Hairdressing
Intermediate
Apprenticeship
Level 2
This apprenticeship is designed to meet the needs
of candidates who are starting their career as a salon
junior, initially helping and assisting senior salon staff. This
qualification focuses on the skills needed for the candidate to
be able to carry out tasks in relation to hairdressing and has an
extensive range of units to suit the work environment from health
and safety, advise and consult clients, shampoo and condition hair and
scalp and change colour using basis techniques. You will study hairdressing
topics such as hair and skin testing, the effects of chemicals on hair and skin and
the principles of hair colour selection – there’s also the option to learn about promoting products,
perming or relaxing different types of hair.
This programme is designed to ensure flexibility as it supports a roll on, roll off delivery style where new
apprentices wishing to enrol on to the apprenticeship can join the course every 9 weeks.
Length of Qualification: Between 12-18 months

The Framework Components of the Qualification:
1. Level 2 NVQ Diploma in Hairdressing (delivered through day release to College)
This requires building a portfolio of evidence consisting 54 credits. Day release to college will be weekly
on a Monday.
There is no technical certificate as this knowledge is embedded within the NVQ Diploma.
2. Key Skills or Functional Skills (delivered through day release to College)
• Application of Number at Level 1 (portfolio and multiple choice test) or Functional Maths Level 1
• Communication at Level 1 (portfolio and multiple choice test) or Functional English Level 1
Key skills are incorporated into the apprenticeship to help the candidate develop their transferable
skills. The portfolio is built using relative industry models and situations to confirm their understanding.
Candidates with transferrable skills may be exempt from this, but must provide original certificates to
the assessor to show the level of their attainment.
The candidate will need to have a good level of literacy skills to be able to communicate effectively
within a salon environment, as well as a good level of numeracy skills to ensure that the ratio of colours/
solutions etc are mixed as needed.
3. VTCT Level 2 Award in Employment Awareness in the Hair and Beauty Sector
This is an employment rights and responsibilities award. This focuses on the candidates awareness to
legislations and regulations related to the industry.

4. Personal Learning and Thinking Skills
This element will support the candidates ability to
apply their skills in the workplace as a creative thinker,
develop their team working skills, make independent
enquiries, self manage their workload, participate
effectively and reflective on their journey.

The Apprenticeship Delivery:
The apprenticeship is carried out in the workplace
with a qualified assessor who will help and support the
individual through their qualification, also giving advice
and guidance on techniques. The assessor will visit the
candidate every two to three weeks in the workplace
to guide them through their qualification and assess the
candidate’s competence.
The candidate is required to sit examinations to complete some
components of their apprenticeship. These examinations will be arranged
during their day release to college.
