INTRODUCTION
• (Cha.Sa.Vi.8/183)
• Vaya is the time measurement stages of life
• There are various structural, functional & psychological changes takes place
in different stages of life (age).
• In Ayurvedic classics, total age of a human being is classified acc. to his physical
dynamics i.e, (dhathu pushti sthithi naasam). Of these, Kaumara Bhrithya deals with
first phase of life i.e, the stage of dhathupushti, the basis of which is the maturing
annavaha srothas. So, most number of classification are based on the nature of food
taken by baby.

BAALYAM: Balavastha is the period from birth to 30 years of age. It is further divided
into two
1)APARIPAKWA DHATHU: Stage of immaturity- birth to 16 years of age.
2)VIVARDHAMANA DHATHU: Stage of progressive maturation. 16 to 30
years of age
MADHYAM: 30 to 60 years
JEERNAM: 60 to 100 years
SUSHRUTHACLASSIFICATION
Acharya Sushruta has divided the age is into three Balya,Madhyama,and Vriddha,and has
given singnificant importance to Balyaavastha
(A) Balyaavastha
1 Ksheerapa-birth till 1 year
2 Ksheerannada-1-2 years
3 Annada -2-16 years
(B) Madhyama
1 Vriddhi -17-20years
2Yauvana- 21-30years
3Sampurna-31-40years
4Parihani – 40-70years
(C)Vriddha - above 70 years till death an individual is to be Vriddha

• Kashyapa has classified childhood period intially into three i.e.period of Garbha kala (fetal
life),Bala (childhood),and Kumara (adolescence).after adolescence the age is again divided
three type as Yauvana (youth),Madhyama (middle age) and Vriddha
• Garbha kala (intra uterine period)
• Bala – from birth till1 years (Ksheerapa)
• Kumara – 17-34 years with increase of Dhatu,satva,bala,veerya,

• in Ashtanga Sanghraha and Hridaya classification of Balavastha is similar to that of
Acharya sushruta,albeit slight difference in terminiloggies(Ksheerapa,Annada,and
Ubhaya Vartana)

• In children the status of Dosha,Dhatu,Malas in various diseases are similar to that
of adults but in .Hence the administration of drug also should be proportionately
small,based on body weight ,agni etc.
• By describing treatment aspects ,acharyas mentioned therapies also.
1. To calculate the dose of medicine in children.
2. To assess the developmental condition of child according to milestones.
3.For performing samskaras. For e.g namkaran samskar is done after 1 year
of age.
4. For the purpose of immunization.
5. To assess the various physiological development of baby.
6. Also related with onset time of diseases.e.g neonatal
7. jaundice, dantodbhava janya vyadhi.
7. Related with treatment principles based on shodhana.

INTRODUCTION • (Cha.Sa.Vi.8/183) • Vaya is the time measurement stages of life • There are various structural, functional & psychological changes takes place in different stages of life (age). • In Ayurvedic classics, total age of a human being is classified acc. to his physical dynamics i.e, (dhathu pushti sthithi naasam). Of these, Kaumara Bhrithya deals with first phase of life i.e, the stage of dhathupushti, the basis of which is the maturing annavaha srothas. So, most number of classification are based on the nature of food taken by baby.

It is further divided into two 1)APARIPAKWA DHATHU: Stage of immaturity- birth to 16 years of age. 2)VIVARDHAMANA DHATHU: Stage of progressive maturation. 16 to 30 years of age MADHYAM: 30 to 60 years JEERNAM: 60 to 100 years
