3. OBJECTIVES
Learn to be a responsible member of a moral community
Explore the ways community relationships get broken or
destroyed
Consider the ways to actively participate in our community
4. ~Margaret Chase Smith
“The right way is not always the popular and
easy way. Standing for what is right when it is
unpopular is a true test of moral character.”
5. Do you belong to a club in school?
How do you feel being part of a club?
Do you feel that you comfortably fit in?
Do you feel that you can contribute to the group?
Do you think of the welfare of the group?
6. The club you
belong to in school
is an example of a
community and we
all exist in
communities.
7. Our communities may be select
groups such as our family and
friends, the people in school, or
those who live with us in our
village or town.
Our communities may also include
the people who share our religion,
traditions, race, or gender.
Everyone, in fact, the entire
humanity, may possibly be our
community.
8. We benefit from the other
members of the communities
we belong to. Other members
also benefit from us.
Being part of a community
entails looking out not only for
our own interests but also for
the interests of others.
9. God calls us to become
moral members of our
community, living with
openness and service to each
other.
A community composed of
individuals who willingly
serve one another reflects
the kind of community that
God has in mind.
10. Serving our
moral community
means looking after the
welfare of everyone
around us, following
God’s call for us to live
with openness and
service to each other.
11. FILIPINO SOCIAL PRACTICES
Filipinos are known for having close family ties. They treat their
friends, neighbors, and whole community as part of their family. That
is why Filipinos have their own set of social practices, traditions, and
traits that demonstrates service to their moral communities. What do
you think are these practices?
In the table, write at least 2 Filipino practices, traditions, and traits that
have POSITIVE and NEGATIVE impacts on the community. Describe
what you have written and explain how it impacts the community.

14. In Paul’s time, believers of Christ came from
different religious, cultural, racial, and
geographical backgrounds.
Paul, in his letters to the Romans, wanted to
emphasize that even though they came from
diverse backgrounds, they have one thing in
common: they are all servants of Christ, so they
must relate with each other well and work as one.
The situation in Paul’s time still holds true today.
Believers of Christ today also come from different
backgrounds. Here is Paul’s advice on how
believers of Christ should treat each other.
15. 4 For just as each of us has one body with many members, and these
members do not all have the same function, 5 so in Christ we, though
many, form one body, and each member belongs to all the others. 6 We
have different gifts, according to the grace given to each of us. If your
gift is prophesying, then prophesy in accordance with your faith; 7 if it is
serving, then serve; if it is teaching, then teach; 8 if it is to encourage,
then give encouragement; if it is giving, then give generously; if it is to
lead, do it diligently; if it is to show mercy, do it cheerfully.
In God’s Service
(Romans 12:4-8)
16. A community is vital to our well-being because it gives us a
sense of belonging and connects us with others with whom
we build enduring relations.
It makes us feel accepted, loved, safe, and protected. We
need people who would check on us, support us during hard
times, bless us, and stimulate our love and goodness. We
feel enriched because of the gifts shared to us by fellow
members of the community.
COMMUNITY
19. A moral community does not necessarily mean a group of
people who act morally; it refers to people that we hold in
moral regard.
They are those whom we consider before we do something
that could affect them.
We usually ask ourselves, “Am I doing the right thing?”
before we do something.
MORAL
COMMUNITY
20. Persons with
Disabilities
PWDs deserve moral consideration,
as do other human beings.
Therefore, PWDs, as well as all the
human beings we relate to, make up
our moral community because we,
“Recognize an ethical connection
with them through the demands of
justice, the bonds of compassion, or
a sense of obligation.”
21. When we adhere to these concepts,
we help ensure that our community
continues to thrive peacefully and harmoniously.
JUSTICE
A sense of justice
relates to the
concept of
treating others
well and fair.
COMPASSION
Compassion is caring
for the welfare and
happiness of others
as if they were our
own.
OBLIGATION
A sense of
obligation is a
feeling that
something is the
right thing to do.
23. Comparing ourselves to others.
Expressing unnecessary opinions on others.
Judging others easily.
Having too much pride.
Refusing to connect with others.
24. Sowing hatred Making healthy connections
Causing division Endeavoring for unity
Being ruled by selfish desires Seeking the welfare of all
25. When a relationship based on mutual respect and responsibility is honored
and observed in the community, its members seek the welfare of others.
How members of a community act according to their moral responsibility
determines the health of community relationships.
“Respect one another, love other believers…” (1 Peter 2:17)
“Let us be concerned for one another to help one another to show love
and to do good.” (Hebrews 10:24)
27. Greeting others and smiling at them
Sharing blessings to others
Respecting our elders
Helping others
Being good stewards of the environment
