Why shouldn’t it be owned by the public?

Wikipedia capitalizes of the buzz surrounding the
Initial Public offerings of major tech companies
(google, groupon and soon to be Facebook) with
Jimmy Wales announcing his intent to take
Wikipedia public. We are deliberately vague at
first, fueling speculation about wikipedia selling
out, it falling into the wrong hands etc. At this
point we want people talking and thinking about
wikipedia, and of course coming to realize just
how vital it is.
4. Eventually we reveal the truth... This is not a for-profit IPO.
Each person can own a maximum of one share, And you can
buy a share for any price.. from a dollar up. Our “IPO” goes
live on a specific date with 1 million shares for sale on an
e-commerce site.
5. Of course buying a share is really just a donation
to wikipedia, but its more than than a formality...
Shareholders will be able to log on to online
shareholder meetings and hear Jimmy Wales
discuss issues that face the company. Important
issues surronding expansion, privacy, SOPA,
fundraising etc. will be put to vote. Since each
shareholder can only own a single share, no one
person’s voice is more important than another’s.
6. Shares are good for one year.
at the beginning of the new year the company will have
another public offering, generating more revenue for
wikipeida and insuring a diverse and dynamic pool of
ownership for wikipedia.
