A jolly phonics lesson plan letter sound a
1. A JOLLY PHONICS LESSON PLAN LETTER SOUND A
This lesson is focused on the letter sound “a” whose movement is wiggle fingers above
elbow as if ants crawling on you, saying a, a, a.
I will cover the 5 core skills that have been covered over last the jolly phonics
course.
1. INTRODUCTION (A short story)
Once upon a time, on a sunny Sunday morning, Timmy and his friend Amy went to have a
picnic. Once they arrived to a wonderful place in the countryside, they sat down and started
to taking out from their bags all kind of food: some bread, some apples, bananas, some
cheese, a delicious potatoes omelette and some ham and tomatoes.
But, suddenly, some ants were crawling through Timmy´s arms (movement: wiggle fingers
above elbow as if ants crawling on you, saying a, a, a) and he started to shout and running
very quickly everywhere as a mad.
2. LETTER FORMATION. BLENDING
In order to develop their fine and gross motor skills children can use different objects
such as: buttons in different color to create the letters. Once children
recognise the sound “a” they can read a whole word by means of
blending. For instance the word: a – n – t = ant (first they read sound
by sound and then they put them together).
Other activities could be: snap, flashcard games, cup games with letter
sounds, using clay to fill up the letter sounds and so on….
3. IDENTIFYING THE SOUND OR SEGMENTING
This skill helps children with their handwriting and spelling skills. It is the opposite to
blending. For instance, in the word ant, first they havet o recognise the initial letter, then
identify the sound: is there any “a” in “ant”? and finally count out the sounds in “ant”.
4. TRICKY WORDS
In this case, with the sound letter “a” it is not applicable. This letter is not included in
the tricky words in the jolly phonics programme.
5. EXTENSION ACTIVITY TO REINFORCE THE LETTER SOUND “A”
An extension activity to practice the letter sound “a” and ohter sounds
is to play with a dice they have to do. They will have to throw it and
they will say the sound of the picture.
