Impact Of Globalization On Indigenous People
Social Studies 10–1
Writing Assignment ll: The Position Paper
Carsten Coursaux
Many Indigenous groups face discrimination and racism in their everyday lives. In the past, many
people believed they were helping the indigenous by talking them away from there land and
assimilating them. Did historical benefit Indigenous peoples throughout the world or did it harm
them? Historical Globalization is a period beginning when Christopher Columbus discovered the
Americas in 1492 and ending after World War ll in 1945. Many Canadians believe it harmed the
indigenous peoples from around the world. Historical Globalization did not benefit Indigenous
groups because it leads to hundreds of thousands of deaths of indigenous peoples, many indigenous

Eventually, the Hutus were angered by the control the Tutsis were given. The Hutus began killing all
Tutsis, this lasted for over 2 months. Between 800,000 and 1,000,000 people were killed. According
to Exploring Globalization over 99% of children witnessed violence. European involvement and
imperialism caused the genocide due the favouring of the more "European," like Tutsis.
The indigenous peoples of most countries view the land as sacred and important. They believe that
the land should be share and cared for. While in European culture power was and is tied in with
land. Land was a type of status and because of this Europe took over land from almost all
indigenous groups from around the world. Many Canadians believe the land should belong to the
people who originally lived there. They used and lived on the land for thousands of year and the
Europeans just took it over. In 1884 representatives of many different countries such as the U.S.,
Germany, and many other European nations divide Africa among themselves without consent from
the aboriginal population. This lead to distress in countries from the legacies of European rule.
Many African nations still feel the legacies set by European forces. 50–60 years ago many African
countries were stilled under control by European countries and did not have control over their land
or government. Africa was just another less important European country. In Canada ,the Canadian
government took the land from the Indigenous

Unity Vs Discourse Analysis
As philosopher John Locke once stated, "All mankind... being all equal and independent, no one
ought to harm another in his life, health, liberty or possessions.". It is clear that Locke valued the
unity of citizens over the arguments that occur between them. Opposed to Locke, another famous
philosopher by the name of Thomas Hobbes believes that only violence is caused without proper
discourse in a society. A group of individuals must collaborate in a time of need to create a
successful and well functioning society. Though debating and critical thinking are also important
when building up a society, unity and participation of citizens is what makes it a reality. Although
the ideological perspective of the source is one of a pro social and political standpoint, it can only
partially be embraced. The ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In relation to the source, the idea that unity should be held to a higher status than discourse is false,
given the more modern example of the recent U.S. election. It is no surprise that many American
citizens were unhappy with the outcome of the recent presidential debate, which declared Donald
Trump as President of the United States. There was no defined sense of unity during this time, as
you cannot have unity if many citizens chose not to cast a vote during this time though many may
complain about the lack of intelligence and the gruesome sense of entitlement that the current ruler
of their country is. There is no way to justify one's negative words if they were not apart of the
decision that caused the final outcome. More historically speaking, the Reign of Terror that declared
the start of the French Revolution in 1793 is another example where discourse between the
government of France could have been a more intelligent route when approaching the situation.
During the Reign of Terror (September 1793–1794) the Committee of Public

China As Most Favored Nation Essay examples
What is the debate on weather or not China should retain favored–nation trading status all about? Is
it really a decision on what is best economically for the United States, and China.
Or is it: the issue of Chinese human rights violations and the fact that if the United States where to
revoke the favored nation status of China it would have a profound negative impact on the U.S.
economy alone.
(+)Most–favored–nation trade status started in the United States as a version of the European
preferential trade system. The Carter Administration first granted most–favored–nation trading
status to China in 1980, following the historic efforts of President Nixon during the 1970's to restore
diplomatic ties. Historically, a significant ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The Chinese government in 1990 issued 280,000 new passports. During the same year, the United
States issued seventeen thousand immigrant visas through consular offices in China, the full number
allowed by American immigration law. The principal restraint to Chinese emigration has arisen not
from Chinese emigration policies but from the unwillingness of other countries to accept
immigrants. Most–favored–nation status for China continues to provide an incentive for further
advancement in this area as well as facilitating the contacts that the Carter administration established
well over a decade ago.
By granting China most–favored–nation trade status the United States has started that long and
difficult process of bringing China out of its international dark ages. In order to live up to the terms
of most–favored–nation trade status China has had to become more open to social and economic
changes. These reforms included more economic freedom, easier access for foreign direct
investments. The economic developments these reforms have been to a main cause for China's
newly increased gross nation product. Over a ten–year period from 1978 to 1988 most–favored–
nation trade status was directly responsible for an annual ten percent growth in China's gross
national product.
China will likely prove to be a significant market for the U.S. in the future. China is one of the
world's fastest growing economies, and with its efforts to reform,

What Caused The Great Depression
The Great Depression was an economic crisis that was happening through Europe and other areas of
the world. It's presence in Germany was horrific with losing over SIX MILLION men out of work.
"The Great Depression was triggered by a collapse in US share prices in 1929." Followed up by the
great impact of 'The Wall Street Crash' happened October 1929 that American economy was
undertaking. Over 10 years, (1929–1939) a lot of male workers were becoming unemployed and
companies were failing with this unemployment. Along with this, many banks throughout all of
Germany started to fail and the loss of money was intense. It continued and the stock market began
to crash and dropping drastically. The cost of living was at stake and there needed to be reasoning
for this disaster. Soon Hitler stepped in and came to power by winning over sides of the Germany
people. Beforehand, Adolf Hitler was a soldier who joined the German Army and served its society
by winning the Iron Cross. Hitler was well–known for a man with dignity, bravery and honour that

Hitler and the Nazi Party to gain more authority but not so much power. The Nazis literally fed off
the German people over the treaty. For France, the treaty failed because it didn't cripple Germany
like they wanted. But the English wanted Germany as trading allies; to give and take resources to
each other. The treaty seemed to keep Germany weak yet strong to stop the spread of communism. It
had also kept the French border safe from any sort of German attacks. In the end, Germany hated

"What were you dreaming?" by Nadine Gordimer
Apartheid and how it affected people
As history moves on, in different countries and even whole continents, movements and regimes
have been formed where groups of people take the power so that they can abuse, denigrate, ignore
and even disparage and underestimate other people base on the colour of their skin or their religion.
One of these systems of government, and probably one of the most influential of modern times, was
the Apartheid which ruled over South Africa since 1948 to 1994. "a system of racial segregation in

walking because the few rands (the local currency) he earned were meant to be for his family, to
help them survive, "I send my pay home every week, s'true's God, so's they can eat, there in the

tries to be the least of a problem for them, "She ask me where I'm going and I say the next place
because they don't like to have you for too far". As the story develops the black man builds
confidence around the white couple (An Englishman and a white South African woman), so they
end up having a conversation about the way the black man has to live under the Apartheid laws.
Although the main characteristic of Apartheid was the racial segregation, in this novel the author
narrates the everyday life of this black man. How he was withdrawn from his home, the home of his
ancestors, taken to a completely different place, to live in a house in worst conditions, where the pay
is less than in those where the whites live. In general, he was forced to a life worst both for him and
his family "I say how it's not fair we had to

Humanitarian Intervention Does Not Become A Smokescreen...
ensure humanitarian intervention does not become "a smokescreen for bullies" (Weiss, 2004: 142).
This is precisely what the ICISS has achieved with its report Responsibility to Protect.
As has been echoed in this essay the ICISS focuses on the notion that with sovereignty comes
responsibility, specifically the responsibility to protect human rights (Evans et al., 2001: 12). Thus, it
is primarily the duty of the state to uphold human rights. However, "Where a population is suffering
serious harm, as a result of internal war, insurgency, repression or state failure, and the state in
question is unwilling or unable to halt or avert it, the principle of non–intervention yields to the
international responsibility to protect" (Evans et al., 2001: XI). It is here were the emphasis is drawn
to those who need the intervention rather than the nation intervening (Weiss, 2004: 138). This is
important, as intervention is no longer a right of the intervening state (i.e. in so far as they can
exploit the situation) but rather a responsibility of states to protect those most vulnerable, hence the
shift from the terminology of 'intervention' to 'responsibility'.
What this framework consequently does is make the correct weigh up between sovereignty and
human rights by creating a connection between the two (Sarkin, 2008: 52). Moreover, this allows for
real and effective action to be undertaken for those who require it. It accomplishes this by a precise
framework for both the criteria for

Members by creating an obligation to guarantee and treat all like services and service suppliers of
the other members equally and without discrimination. However, what is considered a "like" service

Despite the comprehensive nature of the transparency requirements, there are safeguards in place to
protect business confidential information and information associated with essential security
interests. One key feature is that GATS allows for the publication of a new measure simultaneously
or after its entry into force. Together, the obligations and protections form one of the most powerful
general obligations on Members. B. Specific Commitments While the general obligations impose
duties on WTO Members, the specific commitments create flexibility that allows GATS to flourish.
The specific commitments cover market access and national treatment , which permit Members to
determine its own schedules for liberalization of trade in services. The schedules of specific
commitments are made on a sector–by–sector and mode–of–supply basis, and allow Members the
option of making no commitments at all ("unbound"), a partial commitment, or a full commitment
("none"). Members make these specific commitments under GATS through trade negotiations. Once
a Member declares specific commitments in a particular sector, it is prohibited from maintaining any
measure that violates the market–access and national treatment obligations, unless it stipulates the
limitations and restrictions it wishes to maintain. Both market access

Ancient Greek Government Research Paper
HIST 1421 Written Assignment 2
Compare and contrast monarchy, aristocracy, tyranny, oligarchy, and democracy as forms of
government in Ancient Greek city–states.
Introduction:
In ancient Greek, there were several forms of government practiced at one point to the other, but
some of them could not survive within the system because of the calibre of people involved at that
time. A form of government could be any system recognised by the people and which stands as a
guide or rule to protect and prosper a state or nation.
In ancient Greece, many of these systems of government were one time or the other being practiced
by the states or cities. The two largest and most recognised states in Greece who concurrently
practiced these forms of government ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Tyrants were looked upon as leaders who would work for the interests of the ordinary people and
once in power, for example, tyrants often set up building programs to provide jobs and housing for
supporters. This form government is not based on inheritance.
Oligarchy: A system of government where the city or country is ruled by a small group of wealthy
powerful people and they tend to control the military. This form of government was practiced in
Sparta and power is usually shared among members of oligarch. This form of government is like
aristocracy practiced in Athens. Although, Oligarchy was practiced in Athens in the year 404 to
replace democracy after the catastrophic Peloponnesian War (431–404), but it only lasted for a year.
(Cartledge, 2011).
Democracy: A system of the government practiced in Athens where a state is ruled by a citizen
chosen by the decision of masses by vote. Democracy is well recognised this day and it is practiced
by many nations of the world. Democracy has been of old age and is one of the forms of
government that well lasted in Greek especially in Athens. The Spartans concurrently practiced
military rule or what you call dictatorship. It is so far different from democracy as decisions were
made by the military

Motives In OresteiThe House Of Iphigenia?
Murder!? If we murder someone because we're incompetent, does that mean our acts are justified?
What if we murder someone to save an entire nation, are we above the law? How about murder due
to rage, anger, vengeance?. don't know exactly how the law works but do know that certain
murderers are set free. Why? Motives. Motives that are behind the crime.
The play Oresteia, is a play based on tragedies, violence, sufferings and lessons. It was originally
written around 452 BC by Aeschylus, a tragedian Greek writer. It was re–written by David Icke
recently. This paper is based upon the re–written version. Here is a little back story on the play.
Agamemnon, Clytemnestra, Orestes, Iphigenia and Menelaus are all members of The House of
Atreus. Agamemnon was the king of The Greeks, a father and a general. Menelaus, his brother.
Clytemnestra, his wife. Orestes and Iphigenia are his children. The Greeks were at war with The
Trojans and things were tough on Agamemnon. At a point, the pressure was too much to handle, so
Agamemnon seeks help from an Oracle. The Oracle gives him a prophecy stating " By his hands
alone. The child is the price. Fair winds." Obviously, he was to kill his little daughter, Iphigenia, to
win the war and to save a lot of lives in the process. This was not an easy decision for Agamemnon
but due to strong persuasion from his brother– Menelaus, he killed his own daughter, his own flesh.
Turning point, Clytemnestra found out about the prophecy and definitely

The 1988 Free Trade Agreement
To ask why Canada entered the 1988 free trade agreement with the United States of America is to
ask a complicated question that is likely to garner a different answer from each respondent. The best
that one can do when analyzing the multitude of components that led to this agreement is to
eliminate any pre–conceived notions that they may hold about liberalized trade, and attempt to
objectively assess the issues that this country faced in the years leading up to 1988. Free trade
between Canada and the US is likely one of the most contentious issues that our country has ever
faced. This becomes apparent when studying Canadian history throughout the 19th and 20th

He did so without directly consulting the Canadian public. It seems that the economic recessions
witnessed in the mid 70's and early 80's, and the subsequent Macdonald Commission, signalled an
ideological shift in Canada from Keynesian principles of social responsibility, and government
economic intervention, to more austere, free market values associated with economists like Milton
Friedman. This is evident when we analyze the political ascension of 'New Right' figures Margaret
Thatcher in Britain, and Ronald Reagan in the US. Thatcher, noted for her self–described "war on
labour" and Reagan for his "trickle down" economic scheme were both revered by our own Brian
Mulroney, who emulated their efforts, facilitating enhanced corporate sovereignty in Canada. This
admiration that Mulroney had for Reagan may also have been conducive to the timeliness of the
FTA. A parallel can be drawn between theirs, and the relationship that had existed between William
Lyon Mckenzie King and Franklin Delano Roosevelt beginning in 1933, which saw great movement
towards Canada–US economic harmonization. However, it must be noted that Mulroney was
perceived to be "more corporatist than laissez faire". Nonetheless, the rise of the Mulroney
Conservatives provides a microcosm for the neo–liberal political consensus that spawned in this
period. Neo–liberal policies are diametrically opposed to mixed economy approaches, instead

How Did Nationalism Lead To World War I?
Many believed that Nationalism is the reason of World War I. There have been many incidents
involving Nationalism that lead up to World War I. Nationalism is a strong belief that the interests of
a particular nation–state are of primary importance. Shown here below is pieces of evidence
showing the effects of Nationalism that led towards World War I.
Nationalism you could say is a big component to the cause of World War I. For example, the
assassination of the Archduke of Austria–Hungary; Franz Ferdinand and his wife Sophie, Duchess
of Hohenberg. The person responsible for Ferdinand and his wife's death was, Gavrilo Princip, a
man who was just twenty years old when he committed this crime. Princip was in a secret "Black
Hand" society, a nationalist movement that favoured a union between Bosnia–Herzegovina and
Serbia, which on the 28th of June in 1914 Princip and two other men were sent to Sarajevo to
assassinate Ferdinand. This nationalist assassinating the Archduke was one of the main events that

The World System Theory Created By Immanuel Wallerstein
The world system theory created by Immanuel Wallerstein suggests that wealthy countries benefit
from other countries and exploit their resources and citizens. This model recognizes the minimal
benefits that are enjoyed by citizens of low status, as well as the maximal benefits enjoyed by
citizens of high status. This suggests that a country's economic development is based off the
capitalist world system. Wallerstein believes the capitalist world–economy is based on the creation
of surplus appropriation through the expansion of productivity. As a result, this benefits the elite by
increasing profits. "The capitalist world–system is based on a two–fold division of labor in which
different classes and status groups are given differential access to resources within nation states; and
the different nation states are given differential access to goods and services on the world market."
(Elwell 2013) Both of these markets are distorted by power. Wallerstein divides the capitalist world–
economy into three main areas: peripheral, semi–peripheral, and core states. The periphery states are
the least developed and are exploited by the core nations. They provide cheap labour, raw materials,
and agricultural production for core nations. To gain easy and cheap labour, landlords forced rural
workers into a second serfdom on their estates. The semi–periphery is located between the periphery
and the core, and they represent either core regions in decline, or periphery regions attempting to

Power Of The New World
Power can come in many forms. Great power, however, comes in fewer forms. For the most part, a
cycle exists between military power and economic power, and another between economic power,
political power, and development. These are mostly forms of hard power, something physically
tangible, such as an army, a navy, money, land, resources. However, these are not the only types of
power which exist in the world. One of the most underrated sources of power is the power of
homogeny. When the New World was discovered and explored by the British, it was hard for them
to control vast distances because of inter–tribal differences. Now, Britain doesn 't need to worry
about sending troops into settle disputes and ensuring that natives stay under control, because there
are enough people of British descent and mentality now living here and outnumbering the native
population. Britain was able to set up a strong form of soft power around the world through
colonization because it spread British people, their ideologies, and their influence around the world
rather than just troops. In some cases, when natives within British colonies would act up they would
have the troops sent in to restore order, and when more resources were needed, as resources are
often finite, they would send the troops to expand the empire and find new colonies or new
resources within their colonies to extract resources from. This was exactly what happened in Canada
during the 1885 Riel Rebellion, in which troops were

Granting Normal Trade Status to China
Whether to grant China with normal trade status as it enters the WTO (World Trade Organization)
thus eliminating congressional review status under the Jackson–Vanik amendments to the 1974 trade
statute, is an important issue when considering the validity and repercussions that granting normal
trade status would do to US–Chinese relations. It took three United States Presidents, two Chinese
leaders and dozens of negotiators 13 years to clear a path for China to get the chance to join the
World Trade Organization, which could occur if legislation sponsored by President Clinton is passed

the provisions. Last the 135 member countries of the WTO, vote on the prospective countries

19th Century: The Effects Of Imperialism On The Qing Dynasty
Imperialism in the 19th century essentially made the Qing Dynasty into a puppet state through
various means. Economically, many of the foreign powers were violating the Qing's dynastic
sovereignty through the use of the opium trade (Green). Some Foreigners powers had imperialistic
intentions to acquire land from China through land leases These leases essentially made the Qing
Empire a weakened state at the mercy of the foreign powers with the unfair treaties. Culturally, the
Qing was at the mercy of the foreign missionaries as well due to these unfair treaties which allowed

The unfair treaties gave unprecedented rights for foreign powers to exercise. Three of these clauses
in the unfair treaties that were the most damaging was the Fixed Tariff, Extraterritoriality, and most
favoured nation status. Similarly, to the previous paragraph on the opium trade, the fixed tariff
clause allows the foreign powers to dominate their trade and essentially, impose their imperialism on
their economy (Green). The fixed tariff did not allow the Qing to have sovereign control over its
trade. Extraterritoriality allowed all foreigners to be exempted from Qing Laws and essentially, later
will prove problematic with the missionaries (Green). However, the most damaging clause was most
certainly the "most favoured nation" clause. The most favoured nation clause gave the foreign
powers similar concessions if another treaty was made with another country (Green, 4). Most
favoured nation really harmed the Qing Dynasty due to the nature of giving the same deal to a
different country despite not being directly involved with them in any basis. Each of these clauses

The Tiananmen Square Protests Of 1989
Colin Mok Did the Tiananmen Square Protests of 1989 Lead to More Democracy in China? The
Tiananmen Square Protests, otherwise known as the June Fourth incident, was a series of student led
protests and demonstrations in Beijing, China during the spring of 1989. The protests were driven
by goals to eliminate corruption within the Communist Party and promote democratic ideals such as
freedom of speech, freedom of press and social equality. At the height of the protest from June 3–4,
hundreds of thousands of students gathered around Tiananmen Square to protest, prompting military
mobilization and resulting in unprecedented bloodshed. Though deemed by the Chinese government
as a counter revolutionary act, the Tiananmen Square Protest remains an important event in shaping
the political and social state of China today. Not only was the the protest instrumental in exposing
the deep division within China's political leadership, it also revealed that the future of China,
comprised of students and intellectuals, was striving for a more democratic nation. With that being
said, a highly debated question remains as to whether the Tiananmen Square Protest has led to more
democracy in China, and how the event has influenced China's political progress. On the contrary,
the protest had a rather paradoxical impact on China's regime. Rather than ending the rigid regime in
place and bringing rise to democracy, Tiananmen led to the strengthening of the Communist party.

re–opened doors to each other (DoS). Though the relationship of these two economies has been seen
to be somewhat un–easy especially due to their recurring trade wars, there have been some
significant milestones of mutually beneficial relationship.
According to USSB, the trading volume from the year 1971 has significantly been on the rise both
in terms of Exports and imports; up to to levels of US Dollars 532.2 Billion in 2012 from a low of
US Dollars 4.7 in million in 1972.

A brief Economic Trade history by the two nations forms the basis of understanding the major
milestones. The first decade that is between 1970 to 1980 was a period that instigated institution
building that saw the lift of certain barns and barriers of trade. These allowed the flow of
technology, goods and people between the two nations. This was the period when the congress
passed the trade agreement that conferred the contigent Most Favoured Nation (MFN) status on the
Chinese Nation that is on 24th January 1980 (DoS). The figures rose from US Dolars 991.7 Million
(1971) to US Dollars 2.3 Billion in 1979 (USSB).
The second decade that is between the 1980 to 1990, saw reform and growth of the two nations.
This enabled an increased acceleration of America and Chinese transfer of: goods, ideas, values,
technology as well as personnel (DoS). The trade was considered mutually beneficial though the
United States still viewed China as a minor nation. This period experienced a more extensive growth
for China's Gross National Product that increased up to highs of over 15%. The foreign trade
between these two nations had almost tripled to over US Dollars 7 Billion by the close of 1989
(USSB). This was also the

How Does Donald Trump Affect America
Donald Trump will ruin America
The words Donald Trump can elicit many different reactions when said aloud. These can differ from
enthusiasm to the rolling of eyes. Some people just find him outrageously funny due to his actions
and comments. And they are hilarious, aren't they? I mean how funny is it to see a balding
businessman in an appallingly bad toupee claiming that he needs Global warming to keep himself
warm in chilly New York. Or casually joking about the size of his privates and claiming that his
"...twitter is so powerful..." that he can force the truth out of his enemies. How hilarious is that? Just
like his casually racist comments towards Mexican people, calling them rapists and criminals. Or
promoting violence, telling his supporters at ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Despite his incompetence regarding political affairs, he has expressed strong views on certain
policies and ideals. Some of these policies that he has favour the rich over the poor and could
worsen poverty in the United States. An example of this is his proposed medical policies. He has
publicly favoured the idea of private healthcare and health insurance, which could lead to patients
with pre–existing medical conditions unable to afford health care. Trump is also very public with his
criticism of immigration and his racist views could cause legal immigrants in America to be targeted
by his followers. There has already been an incident in Boston where two men assaulted a Mexican
homeless man stating, "Trump was right...All these illegal immigrants need to be deported." His
future policies could also potentially place all immigrant families at risk of being victims of ethnic
violence or being deported from the country. Furthermore, Donald Trump's own racist and
misogynistic views could devastate improvements in equality, as he has expressed a wish to
overturn the legalisation of gay marriage which would be keeping apart people in love because of

What Was A Communist Government?
1. What is a communist government?
A communist government is facilitated with that of equality throughout the working classes, where
everyone has equal opportunities. It's a system of government where the government operates and
plans the economy; it is referred to as single party or dominant party, where it follows the ideology
of Karl Marx. It is the opposite kind of government to a democracy. It started in Russia with Karl
Marx where each person was treated under the same circumstances such as pay. It was developed to
create an equal and fair society government known as the social party where no one was favoured. It
was unable to perform efficiently as it slowly developed into an unfair situation where people where

Vietnam took the opportunity to develop its own form of government, led by Ho Chi Mihn, until
after the war where the allies had divided Vietnam giving South Vietnam back to the French and
north Vietnam to the non–communist Chinese. However due to the poorly treated state North

4. In what ways did the United States support the French in Vietnam?
The US supported the French colonies by joining them in the resistance of communism spreading
from China to North Vietnam, where it would then spread throughout South Vietnam as well. This
meant they would send needed soldiers and protection to Vietnam in order to strengthen their
defences. They agreed to help the French try

International Legal Framework After World War II
2 Rationales for Trade and Investment Treaties
(a) drawbacks of international legal framework after world war II
After World War II, there were two drawbacks referring to the legal framework of international trade
and investment. Firstly, although the GATT did exist as a response of the failure of the International
Trade Organization ('ITO'), it did not have a formal organizational structure to conduct its function.
Besides, the GATT only covered goods and yet services, although the latter was becoming more
vital for countries' economies. In international investment, there was no applicable law protecting
the interest of foreign investment, for example, how to regulate monetary transfer from host
countries, and how to calculate compensation upon nationalisation. Albeit customary international
law did exist, it did not accommodate the needs of multinational enterprises. Moreover, it was nearly
impossible to change customary international law.
The next drawbacks related to the enforcement mechanism. Even though the GATT had operated
dispute settlement system, there were significant delays of enforcement process due to the practice
of consensus decision–making that could prevent the adoption of the GATT report. In international
investment, the disagreement between industrialised countries and newly independent countries was
not properly resolved because there was no appropriate enforcement mechanism. In particular,
foreign investors were difficult to pursue claims

What Were the Causes of the American Civil War? Essay
What were the causes of the American Civil War? The Civil War happened due to the many
differences between the North and the South. For example economic, social, cultural and political
differences. These all helped lead America to a Civil War. But to an extent, the most important cause
was the fact there were many disagreements with states' rights versus federal rights. It was clear that
there was always going to be a conflict between the federal government and the state governments
because the federal government has the power to discuss bills and proposals for new laws. Whereas
the state governments only has power to deal with policing, education and health care. And issues
like slavery created tension between the two because the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

And the South's commitment to essential production of goods and slave labour was reflected in the
region0s distinctive cult of honour, and its defence of social inequality. The South heavily relied on
slavery to keep their economy stable, although not their only source of money, but by abolishing
slavery and making it illegal it would damage their economy quite badly. And so this caused a lot of
tension between the North and South because they were very different economically. The South is
much more agricultural, and is reliant upon exports as well. The North on the other hand is in
complete contrast to the South. The North industrialised very fast and many people of poor
background and some African–American succeeded and made a lot of money. It isn't very clear that
if they had lived in the South if they could have achieved this much success, but those in the North
faced a lot less discrimination compared to the South. "Because the economics of the dynamic
industrializing North and the static agrarian South were incompatible, the two societies were on a
collision course that led inexorably to war" (http://civilwartalk.com/threads/historians–evolving–

Essay about World Trade Organization
Although there are many famous riots and controversies connected to the World Trade Organization
(WTO), most American citizens don't know what the WTO actually is or what it does. Because
there's so much the average person doesn't understand, we need to look at the background of the
WTO before we can discuss any further details; then we will look at possible explanations of why
people protest, and finally we'll focus on whether or not any protests were justified.
The World Trade Organization is designed to create the rules involved with trade. These trading
rules include all countries, not just the US, and can therefore be a little tricky at times. "The

in ensuring market access commitments are implemented and maintained" (Hoekman, B. 2001).
They restrict tariffs from going up and down too much. If tariff changes happen that don't coincide
with the WTO guidelines, the government usually makes it their duty to change the policies.
Because the WTO is an intergovernmental agreement they can handle their own cases, unlike
private organizations, which do not have the same legal footing.
Fourth, transparency is important for the WTO because it "requires members to publish their trade
regulations, to establish and maintain institutions allowing for the review of administrative decisions
affecting trade, to respond to requests for information by other members, and to notify changes in
trade policies to the WTO" (Hoekman, B. 2001). This includes trade regulations and establishing
institutions that allow for change. Transparency has many benefits, including reduced pressure on
the dispute settlement system. If one country complains about another, meetings can be arranged to

Martin Luther King Jr And Hitler Comparison Essay
Compare and Contrast: Martin Luther King Jr and Adolf Hitler

Two of the most significant leaders in modern history were Martin Luther King Jr and Adolf Hitler.
Although both figures left their mark on their respective nations' political, social and economic
landscape, one is revered while the other remembered with disdain and horror. This essay will
compare and contrast key characteristics that were and are central to King and Hitler's rise to
prominence and memory. Some observations will be based on the speeches in the 1963 March on
Washington for the former and 1953 propaganda film 'Triumph of the Will' for the latter's
references. Both Martin Luther King Jr and Adolf Hitler had positive body language. When
speaking, they stood up straight, maintained eye contact with the audience and projected their voices
really well, which increased the significance of the speech topics even more. However, the way they
were filmed in the original sources gave two different impressions. King's body language were more

How Did George Washington Influence The Government
George Washington saw the many flaws in our government . He became the president in 1789 and
ran for two terms; he set the precedent of not running for a third term. He elected men into his
cabinet such as Alexander Hamilton and Thomas Jefferson. George Washington anticipated that the
government would be broken if we formed political parties, became involved in foreign wars, and
stopped listening to the Constitution. George Washington foresaw that forming parties based on
political belief would separate the nation. He thought that it would turn the people against each other
since they had such different political views. George Washington wrote, "...as this is the point of
your political fortress against which the batteries of internal and external enemies will be most
constantly and actively...directed..." Washington is saying that the internal enemies would be

The Battle Of Trafalgar Between France And Great Britain...
A number of criteria ought to be present for free trade (FT) and economic globalization (EG) to
occur. These being the open rules, enforcer, freedom of navigation, and international money. Firstly,
there should be rules and regulations that participants should commonly abide. Secondly, there
should be actor(s) or dominant power(s) who would police and ensure that the rules of FT and EG
are enforced. Thirdly, these also necessitates free and safe navigation. Parties involved need to be
assured that their products will arrive to their destination, else, no one would join free trade.
Fourthly, international money (e.g. currency) which everyone recognizes for its notable value. The
Battle of Trafalgar between France and Great Britain (GB) that resulted to the latter's domination of
the former made it clear to every European states who is the commanding power in Europe. This
battle's significance lies on the fact that it assured GB's naval supremacy and the beginning of
British hegemony (from late 19th century till early 20th century) which was the first example of
regional FT. This example is far from exemplary and may not be the most ideal to convince sceptics
of FT of its merit but, like any other organization, FT itself got better through time. To begin with,
the adoption of the gold standards in 1844 by GB when its economic power was worldly
acknowledged, made it possible for an international currency to be used. It successfully convinced

The Fate Of 's Export Under Solia 's New Generalized...
The fate of Taamail 's export under Solia 's new generalized system of preferences
1. Introduction
The principle of special economic needs for the least developed countries (LCDs) was recognized in
the GATT 1965, where the preferential treatment of such countries in matters of trade, tariffs and
other legal measures was deemed a necessary vehicle to both trade liberalizations and also for
enhancing the economic development of the LCDs (Mckenzie, 2005). Consequently, the World
Trade Organization (WTO) has recognized the need for the preferential treatment of the developing
countries in matters of trade as provided for under the Article I:1 of the General Agreement on
Tariffs and Trade 1994 (GATT 1994), targeting the most–favoured–nations (MFN) (GATT, 1979).
Therefore, the World Trade Organization (WTO) regulatory context relevant in this case goes back
to the Generalized System of Preferences as established under the Enabling clause of the GATT,
allowing for the preferential treatment of the developing countries over their developed counterparts
in matters of trade relationships (EC, 2004). The relevant legal issue is whether the recent change in
the Generalized System of Preferences (GSP) as developed by Solia are in violation of Article I and
Article II of the GAAT of 1994.
The most relevant legal issue under this case however, is the existing inconsistency between the
provisions of Article I: 1 of the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade 1994 (GATT 1994), as

The British Position 's Position On The Morality Continuum
A major difference between 1956 and the 1930s was the British position's position on the morality
continuum. The Anti–Appeasement position championed by Churchill during the 1930s had aged
very well. By 1956 the horrors of world war two were still fresh memories for all adult Britons and
Churchill's historical writings seemed to cement this view.
At a time when the evils of imperialism were becoming more apparent and resented a great deal of
British pride was sourced from standing up to fascism in 1939 and ultimately winning.
Illegal, unilateral military intervention in Suez on the back of a legal nationalisation of a foreign
owned asset had all the hallmarks of a colonist power's show of strength. British national interest
was undoubtedly threatened by the loss of oil, spread of Arab nationalism and (more questionably)
the resulting spread of communism throughout the region but the moral high ground of a nation
defending itself against fascism was more difficult to conjure up.
By drawing parallels between (specifically) 1938 and the nationalization crisis a sense of moral
authority was gained.
Britain could no longer hope to act unilaterally with success. The support (active and passive) from
the commonwealth and the USA was no longer present.
Britain viewed Nasser as a reckless dictator who had potential to massively threaten western power
in the Middle East, the power of Britain and ultimately tip the balance in the cold war.
The decision not to pursue further

King Alfred Research Paper
King Alfred of Wessex was probably the best known of all "Anglo–Saxon rulers". And Alfred's
reputation still stands high with historians, though few would now want to follow following,
claiming him as 'the most perfect character in history.'
Alfred is someone who has had greatness thrust upon him. How and why did he acquire his glowing
reputation, and how does it stand up today? There can be no doubt that Alfred's reign was
significant, both for the direction of the country's development and the fortunes of his descendants.
Alfred was the only surviving Anglo–Saxon province. Alfred nearly succumbed to the Vikings, but
kept his nerve and won a decisive victory at the battle of Edington in 879. He then paved the way
for the future unity of England, who conquered the remaining areas held by the Vikings in the east
and north, so that by the mid–tenth century, the England we are familiar with, was ruled as one
country for the first time. Alfred studied, and even translated from Latin into Old English, certain
works that were regarded as "most necessary for all men to know". Alfred also tried to put these
principles into practice, for instance, he became convinced that those in authority in church or ...

Canada 's Health Care System
Canada's health care system is one that formed in the 1950s and 60s, also known as Medicare. It is a
system that Canada as a nation often takes pride in, as it is predominantly public with basic health
care is available to all citizens, and has some aspects of the private system incorporated as well.
Health care often occurs in terms that compare public versus private health care systems. After a
thorough analysis of private health care associated with neo–conservatism, and public health care
associated with welfare state liberalism, I assert that the more beneficial option for Canada would be
public health care. Public health care is very accessible, and universal, therefore allowing the
individual to have access to health care nation–wide. As well, it is significantly more affordable than
private health care when concerning the average Canadian citizen. Although, it can be argued that
private healthcare is a better option for Canada because it would improve the quality of health care,
offering quicker access it, and it reduces the amount of stress put on the upper class in paying for
public health care. However, privatization acts as a barrier to providing universal and quality health
care on an equitable basis.
To understand why public health care is a more fitting choice for Canada, one must understand the
relationship between the welfare state and public health care, and why liberals advocate for public
health care. In Canada, public health care is a system of which

Essay on Jeffersonian Vs. Jacksonian Democracy in the US
How might we distinguish 'Jacksonian democracy' from 'Jeffersonian democracy'?
A period of nearly 30 years are associated with the Presidency of Jefferson, his successors and his
'democracy' from 1801 until Andrew Jackson's election in 1828. A vision of a united, equal America,
limited government and natural aristocracy ruled the Jeffersonian style of democracy. However, with
the election of Andrew Jackson in 1828, a new form of democracy, differentiating in multiply ways
to the Jeffersonian America, engulfed the American political and social scene. Jacksonian

Glenn E. Hoover submits a slightly different approach, suggesting that Jefferson was not a supporter
of elitism but instead "he recognized that there was among men, a natural aristocracy of ability.
However, these differences...did not justify any unequal treatment". Therefore, it can be seen that
Jeffersonian democracy did not favour the privileged but recognised their existence within society,
acknowledging the ability for people to transcend social classes through their own efforts.
Jackson conversely championed, as Edward Pessen put it, the common 'white' man and was
distrustful of the Jeffersonian natural aristocracy. Jackson was known to have had a simple rural
background, the first president to be known by a nickname and the first President to have achieved
the most prestigious office in America without rising through high office at Washington. All these
factors strengthened the idea that his democracy favoured the common man, something the
Jeffersonian could not claim. To Jacksonians, the country's future lay in the hands of the common
'white' man, an idea supported through the fact that "the percentage of [the] eligible population that
voted...[averaged] sixty–nine percent...Hence, from Jackson forward presidents could claim...they

The first reading published on differencebetween.net focused on the two interpretations of

history of voting in Australia. Both readings were informative but I personally favoured the first
reading 'Difference between participatory democracy and representative democracy' because of its
succinct description. As someone who isn't very politically involved or aware, it was beneficial to

Only in the last century has voting become more accessible to minorities and women, before that it
only catered to the elite. The article suggests that if we want to be liberated from the current

In the second reading, 'The distinctiveness of Australian democracy', John Hirst tells his
international students a secret, "Australians are very obedient people." His use of anecdote as an
opening to his piece is immediately engaging. He notes that Australia was the first nation to enforce
the mandatory wearing of seatbelts and compulsory breath testing for drivers of motor vehicles to

Essay on Impacts of WTO on Trading Countries
Impacts of WTO on Trading Countries
International trading has had its delays and road blocks, which has created a number of problems for
countries around the world. Countries, fighting with one another to get the better deal, create tariffs
and taxes to maximize their profit. This fighting leads to bad relationships with competing countries,
and the little producing countries get the short end of this stick. Regulations and organizations have
been established to help everyone get the best deal, such as the World Trade Organization (WTO),
but not everyone wants help, especially from an organization that seems to help only the big
countries and those they want to trade with. This paper will be discussing ... Show more content on

There are five main rules that the WTO depends on to operate smoothly on a daily basis and they are
as follows: nondiscrimination, reciprocity, enforceable commitments, transparency, and safety
valves. (Paullier)
First, we will look at nondiscrimination. There are two main concepts to understand when looking at
the nondiscrimination rule: Most Favored Nation (MFN) and National Treatment Principle (NTP).
The MFN involves one country, usually a larger, more developed country, deciding that it wants to
trade with another country, usually a little country, and give them certain benefits that other
countries might not get because the larger country doesn't like them as well or had bad relationships
with them. For example, if the Japan decided that it wanted to trade with Australia, and didn't want
as much from China, it could make exporting and importing more beneficial to Australia by
overlooking tariffs and taxes it might impose on China. This would negate the US. National
Treatment Principle, which can best be explained in terms of goods being treated equally, regardless
of the origin of the product. For instance, if Texas wanted to sell its beef to Idaho and so did
Australia; Idaho wouldn't be able to impose a tax on the beef from Texas unless it imposed the same
tax on the ones from Australia. This rule it supposed to keep trading fair between nations.
Second, reciprocity is an

Impact Of Globalization On Indigenous People

  • 1. Impact Of Globalization On Indigenous People Social Studies 10–1 Writing Assignment ll: The Position Paper Carsten Coursaux Many Indigenous groups face discrimination and racism in their everyday lives. In the past, many people believed they were helping the indigenous by talking them away from there land and assimilating them. Did historical benefit Indigenous peoples throughout the world or did it harm them? Historical Globalization is a period beginning when Christopher Columbus discovered the Americas in 1492 and ending after World War ll in 1945. Many Canadians believe it harmed the indigenous peoples from around the world. Eventually, the Hutus were angered by the control the Tutsis were given. The Hutus began killing all Tutsis, this lasted for over 2 months. Between 800,000 and 1,000,000 people were killed. According to Exploring Globalization over 99% of children witnessed violence. European involvement and imperialism caused the genocide due the favouring of the more "European," like Tutsis. The indigenous peoples of most countries view the land as sacred and important. They believe that the land should be share and cared for. While in European culture power was and is tied in with land. Land was a type of status and because of this Europe took over land from almost all indigenous groups from around the world. Many Canadians believe the land should belong to the people who originally lived there. They used and lived on the land for thousands of year and the Europeans just took it over. In 1884 representatives of many different countries such as the U.S., Germany, and many other European nations divide Africa among themselves without consent from the aboriginal population. This lead to distress in countries from the legacies of European rule. Many African nations still feel the legacies set by European forces. 50–60 years ago many African countries were stilled under control by European countries and did not have control over their land or government. • 3. Unity Vs Discourse Analysis As philosopher John Locke once stated, "All mankind... being all equal and independent, no one ought to harm another in his life, health, liberty or possessions.". It is clear that Locke valued the unity of citizens over the arguments that occur between them. Opposed to Locke, another famous philosopher by the name of Thomas Hobbes believes that only violence is caused without proper discourse in a society. A group of individuals must collaborate in a time of need to create a successful and well functioning society. Though debating and critical thinking are also important when building up a society, unity and participation of citizens is what makes it a reality. Although the ideological perspective of the source is one of a pro social and political standpoint, it can only partially be embraced. The ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In relation to the source, the idea that unity should be held to a higher status than discourse is false, given the more modern example of the recent U.S. election. It is no surprise that many American citizens were unhappy with the outcome of the recent presidential debate, which declared Donald Trump as President of the United States. There was no defined sense of unity during this time, as you cannot have unity if many citizens chose not to cast a vote during this time though many may complain about the lack of intelligence and the gruesome sense of entitlement that the current ruler of their country is. There is no way to justify one's negative words if they were not apart of the decision that caused the final outcome. More historically speaking, the Reign of Terror that declared the start of the French Revolution in 1793 is another example where discourse between the government of France could have been a more intelligent route when approaching the situation. Is it really a decision on what is best economically for the United States, and China. Or is it: the issue of Chinese human rights violations and the fact that if the United States where to revoke the favored nation status of China it would have a profound negative impact on the U.S. economy alone. (+)Most–favored–nation trade status started in the United States as a version of the European preferential trade system. The Carter Administration first granted most–favored–nation trading status to China in 1980, following the historic efforts of President Nixon during the 1970's to restore diplomatic ties. During the same year, the United States issued seventeen thousand immigrant visas through consular offices in China, the full number allowed by American immigration law. The principal restraint to Chinese emigration has arisen not from Chinese emigration policies but from the unwillingness of other countries to accept immigrants. Most–favored–nation status for China continues to provide an incentive for further advancement in this area as well as facilitating the contacts that the Carter administration established well over a decade ago. By granting China most–favored–nation trade status the United States has started that long and difficult process of bringing China out of its international dark ages. In order to live up to the terms of most–favored–nation trade status China has had to become more open to social and economic changes. These reforms included more economic freedom, easier access for foreign direct investments. The economic developments these reforms have been to a main cause for China's newly increased gross nation product. Over a ten–year period from 1978 to 1988 most–favored– nation trade status was directly responsible for an annual ten percent growth in China's gross national product. China will likely prove to be a significant market for the U.S. in the future. China is one of the world's fastest growing economies, and with its efforts to reform, ... • 13. Humanitarian Intervention Does Not Become A Smokescreen... ensure humanitarian intervention does not become "a smokescreen for bullies" (Weiss, 2004: 142). This is precisely what the ICISS has achieved with its report Responsibility to Protect. As has been echoed in this essay the ICISS focuses on the notion that with sovereignty comes responsibility, specifically the responsibility to protect human rights (Evans et al., 2001: 12). Thus, it is primarily the duty of the state to uphold human rights. However, "Where a population is suffering serious harm, as a result of internal war, insurgency, repression or state failure, and the state in question is unwilling or unable to halt or avert it, the principle of non–intervention yields to the international responsibility to protect" (Evans et al., 2001: XI). It is here were the emphasis is drawn to those who need the intervention rather than the nation intervening (Weiss, 2004: 138). This is important, as intervention is no longer a right of the intervening state (i.e. in so far as they can exploit the situation) but rather a responsibility of states to protect those most vulnerable, hence the shift from the terminology of 'intervention' to 'responsibility'. What this framework consequently does is make the correct weigh up between sovereignty and human rights by creating a connection between the two (Sarkin, 2008: 52). Moreover, this allows for real and effective action to be undertaken for those who require it. It accomplishes this by a precise framework for both the criteria for ... Ancient Greek Government Research Paper HIST 1421 Written Assignment 2 Compare and contrast monarchy, aristocracy, tyranny, oligarchy, and democracy as forms of government in Ancient Greek city–states. Introduction: In ancient Greek, there were several forms of government practiced at one point to the other, but some of them could not survive within the system because of the calibre of people involved at that time. A form of government could be any system recognised by the people and which stands as a guide or rule to protect and prosper a state or nation. This form of government was practiced in Sparta and power is usually shared among members of oligarch. This form of government is like aristocracy practiced in Athens. Although, Oligarchy was practiced in Athens in the year 404 to replace democracy after the catastrophic Peloponnesian War (431–404), but it only lasted for a year. (Cartledge, 2011). Democracy: A system of the government practiced in Athens where a state is ruled by a citizen chosen by the decision of masses by vote. Democracy is well recognised this day and it is practiced by many nations of the world. What if we murder someone to save an entire nation, are we above the law? How about murder due to rage, anger, vengeance?. don't know exactly how the law works but do know that certain murderers are set free. Why? Motives. Motives that are behind the crime. The play Oresteia, is a play based on tragedies, violence, sufferings and lessons. It was originally written around 452 BC by Aeschylus, a tragedian Greek writer. It was re–written by David Icke recently. This paper is based upon the re–written version. Here is a little back story on the play. Agamemnon, Clytemnestra, Orestes, Iphigenia and Menelaus are all members of The House of Atreus. Agamemnon was the king of The Greeks, a father and a general. Menelaus, his brother. Clytemnestra, his wife. Orestes and Iphigenia are his children. The Greeks were at war with The Trojans and things were tough on Agamemnon. At a point, the pressure was too much to handle, so Agamemnon seeks help from an Oracle. The Oracle gives him a prophecy stating " By his hands alone. The child is the price. Fair winds." Obviously, he was to kill his little daughter, Iphigenia, to win the war and to save a lot of lives in the process. This was not an easy decision for Agamemnon but due to strong persuasion from his brother– Menelaus, he killed his own daughter, his own flesh. The 1988 Free Trade Agreement To ask why Canada entered the 1988 free trade agreement with the United States of America is to ask a complicated question that is likely to garner a different answer from each respondent. The best that one can do when analyzing the multitude of components that led to this agreement is to eliminate any pre–conceived notions that they may hold about liberalized trade, and attempt to objectively assess the issues that this country faced in the years leading up to 1988. It seems that the economic recessions witnessed in the mid 70's and early 80's, and the subsequent Macdonald Commission, signalled an ideological shift in Canada from Keynesian principles of social responsibility, and government economic intervention, to more austere, free market values associated with economists like Milton Friedman. This is evident when we analyze the political ascension of 'New Right' figures Margaret Thatcher in Britain, and Ronald Reagan in the US. Thatcher, noted for her self–described "war on labour" and Reagan for his "trickle down" economic scheme were both revered by our own Brian Mulroney, who emulated their efforts, facilitating enhanced corporate sovereignty in Canada. This admiration that Mulroney had for Reagan may also have been conducive to the timeliness of the FTA. A parallel can be drawn between theirs, and the relationship that had existed between William Lyon Mckenzie King and Franklin Delano Roosevelt beginning in 1933, which saw great movement towards Canada–US economic harmonization. However, it must be noted that Mulroney was perceived to be "more corporatist than laissez faire". Nonetheless, the rise of the Mulroney Conservatives provides a microcosm for the neo–liberal political consensus that spawned in this period. • 27. The World System Theory Created By Immanuel Wallerstein The world system theory created by Immanuel Wallerstein suggests that wealthy countries benefit from other countries and exploit their resources and citizens. This model recognizes the minimal benefits that are enjoyed by citizens of low status, as well as the maximal benefits enjoyed by citizens of high status. This suggests that a country's economic development is based off the capitalist world system. Wallerstein believes the capitalist world–economy is based on the creation of surplus appropriation through the expansion of productivity. As a result, this benefits the elite by increasing profits. "The capitalist world–system is based on a two–fold division of labor in which different classes and status groups are given differential access to resources within nation states; and the different nation states are given differential access to goods and services on the world market." (Elwell 2013) Both of these markets are distorted by power. Wallerstein divides the capitalist world– economy into three main areas: peripheral, semi–peripheral, and core states. The periphery states are the least developed and are exploited by the core nations. They provide cheap labour, raw materials, and agricultural production for core nations. To gain easy and cheap labour, landlords forced rural workers into a second serfdom on their estates. • 29. Power Of The New World Power can come in many forms. Great power, however, comes in fewer forms. For the most part, a cycle exists between military power and economic power, and another between economic power, political power, and development. These are mostly forms of hard power, something physically tangible, such as an army, a navy, money, land, resources. However, these are not the only types of power which exist in the world. One of the most underrated sources of power is the power of homogeny. When the New World was discovered and explored by the British, it was hard for them to control vast distances because of inter–tribal differences. Now, Britain doesn 't need to worry about sending troops into settle disputes and ensuring that natives stay under control, because there are enough people of British descent and mentality now living here and outnumbering the native population. Britain was able to set up a strong form of soft power around the world through colonization because it spread British people, their ideologies, and their influence around the world rather than just troops. In some cases, when natives within British colonies would act up they would have the troops sent in to restore order, and when more resources were needed, as resources are often finite, they would send the troops to expand the empire and find new colonies or new resources within their colonies to extract resources from. It took three United States Presidents, two Chinese leaders and dozens of negotiators 13 years to clear a path for China to get the chance to join the World Trade Organization, which could occur if legislation sponsored by President Clinton is passed by a skeptic legislative branch, that has relied on the annual review of trade status as a means to police the ... The fixed tariff did not allow the Qing to have sovereign control over its trade. Extraterritoriality allowed all foreigners to be exempted from Qing Laws and essentially, later will prove problematic with the missionaries (Green). However, the most damaging clause was most certainly the "most favoured nation" clause. • 35. The Tiananmen Square Protests Of 1989 Colin Mok Did the Tiananmen Square Protests of 1989 Lead to More Democracy in China? The Tiananmen Square Protests, otherwise known as the June Fourth incident, was a series of student led protests and demonstrations in Beijing, China during the spring of 1989. The protests were driven by goals to eliminate corruption within the Communist Party and promote democratic ideals such as freedom of speech, freedom of press and social equality. At the height of the protest from June 3–4, hundreds of thousands of students gathered around Tiananmen Square to protest, prompting military mobilization and resulting in unprecedented bloodshed. Though deemed by the Chinese government as a counter revolutionary act, the Tiananmen Square Protest remains an important event in shaping the political and social state of China today. Not only was the the protest instrumental in exposing the deep division within China's political leadership, it also revealed that the future of China, comprised of students and intellectuals, was striving for a more democratic nation. With that being said, a highly debated question remains as to whether the Tiananmen Square Protest has led to more democracy in China, and how the event has influenced China's political progress. On the contrary, the protest had a rather paradoxical impact on China's regime. Rather than ending the rigid regime in place and bringing rise to democracy, Tiananmen led to the strengthening of the Communist party. The protests resulted ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

International Legal Framework After World War II 2 Rationales for Trade and Investment Treaties (a) drawbacks of international legal framework after world war II After World War II, there were two drawbacks referring to the legal framework of international trade and investment. Firstly, although the GATT did exist as a response of the failure of the International Trade Organization ('ITO'), it did not have a formal organizational structure to conduct its function. Besides, the GATT only covered goods and yet services, although the latter was becoming more vital for countries' economies. In international investment, there was no applicable law protecting the interest of foreign investment, for example, how to regulate monetary transfer from host countries, and how to calculate compensation upon nationalisation. Albeit customary international law did exist, it did not accommodate the needs of multinational enterprises. Moreover, it was nearly impossible to change customary international law. The next drawbacks related to the enforcement mechanism. Even though the GATT had operated dispute settlement system, there were significant delays of enforcement process due to the practice of consensus decision–making that could prevent the adoption of the GATT report. In international investment, the disagreement between industrialised countries and newly independent countries was not properly resolved because there was no appropriate enforcement mechanism. It was clear that there was always going to be a conflict between the federal government and the state governments because the federal government has the power to discuss bills and proposals for new laws. And so this caused a lot of tension between the North and South because they were very different economically. The South is much more agricultural, and is reliant upon exports as well. The North on the other hand is in complete contrast to the South. The North industrialised very fast and many people of poor background and some African–American succeeded and made a lot of money. Essay about World Trade Organization Although there are many famous riots and controversies connected to the World Trade Organization (WTO), most American citizens don't know what the WTO actually is or what it does. Because there's so much the average person doesn't understand, we need to look at the background of the WTO before we can discuss any further details; then we will look at possible explanations of why people protest, and finally we'll focus on whether or not any protests were justified. The World Trade Organization is designed to create the rules involved with trade. These trading rules include all countries, not just the US, and can therefore be a little tricky at times. "The WTO establishes a framework for trade policies, it ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... and Staiger, R. W. 2002). An example might be when France meets with Spain to negotiate terms for their blossoming lily industry; each country might have a few trade concessions in mind and work to create a balance between them. Third, we will consider how "enforceable commitments are crucial in ensuring market access commitments are implemented and maintained" (Hoekman, B. 2001). They restrict tariffs from going up and down too much. If tariff changes happen that don't coincide with the WTO guidelines, the government usually makes it their duty to change the policies. Because the WTO is an intergovernmental agreement they can handle their own cases, unlike private organizations, which do not have the same legal footing. Fourth, transparency is important for the WTO because it "requires members to publish their trade regulations, to establish and maintain institutions allowing for the review of administrative decisions affecting trade, to respond to requests for information by other members, and to notify changes in trade policies to the WTO" (Hoekman, B. 2001). This includes trade regulations and establishing institutions that allow for change. Transparency has many benefits, including reduced pressure on the dispute settlement system. • 54. Martin Luther King Jr And Hitler Comparison Essay Compare and Contrast: Martin Luther King Jr and Adolf Hitler By Shada Fakhiranisa Two of the most significant leaders in modern history were Martin Luther King Jr and Adolf Hitler. Although both figures left their mark on their respective nations' political, social and economic landscape, one is revered while the other remembered with disdain and horror. This essay will compare and contrast key characteristics that were and are central to King and Hitler's rise to prominence and memory. Some observations will be based on the speeches in the 1963 March on Washington for the former and 1953 propaganda film 'Triumph of the Will' for the latter's references. Both Martin Luther King Jr and Adolf Hitler had positive body language. When speaking, they stood up straight, maintained eye contact with the audience and projected their voices really well, which increased the significance of the speech topics even more. However, the way they were filmed in the original sources gave two different impressions. King's body language were more relaxed, the camera was at his eye–level, suggesting that he was very ... His speech was initially targeted at people of African–American descent. Later on, it became apparent that it appealed to all ethnicities and religions. On the contrary, Hitler was rather specific in his choice of supporters. During his speech to the Hitler Youth members, he said that any boy was welcomed by the organisation. • 56. How Did George Washington Influence The Government George Washington saw the many flaws in our government . He became the president in 1789 and ran for two terms; he set the precedent of not running for a third term. He elected men into his cabinet such as Alexander Hamilton and Thomas Jefferson. George Washington anticipated that the government would be broken if we formed political parties, became involved in foreign wars, and stopped listening to the Constitution. George Washington foresaw that forming parties based on political belief would separate the nation. He thought that it would turn the people against each other since they had such different political views. George Washington wrote, "...as this is the point of your political fortress against which the batteries of internal and external enemies will be most constantly and actively...directed..." The passionate attachment Washington mentions would be making strong bonds with other countries. He most likely got influenced to say this by the war going on between France and Britain. France wanted help, just as they had done for us during the Revolutionary War. Britain thought that they should get the help of the U.S. because they were such large trading partners. • 58. The Battle Of Trafalgar Between France And Great Britain... A number of criteria ought to be present for free trade (FT) and economic globalization (EG) to occur. These being the open rules, enforcer, freedom of navigation, and international money. Firstly, there should be rules and regulations that participants should commonly abide. Secondly, there should be actor(s) or dominant power(s) who would police and ensure that the rules of FT and EG are enforced. Thirdly, these also necessitates free and safe navigation. Parties involved need to be assured that their products will arrive to their destination, else, no one would join free trade. Fourthly, international money (e.g. currency) which everyone recognizes for its notable value. The Battle of Trafalgar between France and Great Britain (GB) that resulted to the latter's domination of the former made it clear to every European states who is the commanding power in Europe. This battle's significance lies on the fact that it assured GB's naval supremacy and the beginning of British hegemony (from late 19th century till early 20th century) which was the first example of regional FT. This example is far from exemplary and may not be the most ideal to convince sceptics of FT of its merit but, like any other organization, FT itself got better through time. To begin with, the adoption of the gold standards in 1844 by GB when its economic power was worldly acknowledged, made it possible for an international currency to be used. • 60. The Fate Of 's Export Under Solia 's New Generalized... The fate of Taamail 's export under Solia 's new generalized system of preferences 1. Introduction The principle of special economic needs for the least developed countries (LCDs) was recognized in the GATT 1965, where the preferential treatment of such countries in matters of trade, tariffs and other legal measures was deemed a necessary vehicle to both trade liberalizations and also for enhancing the economic development of the LCDs (Mckenzie, 2005). Consequently, the World Trade Organization (WTO) has recognized the need for the preferential treatment of the developing countries in matters of trade as provided for under the Article I:1 of the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade 1994 (GATT 1994), targeting the most–favoured–nations (MFN) (GATT, 1979). Therefore, the World Trade Organization (WTO) regulatory context relevant in this case goes back to the Generalized System of Preferences as established under the Enabling clause of the GATT, allowing for the preferential treatment of the developing countries over their developed counterparts in matters of trade relationships (EC, 2004). The relevant legal issue is whether the recent change in the Generalized System of Preferences (GSP) as developed by Solia are in violation of Article I and Article II of the GAAT of 1994. The most relevant legal issue under this case however, is the existing inconsistency between the provisions of Article I: 1 of the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade 1994 (GATT 1994), as required ... • 62. The British Position 's Position On The Morality Continuum A major difference between 1956 and the 1930s was the British position's position on the morality continuum. The Anti–Appeasement position championed by Churchill during the 1930s had aged very well. By 1956 the horrors of world war two were still fresh memories for all adult Britons and Churchill's historical writings seemed to cement this view. At a time when the evils of imperialism were becoming more apparent and resented a great deal of British pride was sourced from standing up to fascism in 1939 and ultimately winning. Illegal, unilateral military intervention in Suez on the back of a legal nationalisation of a foreign owned asset had all the hallmarks of a colonist power's show of strength. British national interest was undoubtedly threatened by the loss of oil, spread of Arab nationalism and (more questionably) the resulting spread of communism throughout the region but the moral high ground of a nation defending itself against fascism was more difficult to conjure up. By drawing parallels between (specifically) 1938 and the nationalization crisis a sense of moral authority was gained. Britain could no longer hope to act unilaterally with success. The support (active and passive) from the commonwealth and the USA was no longer present. Britain viewed Nasser as a reckless dictator who had potential to massively threaten western power in the Middle East, the power of Britain and ultimately tip the balance in the cold war. If the level of support for an Australia to become a republic continues to grow, there are several things that must occur. • 66. King Alfred Research Paper King Alfred of Wessex was probably the best known of all "Anglo–Saxon rulers". And Alfred's reputation still stands high with historians, though few would now want to follow following, claiming him as 'the most perfect character in history.' Alfred is someone who has had greatness thrust upon him. How and why did he acquire his glowing reputation, and how does it stand up today? There can be no doubt that Alfred's reign was significant, both for the direction of the country's development and the fortunes of his descendants. Alfred was the only surviving Anglo–Saxon province. Alfred nearly succumbed to the Vikings, but kept his nerve and won a decisive victory at the battle of Edington in 879. He then paved the way for the future unity of England, who conquered the remaining areas held by the Vikings in the east and north, so that by the mid–tenth century, the England we are familiar with, was ruled as one country for the first time. Alfred studied, and even translated from Latin into Old English, certain works that were regarded as "most necessary for all men to know". Alfred also tried to put these principles into practice, for instance, he became convinced that those in authority in church or ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... • 68. Canada 's Health Care System Canada's health care system is one that formed in the 1950s and 60s, also known as Medicare. It is a system that Canada as a nation often takes pride in, as it is predominantly public with basic health care is available to all citizens, and has some aspects of the private system incorporated as well. Health care often occurs in terms that compare public versus private health care systems. After a thorough analysis of private health care associated with neo–conservatism, and public health care associated with welfare state liberalism, I assert that the more beneficial option for Canada would be public health care. Public health care is very accessible, and universal, therefore allowing the individual to have access to health care nation–wide. As well, it is significantly more affordable than private health care when concerning the average Canadian citizen. Although, it can be argued that private healthcare is a better option for Canada because it would improve the quality of health care, offering quicker access it, and it reduces the amount of stress put on the upper class in paying for public health care. However, privatization acts as a barrier to providing universal and quality health care on an equitable basis. To understand why public health care is a more fitting choice for Canada, one must understand the relationship between the welfare state and public health care, and why liberals advocate for public health care. • 72. Essay on Jeffersonian Vs. Jacksonian Democracy in the US How might we distinguish 'Jacksonian democracy' from 'Jeffersonian democracy'? A period of nearly 30 years are associated with the Presidency of Jefferson, his successors and his 'democracy' from 1801 until Andrew Jackson's election in 1828. A vision of a united, equal America, limited government and natural aristocracy ruled the Jeffersonian style of democracy. However, with the election of Andrew Jackson in 1828, a new form of democracy, differentiating in multiply ways to the Jeffersonian America, engulfed the American political and social scene. Jacksonian Democracy, a dream of the common man, the use of the Presidential veto, and Anglo–Saxonism as well other elements dominated this form of democracy and era. Despite this, many ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Glenn E. Hoover submits a slightly different approach, suggesting that Jefferson was not a supporter of elitism but instead "he recognized that there was among men, a natural aristocracy of ability. However, these differences...did not justify any unequal treatment". Therefore, it can be seen that Jeffersonian democracy did not favour the privileged but recognised their existence within society, acknowledging the ability for people to transcend social classes through their own efforts. Jackson conversely championed, as Edward Pessen put it, the common 'white' man and was distrustful of the Jeffersonian natural aristocracy. Jackson was known to have had a simple rural background, the first president to be known by a nickname and the first President to have achieved the most prestigious office in America without rising through high office at Washington. All these factors strengthened the idea that his democracy favoured the common man, something the Jeffersonian could not claim. To Jacksonians, the country's future lay in the hands of the common 'white' man, an idea supported through the fact that "the percentage of [the] eligible population that voted...[averaged] sixty–nine percent...Hence, from Jackson forward presidents could claim...they were the representatives of the people". The first reading published on differencebetween.net focused on the two interpretations of democracy, representative and participatory, while the second reading focused on the origin and history of voting in Australia. Both readings were informative but I personally favoured the first reading 'Difference between participatory democracy and representative democracy' because of its succinct description. The article suggests that if we want to be liberated from the current representative democracy, we need to put responsibility in the hands of the citizens, making it a participatory democracy. Essay on Impacts of WTO on Trading Countries Impacts of WTO on Trading Countries International trading has had its delays and road blocks, which has created a number of problems for countries around the world. Countries, fighting with one another to get the better deal, create tariffs and taxes to maximize their profit. This fighting leads to bad relationships with competing countries, and the little producing countries get the short end of this stick. There are five main rules that the WTO depends on to operate smoothly on a daily basis and they are as follows: nondiscrimination, reciprocity, enforceable commitments, transparency, and safety valves. (Paullier) First, we will look at nondiscrimination. There are two main concepts to understand when looking at the nondiscrimination rule: Most Favored Nation (MFN) and National Treatment Principle (NTP). The MFN involves one country, usually a larger, more developed country, deciding that it wants to trade with another country, usually a little country, and give them certain benefits that other countries might not get because the larger country doesn't like them as well or had bad relationships with them. For example, if the Japan decided that it wanted to trade with Australia, and didn't want as much from China, it could make exporting and importing more beneficial to Australia by overlooking tariffs and taxes it might impose on China. This would negate the US. National Treatment Principle, which can best be explained in terms of goods being treated equally, regardless of the origin of the product. For instance, if Texas wanted to sell its beef to Idaho and so did Australia; Idaho wouldn't be able to impose a tax on the beef from Texas unless it imposed the same tax on the ones from Australia. This rule it supposed to keep trading fair between nations. Second, reciprocity is an ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
