2. INTRODUCTION
Co-curricular activities form an important part of the educational
programme in the present times. The Mudaliar Commission states, “A
school is not merely a place of formal learning, whose main concerns is to
communicate a prescribed quantum of knowledge, which is primarily
interested in training its pupils in the gracious art of living.”
Above observation clearly explains the function of school asa a centre
of educational growth and excellence. The information gained through such
programmers’ supplements the information gained through the regular
school courses in the class.
Thus we find that co-curricular activities form an integral part of the
shoolprogramme.
PRINCIPLE OF ORGANISING CO-CURRICULAR
ACTIVITIES
 To provide equal opportunity to all the students to take part in such
activities.
 To enrich their interest and understandings of the contributions
made by other streams to the teaching of commerce.
In organizing such activities the following points be kept in mind.
 Such activities should always be executed through the active and
willing co-operation of the student, staff and school management.
 The time spent on such activities should be reasonable.

3. VALUES OF CO-CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES
Co- curricular activities are supplementary and complementary to
curricular activities. Such activities are immense values to students, to
teachers, to schools and to the business community
Some of theses are listed here:
 Helps to develop in students proper individual and collective
responsibilities with desirable qualities of leadership.
 Helps to develop the ability to work with others.
 Helps to develop the leisure time advantageously.
 To create confidence in students to rely on their on capabilities to do
the work
 To foster a spirit of self-reliance in work when they grey old and settle
in different walks of life.
TYPES OF CO-CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES
 Commerce club
Commerce club or association may be started in the school under the
leadership of the commerce teacher. The commerce teacher should take
all possible steps to run the club effectively by gaining adequate support
from the administration, students and community.
The organization of such club will be of immense benefit to all concerned
as:
1. It can act as a valuable link between students and teachers and thus
can contribute to the smooth running of the commerce department.
2. It provides students with useful practical experiences in real life
situations.
3. It fosters cordial relationship among students.

4. 4. It helps to identify talented students and to assign them due
responsibilities.
 Commerce Library
Library has a key role in any shame of education. Classroom teaching
must be supplemented with knowledge gathered by reading library books
and journals. In commerce subjects students are required to ado a lot of
independent works, including practical’s meant for development of skills. In
all these a commerce library can be of immense help. If assignments
including solution to problems are carefully given with planning, work in the
library for their completion will develop not only desirable reading habits
but also their insights
 Commerce room
It is desirable to maintain a commerce room in higher secondary
schools .this room will make the teaching learning process dynamic and
effective. A commerce room should provide bulletin boards, reference table,
magazine racks, individual table and chair for each student , teachers desk
and chairs, standing desk for the teacher, various audio visual aids etc
 Cooperative stores
It is always possible to run a cooperative store in the school under the
guidance of commerce teacher. Such store can act as a laboratory for
commerce students as they can apply most of the principles of commerce
learnt by them in a commerce class. The running of cooperative store
provides the commerce students a practical training in planning orders for
books and stationary, purchasing and selling, maintaining and setting
accounts with persons and different firms. They also get an opportunity to
be trained in various stores activities.
 School Bank

5. It would be desirable if such a bank is run by all the schools imparting
instruction in commerce. The commerce teacher may be asked to give
proper direction and work as director of such a bank. It will help to
familiarize the students about the operations and functioning of a bank. It
also possible to provide training to students in different banking activities
such as; issuing of cheques, clearing of cheques, depositing money in the
bank, filling in pay slips for cash and cheques, marinating and setting
accounts and balacesheet.
 Cottage industries
If possible attempts are made by a commerce teacher to start some cottage
industry in school where willing students may be permitted to work on
remunerative basis. In such an industry opportunities may be provided for
proper training of students to start and manage such units.
 Debates, Discussion and Competitions
The organization of debates, discussions etc., help in improving the
vocal power of the students. It also helps in enriching their ideas. It also
desirable to invite some specialists from different fields in commerce to
preside over such functions.
 School Magazine
Commerce teacher can make a successful use of school magazine for
shaping students, thoughts and for dynamiting student thinking processes.
Commerce teacher should encourage his students to contribute articles in the
school magazines on various economical and commercial topics in which
they are interested and have inclination. The teacher may also train his
students I editing and laying out the magazine.
 Visit and Excursions
For the benefits of commerce students the teacher may arrange for their
visits to:

and to learn the different activities of the bank.
• Important Business Concerns: To provide to students the real
knowledge as to how the business works. During such visit they
may be shown how debit and credit notes are prepared, how invoice
is prepared, the system of filling etc.
• Visit to insurance offices: To provide to students the practical
knowledge of actual working of the insurance company. During
such visits students learn how policies are insured, premium
received, claims settled etc.
Excursion
Excursion and travels provide practical knowledge to the subject. When
students are taken out for travels and excursion, they get an opportunity to
learn things directly. Knowledge so acquired is stable and useful.
Visit to museum it is no exaggeration to say that national museums and
laboratories are excellent centers for giving real knowledge to students in
various areas of learning.
