5THDAY OF 40 HOURS NLP WORKSHOP @ADARSH AMDAVAD
Neuro-Linguistic Programming is a model about human behavior. It is not a theory because a theory must be proved. On the other hand a model merely has to be tested and if the model yields consistent results; it qualifies as a working model.
Every model is based on pre-suppositions which are assumed to be true. The presuppositions
for any given model are fine tuned till such time that the model yields
consistent results.
1. Everyone lives in and operates from his/her own unique model of the world.
2. People always make the best choices available to them, given their unique model of the world and the situation.
3. There is a desirable solution/possible outcome to every problem.
4. Each person is equipped with everything he/she needs to solve his/her
problems.
5. It is important to separate and distinguish a person from his/her behavior.
When someone is learning something new, it is useful to evaluate the
behaviors while holding constant a positive evaluation of self.
6. All behaviors that people exhibit are motivated by a positive intention or
purpose.

9. Rapport
• Rapport is bonding at an unconscious level. Rapport is the quality of a
relationship of mutual influence and respect between people. A person does
not have rapport until they have built a good relationship with another person.
NLP supplies the skills to build a respectrul and rnulually illfiuefllictl
relctlium:illilJ by e::;lctbli::;hiIlY and building rapport on different
neurological levels.
• Rapport is not manipulation. People who manipulate may look as if they are
building rapport.
• Rapport is not the same as friendship. Rapport is not agreement, nor does it
come from agreement. It is possible to agree with someone and not have
rapport. It is also possible to disagree with someone have rapport.
• Rapport comes from taking second position.
• When we take second position, we are willing to try to understand the other
person from their
• point of view.
• Satisfying relationships are built by rapport, not by just agreement.
rravindrakumar@gmail.com
10. How to build rapport
• By taking genuine interest in another person By being curious about who they are
and how they think By being willing to see the world from their point of view.
• Pacing and leading
• To build rapport, begin by pacing another person. Pacing is when you enter the
other person's model of the world on their terms. It is exactly like walking beside
them at the same pace.
• . Once you have paced a person, build rapport and shown that you understand them,
then you· have a chance to lead them.
• Leading is when you use the influence that you have built up from pacing. Matching
and mirroring You pace and build rapport through 'matching'. Matching is when
you mirror and complement
• an aspect of another person. It is not copying, it is more like a dance. By matching,
you show
rravindrakumar@gmail.com
11. You are willing to enter the other person's model of the world. They will
intuitively perceive this and so you can feel more at ease with them and
they will feel more at ease with you.
• Matching can be done at every neurological level; like Environment, Behavior (Verbal/non
verbal), capabilities, Beliefs/values, Identity,
• Matching Physiology
• Body movements: leg position, arm position, head position, rhythmic tapping of fingers,
hands etc, gestures with hands, arms, head Breathing pattern: speed, depth, iocation Eye
contact Matching Voice tone Speed of speech Volume of speech Tonality of speech Pauses
Matching Language Keywords Phrases and predicates Assignment:
• Watch people while they are with you and mirror their physiology.
• Match their breathing pattern.
• Match their tone of voice like volume, pauses and tonality.
• Mirror some of the words or phrases that they are using.
•
• Exercise: Do Inner Pacing. See, hear, feel, smell and taste what is going in your internal
world. See yourself in some situation and obserVe the change.

12. Anchoring
• Anchoring is a process of learning to hold on to the states that are crucial to
success.
• An anchor is a stimulus: It may be a sound, an image, a touch, a smell, or a taste
that triggers a consistent response in ourselves or someone else.
• The ability to use anchors in NLP enables us to:
• Access the resources (feelings and states) that we want when we want them.
• Replace unwanted feelings and thoughts with desirable ones.
• Gain control over our emotions.
• Keep on course when going through periods of intense change.
• Positively influence the response we trigger in other people.
• Experience the day as we want, no matter what is happening in our life.
rravindrakumar@gmail.com
13. Procedure for anchoring a resourceful
state in yourself
• Choose a place that is free from distraction.
• Decide on a state/a feeling that you have experienced in your life that
you would like to be able to access when you choose.
• Choose an anchor that you can use whenever you want to access this
feeling.
• Now recall the memory of a time when this feeling was at its strongest
for you. Get associated with the experience. Pay attention to what you
see, colors, brightness, notice the quality. What do you hear? Is it loud
or quiet? Location of the sound? Allow yourself to experience the
feelings. When associate completely, set the anchor.
• Repeat this process several times until you know that there is strong
connection between the touch and the feelings.
• Test the anchor.
•
rravindrakumar@gmail.com
14. Key factors in anchoring:
• a. Fully associate with the experience before you set the anchor.
• b. Make the anchored experience intense.
• c. Use a distinct and specific anchor that is easily reproduced.
• d. Set the anchor just prior to reaching the most intense part of the
experience.
•
• Steps for collapsing anchors:
• Decide on an unresourceful state that you want to work with; like
anxiety, stress, lack of
• confidence etc. Associate into this state so that you are experiencing it
and anchor it on one
• elbow. Test the anchor until you know it works.
rravindrakumar@gmail.com
15. Break the state.
• Choose the resourceful state, say confidence, for example. Associate
into a time when you had this feeling. When you experience the
intensity of this feeling, anchor it on the other elbow.
• Test the anchors in the following sequence:
• a. Break state
• b. Fire first anchor
• c. Break state
• d. Fire the second anchor
•
• If either of the anchors fails to work, repeat the sequence of resetting
them. Now fire both the anchors simultaneously. Release the first
anchor and hold the second anchor for next ten seconds.
rravindrakumar@gmail.com
16. Confidence Switch/Anchor
• Here is the wonderful NLP technique to create anchor for peak
performance.
• Remember a time when you felt at the top of world and performed with
your peak. Fully return to it now ... see what you saw, hear what you
heard and feel how good it felt. ... If you cannot remember a time,
imagine how good it would feel if you were very confident and had all
the power and strength and self-belief you could ever need.
• As you keep going through this memory ... make the colors richer and
bolder ... the sounds louder and clearer and the feelings stronger.
• As you feel those feelings increase, squeeze the thumb and middle
finger of right hand together.
• Now really squeeze the thumb and middle finger together and relive
that good feeling.
rravindrakumar@gmail.com
17. Confidence Switch/Anchor
• Repeat steps one to five several times with different memories of your
peak performance until just squeezing your thumb and finger together
brings back those good feelings. (Alternatively, say) ... you will notice
as you touch finger and thumb together that instantly those Confidence
relaxed feelings return now.
• Still holding finger and thumb together, think of a time or situation in
which you used to feel stressed. Now imagine things going perfectly,
going exactly as you want them to and feel how good that feels to be
much calmer and in control of the situation.
• Still holding finger and thumb together, imagine a few challenging
situations occurring and notice yourself handling them all easily and
just in the way, you wanted. Notice how good that feels to be calm and
in control
• . . . Each time you repeat this exercise it will become easier and easier
to experience
• feelings of peak performance 'at your fingertips'

18. Chaining anchors
• We move between different emotional states throughout the day.
Sometimes one anchor will be enough to change our state, but most of
the time anchors work in chains -one leads to another until we find
ourselves in a different state. We need to recognize when these chains
take us into unresourceful states. Then we can stop them from
operating or redesigning them so they lead to a more resourceful
conclusion. We can also design our own chains as pathways towards
the states we want.
• This exercise is best done with another person.
• Ask the person to tell you one of their most common unresourceful
states. Give the state a name (confusion, frustration etc.)
• Next, ask the person to identify the resourceful state that they want to
finish in. check it is realistic and ecological (for expo 'stuck' to
'spiritual ecstasy' is unlikely to work well). Make the final state one
that will be really useful in the context of the unresourceful state (for
example confusion to clarity or concentration).
rravindrakumar@gmail.com
19. Design the pathway.
• What immediate states does the person want to have on his way? Choose one and
three states. The greater the gap emotionally between the initial state and the
desired state, the more intermediate states will be needed. The first state will be
one the person wants to escape. The second may also be mildly unpleasant. Any
other ones should be positive and the last state should be very positive.
• Ask the person to access the first state; calibrate the state and then anchor it
kinesthetically on his hand or arm. Break the state. Check the anchor.
• Repeat the process for each state. Anchor it kinesthetically in a different place on
the same arm. Break the state and check the anchor each time.
• Fire the first anchor. When the person comes to the peak of this state (ask him to
nod his head when it happens), fire the next anchor while continuing to hold the
first.
•
rravindrakumar@gmail.com
20. Design the pathway.
• Hold both the anchors for a moment and then release the first while continuing to
hold the second. Do not fire the next anchor until you see that the physiology of
the second state is well-established.
• Repeat this process for each anchor until you reach the final state. Take away the
final anchor and check the client's physiology to see whether he is in final
resourceful state. Break the state.
• • Repeat the chain three times, getting a little faster each time. Break state
between each complete chain.
• Test. Fire the first anchor for the unresourceful state and watch the client's
physiology move to the resourceful state without further intervention.
• Future pace. Ask the client to think of a time when they are likely to feel the initial
negative emotion in the next few days. They will start to move towards the
resourceful state automatically.
•
rravindrakumar@gmail.com
22. Test.
• Fire the first anchor for the unresourceful state and watch
the client's physiology move to the resourceful state
without further intervention.
• •
• Future pace. Ask the client to think of a time when they are
likely to feel the initial negative emotion in the next few
days. They will start to move towards the resourceful state
automatically.
