Music box the stone roses
1. The Stone Roses interview – 1989
The style of the interviewispromotional thisisbecause theyare tryingtopromote the bandthrough
this interview. The interview is also quite combative, I think the whole interview is combative
because IanBrownand JohnSquire wasreservedaboutgivingawayany information and they seem
to get quite annoyed with the interviewer when she asks if they are insecure.
Duringthe interviewthe interviewer uses a sound bite and asks the band about being anti-royalist
and why Ian Brown has a union jack tattoo on his arm if he is anti-royalist. When Ian Brown was
askedaboutthe tattoo and weatherthe interviewercouldsee ithe saidthatshe can’t see itbecause
he isn’t ashamed but he isn’t proud because prides a sin. The interview doesn’t include an
introductionasfar as we see because the interviewstarts withIanBrownand John Squire waiting in
silence for the first question.
The interviewer uses active listening in the interview, we see this when the interviewer starts
wording her questions round what very little the stone roses have said. For example when the
intervieweraskswhatthe worst thing the band has had said about them John Squire says that they
have onlyhad goodthingssaid.Soin response tothis the intervieweraskedwhatthe best thing said
about the band was.
The questionsusedinthe interview were a mixture of open and closed questions. An example of a
closed ended question asked was when the interviewer asked if they are bitter about the press
tripping over themselves to talk to the group. An example of an open ended question is when the
interviewer asked what they most fear happening to the Stone Roses.
The contextof the interviewistelevision. The purpose of the interview was for Ian Brown and John
Squire to promote the band and their music.
