1. High tech matt black era
By Ross Kelly
What is High Tech architecture?
High tech architecture arrived in the 1970s. It is a combination of elements from high tech
industry and technology in to one building design. This era helps build a link between
modernism and post modernism however, in the 1980s High tech was much harder to
distinguish from post modern architecture. Typically in high tech architecture the designers have
made sure that the skeletal structure of the buildings are normally visible from the outside.
These structures are normally made up of steel due to its stylistic and atheistic matter.
For example on these two picture you
can clearly see the bodily structure of
buildings
4. Shape of arch from the
bridge too add to make
the chair look more
modern.
I added pillars in the arch to add more
strength and It also fits in with my
inspiration more

Change of design to
make the chair
more ergonomicall
I removed the arch in
the seat to make it
more simple to make in
Pro desktop.
Added more
features from Renzo
Pianos work
I designed the legs of the chair like
this because It suits the Era that I
have chosen. Also it gives the chair
a modern look.
5. First model
This is my first model. Overall I am not happy with
this model because it does not represent my
design era, due to the sides being the wrong
shape. Also I found that the ergonomics of my
chair could be improved
However I am pleased with the
dimensions of my chair. Prior to
the fact that there is not a large
gap between the seat and the
back of my chair
6. Second model
For my second model I thought about how I can make the
chair look more organic. So I decided to change the back
component. As you can see I made the corners curved on
both sides. Also this improves the ergonomics of the chair by
reducing the amount of sharp edges to make the chair more
comfortable for the user
However I feel that the seat
component is too long. This could
make the chair uncomfortable for
some users depending on their
height.
7. Third model
In this model I changed the design of my side
component to make my chair link back to Renzo
pianos bridge. Also I had to change the dimensions of
my seat to make the whole concept look more like a
chair. My final change was to make the gap of my back
component further away from the gap of the seat
component for a more comfortable fit to minimise any
problems whilst assembling my chair
However one down side of
this model was that the sides
looked very plain with out any
detailing. Also it was a very
basic shape. I found the
shapes were not very organic
8. Fourth model
In this model I decided to add a bit of
detailing in to the side to represent Renzo
Piano’s work. As you can see both sides link
back to the bridge that he designed. This
makes the chair look more unique and
more eye catching
However I think I could put
some more detailing in to the
back component of the chair
and maybe adjust the shape
of the side to save more
material.
9. Fifth model
I decided to add more detail in to back
component of the chair to link back to the
design era I have chosen. Because in the Matt
Black era lots of the structures have their
structure visible from the outside. Also it gives
the chair a more modern look.
However I realised a default in my
design. I figured out that if the
bottom on the side piece is flat
then there is a possibility of the
chair rocking if there is any object
underneath it.
10. Sixth model
Due to me realising a fault in my side component I
chose to arc the bottom of the side piece so the
chair now have four separate legs to stand on. This
improves the looks of the chair and the overall
strength of the chair. I also changed the shape of
the corners to create a more organic shape and
save more material. I feel that this gave the chair a
more smooth and modern look.
However I realised that the gaps of
the fitting was too big. Which then
resulted in lots of movement in the
chair. So for my Final model I will
make those gaps smaller to make the
chair more secure and more stable to
improve the overall feel of the chair.
11. Final model I am very pleased with the overall look of my final model. I
am proud with my colour choice because it makes the
chair look more modern and I also feel that it suits my
design era. I am happy the overall strength of my chair and
all of the components fit well together with very little
movement. I feel that my chair links back to Renzo Pianos
work in many areas especially the side and back of my
chair.
However one area I am not happy with is that I
realised I do not have a place for the user to rest
their arms due to the side of the chair being to
high. So this is could make the ergonomics of the
chair not very good. Also I feel that the bars in the
front and the back of the side were possibly un-
needed. Also they do not look very good either.
13. Evaluation of project
Overall I am happy with my progress in this project because I have managed to make
substantial changes to my chair on every different model, Also I have kept good time
management and complete 7 models in the time given. I am very happy with the final
outcome due to the look and feel of my chair, Also I have managed to show my link to Renzo
Pianos work in my chair, therefore I have stuck to success criteria. I feel I have learnt a lot
about Pro desktop in this short amount of time and I feel much more comfortable with using
it.
