, this
widely accepted principle that "all men are by nature free and equal" (Lessnoff, 1990, p. 3) made
Rawls disparate to his brethren who too theorized this concept. Rawls rendition of the theory was
not only non–traditional to the views of his predecessors (i.e. 'Junius Brutus', Thomas Hobbes, Jean–
Jacques Rousseau, and John Locke) it also presented principles of social justice, the origin of
society, and placed the state's action as a standard which was a stark difference to other political
philosophical theories.
For the purpose of this proposal, the Rawlsian contract will be applied as the base of my argument;
this proposal will begin by defining key terminologies, it will then proceed to detail the origins of
the Social Contract, it will analyze popular Social Contract theories, it will interpret shared and
competing assumptions, and lastly the evidence that support my main argument that the Social
Contract is the foundation of peacebuilding and statebuilding will be scrutinized.
In order to ensure that the argument will have its optimal impact, the definitions of key words will
be presented in this section. To begin, the definition of Social Contact that will be utilized is that of

Memorialization Of The Great War
This thesis has aimed to widen local studies on the memorialisation of the Great War. The study of
remembrance is ever expanding, with historians, local researchers and organisations aiming to
broaden the spectrum of research on the topic. Historians have researched memorialisation from
local to international level and the wide spectrum of studies allows for a better understanding of how
people and communities reacted to the Great War. Of the 5,704,416 men mobilised by Britain,
around 723,000 died. Since the dead were buried overseas in war cemeteries, it was down to
communities throughout Britain to erect war memorials for their fallen. War memorials became
focal points of commemorative and anniversary events for the Great War, they were a way in which
future generations could pay their respects to the dead and could also show as a reminder the
influence that a worldwide war had on a community and country. There are around 38,000 war
memorials in Britain, while in the North East of England, the number amounts to around 2,001 , and
in Middleton–in–Teesdale there are three dedicated to the Great War. This thesis focused ... Show

Concord Hymn Meaning
Ralph Waldo Emerson was an American essayist, lecturer, and leader of the transcendentalist
movement. Emerson wrote a "Concord Hymn," a poem which commemorates the Battle of Concord
, one of the first battles in the American Revolution. "Concord Hymn" was, sung to the tune of the
hymn "Old Hundredth," at the unveiling of the Obelisk, a monument that marks the spot where the
battle of Concord took place . The speaker writes the poem to inform the reader about the American
Revolution and the place where it all began and to persuade the reader to appreciate the men who
fought for freedom. The speaker describes the Battle of Concord through the use of imagery. He
describes the impact of the battle by using the point of view of the Americans in the Battle of the
Concord. Some scenes are the flag that represented America at the time, the bridge where the battle
took place, and the first shot fired. The North Bridge is not only the location of the battle in the
1700s, but the Obelisk today. " By the rude bridge that arched the flood" (Emerson 1), the first shot

The Fifth Season Sparknotes
Okay, so this is how this is going to work... The deep book review will be split into different
sections, one where I will dump a bunch of information about the storyline on the reader, another
where I will rant about what makes this book deep but not good, and, finally, another about the
author. The footnotes will be my way of interjecting Laszlo–esque commentary on what would
normally be a more formal piece of writing without drastically altering the formality of the review.
Throughout the book, The Fifth Season changes from Syenite to Damaya to, finally, a character
referred to as 'you' (as you might expect, all chapters written from you's perspective are written in
second person). As the book moves on, switching from character to character, similarities between
Syenite and Damaya start to appear, until, chapter seventeen, when it is revealed Damaya is just a
young Syenite. Towards the end, Syenite is revealed to be you (your name is Essun). So all along,

Earth lost his favorite child, so, in an attempt to appease Father Earth, some of the stone eaters

getting ready to catch the moon. Pure awesomeness aside, I feel like I liked it better when things

forest of Northern California. The Pentagram is also connected with the Illuminati. George
Washington and Thomas Jefferson appointed a freemason to design the layout of Washington D.C.
The layout of the streets makes a pentagram, although the pentagram is not quite completed . The
number 666, which is the number of the Beast, is suggested to be a part of the Illuminati. It is also
associated with the Anti–Christ, which would eventually take over the helm of the Illuminati.
Another Illuminati symbol would be the eternal flame. The Statue of Liberty is a prime example of
the eternal flame with her lighted torch. The Statue of Liberty is the pagan goddess, Semiramis, the
whore of Babylon. She represents the destruction of the Old World Order and the creation of the
New World Order . Another important symbol of the Illuminati is the skull. The skull reminds young
initiates of their morality. An Obelisk is a monument built of stone. The Obelisk built in Washington

How Does Ancient Egyptian Culture Affect Modern Day Society's?
Ancient Egypt was the first civilization to make use of the sciences, including math and medical
uses. Clocks, sports, a twelve month calendar, farming, building are also believed to originate in
Ancient Egypt. All of these influences our everyday lives.
The Egyptians created a decimal system that used seven different symbols. Mathematical text can be
traced back to around 2000 – 1800 BC. By then the Egyptians had a grasp of multiplication,
division, prime numbers, geometry and fractions.

Obelisks can also be found as tombstones in U.S. cemeteries. The modern day alphabet is believed
to have been influenced by a complex system of hieroglyphs, which used 24 symbols for
consonants, along with many other symbols. The Egyptians invented the 354 day lunar calendar
made up of 12 months that correlated with the lunar cycle. It was split into three seasons that
reflected the natural cycle of the River Nile, flood, spring and low water. The year started with the
reappearance of the star Sirius, which signaled the rising of the Nile River. A 365 day calendar was
later invented, consisting of 12 lunar months of 30 days, and then split into three seasons, and five
extra days at the end of the year. It was not until 30 BC that the Romans added an extra day to every
fourth month to give us the calendar we use today.
The Ancient Egyptians brought to us many inventions, such as Scissors, combs, toothbrushes and
toothpaste. They are also credited with creating the lock and key, the weaving loom, drums, and the
first oil lamps.
Wooden door locks were used to protect the property. A hollowed out bolt was connected to pins
that could be moved by inserting a key. Egyptian locks were more secure than spring locks later
used by the Romans. Like many of the ancient civilizations, ancient Egypt wasn't the most
sophisticated when it came to medicine, but they were ahead of the rest of the world in

The Tello Obelisk Monument from Chavan de Huantar
:
The Tello Obelisk Monument from Chavin de Huantar The Tello Obelisk is an Early Horizon
monument in Chavin de Huantar filled with cultigen depictions featuring a pair of individual pairs
flying in the shaman position while grasping particular sections of a rope with an artistic exhibition
of early Andean iconography. The monument, a prismatic granite monolith, hails from the North
Central part of Peru, an archaeological site known as Chavin de Huantar, featuring one of the most
complex and unique stone carvings of American in its time–period. Chavin is located between the
Cordillera Negra and Cordillera Blanca, on a pass to the high elevation valley that is situated along
the Callejon de Huaylas (James 2–4).

The four sides of the Tello Obelisk were curved to form a rectangular shaft, and Weistenmantel (68)
asserts that the obelisk might have been "an object of a cult religion rather than being a the simple
piece of artistic and architectural decoration" that people thought it to be. The caymans on the
obelisk were sculptured with symbols of fish tails. The Tello Obelisk soot out for its evidential
exhibition of the outstanding Chavin lithic art employed in the monument because of its breath–
taking appearance, complex system of artistic and sculptural decoration, series of various terraces
and squares as well as the elements of extraordinary beauty brought about by the anthromorphic,
zoomographic iconographic artistic decoration (Rowe 47).
Correlation of the Obelisk with the Old Temple is figuratively supported by Julio Tello's stylistic
comparison of the monument with the Lanzon, which was another key monolithic art at Chavin. The
Lanzon, however, is still embedded in the compound of the Old Temple in Chavin as it secures its
temporal placement. Rowe's characterization of the monument at Chavin entails a representational
and conventional meaning that results from its multiple conventions that make it difficult to
decipher (James 8). The conventions include repetition, the artistic employment of standardized
measures, symmetry, and metaphoric or substitutional representation for instance,

Nubia's Influence On African Civilization
African culture has impacted civilization since the late B.C era of history. Before the Europeans
started colonization of African regions, Africa was already a well oiled machine. Able to generate
production of metals, food, and clothing for trade throughout the continent and beyond. Although
Egypt is mostly known for much of the wealth and prosperity in African history, two other regions
also held promise of growth and wealth as well. Nubia has been recognized for its production of
literature with its strong capital of Kerma where most of the libraries were placed. Not only was
Nubia prominent in its literary works, Ethiopia contributed to writing systems as well as crafting
intricate clothing with their special skills in weaving that produced most of their trade at the time.
Ethiopia was also named the city of Aksum standing for "the greatest powers on Earth." This name
was powerful for such a state because it once meant the entirety of Africa itself. Ethiopia was as
powerful and independent as Egypt, creating their own language that has been rooted to arabic
tongue as well. Ethiopia was able to produce iron for trade amongst the other two major powers of
Africa at the time, Nubia and Egypt. These people were able to conquer parts of arabia and set up

Hieroglyph Research Paper
The civilization of the pharaohs went into eclipse more 2000 years ago when it conquered by
Alexander the Great and came under the Hellenistic rule of the Ptolemy dynasty. The word
Hieroglyph derives from the Greek for "sacred carving". In the first century BC, Siculus believed
that the Egyptian writings was built up from the appearance of the things drawn and by their
metaphorical meaning, which was learned by heart. Whereas Horapollo, in the 4th century AD or
later believed that the hieroglyphs were both fictitious and genuine. During 1419, a manuscript was
discovered on a Greek island, which lead the Greek and Roman to believe in hieroglyphic wisdom.

Essay about The Washington Monument
The Washington Monument
The Washington Monument, a memorial structure designed and constructed in the nineteenth
century, signifies an important tribute to the prestigious role and achievements of our nation's
founding father. Ideas for such a monument first arose in 1783, by which time "the fame George
Washington, Commanding General and first President of the United States, was assured in the
pantheon of statesmen of the world" (1). It was during this year that the Continental Congress
proposed an "equestrian statue" in honor of "Washington's services and his unique role in the
founding of the new Republic" (1).
Despite the project's popularity with the public, however, little action was taken following ... Show

Despite the difficulties that were faced during both the planning and construction of the Washington
Monument, the impressive tributary obelisk still stands today as one of the nation's "noblest
architectural structures" (1).
Prior to beginning construction in 1848, the government spent nearly seventy years in legislation.
Shortly after it was decided in 1783 that an "equestrian statue" should be erected in honor of George
Washington, a French landscape engineer by the name of Major Charles Pierre L'Enfant drew up the
first plan for Washington's future capital, including the statue as "one of the principal features of the
Federal District" (1). The idea resurfaced after the death of George Washington in December of
1799, when a proposal made by U.S. Representative John Marshall suggested the erection of a
marble monument under which the founder's body would be deposited. But Congress could take no
immediate action due to conflicting opinions in both the House and Senate and with Washington's
family members: when the House "appropriated $200, 000 for the construction of ... [a] 'mausoleum
of American granite and marble, in pyramidal form 100 feet square at the base and of proportionate
height'" (1), the grant was opposed by the Senate and family members (who did not want to move
the remains from the site where Washington had specifically asked they be placed).
"Throughout the Nation there was a deep sense of disappointment over the

George Washington served in the Continental Army and became one of the Founding Fathers of the
United States. Becoming the first president of the newly formed United States, President
Washington set many precedents. George Washington's precedents include but are not limited to :
peaceful transition of power, policy of neutrality, two–term presidency, and adoption of the title "Mr.
President". The Washington Monument stands at 555 feet tall. For me, seeing this structure was
breathtaking. The construction of the obelisk began on July 4th, 1848 but halted after insufficient
funds. As a result, the Washington Monument was constructed out of two different sources of
marble. I thought that was very neat as it gives the obelisk more character. Therefore, George

George Weigel's Analysis
According to the Letter Two: The Papal Basilica of St. Peter's, Rome in the Letters to a Young
Catholic by George Weigel (2015), New St. Peter's was built without any systematic excavation of
what was underneath Old St. Peter's. As a result, the 1940's full–scale archaeological excavation was
quietly preceded by Pope Pius XII to make room for the tomb of his predecessor, Pope Pius XI. This
said operation, later on, made way for the Scavi (excavations). Thus, unfolding historical tangibility
and the teachings of the Gospel as a basis for our stand in our faith as a Catholic was the thesis
statement of Sir George Weigel in his article. The latter thought was the thesis statement of the
article because the weight between the Scavi and the Gospel teachings presented a situation wherein
the belief of any individual lies on the answer of each true faith and being a Catholic. In 2015,
Weigel stated that archaeology yields probabilities rather than certainties. Now with that in mind,
there were different evidences that would support the thesis statement that the author ... Show more

However, we still tried our best to learn so that we would be able to contrast the difference of
Muslims from Christianity or other religions for us to gain more knowledge about them. There were

To visit a place wherein a obelisk stood was to visit the place of God on earth. Such a powerful
association foreshadows the great importance of the Phallic form throughout history.
However, when considering the Obelisk, it is possible to note that whereas the true Phallic Form is
curvaceous and rounded, the Egyptian obelisk is sharp and pointed, less indicative of the Phallus as
it is a mere act of defiance to the skies. Herein, then, lies the true point of interest. Did the Egyptians
consider the Obelisk a phallus, or merely a directional pointer, indicating, as it were, the source of
it's power via a bold gesture towards the heavens? Regardless of the answer to this question, it
cannot be denied that, like the phallic form, the Obelisk is long, hard (as they were atypically
created with substances other than granite or sandstone), and at least reminiscent of Phalli.
Interestingly enough, the Romans fell remarkably in love with the Obelisk, resulting in the creation
of at least 400 more Obelisks in Rome itself than in the entirety of Egypt. This is quite relevant
considering the historical obsession the ancient Roman Empire had with the literal phallus. One has
but to visit the ruins of Pompeii to see that the Romans were no novice to the usage of the phallus as
a vehicle for pleasure and escape from the day to day drudgeries. Indeed, perhaps this is what they

Ancient Egyptian Art And Art Essay
Ancient Egyptian sculpture was influential for the time and as well as today through many methods
including various sculpture and pottery ranging from colossal obelisks to tiny pieces of pottery.
Egyptian developments in sculpture and pottery show aspects of religion, the spreading of their
culture, and advanced design. Egyptian sculptures was influenced by their religion through many
methods. One of these methods were the obelisks, there happened to be specific rules for them as
they were after all designed for the kings or queens of that time. According to Encyclopedia
britannica an obelisk has"All four sides of the obelisk's shaft are embellished with hieroglyphs that
characteristically include religious dedications, usually to the sun god, and commemorations of the
rulers."–("Obelisk"). The obelisk was one of the main forms that the people connected with their
gods and the amazing craftsmanship that went into the design of the statue. Also, as the pharaohs
were classified as "gods among men", the sculptures dedicated to them were believed to hold special
power towards those pharaohs, especially during the time of the Old Kingdom. "Throughout
Egyptian history, the statuary of royals has had a firm funerary grounding. This is definitely true for
the Old Kingdom, as it was still strongly believed the statute could hold divine power"–("Royal

Hatshepsut : Major Achievements In Ancient Egypt
One of Hatshepsut's major achievements was expanding the trade routes of Ancient Egypt. Most
notably was an expedition to the Land of Punt, which became a major trade partner supplying Egypt
with gold, resin, wood, ivory, and wild animals. Scholars still debate the exact location of Ancient
Punt, but many believe it to be roughly modern–day Somalia to Sudan.
Due partially to these new trade networks, her reign was marked by wealth, prosperity, and peace.
Hatshepsut sent five massive ships to open trade with Punt; they returned filled with 30 live myrrh
trees and other gifts, including frankincense. According to legend, Hatshepsut was the first to turn
charred frankincense into eye–liner. Apparently, she knew how to accessorize.
Besides trade, Hatshepsut also oversaw an immense period of building across Egypt and may be
responsible for hundreds of grand buildings and statues, along with her architect Ineni. Like most
pharaohs, she added buildings to the massive temple complex at Karnak, but also restored old
temples there and had two obelisks erected there; at the time, they were the tallest in the world.
Hatshepsut undertook ambitious building projects, particularly in the area around Thebes. Her
greatest achievement was the enormous memorial temple at Deir el–Bahri, considered one of the
architectural wonders of ancient Egypt. Another great achievement of her reign was a trading
expedition she authorized that brought back vast riches–including ivory, ebony, gold, leopard

modern audience the mummy is ultimately an artifact. The hard science of our time has gone beyond
the hope of resurrecting the long dead; Frankestien's monster is an impossibility.

How Did Augustus Use Wooden Stadiums?
Wooden Stadiums A fire in 31 BC, the first of three, destroyed the wooden structure. It was rebuilt
by Emperor Augustus who also added an imperial box on the Palatine Hill. A large obelisk from
Heliopolis was added to the spina as a decoration. The obelisk can now be found at the center of the
Piazza del Popolo. Another obelisk was added much later, in the fourth century. A second fire, in 64
AD, which started in wooden shops at the bottom around the track started the fire that burned much
of Rome during the reign of Emperor Nero. Architectural design The execution space of the Roman

The defining moments on either end of the spina were normally set apart by funnel shaped shafts,
called the metae (solitary: meta). The execution surface of the carnival was ordinarily encompassed
by rising seating along the length of both straight sides and around the bended end, however there
were here and there interferences in the seating to give access to the bazaar or the seating, or to
accommodate uncommon review stages for dignitaries and authorities. One bazaar, that at
Antinopolis (Egypt), shows a particular hole of somewhere in the range of 50m between the carceres

Ancient Circus Maximus Site Explored

  • 1. Circus Maximus Circus Maximus It is nearly impossible to look at the field that holds the remains of the Circus Maximus and understand what it once held without the aid of a vivid reconstruction. The remains of Circus Maximus lie in the Valley between the Aventine and Palentine hill. Traditionally, the history of the Circus Maximus began with chariot races held in honor of the God Consus in a less permanent structure in the area near Consus's altar. In later years, this lead to the construction of a circus under the first Etruscan king, Tarquinius Priscus around 600 bc. Previous to Tarquin's intervention, an underground stream kept the valley swamp like. Tarquin diverted the water and drained the area and began to hold chariot races in the area. The ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Racers were expected to remain in their chalked lanes until passing a marked break line at which time the charioteers were free to take any position on the track. The jargoning for the ideal location on the track often made racing a dangerous sport. The chariot races traditionally consisted of seven laps about the track counterclockwise. Turning posts dubbed matae consisted of 3 gilded bronze cones set atop a hemispherical shaped block. The races lasted somewhere in the realm between eight and nine minutes and the race length was measured to be near three miles. More often than not, chariots were pulled by four horses. At the beginning of the races, it is suspected that chariots were owned privately and the charioteers hired by the owners. Over time factions, a system of professional chariot racing organizations emerged. The timing of the initial use of factions is expected to have been sometime shortly after the Second Punic War. The factions seem to have emerged over time out of need rather than by a specific mandate. The amount of chariot races and popularity of the sport a public need for organization became apparent. The efficiency offered by factions was a popular solution to the inadequacy of the previous system. The faction owners had teams of workers and all sorts of resources for their athletes. • 3. Ancient Egypt Essay Ancient Egypt is a fascinating ancient civilization. The Egyptian culture was heavily polytheistic with a complex view of the afterlife, which was evident in their architecture and communication. Even today as ancient Egypt melts together with modern Egypt. The pull of their ancient cities is still seen in Cairo and Alexandia. The highly developed belief of polytheism in the Egyptian culture was made up of many gods. This belief is the base to the Egyptian culture and life. In the Egyptian polytheistic culture the gods took on form and characteristics of objects found in nature. The Egyptian god Ra is considered the father of gods and was the most important and worshiped god. When the Egyptians think of the figure that Ra looks like ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... During the fourth dynasty pharaohs were known as "the sons of Ra". Ra was a primary god in the fifth dynasty, which is when he became associated with the king and then the pharaoh. Ra became more and more popular during the new kingdom, which resulted in a sort of monotheism. The Eye of Ra is an Egyptian symbol for protection and the divine royal power. This symbol even appears on the United Sates dollar bill. The eye within the pyramid represents Ra awaiting rebirth. Even though the Eye of Ra is within the pyramid his soul remains alive and watchful as the open eye indicates. Osiris is the Egyptian god of the underworld. Osiris is one of five children born to Geb and Nut; the god of earth and the goddess of the skies. He was also the great grandson of Ra. All of Osiris's siblings played an important role in his story: Seth, his brother and his two sisters Isis and Nepthys. Osiris inherited the throne of Egypt because he was the first born son if Geb and Nut. Though Osiris and Isis were brother and sister they were married and were not destined to be happy. Osiris's other sister, Nephthys, at one point takes on the appearance of Isis and presented herself as Isis. Osiris, not knowing the difference, was seduced by Nephthy; she had Anubis. Seth developed a jealousy toward Osiris either because Osiris had inherited the throne or because he had gotten Nephthy, Seth's wife, pregnant. • 5. Auguste Rodin's Works The Thinker: Auguste Rodin sculpted the Thinker between 1881 and 1919. The original thinker is currently located in Musée Rodin, which is located in Paris, France. The Thinker, originally constructed to represent Dante Degli Alighieri pondering his famous poem, The Divine Comedy, was made to be on top of the compositional piece Rodin created as an entranceway for the Musée des Arts Décoratifs. This piece, known as The Gates of Hell, is based on Dante's 16th century poem, The Divine Comedy. For this reason, the original name of The Thinker was The Poet; however, as the piece began to gain precedence over The Gates of Hell, its name was changed, and today it is commonly recognized as a symbol of philosophy and learning. The Thinker also became known as a symbol of the socialist movement in France during 1906 and onwards, which was a time of political and social turmoil. As a result of The Gates of Hell, Rodin's most famous works would appear to the public. These pieces include The Kiss, The Age of Bronze, The Monument of Balzac, and The Burghers of Calais. The Thinker was created at the front of Impressionist Sculpture; however, Auguste Rodin never showed his work under the title of Impressionism, therefore it is difficult to associate Rodin with this period of art. Mummy In Popular Culture Introduction: Mummies adorn the exhibits of hundreds of American and European museums alike and their presence in popular culture of our society has been a consistent one for over a hundred years. To the men and women of the twenty–first century, the mummy still represents the mysterious and the ancient. And although we are influenced by the images and concepts of the numerous literary works, plays, paintings, and films that depict the mummy in a state of resurrection, for the modern audience the mummy is ultimately an artifact. The hard science of our time has gone beyond the hope of resurrecting the long dead; Frankestien's monster is an impossibility. It is an obelisk by shape, yet not a true obelisk because it is not carved out of a single stone. The monument was built at intervals between 1848 and 1885. It memorializes George Washington's achievements and his devotion to principles and to his country. The Washington Monument has an interesting history. The idea of a monument celebrating George Washington was first considered by the Continental Congress in 1783. However, the next three decades brought neglect by Congress to take action. History of the Obelisk The design of the Washington Monument is a common obelisk and can be found around the world. Its history begins in Egypt. There were a great many obelisks in Egypt, 13 were originally in Karnak where now only 5 stand. Possibly the best known obelisk in Egypt is at the Temple of Luxor in Thebe. This obelisk was raised by Ramses II. He is credited with raising over fourteen obelisks at Tanis alone. The obelisk at the Temple of Luxor was originally one of a pair of obelisks. This missing obelisks was later removed and brought to Paris where it stands in the Place de la Concorde. Many of the obelisks that were originally in Egypt are now in different parts of the world. It appears that these obelisks were the focus of conquerors of Egypt. For example, the Persian leader Cambyses dragged many of these obelisks to the ground and mutilated them. He especially targeted those obelisks which bore the inscriptions of cruel deeds that were performed against the Persians. The destruction of these obelisks by conquerors suggests that these enormous structures represented the power of Egyptian leaders and were very important to the Egyptians. Later conquerors removed many of these obelisks as souvenirs. Two great obelisks, which stood in Egypt for a millennium and a half, were brought to Rome to commemorate Julius Caesar. These became known as Cleopatra's needles. Ironically, one is now in London and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 11. Personal Narrative: My First Vietnam War All of my problems began and ended with a book and a statue. I was currently surrounded by dozens of giant carnivorous lizards. This explanation may be slightly confusing for you, so please allow me to tell my story. I was a 28–year–old professor at Washington State University. I lived in an apartment on the west side of Pullman. I was a bachelor, and I enjoyed the single life. I passed the time by studying ancient statues, figurines, and monsters. I had traveled the globe and met creatures that you could only imagine. I enjoyed teaching students who weren't much younger than I was, and some of them were close friends. One day, a package arrived at my door. I opened it. Inside was a leather–bound book covered in strange symbols. I opened the book, and the every page inside was covered in words written in an odd language. There were images of horrific demons and phantoms shown throughout. I did some research on the book. We went left, through a wall of hedges. This turned out to be the correct choice. I looked up to a gigantic temple. It must have been at least four hundred feet high, with nearly three hundred fifty steps. Afu and I raced up the stairs, but we were both tired by the time we were halfway there. We slowly walked up. We, as humans, have always viewed the past as a valuable asset capable of assisting us towards greater heights. We, therefore, strive to preserve our history in order pass it to the next generation, without alterations. Even though the loud yet peaceful sound of the ocean was almost the only thing I could hear, I heard the soft ¨PIT– PAT¨ of teeny foot steps before they suddenly sped up and went another direction. Then, everything that was happening sunk in, and I opened my eyes to see a beautiful island. I didn't remember where I was, or how I had gotten here, or anything else for that matter. The only thing I could remember was my name. After I opened my eyes, I got up to my feet and realized that I felt this itchy, scratchy feeling on my wrist. I looked down to see some sort of glowing implant in it! I scratched at it a little before I decided it was pointless, and that it was a good idea to get moving. I was thinking about my next move, when I got an empty feeling in my stomach. I needed to find something to eat and find it fast because if I didn't, I'd be stuck without food for the night. Water was another thought that had crossed my mind, along with the possibility of freezing to death over the night. As I was looking for food, I thought of how I could kill three birds with one stone, and an idea came to mind. I quickly ran over to a grove of bushes that were covered in berries. I could eat the berries for my thirst and hunger problems, and then use the fibers from the bushes to mend together some thin clothes. While some may find it hard to clearly pinpoint distinct evidence that the organization still exists today there seems to be numerous pieces of evidence strung amongst our daily lives, which once given a closer look, reveals the illuminati's subconscious infiltration of our minds. Their influence in our daily lives is inarguable, spanning from their use of technological surveillance, to secret meetings which decide the fate of humanity. They have rebranded ourselves far from being the vilified Bavarian organization to a more modern day–elitist group focused on New World Order. The New World Order is the modern–day illuminati's plan at a creation of a totalitarian world shadow government run by the most elite in society a. The onslaught of the cute facial filters has swept society away, with as many users scrambling to get snapchat to send the cute doggy filter to their significant other. However, according to thrillest.com, these are simply deceiving mechanisms used by the illuminati to control people even more. • 21. Social Contract Is The Formidable Obelisk For... Social Contract is the formidable obelisk for peacebuilding and statebuilding. One of the oldest and widely cited Social Contract theories is the one of theorist's John Rawls. His theory proposed an objective perspective of the Social Contract concept that was rooted from medieval Europe, this widely accepted principle that "all men are by nature free and equal" (Lessnoff, 1990, p. 3) made Rawls disparate to his brethren who too theorized this concept. Rawls rendition of the theory was not only non–traditional to the views of his predecessors (i.e. 'Junius Brutus', Thomas Hobbes, Jean– Jacques Rousseau, and John Locke) it also presented principles of social justice, the origin of society, and placed the state's action as a standard which was a stark difference to other political philosophical theories. For the purpose of this proposal, the Rawlsian contract will be applied as the base of my argument; this proposal will begin by defining key terminologies, it will then proceed to detail the origins of the Social Contract, it will analyze popular Social Contract theories, it will interpret shared and competing assumptions, and lastly the evidence that support my main argument that the Social Contract is the foundation of peacebuilding and statebuilding will be scrutinized. In order to ensure that the argument will have its optimal impact, the definitions of key words will be presented in this section. To begin, the definition of Social Contact that will be utilized is that of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 23. Memorialization Of The Great War This thesis has aimed to widen local studies on the memorialisation of the Great War. The study of remembrance is ever expanding, with historians, local researchers and organisations aiming to broaden the spectrum of research on the topic. Historians have researched memorialisation from local to international level and the wide spectrum of studies allows for a better understanding of how people and communities reacted to the Great War. Of the 5,704,416 men mobilised by Britain, around 723,000 died. Since the dead were buried overseas in war cemeteries, it was down to communities throughout Britain to erect war memorials for their fallen. War memorials became focal points of commemorative and anniversary events for the Great War, they were a way in which future generations could pay their respects to the dead and could also show as a reminder the influence that a worldwide war had on a community and country. There are around 38,000 war memorials in Britain, while in the North East of England, the number amounts to around 2,001 , and in Middleton–in–Teesdale there are three dedicated to the Great War. Emerson wrote a "Concord Hymn," a poem which commemorates the Battle of Concord , one of the first battles in the American Revolution. "Concord Hymn" was, sung to the tune of the hymn "Old Hundredth," at the unveiling of the Obelisk, a monument that marks the spot where the battle of Concord took place . The speaker writes the poem to inform the reader about the American Revolution and the place where it all began and to persuade the reader to appreciate the men who fought for freedom. The speaker describes the Battle of Concord through the use of imagery. He describes the impact of the battle by using the point of view of the Americans in the Battle of the Concord. Some scenes are the flag that represented America at the time, the bridge where the battle took place, and the first shot fired. • 27. The Fifth Season Sparknotes Okay, so this is how this is going to work... The deep book review will be split into different sections, one where I will dump a bunch of information about the storyline on the reader, another where I will rant about what makes this book deep but not good, and, finally, another about the author. The footnotes will be my way of interjecting Laszlo–esque commentary on what would normally be a more formal piece of writing without drastically altering the formality of the review. Throughout the book, The Fifth Season changes from Syenite to Damaya to, finally, a character referred to as 'you' (as you might expect, all chapters written from you's perspective are written in second person). As the book moves on, switching from character to character, similarities between Syenite and Damaya start to appear, until, chapter seventeen, when it is revealed Damaya is just a young Syenite. Thus, unfolding historical tangibility and the teachings of the Gospel as a basis for our stand in our faith as a Catholic was the thesis statement of Sir George Weigel in his article. The latter thought was the thesis statement of the article because the weight between the Scavi and the Gospel teachings presented a situation wherein the belief of any individual lies on the answer of each true faith and being a Catholic. In 2015, Weigel stated that archaeology yields probabilities rather than certainties. Now with that in mind, there were different evidences that would support the thesis statement that the author ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Just like the author's thesis statement, we also unfold and unwrap tangible truths and significances of the lessons we learn because we do yearn for answers that will satisfy our curiosity and faith. One example is that when we discussed the Muslims and its beliefs. Honestly, most of us had a hard time learning beliefs of the Muslims because some of those were really peculiar in our point of view. However, we still tried our best to learn so that we would be able to contrast the difference of Muslims from Christianity or other religions for us to gain more knowledge about them. There were also other lessons that challenged our capability to look for tangible evidences, but fortunately we succeeded and learned more truths about certain lessons in Christian ... A brief (not really) rundown of the storyline: This is not how the story progresses chronologically or chapterly, but merely how I decided to organize things based off of how the chapters fit together and what I am choosing to ignore for brevities sake. You/Essun come home to find your youngest son dead, killed by your husband, Jija. You, your son (Uche), and your daughter (Nassun), are all Orogenes, informally and offensively referred to as roggas. Orogenes are people who can control seismic energy to cause an earthquake, as a result, they are feared and often killed as children, which was what happened to Uche. Soon after, following a failed assassination attempt and a fit of rage, you cause an earthquake an ice the town and search ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Who misses what they have never, ever even imagined? That would not be human nature. How fortunate, then, that there are more people in this world than humankind." This quote perfectly creates anticipation and foreshadowing for the later parts in the book, without giving away too much about the narrator or the rest of the story 30% in. Skip to the next chapter with Damaya in it, and you are at the Fulcrum, a place devoted to training Orogenes located near Yumenes, and Damaya finds herself in trouble. After drinking 'juice' that contained alcohol, a Guardian, Galena, confronts Damaya, and, instead of turning her in, warns her that if she is ever caught, she will be killed. Of course, Damaya did not knowingly drink the alcohol, she thought it was juice. Soon after, she gets tripped in the shower and shoes get stolen. After meeting a fellow student named Crack who has faced similar treatment, they come up with a plan, hiding Damaya's shoes in one of her fellow student's trunks, Guardians come in and a fight between Crack and Jasper ensures and both their trunks are searched. Crack is never seen again, but does give a pretty damning speech in front of the class to Damaya. From here on, chapters get increasingly dark. When it comes to the existence of objects that have morphed and changed, in part due to their perception throughout the course of history, it does not take long before one begins to consider objects of exceedingly long, cylindrical, and rounded nature. The reader has but to consider the iconically Ionic columns of the Parthenon, the obelisks of ancient Egypt, or the steles of Persia before realizing the true extent to which such objects have been the focus of ancient, and present, attention. However, before delving further into the content of this essay, it is necessary to consider the historical context. What is the importance of these cylindrical forms? What is their significance? How great is their prevalence? It is possible to argue, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... To visit a place wherein a obelisk stood was to visit the place of God on earth. Such a powerful association foreshadows the great importance of the Phallic form throughout history. However, when considering the Obelisk, it is possible to note that whereas the true Phallic Form is curvaceous and rounded, the Egyptian obelisk is sharp and pointed, less indicative of the Phallus as it is a mere act of defiance to the skies. Herein, then, lies the true point of interest. Did the Egyptians consider the Obelisk a phallus, or merely a directional pointer, indicating, as it were, the source of it's power via a bold gesture towards the heavens? Regardless of the answer to this question, it cannot be denied that, like the phallic form, the Obelisk is long, hard (as they were atypically created with substances other than granite or sandstone), and at least reminiscent of Phalli. Interestingly enough, the Romans fell remarkably in love with the Obelisk, resulting in the creation of at least 400 more Obelisks in Rome itself than in the entirety of Egypt. This is quite relevant considering the historical obsession the ancient Roman Empire had with the literal phallus. One has but to visit the ruins of Pompeii to see that the Romans were no novice to the usage of the phallus as a vehicle for pleasure and escape from the day to day drudgeries. • 71. Ancient Egyptian Art And Art Essay Ancient Egyptian sculpture was influential for the time and as well as today through many methods including various sculpture and pottery ranging from colossal obelisks to tiny pieces of pottery. Egyptian developments in sculpture and pottery show aspects of religion, the spreading of their culture, and advanced design. Egyptian sculptures was influenced by their religion through many methods. One of these methods were the obelisks, there happened to be specific rules for them as they were after all designed for the kings or queens of that time. According to Encyclopedia britannica an obelisk has"All four sides of the obelisk's shaft are embellished with hieroglyphs that characteristically include religious dedications, usually to the sun god, and commemorations of the rulers."–("Obelisk"). The obelisk was one of the main forms that the people connected with their gods and the amazing craftsmanship that went into the design of the statue. Also, as the pharaohs were classified as "gods among men", the sculptures dedicated to them were believed to hold special power towards those pharaohs, especially during the time of the Old Kingdom. "Throughout Egyptian history, the statuary of royals has had a firm funerary grounding. This is definitely true for the Old Kingdom, as it was still strongly believed the statute could hold divine power"–("Royal Statuary through Old and Middle Kingdom Egypt") This also shows the worship around objects being that there was a possibility of ... • 73. Hatshepsut : Major Achievements In Ancient Egypt One of Hatshepsut's major achievements was expanding the trade routes of Ancient Egypt. Most notably was an expedition to the Land of Punt, which became a major trade partner supplying Egypt with gold, resin, wood, ivory, and wild animals. Scholars still debate the exact location of Ancient Punt, but many believe it to be roughly modern–day Somalia to Sudan. Due partially to these new trade networks, her reign was marked by wealth, prosperity, and peace. Hatshepsut sent five massive ships to open trade with Punt; they returned filled with 30 live myrrh trees and other gifts, including frankincense. According to legend, Hatshepsut was the first to turn charred frankincense into eye–liner. Apparently, she knew how to accessorize. Besides trade, Hatshepsut also oversaw an immense period of building across Egypt and may be responsible for hundreds of grand buildings and statues, along with her architect Ineni. Like most pharaohs, she added buildings to the massive temple complex at Karnak, but also restored old temples there and had two obelisks erected there; at the time, they were the tallest in the world. Hatshepsut undertook ambitious building projects, particularly in the area around Thebes. Her greatest achievement was the enormous memorial temple at Deir el–Bahri, considered one of the architectural wonders of ancient Egypt. Another great achievement of her reign was a trading expedition she authorized that brought back vast riches–including ivory, ebony, gold, leopard ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

• 77. How Did Augustus Use Wooden Stadiums? Wooden Stadiums A fire in 31 BC, the first of three, destroyed the wooden structure. It was rebuilt by Emperor Augustus who also added an imperial box on the Palatine Hill. A large obelisk from Heliopolis was added to the spina as a decoration. The obelisk can now be found at the center of the Piazza del Popolo. Another obelisk was added much later, in the fourth century. A second fire, in 64 AD, which started in wooden shops at the bottom around the track started the fire that burned much of Rome during the reign of Emperor Nero. Architectural design The execution space of the Roman circus was typically, notwithstanding its name, an oval rectangle of two direct areas of race track, isolated by a middle strip running along the length ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The defining moments on either end of the spina were normally set apart by funnel shaped shafts, called the metae (solitary: meta). The execution surface of the carnival was ordinarily encompassed by rising seating along the length of both straight sides and around the bended end, however there were here and there interferences in the seating to give access to the bazaar or the seating, or to accommodate uncommon review stages for dignitaries and authorities. One bazaar, that at Antinopolis (Egypt), shows a particular hole of somewhere in the range of 50m between the carceres and the begin of the rising seating where there is evidently no structure. This seems, by all accounts, to be a special case. The considerable larger part of carnivals fit the portrayal above. Those that don't show two unique varieties: that at Emerita Augusta (Mérida, Spain), where the carceres end is substituted by a marginally bended "straight" end joined to the straight sides of climbing seating by adjusted corners of rising seating; and a couple in which the carceres end is substituted by a moment semi–round end to create an oval molded field.
