 All activities concerned with business comes under the
study of commerce.
 i.e. all activities that help the producer of the product
to send his goods in the hands of the customers
through many channels:
 Transportation, Banks, Means of Communication,
Advertisement , Storage, etc
 In short the main purpose of commerce is to remove
all barriers of goods distribution process.

4. Basic concept of commerce
education All types and levels of education for all the business
functions or operations, whether in the public involved
in the mechanical sector or private sector( except
those directly involved in the mechanical extraction or
transformation of materials to products and
maintenance of machines)
 3 levels of Commerce Education :

…..Commerce Education ( semi professional, better
prospects courses)
…..Professional business courses (cost accountancy, CS,
CA) …….CBSE calls it as Business studies and
Accountancy and not Commerce

5. Meaning of Commerce Education
 So,
 According to C.V.Good, “ Business Education is 1. That
area of education which develops skills, attitudes and
understanding essential for the successful direction of
business relationships.
 2. An area of study dealing with the principles and
practices of teaching business subjects”.

6. Definition of Commerce Education
• FRANK HOOPER& JAMES GRAHAM 1901 :
• « a practical education suited to the needs of present day, and calculated to fit young people
intended for business careers for work they will have to perform and to better equip for their work
those already in business.
• 1922, LEVERET LYON
« Any Education which a businessman has and which makes him a better businessman, is for him a
business edn, no matter whether it was obtained in the walls of a school or not »

7. H.G.SHIELDS, 1930
 « Real Commerce Edn is Economic Edn not of
academic sort long on theory short on facts but
Economic Edn which will give the student the
knowledge of basic reality of business life &
relationships. The basic science of business is
commerce and without a thorough guidance and
awareness of the economic problems much of the
material included in secondary school course is purely
additive & superficial

8.  POLICIES COMMISSION ON BUSINESS
 & ECONOMIC EDN STATEMENT,1977
 « Buss. Edn represents a broad and
diverse discipline that is included in all
types of ednal delivery systems-Elementary
& secondary schools, 1&2yr Schools and
colleges, and 5yr colleges& univ. Buss. Edn
can begin at any level, it can be interpreted
for varying periods of time, and it can be
continued throughout life span of an
individual.
Buss. Edn includes edn for office
occupations, buss. teaching,admn, etc

9. So, we can say its characteristics
are
 Regularity in dealing
 Profit making motive
 Dealing in goods and services
 Production, sale and purchase of goods and services.
 Creation of form, place and time utility
 Risk and uncertainty
 Satisfaction of the needs of the customers.
