The Impact that the Protestant Faith Has on Society in the...
The American education system is a prime example of an institution that has been formed around
the exclusionary principles of American society and as a result the education system, which has
become the preferred means of climbing the socioeconomic latter, is also an institution that works to
indirectly keep poor minorities in their hierarchical place. Schools that were meant to be public
facilities of education continue to be funded under the assumption that these institutions are
necessary and inclusive. Although public schools are necessary, they are far from inclusive, in fact
the best schools can be defined as sects. Max Weber wrote about the exclusive characteristics,
benefits, and consequences of sects in terms of religious groups, ... Show more content on

Plant High School uses its designated district as a way to insure that it only accepts those who are
socially and "morally qualified", and to ensure that those who attend Plant High School would "have
qualities of a certain kind" and that "these qualities were ... bred in him" (Weber, 1920/2011, p.224).
Although, it is not specified what qualities are being sought after by Plant High School, it can be
easily inferred that the qualities include that prospective members come from a prominent family,
affluent family, and a white family, this can be seen simply by watching the video "About Plant
High" on the schools web page. More empirically, it can be inferred by examining Plant High
Schools accountability report found on the Florida's Department of Education's webpage which
reported that 68.8% of those attended Plant in 2013 are "white", to the mere 7.3% who are classified
as "Black or African American". In addition, there was only a population of 16.1% of attendants that
were "economically disadvantaged". The commonly accepted justification for the composition of

Animal Cruelty: The Humane Society Of The United States
"Animals are reliable, many full of love, true in their affections, predictable in their actions, grateful
and loyal. Difficult standards for people to live up to," said Alfred A. Montapert, the author of The
Supreme Philosophy Of Man. Many animals who have given people their love have been cast off or
mistreated. The Humane Society Of The United States(HSUS) has made it their mission since 1954
to prevent this cruelty before it happens. The four founders of HSUS Helen Jones, Larry Andrews,
Marcia Glaser, and Fred Meyers, all believed in this mission. I believe that the Humane Society Of
The United States has a worthwhile and honorable mission. It is one of the best. Not only does it
save thousands of animal lives each year it also works with law enforcement to investigate illegal
animal cruelty. HSUS has more than 10 million members and uses its money wisely. If you donate
just $19 a month to HSUS you will be doing a grand service and you will join the revolution to stop
animal cruelty before it happens. You will be a part of preventing some of the ... Show more content

About seventy nine percent of families around the world have an animal that they love and share
their life with. Most families have either a dog or a cat. These pets are loyal, kind, and loving. We
bring them into our homes and take care of them. There are some animals who aren't fortunate
enough to have a family to love and take care of them. These animals are abused and mistreated
every day. The Humane Society Of The United States has made it their job to protect these animals
and prevent this cruelty before it happens. They spend eighty percent of all of their donations on
protecting these poor animals. I believe that these animals deserve a chance to escape these horrible
circumstances and find a family who will love and care for them. If you donate you will be a part of
these animals lives. You will be giving them a chance to be happy in life. You will be part of helping

Impact of Mexican immigrants to the United States society
Americans are celebrating their identity and heritage as well–known nation for immigrants
especially the Mexicans. There is a solid base of help for preceded with migration as a vital element
for economic growth and as a key component of a cosmopolitan culture among numerous
Americans. Around 60 million individuals, more than one–fifth of the total populace of the United

Utilizing visas known as green cards, lawful perpetual occupants are ready to live and work in the

The second course is through transitory work or tourism visas or through here and now visas for

Japan and the United States: Different but Alike!
Japan and the United States:Different but Alike!
The culture of a place is an integral part of its society whether that place is a remote Indian village in
Brazil or a highly industrialized city in Western Europe. The culture of Japan fascinates people in
the United States because, at first glance, it seems so different. Everything that characterizes the
United States––newness, racial heterogeneity, vast territory, informality, and an ethic of
individualism–– is absent in Japan. There, one finds an ancient and homogeneous society, an ethic
that emphasizes the importance of groups, and a tradition of formal behavior governing every aspect
of daily living, from drinking tea to saying hello. On the surface at least, U.S. and Japanese ... Show

Society Struggles In The United States
Society is a ferocious circle that continues to spin out of control. During one's existence the speed in
which society spins is self–inflicted and continues to surge. No matter where one exists within
societies circle, one must realize they influence the vicious tug–of–war between supply and demand
cycles. Greedy Americans cause issues for manufactures, big business, and the environment.
Manufactures struggle with meeting government demands while maximizing production output.
After all, consumer products generate mass revenue for business and the government. Society
neglects to consider the environment as long as manufactures continues to provide. This type of
behavior represents a win for consumers and Uncle Sam. Manufacturing businesses ... Show more

By doing so, big brother indirectly forces U.S. manufactures and jobs overseas. President Clinton
made this crystal clear in his first term. He signed the North American Free Trade Agreement
(NAFTA) into law. His bright idea did not produce early warnings of failure. It was not actually
noticeable until the economy fell out from underneath the United States in 2008. Both President
George W. Bush and Obama during their state of the union speeches indirectly addressed the
NAFTA downfall. They both expressed concern that America needed to bring manufacturing back
home. Additionally, start using our own natural resources and stop being dependent on other
countries. Some manufacturing has returned to the United States. GE is a testament to this. Wal–
Mart promised additional U.S. Made products on their shelves. The government still remains a thorn
in manufacturing operations. Ironic the government is of the people, by the people, for the people.
Organized corruption best describes the government. The government's responsibility to consumers
and manufactures is quite simple. Establish specific laws for manufactures to operate under and
protect the consumer from waste generated during manufacturing as outlined in Environmental
Protection Agency. When lawmakers arrive on Capitol Hill they quickly forget who sent them.
Elected officials continue to perform unethical deals. Countless bills passed

Chicano society in the United States is still having some issues regarding acculturation and racism.
It has been a conflict between Mexican–American and Anglo–American, each fighting to keep their

Also, the racism against Mexican was and still is a problem, although not as harsh as before.
Chicanos are fighting to keep their traditions and history alive. Racism has been fought by several
court cases in which Mexicans have won, all of them involving racism. As the Lemon Grove case

In the capitalist–driven society of the United States, there is a constant impetus towards expansion,
investment, and maximization of profits. While this system has helped the US become one of the
wealthiest countries in the world it has also contributed to a widening gap between the wealthiest
and poorest members of society. This essay will examine two of the poorest populations in the
United States, the Central Appalachian region of Kentucky and the population in Camden, New
Jersey through the lens of two 20/20 segments reported by Diane Sawyer: "Waiting on the World to
Change" and "A Hidden America: Children of the Mountains". This essay will examine the interplay
between economic life and family structure in these regions, and how this interplay shapes
individual behavior. In the early 20th century, both the Appalachian region and Camden were
financially prosperous. Large–scale logging and coal mining firms brought wage–paying jobs and
modern amenities to Appalachia and Camden served as a major center for manufacturing and
industry. Following World War II, the coal mining industry experienced major decline. Mechanical
innovations that reduced the number of laborers needed, competition from cheaper fuels, and fewer
accessible and profitable seams contributed to a major decline in the coal industry. The decline of
this industry, once the major source of jobs and economic activity in the region, led to a spike in

Prohibition and United States Society in 1920's Essay
Prohibition and United States Society in 1920's
Prohibition was the legal ban on the manufacture and sale of alcohol. It was introduced in 1919 and
was viewed as the answer to many of America's problems.
It was thought that the end of alcohol in America would spark a new and greater society in America.
People believed that it would reduce crime, drunkenness, violence and that it would reduce families
in poverty because the men would not go out spending all the money on 'alcohol.'
With much pressure from groups such as the, 'Anti Saloon League,' and the 'Women's Christian's
Temperance Union. These two groups both helped convince congress to pass the 18th amendment,
prohibition.

Plus bootleg alcoholic beverages like beer and whisky were created, the whole drinking scene was
slowly starting to look like its former self. The most confusing statistic is that before prohibition
there were less speakeasies then there were during prohibition. So therefore the introduction of
prohibition had actually increased America's alcohol intake rate.
When Prohibition started it opened up an opportunity for local gangsters to make some money and
then expand their business and many of them took this opportunity. Probably the most famous of all
the gangsters was called Al Capone. He was the leader of a huge organisation and he saw the
business opportunities for himself to restore alcohol in America.
The first thing that Capone did was to start importing alcohol from Canada. He would then sell it on
to some dealers for a fee.
When Al Capone started to help supply these speakeasies with alcohol the police started to
investigate his transactions to try and catch him. He then proceeded to discover that many policemen
who investigated him drank in speakeasies and so he offered them small lump sums to continually
report back with nothing, this is how his business thrived.
Another way that Capone and his goons made money was to go through a process of 'racketeering.'
This was a process where people who represented

MI intended to become legally bound with the recipients. However, it is not MI's intention to

then past consideration is valid, as per Re Casey's Patents, applied in Pao On v Yiu Long. Nicole is
not likely to succeed in receiving the 10% discount. She failed to meet the condition clearly stated in
the advertisement: '...attach it to the email you send with your order'. Nowhere does it say the

The Society Of The United States
Some social behaviors are so ingrained in people's day to day lives that they would never notice
them unless they were pointed out. One such behavior that is so often overlooked is the preferential
treatment that certain groups receive over others. The privileges of the dominate social groups over
the subordinate ones go so unnoticed at times that they are even seen as just innately how things
should be. In the contemporary society of the United States, the group with these privileges is often
White males, and the majority of them would disagree about that statement. Surprisingly, the group
that gets the most treatment feels the most abused. This only highlights the obliviousness
accompanying those to which this invisible power belongs. However, each person, at one point, has
been advantaged over another without realizing it.
I have experienced many freedoms throughout my life that others around me have not. For instance,
as a young, White female, I can walk up to almost any stranger of any age without them being
suspicious or afraid of me. A Black man isn't able to say that. This difference has nothing to do with
who I am as a person, but rather how society perceives I will behave based on how I look. I have
walked through department stores with a bag and my hands in my pockets, and I have never been
searched or suspected of stealing once. No one has ever crossed to the other side of the street
because I was in their path, or locked their doors as I walked past their car.

Evaluating Credibility And Its Impact On The Society Of...
Introduction
When a person reads a source for information the reader wants that information to be reliable so
they could trust the source meaning the reader needs their information source to be credible.
Credibility is important because everyone on the planet could write on a topic, but that does not
mean that what they wrote is true and should be believed in. People who write more often than not
have an agenda. To make the reader feel a certain way or to make them believe in what the author
told them too. Evaluating credibility means looking into the author and their agenda, the publisher to
see where the information comes from, evidence of bias, uses of sources to support their
information, verifiability to see if it still holds context, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Objective Summaries & Source Credibility Analysis
The article "Rehabilitate or punish?" written by Etienne Benson on apa.org–the website of the
American Psychological Association–provides insight on the topic of the concept of rehabilitating
prisoners especially the mentally ill or to continue following the "get tough on crime" method. The
article also factors in how psychology can better help even non–mentally ill prisoners to better be
able to transition into citizen life without re–imprisonment than go hard core on the prisoners to
prove a point. Rating the article while evaluating on a six–point scale. I gave the article a score of ().
In the category of author, I give the article a five since he has a proficient writing experience, but not
particularly in the field of psychology. He is a historian in the field of science, technology, and the
environment (). For the publisher, I give the score of six because the source is an educational
professional site in the field of psychology which is what the article is about. In the evidence of bias
category, I give the article a three. The author has a strong preference to giving the prisoners the
mental help they need instead of just punishing them. Going on to explain why he believes that
people should help them, but not really going into the other side of the argument. For the use of
sources, I give

several of their fundamental values are still demonstrated by Americans today. Many individuals

Puritans exhorted poverty. In his article, "Our Inner Puritans" (2012). Matthew W. Huston elaborates
America's influence on our modern economy and morality where he states that, "'In America the
ideal is the guy who came from nothing,' Says Eric Luis Uhlmann, the researcher whose work
formed the backbone of this article. 'But in a lot of other parts of the world the new rich are actually
seen as inferior. Meaning that it's not just about having money, it's about having this aristocratic
pedigree.'" His purpose is to dispel examples in order to value Puritanism's roots that carry within us
economically, and many of human's actions are based within Puritanism roots.
It is often asked by many to what extent will the puritan influence fade away or endure from the
American culture as time passes. However, it is safe to say that after 395 years later, America 's
culture is greatly influenced by Puritanism and will remain for many more years. In his article The
New York Times, "Still Puritan After All These Years" (2012). Matthew Hutson introduces his
argument that Americans cultures are influenced more than ever despite claims to the contrary and
that it is time to reconsider why America has a higher tendency to base our opinions on religion
more than any other countries. Hutson develops his argument by stating how, "Typically countries

Western Societies: Individualism In The United States
As I think about the conversation that I believe was among the most intriguing in the recent past, my
roommate got me wondering about one major characteristic of Western Societies – individualism.
According to the Oxford Dictionary, the term "individualism" means "the habit or principle of being
independent and self–reliant" or "self–centered feeling or conduct". Some people often use the term
when they are asked to define an American and when I asked my roommate a personal question
about her decision, I felt that her reaction might have reflected the feature as well. Interacting with
fellow peers at the University has contributed towards increasing my curiosity about why
individualism been prevalent in the West since times immemorial, and ... Show more content on

Parents in a collectivist society would probably be inclined to give orders with no room for
discussion to ensure harmony and obedience. On the contrary, parents in Western countries tend to
provide choices to their children and facilitate decision–making. "Choices serve to define, express,
and reify the distinct individual. Parents organize meals and family activities around children's
imputed preferences." (Markus & Schwartz, 2010) At a tender age, youngsters experience freedom
and are asked about what they would prefer to do, giving them a certain level of delegated authority
to control the outcome of the situation. According to Waterman (as cited in Kapoor, Hughes,
Baldwin, & Blue, 2003), "an individualist tends to hold moral principles that are universal and
behave in accordance with what she or he perceives is right." Therefore, analysing the right decision
becomes a practice by the time one grows up, and an individual perhaps becomes accustomed to
controlling the outcomes of their choices and knowing what they want without relying on any other
perspective to guide them in the matter. Depending on varying circumstances, this may serve as a
positive as well as a negative purpose in one's lifespan. Moreover, the high complexity of western
culture may also attribute to an individualistic society. Social stratification could promote
competitiveness and a mentality were

The United States Is A Capitalist Society
The United States is a capitalist society; money is powerful. The wealthy and those in power are
able to influence tax policy. There are a few tax policies that have more of a benefit to the wealthy
than to the poor. A few of them include the mortgage interest deduction, the yacht tax deduction,
rental property, business meal deduction, capital gains tax rate, estate tax, social security, and
savings for retirement plans.
The most beneficial of these tax policies is the capital gains preferential tax rate. When comparing
the ordinary income marginal tax rates to the capital gains tax rate, the highest ordinary income tax
bracket has a 39.6% rate, while the long–term capital gains tax rate only goes up to 20%. Even with
the attachment of the social security surtax imposed by the Affordable Care Act of 3.8%, the highest
long–term capital gain rate will be 23.8%, which remains lower than the ordinary income tax rate.
Even with the long–term capital gains tax rate applies to investment dividends and capital gains,
which are activities mainly practiced by those with the monetary means to do so. A large percentage
of the very wealthy generate income from investments rather than wages, and thus their income is
taxed at a lower rate. The top 1% holds approximately 50% of American investment in stock and
mutual funds, and the bottom 90% holds approximately 9% of the national wealth in stocks and
mutual funds. "...the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office, or CBO, estimates that the

Is The United States A Wasteful Society?
"Does the U.S. have a chance of reducing the amount of waste in the world today?"
For my sustainability project, my goal was to gather information on how to reduce waste in the
environment in order to prevent the United States from being a wasteful society in the future. First, I
began to recycle everything I used, such as plastic bags, plastic bottles, plastic cups, plastic forks,
plastic spoons, aluminum cans, candy wrappers, and even all types of papers. As a result, I noticed
the amount of trash I had (that was not recyclable, such as unfinished foods and food scraps) was a
lot lighter and I did not have to keep taking the trash bag to the dumpster once a week. To conclude,
I recycled for a total of 3 months, starting in the month of September in the year of 2016 to the
month of November in the same year. I did this experiment to test my goal on how to reduce waste. I
chose to do my sustainability project on ways to reduce the amount of waste in the world today
because I learned from reading Garbology: Our Dirty Love Affair with Trash by Edward Humes,
that the United States is filled with trash and many times people do not realize the consequences of
trash and how it's polluting the environment. As a result, I decided to do my project on reducing the
amount of waste in the world today. I am curious if people actually start recycling and reusing their
waste that is unintentionally being thrown in the trash, does the United States have a chance of
reducing all this waste?

Rhetorical Analysis Of The Humane Society Of The United...
The Humane Society of the United States, HSUS, has released many commercials to show the
terrible conditions that some animals are subject to live in. These commercials also promote the
need for people to adopt from shelters, and give these animals a second chance at a better life. This
commercial in particular shows singer, and 3rd place contestant on "The Voice", Christina Grimmie,
playing the piano, and singing her version of Bonnie Tyler's "Holding Out for a Hero". As she sings,
many pictures and videos of animals being rescued from their terrible conditions play on a screen
behind her. This commercial definitely pulls on the heart strings of animal–lovers by using the
rhetoric devices of ethos, pathos, and logos in a very subtle, yet precise way. The first use of rhetoric
that is seen is at the start of the commercial. The commercial opens by simply showing the symbol
for the Humane Society of the United States, which is the shape of the United States made up of
animals. It then shows the animals being rescued by the teams of people that work for the HSUS.
Every worker is wearing a shirt with the HSUS logo on it. Opening up with their symbol, and
showing the pictures and videos of the recues with workers wearing HSUS attire establishes their
good use of ethos. When a person watches this commercial, they see that the Humane Society of the

The United States Is A Divided Society
The United States is a divided society. We like to categorize ourselves according to political
affiliation, race, and religion. We are members of the middle, low–income, or wealthy classes. We
choose what seats to sit in during a football game according to the team we are rooting for. It is
oddly comforting to know that you belong. All too often, however, transgender youth are denied that
sense of ubelonging because they defy society's categories of male and female. The gender binary
divides society into two separate, unequivocal categories that marginalizes transgender youth and
directly impacts their emotional health and well–being. Society's collective response of demeaning,
shaming, and violence further increases the divide. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Social norms in the United States reflect a gender binary, hence there are cultural expectations for
women and a different set for men. Nurturing, aggressive, reckless, polite, flirtatious, strong,
independent could describe either a male or a female, but we subconsciously associate these traits as
either feminine or masculine because our culture has reinforced that notion. The gender based
expectations are taught and the sometimes subtle, often overt lessons begin at a very young age. It
starts with the color of the blanket a baby is wrapped up in, the toys bought for them to play with,
and extends to the pretend play they engage in. So from the earliest ages of social awareness, society
reinforces the ideals of masculine and feminine throughout life. Consequently, it is perfectly
acceptable for a girl to put on a purple tutu and twirl about granting wishes to her stuffed animals,
while it would be discouraged for a boy. He should be outside in the sandbox setting up his toy
soldiers in a mock battle. In spite of the entrenched idea of gender, some mothers and fathers aspire
to a more gender–neutral parenting style, that doesn't restrict their child to specific societal ideals.
However, the pressure to conform to the gender binary is ever–present and difficult to deconstruct.

The Great Society: The End Of Poverty In The United States
The 1960s were a time of change. The Vietnam war just erupted, the youth were rejecting the ideas
of the elders, and jobs started to disappear with the advancements of technology. All these changes
lead many Americans to fall into poverty. This then caused Lyndon B. Johnson to "declare war on
poverty" and enact many welfare programs to raise the county out of poverty. These programs
became known as "The Great Society". The Great Society programs contributed to the creation of
welfare programs and improve this country by fighting poverty, improving education, making

Prior to 1964, segregation was legal. There were signs that would indicate what bathroom a person
could use, sit on the bus, or even where they could eat. Often times, the things provide for the "non–

restraints, bus seats, public areas, and even in jobs. This segregation allowed poverty to grow
exponentially in minority groups. The Civil Rights Act of 1964 changed that. It made segregation
illegal everywhere and in every situation ("Lyndon Johnson's 'Great Society.'"). By having equal
equipment and equal opportunities, the minority groups raised out of poverty because there were
more opportunities available. Voting also plays an important part in ending poverty. The Voting
Rights Act of 1965 helped end segregation, and the war on poverty by allowing the minority groups
to vote, without interference, on the political figure that would best help them. In fact, voting
participation by minorities in Mississippi went from 6% before The Voting Rights Act of 1965 to
59% after (History.com Staff). The sudden influx of votes allowed the voices of those minority
groups be heard. By abolishing segregation, More people had better chances at success, and a

paid athletes in the world. However, the lack of education required by the professional organizations
to participate in such high grossing and high paying fields is shocking. Completion of a college
degree is not required, and players make a minimum salary of $500,000, which is $100,000 more
than the president of the United States. What's all the more interesting in my opinion are the
demographics of the players within these leagues. Surveys depict that approximately 73% of players
in the National Football League (NFL) are Black or ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
However, polls also show that since 1996, people have become less willing to pay higher taxes in an
effort to support urban schools, despite having acknowledged that lack of financial support is the
biggest issue facing urban schools (Bushaw 10). Many feel that the implementation of Common
Core Standards will drastically alter the quality of education being received by urban youth.
Common Core is a program that established a nationwide curriculum and standard for educating the
nation's students grades Kindergarten through 12. Theoretically, this program will work and help
advance education on a national scale. However, like the people of the United States, it's schools are
very eclectic, and must cater to a diverse group of students. The practices of a teacher in a successful
Virginia school will likely not be as effective for a teacher in Detroit considering the vast differences
in those school district's financial support, regulation on class size, disciplinary measures, and
parental involvement. Ultimately, Common Core standards are going to help some places, and may
hurt others, which will only widen the education and achievement gap in the nation. Unique
environmental aspects of education must be considered before the enforcement of such standards.
As unique environmental aspects of education are considered, common aspects of urban living must
be considered as they have a major impact on the

Obesity : A Major Problem Today Society Within The United...
Obesity is a major problem in today's society within the United States. To be more specific,
childhood obesity. Childhood obesity is becoming worse, and the adults don't realize the impact it
has on the rest of the child 's life. According to Americas Let's Move initiative the definition of
Obesity is, "excess body fat. Because body fat is difficult to measure directly, obesity is often
measured by body mass index (BMI), a common scientific way to screen for whether a person is
underweight, normal weight, overweight, or obese ( Obama). According to Jean Cowie, "obesity is
caused by an imbalance in equilibrium between energy intake and energy expenditure" (Cowie).

The complications can range from heart disease, type 2 diabetes, asthma, high cholesterol levels,
high blood pressure, and even sleep apnea. These health complications lead to many social
complications. Social complications that can be linked to things such as bullying. According to
Americas Let's Move initiative, "overweight and obese children can often be targets of early social
discrimination". "Numerous studies have documented harmful weight–based stereotypes that
overweight and obese individuals are lazy, weak–willed, unsuccessful, unintelligent, lack self–
discipline, have poor willpower, and are noncompliant with weight–loss treatment (Obama). This
being stated allows for psychological stress in an individual which can also lead to lower self–
esteem. With lower self–esteem comes self–image problems. Self–image is becoming a major
problem in today's society because of the pressure that is put on both males and females to look a
certain way in order to be portrayed as "beautiful". At this point in the obese stage, it can cause the
child to begin to go into a depressed state. Depression can have lifelong circumstances such as poor
health, poor living conditions, no motivation, and with these individuals tend to become obese.
Along with depression, there are many other lifelong complications that can evolve from being
obese from a young age. Self–image is a huge problem in obese children and can make an

Free Masonry: Secret Societies In The United States
Free Masons Research Essay
Shhh! It is a secret! There are many secret societies in the United States and in the world, more than
one can imagine. Free Masonry is one the largest secret groups that exists, reported by an England
website (Godden, "A Shadowy World Who are the Freemasons, what are their beliefs and how can
you join a Masonic Lodge? Everything you need to know"). This quote supports that the Free
Masons are a well–known secret organization. The Free Masons have millions of members located
throughout the world and is one of the oldest organizations of its kind. Free Masonry has been under
suspicion, and many people question why the organization is as secretive as it is; by dissecting Free
Masonry, one discovers what they are, their ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It consists of traditions and customs that have continued to be passed down since the fraternity
started in the 1700s. One online source states, an element of Free Masonry heritage is that the
principles have tended to be liberal and democratic (Columbia Electronic Encyclopedia, 6th
Edition). An illustration of this would be the founding fathers of the United States of America,
which is a democratic country. The "Founding Fathers" of America have been known for laying
down the stones of America's foundation and being corner stones of America. The term "corner
stones" is used in describing them because the original English and Scottish founders of Free
Masonry were actual stone masons and cathedral builders (Freemasons). These founders of Free
Masonry began in 1717, when the English Grand lodged was formed. Thus, creating the well–
known Free Masons, which has spread far beyond the original perimeters of England and Scotland
(Freemasons). Another component of Free Masonry history is politics. Politics and Free Masonry
have been correlated in the past, with Presidents and at one point a predominate part of the US
Congress were Masons. Around the world and throughout history Free Masons have been included
in and have had members in places of authority in government, hierarchy etc.; Kings of England and
Presidents of the United States of America. Since this is the case, one could suggest that the
organization and structure of Free Masonry contributes to the character of the masons who are in
these hierarchy positions in their professional

How Did The Civil War Change American Society
From the Civil War to the Great Depression, American society underwent many changes, including,
political and social, but mostly democratic changes. During the time between the Civil War and the
Great Depression, the United States became a more democratic society because of societal and
technological advancements that changed the American way of life. In this paper, a democratic
society will be defined as a society with a governmental system that involves the participation of its
citizens to help effectively rule a nation that makes decisions through its elected officials. Before the
Civil War, only had a handful of individuals participated in the democratic system of the United
States, but by the Great Depression, many individuals participated in politics and influencing
society. During the Civil War, the United States was separated by differing viewpoints. The
democratic system during this time lacked the participation of black slaves in the political system,
indicating that America could improve its democratic system in the 1860s. Abraham Lincoln worked
diligently to abolish slavery and develop systems to help recently freed slaves establish themselves
within society. James McPherson ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

The differing political agendas of the North and the South led to the reconstruction of opposing
political parties, which are essential to a democratic society. They provide multiple opinions, which

Having A Multicultural Society In The United States
The United States is currently a country that is fairly diverse. In the near future the U.S. is projected
to have no racial or ethnic group as it majority. As a result of this change our country would
officially be a multicultural society. This change would bring some challenges as well as some
advantages for some people. One disadvantage of having a multicultural society is the religious
differences. There are many different religions in the U.S. as it is today. If other races and cultures
were added to the country then naturally alongside them they will bring different beliefs. These
different beliefs can cause conflict between the citizens. Also some religions believe that you can do
whatever you want as long as you ask for forgiveness later

The United States As A Multiracial Society
Our ancestors dreamed of a better future and they migrated to fulfill those dreams. Back then it was
a common practice because so much land was uncolonized or it was not claimed by a certain
kingdom. Today, people have those same dreams, but their only way to fulfill those dreams is known
as The United States of America. The United States is rapidly becoming a multiracial society,
because of dramatic cultural changes such as jobs, immigration, and discrimination are affected.
The United States provides people with jobs and opportunities that they could not even dream of
accomplishing in their home country. As an immediate effect of this, many Americans are denied
jobs or are underqualified, due to the fact that employers do not want to discriminate against
different races. According to an International Business Times article 51 percent of Americans
believe they are competing for jobs with immigrants (www.ibtimes.com). However, the Brookings
Institution's wrote that on average, immigrant workers increase the opportunities and incomes of
Americans (www.ibtimes.com) This is because immigration helps the economy by adding young
workers to the workforce. Many Americans fail to realize that the majority of immigrant workers are
willing to take any kind of job that provides income for their families. They usually are not looking
for high paying jobs that require much education. On the other hand, there is an increasing
percentage of Asian immigrants who seek an American education

What Is The United States An Anti-Drug Society?
In sociology, the definition of a drug is "any chemical substance that has a direct affect on the user's
physical, psychological, and/or intellectual functioning" ("Drugs" 3). According to this definition,
many people may argue that the United States is a pro–drug society because of its legalization of
alcohol, tobacco, and pharmaceuticals, however I believe that the United States is an anti–drug
society. Although the United States has legalized tobacco, alcohol, and pharmaceuticals, there are
many drugs that are still illegal. It can be assume that these illegal drugs they are dangerous and

more than anything else. According to the film, "A Marijuana

An American Utopia
The United States is currently polarized between political ideals and social differences. However,
the one topic that everyone can agree on is the pursuit of an American utopia. An American utopia is
imagined as a perfect society with no corruption, perfect harmony between civilians, and freedom of
all types for American citizens. Even though the United States is closer to a utopian society than any
other nation in the world, there are still plenty of inhibitors preventing a true utopia. Of these
inhibitors, the two primary roadblocks restricting the United States from becoming a utopia are
political extremism and censorship of speech.
Political extremism is a massive roadblock from allowing the United States to become a utopia due
to radical ideologies that lead to violence. On the extreme left side of the political spectrum is the
group called Antifa, which stands for Anti–Fascist. They believe and claim to be against all forms of
political fascism (however they do not exemplify this ideal) and free–market capitalism. Martin
Kaste and Kirk Siegler (2017) of NPR quote a witness, "'That night we went to downtown Portland
to see what everything was like, and we got stuck on the bridge because [the Antifa were] stopping
all traffic, hitting cars, jumping on cars, asking people, 'Who did you vote for?'" (Kaste, Siegler,
2017, n.p.). The witness, quoted by Kaste and Siegler, inadvertently became part of an Antifa

Economic Consequences Of The Vietnam War
Economic Effects of the Vietnam War
A common modern belief is that war leads to a positive outcome within the United States economy.
Despite this, the Vietnam War had a negative impact on the United States economy. The United
States experienced an increase in the national debt as a result of the Vietnam War. This led to
significant inflation in the United States. Inflation in the US caused by the Vietnam War then led to
an increase in federal taxes in the United States. Therefore, the Vietnam War had many negative
economic consequences for the United States including an increase in national debt, inflation, and
federal taxes.
The United States experienced an increase in the national debt as a result of the Vietnam War.
According to TreasuryDirect, when the Vietnam War officially started in 1955, the national debt of
the United States was $274 billion. When the Vietnam War officially ended in 1975, the national
debt of the United States was $533 billion. So, the national debt of the United States was $15 billion
shy of doubling over the Vietnam War's course of 20 years. Specialist in Defense Policy and
Budgets Stephen Daggett, says that the United States spent about $168 billion just in military aid on
the war. Charles Hirschman, Samuel Preston, and Vu Manh Loi, authors of Vietnamese Casualties
during the American War: A New Estimate, claims that 1.1 million Vietnamese and Vietcong
fighters had been killed during the Vietnam War. So, the United States spent approximately

Police Influence On Society : The United States
Police Influence on Society The United States is one of the most civilized and structured countries
in the World. Since the early settlers came to the new country and established settlements there has
been a need for law enforcement. As most of the settlers immigrated from English colonies it is no
surprise that law enforcement in the new world was modeled from English culture however, no
matter if its United States or England government is the foundation of law enforcement. As such,
policing in this country was created and controlled by the ruling classes. In this paper the
relationship between law enforcement and ethnic groups will be explored. [It wasn't until the 1800s
that there were police agencies that even faintly resembled the agencies that we have today. They
were modeled after Sir Robert Peel's London Metropolitan Police. As in England, the population of
Colonial America began to grow and immigrant groups began to arrive from various countries
(Archbold, 2012). Some of the earliest immigrant groups were from Italy, Germany, Ireland, and
some of the Scandinavian countries (Archbold, 2012). As the population increased so did social
disorder, new racial and ethnic groups were often seen as the source of the unrest (Archbold, 2012).
In the southern states Slave Patrols were formed to manage and maintain control over slave
populations (Archbold, 2012). These patrols were known to be brutal and cruel in their methods of
control, they continued their work until

The United States Of American Society
"To everything there is a season. Yes. A time to break down, and a time to build up" (Bradbury 165).
It is time to rebuild. Before we were selected for the job of rebuilding American society, we were all
born in raised in the Capitalist society of the long–gone United States of America. Therefore, we, as
the council, tend to be biased toward the Capitalist form of society. The other type of government
that is a possibility for a model for our new society is communism. We knew that in Capitalism,
people tend to have more freedoms, for instance, in the economy. Freedoms mean people are happy
and less likely to rebel. Additionally, a Capitalist society normally has elected leaders. Most
capitalistic countries tend to have democratic ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The lowest class is below the poverty line, and therefore do not have enough money to support
themselves. In addition, economic crash can lead to a depression, and in turn, a recession. These
social divisions come from selfish mentalities, which are typical in Capitalism. They also make it
difficult to achieve a common goal among Capitalist societies to provide well for yourself and your
family, or as it once was known, the "American Dream." In Capitalist countries, on average the top
1% of people hold almost half of the total wealth of the whole country. There are times in history
when one company or person creates a monopoly, the control of a supply or trade of a commodity or
a service. On the contrary, Communism is based off Karl Marx's ideology of equality and
anarchism. Everything is held in common in the theory of Communism, so there are no social
divisions or inequality, so people tend to stay happy. Due to all the sharing and equality, people in a
Communist society tend to be more generous. On the other hand, there are many negative effects
that come from Communism. First, according to Marxism, there is supposed to be a time of control
by a dictator that should gradually fade away. Unfortunately, it is a human tendency to be selfish,
and the dictator normally keeps his power, as seen with the USSR and Cuba. Due to the equality of
distribution, some people have no impetus to work because of the guarantee of equal money for all.

Obesity Is Common All Over The United States Society Today
There are a variety of public issues in the United States society today. Many people are facing some
type of illness or disease, one we do not consider a major problem until just recently. Obesity is a
disease/condition that many people in America are suffering from. Really obesity can be defined in
many different ways; Mayo Clinic defines obesity as a "complex disorder involving an excessive
amount of body fat" (Obesity, 2015). When a person is diagnosed having this disease/condition it
can cause many health problems such as, diabetes, heart trouble, high and low blood pressure.

Adding, many factors have been shown that Obesity should be taken more seriously then what many
people consider. Factors of a person becoming obese can be all of the following, community and
environment, drugs, lack of exercise, unhealthy diet, lack of sleep, bad habits (smoking and
drinking), genetics, social and economic issues, and one of the most important is they way a person's
family lives. Obesity can happen so quickly in young children if their family does not do anything to
make sure their children are getting enough exercise and good nutrition. First, community and the
environment play a role in exercise. A way a person can help prevent becoming overweight, if living
on a farm or in a neighborhood. Gather friends, family, or even pets and take them for a walk, ride a
bike, run, and some if close enough may walk to work. It is very important to make sure
environments are created to make it simpler and easier to participate in physical exercise and
maintaining a healthy diet. Next, drugs can have impact on your body weight. Many may not realize
how much drugs can have an effect on our bodies and health in general. The pharmacist that I work

The Dystopian Society Of The United States
In what country does the most democratic society exist? In today's world, the United States is the
well–known example. The democracy in the United States makes it possible to secure one's
economic freedom without government interruption, alternatively termed capitalism. In modern
world, the contemporary take on capitalism is consumerism. Ironically, given that capitalism is part
of democracy, it is not equally distributed. The presence of social class separates one consumer from
another and restricts one's ability to purchase his or her want. Even with this constraint,
consumerism is widely practiced right in democracy. Although the consequences of practicing
consumerism are not apparent to everyone, Aldous Huxley discloses the detrimental impact of
consumerism in society. He depicts two fictional societies in his works: the dystopian society of the
World State in the Brave New World and the utopian society of Pala in Island. In both works,
Huxley warns the readers about the influence of consumerism by illustrating its usage in
manipulating individual thoughts in the World State and its function in bringing materialism to Pala.
In Brave New World, the World State exhorts consumerism in order to maintain the society stable.
and Island, Huxley draws comparisons between the two Utopian societies, Pala and the World State,
and the real world. These comparisons are exhibited through explanations of each society's
characters. All the characters except the protagonist Bernard

News On Foreign News And Its Impact On Society 's View On...
Thinking of a question related to news was difficult because I am a journalism major and news is a
hot topic within my major. "News" is a very broad statement and can mean many different things. It
also brings all kinds of questions to mind. Originally I went with a broad question that later turned
into a very specific topic making the research much easier. My first question was, "How does news
based in the United States effect societies views on other countries? How does foreign news affect
their societies' view on the United States?" By trying to find simple research on this through the MU
Library, I was quick to find that in order to write a successful research paper it is vital to have a
more specific question to get the answers you want. I was not finding specific research that included
specific information on foreign news and its societal affects.
After some struggles, one article popped out to me about news on foreign countries and their
economy so I decided to look at how the positive and negative news written about a foreign country
later effects that economy. My question then became, "How does an article written in a specific
country affect the economy of a foreign nation?" For example, if a news program based in the
United States were to write an article about China, how would that article truly affect the economy
of China. It has been seen that news can change the perspective of the way people see the world and
all that goes on among the economic leaders. By

The Civil Law System : The United States Of The American...
Introduction
The history of police has been an important part of the American society for a long time.
Throughout the course of history, American policing has been the biggest impact of how the law that
all citizen follows. They have been using the format from an early English society where the citizens
were both responsible for their action they take upon the law enforcement and in the early stages of
expansion in their communities. Policing has been changed rapidly over the years. The United States
of America is built from the U.S. Constitution Bill of Rights, where these right implies to everyone
that is a citizen in America. The police play a major role in making sure that all people gets their
rights no matter where they from, their religion and the color of their skin per the First Amendment.
The Criminal Law system has changed as time has change for the better.
Let's introduce you the main person that had made the policing a wide know achievement for their
communities, that would be because of Sir Robert Peel, a British Home Secretary, who had created a
3,000–strong police force to help fight against crimes. Peel has brought together and guided his
officers through Parliament Act for the improvement that they made in their communities and near
the metropolis areas, which is better known as the Metropolitan Police Act that occur in 1829. This
act has created the first police to be established in London (Siegel 2016). This great accomplished of

impacts that poverty is having on our society. From social conditions, social problems to social

Housing must be made affordable for all and everyone must have access to affordable healthcare

chance to succeed and ensure human dignity in which every American deserves. These steps would

The Effects Of Fracking On The United States And Its...
Introduction With the proliferation of fracking in the United States and its impact on so many
different aspects of society from environmental to health and economic impact, it is an important
topic that demands more research and along with more community awareness. Another aspect of
fracking that is discussed much less than the environmental and public health aspects is that the
people that benefit most from the fracking industry usually white affluent individuals do not live in
the area that drilling process or waste disposal process happens (Johnston, J. j., Werder, E., &
Sebastian, D. (2016). It is also important to keep in mind how the elites of society are able to mold
and manipulate public opinion to suit their needs (Davis, C., & Fisk, J. M. (2014). It has been shown
how persistent opinions from elites and media messages can sway public opinion in whichever
direction they choose (Davis, C., & Fisk, J. M. (2014). This paper demonstrates how the fracking
industry not only poisons the environment it poisons communities through creating conflict and
negative public health issues.
Methods In their research review Charles Davis and Jonathan Fisk (2014) set out to examine public
attitudes about the fracking industry, they based their findings on analysis of survey data of 2400
American adults. In their paper Shale Gas Wastewater Management Under Uncertainty Xiaodong

To What Extent Did Joseph Mccarthy And His Anti- Communist...
The purpose of this investigation is to examine the question "To what extent did Joseph McCarthy
and his anti– communist tactics have an impact on United States society?" I will cover how things in
the society has changed. McCarthyism also affected domestic and foreign policies, but I am going to
focus on American society. I will focus mainly the years around the McCarthy era which is 1950
through 1954. To help examine my topic, I will be using two books. The books are "Defining
moments: McCarthyism and the Communist Threat" and "Joe McCarthy and McCarthyism: The
hate that haunts America" The two sources will be valuable because they give a deep understanding
of what happened during the years 1950 through 1954. This books is one of Omnigraphics
"Defining Moments" books. Kevin Hillstrom, the author, has written many other books, including
books about history. This also shows this source is valuable because Omnigraphics has a lot of other
Defining Moment books that are about history.
The first source, "Defining moments: McCarthyism and the communist Threat," by Kevin Hillstrom,
is a secondary source and was published in 2011. Books Kevin Hillstrom wrote and edited has
received awards. He not only wrote books about history, he also covered topics about environmental
issues and culture. Although the book itself is a secondary source, it contains primary sources. There
are also biographies people wrote about Joseph McCarthy and other who were associated with

The Impact That The Protestant Faith Has On Society In The...

  • 1. The Impact that the Protestant Faith Has on Society in the... The American education system is a prime example of an institution that has been formed around the exclusionary principles of American society and as a result the education system, which has become the preferred means of climbing the socioeconomic latter, is also an institution that works to indirectly keep poor minorities in their hierarchical place. Schools that were meant to be public facilities of education continue to be funded under the assumption that these institutions are necessary and inclusive. Although public schools are necessary, they are far from inclusive, in fact the best schools can be defined as sects. Max Weber wrote about the exclusive characteristics, benefits, and consequences of sects in terms of religious groups, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Although, it is not specified what qualities are being sought after by Plant High School, it can be easily inferred that the qualities include that prospective members come from a prominent family, affluent family, and a white family, this can be seen simply by watching the video "About Plant High" on the schools web page. More empirically, it can be inferred by examining Plant High Schools accountability report found on the Florida's Department of Education's webpage which reported that 68.8% of those attended Plant in 2013 are "white", to the mere 7.3% who are classified as "Black or African American". In addition, there was only a population of 16.1% of attendants that were "economically disadvantaged". The commonly accepted justification for the composition of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Difficult standards for people to live up to," said Alfred A. Montapert, the author of The Supreme Philosophy Of Man. Many animals who have given people their love have been cast off or mistreated. The Humane Society Of The United States(HSUS) has made it their mission since 1954 to prevent this cruelty before it happens. The four founders of HSUS Helen Jones, Larry Andrews, Marcia Glaser, and Fred Meyers, all believed in this mission. I believe that the Humane Society Of The United States has a worthwhile and honorable mission. It is one of the best. Not only does it save thousands of animal lives each year it also works with law enforcement to investigate illegal animal cruelty. HSUS has more than 10 million members and uses its money wisely. These animals are abused and mistreated every day. The Humane Society Of The United States has made it their job to protect these animals and prevent this cruelty before it happens. The culture of a place is an integral part of its society whether that place is a remote Indian village in Brazil or a highly industrialized city in Western Europe. The culture of Japan fascinates people in the United States because, at first glance, it seems so different. Everything that characterizes the United States––newness, racial heterogeneity, vast territory, informality, and an ethic of individualism–– is absent in Japan. During one's existence the speed in which society spins is self–inflicted and continues to surge. No matter where one exists within societies circle, one must realize they influence the vicious tug–of–war between supply and demand cycles. Greedy Americans cause issues for manufactures, big business, and the environment. Manufactures struggle with meeting government demands while maximizing production output. After all, consumer products generate mass revenue for business and the government. Society neglects to consider the environment as long as manufactures continues to provide. By doing so, big brother indirectly forces U.S. manufactures and jobs overseas. President Clinton made this crystal clear in his first term. He signed the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) into law. His bright idea did not produce early warnings of failure. It was not actually noticeable until the economy fell out from underneath the United States in 2008. Both President George W. Bush and Obama during their state of the union speeches indirectly addressed the NAFTA downfall. They both expressed concern that America needed to bring manufacturing back home. Additionally, start using our own natural resources and stop being dependent on other countries. Some manufacturing has returned to the United States. GE is a testament to this. • 13. The Capitalist Driven Society Of The United States Kelly Mulquin Dr. Pratt Intro to Sociology 11/12/2014 In the capitalist–driven society of the United States, there is a constant impetus towards expansion, investment, and maximization of profits. While this system has helped the US become one of the wealthiest countries in the world it has also contributed to a widening gap between the wealthiest and poorest members of society. This essay will examine two of the poorest populations in the United States, the Central Appalachian region of Kentucky and the population in Camden, New Jersey through the lens of two 20/20 segments reported by Diane Sawyer: "Waiting on the World to Change" and "A Hidden America: Children of the Mountains". This essay will examine the interplay between economic life and family structure in these regions, and how this interplay shapes individual behavior. In the early 20th century, both the Appalachian region and Camden were financially prosperous. Large–scale logging and coal mining firms brought wage–paying jobs and modern amenities to Appalachia and Camden served as a major center for manufacturing and industry. Following World War II, the coal mining industry experienced major decline. Mechanical innovations that reduced the number of laborers needed, competition from cheaper fuels, and fewer accessible and profitable seams contributed to a major decline in the coal industry. The decline of this industry, once the major source of jobs and economic activity in the region, led to a spike in ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

It was introduced in 1919 and was viewed as the answer to many of America's problems. It was thought that the end of alcohol in America would spark a new and greater society in America. People believed that it would reduce crime, drunkenness, violence and that it would reduce families in poverty because the men would not go out spending all the money on 'alcohol.' These two groups both helped convince congress to pass the 18th amendment, prohibition. For a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Plus bootleg alcoholic beverages like beer and whisky were created, the whole drinking scene was slowly starting to look like its former self. The most confusing statistic is that before prohibition there were less speakeasies then there were during prohibition. So therefore the introduction of prohibition had actually increased America's alcohol intake rate. When Prohibition started it opened up an opportunity for local gangsters to make some money and then expand their business and many of them took this opportunity. Probably the most famous of all the gangsters was called Al Capone. He was the leader of a huge organisation and he saw the business opportunities for himself to restore alcohol in America. The first thing that Capone did was to start importing alcohol from Canada. He would then sell it on to some dealers for a fee. When Al Capone started to help supply these speakeasies with alcohol the police started to investigate his transactions to try and catch him. He then proceeded to discover that many policemen who investigated him drank in speakeasies and so he offered them small lump sums to continually report back with nothing, this is how his business thrived. Another way that Capone and his goons made money was to go through a process of 'racketeering.' This was a process where people who represented

Thus, obligating her to pay the additional £2 and not able to receive a refund. The second issue, is she entitled to the 10% discount as per the advertisement? It is helpful to understand if the advertisement was an offer or an invitation to treat. For it to be an offer, it must be shown that MI intended to become legally bound with the recipients. Nevertheless, since Nicole already had a pre–existing contractual obligation with MI for the other three goods, then past consideration is valid, as per Re Casey's Patents, applied in Pao On v Yiu Long. Nicole is not likely to succeed in receiving the 10% discount. She failed to meet the condition clearly stated in the advertisement: '...attach it to the email you send with your order'. Although MI did not receive the voucher at all, she could refer to Household Fire Insurance Co. v Grant that stated if the postal acceptance is properly addressed and posted, the postal rule can apply even if it never reaches its destination. • 20. The Society Of The United States Some social behaviors are so ingrained in people's day to day lives that they would never notice them unless they were pointed out. One such behavior that is so often overlooked is the preferential treatment that certain groups receive over others. The privileges of the dominate social groups over the subordinate ones go so unnoticed at times that they are even seen as just innately how things should be. In the contemporary society of the United States, the group with these privileges is often White males, and the majority of them would disagree about that statement. Surprisingly, the group that gets the most treatment feels the most abused. This only highlights the obliviousness accompanying those to which this invisible power belongs. However, each person, at one point, has been advantaged over another without realizing it. I have experienced many freedoms throughout my life that others around me have not. For instance, as a young, White female, I can walk up to almost any stranger of any age without them being suspicious or afraid of me. A Black man isn't able to say that. This difference has nothing to do with who I am as a person, but rather how society perceives I will behave based on how I look. I have walked through department stores with a bag and my hands in my pockets, and I have never been searched or suspected of stealing once. No one has ever crossed to the other side of the street because I was in their path, or locked their doors as I walked past their car. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Introduction When a person reads a source for information the reader wants that information to be reliable so they could trust the source meaning the reader needs their information source to be credible. Credibility is important because everyone on the planet could write on a topic, but that does not mean that what they wrote is true and should be believed in. People who write more often than not have an agenda. To make the reader feel a certain way or to make them believe in what the author told them too. Evaluating credibility means looking into the author and their agenda, the publisher to see where the information comes from, evidence of bias, uses of sources to support their information, verifiability to see if it still holds context, ... Objective Summaries & Source Credibility Analysis The article "Rehabilitate or punish?" written by Etienne Benson on apa.org–the website of the American Psychological Association–provides insight on the topic of the concept of rehabilitating prisoners especially the mentally ill or to continue following the "get tough on crime" method. The article also factors in how psychology can better help even non–mentally ill prisoners to better be able to transition into citizen life without re–imprisonment than go hard core on the prisoners to prove a point. Rating the article while evaluating on a six–point scale. I gave the article a score of (). In the category of author, I give the article a five since he has a proficient writing experience, but not particularly in the field of psychology. He is a historian in the field of science, technology, and the environment (). For the publisher, I give the score of six because the source is an educational professional site in the field of psychology which is what the article is about. In the evidence of bias category, I give the article a three. The author has a strong preference to giving the prisoners the mental help they need instead of just punishing them. The first of which will kill and steal land, and the second that would attempt to use the bible to deceive, these came to be known as Puritans.American Puritanism emerged from a desire for reform in the Church of England. Even though Puritan society was largely unsuccessful in meeting their expectations, several of their fundamental values are still demonstrated by Americans today. In his article The New York Times, "Still Puritan After All These Years" (2012). • 26. Western Societies: Individualism In The United States As I think about the conversation that I believe was among the most intriguing in the recent past, my roommate got me wondering about one major characteristic of Western Societies – individualism. According to the Oxford Dictionary, the term "individualism" means "the habit or principle of being independent and self–reliant" or "self–centered feeling or conduct". Some people often use the term when they are asked to define an American and when I asked my roommate a personal question about her decision, I felt that her reaction might have reflected the feature as well. On the contrary, parents in Western countries tend to provide choices to their children and facilitate decision–making. "Choices serve to define, express, and reify the distinct individual. Parents organize meals and family activities around children's imputed preferences." (Markus & Schwartz, 2010) At a tender age, youngsters experience freedom and are asked about what they would prefer to do, giving them a certain level of delegated authority to control the outcome of the situation. According to Waterman (as cited in Kapoor, Hughes, Baldwin, & Blue, 2003), "an individualist tends to hold moral principles that are universal and behave in accordance with what she or he perceives is right." Therefore, analysing the right decision becomes a practice by the time one grows up, and an individual perhaps becomes accustomed to controlling the outcomes of their choices and knowing what they want without relying on any other perspective to guide them in the matter. Depending on varying circumstances, this may serve as a positive as well as a negative purpose in one's lifespan. There are a few tax policies that have more of a benefit to the wealthy than to the poor. A few of them include the mortgage interest deduction, the yacht tax deduction, rental property, business meal deduction, capital gains tax rate, estate tax, social security, and savings for retirement plans. The most beneficial of these tax policies is the capital gains preferential tax rate. When comparing the ordinary income marginal tax rates to the capital gains tax rate, the highest ordinary income tax bracket has a 39.6% rate, while the long–term capital gains tax rate only goes up to 20%. Even with the attachment of the social security surtax imposed by the Affordable Care Act of 3.8%, the highest long–term capital gain rate will be 23.8%, which remains lower than the ordinary income tax rate. Even with the long–term capital gains tax rate applies to investment dividends and capital gains, which are activities mainly practiced by those with the monetary means to do so. A large percentage of the very wealthy generate income from investments rather than wages, and thus their income is taxed at a lower rate. The top 1% holds approximately 50% of American investment in stock and mutual funds, and the bottom 90% holds approximately 9% of the national wealth in stocks and mutual funds. • 30. Is The United States A Wasteful Society? "Does the U.S. have a chance of reducing the amount of waste in the world today?" For my sustainability project, my goal was to gather information on how to reduce waste in the environment in order to prevent the United States from being a wasteful society in the future. First, I began to recycle everything I used, such as plastic bags, plastic bottles, plastic cups, plastic forks, plastic spoons, aluminum cans, candy wrappers, and even all types of papers. As a result, I noticed the amount of trash I had (that was not recyclable, such as unfinished foods and food scraps) was a lot lighter and I did not have to keep taking the trash bag to the dumpster once a week. To conclude, I recycled for a total of 3 months, starting in the month of September in the year of 2016 to the month of November in the same year. I did this experiment to test my goal on how to reduce waste. I chose to do my sustainability project on ways to reduce the amount of waste in the world today because I learned from reading Garbology: Our Dirty Love Affair with Trash by Edward Humes, that the United States is filled with trash and many times people do not realize the consequences of trash and how it's polluting the environment. As a result, I decided to do my project on reducing the amount of waste in the world today. I am curious if people actually start recycling and reusing their waste that is unintentionally being thrown in the trash, does the United States have a chance of reducing all this waste? ... • 36. Rhetorical Analysis Of The Humane Society Of The United... The Humane Society of the United States, HSUS, has released many commercials to show the terrible conditions that some animals are subject to live in. These commercials also promote the need for people to adopt from shelters, and give these animals a second chance at a better life. This commercial in particular shows singer, and 3rd place contestant on "The Voice", Christina Grimmie, playing the piano, and singing her version of Bonnie Tyler's "Holding Out for a Hero". As she sings, many pictures and videos of animals being rescued from their terrible conditions play on a screen behind her. This commercial definitely pulls on the heart strings of animal–lovers by using the rhetoric devices of ethos, pathos, and logos in a very subtle, yet precise way. The first use of rhetoric that is seen is at the start of the commercial. The commercial opens by simply showing the symbol for the Humane Society of the United States, which is the shape of the United States made up of animals. It then shows the animals being rescued by the teams of people that work for the HSUS. Every worker is wearing a shirt with the HSUS logo on it. Opening up with their symbol, and showing the pictures and videos of the recues with workers wearing HSUS attire establishes their good use of ethos. When a person watches this commercial, they see that the Humane Society of the United States is an organization that is built around the belief that animals want, and need to be cared for and loved. • 38. The United States Is A Divided Society The United States is a divided society. We like to categorize ourselves according to political affiliation, race, and religion. We are members of the middle, low–income, or wealthy classes. We choose what seats to sit in during a football game according to the team we are rooting for. It is oddly comforting to know that you belong. All too often, however, transgender youth are denied that sense of ubelonging because they defy society's categories of male and female. The gender binary divides society into two separate, unequivocal categories that marginalizes transgender youth and directly impacts their emotional health and well–being. Society's collective response of demeaning, shaming, and violence further increases the divide. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Social norms in the United States reflect a gender binary, hence there are cultural expectations for women and a different set for men. Nurturing, aggressive, reckless, polite, flirtatious, strong, independent could describe either a male or a female, but we subconsciously associate these traits as either feminine or masculine because our culture has reinforced that notion. The gender based expectations are taught and the sometimes subtle, often overt lessons begin at a very young age. It starts with the color of the blanket a baby is wrapped up in, the toys bought for them to play with, and extends to the pretend play they engage in. So from the earliest ages of social awareness, society reinforces the ideals of masculine and feminine throughout life. Consequently, it is perfectly acceptable for a girl to put on a purple tutu and twirl about granting wishes to her stuffed animals, while it would be discouraged for a boy. He should be outside in the sandbox setting up his toy soldiers in a mock battle. In spite of the entrenched idea of gender, some mothers and fathers aspire to a more gender–neutral parenting style, that doesn't restrict their child to specific societal ideals. However, the pressure to conform to the gender binary is ever–present and difficult to deconstruct. The Vietnam war just erupted, the youth were rejecting the ideas of the elders, and jobs started to disappear with the advancements of technology. All these changes lead many Americans to fall into poverty. This then caused Lyndon B. Johnson to "declare war on poverty" and enact many welfare programs to raise the county out of poverty. These programs became known as "The Great Society". This segregation allowed poverty to grow exponentially in minority groups. The Civil Rights Act of 1964 changed that. It made segregation illegal everywhere and in every situation ("Lyndon Johnson's 'Great Society.'"). By having equal equipment and equal opportunities, the minority groups raised out of poverty because there were more opportunities available. Voting also plays an important part in ending poverty. The Voting Rights Act of 1965 helped end segregation, and the war on poverty by allowing the minority groups to vote, without interference, on the political figure that would best help them. In fact, voting participation by minorities in Mississippi went from 6% before The Voting Rights Act of 1965 to 59% after (History.com Staff). During the time between the Civil War and the Great Depression, the United States became a more democratic society because of societal and technological advancements that changed the American way of life. In this paper, a democratic society will be defined as a society with a governmental system that involves the participation of its citizens to help effectively rule a nation that makes decisions through its elected officials. Before the Civil War, only had a handful of individuals participated in the democratic system of the United States, but by the Great Depression, many individuals participated in politics and influencing society. However, the one topic that everyone can agree on is the pursuit of an American utopia. An American utopia is imagined as a perfect society with no corruption, perfect harmony between civilians, and freedom of all types for American citizens. Even though the United States is closer to a utopian society than any other nation in the world, there are still plenty of inhibitors preventing a true utopia. Of these inhibitors, the two primary roadblocks restricting the United States from becoming a utopia are political extremism and censorship of speech. Political extremism is a massive roadblock from allowing the United States to become a utopia due to radical ideologies that lead to violence. On the extreme left side of the political spectrum is the group called Antifa, which stands for Anti–Fascist. They believe and claim to be against all forms of political fascism (however they do not exemplify this ideal) and free–market capitalism. The democracy in the United States makes it possible to secure one's economic freedom without government interruption, alternatively termed capitalism. In modern world, the contemporary take on capitalism is consumerism. Ironically, given that capitalism is part of democracy, it is not equally distributed. The presence of social class separates one consumer from another and restricts one's ability to purchase his or her want. Even with this constraint, consumerism is widely practiced right in democracy. In both works, Huxley warns the readers about the influence of consumerism by illustrating its usage in manipulating individual thoughts in the World State and its function in bringing materialism to Pala. In Brave New World, the World State exhorts consumerism in order to maintain the society stable. and Island, Huxley draws comparisons between the two Utopian societies, Pala and the World State, and the real world. "News" is a very broad statement and can mean many different things. It also brings all kinds of questions to mind. Originally I went with a broad question that later turned into a very specific topic making the research much easier. My first question was, "How does news based in the United States effect societies views on other countries? How does foreign news affect their societies' view on the United States?" By trying to find simple research on this through the MU Library, I was quick to find that in order to write a successful research paper it is vital to have a more specific question to get the answers you want. I was not finding specific research that included specific information on foreign news and its societal affects. After some struggles, one article popped out to me about news on foreign countries and their economy so I decided to look at how the positive and negative news written about a foreign country later effects that economy. My question then became, "How does an article written in a specific country affect the economy of a foreign nation?"
