Intrinsic and Extrinsic Motivation in College Students
Let's take a closer look at how motivation ties in with these intrinsic and extrinsic theories for
motivation. It is clear that motivation is one of the most prominent driving forces by which humans
pursue and ultimately achieve their goals. Motivation, quite simply, is rooted in the human instinct
to minimize pain and maximize pleasure. The characteristics of such a basic theory would usually
be about as clear cut as they come. However, motivation relies heavily on one's personal psychology
as well as specific situations. As noted before in the survey, it also has two very distinct and
different sides to it, those being intrinsic motivation and extrinsic motivation. Intrinsic motivation is
defined as a type of motivation that is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Identifying the learning style gives insight into what type of motivation will provide the best
response, and well as show what areas the person needs to work on to better their performance and
motivation as a whole. Although intrinsic motivation is generally preferred, more responsive, and
healthier, they are both effective and perhaps even necessary to the success of college students.
Understanding learning styles is one good way to help generate motivation in students, but it is only
the beginning when it comes to combatting the all too common problem of

How Extrinsic and Intrinsic Motivation for Employees Impacts the Customer Experience
Motivation takes on many forms, even in the workplace. Employee satisfaction brought on by
individualized motivation methods, produces a culture of growth and harmony. A residual benefit to
intentionally and methodically motivating each employee, in the manner that generates the best
productivity, is that it becomes a magnet for great customer experiences. Carol Sansone and Judith
Harackiewicz (2000) summarize "Motivation thus energizes and guides behavior toward reaching a
particular goal" (pg. 1). Employee satisfaction is often the foundation to a residual goal of customer
satisfaction.
Customers reap the rewards of a company that generously supplies its team members with both
intrinsic and extrinsic motivational techniques. The great rapport that is built between motivated
employees and customers produces an experience that is meaningful to all involved.
Striving to create an atmosphere at work that facilitates the use of motivation takes intentional effort
from all employees. However, the greatest burden rests upon the management sector, as they should
lead the charge for employee satisfaction. Consequently, the management team must fully
understand the difference between intrinsic and extrinsic motivation. Christine Young (2017) defines
intrinsic as, "the motivation to be involved in an activity for its own sake" and extrinsic as the
"motivation to engage in an activity as a means

Relationship Between Intrinsic And Extrinsic Motivation
Academic Paper Summary 1. First, there is a relationship between intrinsic and extrinsic
motivations with job satisfaction. According to the correlation value, intrinsic motivation compared
to extrinsic motivation tends to contribute more in job satisfaction. Second, there are significant and
positive relationship between intrinsic and extrinsic motivations and job satisfaction. Third, there is
no difference between gender and intrinsic and extrinsic motivations. Gender is not a factor that
affects both of the intrinsic and extrinsic motivations. Lastly, the result indicates that there is a
difference between age and intrinsic and extrinsic motivations. Age is the factor that influences on
both intrinsic and extrinsic motivations. 2. The purpose of this study was to develop and test a
multilevel framework in which employee service performance was examined as a joint function of
employee individual characteristics and service environment characteristics. In work addressing
organizational factors, a common theme is that if an organization values service and establishes
practices that facilitate and reward excellent service, a "Climate for service" is likely to emerge.

important in explaining service performance after factors at the other level are accounted ... Show

Motivation, Motivation And Intrinsic Motivation
Introduction
There are certain theories that works in the business organization at both practical and theoretical
levels and one of such theories is motivation. The term motivation has been defined, discussed and
has been dealt with a number of times as in accordance with the changing dynamics of the business
organizations. Richard M. Ryan and Edward L. Deci defines a person to be motivated if, a person is
moved to do something. (2000). Thereby it simply means that the one who is not energized or
focused to be moving to his desired goal is unmotivated.
In Self–Determination Theory (Carol Sansone, Judith M. Harackiewicz, 2000) the types of
motivation were differentiated on the basis of different reasons or goals which actually initiates an
action. However the major two types of motivation that have been dealt with in a number of
organizational structures seminars are Extrinsic Motivation and Intrinsic Motivation. Where
extrinsic motivation serves to meet the non–job or indirect needs of the employees, which could be
easily understood from the situation that money is used as a medium to accomplish the desired ends
but it does not mean that monetary motivation is the only motivation or money is considered to be a
sure tool of providing motivation, similarly in the career perspectives the jobs play as an major role
in achieving the desired needs by way of the bonuses and perks. This simply means that higher the
monetary allowances, higher is the motivation to the employees to

The Main Aspects Of Intrinsic Motivation For An Athlete
Motivation is crucial for an athlete in order to want to win. It is hard to want to win if you have no
motivation. The main aspect of motivation in terms of the self–determination theory is intrinsic
motivation. The self–determination theory can be defined as "a highly appropriate conceptual
framework from which to study sport persistence and dropout" (Calvo, Cervelló, Jiménez, Iglesias,
& Moreno Murcia, 2010). Intrinsic Motivation can be defined as "an athlete taking up playing a
sport just for the enjoyment of playing a sport" (Pelletier, Tuson, Fortier, Vallerand, & Briére, 1995).
It is important to realize that the self–determination theory affects an athlete's motivation
intrinsically (internally) because the self–determination theory uses factors like "autonomy" and
"competence" to motivate an athlete to play better in their sport. Most athletes, now and in the past,
find it easier to motivate themselves intrinsically if they enjoy the sport or have fun while playing
the sport (Ryan & Deci, 1985).
Definitions
Intrinsic Motivation has been experimented on for years and in order to prove its validity. Regarding
athletics, intrinsic motivation is defined as "an athlete taking up playing a sport just for the
enjoyment of playing a sport" (Pelletier et al., 1995). In an article published by Ryan & Deci, the
two argue that through their research, it was proven that having intrinsic motivation will help
engage an athlete because of the feeling of competence that arises

Taking a Look at Intrinsic Motivation
Need: Although there has been countless research done about intrinsic motivation, a lot of it is
conflicting when looking at comparisons. Previous studies have looked at the two mechanisms of
attribution and perceived competence, as well as the influence of extrinsic rewards on levels of
intrinsic motivation. However, they have not directly measured the two variables or focused on
reward contingency in multiple aspects in one study.
Purpose: The researchers of this experiment sought to clear up certain points, such as the need for
direct measures of perceived competence and causal attributions. They also focused on examining
the effects of extrinsic rewards that were dependent on ability versus effort, and the effect of
extrinsic rewards on increasing or decreasing intrinsic motivation. This is because extrinsic rewards
can influence feelings of self–efficacy or how an individual attributes their performance. In addition,
since expectancies on internal or external locus of control can affect attribution theory, a measure
for locus of control was included in the experiment.
Sample: During the spring semester at the University of Toronto, 42 undergraduate students chose to
participate in this experiment after seeing advertisements around campus. After contacting the
researchers, blind participants were randomly assigned to one of three conditions for three
upcoming sessions. Due to failure of participants not attending all 3 required sessions or computer

of a teacher. They also adopted a system of mastery goals and standards of evaluation that allows
them to make an independent assessment of the success or failure in the classroom without relying
on teachers for information or evaluation.
According to Deci (1975), intrinsic motivation can be described as a psychological condition caused
when individuals consider themselves capable and able to decide things by themselves. A person
suffering from high intrinsic motivation should be able to do something favored as driving a car,
visiting places is preferred, choose accommodation and choose the desired food. If he is given a gift
such as a visit to the places designated by the organizing body, the accommodation and food types
are determined by the parties, he did not get a chance to decide everything on your own. Therefore,
intrinsic motivation becomes too low.

Intrinsic And Extrinsic Motivations For Focus On The Learner
Focus on the Learner Page 1
Introduction:
Nowadays, it is well known that learning a second language is as important as studying in the high
school or the elementary school. English is one of the most important languages that we need to
know and understand, because almost all the jobs require it..
Student Background: My student´s name is Juan Pablo Cabuto. Juan is 11 years old, he lives with
his mother, father and sister, who is 5 years old. Juan is in 6th grade. His frist language is Spanish,
his mother knows English but she does not speak to him in English. He started to study English a
year ago, but then his schedule changed and he could not continue studying, that is why he knows
only a few things in English.
Motivation for Learning: What motivates Juan to continue studying English involves both intrinsic
and extrinsic motivations. First, his extrinsic motivation involves his getting into the secondary
school which his parents want him to go to, he needs English to attend. Juan shows his intrinsic
motivation by wanting to improve his English and thus be able to communicate with other people
around the world. He wants to understand the lyrics of the songs and finally he is interested in
computers and most of this information is in English.
Learning style: Janu is a visual and musical learner, he likes to observe first, and see how the
activity is going, visuals, movies, stories, he works better alone that in teams, because

Motivation Research Paper
Why are some people more motivated than others go to the gym? To get good grades? What drives
these people to do what they do? Science says that this drive to work hard comes from within.
Although the reward and punishment system is effective for basic tasks, creative tasks require a
different kind of motivation. True motivation comes from within ourselves and we are motivated,
and often more successful, by satisfying our needs for achieving a meaningful goal.
Intrinsic motivation is doing an activity for the satisfaction it gives you (Deci and Richard). It comes
from doing things that are important to you or that are part of something bigger. It comes from
doing important work and doing work that produces tangible results. In an experiment by Dan
Ariely, participants were asked to build Lego robots for a sum of money. Each robot they built they
received decreasingly less compensation and after every robot was built the robot was placed under

This intrinsic motivation that gets us to fulfill our basic demonstrates how strong intrinsic
motivation can be when applied. This motivation can be applied to things we find interesting or
meaningful. Studies have proven that you get more work done and are more successful when you
believe your work is meaningful and has higher impact. However, this motivation is scarce and is
often hard to find. Good quality extrinsic motivation can be effective, especially when the task only
involves simple tasks. No matter whether intrinsic motivation or an internalized external motivation
is in use that motivation comes from within. With this knowledge, we must learn to use these
motivational tactics to motivate others. The most effective and successful motivation comes from
within and is cultivated from satisfying our needs, achieving a goal, or working on meaningful

The Characteristics Of Intrinsic And Extrinsic Motivation
1.1 Background of the study
Motivation is a theoretically construct that used to explain our behaviour. It represents the reasons
for people's desire or actions. Motivation can also be defined as what causes a person want to repeat
behaviour or one's direction to behaviour. Behaviour is the way in which one acts or conducts
oneself, especially toward others.
Motivation can be describe as a starting point for any activity, job, intensity and persistence of
behaviour associate with particular task (Buckworth, Lee, Regan, Schneider, & Diclemente, 2007).
They also state that motivation can influence behaviour and they emphasize that basically
motivation consists of two types which is intrinsic and extrinsic motivation. Based on Buckworth et
al. (2007) intrinsic motivation reflect as the purpose for an individual performing a behaviour, for
example for the pleasure and satisfaction but in extrinsic motivation it is difference because an
individual performing the behaviour for the outcome and dependent on outside of the activity such
as award or evaluation. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Jowett (2008) also claimed that extrinsic motivation may not the main factor that can influence an
individual's action but have an important role in fulfil the human basic needs. Intrinsic motivation is
crucial for the education phenomenon. This is because education needs a natural learning process
for achievement and this is where the intrinsic motivation is needed. Ryan and Deci (2000) also
emphasized that any profession or responsibility that associated to education such as parent and
teacher need high quality in creativity which mean this quality cannot be develop by intrinsic
motivation but in the other hand, understanding on these different type of extrinsic motivation are

Both intrinsic and extrinsic motivation help to fit psychological values and beliefs of an individual.
Intrinsic motivation comes from the inside of an individual, such as the drive to do something.
Extrinsic motivation comes from the outside factors, such as doing something for a reward. There
are mixed emotions on whether or not people think intrinsic motivation is better than extrinsic
motivation. I personally believe that more people in this world have extrinsic motivation, rather than
intrinsic motivation. Intrinsically motivated students are ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Her main focus is the attention provided and the "bragging rights." Extrinsic motivation drives
people to do tasks for tangible or other types of rewards, rather than grasping what the task is really
about. Another example would be, a student is asked to complete an essay for his or her literature
class. The student has no drive or motivation to do so, but reluctantly completes the assignment to
avoid punishment or a bad grade. "There is no reason that money can't be an effective motivator, or
that grades can't motivate students in school. It's all a matter of individual differences. Different
people are motivated in different ways." –Steven Reiss, Psychology Professor at Ohio State
University. I agree with both of Mr. Reiss' quotes. He also mentioned that intrinsic motivation
couldn't be proved. I sort of agree with that statement as well. I will admit, it is nice to receive a
good grade or prize after doing something that you are not crazy about doing. But I also get the
intrinsic motives because it is a great feeling to actually want to learn something and strive to do
well in it because it is enjoyable in a way.

Motivation, Intrinsic And Extrinsic Motivation
Motivation is a very important factor no matter what sport you coach or what the team or athlete
goals are. A true coach must be able to understand their athlete and be able to tap into their
motivation, maximizing their performance. Chapter four was written about two particular types of
motivation, intrinsic and extrinsic. No matter what theory you believe, all theories boil down to
these two types of motivation. Knowing the difference between intrinsic and extrinsic motivation,
can help you hone in on athletes, their goals, and help them maximize their performance.
Succeeding in sports, really boils down to three main characteristics, helping athletes set goals and
work towards them, conducting reviews of athlete's performance with the athlete, and conduct team
sessions. When it comes towards motivation, the easiest way to get an athlete working towards a
goal is to sit down and conduct a goal setting session with them. Every person has goals they want
to attain, but may not know how to deploy a plan of action towards achieving those goals. There are
many ways to conduct goal setting, some ways are easier than others. One I like to use is a seven
step process. The athlete writes down their goal, being very specific, define where you are right
now, identify key areas to improve on in order to achieve the goal, identify actions to take and
attitudes to help keep moving towards the goal, identify a short term goal to begin momentum,
create an image of the goal that an

Motivation: Intrinsic vs. Extrinsic Essay
Motivation can be defined as the desire or inspiration to carry out specific tasks or to do something.
Motivation is required when goals are being set and more so in their execution. In a work setting,
motivation can be defined as a process through which individuals choose between alternative forms
of behavior with the aim of achieving personal objectives. The goals sought by individuals can be
extrinsic or relatively tangible such as monetary rewards and promotion, or intrinsic or intangible
such as self esteem or job satisfaction (Armstrong, 2006). In learning, the desire to attain good
grades is what motivates a student to study hard everyday as they prepare for the exam. On the other

Extrinsic motivation it is the motivation brought about by what a person is getting from a certain
task, rather than interest in the task. An example of extrinsic motivation is when a student who is not
particularly interested in math works hard in order to attain a good grade, and in a working person's
life, it could be working on a task that is not necessarily interesting to him/her, but that is giving a
good amount of financial reward. A good example of intrinsic motivation is working as a volunteer
in a children's home because taking care of children is of personal interest and satisfaction, to the
person, despite getting no reward. In a classroom setting, it may be clear that most students are more
extrinsically motivated to undertake their academic work, even though for some, it could be inherent
extrinsic motivation, an example being, a student who understands that studying hard and doing
assignments has a bigger reward in the long–term, as they will pass exams and attain good grades.
In the same class could be another student who does assignments to avoid sanctions by teachers or
parents (Lepper, Corpus and Iyengar, 2005). Both of these examples showcase students who are
extrinsically motivated to study even though one appears to be more inherently thoughtful of their
own benefit, while the other is doing it just to avoid punishment and is more dependent on the
teacher's or parent's reaction. Children mostly do things that are

Each of the jobs requires a great amount of hard work, dedication, and varying skills and abilities
depending on the tasks they are performing. Each of the different jobs conducted within our
charitable organization include task identity, each worker must complete their specific portion of
work from beginning to end, to then pass it on to the next employee so in the end they are all able to
see a tangible result. Each of the jobs within our charitable ogranization include the first three core
job characteristics, having skill variety, task identity, as well as a high level of task significance.
The five employees working at our charitable agency have the ability to affect the lives of many
families, and even the ability to change people's lives and get them the help that they need. Our
agency has the ability to affect the lives of other people in a positive way, which leads to intrinsic
motivation. Intrinsic motivation occurs when the employees have positive internal feelings that are
generated by doing well, rather than being dependent on external factors like incentive pay or
compliments from the boss, leading to motivation to work effectively.

Intrinsic Motivation And Student Success
The United States of America is known for being a country filled with people of many different
ethnic backgrounds. Likewise, the student population in schools is just as diverse as it continues to
grow. Lynch (2015) notes that schools are expected to teach their students "how to synthesize
cultural differences into their knowledge base" as this will help "facilitate students' personal and
professional success in a diverse world" (para. 8). Educators must be able to provide for the diverse
needs of students and are expected to equip students with skills that can lead to healthy development
as it can affect higher levels of student achievement and students have more opportunities of success
in their future. Providing students with tools and skills requires an awareness and acceptance of their
ethnic identity. Once students have developed self–acceptance about their ethnic identity, they can
begin to feel empowered and motivated to do well. Through cultural empowerment, students of
color can develop intrinsic motivation and achieve academic success.

Introduction
Most folks in the workforce believe they are obligated to do their best at their job simply because
that is what is expected. I am one of those individuals who take pride in my job and I do it well but
set a part from being a way to afford life's expenses, I'm always in search of my legacy. The legacy I
want is embodied in my desire to showcase a body of work that demonstrates the three units of
intrinsic motivation that Dan Pink attributes to the most creative workers; "Autonomy, Mastery, and
Purpose" (Pink 2009). On the other hand, there are those folks out there that want to only do as
much as they can get away with doing. Regardless of which type of employee makes up, an
organization, leaders need to understand the science and application of motivation in business
processes. Motivation comes in many forms such as money, benefits, or simple recognition;
extrinsic and intrinsic. The right type of motivation can lead to exponentially higher productivity
and profits and that is what we are all looking for in business.
The aim of this paper is to provide an analysis of what science teaches about motivation and give a

Intrinsic And Extrinsic Motivation
An organization may have any number of goals, for example, sales growth, market leadership, profit
maximization and customer satisfaction. It is clear that an organization will only be successful if
employees are performing their tasks at a consistently high level and in line with the company's
objectives. To achieve this, organizations have tended to reward employees who demonstrate this
high level of performance and behavior (Gatenby et al., 2008). These rewards may be intrinsic
and/or extrinsic. Many theorists have critically discussed the core aspects of employee motivation,
concluding that intrinsic and extrinsic rewards will only be motivating if these are of value to the
individual. Intrinsic motivation lies in the internal satisfaction of an individual – concerning only the
enjoyment of the task itself. Whereas extrinsic motivation focuses on external outcomes, in
particular financial rewards (Psycnet.apa.org, 2017). In this essay rewards will be regarded as
tangible or intangible assets in response to an individual's achievement (Oxford
Dictionaries⎪English, 2017), and motivation will focus on the behavioral aspects of why an
individual's productivity and performance increases.
The extent to which an individual values a certain reward is entirely dependent on their personal
preferences and circumstances, as well as the composition of the task. When the reward received is
the reward most valued, motivation could increase only to the point where a competitive

Motivation: Extrinsic to Intrinsic
Motivation is a key factor in determining business success or failure. Successful organizations
relentlessly seek to operate with a clear understanding of employee needs , and develop specific
focus' on how to meet them. Two key theories in organizational motivation are expectancy theory
and equity theory. Both theories focus on the outcomes of a given decision or system rather than on
individual employee needs. The goal of both process theories is to increase output.

process theory is evident. Computer companies run operations based on equity and expectancy

Positive feedback cycles occur when sanction is properly implemented.
Extrinsic reward for incorrect reasons is deadly to organizational value creation systems. Extrinsic
reward provided for performance of expected task decreases the value of future extrinsic reward and
creates expectation of future extrinsic reward for routine tasks. Expectation created through over
rewarding ends in withholding of high levels of extrinsic reward for average performance and is
perceived as sanction. Instrumentality is decreased as effort is perceived as unrewarded. Effort is
reduced to poor performance levels so that effort is matching perceived instrumentality. Successful
organizations implement highly structure extrinsic reward systems that deliver consistent feedback
regarding instrumentality to avoid over rewarding.
Improperly controlled sanction is deadly to organizational efficiency. Sanction that is implemented
through withholding of extrinsic reward destroys intrinsic reward and motivation if applied
incorrectly. Sales teams that do not have the appropriate materials, knowledge, or support structure
to perform at a high level should not be sanctioned. If groups are sanctioned through withholding of
extrinsic rewards in situations in which other factors are the key reasons for failure group
motivation is annihilated. Sanction for failure to attain success that is not attainable removes all
intrinsic motivation.

motivation can be defined as internal factors that serve their satisfaction and enjoyment. Extrinsic
motivation is the opposite of intrinsic drives, which is that people act in a certain way because of
external incentives. The most common form of external motivation is financial rewards. In today's

Motivation is one factor which energies, influences,or controls human behaviors ("Intrinsic and

There is a clear evidence that intrinsic motivations reflect human life during young infants, which is

Intrinsic Factors
One of commonly studied types of motivation is intrinsic and extrinsic, and the difference between
them has played significant part on both developmental and educational practices. Intrinsic
motivation remains an important concept, reflecting the natural human susceptibility to learn and
adapt (Ryan & Deci, 2000). Intrinsic motivation is defined as the behavior of an individual that is
being stimulated by internal rewards. The motivation to involve in a behavior arises from within the
individual because it is rewarding intrinsically, (Cherry, 2015).
According to Ryan & Deci (2000), they distinguish between different types of motivation based on
the different reasons or goals that drives an individual to move. The simplest distinction is between
intrinsic motivation, which refers to doing something because it is inherently interesting or
enjoyable, and extrinsic motivation, which refers to doing something because it leads to a separable
outcome. While indicated that Intrinsic motivation is doing an activity for its individual own
satisfaction rather than for some separable significance. He added that when a person is intrinsically
motivated an individual moved for the pleasurable or challenge entailed rather than because of
external urges, pressures, or rewards.

because he might find the task challenging or else interesting and satisfied with completing it. This
is due to the fact the external rewards hardly motivate these students. In chapter 3 of the book, Pink
points out about type I behavior "Type I behavior is self–directed. It is devoted to becoming better
and better at something that matters. And it connects that quest for excellence to a larger purpose"
(78–79). This explains that motivation 3.0 leads student to good behavior and tends to be very much
effective in the long run as the students perform the tasks willingly because it interests them, rather
than trying to escape from it once the task is done. Furthermore, motivation 3.0 increases effort and
persistence in activities and affects cognitive processes. As we discovered in chapter 4 about
autonomy, Pink explains "According to a cluster of recent behavioral science studies, autonomous
motivation promotes greater conceptual understanding, better grades, enhanced persistence at school
and in sporting activities, higher productivity, less burnout, and greater levels of psychological well–
being" (88–89). Motivation 3.0 increases the amount of effort and energy that students

Essay on Intrinsic and Extrinsic Motivation
When a person plans or wants to do something, he or she has a motivation for that specific thing. In
other words, when a person does something, that person has a reason why he or she should do that
thing. Not always there is a reason to do something, but sometimes may be many reasons that are
backing a person to take those actions to do it. This happens not only to humans, or living
organisms, but also in nonliving organisms. An example is when a rock which had bounced after it
hit the floor while falling down. Scientists may tell some of the reasons why the rock does that kind
of action, but they cannot tell all of the reasons that back the rock's actions. A similar thing, as the
scientists, was Alfie Kohn trying to do in his essay, "Why ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

The reason is that the reward is not the main thing that is backing up the action; but something else
that could be self–develop, peace, etc. An example is a boy does his homework just because he was
told by his parents to do his homework. Based on that the boy believes that his parents know what is
best for him to do.
On the other hand, extrinsic motivation is when a person takes actions knowing that at the end of
that action there is a reward waiting for him or her. In this case, the person does it not because
thinking about self–development, peace, etc. but about the reward. An example could be that the
boy's mother will not let the boy watch his favorite cartoons, until he finishes his homework. That
way the boy will finish his homework just to be able to watch the cartoons, but does not care if he
fully understands the materials on which the homework was about.
Third possibility is the both type of motivations, intrinsic and extrinsic, are the reason for someone's
action. It is when the person is doing something knowing there is going to be a reward at the end,
also during that action the person will develop in skills, professionalism, etc. The example could be
taken from the essay that Kohn wrote. The reward that Kohn could have got is being paid for
writing the essay, with the main back up that the action will bring development of experiences in
writing professionally. Another example could be a man runs in a burning building to save his
neighbor's kid. That man

Intrinsic Motivation, By Daniel Pink
At the point when a person arranges or needs to accomplish something, he or she has a motivation
for that particular thing. As it were, the point at which a person accomplishes something, that person
has a motivation behind why he or she ought to do that thing. Not generally there is motivation to
accomplish something, yet in some cases might be numerous reasons that are support a person to
take those activities to do it. Two of those motivations which Daniel Pink discusses are intrinsic and
extrinsic motivation, and how they are once in a while consolidated together. Dweck in the other
hand thinks as motivation in another way by intelligence praise. To change, we need to have a goal

appealing idea, and even though it was exceedingly well–intentioned, I believe it has disastrous

Intrinsic Motivation in Public Organizations is an essential principal. It is clear that employee
engagement and motivation is a vital part of the workplace. We spend almost more time with them
as a full time employee than our own family. Fellow workers become our second family with the
workplace acting as a home away from home. Everyone wants a healthy environment to come to.
The public sector and organizations are more challenging to motivate due to the application of
ethical guidelines and outside influence from others. Society sees the public sector as overpaid and
underworked. Unfortunately, this leads to low morale and negatively impact employee positive

Essay on Intrinsic versus Extrinsic Motivation
Intrinsic versus Extrinsic Motivation
Introduction
The success of any business depends on the productivity and satisfaction of its employees.
Employees need to be motivated to work. Motivation can be defined as the inner force that drives
individuals to accomplish personal and organizational goals. Motivation can be either intrinsic or
extrinsic. For an individual to be motivated in a work situation there must be a need, which the
individual would have to perceive a possibility of satisfying through some reward. Intrinsic
motivation stems from motivations that are inherent and arise from performing the task of the job
itself, which the individual gets a feeling of either positive or negative motivation as a result of ...

Those that are intrinsically motivated have a bit of advantages over workers who are more
predominantly extrinsically motivated. For instance, intrinsically motivated people work on job
tasks because they find them enjoyable and interesting. Additionally, there is evidence showing that
intrinsic motivation is positively correlated with learning, achievement, perception of competence
and self–efficacy. At the same time, it is negatively correlated with anxiety, depression, and
frustration. An intrinsically motivated individual will be committed to his or her work to the extent
to which the job inherently contains tasks that are inherently rewarding to him or her (Lei, 2010).
Drawbacks of Intrinsic Motivation Although intrinsic motivation has numerous benefits, few
drawbacks of intrinsic motivation should also be considered as well. An intense form of intrinsic
motivation can reach to the point that employees can completely lose track of time and space,
completely ignore authority and other important tasks, as well as not having enough time to learn or
perform other essential tasks while learning and enjoying a particular academic activity. When
performing an enjoyable task, a person can lose track of space or self–awareness. Individuals
motivated by intrinsic gratification seek an experience for itself, rather than for anticipated rewards.
The process is considerably more important to them than the resulting product or outcome, which
has them working often

Assess The Difference Between Intrinsic And Extrinsic...
The debate between intrinsic and extrinsic motivation and whether there is a meaningful distinction
between them continues to be a subject of debate (Latham, 2012). However, most seem to admit that
there are clear differences in the source of these motivations, even if there is a lack of consensus as
to the differences. A study conducted by Lee, Reeve, Xue, and Xiong (2012) showed that intrinsic
motivation displays complex neurophysiological activity in which individuals experience an intense
psychological process that comes from inherent feelings. Furthermore, Lee et al. (2012) found
neural evidence that extrinsic motivation seems to be generated through environmental possibilities
and contingencies. Therefore, it is possible that intrinsic

Intrinsic motivation
Young children are compelled to learn because of their natural curiosity in life. Older children seem
to need a push in the direction to learn. This describes the two types of motivation. Intrinsic
motivation describes the young child. It is motivation from within and the desire someone feels to
complete a task, including natural curiosity. Intrinsic motivation is anything we do to motivate
ourselves without rewards from an outside source. "In relation to learning, one is compelled to learn
by a motive to understand, originating from their own curiosity" (Rehmke–Ribary, 2003 p.intrinsic).
There are different things a teacher can do to trigger this type of motivation in students. "Some

Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs
At the basis of motivation there are many factors that may not been seen right away. One must take
a look at physiological reasons for motivation. How do we get students to their fullest potential?
Abraham Maslow introduced the concept of self–actualization. This is the idea that we use our
abilities to our fullest potential. If we can convince our students that they are capable of fulfilling
their goals then they are on their way to self–efficacy. (Elliot, 2000 p.335). Self–actualization is the
highest goal to reach in motivation. It is placed at the top of Maslow's pyramid called the hierarchy
of needs. This pyramid includes five needs that must be met before self–actualization can develop.
The idea of Maslow's hierarchy of needs is that if basic needs are not met, motivation cannot occur.
The first need is physiological needs. These are things such as hunger and sleep. If these needs are
not met, a student's motivation is dominantly focused on these things. The next need up on the
pyramid is safety needs. These needs

The Concept Of Intrinsic Motivation Theory
In addition to Maslow's self– actualization and moreover, there is self–determination theory (SDT),
which suggests that people are motivated to grow and change by innate psychological needs. The
theory identifies three key psychological needs that are believed to be both innate and universal: the
needs for competence, connectedness and autonomy. The concept of intrinsic motivation plays an
important role in self–determination theory. Psychologists Edward Deci and Richard Ryan
developed SDT and determined motivation to be that which people tend to be driven by; a need to
grow and gain fulfillment. The first consideration of self–determination theory is that people are
actively directed toward growth, mastering challenges, and taking on new experiences, which are
essential for developing a cohesive sense of self. Explained further by Deci and Ryan (2002), "SDT
begins by embracing the assumption that all individuals have natural, innate, and constructive
tendencies to develop an ever more elaborated and unified sense of self. That is, we assume people
have a primary propensity to forge interconnections among aspects of their own psyches as well as
with other individuals and groups in their social worlds."
SDT embodies a wide–ranging outline for human motivation and personality. SDT articulates a
meta–theory for framing motivational studies, a formal theory that defines intrinsic and a variety of
extrinsic motivations. Furthermore, SDT also focuses on how social and

Intrinsic And Extrinsic Motivations
4. What motivates you extrinsically? What are your intrinsic motivations? How do you balance
extrinsic and intrinsic motivation in your life?
In terms of extrinsic motivations, I think that I am motivated by praise, reputation, and financial
gain. While money is not the most important aspect of a career, I would like to earn a salary that
helps me maintain a modest living. Being self–aware, I realize that I want a career where I can help
others, which is an intrinsic motivation. This is another reason why I was unhappy in my accounting
co–op position, because it was very difficult for me to accomplish tasks that didn't help others. As a
result, I wouldn't take a lucrative job offer if it didn't provide me with benevolent job
responsibilities. In order to balance my intrinsic and extrinsic motivations, I think that compromise
is key. Since life's challenges can interfere with one's morals, I realize that it may be difficult to
compromise in certain situations. However, I think that success in the business world ultimately
stems from ethical actions, because it will cultivate trust within your customers. As a result, my goal
is to work for companies who care about their stakeholders, because the results will pay off in the
long run.
Not to sound like a millennial cliché, but I want my work to be meaningful for others and myself.
This objective stems from my intrinsic motivations, but praise from colleagues, superiors, and
customers will ensure that my work is meaningful.

The Motivation And Intrinsic Motivation
All children are unique and learn in different ways, however, when it comes to their motivation they
will most likely fall into one of two categories. Extrinsic motivation revolves around grades and
points and competition, and intrinsic motivation stems more from personal interests, sense of
belonging, and passion to grow. (Carol Dweck). Roman, an 11–year–old high functioning autistic
child, had no desire to participate in any class learning when I began working with him. He only
excitedly and willingly participated when the situation was mandatory or if rewards were included.

format and structure of the activities. When rules are provided to the children in an autonomy–
supportive way (explanatory rationales, and acknowledgment of the children's perspectives and
feelings) there is no decrease in engagement as opposed to children who do not have their input
included. (Skinner and Belmot 1999). Personal interest, opinions, and overall intrinsic factors are
why Roman started becoming eager and excited to engage and try new things.
Including more team based activities helped Roman feel a sense of belonging and safety.
Maintaining a high ratio of positive statements as well as expressing respect for all students, builds
trust in the classroom. (Evertson, C. M., & Emmer, E. T). By implementing activities that had more
of a collaborative process, peer encouragement and help were more evident and motivation can
increase when everyone feels safe and helps each other. (Hagelskamp, C. 51 (3–4), 530–54). Roman
began not fearing participating in activities once he knew that everyone supported each other and
their input. Additionally, educational games where students cheer on their teammates boosted self
esteem, and the emotional well–being of students can influence the quality of their participation.

Paul Lawrence theory explains about the human nature and it describes about the four factors that
will affect the human nature and these factors are bond ,acquire, learn and defend. These factors also
called drives but the question is this what drives an individual.Every individual has several drives
but all drives cannot be satisfied at a time.
The first drive is acquire, and it describes how a human improve his status by acquiring experiences
and it is very common. It describes how human compete with others in his life like employees of the
same company have competitions with other employees for different positions and salary.
Next is bonding,as it is very important in making relationships .The bond is considered to be strong
as it will make by mutual understanding and sharing.Employees working in a group have the
advantage of managing the organization in a better way.
The third factor is drive to learn and it describes that if a human has willingness of learning the
things in the environment then he will come to know that how things are working .If he has a job
then he has the opportunity of developing his knowledge in his field.
The fourth factor is defend,it describes how humans protect themselves if they feel any harm on

With highly developed science nowadays, people still not quite understand how we motivate, and
what actually support us to attain our dream in daily life. Although huge numbers of scientists keep
researching on how motivation works in our brain, we cannot make a conclusion about the truth of
the motivation in the past century. Luckily, Daniel Pink announces his latest results, "The Puzzle of
Motivation", on TED in 2009, which gives us a brand new idea about our motivation and how we
could improve us by learning his method. In this essay, I will illustrates the main point of Daniel
Pink, the evidence given in his speech, also the benefits I get from his idea which increase my self–
motivation and helps me improve my study experience. According to "The Puzzle of Motivation",
the speech given by Daniel Pink (2009) on TED, Pink demonstrates idea that our motivation has
many different methods, which well known as extrinsic motivation and intrinsic motivation. But it
also could have even more complex motivation methods, such as extrinsic and intrinsic combined
motivation, depends on different tasks. Reward could give us positive motivation and improve us
work efficiency, however, it is limited on easy job, and people given a clearly direction on how to
complete the mission. For creative and complex task, rewards can narrow our views, or even harm.

Incentive Theories: Intrinsic And Extrinsic Motivation (Edit)
Incentive theories: intrinsic and extrinsic motivation[edit]
Motivation can be divided into two different theories known as intrinsic (internal or inherent)
motivation and extrinsic (external) motivation.
Intrinsic motivation[edit]

Intrinsic motivation has been studied since the early 1970s. Intrinsic motivation is the self–desire to
seek out new things and new challenges, to analyze one's capacity, to observe and to gain
knowledge.[5] It is driven by an interest or enjoyment in the task itself, and exists within the
individual rather than relying on external pressures or a desire for consideration. The phenomenon
of intrinsic motivation was first acknowledged within experimental studies of animal behavior. In
these studies, it was evident that the organisms would engage in playful and curiosity driven
behaviors in the absence of reward. Intrinsic motivation is a natural motivational tendency and is a
critical element in cognitive, social, and physical development.[6] Students who are intrinsically
motivated are more likely to engage in the task willingly as well ... Show more content on

In extrinsic motivation, the harder question to answer is where do people get the motivation to carry
out and continue to push with persistence. Usually extrinsic motivation is used to attain outcomes
that a person wouldn't get from intrinsic motivation.[11] Common extrinsic motivations are rewards
(for example money or grades) for showing the desired behavior, and the threat of punishment
following misbehavior. Competition is an extrinsic motivator because it encourages the performer to
win and to beat others, not simply to enjoy the intrinsic rewards of the activity. A cheering crowd

Intrinsic and Extrinsic Motivation
Students are generally classified by two different types of motivation, which are, intrinsic and
extrinsic motivation. These two types of motivation are the basis for a student's action and their
view of how they perceive schooling and even life. The first type of motivation is intrinsic
motivation, which "generally refers to motivation to engage in an activity because that activity is
enjoyable and satisfying to do" (Noels, Pelletier, Clément, & Vallerand, pg. 38, 2003). Intrinsic
motivation is generally the best type of motivation for students to have, because doing certain
activities is not being forced upon them; however, the students are enjoying the activities by
themselves. This also leads to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Four Important Age Groups
Achieving motivation in the classroom setting is a very difficult task especially since every person is
motivated differently and different types of motivation must be applied depending on the age group
of the students. There are four major groups that are categorized by age. The first major age group is
the primary–grade students, which consist of students in elementary school, Kindergarten through
fifth grade. Motivation for this age group can be achieved in a positive physical environment and a
psychological atmosphere. Creating a positive physical environment for the students could involve
having the classroom decorated with brightly colored signs and posters (Doyle, 1986). This
environment would create a friendly atmosphere that would inspire students to be interested in what
they are doing in the classroom. In Lumsden's article on students' motivation to learn, she states,
"Young children appear to be propelled by curiosity, driven by an intense need to explore, interact
with, and make sense of their environment" (1994). This again proves that a primary–grade student's
motivation can be created through a positive physical environment. An effective way to create a
positive psychological atmosphere, according to Raffini, is that when students give incorrect or
incomplete answers, the teacher communicates to them that mistakes are a normal. They are a
natural part of the

The Importance Of Intrinsic Motivation At Work
As a leader of Sunoco, dealing with this crisis would need to be swift, effective, build sustainability,
remove complacency, snakes, egos and above all, introduce intrinsic rewards; especially, when
trying to retain employees who truly desire a future with the company. Doing so would involve an
approach that requires all hands–on deck, from top to bottom, no exception. Training would not be
limited to seniors only, a matter of fact, every employee would be required to receive professional
training. Although intrinsic and extrinsic rewards are relevant (mainly intrinsic), it is imperative that
all employees recognize the strength of their rewards, which leads to finding something meaningful
according to their strength. Organizations experience greater benefits when intrinsic rewards are
present; hence, my reason for saying mainly intrinsic. Intrinsic rewards represent the way a person
feel, their burning desire to explore avenues of creativity and support and not viewing monetary
rewards as a primary benefit. It includes: a sense of meaningfulness, sense of choice, sense of
competence and a sense of progress. The following has been said by Thomas in the book 'Intrinsic
Motivation at Work:'
1. "All four rewards are accompanied by increased positive emotions about work and by decreased
negative emotions." (Thomas, 2009, pg. 68)
2. "Across all organizational levels, people who score higher on the intrinsic rewards report higher
satisfaction with their professional development.

Intrinsic Motivation
Sometimes a student can be fascinated in a subject and are eager to learn more without outside
influence or help. This kind of a situation is when there exists a large amount of intrinsic incentive
to motivate a child. It is when a student enjoys an aspect of an activity enough to be motivated
within. An intrinsic incentive could arise in any subject of interest such as dinosaurs, famous people,
or far off places. However, topics that are learned in schools today do not arouse children since they
find the information useless in their everyday lives (Slavin, 2000). The role of personal interest is
crucial in a learning situation. It has been proven that a child who is intrinsically motivated tend to

It is crucial to raise the curiosity of the children and show how the material being taught can be
useful to them in their daily lives. Children need a reason for learning. They desire a connection
between their personal goals and the knowledge being given in the classroom (White, 1997).
Recognizing the students' interests and basing the curriculum on them will provide the teacher with
activities that can increase intrinsic motivation to learn. There should be times where students are
given a choice about what they will study and in what way they will study the subject (Slavin,
2000). Children need to know that their needs are being met in the lessons and that it provides
information of value to them.
Participation
Having students participate will increase interest as well. Standing in front of the children and
lecturing will not stimulate them at all times. There also is a need for hands–on activities, chances to
help the teacher, giving input on lessons, working with each other, some other ways getting
physically engaged in the lessons. Students love to be helpful and needed in a classroom. It permits
them to show they can be useful and can improve self–esteem (Harris, 1991). An interesting
curriculum promotes participation. The archenemy of motivation is boredom. Every teacher has a
measure of freedom that needs to be used to create a fascinating curriculum to maximize interest
(McDaniel, 1987).

Intrinsic Motivation Key to Student Success

  • 1. Intrinsic and Extrinsic Motivation in College Students Let's take a closer look at how motivation ties in with these intrinsic and extrinsic theories for motivation. It is clear that motivation is one of the most prominent driving forces by which humans pursue and ultimately achieve their goals. Motivation, quite simply, is rooted in the human instinct to minimize pain and maximize pleasure. The characteristics of such a basic theory would usually be about as clear cut as they come. However, motivation relies heavily on one's personal psychology as well as specific situations. As noted before in the survey, it also has two very distinct and different sides to it, those being intrinsic motivation and extrinsic motivation. Intrinsic motivation is defined as a type of motivation that is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Identifying the learning style gives insight into what type of motivation will provide the best response, and well as show what areas the person needs to work on to better their performance and motivation as a whole. Although intrinsic motivation is generally preferred, more responsive, and healthier, they are both effective and perhaps even necessary to the success of college students. Understanding learning styles is one good way to help generate motivation in students, but it is only the beginning when it comes to combatting the all too common problem of ... • 2. Intrinsic And Extrinsic Motivation How Extrinsic and Intrinsic Motivation for Employees Impacts the Customer Experience Motivation takes on many forms, even in the workplace. Employee satisfaction brought on by individualized motivation methods, produces a culture of growth and harmony. A residual benefit to intentionally and methodically motivating each employee, in the manner that generates the best productivity, is that it becomes a magnet for great customer experiences. Carol Sansone and Judith Harackiewicz (2000) summarize "Motivation thus energizes and guides behavior toward reaching a particular goal" (pg. 1). Employee satisfaction is often the foundation to a residual goal of customer satisfaction. Customers reap the rewards of a company that generously supplies its team members with both intrinsic and extrinsic motivational techniques. The great rapport that is built between motivated employees and customers produces an experience that is meaningful to all involved. Striving to create an atmosphere at work that facilitates the use of motivation takes intentional effort from all employees. However, the greatest burden rests upon the management sector, as they should lead the charge for employee satisfaction. Consequently, the management team must fully understand the difference between intrinsic and extrinsic motivation. Christine Young (2017) defines intrinsic as, "the motivation to be involved in an activity for its own sake" and extrinsic as the "motivation to engage in an activity as a means ... • 3. Relationship Between Intrinsic And Extrinsic Motivation Academic Paper Summary 1. First, there is a relationship between intrinsic and extrinsic motivations with job satisfaction. According to the correlation value, intrinsic motivation compared to extrinsic motivation tends to contribute more in job satisfaction. Second, there are significant and positive relationship between intrinsic and extrinsic motivations and job satisfaction. Third, there is no difference between gender and intrinsic and extrinsic motivations. Gender is not a factor that affects both of the intrinsic and extrinsic motivations. Lastly, the result indicates that there is a difference between age and intrinsic and extrinsic motivations. Age is the factor that influences on both intrinsic and extrinsic motivations. 2. The purpose of this study was to develop and test a multilevel framework in which employee service performance was examined as a joint function of employee individual characteristics and service environment characteristics. In work addressing organizational factors, a common theme is that if an organization values service and establishes practices that facilitate and reward excellent service, a "Climate for service" is likely to emerge. Examining one level at a time prevents one from knowing whether factors at one level remain important in explaining service performance after factors at the other level are accounted ... Big Five taxonomy instead of more specific personality traits facilitates the accumulation of knowledge and comparison of findings across studies of personality. Some insignificant findings of this study are particularly thought–provoking. Although they might be consequences of insufficient statistical power that was due to the small size of the sample, they may well suggest necessary modifications in measurement or model specification in future research. For example, service training and performance incentives were not found to relate to service performance. empirical and theoretical work on service ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Motivation, Motivation And Intrinsic Motivation Introduction There are certain theories that works in the business organization at both practical and theoretical levels and one of such theories is motivation. The term motivation has been defined, discussed and has been dealt with a number of times as in accordance with the changing dynamics of the business organizations. Richard M. Ryan and Edward L. Deci defines a person to be motivated if, a person is moved to do something. (2000). Thereby it simply means that the one who is not energized or focused to be moving to his desired goal is unmotivated. In Self–Determination Theory (Carol Sansone, Judith M. Harackiewicz, 2000) the types of motivation were differentiated on the basis of different reasons or goals which actually initiates an action. However the major two types of motivation that have been dealt with in a number of organizational structures seminars are Extrinsic Motivation and Intrinsic Motivation. Where extrinsic motivation serves to meet the non–job or indirect needs of the employees, which could be easily understood from the situation that money is used as a medium to accomplish the desired ends but it does not mean that monetary motivation is the only motivation or money is considered to be a sure tool of providing motivation, similarly in the career perspectives the jobs play as an major role in achieving the desired needs by way of the bonuses and perks. This simply means that higher the monetary allowances, higher is the motivation to the employees to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. The Main Aspects Of Intrinsic Motivation For An Athlete Motivation is crucial for an athlete in order to want to win. It is hard to want to win if you have no motivation. The main aspect of motivation in terms of the self–determination theory is intrinsic motivation. The self–determination theory can be defined as "a highly appropriate conceptual framework from which to study sport persistence and dropout" (Calvo, Cervelló, Jiménez, Iglesias, & Moreno Murcia, 2010). Intrinsic Motivation can be defined as "an athlete taking up playing a sport just for the enjoyment of playing a sport" (Pelletier, Tuson, Fortier, Vallerand, & Briére, 1995). It is important to realize that the self–determination theory affects an athlete's motivation intrinsically (internally) because the self–determination theory uses factors like "autonomy" and "competence" to motivate an athlete to play better in their sport. Most athletes, now and in the past, find it easier to motivate themselves intrinsically if they enjoy the sport or have fun while playing the sport (Ryan & Deci, 1985). Definitions Intrinsic Motivation has been experimented on for years and in order to prove its validity. Regarding athletics, intrinsic motivation is defined as "an athlete taking up playing a sport just for the enjoyment of playing a sport" (Pelletier et al., 1995). In an article published by Ryan & Deci, the two argue that through their research, it was proven that having intrinsic motivation will help engage an athlete because of the feeling of competence that arises ... • 6. Taking a Look at Intrinsic Motivation Need: Although there has been countless research done about intrinsic motivation, a lot of it is conflicting when looking at comparisons. Previous studies have looked at the two mechanisms of attribution and perceived competence, as well as the influence of extrinsic rewards on levels of intrinsic motivation. However, they have not directly measured the two variables or focused on reward contingency in multiple aspects in one study. Purpose: The researchers of this experiment sought to clear up certain points, such as the need for direct measures of perceived competence and causal attributions. They also focused on examining the effects of extrinsic rewards that were dependent on ability versus effort, and the effect of extrinsic rewards on increasing or decreasing intrinsic motivation. This is because extrinsic rewards can influence feelings of self–efficacy or how an individual attributes their performance. In addition, since expectancies on internal or external locus of control can affect attribution theory, a measure for locus of control was included in the experiment. Sample: During the spring semester at the University of Toronto, 42 undergraduate students chose to participate in this experiment after seeing advertisements around campus. After contacting the researchers, blind participants were randomly assigned to one of three conditions for three upcoming sessions. Due to failure of participants not attending all 3 required sessions or computer ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

According to Deci (1975), intrinsic motivation can be described as a psychological condition caused when individuals consider themselves capable and able to decide things by themselves. A person suffering from high intrinsic motivation should be able to do something favored as driving a car, visiting places is preferred, choose accommodation and choose the desired food. If he is given a gift such as a visit to the places designated by the organizing body, the accommodation and food types are determined by the parties, he did not get a chance to decide everything on your own. Intrinsic And Extrinsic Motivations For Focus On The Learner Focus on the Learner Page 1 Introduction: Nowadays, it is well known that learning a second language is as important as studying in the high school or the elementary school. English is one of the most important languages that we need to know and understand, because almost all the jobs require it.. Student Background: My student´s name is Juan Pablo Cabuto. Juan is 11 years old, he lives with his mother, father and sister, who is 5 years old. Juan is in 6th grade. His frist language is Spanish, his mother knows English but she does not speak to him in English. He started to study English a year ago, but then his schedule changed and he could not continue studying, that is why he knows only a few things in English. Motivation for Learning: What motivates Juan to continue studying English involves both intrinsic and extrinsic motivations. First, his extrinsic motivation involves his getting into the secondary school which his parents want him to go to, he needs English to attend. • 9. Strong Intrinsic Motivation Motivation Research Paper Why are some people more motivated than others go to the gym? To get good grades? What drives these people to do what they do? Science says that this drive to work hard comes from within. Although the reward and punishment system is effective for basic tasks, creative tasks require a different kind of motivation. True motivation comes from within ourselves and we are motivated, and often more successful, by satisfying our needs for achieving a meaningful goal. Intrinsic motivation is doing an activity for the satisfaction it gives you (Deci and Richard). It comes from doing things that are important to you or that are part of something bigger. It comes from doing important work and doing work that produces tangible results. In an experiment by Dan Ariely, participants were asked to build Lego robots for a sum of money. Each robot they built they received decreasingly less compensation and after every robot was built the robot was placed under the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This intrinsic motivation that gets us to fulfill our basic demonstrates how strong intrinsic motivation can be when applied. This motivation can be applied to things we find interesting or meaningful. Studies have proven that you get more work done and are more successful when you believe your work is meaningful and has higher impact. However, this motivation is scarce and is often hard to find. Good quality extrinsic motivation can be effective, especially when the task only involves simple tasks. No matter whether intrinsic motivation or an internalized external motivation is in use that motivation comes from within. With this knowledge, we must learn to use these motivational tactics to motivate others. • 10. The Characteristics Of Intrinsic And Extrinsic Motivation 1.1 Background of the study Motivation is a theoretically construct that used to explain our behaviour. It represents the reasons for people's desire or actions. Motivation can also be defined as what causes a person want to repeat behaviour or one's direction to behaviour. Behaviour is the way in which one acts or conducts oneself, especially toward others. Motivation can be describe as a starting point for any activity, job, intensity and persistence of behaviour associate with particular task (Buckworth, Lee, Regan, Schneider, & Diclemente, 2007). They also state that motivation can influence behaviour and they emphasize that basically motivation consists of two types which is intrinsic and extrinsic motivation. Based on Buckworth et al. (2007) intrinsic motivation reflect as the purpose for an individual performing a behaviour, for example for the pleasure and satisfaction but in extrinsic motivation it is difference because an individual performing the behaviour for the outcome and dependent on outside of the activity such as award or evaluation. ... Losche PSY–432 Ken 2 Both intrinsic and extrinsic motivation help to fit psychological values and beliefs of an individual. Intrinsic motivation comes from the inside of an individual, such as the drive to do something. Extrinsic motivation comes from the outside factors, such as doing something for a reward. There are mixed emotions on whether or not people think intrinsic motivation is better than extrinsic motivation. I personally believe that more people in this world have extrinsic motivation, rather than intrinsic motivation. Intrinsically motivated students are ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Her main focus is the attention provided and the "bragging rights." Extrinsic motivation drives people to do tasks for tangible or other types of rewards, rather than grasping what the task is really about. Another example would be, a student is asked to complete an essay for his or her literature class. The student has no drive or motivation to do so, but reluctantly completes the assignment to avoid punishment or a bad grade. "There is no reason that money can't be an effective motivator, or that grades can't motivate students in school. It's all a matter of individual differences. Different people are motivated in different ways." –Steven Reiss, Psychology Professor at Ohio State University. I agree with both of Mr. Reiss' quotes. He also mentioned that intrinsic motivation couldn't be proved. I sort of agree with that statement as well. I will admit, it is nice to receive a good grade or prize after doing something that you are not crazy about doing. But I also get the intrinsic motives because it is a great feeling to actually want to learn something and strive to do well in it because it is enjoyable in a way. • 12. Motivation, Intrinsic And Extrinsic Motivation Motivation is a very important factor no matter what sport you coach or what the team or athlete goals are. A true coach must be able to understand their athlete and be able to tap into their motivation, maximizing their performance. Chapter four was written about two particular types of motivation, intrinsic and extrinsic. No matter what theory you believe, all theories boil down to these two types of motivation. Knowing the difference between intrinsic and extrinsic motivation, can help you hone in on athletes, their goals, and help them maximize their performance. Succeeding in sports, really boils down to three main characteristics, helping athletes set goals and work towards them, conducting reviews of athlete's performance with the athlete, and conduct team sessions. When it comes towards motivation, the easiest way to get an athlete working towards a goal is to sit down and conduct a goal setting session with them. Every person has goals they want to attain, but may not know how to deploy a plan of action towards achieving those goals. There are many ways to conduct goal setting, some ways are easier than others. One I like to use is a seven step process. The athlete writes down their goal, being very specific, define where you are right now, identify key areas to improve on in order to achieve the goal, identify actions to take and attitudes to help keep moving towards the goal, identify a short term goal to begin momentum, create an image of the goal that an ... • 13. Motivation: Intrinsic vs. Extrinsic Essay Motivation can be defined as the desire or inspiration to carry out specific tasks or to do something. Motivation is required when goals are being set and more so in their execution. In a work setting, motivation can be defined as a process through which individuals choose between alternative forms of behavior with the aim of achieving personal objectives. The goals sought by individuals can be extrinsic or relatively tangible such as monetary rewards and promotion, or intrinsic or intangible such as self esteem or job satisfaction (Armstrong, 2006). Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Extrinsic motivation it is the motivation brought about by what a person is getting from a certain task, rather than interest in the task. An example of extrinsic motivation is when a student who is not particularly interested in math works hard in order to attain a good grade, and in a working person's life, it could be working on a task that is not necessarily interesting to him/her, but that is giving a good amount of financial reward. A good example of intrinsic motivation is working as a volunteer in a children's home because taking care of children is of personal interest and satisfaction, to the person, despite getting no reward. In a classroom setting, it may be clear that most students are more extrinsically motivated to undertake their academic work, even though for some, it could be inherent extrinsic motivation, an example being, a student who understands that studying hard and doing assignments has a bigger reward in the long–term, as they will pass exams and attain good grades. In the same class could be another student who does assignments to avoid sanctions by teachers or parents (Lepper, Corpus and Iyengar, 2005). Both of these examples showcase students who are extrinsically motivated to study even though one appears to be more inherently thoughtful of their own benefit, while the other is doing it just to avoid punishment and is more dependent on the teacher's or parent's reaction. Each of the different jobs conducted within our charitable organization include task identity, each worker must complete their specific portion of work from beginning to end, to then pass it on to the next employee so in the end they are all able to see a tangible result. Each of the jobs within our charitable ogranization include the first three core job characteristics, having skill variety, task identity, as well as a high level of task significance. The five employees working at our charitable agency have the ability to affect the lives of many families, and even the ability to change people's lives and get them the help that they need. Our agency has the ability to affect the lives of other people in a positive way, which leads to intrinsic motivation. Intrinsic motivation occurs when the employees have positive internal feelings that are generated by doing well, rather than being dependent on external factors like incentive pay or compliments from the boss, leading to motivation to work effectively. • 15. Intrinsic Motivation And Student Success The United States of America is known for being a country filled with people of many different ethnic backgrounds. Likewise, the student population in schools is just as diverse as it continues to grow. Lynch (2015) notes that schools are expected to teach their students "how to synthesize cultural differences into their knowledge base" as this will help "facilitate students' personal and professional success in a diverse world" (para. 8). Educators must be able to provide for the diverse needs of students and are expected to equip students with skills that can lead to healthy development as it can affect higher levels of student achievement and students have more opportunities of success in their future. Providing students with tools and skills requires an awareness and acceptance of their ethnic identity. Once students have developed self–acceptance about their ethnic identity, they can begin to feel empowered and motivated to do well. Through cultural empowerment, students of color can develop intrinsic motivation and achieve academic success. Literature Review Effects of Intrinsic Motivation Intrinsic motivation is a key aspect of student success in school. Van den Broeck, Vansteenkiste, and De Witte (2013) define intrinsic motivation as, "the engagement in an activity for its own sake, that is, for the satisfaction and enjoyment experienced during the course of the activity itself" (p. 4). I am one of those individuals who take pride in my job and I do it well but set a part from being a way to afford life's expenses, I'm always in search of my legacy. The legacy I want is embodied in my desire to showcase a body of work that demonstrates the three units of intrinsic motivation that Dan Pink attributes to the most creative workers; "Autonomy, Mastery, and Purpose" (Pink 2009). • 17. Intrinsic And Extrinsic Motivation An organization may have any number of goals, for example, sales growth, market leadership, profit maximization and customer satisfaction. It is clear that an organization will only be successful if employees are performing their tasks at a consistently high level and in line with the company's objectives. To achieve this, organizations have tended to reward employees who demonstrate this high level of performance and behavior (Gatenby et al., 2008). These rewards may be intrinsic and/or extrinsic. Many theorists have critically discussed the core aspects of employee motivation, concluding that intrinsic and extrinsic rewards will only be motivating if these are of value to the individual. Intrinsic motivation lies in the internal satisfaction of an individual – concerning only the enjoyment of the task itself. Whereas extrinsic motivation focuses on external outcomes, in particular financial rewards (Psycnet.apa.org, 2017). In this essay rewards will be regarded as tangible or intangible assets in response to an individual's achievement (Oxford Dictionaries⎪English, 2017), and motivation will focus on the behavioral aspects of why an individual's productivity and performance increases. The extent to which an individual values a certain reward is entirely dependent on their personal preferences and circumstances, as well as the composition of the task. Intrinsic motivation is defined as the behavior of an individual that is being stimulated by internal rewards. The motivation to involve in a behavior arises from within the individual because it is rewarding intrinsically, (Cherry, 2015). According to Ryan & Deci (2000), they distinguish between different types of motivation based on the different reasons or goals that drives an individual to move. This happens not only to humans, or living organisms, but also in nonliving organisms. An example is when a rock which had bounced after it hit the floor while falling down. On the other hand, extrinsic motivation is when a person takes actions knowing that at the end of that action there is a reward waiting for him or her. In this case, the person does it not because thinking about self–development, peace, etc. but about the reward. An example could be that the boy's mother will not let the boy watch his favorite cartoons, until he finishes his homework. Employees need to be motivated to work. Motivation can be defined as the inner force that drives individuals to accomplish personal and organizational goals. Motivation can be either intrinsic or extrinsic. For an individual to be motivated in a work situation there must be a need, which the individual would have to perceive a possibility of satisfying through some reward. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Those that are intrinsically motivated have a bit of advantages over workers who are more predominantly extrinsically motivated. For instance, intrinsically motivated people work on job tasks because they find them enjoyable and interesting. Additionally, there is evidence showing that intrinsic motivation is positively correlated with learning, achievement, perception of competence and self–efficacy. At the same time, it is negatively correlated with anxiety, depression, and frustration. An intrinsically motivated individual will be committed to his or her work to the extent to which the job inherently contains tasks that are inherently rewarding to him or her (Lei, 2010). Drawbacks of Intrinsic Motivation Although intrinsic motivation has numerous benefits, few drawbacks of intrinsic motivation should also be considered as well. An intense form of intrinsic motivation can reach to the point that employees can completely lose track of time and space, completely ignore authority and other important tasks, as well as not having enough time to learn or perform other essential tasks while learning and enjoying a particular academic activity. When performing an enjoyable task, a person can lose track of space or self–awareness. Individuals motivated by intrinsic gratification seek an experience for itself, rather than for anticipated rewards. A study conducted by Lee, Reeve, Xue, and Xiong (2012) showed that intrinsic motivation displays complex neurophysiological activity in which individuals experience an intense psychological process that comes from inherent feelings. When rewards such as candy and toys are used to gain student motivation it can be considered bribery. Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs At the basis of motivation there are many factors that may not been seen right away. One must take a look at physiological reasons for motivation. How do we get students to their fullest potential? Abraham Maslow introduced the concept of self–actualization. This is the idea that we use our abilities to our fullest potential. If we can convince our students that they are capable of fulfilling their goals then they are on their way to self–efficacy. (Elliot, 2000 p.335). Self–actualization is the highest goal to reach in motivation. It is placed at the top of Maslow's pyramid called the hierarchy of needs. This pyramid includes five needs that must be met before self–actualization can develop. The idea of Maslow's hierarchy of needs is that if basic needs are not met, motivation cannot occur. The first need is physiological needs. These are things such as hunger and sleep. If these needs are not met, a student's motivation is dominantly focused on these things. • 30. The Concept Of Intrinsic Motivation Theory In addition to Maslow's self– actualization and moreover, there is self–determination theory (SDT), which suggests that people are motivated to grow and change by innate psychological needs. The theory identifies three key psychological needs that are believed to be both innate and universal: the needs for competence, connectedness and autonomy. The concept of intrinsic motivation plays an important role in self–determination theory. Psychologists Edward Deci and Richard Ryan developed SDT and determined motivation to be that which people tend to be driven by; a need to grow and gain fulfillment. The first consideration of self–determination theory is that people are actively directed toward growth, mastering challenges, and taking on new experiences, which are essential for developing a cohesive sense of self. Explained further by Deci and Ryan (2002), "SDT begins by embracing the assumption that all individuals have natural, innate, and constructive tendencies to develop an ever more elaborated and unified sense of self. That is, we assume people have a primary propensity to forge interconnections among aspects of their own psyches as well as with other individuals and groups in their social worlds." SDT embodies a wide–ranging outline for human motivation and personality. SDT articulates a meta–theory for framing motivational studies, a formal theory that defines intrinsic and a variety of extrinsic motivations. Furthermore, SDT also focuses on how social and ... In terms of extrinsic motivations, I think that I am motivated by praise, reputation, and financial gain. While money is not the most important aspect of a career, I would like to earn a salary that helps me maintain a modest living. Being self–aware, I realize that I want a career where I can help others, which is an intrinsic motivation. This is another reason why I was unhappy in my accounting co–op position, because it was very difficult for me to accomplish tasks that didn't help others. As a result, I wouldn't take a lucrative job offer if it didn't provide me with benevolent job responsibilities. In order to balance my intrinsic and extrinsic motivations, I think that compromise is key. Since life's challenges can interfere with one's morals, I realize that it may be difficult to compromise in certain situations. However, I think that success in the business world ultimately stems from ethical actions, because it will cultivate trust within your customers. As a result, my goal is to work for companies who care about their stakeholders, because the results will pay off in the long run. In this essay, I will illustrates the main point of Daniel Pink, the evidence given in his speech, also the benefits I get from his idea which increase my self– motivation and helps me improve my study experience. According to "The Puzzle of Motivation", the speech given by Daniel Pink (2009) on TED, Pink demonstrates idea that our motivation has many different methods, which well known as extrinsic motivation and intrinsic motivation. But it also could have even more complex motivation methods, such as extrinsic and intrinsic combined motivation, depends on different tasks. Reward could give us positive motivation and improve us work efficiency, however, it is limited on easy job, and people given a clearly direction on how to complete the mission. For creative and complex task, rewards can narrow our views, or even harm. Based on the experiment done by Sam Glucksberg, professor in Princeton University, it proves reward actually can harm to work. In ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 36. Incentive Theories: Intrinsic And Extrinsic Motivation (Edit) Incentive theories: intrinsic and extrinsic motivation[edit] Motivation can be divided into two different theories known as intrinsic (internal or inherent) motivation and extrinsic (external) motivation. Intrinsic motivation[edit] See also: Flow (psychology) and Ikigai Intrinsic motivation has been studied since the early 1970s. Intrinsic motivation is the self–desire to seek out new things and new challenges, to analyze one's capacity, to observe and to gain knowledge.[5] It is driven by an interest or enjoyment in the task itself, and exists within the individual rather than relying on external pressures or a desire for consideration. The phenomenon of intrinsic motivation was first acknowledged within experimental studies of animal behavior. In these studies, it was evident that the organisms would engage in playful and curiosity driven behaviors in the absence of reward. Intrinsic motivation is a natural motivational tendency and is a critical element in cognitive, social, and physical development.[6] Students who are intrinsically motivated are more likely to engage in the task willingly as well ... Usually extrinsic motivation is used to attain outcomes that a person wouldn't get from intrinsic motivation.[11] Common extrinsic motivations are rewards (for example money or grades) for showing the desired behavior, and the threat of punishment following misbehavior. Competition is an extrinsic motivator because it encourages the performer to win and to beat others, not simply to enjoy the intrinsic rewards of the activity. A cheering crowd and the desire to win a trophy are also extrinsic ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 37. Intrinsic and Extrinsic Motivation Essay Intrinsic and Extrinsic Motivation Students are generally classified by two different types of motivation, which are, intrinsic and extrinsic motivation. These two types of motivation are the basis for a student's action and their view of how they perceive schooling and even life. The first type of motivation is intrinsic motivation, which "generally refers to motivation to engage in an activity because that activity is enjoyable and satisfying to do" (Noels, Pelletier, Clément, & Vallerand, pg. 38, 2003). Intrinsic motivation is generally the best type of motivation for students to have, because doing certain activities is not being forced upon them; however, the students are enjoying the activities by themselves. This also leads to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Four Important Age Groups Achieving motivation in the classroom setting is a very difficult task especially since every person is motivated differently and different types of motivation must be applied depending on the age group of the students. There are four major groups that are categorized by age. The first major age group is the primary–grade students, which consist of students in elementary school, Kindergarten through fifth grade. Motivation for this age group can be achieved in a positive physical environment and a psychological atmosphere. Creating a positive physical environment for the students could involve having the classroom decorated with brightly colored signs and posters (Doyle, 1986). This environment would create a friendly atmosphere that would inspire students to be interested in what they are doing in the classroom. In Lumsden's article on students' motivation to learn, she states, "Young children appear to be propelled by curiosity, driven by an intense need to explore, interact with, and make sense of their environment" (1994). This again proves that a primary–grade student's motivation can be created through a positive physical environment. An effective way to create a positive psychological atmosphere, according to Raffini, is that when students give incorrect or incomplete answers, the teacher communicates to them that mistakes are a normal. They are a natural part of the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 38. The Importance Of Intrinsic Motivation At Work As a leader of Sunoco, dealing with this crisis would need to be swift, effective, build sustainability, remove complacency, snakes, egos and above all, introduce intrinsic rewards; especially, when trying to retain employees who truly desire a future with the company. Doing so would involve an approach that requires all hands–on deck, from top to bottom, no exception. Training would not be limited to seniors only, a matter of fact, every employee would be required to receive professional training. Although intrinsic and extrinsic rewards are relevant (mainly intrinsic), it is imperative that all employees recognize the strength of their rewards, which leads to finding something meaningful according to their strength. Organizations experience greater benefits when intrinsic rewards are present; hence, my reason for saying mainly intrinsic. Intrinsic rewards represent the way a person feel, their burning desire to explore avenues of creativity and support and not viewing monetary rewards as a primary benefit. It includes: a sense of meaningfulness, sense of choice, sense of competence and a sense of progress. The following has been said by Thomas in the book 'Intrinsic Motivation at Work:' 1. "All four rewards are accompanied by increased positive emotions about work and by decreased negative emotions." (Thomas, 2009, pg. 68) 2. "Across all organizational levels, people who score higher on the intrinsic rewards report higher satisfaction with their professional development. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 39. Intrinsic Motivation Essay Intrinsic Motivation Sometimes a student can be fascinated in a subject and are eager to learn more without outside influence or help. This kind of a situation is when there exists a large amount of intrinsic incentive to motivate a child. It is when a student enjoys an aspect of an activity enough to be motivated within. An intrinsic incentive could arise in any subject of interest such as dinosaurs, famous people, or far off places. However, topics that are learned in schools today do not arouse children since they find the information useless in their everyday lives (Slavin, 2000). The role of personal interest is crucial in a learning situation. It has been proven that a child who is intrinsically motivated tend to make use ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It is crucial to raise the curiosity of the children and show how the material being taught can be useful to them in their daily lives. Children need a reason for learning. They desire a connection between their personal goals and the knowledge being given in the classroom (White, 1997). Recognizing the students' interests and basing the curriculum on them will provide the teacher with activities that can increase intrinsic motivation to learn. There should be times where students are given a choice about what they will study and in what way they will study the subject (Slavin, 2000). Children need to know that their needs are being met in the lessons and that it provides information of value to them. Participation Having students participate will increase interest as well. Standing in front of the children and lecturing will not stimulate them at all times. There also is a need for hands–on activities, chances to help the teacher, giving input on lessons, working with each other, some other ways getting physically engaged in the lessons. Students love to be helpful and needed in a classroom. It permits them to show they can be useful and can improve self–esteem (Harris, 1991). An interesting curriculum promotes participation. The archenemy of motivation is boredom. Every teacher has a measure of freedom that needs to be used to create a fascinating curriculum to maximize interest (McDaniel, 1987). ...
