The Smoky Great Mountains
3. Part I: This week you learned a little bit about several of the major movements in American literature.
Which of these movements do you see reflected in the novel you are reading? Do you see influence of
more than one? Give specific cited examples that point to these movements. Part II: Now, it s time for a
little research on your part. Find an article about a historical event occurring within the ten years prior
to your novel s publication. Please cite this article in your post and provide a link, if appropriate.
Discuss how this event impacted the work you are reading. The effect may be subtle. For instance,
there may be no mention of war, and yet you may recognize possible effects of war within the
characters. NOTE: The novel that was chosen for me is The Prophet of the Great Smoky Mountains by
Mary Noailles Murfree must be 250 + words combined between part 1 & 2

Wind from an enmy sky revised
Mc Nickle builds toward a suspenseful conclusion in the book Wind from an Enemy Sky through a
series of ironic events that readers know about, but all the novel s characters don t discover until the
novel s final pages. Although Doc Edwards and Toby Rafferty try to talk Adam Pell out of his plans for
giving the Virgin of the Andes to the Little Elk people, why are they unsuccessful? What is the result of
Pell going through with his plans to give this gift, and how might Two Sleeps have prevented this from
happening if he had revealed his dream to the people? In the Afterword to the novel, Louis Owens
finds no hope in the novel s conclusion. Other literary critics, however, have interpreted some hope for
the Little Elk people despite the novel s dramatic and violent conclusion. What is your interpretation of
the conclusion? Do you agree with Owens, or do you believe there might be some hope for the Little
Elk people to enter a new era beyond the close of this story? What evidence does McNickle include for
the possibility of hope beyond the novel s final page? Explain your opinion, and use brief quotations
with pages numbers cited. It has to be at least 125 words.

Poems Analysis
In your Unit 5 readings you had the opportunity to read several poems from the Misty poets, Latin
poets, and America poets. For this discussion you will discuss each poem by three different poets. This
discussion is not an essay, a summary, or abstract. This is meant to be a deep analysis on the poets
using the Poetic Analysis Handout as a guide to interpretation. I also want you to compare and contrast
the poets that you choose, but only after you have finished your analysis. For example, you could
analyze figurative language (metaphor, simile, etc), stanza length, enjambment, rhythm and rhyme,
alliteration, etc.
