We
Value
DIGNITY
Ms. Redgz Molidor
South Lakes Integrated School
First Quarter, SY 2022-2023
Prepared by
Objectives
 define dignity as it relates to your
being;
 appreciate the need for a just and
humane interaction with one another;
 support the proper treatment of
others and respond to violations of
dignity.
“DIGNITY:
An Innate Value
Dignity
comes from the Latin
word “dignitas” meaning
“worthy.”
innate
• “existing in, belonging to, or
determined by factors present
in an individual from birth”
• “belonging to the essential
nature of something”
DIGNITY is an innate value.
“All human beings
are worthy of
honor and
respect.”
We value DIGNITY.
Having dignity is defined as the state of
being worthy of honor and respect. All
human beings are born with the right to
be treated with dignity. Our dignity
holds us together as a whole and
complete being. Without dignity, there is
no baseline for what we can consider as
socially just among people.
CL Book
page 45
“Understanding dignity means being
able to recognize the worth of
others and treating them justly
because, like us, they are important
to both Man and God. Everyone
deserves to be treated with dignity,
even those who have committed
sins against God and His creation.
1. How did Jesus show respect for the dignity of the
woman?
2. If you were Jesus, would you have shown the
woman the same respect? Why?
3. If you were the woman, how would you show Jesus
that you are worthy of his respect?
4. Do you agree that you are capable of showing more
love if you were forgiven more? Why?
5. Is being able to forgive someone who has done you
wrong one way of showing respect for his or her
dignity?
“Loss of
Respect for
Dignity
Situations wherein the dignity of
a person is violated:
✓ Human Trafficking
✓ Bullying
✓ Domestic & Child
Abuse
✓ Slavery
✓ Torture
✓ Rape
✓ Poverty
✓ Illiteracy
✓ Sickness
“Dignity Equals
Social Justice
 What happens to an individual who
experiences extreme poverty?
 Do you think his/her basic needs
are met?
 How does he/she feel?
 Does he/she feel dignified?
 What do we do to help others cope
with poverty?
Poverty is just one of the social issues that affect
the dignity of the human person. Others include
racism, abortion, income and opportunity inequality,
civil rights violation, violence, and many more.
These issues, when not addressed, negatively
impacts human dignity.
It is important therefore that we look after the
dignity of our fellow human beings. Looking out
after the dignity of others is also advocating for
social justice.
It is equality in terms
of the distribution of
wealth, opportunities,
and privileges within
a society.
It ensures that people
get what they deserve.
Social Justice
“I think what the poor want is a hand
that helps them to have a sense of
dignity and independence.
They want to be able to put food on
their table by themselves through
their own effort. That is a part of
the human aspiration.
~Dato Dr. Kim Tan
Former Chairman of Jubilee Action
 Treat others fairly.
 Recognize that others, just like us, should be
valued.
 Consider others as our equals, not based on
material, financial, and social standards, but
on God-given qualities and rights.
When we advocate for social justice, we realize the humanity of others.
Advocating For Social Justice
“The struggle to realize humanity
is the struggle for dignity.
An individual’s humanness
cannot be separated from his or
her dignity.
Dignity is to be upheld for our
humanity to be realized.
~M.M. Tomas
Indian Christian Theologian/Social Thinker/Activist
“The Role of
Our Value
System
The value system of a person reflects his
or her treatment of others’ dignity.
Self-centered individuals tend to look at
themselves as having a higher value than
other people. A value system that revolves
around oneself manages to use other
people as a “means” to one’s “ends.”
This reminds us not to use people for our
own selfish ends. Putting the prospect of
personal satisfaction higher than what
people deserve would lead to treating
them less than what is due them.
Do not treat people as if they
are objects and objects as if
they were people.
Negligence on our moral responsibility
leads to disruption of other people’s
dignity and less opportunity for their
needs to be met.
Part of community responsibility is to
ensure that the welfare of everyone is
met.
Hence, when dignity is trampled by
temporal or earthly pleasures and
materials, we have the moral obligation to
advocate the healing of individuals
affected. We need to help them regain
their dignity and make them realize their
self-worth.
Ways to
Uphold
and
Protect
Human
Dignity
At Home
✓ Allow your younger siblings to make
decisions for themselves.
✓ Discuss the concept of “human dignity
as an innate value” to your family
members.
✓ Show love and concern for your
grandparents.
In School
✓ Respect the unique identity of
your classmates.
✓ Include students with special
needs or those who are
“differently-abled” in your project
or school work.
✓ Make a stand against those who
discriminate against the poor or
people with special needs.
In the Community
✓ Actively participate in youth
organizations that promote solidarity
and an inclusive community.
✓ Support activities that uphold the well-
being of old people.
“Survival of
the Fittest
 a concept often associated with evolution
 the “fittest” or the “strongest” eventually
survives the conditions of the environment
 When this ethic is applied to relationships, the
goal is to survive only for oneself, making the
stronger ones take all the opportunities they
can get without consideration for the needs
of the weaker ones.
Survival of the Fittest
Life is NOT about survival of the fittest.
It is about helping others so that all can
survive. God expects us to help each
other out, especially during times of great
needs. We are not to abandon the
weakest among us or sacrifice them for
our own sake. We must learn how to
embrace them and help them realize their
worth, upholding their dignity and showing
them the respect they rightfully deserve
as children of God and as our equals.
Thanks!
