6. Neither of the directors for the films that I have analysed are auteurs. However, there are different types of shots
used in their films that I have also used whilst filming my film. In Takashi Shimizu’s film The Grudge, he uses a
subjective shot for the scene with the old woman and the young nurse. In this scene, the shot starts as a medium
close up. The camera then starts moving around the old woman and the shot then ends up as an over the
shoulder shot and we can see what the old woman is looking at in the corner of the ceiling. For my film, I did a
similar shot to this. My shot started as an over the shoulder tracking shot of my character walking through
through the woods. Some asynchronous sound can be heard whilst he is walking and he stops walking to turn
and see what the sound was. When he turns around, the camera follows this movement and the camera ends up
looking at what the character is looking at. The shot framing and camera movement is similar to that of the ones
Takashi Shimizu uses.
Because neither of the directors are auteurs, I decided to look at the work of a director who is considered an
auteur, David Lynch. On YouTube, I watched a small clip by David Lynch called Fire Walk With Me. In this I saw his
style of editing. His editing style inspired me to edit the clips in my film the same way he did. This included very
quick edits of different types of shots. For example, in the clip of Fire Walk With Me, there was a shot of a woman
laying in bed which lasted for about a second and then it was quickly followed by an extreme close up of a
different woman’s eyes creating confusion but also making the audience scared as to what is going on with all the
fast paced edits and the close ups. I also did this for my film as I included a number of extreme close ups of my
actress’s eyes, then quickly followed it by showing a number of full shots of her standing in the forest from
different angles. All these short shots put together one after another giving the audience an overwhelmed feeling
like there is too much going on and it is scaring them and they are confused.
