understand why murders occur one must understand the motivations present and be able to classify

Both criminology theories both fall under the positivists school of thought, which highlights the
importance of social and cultural influences (Wood & Alleyne, 2010). Neutralization and differential
association theories oppose classical school of thought because they state that killers are not born.
Furthermore, both theories are social process theories and involving the learning process along with
the effect of external influences on individuals behavior (Wood & Alleyne, 2010). Neutralization
theory is actually an extension of differential association theory. Both theories deal with attitudes
and values that influence perceptions, which drives one to criminal acts such as homicide in the case

one of the most frequently investigated topics in criminological research. (Mitchell, Mackenzie
2004). Several studies have attempted to understand the impact of the offenders' race on criminal
sentencing but there has been variation in the results– some of studies concluded race does effect
sentencing regardless of the legal variables; some studies revealed it does not; while other studies
concluded that race does impact sentencing when coupled with other factors. (Pratt 1998).
Research has revealed that sentencing disparities by race are a result of the type of criminal offense
as the variable to the impact on sentencing decisions. The implications of sentencing disparities by
race suggests that minority individuals are targeted more frequently in the criminal justice system.
Accordingly, there is a clear need to explore all possible variables that may create sentencing
disparities for minorities. The current study will fill some of the void of former research by
exploring sentencing disparities among a large sample of gang members and non–gang members
who were sentenced to prison for serious crimes in the state of California. Specifically, the study is
interested in examining whether gang members become targeted by law enforcement personnel

first ever whole town prank. Where they would prank every person in the town with something
scary. Soon this would be an annual thing, but this was the test to see if it would be kept. Every year
the high school seniors have to say goodbye to their parents because there are no colleges in the
town. The seniors have to drive out of the town for college. This year the seniors decided to start
pranking the citizens of the town. Obviously they were pranks that were scary because it is
Halloween after all. They were only allowed to prank people once a year, Halloween day. This was
the only day that people could go all out and scare someone. Everything was acceptable as long as it

INTRODUCTION
The first and most important step is to become aware of gangs, gang members, and their activities.
Individuals armed with this basic knowledge are better able to avoid becoming victims of a gang
attack. To prevent young teens to stay off the streets and to show them that you will die being in a
gang it's dangerous.
BACKGROUND
Why im doing Gang Violence because . Why choose this certain topic because I find it interesting to
research about and has a lot of information on Gang Violence. Its important because Gang violence
is still happening today we might not hear about it alot but, it is still happening.
Narrative Story: Valentia was 13 when she joined a gang Valentia joined the East Side Locos, She
joined a gang because she was tired of getting bullied because she was fat. She would get home she
had no one to chill with. Valentina mom always cooking, cleaning and busy. Valentinas brothers
were drug addicts and her sisters were always with their friends. Valentina jumped people into the
East Side Locos. She Grew up fast. Just because the environment she was living family–wise. Her
dad went to prison when she 6, and a lot of her uncles and everyone got locked up when she was
young for gang stuff. Its like she chose this lifestyle then she going to finally going to do the things

A gang is an organized group with a recognized leader whose activities are either criminal or, at the
very least, threatening to the community. (Walker, 2011) Throughout history there have been some
infamous gangs that have gotten media attention and others that have gone under the radar. One of
the more underground gang structures are prison gangs. The Nuestra Familia may not be in the news

(NF 2011) This divide proved to be an igniter of the gang war between the Mexican Mafia and
Nuestra Familia.
The newly formed Nuestra Familia engaged in prison war against the Mexican Mafia throughout the
70's until the later 1970's when a formal divide was acknowledged between the gangs. After the
formal divide Nuestra Familia began making allies with other Californian Prison gangs like the
Black Guerilla family to defeat a common enemy, The Mexican Mafia. On the other side the
Mexican Mafia teamed up with the Aryan Brotherhood to combat the newly formed Nuestra Familia
and Black Guerilla Family alliance. In order for the Nuestra Familia to gain power in the prisons it
has to control the contraband coming in and out of prison. This is where the foot soldiers, the
Norteños, came in handy. Norteños is a Spanish term for northerners. (Gangland, 2008) The
Norteños operated under leadership from the Nuestra Familia members in prison. The Norteños used
the trafficking of drugs like marijuana, cocaine, heroin, and methamphetamine to gain currency.
They also had successful prostitution and identity theft rings to sustain their dominance in northern
California. This held true, the power of the Nuestra Familia has infinitely grown since its beginning
in the 60's.
The Nuestra Familia kept gaining power until the institution of the federal Racketeer Influenced and
Corrupt Organizations act (RICO).

The Homicides Committed By Ortiz
While neutralization and differential association theory both explain the homicides committed by
Ortiz, the elements of differential association provide a more in–depth explanation. Ortiz learned
from a very young age what attitudes and values were viewed as acceptable by his gang affiliated
parents and peers. Ortiz was jumped into the 500 Block gang when he was only eleven years old. He
was the youngest member of the gang ever allowed in. Considering his role models included his
father, mother, aunt and older brother, which were successful gang members, he did not observe or
experience an adequate exposure to conventional norms. Becoming a gang member was part of the
family business. Many generations before Ortiz served in the gang and it had became a family
tradition that Ortiz was expected to carry on. His friends were also in the gang because they lived in
the same housing project as he did. The housing project that the gang formed due to where Ortiz was
raised. The gang thrived from the poverty and disparity that was present in the housing
development.
The age of onset, duration, intensity and frequency are important in analyzing the influence on Ortiz
's learned behaviors. Differential association states that with overexposure to non–law abiding
attitudes and values, such as the ones present in the 500 Block gang and at the home of Ortiz, comes
the learned behavior that committing homicide is acceptable. Like any other learned behavior, Ortiz

Members of MS–13 display no allegiance to any country, which is evident by their extreme criminal
activity. Members traffic drugs, weapons, and personnel across national boundaries. They receive
instructions and orders from gang members in other countries. They often carry out hits on rival
gangs and business competitors to maintain their goal. MS–13 may not have Ideologies but they do
have some very serious goals. One goal is to become the top gang in the United States, and many
believe they have reached this status. The Gang does not have an agenda and is not pursuing any

Young black and Hispanic men, who are considered members of a lower socio–economic status are
most of the time portrayed as delinquents in popular culture, especially in crime films. Films such as
Talento de Barrio, which stereotypically portrays Hispanic men as gang members and drug dealers.
Training Day, which portrays both black and Hispanic men as gang members and drug dealers.
These two films are great examples to illustrate how the environment, poverty, social class, gender,
race, and ethnicity can be part of many of other factors that creates this idea of social structure. The
negative stereotypes that are reflected in these type of crime films influence how these two minority
groups are perceived in the criminal justice system. Social institutions such as courts and the prison
system reflects the racial disparities that exist among these two groups compared to the dominant
group. It is well known that blacks and Hispanics under the jurisdiction of state and federal

The main character of this film is called Edgar Dinero, which is the drug dealer of the whole caserio.
The members of his gang are like brothers to him because they all grew up together as a family in
