Questions On Teachers Background, Values And Beliefs
Case study
2.1. Teachers Background, values and beliefs.
Kaylene agreed to participate in extensive interviews over a few sessions with the knowledge of
developing this case study. (Appendix one – permission slip) As a teacher of 15 years, Kaylene
processes a wealth of knowledge and has vast experience with assessment in the junior primary
sector. Kaylene is currently a year three teacher in an Independent Public school. The school
currently follows the International Baccalaureate Primary Years Program (PYP), an inquiry based
framework, as a means of delivering the Australian National Curriculum. Kaylene believes her role
as an educator is not only to teach her students and make them knowledgeable but to help develop
the students ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It also describes the reporting requirements teachers are to follow for all stakeholders. The school
believes highly in collaboration between the school, teachers, student and the wider community, for
this reason professional development is available to staff. Along with regular professional
development, the school encourages teaching staff to reflect and contribute at staff meetings, year
level meeting and curriculum meetings. Arthur et al. (2010) embodies the benefits of having a
collaborative, supportive environment as essential to the development of children.
2.3. Reporting requirements and storage.
At this school teachers are expected to collect baseline data at the beginning of each year on the
students they have in their class, some of the information is retrieved from the previous year's
assessment records, giving teachers a starting point. Kaylene will collect this information and use to
group children in either levels and or common goals. (Appendix 2 – spreadsheet of students
recorded progress). Completion of 'guides to making judgement' criteria sheets for each summative
assessment piece are required by the school and with consultation with others within the same year
level moderated to gain appropriate scores/grades. (appendix 3 – GTMJ template) Records of
achievement are collected throughout the year and used to assist with writing report cards twice a
year, term 2 and 4 each year.

Falls Church City 's Local Plan For The Education Of The...
Falls Church City's Local Plan for the Education of the Gifted can be found at the following address:

I evaluated the information in the document above based upon Moon's (2013) nine measures to
consider in comprehensive gifted education program. I think that FCCPS does a considerably good
job addressing these nine guidelines. However, I believe they should consider more non–
standardized materials and data while considering students for identification.
1. Multiple assessments should be given to represent the categories of giftedness identified in the
district's definition (Moon, 2013, p.133).
According to the FCCPS definition of giftedness, the will "screen to identify and to appropriately
place student with specific aptitudes and achievement in the pertinent and academically advances
programs (...Language Arts, Mathematics)". Students must receive between the 93rd–99th
percentiles on Specific Academic Aptitude assessments, or the average of their scores must be
between the 93rd and 99th percentiles. FCCPS uses multiple assessments to test for SAA in reading
and math including: SAGES, Raven, STAR Math, STAR Reading, CogATs, and the SOLs (FCCPS,
Local Plan for the Education of the Gifted, p. 7).
2 & 3. Use the most current versions of standardized tests that are going to be used to make a
decision about admission into a gifted program and that norms are up–to–date and a good

Case Study : ' The Workplace '
Joe Pacifico BUS 164 July 14th, 2015 Case Study #1
In the workplace, there are a number of different influence strategies that are essential when it
comes to effective leadership practices. The concepts related to social proofs and reciprocation are
common strategies that are used by many well known leaders in business. In basic terms
reciprocation would refer to a repayment of a gesture. Typically reciprocation comes with ulterior
motives when conducted by business minded individuals. With that being said, these motives can be
related to making new connections or barters made in the sales of products or services.
Reciprocation has its benefits, but those benefits might not directly impact one party initially at the
time of an exchange. In terms of networking, one in business might entertain prospective clients to a
nice dining experience. Furthermore, a $400 steak dinner has the potential to be a great investment
as it is an opportunity for one to market their social proofs to others in the hopes of gaining future
business.
Social proofs are another important business strategy. This influence strategy is related to factors
that influence everyday decision making. In other words, under the ideologies of social proofs
individuals tend to make different choices based on previous decisions that were made by others.
The reasoning for this is the fact that there is the assumption those whom encompass a similar
decision made a choice that is universally accepted by all. For

Mdde 602: Analyzing Quantitative Data Analysis
The first artefact for my portfolio is Assignment 2 in Mdde 602, titled: Analyzing Quantitative Data.
Part two of this assignment included an Excel spreadsheet which displayed the data. This
assignment consisted of an Excel data spreadsheet containing multiple sets of data to perform the
statistical analysis. The second component consisted of creating a response document on Microsoft
Word in order to record the written answers to the assignment problem. The solution to each
problem was only possible to solve after performing the data analysis in the Excel sheet first. The
most challenging and exciting part of this assignment was explaining the concept to a person who
had no understating of statistics and breaking down the material to be easily comprehensible.
Reflection and Competencies
Reflecting back on this artefact, it was an excellent opportunity for me to tackle quantitative
research, analyze data and refresh my Microsoft Excel skills in terms of formulas, graphing, and
then being able to explain that data. Applying the information and theories in a professional
workplace gives ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Some were first–year students like myself and others were halfway through the program. It was
interesting to get to know them, their professions and experiences with distance education. Finally,
this assignment required me to summarize data from excel spreadsheet, synthesize information (5.6)
and effectively communicate in a variety of forms (5.7). This was not easy as all the data had to be
explained in writing and typed clearly for the reader to make sense of it. Overall, this assignment
taught me the skills of analyzing quantitative data, and despite the struggles with formulas, it was an
excellent opportunity to practice and answer the questions and get them right some after a few
attempts if not on the first

Taking a Look at State Testing
State Testing State testing is damaging youth by pressuring students to succeed. failure is not an
option for the teachers and the parents "Tests today are not like the tests most parents took when
they were in school. New forms of teaching students' work are already in use, and even more
changes will be coming in the years ahead. The term "assessment" has come into common use to
describe these new ways of measuring students' accomplishments. Tests and assessments perform
several vital roles in the education process. They are used most frequently to help students, teachers,
schools, and parents know that students learned and what they still need to study. Teachers can use
information from assessments to design lesson that meet the needs of their students. School districts
and states use assessment results to evaluate whether they are meeting their goals. Assessments also
are used by policy–makers accountability to help gauge the effectiveness of programs and schools.
Finally, assessments are helpful for transitions. They can show if students are ready to begin a new
grade level, or to enter a particular college. Tests are sometimes used–along with other information–
to help decide if students should be placed in special programs. Standardized aptitude and
achievement tests still have a major influence on what students are taught. The movement toward
education standards will probably see such tests continue to have a significant effect

wasn't too complicated. All of the topics discussed I already started learning before. All that
happened was that I got to much work and I was stressed, and in top of that, the fear of having a
quiz for the next class made more stressed. Also, we had to remember many equations, specially for
derivatives. 2. Which concepts did you master well? Explain. The concept I believe I mastered well

Teaching Strategies For Children 's Elementary School...
This book will show tried and tested strategies used during my children's elementary school years at
a public school and our homeschool years during middle school. These strategies will smooth out
tempestuous parenting waters, whether a child is in a traditional school or home schooled.
Children are a measure of our success, worthiness, and achievements. We are judged by their
success and triumphs and we compare ourselves to other parents and the way they educate their
children. Additionally, we compare our children to other children and how they behave and interact
with others.
Every parent's desire is that their children be successful, well adjusted, loving, respectful,
independent, self–motivated, religious, giving, nice, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Homeschooling was the way to implement my ideas and ensure that my children received the best
education. I spent years taking education classes to prepare myself for this new endeavor. Behavior
Observation and Screening in Child Care, Child Growth and Development, EDE 0755, EEC 1200
(Fundamentals of Early Childhood Education), Behavior and Screening in Child Care, Child Growth
and Development, Identifying and Reporting Child Abuse and Neglect, Health and Nutrition,
Developmentally Appropriate Practices for Young Children, School Rules and Regulations were
some of the classes that I took at a local university. These classes along with my experience with the
school system assisted me in developing new ideas.
I home schooled my older son for middle school, yet took my younger son out of the school system
in elementary school. Those were our best years, our children had time to be children and play
outside every day and not be stuck at home doing homework after a long day at school. We traveled
all over the United States, Canada, and Brazil, we learned as we travelled without the constraint of
the school calendar.
They flourished since they loved homeschool. Not to mention that it was no longer boring or
repetitive. They advanced so much that they both were accepted into an extremely advanced
program for high school and were full time college students by

1. Understand the application of theories, principles and models of reflective practice to continuing
personal and professional development
When evaluating theories, principles and models of reflective practice it is always useful to have a
brief overview of the target subject. Continuing Personal and Professional Development (CPPD)
refers to the development of an individual in their professional work life. In essence it can be
compared to a journey, with a point of origin and an end point, within which there a number paths
and targets along the journey with a variety of career choices.

2. Adults experience and incorporate new perspectives on previously held ideas, modes of reasoning
and ideologies. A teacher in their practice should constantly incorporate and add new ways of
teaching and learn from previous experiences.
3. All adults carry a preconception of behaviour; for example in a public place, which is based on
personal upbring and experience. What may be perceived as abnormal behaviour for one individual
can be perfectly acceptable to another person.
I teach Key Skills to young adults with behavioural and emotional issues from a broad variety of
differing backgrounds and life experiences. As a consequence, I constantly have to be very creative
in my professional practice. Employing the three concepts of Brookfield's critical reflection allows
me to challenge any assumptions I may have and offers me the opportunity to evaluate the
effectiveness of my teaching practice.
My area of improvement was in specifically, the delivery of English with learners who were
demotivated and disengaged from the learning experience. I identified that in an academically
driven environment, these particular learners were not comfortable with a formal classroom setting,
due to previous negative experiences of the school environment. This generated the need for new
methods of delivery, which was discussed with previous class tutor and teaching peer group,
problems areas identified in previous classes the learners relaxed too

A Research Study On Finance And Economics
Two years ago while I offered a research job at Cambridge in applied economics, one of my friends
jokingly quipped that one day I would be the next Raghuram Rajan, who had just taken over as the
Governor of the Reserve Bank of India following his academic position. I smiled as I had then not
considered the possibility of becoming an academic who could wield such power in designing
policies to govern the financial institution of the world 's largest democracy. In retrospect, this does
not seem very far from the truth with respect to my long–term career goals. I consider it a privilege
to contribute meaningful work that would improve the financial standards in my country. My
interest in a quantitative field like finance and economics comes as no surprise, since Mathematics is
one of my favorite subjects and my forte right from secondary school. The power of these subjects
to cater to practical applications in the real–world setting led to my close involvement with them,
which was also instrumental for my qualifying for the Indian National Mathematics Olympiad. For
my undergraduate studies, I chose Mechanical Engineering over the other options, at one of the top
universities for this discipline in my country, due to its significant quantitative content and for the
possibility of applying those tools to solving complex problems, which I did. The rigorous pure
math training spanning 3 semesters including topics in linear and vector algebra, multivariate
calculus, differential

My Creative Process Of Visual Merchandiser
Visual Merchandisers have many employment options available in many different sectors. I believe
that displays are all encompassing. It is the little details that culminate a theme or feel that makes
customers want to shop at a particular store and have a certain type of experience. It is about making
an environment inviting, whether that environment is a store, a party, a home, etc. I strongly believe
that there is so much inspiration in the world that can be used to create compelling store displays
that provoke consumers to shop and help maximize a store's profit. This is an interesting field where
not only artistic skills are necessary, but also the ability to merchandise the sales floor and make

I would like a job that is rewarding and where each day is somewhat different from the next, which
is possible with visual merchandising, because retail is always changing visually to keep up with
trends and seasons. In the short term, I hope to get a visual merchandising internship or a job where
I can gain more experience and use my skills that I have learned, in the retail environment. My long
term goal is to be able to work for an interior furnishing or décor company like Pottery Barn,
Restoration Hardware or Room and Board. I would like to do the set visuals for the catalog shoot.
To achieve this I plan to work hard to make myself marketable and stand out in the industry. My
next step to achieve my goal is to network with people within these companies, while still keeping
my options open for other job prospects. After I graduate I hope to work within one of these
companies as an assistant visual merchandiser and work my way up the ladder. By starting at the
bottom you learn every job, the required tasks and the company's structure. With this goal I intend to
finish my degree, continue learning the craft and skills, networking and eventually working for one

Standardized Test and Informal Reading Assessments Essay
How well do standardized tests work as tools for obtaining information about children's literacy
strengths and needs? Standardized tests have both positive and negative uses as they pertain to
obtaining information and what that information can be used for. The use of portfolios can also be
used to guide instruction, and they can be used as informal or summative assessments. The use of
both the standardized test as well as a student portfolio will give the teacher information that can be
used to assess how well they are instructing as well as what areas they may still need more work in.
There are many pros and cons as to whether or not there should be standardized testing. Both sides
of this debate have some valid points, and by listing ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
(ProCon.org, 2011, p. 1)
As to the validity of these statements, I can only offer my thoughts on these subjects. I do believe
that standardized tests are fair and objective. These tests are designed to test a student's knowledge
on certain set standards that a child should know given what grade level that student is in. As to
holding teachers and schools accountable, I believe this is where the biggest downfall of
standardized testing lies. To hold a teacher accountable I believe that more than the test scores need
to be looked at. An article in a Buffalo, New York newspaper supports my stance on this. One–third
of high school students miss at least 20 percent of school days in a given year – the equivalent of
seven weeks of school, according to a recent study by the district. And more than two out of five
kindergartners miss more than three weeks of school. (Pasciak, 2011)
When students miss that much school, it does not matter how good a teacher is, that student will not
do well. As to one of the opponents views, stated by Chris Mercogliano about President Bush's
NCLB act; "His dubiously noble sentiments notwithstanding, extensive and well–documented
research demonstrates that the only things standardized test actually measure are income levels and
socio–economic status" (Mercogliano, Autumn2004, Issue 22, p.

The Senate Bill 149 ( Sb 149 )
The Senate Bill 149 (SB 149) signed by Greg Abbot is about relating to alternative methods for
satisfying certain public high school graduation requirements, including the use of individual
graduation committees. This bill gives students a better chance at graduating, although it may or not
be continued results of this bill will have to be processed first. I chose this bill because I believed
that it would be well known also, because it is important to school life which has taken a big turn in
recent years. Education has taken a decline in funding so I think this law may benefit the sudden
drop in funding or perhaps is something the government hopes to be used as an olive branch due to
withdrawal of funding. My first article details who the law effects, and what requirements for
Individual Graduation committees (IGC). One of the effects of SB 149 is, "The law requires school
districts and open–enrollment charter schools to have IGCs for any eleventh or twelfth grade student
who has not passed two out of the five end of the course (EOC) exams at or the end of the eleventh
grade's year" (Seliger). "IGCs need the principal, the teacher of the relevant course; the department
chair or lead teacher supervising the teacher of the relevant course; and either the student's
parent/guardian, or the student if the student is at least 18 years of age or is an emancipated minor"
(Seliger). This is a pretty basic requirement that I believe most organizations involving students
would have

Arlington County Giftedness
Arlington County does an excellent job adhering to most of Moon's 9 points:
1. The definition for Arlington County goes with what the state and federal government adheres to
and bases its assessments on the most current possible manner. They recognize the diversity by
putting the information in all different languages. In addition,
"The Office of Gifted Services reflects this philosophy and complies with Virginia Regulations
Governing Educational Services for Gifted Students based on the following concepts:
a. Giftedness is developmental; it is potential which must be nourished.
b. Gifted students share some characteristics with all other children.
c. There is variability among the gifted."

Elise had a strong desire to participate in several public speaking related activities, but became upset
when she was not selected. Connections and interactions with others At least verbally, Elise
insightfully articulated her self awareness, and the existence of a "theory of mind", the awareness
that others have different ways of thinking from one's own, which enabled her to internalize the
perspectives of other people. Similar to her ability to draw themes from and across text, she deftly
drew inferences about social situations as well. When the class was having a discussion about the
new lunch program, some of the students began to talk about the supposed inefficiency of the lunch
ladies. Elise raised her hand to say that the lunch ladies worked hard all day to prepare and serve the
food. She took on another perspective. Also, Elise would usually be the first person to volunteer to
include another individual in their group, or to help another student clean the floor. She would often
seek ways to positively interact with other people. Strong interests and preferences One of interests,
which showed through her school work and her life outside the classroom, is her interest in animals.

claimed that she had a very large collection of these webkins stuffed animals at home. She

Validity Of The Assessment Information Essay
Validity Validity is an overarching term referring to the accuracy and appropriateness of the specific
uses of assessment information, its soundness and fairness of the assessments interpretations and the
consequences of how the assessment information is used (Miller, Linn & Gronlund, 2009). Validity
cannot be measured on an absolute scale (Darr, 2005). Thus it is measured by a matter of degree
(high, medium and low), the higher the stakes of the assessment the higher the validity needed in the
assessment. The validity of an assessment, is always considered in relation to the intended purpose
or use of the assessment evidence. To justify the adequacy and appropriateness of the interpretations
and uses of the assessment Darr (2005) states that 4 major unitary aspects need to be considered –
content, construct, criterion, and consequential – in order to make an overall evaluative judgement.
Content consideration is concerned with the link between the assessment content and the particular
learning intentions of the topic, unit or focus of learning. Construct considerations focus on how
well the assessment tasks represent the relevant skill or skills being assessed for example,
comprehension and problem solving. Criterion considerations focus on the correlation of the way
different tasks, with the same conditions of success, are used to judge the students abilities.
Consequential considerations are aimed at figuring out the effects of the assessment and the
decisions made based

The Discover Assessment & Curriculum Development Model
The DISCOVER Assessment & Curriculum Development Model: This model, which can be applied
in any educational setting helps students build on their strengths in problem solving and multiple
intelligence. DISCOVER focuses on continuum problem solving which involves clearly solved
problems to open–ended problem. Criterion 1: Respect for individuals with diverse abilities,
strengths, and goals (FULLY MET) In 1993, Maker created DISCOVER to embrace Gardner's
theory of multiple intelligence and designed curriculum for "individual(s) willingness and ability to
meet real challenges and resolve difficulties in his or her personal, academic, and professional
environments in new and different but highly effective ways" (Maker, 2009, p. 254). The main goal
of this curriculum model was to build on a student 's' strength in problem solving and creativity
using six types of problem solving (Maker, 2009, p. 253). DISCOVER "included researchers from
Navajo, Caucasian, Mexican–American, Hispanic, Asian, Tohono O'Odham, and African–American
cultures" to apply "research–based theories" to create curriculum from a diverse viewpoint (Maker,
2009, p. 282). Criterion 2: Provide for identification of out–of–school learning opportunities that
match students abilities and interests (NOT MET) There are not many opportunities for out–of–
school learning opportunities. Though the teacher seems to have the option to further the students'
problem solving skills outside of the classroom, most of the

Our goal as a preschool team is to find an effective approach to preschool writing or a better way of
thinking about the writing process. By providing effective writing opportunities at the preschool
level, our students will become better readers, listeners, and writers. Input "Although No Child Left
Behind (NCLB) has focused attention on improving reading and math achievement, little attention
has been given to other subjects including writing. If state or local policies do not support the
teaching of writing, there is a possibility that teachers will neglect writing instruction" (McCarthey,
2008). Within the past few years, my district adopted the STORYtown curriculum for reading and
writing as a plan to improve student literacy scores district wide. Many teachers in my district
admitted that since they struggle with finding time and an effective way of teaching writing, it is

The Goals And Philosophy Of Art
Goals and Philosophy:
Visual Merchandisers have many employment options available in many different sectors. I believe
that displays are all encompassing. It is the little details that culminate a theme or feel that makes
customers want to shop at a particular store and have a certain type of experience depending on who
they are. It is all about making an environment whether a store, a party, a home, etc. as inviting and
welcoming as possible. I strongly believe that there is so much inspiration out there that can be used
to create compelling store displays that provoke consumers to shop and help maximize a store's
profits. This is an interesting field where not only are artistic skills necessary, but also the ability to
merchandise the sales floor and make every visual aspect of a store experience enjoyable.
My art is inspired by popular culture, the work of other artists in similar fields, and the work of
surrealist artists. The prospect of being able to have a job that comprises of creativity and a unique
perspective motivates me to pursue a career in art and design. I want to be able to have a job that I
feel is rewarding and where each day is somewhat different from the next which is possible with
visual merchandising because retail is always changing visually to keep up with trends and seasons.
In the short term I hope to get a visual merchandising internship or job where I can get more
experience and use my skills that I have learned, in the retail environment. In

Classroom Portfolio Analysis
Through the last year, I have learned extensively about myself and my teaching style. I have spent
the year working in a fifth grade contained classroom environment. During my time here I was able
to focus on different aspects of the student's education. The areas I decided that I need most practice
in was teaching math and collecting data that supported math growth from the students, teaching the
reading component of literacy, and my personal growth by creating an online portfolio. When
choosing to focus on math, I wanted to ensure that I was using a teaching method that promoted
growth and understanding for students. The reason I had selected the reading component of literacy
is that our district has a focus on reading. I thought that it ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

By students reading aloud, we were able to practice the student's fluency and determine students
accuracy within their decoding processes. The majority of students decoded at a fifth–grade level.
Students who struggled with decoding were provided interventions within the resource room at the
school. I noticed that students who remained in the classroom showed more progress throughout the
year. Students provided with interventions continued to struggle with the fluency component of
reading. For next time, I would like to be able to provide more in class interventions that target
students needs based on reading fluency and comprehension. Finally, I chose my last goal to be
creating a portfolio that highlights my growth and knowledge in teaching. Within this portfolio, I
include my resume, cover letter, reference letters, and sample lesson plans that I could provide at
interviews. This portfolio will also support the job application process. Overall, this was one of the
more manageable goals to complete because I have all the materials ready to go for my job search.
The portfolio was a success because I used it to land a job at the Dallas School District

Assessment Of Special Education Is A Problem Solving Process
There are various methods of assessment used in special education, but before this paper delves into
that the definition of assessment must be discussed. An assessment in special education is a process
that involves collecting information about a student for the purpose of making decisions (Macy,
2007). When this definition is deconstructed, we have to ask the question, "What is a process?" A
process is a series of actions that bring about a result. It is a step–by–step series of actions that bring
about a result and in special education, what we find is that assessment is primarily a problem–
solving process. There are kids in classrooms, for instance, who are reading very poorly, having
difficulty functioning in class, and who are struggling each day. We have to figure out what is going
on here, what is actually happening and is there anything we can do to improve their quality of life.
Again, the purpose of assessment in special education is primarily a problem–solving process that
addresses these issues (Macy, 2007). Special education educators have to collect a lot of information
about the student that make it relevant to making classification decisions as well as educational
decisions. This is the key piece here. Ultimately in special education, educators have to make
numerous decisions, for example, they have to make decisions on whether or not the student is
going to meet the eligibility standards for special education, they have to make decisions regarding

Essay about Motivational Strategy Guidelines Based On...
Purpose of this paper The purpose of this paper is three–fold: First, to examine briefly Social
Cognitive Theory's view on the contribution of self–efficacy to learning and motivation; Then, to
offer some guidelines for motivational strategies reflecting self–efficacy concepts that have been
supported by research; Finally, to provide some possible ways to implement these guidelines in a
mathematics class. Introduction Within us all is a desire to achieve. The need exists to show, to
ourselves and to others, that we are capable in some area; that we are able to perform difficult tasks,
acquire knowledge that no one else knows, run faster, jump higher, and live up to some perceived
potential unique to us as individuals. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The study of motivation has been influenced by various psychological theories. Each of these
theories state different sources of motivational needs, and each have certain drawbacks. Let us
examine some of these theories that have developed over the years. Behavioral views Behavioral
views of motivation concentrate on extrinsic factors (external rewards or punishments) and
reinforcement of desired behaviors (based on John Watsons' mechanistic concept that behaviors
could be totally described in terms of observable responses to certain stimuli). An extrinsically
motivated student performs "in order to obtain some reward (good grades, teacher approval, etc.) or
avoid some punishment external to the activity itself," as opposed to a student who is intrinsically
motivated and undertakes an activity "for its own sake, for the enjoyment it provides, the learning it
permits, or the feelings of accomplishment it evokes" (Lepper, 1988). B.F. Skinner's operant
conditioning theory proposes that the voluntary responses of people are strengthened when
reinforced by rewards and weakened when they are ignored or punished. Related to students,
Skinner developed programmed instruction, in which students were given positive reinforcement for
correct responses, motivating the student to proceed with desired consequences. The behavioral
approach is limited, however, in that it stresses external motivating factors (praise,

Accountability In Nursing Practice
I always love to hear the response when children are asked, "What do you want to be when you
grow up?" Some will say "firefighter," "police officer," "doctor," "artist," "musician," or "astronaut,"
among others. At seven years old, I had grand plans of becoming a cashier. My parents supported
me in my endeavors, as they always have, so it was no surprise when my mom allowed me to scan
the groceries in the self–checkout line whenever we went shopping. A few years passed and as I got
older, those plans developed into something more related to my passion. After school, I would
arrange all of my dolls and stuffed animals in rows on the floor, hang my homework page on the
whiteboard I had in my room, and teach my "students" how to do the problems listed on the
worksheet. I loved it so much that, from that ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

benefit them rather than the state test. Clearly state testing should be a thing of the past because it

subgroups at the state level. Because there were no Asian–Pacific Islander students at the district
level, this data will not be considered. Thus, at the district and local levels white students
outperformed all subgroups. In reading, the percentage of mastery among Whites (45%) was triple
than that for the mastery of Blacks (15%) and Hispanics (15%). ELL and Special Education students
across all grade levels had stable and low performance. An analysis of the grade level 5 district and
school reading data showed that White students outperformed all subgroups. At the school, the focus
groups are LEA, Special Education, Blacks, and Hispanics. Data from the grade level five
classrooms showed 50% mastery of students in Section A which was significantly lower than the
students in Section B (83%), Section C (80%), Section D (90%), and Section E (63%). Although
standardized data revealed that in reading vocabulary the national grade percentile was 74, there

For successful implementation of a programme, the supervisor has to look into the diverse
backgrounds of the children. According to DAP (2009), "Development and learning occur in and are
influenced by multiple social and cultural contexts". The supervisor has to understand that children's
development requires viewing each child within the sociocultural context of the child's family,
educational setting, community and the society. The contexts are interrelated thus, they all strongly
influence how the child develops. Celebrating different festivals together as a centre and talking
about different cultural backgrounds during lessons are a good way to include children from various
cultural backgrounds.
While implementing a programme, the supervisor might come across children from dysfunctional
families. Providing the proper financial assistance to these families is very important. Centre–based
Financial Assistance for Childcare (CFAC) can be arranged for children who come from
dysfunctional families. This scheme helps eligible families to offset childcare fees of their children
every month. The government also gives childcare subsidies to working parents who enrol their
children in childcare centres. (MCYS)
Parents of children from dysfunctional families might find these two schemes helpful in providing
their children with proper early childhood education. This should be taken care of so that every child

The Observation Was On Math
The observation was on math again and in group lesson form shortly after 11 in the morning. My
host teacher finds this time best for her students because it is after recess and lunch. Practicing with
documentation in anecdotal notes with photographs was an effective way to get individual
information in assessing each student's learning in comparison to just observation notes or relying
solely on pictures. Anecdotal records provide a different context of notes in its specialization
typically for one student and for its form in being objective based in preparation, introduction, and
reflection. "They allow the teacher to bring the child's learning experience to life." (Helm, Beneke,
and Steinheimer, 2007, p. 36) This week's observation gave me information that worked well with
anecdotal notes. This week's math lesson focused on using language terms for measurement and
quantity. To help the children get focused for a longer group lesson, Maestra Diaz did some
exercises counting by tens. She also slipped them into a quick introduction into counting by two's .
The children then had the opportunity to watch a video book on Chrisantemo (Chrysanthemum).
Maestra Diaz then led the discussion from the story to discuss different lengths in names and that
each of our names are special for us, and are unique just like we are. We compared and counted
many names in English and in Spanish and even compared the lengths of each name if it changed
from language to language. The children were

Standardized Testing
The typical test that grades the progress students make with their studies, and serve as a basis in
order for teachers to know whether or not a student comprehends the lessons, as well as being able
to better help those students that seem to be struggling. While traditional testing is a commonality
among most educational professionals some, if not most, states and counties are intrinsical to high–
stake testing which is widely known as standardized testing. There are many positive outcomes
pertaining to high–stake testing, in the interim, there can be negative ramifications as well. In the
articles, it was found that the presence of both stances were strong, and its debates were concise,
recognizable, and justifiable. It has been said that ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
These sub–groups can include data on ethnicity, socioeconomic status, special needs, etc. This
provides schools with data to develop programs and services directed at improving scores in these
sub–groups. They are objective in nature. Classroom grades given by a teacher are at the very least
minimally subjective in nature. Standardized tests are often scored by computers or at the very least
scored by people who do not directly know the student. They are also developed by experts and each
question undergoes an intense process to remove bias. These measures also give teachers guidance
to help them determine what to teach students and when to teach it. The net result is less wasted
instructional time and a simplified way of timeline management. Furthermore, the standardized test
gives valuable insight into broader issues, such as the standard curriculum important to grade level
requirements, and an education reference point for fair and equitable education for all children in all
schools – district by district and state by state. This can also lead to better teaching skills, as teachers
will be held accountable to help their students meet these standards. Student growth can be a very
significant outcome of standardized tests, for though a child may return a low score he may show a
growth pattern that is positive. These tests are but one tool that a teacher uses to diagnose her
students' teaching needs, so that an individual and child–centered curriculum can be developed.
Ultimately, the benefit of standardized testing lies in the test's capability to quickly and presumably
efficiently score, measure, and conceptualize a variable. Tests serve many purposes: They chart
progress. They identify strengths and weaknesses. They help professionals reach competency in
their careers. All these measures are critical to improving public schools. After all, the children

The Requirements Of The Nclb Act Failing
Another example of the NCLB Act failing in the area of funding is seen in a Mexican–American
school, located Houston, Texas, which does not have a library, lab equipment, or an adequate
number of textbooks. This is because they are not receiving funding, because the school is being
penalized for failing to improve test scores to meet AYP. The school board and administration
cannot meet the needs to improve the resources for learning, thus cannot improve the overall test
scores at the school. However, the administration does spend $20,000 for commercial test–
preparation books and other testing materials in an effort to meet the AYP (Ellis 228). With a focus
solely on raising test scores and not the actual learning process, their school will continue in this
cycle of low test scores and lacking resources.
However, even if the federal government met the financial obligations to fully fund NCLB, and
remove harsh sanctions for schools which do not meet AYP standards, it still would not fix the
problem of NCLB focusing solely on teaching to the test. Under the NCLB Act teaching has gone
from learning about a wide array to subjects to a "drill and kill" system (Smyth 134). A drill and kill
system is when teachers solely focus on teaching to the test by giving assessment after assessment.
When teachers teach to the test and require students to only regurgitate information, the students are
not using higher level thinking skills. The students are only learning how to take test,

Standardized Testing Should Not Be Banned Essay
Standardized testing has been used in the United States for years while its role in education has
expanded by the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001. Standardized testing was created to promote
equality within the education system; to treat and teach all students the same. The use of this test
was also meant to measure the students ' progress in math and reading, as well as to determine a
student promotion to the next grade; but at what cost? Preparation for standardized tests is almost
twenty–four–seven, every year from third grade to eighth grade. The preparation that takes up
valuable learning time in school. The preparation that is a waste to the students ' future in college
and life beyond school. Standardized testing seems to demand so much from schools; not to mention
its impending threat on schools to label them with bad reputations or closing them down. With such
a threat breathing down the necks of the school 's encouragement to cut quality education to meet
the standards to 'survive ' is tempting. Teachers would teach primary to the favor of the test and, if
given the opportunity, schools would scandalously claim and put their low–scoring students in
special education programs to exempt them from taking the test. Standardized testing is damaging
our biggest number one priority; which is our education, an important factor that strongly impacts
the children of our future! Standardized testing takes so much from students, schools, and authentic,

Evaluation Of A Student Learning Objectives
The assessment that was created for this unit is based on three goals. These goals include federal,
state, and district testing initiatives. They also are to provide accurate and timely data regarding
testing purposes, procedures, and results to the school and staff members. The Unit 5 Curriculum
incorporates all the Student Learning Objectives (SLO), intended for six weeks of instruction. Each
unit contains the content of the grade that can be taught to proficiency by the end of the unit. The
assessment allows for measuring student proficiency of those targeted skills as the year of
instruction progresses. Assessment procedures are not only used to evaluate student success but can
also be used to evaluate the curriculum itself. Essentially, by assessing our students, we are also
evaluating the curriculum. There are two categories assessments can be placed into; traditional and
alternative. Both assessment approaches can prove useful in different ways. Traditional assessment
includes multiple choice, true/false, matching, and completion tests. With the constant push towards
raising statewide test scores it is hard to create a curriculum without having this in mind. At the
elementary school level, students are required to take the PARCC assessment. Alternative
assessments may include student projects, portfolios of collected work samples, and real problem
solving activities. Alternative assessment is being used a lot more today than in previous years.

The Importance Of Curriculum Based Assessment
Curriculum based assessment (CBA) is an assessment process that links curriculum content with
assessment. The purposes for CBA is to cultivate effective lesson plans, evaluate students'
development in the curriculum, and to determine eligibility (source 1). CBA helps teachers and other
professional specify instructional objectives. Due to direct links between instruction and assessment,
CBA is often used as a frequent measure to determine if changes should be made in curriculum or
the teaching (source1). Intervention, data gathering, and clarification are essential components of
CBA. According to United Stated Department of Education, The No Child Left Behind Act of 2001
(NCLB) measures districts accountability through the implementation of data collection and report
cards (United Department of Education, n.d.). Mississippi Department of Education (MDE) must
meets NCLB reporting requirements by using report cards to collect and report data about
Mississippi schools and districts academic assessments in English and language arts, reading, math,
adequate yearly progression, funding, and qualifications of teachers (Mississippi Department of
Education, 2012). According author Dylan Williams (2011), assessments are an essential component
of effective instruction tracing back from early experiments in the individualization of learning
works of Benjamin Bloom in which reviews the impact of learner's views in the classrooms

My Outlook On Student Assessment
One aspect of teaching that I find particularly challenging in my career is student assessment. It is a
gray area that is constantly being analyzed and transformed by myself, colleagues, administrators
and the educational community as a whole. As Huhn states, "assessment means being keenly aware
of what students know and understand, having sufficient evidence of this understanding, and
offering a grade that accurately reflects this." As a Kindergarten teacher my outlook on student
assessment varies greatly from many other grade level teachers. I view student assessment as an
ongoing journey, not a final destination. I feel fortunate that I am not forced to assign points and
letter grades to quantify student achievement. As a district ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Validity and reliability are cornerstones to this type of classroom. It is critical for teachers to ensure
student assessments used in the classroom possess these qualities. Valid assessments require
accurate feedback and exactness of the teacher's inferences about a student's ability. Reliable
assessments must be both repeatable and dependable. On the assessment continuum there are three
types of assessment that can be delivered to students. Each of these categories of assessments serves
a different purpose. Diagnostic assessments are given before learning occurs. This type of
assessment is used to identify where the students are at in learning right now, as well as any
misconceptions they may have. Diagnostic assessments are critical to gathering student information
to help teachers plan content to be taught, as well as to differentiate their instruction. Examples of
diagnostic assessments would be prior knowledge and skill checks and learning preference surveys.
Formative assessments are used while learning is taking place. The aim of this type of assessment is
to improve student learning, not just measure it. These assessments can be both formal and informal,
and may include quizzes, oral questioning, teacher observations, and think–alouds. Although these
assessments are used to evaluate students learning and progress, they should not be factored into a
student's grade. Formative assessments should be used by teachers to guide instruction to

What's Wrong with Standardized Testing
According to Kxan News "Each year, thousands of Texas students don't graduate high school
because they can't pass the required standardized tests."(Prazan) These standardized tests are
supposed to be used to show the level of academic improvement within each individual student.
However, various students who may do well in school and pass all of their classes have ended up
failing the state test, which can lead to them not graduating on time. The materials that make up

materials for molding and sculpting (clay, playdough, tools), cutting and pasting materials (scissors,

classroom also has to do with the group numbers that the children are working in and the location in
which they are working in. According to Dominic F. Gullo, from the article "Teaching and learning
in the Kindergarten Year" there are three things that Kindergarten teachers have to understand in
order to make learning effective. One of those three things is that "kindergarten teachers must know
their specific children–what they are like as a group, as well as their individual needs, interests,
learning styles, and cultures (Gullo, n.d.)." Meaning that not every child will work the same way
when he is put in a big group or individually. A whole group acvity is an activity that all of the
children are working on together. In a Kindergarten classroom, this can usually mean doing circle
time or morning circle or out loud reading. While doing a whole group activity the children will be

Kaylene is currently a year three teacher in an Independent Public school. At this school teachers are expected to collect baseline data at the beginning of each year on the students they have in their class, some of the information is retrieved from the previous year's assessment records, giving teachers a starting point. • 2. Falls Church City 's Local Plan For The Education Of The... Falls Church City's Local Plan for the Education of the Gifted can be found at the following address: https://docs.google.com/a/fccps.org/file/d/0B7vaFg7PcgKyTGs3T3NZcGtaRjQ/edit I evaluated the information in the document above based upon Moon's (2013) nine measures to consider in comprehensive gifted education program. I think that FCCPS does a considerably good job addressing these nine guidelines. However, I believe they should consider more non– standardized materials and data while considering students for identification. 1. Multiple assessments should be given to represent the categories of giftedness identified in the district's definition (Moon, 2013, p.133). According to the FCCPS definition of giftedness, the will "screen to identify and to appropriately place student with specific aptitudes and achievement in the pertinent and academically advances programs (...Language Arts, Mathematics)". Students must receive between the 93rd–99th percentiles on Specific Academic Aptitude assessments, or the average of their scores must be between the 93rd and 99th percentiles. FCCPS uses multiple assessments to test for SAA in reading and math including: SAGES, Raven, STAR Math, STAR Reading, CogATs, and the SOLs (FCCPS, Local Plan for the Education of the Gifted, p. 7). 2 & 3. Use the most current versions of standardized tests that are going to be used to make a decision about admission into a gifted program and that norms are up–to–date and a good representation of ... • 5. Case Study : ' The Workplace ' Joe Pacifico BUS 164 July 14th, 2015 Case Study #1 In the workplace, there are a number of different influence strategies that are essential when it comes to effective leadership practices. The concepts related to social proofs and reciprocation are common strategies that are used by many well known leaders in business. In basic terms reciprocation would refer to a repayment of a gesture. Typically reciprocation comes with ulterior motives when conducted by business minded individuals. With that being said, these motives can be related to making new connections or barters made in the sales of products or services. Reciprocation has its benefits, but those benefits might not directly impact one party initially at the time of an exchange. In terms of networking, one in business might entertain prospective clients to a nice dining experience. Furthermore, a $400 steak dinner has the potential to be a great investment as it is an opportunity for one to market their social proofs to others in the hopes of gaining future business. Social proofs are another important business strategy. This influence strategy is related to factors that influence everyday decision making. In other words, under the ideologies of social proofs individuals tend to make different choices based on previous decisions that were made by others. The reasoning for this is the fact that there is the assumption those whom encompass a similar decision made a choice that is universally accepted by all. For ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 6. Mdde 602: Analyzing Quantitative Data Analysis The first artefact for my portfolio is Assignment 2 in Mdde 602, titled: Analyzing Quantitative Data. Part two of this assignment included an Excel spreadsheet which displayed the data. This assignment consisted of an Excel data spreadsheet containing multiple sets of data to perform the statistical analysis. The second component consisted of creating a response document on Microsoft Word in order to record the written answers to the assignment problem. The solution to each problem was only possible to solve after performing the data analysis in the Excel sheet first. The most challenging and exciting part of this assignment was explaining the concept to a person who had no understating of statistics and breaking down the material to be easily comprehensible. Reflection and Competencies Reflecting back on this artefact, it was an excellent opportunity for me to tackle quantitative research, analyze data and refresh my Microsoft Excel skills in terms of formulas, graphing, and then being able to explain that data. This was not easy as all the data had to be explained in writing and typed clearly for the reader to make sense of it. Taking a Look at State Testing State Testing State testing is damaging youth by pressuring students to succeed. failure is not an option for the teachers and the parents "Tests today are not like the tests most parents took when they were in school. New forms of teaching students' work are already in use, and even more changes will be coming in the years ahead. The term "assessment" has come into common use to describe these new ways of measuring students' accomplishments. Tests and assessments perform several vital roles in the education process. They are used most frequently to help students, teachers, schools, and parents know that students learned and what they still need to study. Teachers can use information from assessments to design lesson that meet the needs of their students. School districts and states use assessment results to evaluate whether they are meeting their goals. Assessments also are used by policy–makers accountability to help gauge the effectiveness of programs and schools. Finally, assessments are helpful for transitions. They can show if students are ready to begin a new grade level, or to enter a particular college. Tests are sometimes used–along with other information– to help decide if students should be placed in special programs. Standardized aptitude and achievement tests still have a major influence on what students are taught. A Research Study On Finance And Economics Two years ago while I offered a research job at Cambridge in applied economics, one of my friends jokingly quipped that one day I would be the next Raghuram Rajan, who had just taken over as the Governor of the Reserve Bank of India following his academic position. I smiled as I had then not considered the possibility of becoming an academic who could wield such power in designing policies to govern the financial institution of the world 's largest democracy. In retrospect, this does not seem very far from the truth with respect to my long–term career goals. I consider it a privilege to contribute meaningful work that would improve the financial standards in my country. Standardized tests have both positive and negative uses as they pertain to obtaining information and what that information can be used for. The use of portfolios can also be used to guide instruction, and they can be used as informal or summative assessments. The use of both the standardized test as well as a student portfolio will give the teacher information that can be used to assess how well they are instructing as well as what areas they may still need more work in. These tests are designed to test a student's knowledge on certain set standards that a child should know given what grade level that student is in. As to holding teachers and schools accountable, I believe this is where the biggest downfall of standardized testing lies. To hold a teacher accountable I believe that more than the test scores need to be looked at. An article in a Buffalo, New York newspaper supports my stance on this. One–third of high school students miss at least 20 percent of school days in a given year – the equivalent of seven weeks of school, according to a recent study by the district. And more than two out of five kindergartners miss more than three weeks of school. (Pasciak, 2011) When students miss that much school, it does not matter how good a teacher is, that student will not do well. As to one of the opponents views, stated by Chris Mercogliano about President Bush's NCLB act; "His dubiously noble sentiments notwithstanding, extensive and well–documented research demonstrates that the only things standardized test actually measure are income levels and socio–economic status" (Mercogliano, Autumn2004, Issue 22, p. ... • 18. Validity Of The Assessment Information Essay Validity Validity is an overarching term referring to the accuracy and appropriateness of the specific uses of assessment information, its soundness and fairness of the assessments interpretations and the consequences of how the assessment information is used (Miller, Linn & Gronlund, 2009). Validity cannot be measured on an absolute scale (Darr, 2005). Thus it is measured by a matter of degree (high, medium and low), the higher the stakes of the assessment the higher the validity needed in the assessment. The validity of an assessment, is always considered in relation to the intended purpose or use of the assessment evidence. To justify the adequacy and appropriateness of the interpretations and uses of the assessment Darr (2005) states that 4 major unitary aspects need to be considered – content, construct, criterion, and consequential – in order to make an overall evaluative judgement. Content consideration is concerned with the link between the assessment content and the particular learning intentions of the topic, unit or focus of learning. Construct considerations focus on how well the assessment tasks represent the relevant skill or skills being assessed for example, comprehension and problem solving. Criterion considerations focus on the correlation of the way different tasks, with the same conditions of success, are used to judge the students abilities. Consequential considerations are aimed at figuring out the effects of the assessment and the decisions made based ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 23. Assessment Of Special Education Is A Problem Solving Process There are various methods of assessment used in special education, but before this paper delves into that the definition of assessment must be discussed. An assessment in special education is a process that involves collecting information about a student for the purpose of making decisions (Macy, 2007). When this definition is deconstructed, we have to ask the question, "What is a process?" A process is a series of actions that bring about a result. It is a step–by–step series of actions that bring about a result and in special education, what we find is that assessment is primarily a problem– solving process. There are kids in classrooms, for instance, who are reading very poorly, having difficulty functioning in class, and who are struggling each day. We have to figure out what is going on here, what is actually happening and is there anything we can do to improve their quality of life. Again, the purpose of assessment in special education is primarily a problem–solving process that addresses these issues (Macy, 2007). Special education educators have to collect a lot of information about the student that make it relevant to making classification decisions as well as educational decisions. This is the key piece here. Ultimately in special education, educators have to make numerous decisions, for example, they have to make decisions on whether or not the student is going to meet the eligibility standards for special education, they have to make decisions regarding the ... Introduction Within us all is a desire to achieve. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The study of motivation has been influenced by various psychological theories. Each of these theories state different sources of motivational needs, and each have certain drawbacks. Let us examine some of these theories that have developed over the years. Behavioral views Behavioral views of motivation concentrate on extrinsic factors (external rewards or punishments) and reinforcement of desired behaviors (based on John Watsons' mechanistic concept that behaviors could be totally described in terms of observable responses to certain stimuli). An extrinsically motivated student performs "in order to obtain some reward (good grades, teacher approval, etc.) or avoid some punishment external to the activity itself," as opposed to a student who is intrinsically motivated and undertakes an activity "for its own sake, for the enjoyment it provides, the learning it permits, or the feelings of accomplishment it evokes" (Lepper, 1988). B.F. Skinner's operant conditioning theory proposes that the voluntary responses of people are strengthened when reinforced by rewards and weakened when they are ignored or punished. Related to students, Skinner developed programmed instruction, in which students were given positive reinforcement for correct responses, motivating the student to proceed with desired consequences. For successful implementation of a programme, the supervisor has to look into the diverse backgrounds of the children. According to DAP (2009), "Development and learning occur in and are influenced by multiple social and cultural contexts". The supervisor has to understand that children's development requires viewing each child within the sociocultural context of the child's family, educational setting, community and the society. The contexts are interrelated thus, they all strongly influence how the child develops. Celebrating different festivals together as a centre and talking about different cultural backgrounds during lessons are a good way to include children from various cultural backgrounds. While implementing a programme, the supervisor might come across children from dysfunctional families. Providing the proper financial assistance to these families is very important. Centre–based Financial Assistance for Childcare (CFAC) can be arranged for children who come from dysfunctional families. This scheme helps eligible families to offset childcare fees of their children every month. The government also gives childcare subsidies to working parents who enrol their children in childcare centres. (MCYS) Parents of children from dysfunctional families might find these two schemes helpful in providing their children with proper early childhood education. The Dynamic Learning Program works on the principle of "learning is by doing", it is student– centered, it's a system of teaching that focuses on student activity rather than on traditional classroom lectures. The set–up is 70% student activity–30% lecture/discussion, and usually national experts do the majority of the lectures via video. The students learn independently, because each activity is provided with a clear, learning target. The student will try to understand the lesson on their own by reading the concept notes and by doing the exercises before the lesson is discussed and explained. • 33. The Observation Was On Math The observation was on math again and in group lesson form shortly after 11 in the morning. My host teacher finds this time best for her students because it is after recess and lunch. Practicing with documentation in anecdotal notes with photographs was an effective way to get individual information in assessing each student's learning in comparison to just observation notes or relying solely on pictures. Anecdotal records provide a different context of notes in its specialization typically for one student and for its form in being objective based in preparation, introduction, and reflection. "They allow the teacher to bring the child's learning experience to life." (Helm, Beneke, and Steinheimer, 2007, p. 36) This week's observation gave me information that worked well with anecdotal notes. This week's math lesson focused on using language terms for measurement and quantity. To help the children get focused for a longer group lesson, Maestra Diaz did some exercises counting by tens. She also slipped them into a quick introduction into counting by two's . The children then had the opportunity to watch a video book on Chrisantemo (Chrysanthemum). Maestra Diaz then led the discussion from the story to discuss different lengths in names and that each of our names are special for us, and are unique just like we are. We compared and counted many names in English and in Spanish and even compared the lengths of each name if it changed from language to language. The children were ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 34. Standardized Testing The typical test that grades the progress students make with their studies, and serve as a basis in order for teachers to know whether or not a student comprehends the lessons, as well as being able to better help those students that seem to be struggling. While traditional testing is a commonality among most educational professionals some, if not most, states and counties are intrinsical to high– stake testing which is widely known as standardized testing. There are many positive outcomes pertaining to high–stake testing, in the interim, there can be negative ramifications as well. In the articles, it was found that the presence of both stances were strong, and its debates were concise, recognizable, and justifiable. It has been said that ... These sub–groups can include data on ethnicity, socioeconomic status, special needs, etc. This provides schools with data to develop programs and services directed at improving scores in these sub–groups. They are objective in nature. Classroom grades given by a teacher are at the very least minimally subjective in nature. Standardized tests are often scored by computers or at the very least scored by people who do not directly know the student. They are also developed by experts and each question undergoes an intense process to remove bias. These measures also give teachers guidance to help them determine what to teach students and when to teach it. The net result is less wasted instructional time and a simplified way of timeline management. Furthermore, the standardized test gives valuable insight into broader issues, such as the standard curriculum important to grade level requirements, and an education reference point for fair and equitable education for all children in all schools – district by district and state by state. This can also lead to better teaching skills, as teachers will be held accountable to help their students meet these standards. Student growth can be a very significant outcome of standardized tests, for though a child may return a low score he may show a growth pattern that is positive. These tests are but one tool that a teacher uses to diagnose her students' teaching needs, so that an individual and child–centered curriculum can be developed. Ultimately, the benefit of standardized testing lies in the test's capability to quickly and presumably efficiently score, measure, and conceptualize a variable. Tests serve many purposes: They chart progress. They identify strengths and weaknesses. They help professionals reach competency in their careers. All these measures are critical to improving public schools. After all, the children sitting in classrooms today are going to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 35. The Requirements Of The Nclb Act Failing Another example of the NCLB Act failing in the area of funding is seen in a Mexican–American school, located Houston, Texas, which does not have a library, lab equipment, or an adequate number of textbooks. This is because they are not receiving funding, because the school is being penalized for failing to improve test scores to meet AYP. The school board and administration cannot meet the needs to improve the resources for learning, thus cannot improve the overall test scores at the school. However, the administration does spend $20,000 for commercial test– preparation books and other testing materials in an effort to meet the AYP (Ellis 228). With a focus solely on raising test scores and not the actual learning process, their school will continue in this cycle of low test scores and lacking resources. However, even if the federal government met the financial obligations to fully fund NCLB, and remove harsh sanctions for schools which do not meet AYP standards, it still would not fix the problem of NCLB focusing solely on teaching to the test. Under the NCLB Act teaching has gone from learning about a wide array to subjects to a "drill and kill" system (Smyth 134). A drill and kill system is when teachers solely focus on teaching to the test by giving assessment after assessment. When teachers teach to the test and require students to only regurgitate information, the students are not using higher level thinking skills. The students are only learning how to take test, ... Standardized Testing Should Not Be Banned Essay Standardized testing has been used in the United States for years while its role in education has expanded by the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001. Standardized testing was created to promote equality within the education system; to treat and teach all students the same. The use of this test was also meant to measure the students ' progress in math and reading, as well as to determine a student promotion to the next grade; but at what cost? Preparation for standardized tests is almost twenty–four–seven, every year from third grade to eighth grade. The preparation that takes up valuable learning time in school. The preparation that is a waste to the students ' future in college and life beyond school. Standardized testing seems to demand so much from schools; not to mention its impending threat on schools to label them with bad reputations or closing them down. With such a threat breathing down the necks of the school 's encouragement to cut quality education to meet the standards to 'survive ' is tempting. Teachers would teach primary to the favor of the test and, if given the opportunity, schools would scandalously claim and put their low–scoring students in special education programs to exempt them from taking the test. Standardized testing is damaging our biggest number one priority; which is our education, an important factor that strongly impacts the children of our future! • 37. Evaluation Of A Student Learning Objectives The assessment that was created for this unit is based on three goals. These goals include federal, state, and district testing initiatives. They also are to provide accurate and timely data regarding testing purposes, procedures, and results to the school and staff members. The Unit 5 Curriculum incorporates all the Student Learning Objectives (SLO), intended for six weeks of instruction. Each unit contains the content of the grade that can be taught to proficiency by the end of the unit. The assessment allows for measuring student proficiency of those targeted skills as the year of instruction progresses. Assessment procedures are not only used to evaluate student success but can also be used to evaluate the curriculum itself. Essentially, by assessing our students, we are also evaluating the curriculum. There are two categories assessments can be placed into; traditional and alternative. Both assessment approaches can prove useful in different ways. Traditional assessment includes multiple choice, true/false, matching, and completion tests. With the constant push towards raising statewide test scores it is hard to create a curriculum without having this in mind. At the elementary school level, students are required to take the PARCC assessment. Alternative assessments may include student projects, portfolios of collected work samples, and real problem solving activities. Alternative assessment is being used a lot more today than in previous years. Although the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 38. The Importance Of Curriculum Based Assessment Curriculum based assessment (CBA) is an assessment process that links curriculum content with assessment. The purposes for CBA is to cultivate effective lesson plans, evaluate students' development in the curriculum, and to determine eligibility (source 1). CBA helps teachers and other professional specify instructional objectives. Due to direct links between instruction and assessment, CBA is often used as a frequent measure to determine if changes should be made in curriculum or the teaching (source1). Intervention, data gathering, and clarification are essential components of CBA. According to United Stated Department of Education, The No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 (NCLB) measures districts accountability through the implementation of data collection and report cards (United Department of Education, n.d.). Mississippi Department of Education (MDE) must meets NCLB reporting requirements by using report cards to collect and report data about Mississippi schools and districts academic assessments in English and language arts, reading, math, adequate yearly progression, funding, and qualifications of teachers (Mississippi Department of Education, 2012). According author Dylan Williams (2011), assessments are an essential component of effective instruction tracing back from early experiments in the individualization of learning works of Benjamin Bloom in which reviews the impact of learner's views in the classrooms (source2). ... • 40. My Outlook On Student Assessment One aspect of teaching that I find particularly challenging in my career is student assessment. It is a gray area that is constantly being analyzed and transformed by myself, colleagues, administrators and the educational community as a whole. As Huhn states, "assessment means being keenly aware of what students know and understand, having sufficient evidence of this understanding, and offering a grade that accurately reflects this." As a Kindergarten teacher my outlook on student assessment varies greatly from many other grade level teachers. I view student assessment as an ongoing journey, not a final destination. I feel fortunate that I am not forced to assign points and letter grades to quantify student achievement. As a district ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Validity and reliability are cornerstones to this type of classroom. It is critical for teachers to ensure student assessments used in the classroom possess these qualities. Valid assessments require accurate feedback and exactness of the teacher's inferences about a student's ability. Reliable assessments must be both repeatable and dependable. On the assessment continuum there are three types of assessment that can be delivered to students. Each of these categories of assessments serves a different purpose. Diagnostic assessments are given before learning occurs. This type of assessment is used to identify where the students are at in learning right now, as well as any misconceptions they may have. Diagnostic assessments are critical to gathering student information to help teachers plan content to be taught, as well as to differentiate their instruction. Examples of diagnostic assessments would be prior knowledge and skill checks and learning preference surveys. Formative assessments are used while learning is taking place. The aim of this type of assessment is to improve student learning, not just measure it. These assessments can be both formal and informal, and may include quizzes, oral questioning, teacher observations, and think–alouds. Although these assessments are used to evaluate students learning and progress, they should not be factored into a student's grade. Is Standardized Testing Wrong What's Wrong with Standardized Testing According to Kxan News "Each year, thousands of Texas students don't graduate high school because they can't pass the required standardized tests."(Prazan) These standardized tests are supposed to be used to show the level of academic improvement within each individual student. However, various students who may do well in school and pass all of their classes have ended up failing the state test, which can lead to them not graduating on time. The materials that make up these tests are not always relevant to what should be needed for a student to move on to the next grade in the first place, which is why they should not be the deciding factor on a student's academic future. Performance assessments are different from standardized testing because instead of students sitting for hours and answering application questions with the choices of A,B,C, or D students will physically demonstrate what they have learned.(Performance Based Assessment) Under performance assessments, students will be able to demonstrate their knowledge through such tasks as group projects, writing essays, performing experiments and giving them and showing the teachers they comprehend the subject. (Performance Based Assessment) The key factors in this process, is that performance assessments require kids to be active participants and have them comprehend how to get to the answer by demonstrating their knowledge. (Performance Based Assessment) In this way teachers will be provided "with more information about the learning needs of their students and [will be able to] modify their methods to meet these needs."(Performance Based Assessment) This process "also allows students to assess their own progress and, therefore, be more responsible for their education." The set up of the classroom also has to do with the group numbers that the children are working in and the location in which they are working in. According to Dominic F. Gullo, from the article "Teaching and learning in the Kindergarten Year" there are three things that Kindergarten teachers have to understand in order to make learning effective. One of those three things is that "kindergarten teachers must know their specific children–what they are like as a group, as well as their individual needs, interests, learning styles, and cultures (Gullo, n.d.)." Meaning that not every child will work the same way when he is put in a big group or individually. A whole group acvity is an activity that all of the children are working on together. In a Kindergarten classroom, this can usually mean doing circle time or morning circle or out loud reading. While doing a whole group activity the children will be practicing different skills such as "social and academic skills, speaking to a group about their experiences, listening to their classmates and responding appropriately with questions or comments, working cooperatively, and using and processing new information (Gullo, n.d.)."
