The Effect Of Arthropods On Our Earth
Introduction
Arthropods are fundamental animals to life on earth. For example, many of these arthropods help
plants pollinate. Others can carry diseases from host to host, but their success story is due to how
long they have been present on earth. This has led the high diversity within the phylum Arthropoda,
with more than ten million different species, making up more than eighty percent of the organisms
in kingdom Animalia. This only includes classified species; it is believed millions of other species
exists, but have not been discovered. These arthropods can be found in various places; for example
most are terrestrial and others are aquatic (Hickman and Roberts, 1994) . Evolution has helped them
to conquer the skies as well. A reason as to why it is believed unclassified species exist is because
they may live in remote areas, such as deep in a tropical rainforests.
The arthropods share many characteristics facilitating their mass divergence. First of all they are
part of kingdom Animalia; characteristics that make an arthropod an animal consist of being
multicellular organism lacking cell walls. Their bodies consist of true tissue for sensory and
movement, which aids in activities such as finding food and finding a mate. Arthropods' bodies have
three germ layers, or triploblastic. These germ layers consist of an endoderm, mesoderm, and an
ectoderm. The endoderm develops into the digestive organs; the ectoderm develops into muscular
tissue, and the ectoderm into the

Brown Recluse Spider Research Paper
Did you know that a spider's bite actually doesn't kill you? The bite causes side effects that can lead
up to death if untreated. The brown recluse spider prefers to live and hide in dark corners, and even
places inside your own home, they live under furniture, boxes, and books. The brown recluse's
behavior tends to be shy rather than aggressive. The brown recluse spider only bite when they feel
disturbed or when they are touched. More common attacks by the brown recluse are from clothing.
For example when you put shoes on the brown recluse may be inside your shoe where they decide
to live and they will bite to defend themselves before they are crushed to death. The brown recluse
spider's web consists of a loose and irregular yet extremely sticky ... Show more content on

The camel spider can be as big as a dinner plate with its legs widespread. The camel spider excludes
itself from sunlight during the daytime, it is said that when the camel spider is resting and it is
disturbed it will jump two feet high behind your shadow. The camel spider can be found mainly in
the middle eastern deserts. This being the reason it is called "desert spider" other names are "wind
spider" or "wind scorpion". Because of the sound the camel spider makes when running. And "sun

Spidery In Brazil
A spider from Brazil takes more than an agonizing bite that sends most casualties to the doctor's
clinic. Its venom invigorates an erection that lasts for an hour and sometimes, longer. Lately,
researchers have finally discovered the compound that causes male's private organ to get super
erected.
In Brazil, staff from an emergency section can quickly recognize the people that are bitten by this
Brazilian spidery. Patients not only undergo an excruciating torment and an elevated blood pressure,
an uncomfortable erection will always be present to these victims as well.
"The erection is a reaction that everyone who gets stung by this arachnid will encounter alongside
the torment and distress," as stated by researcher team colleague Romulo ... Show more content on

"They have to be fully relaxed so the blood will freely flow inside and that is how you get an
erection, because of the fact that the blood gets flown and trapped into the reproductive organ."
However, an erection does not last for a very very long time. The potency destroyer, a substance
called PDE–5 separates the cGMP and thus changes the erect reproductive organ into its ordinary
flacid state.
The most prominent impotency medications are Viagra, Cialis and Levtra–works by hindering this
potency destroyer substance.
The arachnid's substance works in a different way, influencing a prior stride in the erection
procedure. Some way or another, the toxins elevates the number of nitric oxide, which kind of sets
the movement of an erection. The researchers propose that a mixture of a manufactured variant of
the spider's venom with a medication like Viagra would bring about an amplified impact.
"So the blend of the two medications could be much more proficient in patients that do not react
well to Viagra," Leite

Overview Of Jon Genty: The Engines Of Our Ingenuity
The Engines of our Ingenuity: No. 1069: A Spider's Web by Jon Genty The Engines of our Ingenuity
is brought to you by the Friends of KUHF Today, we're giving arachnids a run for their money. The
University of Houston's college of engineering presents this series about the machines that make our
civilization run, and the people whose ingenuity created them. Next time you brush away a cobweb,
consider what you're brushing. The diameter of a strand is around 1/10,000 of an inch. Human hair
has 30 times the diameter and a thousand times the cross–sectional area. It's the difference between
thread and rope. However, this "thread" is stronger than steel and can stretch to 140 percent of its
length. At the same time, it's inelastic, absorbing ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
And with this latest development we introduce the likely applications in "microfabrication of
complex structures, reversible micro–motors or self–tensioned stretchable systems" (Elettro, 2016).
Through these advances, the researchers demonstrate the potential of this technology to alter nearly
every facet of our everyday lives. I'm Jon Genty, at the University of Houston, where we're

Arthropods Lab Report
Universal Statement: There 5 classes of Arthropods. There are the Myriapods, Trilobites,
Chelicerates, Crustaceans, and Insects. The Myriapods are many footed and have one to two pairs of
appendages per body segment. They are the centipedes and millipedes. Trilobites are extinct and we
only have their fossils. Chelicerates are the Arachnids and anything with eight legs. Crustaceans are
the crabs and anything with ten or more legs. The insects are the ones with 3 pairs of legs and body
regions. They all have a segmented body plan, exoskeleton composed of chitin, bilateral symmetry,
and paired jointed appendages. In our lab we were trying to identify and label the internal and
external anatomy of a grasshopper from the class insecta. 1 Re–do

Pentecopterus Research Paper
Correction: The six–foot–long predatory scorpion is not currently terrorizing Iowa. But it used to,
about 467 million years ago, back when Iowa was an ocean.
While excavating a meteorite crater in northeastern Iowa's Winneshiek Shale, paleontologists
discovered the fossil of an enormous and bizarre ancient scorpion species that lived in the ocean. It
is now believed to be Planet Earth's earliest large predator. The findings were published in the
journal BMC Evolutionary Biology on August 31st, 2015.
"Tick...I Am Your Father" – Darth Pentecopterus
Researchers named the new–old species Pentecopterus decorahensis after it's many–legged body's
resemblance to an ancient Greek war ship, the pentecopter. ("Decorahensis" presumably means

Similarly to the Pentecopterus, it terrorized shallow waters, preying on fish, crustaceans, and other
eurypterids. But it had two key differences: one, the Jaekelopterus lived in fresh water, invalidating
the common moniker "sea scorpion" for all eurypterids. (Don't make that mistake again!) Two, more
importantly, the Jaekelopterus is quite young, a mere 390 million years old. The earlier glory days of
the Pentercopterus, about 467 million years ago, extends previous estimates of how long eurypterids
ruled Earth's waters.
What Could Have Vanquished Such Glorious Creatures?
Why, none other than the Permian–Triassic extinction event 252 million years ago, the planet's most
severe extinction. The dinosaurs were just the highest–profile casualty of this event (possibly a
meteor impact, possibly a volcanic event, theories abound), which wiped out 70% of all terrestrial
species and 96% of all marine species. (Read those numbers again.)
It took at least 10 million years for life to recover to pre–event levels. If catastrophe hadn't struck, I
could have been a super–intelligent Pentecopterus, writing this article right now, about how my
species wiped out the dim–witted Jaekelopterus 252 million years ago with cunning technological

Personal Narrative-Arachnid Analysis
I enjoy and am talented at paperfolding. It is hard for me to say whether hundreds of hours of
origami or hands and a brain well built for it allowed me to develop abilities such as folding
blindfolded, memorizing complex designs, and visualizing detailed folding sequences.
Origami artists defy the constraint of only being able to fold paper in the most spectacular way
possible. Insects are a coveted form that have lots of long, spindly appendages –– a perfect foil to
the "no cuts" constraint. When I was younger, my dream was to design origami bugs. When I was
nine, I invented a simple arachnid. I created dozens of other arthropods in middle school. I began to
use computer–assisted and mathematical techniques to refine my many–appendaged designs.

Why Are Myths Still Relevant To Today
Myths still endure today, because it sets a moral cod, explains natural phenomenon, and entertains
the reader. One reason mythology sill endures is because it sets a moral code for future people to
follow. For example in the story Achene, the wise goddess Athena turns Arachne into a arachnid,
because Arachne was being very cocky, arrogant, and rude, cause Athena to kick Arachne off her
"high horse". Athena tells Arachne to "live on wicked girl, live on and spin you and your decedents"
(Coolidge 51). A second reason mythology is still relevant is because is explains natural
phenomenon. For example in the story Pandora, Curiosity truly kills the cat because Pandora opens
a "do not open" box, which releases all the terrible things in this world,

How To Get Rid Of Bed Mites
Want to know how to get rid of bed mites?
Also called dust mites, this little intruder is probably not something you have given a lot of thought
to.
However, you may find an improvement in your health if you limit exposure to them.
Sadly, you cannot get rid of bed mites completely. This is impossible, they thrive in so many places
around the home.
Your towels, carpets, furniture, if you have young children they live in their stuffed animals,
clothing and of course the bed.
This is the one place I struggle with, knowing they are in my bed at night.
I can't stand to think about them crawling around while I am trying to get a good nights sleep.
I am a neat freak, and if you are anything like me, and always make a point of making the bed in the
mornings. Welcome to part of the problem. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Don't make the bed in the mornings, pure and simple.
When I first read about why making the bed first thing in the mornings is bad for health. I
immediately rushed upstairs and unmade the bed.
While you sleep you lose skin cells and sweat. Bed mites love this, and you sleep among their
droppings. Makes me shudder.
If the first thing you do in the morning is jump out of bed when the alarm goes off, and go ahead to
make the bed. Getting a well–organised start to the day.

The Ramist Logic of Edward Taylor's Upon a Spider...
The Ramist Logic of Edward Taylor's Upon a Spider Catching a Fly
Like other Puritanical writers of his generation, Edward Taylor looked to nature and utilized it as an
example of a belief system that he had already deemed factual. The use Ramist logic here may seem
irrational to many. The very essence of logic commands that we must first look toward nature and
then draw conclusions from it. In his work, "Upon a Spider Catching a Fly", Taylor applies his
doctrine in advance by using the interaction between an arachnid and a certain contrasting insect as
an example of the Calvinist theory of predestination; the belief that one's fate cannot be influenced
by one's works or earthly deeds. It is also part of his belief system, however, that ... Show more

The reader is then introduced to the wasp who, by some folly, has become entangled in the spider's
treacherous web. Instead of immediately pouncing on the trapped wasp, the spider seems
instinctively aware that the Wasp has the ability to overpower him and therefore maintains a safe
distance. "Lest he should fling/ His sting./ But as afraid, remote/ Didst stand hereat." Instead, the
spider is afraid that if provoked, the wasp would damage his web. "Lest he should pet,/ And in a
froppish, waspish heat/ Should greatly fret Thy net." In a description of the type of retaliation that
would ensue if the wasp is provoked, Taylor opts to use the word "waspish", creating an adjective
from the very noun that he is using it to describe. Through such a choice of grammar, Taylor is
indicating that being a wasp is synonymous with being successfully defensive.
In utter juxtaposition to the "pettish wasp" is "the silly fly, Caught by his leg". Although in a similar
situation to the wasp, the fly is destined for doom. Unlike its foil, it is ill–equipped to defend itself
against the evil spider. The spider, as if innately aware of the fly's weakness, immediately devours
the fly. "Thou by the throat took hastily And 'hind the head Bite dead." The fly never has a chance of
liberation once within the deadly grasp of the spider's web. It is as if it has been created as
defenseless by nature just as the wasp has been created with the

Drumming Wolf Spider
The Wolf spider belongs to the Lycosidae family. They are a part of the Arthropod phylum as they
are characterized by having an exoskeleton, coelom, an open circulatory system and body segments
with jointed appendages. Arthropods evolved by substituting the coelom for a protective
exoskeleton. It was not entirely lost, but still remains in some parts of the reproductive and
excretory systems. (Ruppert et al. 2004) Lycosidae are in the Araneae order as they are arthropods
with four pairs of legs with chelicerae that contains venomous glands. (Ruppert et al. 2004)
A trait obtained through natural selection in Wolf spiders but more specifically Hygrolycosa

The Lycosidae uses its chelicerae to hold its prey before using its venomous fangs into paralysing it.
(Nicholas, 2011) Similarly, snakes inject venom quickly into its prey and waits for it to immobilise
before digesting it, this adaptation prevents preys from escaping and increases its chance of survival.
The Wolf spider and Nursery web spider (Pisauridae) are closely related and both exhibit similar but
different characteristics which highlights the divergences of the species. They both have eight eyes
which puts them in the superfamily Lycosoidea, the Pisauridae has similar sized eyes whilst the wolf
spider has two big eyes at the front and six smaller ones. Their maternal care is also alike; the wolf
spider carries its egg sac from its spinnerets for 4–6 weeks whilst Pisauridae carries its egg sacs in
their chelicerae for 2–3 weeks before building a protective tent to safe guard them in. (Nicholas,
2011).
Since Wolf Spiders are poor dispersers (Marshall et al, 2000), they are likely to be affected by
human activity such as habitat destruction from land clearing, and pesticides used on crops and
grasses. This is likely to affect the Wolf Spider as habitat destruction would not only remove its
home, but also cause the removal of prey

someone or something's downfall. The term nemesis comes from the god of righteous anger,

Widow's Web
Gordon Grice utilizes the black widow spider to elucidate the evils of the world, throughout the
essay "Caught in the Widow's Web." Grice, an essayist, is enchanted by the ways of the arachnid
and hunts the creatures. His vast knowledge on the spiders prevails in an informative tone, but the
writing is slightly eerie, adding depth to the unnerving characterization. Gordon Grice depicts the
black widow as one of the deadliest arachnids and through his use of literary devices and distinct
modes of writing he intertwines the methods of the widow with the evil ways of our world. Grice
implements the modes of description and narration through the identity of the black widow spider to
illustrate his deeper meaning. The author's fascination of the spider is fostered through detailed
explication of the customs of the widow. In paragraph three, Grice informs that once the prey is

The evil in our world is brought into the picture when Grice compares the killing of a black widow
to "an enemy whose death is not sufficient but must be followed by the murder of his children and
the salting of his land and whose unclean remains must not touch our hands"(8). The author directly
compares the disgust of the spider's remnants, after killing it, to the revulsion one experiences after
murdering a human. The ugly webs of the black widow spider correlates to the ugly messes of evil
throughout an individual's life. The widow's web is painted by "messy–looking tangles in the
corners and bends of things and under logs and debris"(2). Humans value order and cleanliness over
disarray, which is equivalent to evil. Grice portrays this through the black widow's webs and their
state of being unkempt. In other words, Grice's metaphor of untidiness compared to disorder and
evil gives the readers another example of how the spider and evil in the world directly

Society's Influence On Greek Culture
Greek culture has influence on all of society's daily life. It has also influence our culture. It has
impacted how we write and tell stories. Not just that but also what makes a hero and how heroic
movies are made. It has impacted how our perspective, literature, language, and many more stuff,
and aspects that till now people still put into practice. The aspects of Greek culture that are similar
to today's society is how society sees heros as evidence by culture. Culture is the perspective and
belief of the society. "Campbell discovered many common patterns running through hero myths and
stories from around the world ( Hamilton,1867– 1963 ,p. 1). This citation is related to the topic

hero's journey is almost exactly the same way how Greek culture would write its myths. This relates

diversity of an area. In each of the different areas, the P–Values were above 0.05 meaning that there
was no significant correlation between woody litter mass and soil invertebrate diversity. There were
36 total invertebrates found between all the areas we measured with 8 different species. We also

The Spider : A Short Story
YEE The sidewalk was cracked and breaking. I watched as the bus went around the corner, and I
was alone. I knew that I was being watched. The spider was always watching. Everywhere I went I
knew that the spider was there. Sometimes I saw it, sometimes I didn't. It was a big tarantula like
thing with hairy legs, and big sharp pincers. I had no idea what it wanted, but I knew I didn't want to
find out. I had asked my mom once if she had ever seen the spider too, and her reply was, "It's just
your imagination, now go eat dinner." That was the last I talked to anyone about it. I kept it to
myself, pretending that it wasn't there, but I knew it was. Watching me, wanting to get to me. The
other spiders seemed scared of this one, they never seemed to be around when he was. Sometimes I
would strain my eyes trying to see just one spider that wasn't the tarantula, but I never could. I was
doing just that today, looking into the cracks for any normal spider, when I saw it. The tarantula was
sitting in one of the cracks, just waiting. If I would have taken one more step it could have touched
my foot. If it did that I would have a heart attack. I went across the street to avoid going towards it,
but there it was again sitting by a tree. I turned around to go the long way home when there it was
again on someone's fence. It was everywhere. I guess it was finally time to figure out what this thing
wanted.
I yelled at it, "What do you want?!" It just sat there and looked at me. Then a spider came out from
behind the fence and set what looked like a fly down on the fence. The tarantula ate it immediately,
and I understood. The other spider weren't afraid of it, they were obeying it, it was their queen. That
scared me even more, because every empire has an army to go with it, and their spider who is
haunting me controls one such army. I turned and just ran. I ran as fast as I could, and when I saw it
I went around it. I ran as fast as I could until I could see my house, that's when it caught up to my. It
fell out of a tree right in front of me and I stopped and screamed. It was an earsplitting scream. I
turned and went to run, when there was another. They were surrounding me. There was nowhere to
go. I saw a stick on the ground

Black Widow Spiders Essay
Adult black widow spiders have a shiny, black, rounded, circular abdomen and
are about 1/3 inch long (about 1–1/2 inches when their legs are spread).
Adult spiders have two reddish or yellowish triangles on their bottom which
looks like an hourglass marking, and their body color is dark colored usually
black or sometimes dark brown. They are usually recognized because of their
red or red–orange hourglass design on the bottom of their abdomen. This
pattern is changeable and may look like two separated spots. In some spiders
there is no pattern on the abdomen. The immature stages of both sexes of the
widow spiders have red or red–orange or yellow spots and strips on the top
of their abdomen. Females are colored gray ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Death usually results
from respiratory paralysis. People with a history of high blood pressure are
at the greatest risk. But immediate medical treatment can reduce the danger
from widow bites and has reduced fatalities to very low rates in recent
years. However, this spider is considered the most venomous spider in North
America.
If you are bitten stay calm, get the spider, if you can for positive
identification and because of the possible severity of black widow bites you
should get immediate medical attention is important. If you apply an
antiseptic such as iodine or hydrogen peroxide prevents infection.
Physicians can inject calcium gluconate to help the effects of the toxin so
it is less harmful. This helps support levels of calcium salts that are low
by the effects of a bite. You can also get black widow antiserum. Since the
toxin moves quickly through the body trying to suck out the poison doesn't
work. People younger than 16 and older than 60, especially those with a
heart condition might have to stay at a hospital.
The black widow spider is shy and usually not aggressive and bites can be
rare even when there are lots of them. The adult female spiders usually stay
in their webs unless they have to because of the temperature or if their web
gets destroyed. They do not search for food and they eat the insects they
get in their webs and are eaten when they get to them. Human bites

Yes, but what I failed to mention was that the scorpion too was a creature of habit. The scorpion

Brown Recluse Research Paper
While almost all spiders have venom and possess the ability to bite, most arachnids found in New
Jersey pose little to no risk to humans. With that said, a few potentially dangerous species do reside
in Jersey, and knowing the habit and appearance of these venomous spiders can help you avoid
them.
Brown Recluse Spider
An adult brown recluse (Loxosceles reclusa) measures between 6 and 11 millimeters with a dark
brown to dull yellow coloring. The most distinctive characteristic is the violin or fiddle–shape mark
located on the cephalothorax. Unlike other spiders who have 8 eyes, the brown recluse only has six.
However, counting the eyes of a spider can be a bit difficult without a magnifying glass or
microscope. The brown recluse dwells in barns, homes, basements, storage boxes, woodpiles,
behind furniture and various other dark, sheltered areas. The brown recluse hunts for its food and
doesn't use its web for catching prey.
A bite from the brown recluse may go undetected until symptoms start to appear several hours later.
In serious cases, tissue damage, necrosis or open wounds that won't heat can occur from the bite of
this spider. The bite also poses a fatal risk to children, the elderly and individuals suffering from a

An Essay : An Arachnid With A Superpower Essay
An Arachnid With A Superpower
Researcher Christopher Buddle of McGill University in Canada, and his colleagues almost
accidentally came across the Northern Pseudoscorpion "Wyochernes asiaticus" while working on a
research project. Northern pseudoscorpions reside in rocky areas along creeks and rivers such as
Sheep Creek in the Yukon, where Buddle and his team collected the specimen. These areas are not
only extremely cold, but they flood each spring, for two to seven days at a time. Knowing that only
about four specimens had been collected previously, Buddle was determined to know how these tiny
arachnids could survive such brutal temperatures and external conditions. He then focused the next
couple of years to researching the pseudoscorpion.
Buddle and several other research scientists collected two–hundred specimens from their natural
habitat to study their tolerance to cold and immersion in water. They found that like many other
arachnids, the northern pseudoscorpion avoided freezing to death by lowering its body temperature.
The northern pseudoscorpion had the ability to protect itself from temperatures as low as –7 degrees
celsius. However, the real surprise came when they found that after an allotted time of seventeen
days submerged in water, the pseudoscorpion was still alive. This astounded them considering that
the typical flood time in their native habitat was seven days. The pseudoscorpions had a silvery
coating around their bodies, suggesting that they had

Comparing A Spider Holds A Silver Ball, And Design By...
Approximately 30.5% of people in the United States are arachnophobic (7 Arachnophobia
Statistics). With that, most people dislike spiders from a young age for their eerie, hairy, and
nightmarish bodies. Although, there is another side, spiders also create webs to catch their prey, but
these death contraptions are very fragile and it takes a very meticulous and careful spider to
correctly design one. These different beliefs are each shown in the two poems "A Spider Holds a
Silver Ball" by Emily Dickinson, and "Design" by Robert Frost. Dickinson shows a majestic web,
made by an equally majestic spider, whereas Frost portrays an evil spider, using his web only to kill
and consume his prey. The use of imagery and tone in"A Spider Holds a Silver Ball" by Emily
Dickinson, and "Design" by Robert Frost clearly shows the contrasting portrayal of spiders by each
spider.
The imagery used by Frost and Dickinson is so different that it shows the readers a different
characterization of spiders from each poem. Dickinson paints an image of a danseur spider "dancing
softly" (li. 3), and "plié[–ing] from Nought to Nought" (li. 5), she depicts a glorious spider that
makes his webs very gracefully. The idea that the spider is a danseur and gracefully constructs his
web has the reader, instead of picturing a hairy, fat, and ugly spider, one that looks like a real
human, a dancer. With the three words "Continents of Light" (li. 10), Dickinson is taking readers

The Pandinus Imperator a.k.a. Emperor Scorpion
The Pandinus imperator, also known as the Emperor Scorpion or the Imperial Scorpion, is native to
the hot, humid forests and savannas of Nigeria, Togo, Sierra Leone, Ghana, and the Congo Region.
The Emperor Scorpion is the largest, but not the longest of all the scorpions8. They are also not as
vicious as they look, they would rather flee than fight. However, if they are cornered they will turn
aggressive and go to defensive position. Their venom is categorized as mild and is only as harmful
as a bee sting, unless you are allergic. Their large pedipalps (pinchers) are strong enough to draw
blood from a human. In this paper the topic that will be discussed is how human action can improve
the terrestrial environment that is home to the Emperor Scorpion. Humans need to stop keeping
them as pets, slow down deforestation, and plant more tress. The Emperor Scorpion belongs to the
phylum Arthropoda, the name Arthropoda means jointed feet. An arthropod is an organism that has
a hard exoskeleton made out of a hard substance called chitin. Its body is segmented and each part
of its body has its own pair of legs, which are jointed, and it is also an invertebrate10. An
invertebrate is an organism that lacks a vertebral column which is also called a backbone11. Every

Daddy Long Legs Vs Spider Research Paper
Spiders V.S. Daddy Long Legs
For many years people have said that Daddy Long Legs are the most poisonous spiders in the world
but their fangs are not long enough to puncture a human's skin. I find them both equally creepy, but
have decided to find out the true differences between these hair–raising, eight legged creatures.
Spiders and Daddy long legs are both arthropods and belong to the arachnid animal class. Although
they may look a lot alike, Daddy Long Legs are not spiders and in fact have several differences from
the spider.
The first difference that can help with identification between these two arachnids are their body
shape. Spiders have two noticeable body segments; they are the rounded head section and the
abdomen. Meanwhile, looking at the Daddy Long Leg, it looks as if there is only one segment. It
appears to have one oval–shaped body segment, but this is because the mid–section is much wider
and more difficult to see. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Long Leg has only one pair of eyes, which are located on the top of their heads, with a sideways

Eight Legged Creepy Flies Research Paper
The Origin of Eight–Legged Creepy Crawlies
The tragic tale of how spiders came into existence began with a young girl named Arachne; naive,
prideful and a bit too talented. Arachne challenged Athena, the goddess of weaving. In some
versions of the myth Arachne directly declared her superiority to the goddess and challenged
Athena, and in other versions, her sheer skill challenged the goddess. A contest followed, and
although Arachne's weaving was better than Athena's, it was disrespectful and showed a disgraceful
vision of the gods. Weaving the gods in a bad light was a tragic mistake for Arachne, and she paid
for the transgression with her human life. Athena in a rage decided to allow Arachne to weave
forever and turned her into a spider, or, scientifically known as an arachnid (Hamilton 302–303).
As the myth above explains, Arachne was the first spider, so the species took her name: Arachnid.
Contrary to common knowledge, spiders are not the only arachnids in existence, although they are
the most significant order in that class. Other animals which fall under the category of arachnids
include scorpions, mites, ticks, and harvestmen. Today aspects of the myth live on in the existence
of arachnids and the usage of that term, most commonly used when referring to spiders. ... Show

Robotics: The Difference Between Fear And Phobias
Fear and Phobia
By:Tarik Alleyne
Definition
Fear is an unpleasant emotion caused by the belief that someone or something dangerous, likely to
cause pain, or a threat.
Phobia is an extreme or irrational fear of or aversion to something.
Entomophobia, better known as insectophobia, is a specific phobia characterized by an excessive or
unrealistic fear of one or more classes of insects. This is a very common phobia.
Multiple Types of Entomophobia
Since there are multiple types of insect, there are multiple types of entomophobia that connect with
some of those insects.
There is apiphobia which is a fear of bees and myrmecophobia which is a fear of ants.
Arachnophobia
Many people tend to believe that spiders are insects, but they aren't. Spiders are arachnid.

The autonomic nervous system has two components, the sympathetic nervous system and the
parasympathetic nervous system. The sympathetic nervous system functions like a gas pedal in a

respond to perceived dangers.
The Difference between Fear and Phobia
Many people believe that Fear and Phobia are the same thing, but there is actually a distinct
difference.
Fear is an emotional response to a real or perceived threat, while Phobia is similar to fear the one
key difference is the anxiety they experience is so strong that it interferes with their quality of life
and/or their ability to function.
Making a distinction between a fear and a phobia is useful because they are qualitatively very
different problems.
Facing your phobias
Phobias come in many shapes and sizes. They affect the way we think and how we live our lives.

gathering killing material, and murdering it. First, to kill a spider you must assess the situation
without scaring the arachnid away. Once you identify that the spider is moving at the speed of a

even dangerous or not is an essential component to this process. In the meantime, research common
types of deadly spiders in your city. Is it a harmless arachnid or is it perhaps a brown recluse or

Blood feeding occurs once in each stage.
The diagram to the right shows the life cycle of a tick.
Larvae have six legs, climb the vegetation and wait for a passing host, usually a mouse. There they
feed for 2–3 days and they increase their weight 10–20 times. Thy then drop off into the vegetation
and continue to grow.
After several months, the lava molts to an 8–legged nymph of around 2mm.
A few months later the nymph molts again into the final stage of tick development; the adult. The
adult female can only feed successfully on larger animals such as dogs, deer sheep and cows. When
it feeds it can grow to 150 times its original weight. The immature stages of the tick can paratize
almost any warm blooded animal.

Allegory In Starship Troopers
The alien in Starship Troopers is satirically literal, and the uniformity Oates noted emphasised by a
FedNet clip showing gleeful children stomping on common cockroaches. These bugs bear no
resemblance or connection to the Arachnids, other than they are both insect species, yet are equally
demonised as part of the war effort. This can be read as an allegory, as Frank has observed, for the
tendency in official, news and fictional discourses to represent terrorists and the terror threat, as
alien and radically other. (Frank, 2011, p. 154–158) Both Jackson and Ott have connected such
definitional issues to violence and power, as Ott states, "Language homogenizes them, reinforcing

(Oates, 20 p. 135) Likewise, Nacos criticised the media for failing to scrutinise governments or
present non–violent options for public debate instead favouring official discourse by focusing on
counterterrorism and military action. She notes, "All Americans would have benefited from
comprehensive, balanced, probing reporting and editorializing" allowing them "to make well–
informed decisions.... such as the question of whether to torture known and suspected terrorists"
(Nacos, 2007, p172) In a subsequent study, Nacos also observed the mass media were reluctant to
label the abuse and degradation at Abu Ghraib as torture, once there was evidence of such, instead
choosing other terms such as "alleged abuse" and "mistreatment." (Nacos, 2011, pp. 289–290)
Jamail furthered this observation, stating, "The media try hard to place the spotlight on a minor
issue thereby attempting to obfuscate the larger violation. This was clearly visible in the case of the
Abu Ghraib reports." (Jamail, 2012, p. 301) Oates attributes this failure to the patriotic constraint
experienced by the media post 9/11 which "limited acceptable debate and challenge". (Oates, 2008,
p.40) However, in the aftermath of Abu Ghraib, Nacos subsequently found that media practices had
altered, exemplified by ample coverage and scrutiny being provided when the Patriot Act was due to

Sarcoptic Mange Research Paper
Sarcoptic mange is a common parasitic disease of the skin among mammalian species, including
dogs. In dogs, this non–seasonal and highly contagious infection is caused by infestation with the
mite Sarcoptes scabiei var. canis (Espinosa et al. 2017). These adult mites have four pairs of short
legs, grow in a circular shape 0.2–0.6 mm long, and covered with small triangular spines (Arlian &
Vyszenski–Moher 1988). The ovigerous females can grow up to twice as large as males, and they
burrow tunnels in the host's stratum corneum to lay eggs. The mite has a direct life cycle that lasts
from 10–13 days (Arlian & Vyszenski–Moher 1988).
Demodectic mange is another persistent inflammatory parasitic skin disease among dogs. Two
subtypes of demodectic mange, squamous and pustular (Healey & Gaafar 1977), are differentiated
according to the type of skin lesion seen. The parasites responsible, Demodex canis mites, are
commonly found in small numbers in the skin of healthy dogs. They are suspected to be transmitted
from carrier mothers to puppies shortly after birth (Unsworth 1946), but the otherwise the disease

The Effect Of Arthropods On Our Earth

  • 1. The Effect Of Arthropods On Our Earth Introduction Arthropods are fundamental animals to life on earth. For example, many of these arthropods help plants pollinate. Others can carry diseases from host to host, but their success story is due to how long they have been present on earth. This has led the high diversity within the phylum Arthropoda, with more than ten million different species, making up more than eighty percent of the organisms in kingdom Animalia. This only includes classified species; it is believed millions of other species exists, but have not been discovered. These arthropods can be found in various places; for example most are terrestrial and others are aquatic (Hickman and Roberts, 1994) . Evolution has helped them to conquer the skies as well. A reason as to why it is believed unclassified species exist is because they may live in remote areas, such as deep in a tropical rainforests. The arthropods share many characteristics facilitating their mass divergence. First of all they are part of kingdom Animalia; characteristics that make an arthropod an animal consist of being multicellular organism lacking cell walls. Their bodies consist of true tissue for sensory and movement, which aids in activities such as finding food and finding a mate. Arthropods' bodies have three germ layers, or triploblastic. These germ layers consist of an endoderm, mesoderm, and an ectoderm. The endoderm develops into the digestive organs; the ectoderm develops into muscular tissue, and the ectoderm into the ... • 2. Brown Recluse Spider Research Paper Did you know that a spider's bite actually doesn't kill you? The bite causes side effects that can lead up to death if untreated. The brown recluse spider prefers to live and hide in dark corners, and even places inside your own home, they live under furniture, boxes, and books. The brown recluse's behavior tends to be shy rather than aggressive. The brown recluse spider only bite when they feel disturbed or when they are touched. More common attacks by the brown recluse are from clothing. For example when you put shoes on the brown recluse may be inside your shoe where they decide to live and they will bite to defend themselves before they are crushed to death. The brown recluse spider's web consists of a loose and irregular yet extremely sticky ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The camel spider excludes itself from sunlight during the daytime, it is said that when the camel spider is resting and it is disturbed it will jump two feet high behind your shadow. The camel spider can be found mainly in the middle eastern deserts. This being the reason it is called "desert spider" other names are "wind spider" or "wind scorpion". Because of the sound the camel spider makes when running. And "sun scorpion" despite the fact that they belong to the species of arachnids they actually are not even spiders but solifugids cin catin. • 3. Spidery In Brazil A spider from Brazil takes more than an agonizing bite that sends most casualties to the doctor's clinic. Its venom invigorates an erection that lasts for an hour and sometimes, longer. Lately, researchers have finally discovered the compound that causes male's private organ to get super erected. In Brazil, staff from an emergency section can quickly recognize the people that are bitten by this Brazilian spidery. Patients not only undergo an excruciating torment and an elevated blood pressure, an uncomfortable erection will always be present to these victims as well. "The erection is a reaction that everyone who gets stung by this arachnid will encounter alongside the torment and distress," as stated by researcher team colleague Romulo ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... "They have to be fully relaxed so the blood will freely flow inside and that is how you get an erection, because of the fact that the blood gets flown and trapped into the reproductive organ." However, an erection does not last for a very very long time. The potency destroyer, a substance called PDE–5 separates the cGMP and thus changes the erect reproductive organ into its ordinary flacid state. The most prominent impotency medications are Viagra, Cialis and Levtra–works by hindering this potency destroyer substance. The arachnid's substance works in a different way, influencing a prior stride in the erection procedure. Some way or another, the toxins elevates the number of nitric oxide, which kind of sets the movement of an erection. The researchers propose that a mixture of a manufactured variant of the spider's venom with a medication like Viagra would bring about an amplified impact. "So the blend of the two medications could be much more proficient in patients that do not react well to Viagra," Leite ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Overview Of Jon Genty: The Engines Of Our Ingenuity The Engines of our Ingenuity: No. 1069: A Spider's Web by Jon Genty The Engines of our Ingenuity is brought to you by the Friends of KUHF Today, we're giving arachnids a run for their money. The University of Houston's college of engineering presents this series about the machines that make our civilization run, and the people whose ingenuity created them. Next time you brush away a cobweb, consider what you're brushing. The diameter of a strand is around 1/10,000 of an inch. Human hair has 30 times the diameter and a thousand times the cross–sectional area. It's the difference between thread and rope. However, this "thread" is stronger than steel and can stretch to 140 percent of its length. At the same time, it's inelastic, absorbing ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... And with this latest development we introduce the likely applications in "microfabrication of complex structures, reversible micro–motors or self–tensioned stretchable systems" (Elettro, 2016). Through these advances, the researchers demonstrate the potential of this technology to alter nearly every facet of our everyday lives. • 5. Arthropods Lab Report Universal Statement: There 5 classes of Arthropods. There are the Myriapods, Trilobites, Chelicerates, Crustaceans, and Insects. The Myriapods are many footed and have one to two pairs of appendages per body segment. They are the centipedes and millipedes. Trilobites are extinct and we only have their fossils. Chelicerates are the Arachnids and anything with eight legs. Crustaceans are the crabs and anything with ten or more legs. The insects are the ones with 3 pairs of legs and body regions. They all have a segmented body plan, exoskeleton composed of chitin, bilateral symmetry, and paired jointed appendages. In our lab we were trying to identify and label the internal and external anatomy of a grasshopper from the class insecta. 1 Re–do ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 6. Pentecopterus Research Paper Correction: The six–foot–long predatory scorpion is not currently terrorizing Iowa. But it used to, about 467 million years ago, back when Iowa was an ocean. While excavating a meteorite crater in northeastern Iowa's Winneshiek Shale, paleontologists discovered the fossil of an enormous and bizarre ancient scorpion species that lived in the ocean. It is now believed to be Planet Earth's earliest large predator. The findings were published in the journal BMC Evolutionary Biology on August 31st, 2015. "Tick...I Am Your Father" – Darth Pentecopterus Researchers named the new–old species Pentecopterus decorahensis after it's many–legged body's resemblance to an ancient Greek war ship, the pentecopter. ("Decorahensis" presumably means something ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Similarly to the Pentecopterus, it terrorized shallow waters, preying on fish, crustaceans, and other eurypterids. But it had two key differences: one, the Jaekelopterus lived in fresh water, invalidating the common moniker "sea scorpion" for all eurypterids. (Don't make that mistake again!) Two, more importantly, the Jaekelopterus is quite young, a mere 390 million years old. The earlier glory days of the Pentercopterus, about 467 million years ago, extends previous estimates of how long eurypterids ruled Earth's waters. What Could Have Vanquished Such Glorious Creatures? Why, none other than the Permian–Triassic extinction event 252 million years ago, the planet's most severe extinction. The dinosaurs were just the highest–profile casualty of this event (possibly a meteor impact, possibly a volcanic event, theories abound), which wiped out 70% of all terrestrial species and 96% of all marine species. (Read those numbers again.) It took at least 10 million years for life to recover to pre–event levels. • 7. Personal Narrative-Arachnid Analysis I enjoy and am talented at paperfolding. It is hard for me to say whether hundreds of hours of origami or hands and a brain well built for it allowed me to develop abilities such as folding blindfolded, memorizing complex designs, and visualizing detailed folding sequences. Origami artists defy the constraint of only being able to fold paper in the most spectacular way possible. Insects are a coveted form that have lots of long, spindly appendages –– a perfect foil to the "no cuts" constraint. When I was younger, my dream was to design origami bugs. When I was nine, I invented a simple arachnid. I created dozens of other arthropods in middle school. I began to use computer–assisted and mathematical techniques to refine my many–appendaged designs. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 8. Why Are Myths Still Relevant To Today Myths still endure today, because it sets a moral cod, explains natural phenomenon, and entertains the reader. One reason mythology sill endures is because it sets a moral code for future people to follow. For example in the story Achene, the wise goddess Athena turns Arachne into a arachnid, because Arachne was being very cocky, arrogant, and rude, cause Athena to kick Arachne off her "high horse". Athena tells Arachne to "live on wicked girl, live on and spin you and your decedents" (Coolidge 51). A second reason mythology is still relevant is because is explains natural phenomenon. However, you may find an improvement in your health if you limit exposure to them. Sadly, you cannot get rid of bed mites completely. This is impossible, they thrive in so many places around the home. Your towels, carpets, furniture, if you have young children they live in their stuffed animals, clothing and of course the bed. This is the one place I struggle with, knowing they are in my bed at night. I can't stand to think about them crawling around while I am trying to get a good nights sleep. I am a neat freak, and if you are anything like me, and always make a point of making the bed in the mornings. Welcome to part of the problem. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Bed mites love this, and you sleep among their droppings. Makes me shudder.

  • 11. The Ramist Logic of Edward Taylor's Upon a Spider... The Ramist Logic of Edward Taylor's Upon a Spider Catching a Fly Like other Puritanical writers of his generation, Edward Taylor looked to nature and utilized it as an example of a belief system that he had already deemed factual. The use Ramist logic here may seem irrational to many. The very essence of logic commands that we must first look toward nature and then draw conclusions from it. In his work, "Upon a Spider Catching a Fly", Taylor applies his doctrine in advance by using the interaction between an arachnid and a certain contrasting insect as an example of the Calvinist theory of predestination; the belief that one's fate cannot be influenced by one's works or earthly deeds. It is also part of his belief system, however, that ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The reader is then introduced to the wasp who, by some folly, has become entangled in the spider's treacherous web. Instead of immediately pouncing on the trapped wasp, the spider seems instinctively aware that the Wasp has the ability to overpower him and therefore maintains a safe distance. "Lest he should fling/ His sting./ But as afraid, remote/ Didst stand hereat." Instead, the spider is afraid that if provoked, the wasp would damage his web. "Lest he should pet,/ And in a froppish, waspish heat/ Should greatly fret Thy net." In a description of the type of retaliation that would ensue if the wasp is provoked, Taylor opts to use the word "waspish", creating an adjective from the very noun that he is using it to describe. Through such a choice of grammar, Taylor is indicating that being a wasp is synonymous with being successfully defensive. In utter juxtaposition to the "pettish wasp" is "the silly fly, Caught by his leg". Although in a similar situation to the wasp, the fly is destined for doom. Unlike its foil, it is ill–equipped to defend itself against the evil spider. The spider, as if innately aware of the fly's weakness, immediately devours the fly. "Thou by the throat took hastily And 'hind the head Bite dead." The fly never has a chance of liberation once within the deadly grasp of the spider's web. It is as if it has been created as defenseless by nature just as the wasp has been created with the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 12. Drumming Wolf Spider The Wolf spider belongs to the Lycosidae family. They are a part of the Arthropod phylum as they are characterized by having an exoskeleton, coelom, an open circulatory system and body segments with jointed appendages. Arthropods evolved by substituting the coelom for a protective exoskeleton. It was not entirely lost, but still remains in some parts of the reproductive and excretory systems. (Ruppert et al. 2004) Lycosidae are in the Araneae order as they are arthropods with four pairs of legs with chelicerae that contains venomous glands. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The Lycosidae uses its chelicerae to hold its prey before using its venomous fangs into paralysing it. (Nicholas, 2011) Similarly, snakes inject venom quickly into its prey and waits for it to immobilise before digesting it, this adaptation prevents preys from escaping and increases its chance of survival. The Wolf spider and Nursery web spider (Pisauridae) are closely related and both exhibit similar but different characteristics which highlights the divergences of the species. They both have eight eyes which puts them in the superfamily Lycosoidea, the Pisauridae has similar sized eyes whilst the wolf spider has two big eyes at the front and six smaller ones. Their maternal care is also alike; the wolf spider carries its egg sac from its spinnerets for 4–6 weeks whilst Pisauridae carries its egg sacs in their chelicerae for 2–3 weeks before building a protective tent to safe guard them in. (Nicholas, 2011). Since Wolf Spiders are poor dispersers (Marshall et al, 2000), they are likely to be affected by human activity such as habitat destruction from land clearing, and pesticides used on crops and grasses. This is likely to affect the Wolf Spider as habitat destruction would not only remove its home, but also cause the removal of prey ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Grice, an essayist, is enchanted by the ways of the arachnid and hunts the creatures. His vast knowledge on the spiders prevails in an informative tone, but the writing is slightly eerie, adding depth to the unnerving characterization. Gordon Grice depicts the black widow as one of the deadliest arachnids and through his use of literary devices and distinct modes of writing he intertwines the methods of the widow with the evil ways of our world. Grice implements the modes of description and narration through the identity of the black widow spider to illustrate his deeper meaning. The author's fascination of the spider is fostered through detailed explication of the customs of the widow. In paragraph three, Grice informs that once the prey is "seriously ... The author directly compares the disgust of the spider's remnants, after killing it, to the revulsion one experiences after murdering a human. The ugly webs of the black widow spider correlates to the ugly messes of evil throughout an individual's life. The widow's web is painted by "messy–looking tangles in the corners and bends of things and under logs and debris"(2). Humans value order and cleanliness over disarray, which is equivalent to evil. Grice portrays this through the black widow's webs and their state of being unkempt. • 19. The Spider : A Short Story YEE The sidewalk was cracked and breaking. I watched as the bus went around the corner, and I was alone. I knew that I was being watched. The spider was always watching. Everywhere I went I knew that the spider was there. Sometimes I saw it, sometimes I didn't. It was a big tarantula like thing with hairy legs, and big sharp pincers. I had no idea what it wanted, but I knew I didn't want to find out. I had asked my mom once if she had ever seen the spider too, and her reply was, "It's just your imagination, now go eat dinner." That was the last I talked to anyone about it. I kept it to myself, pretending that it wasn't there, but I knew it was. Watching me, wanting to get to me. The other spiders seemed scared of this one, they never seemed to be around when he was. Sometimes I would strain my eyes trying to see just one spider that wasn't the tarantula, but I never could. I was doing just that today, looking into the cracks for any normal spider, when I saw it. The tarantula was sitting in one of the cracks, just waiting. If I would have taken one more step it could have touched my foot. If it did that I would have a heart attack. I went across the street to avoid going towards it, but there it was again sitting by a tree. I turned around to go the long way home when there it was again on someone's fence. It was everywhere. I guess it was finally time to figure out what this thing wanted. I yelled at it, "What do you want?!" It just sat there and looked at me. Then a spider came out from behind the fence and set what looked like a fly down on the fence. The tarantula ate it immediately, and I understood. The other spider weren't afraid of it, they were obeying it, it was their queen. That scared me even more, because every empire has an army to go with it, and their spider who is haunting me controls one such army. I turned and just ran. I ran as fast as I could, and when I saw it I went around it. I ran as fast as I could until I could see my house, that's when it caught up to my. It fell out of a tree right in front of me and I stopped and screamed. It was an earsplitting scream. I turned and went to run, when there was another. They were surrounding me. With that said, a few potentially dangerous species do reside in Jersey, and knowing the habit and appearance of these venomous spiders can help you avoid them. Brown Recluse Spider An adult brown recluse (Loxosceles reclusa) measures between 6 and 11 millimeters with a dark brown to dull yellow coloring. The most distinctive characteristic is the violin or fiddle–shape mark located on the cephalothorax. Unlike other spiders who have 8 eyes, the brown recluse only has six. However, counting the eyes of a spider can be a bit difficult without a magnifying glass or microscope. The brown recluse dwells in barns, homes, basements, storage boxes, woodpiles, behind furniture and various other dark, sheltered areas. The brown recluse hunts for its food and doesn't use its web for catching prey. A bite from the brown recluse may go undetected until symptoms start to appear several hours later. An Essay : An Arachnid With A Superpower Essay An Arachnid With A Superpower Researcher Christopher Buddle of McGill University in Canada, and his colleagues almost accidentally came across the Northern Pseudoscorpion "Wyochernes asiaticus" while working on a research project. Northern pseudoscorpions reside in rocky areas along creeks and rivers such as Sheep Creek in the Yukon, where Buddle and his team collected the specimen. These areas are not only extremely cold, but they flood each spring, for two to seven days at a time. Knowing that only about four specimens had been collected previously, Buddle was determined to know how these tiny arachnids could survive such brutal temperatures and external conditions. He then focused the next couple of years to researching the pseudoscorpion. Buddle and several other research scientists collected two–hundred specimens from their natural habitat to study their tolerance to cold and immersion in water. They found that like many other arachnids, the northern pseudoscorpion avoided freezing to death by lowering its body temperature. The northern pseudoscorpion had the ability to protect itself from temperatures as low as –7 degrees celsius. However, the real surprise came when they found that after an allotted time of seventeen days submerged in water, the pseudoscorpion was still alive. This astounded them considering that the typical flood time in their native habitat was seven days. The pseudoscorpions had a silvery coating around their bodies, suggesting that they had ... • 29. Comparing A Spider Holds A Silver Ball, And Design By... Approximately 30.5% of people in the United States are arachnophobic (7 Arachnophobia Statistics). With that, most people dislike spiders from a young age for their eerie, hairy, and nightmarish bodies. Although, there is another side, spiders also create webs to catch their prey, but these death contraptions are very fragile and it takes a very meticulous and careful spider to correctly design one. These different beliefs are each shown in the two poems "A Spider Holds a Silver Ball" by Emily Dickinson, and "Design" by Robert Frost. Dickinson shows a majestic web, made by an equally majestic spider, whereas Frost portrays an evil spider, using his web only to kill and consume his prey. The use of imagery and tone in"A Spider Holds a Silver Ball" by Emily Dickinson, and "Design" by Robert Frost clearly shows the contrasting portrayal of spiders by each spider. The imagery used by Frost and Dickinson is so different that it shows the readers a different characterization of spiders from each poem. Dickinson paints an image of a danseur spider "dancing softly" (li. 3), and "plié[–ing] from Nought to Nought" (li. 5), she depicts a glorious spider that makes his webs very gracefully. The idea that the spider is a danseur and gracefully constructs his web has the reader, instead of picturing a hairy, fat, and ugly spider, one that looks like a real human, a dancer. However, if they are cornered they will turn aggressive and go to defensive position. Their venom is categorized as mild and is only as harmful as a bee sting, unless you are allergic. Their large pedipalps (pinchers) are strong enough to draw blood from a human. • 34. Eight Legged Creepy Flies Research Paper The Origin of Eight–Legged Creepy Crawlies The tragic tale of how spiders came into existence began with a young girl named Arachne; naive, prideful and a bit too talented. Arachne challenged Athena, the goddess of weaving. In some versions of the myth Arachne directly declared her superiority to the goddess and challenged Athena, and in other versions, her sheer skill challenged the goddess. A contest followed, and although Arachne's weaving was better than Athena's, it was disrespectful and showed a disgraceful vision of the gods. Weaving the gods in a bad light was a tragic mistake for Arachne, and she paid for the transgression with her human life. Athena in a rage decided to allow Arachne to weave forever and turned her into a spider, or, scientifically known as an arachnid (Hamilton 302–303). As the myth above explains, Arachne was the first spider, so the species took her name: Arachnid. Contrary to common knowledge, spiders are not the only arachnids in existence, although they are the most significant order in that class. The sympathetic nervous system functions like a gas pedal in a car. It triggers the fight or flight response providing the body with a burst of energy so that it can respond to perceived dangers. The Difference between Fear and Phobia Many people believe that Fear and Phobia are the same thing, but there is actually a distinct difference. Fear is an emotional response to a real or perceived threat, while Phobia is similar to fear the one key difference is the anxiety they experience is so strong that it interferes with their quality of life and/or their ability to function. Making a distinction between a fear and a phobia is useful because they are qualitatively very different problems. Facing your phobias Phobias come in many shapes and sizes. They affect the way we think and how we live our lives. They say the best way to face your fear is to talk to someone about it, but in my opinion the best way to face your fear is ... • 36. Spider Persuasive Speech What's an arachnid, has eight legs, and shoot venom with its fangs? Spiders. Believe it or not spiders are on every continent of this world and are practically inescapable creatures. There are more than forty thousand different types of spiders roaming on this earth. To make matters worse, you find yourself home alone heading straight for your bed and their it is: a creepy, crawly beast with a leg span of 13 inches. You find yourself in a horrific panic and don't know how to eliminate it. Here's how you do it in three simple steps: Killing a spider involves accessing the situation, gathering killing material, and murdering it. First, to kill a spider you must assess the situation without scaring the arachnid away. Once you identify that the spider is moving at the speed of a greased ninja, you take a closer look at its limitations and surroundings. Identifying if the spider is even dangerous or not is an essential component to this process. In the meantime, research common types of deadly spiders in your city. Is it a harmless arachnid or is it perhaps a brown recluse or maybe a black widow? Although most spiders are completely harmless, there is a chance it could be dangerous. If the arachnid turns out to be deadly, take a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Lure your prey by approaching it calmly with subtle movements. Once it is completely paralyzed, put on gloves and grab paper towels to pick it up. To prevent the spread of more arachnids forming immediately throw it away and take out the garbage. • 38. 2. Nymph 3. Adult female [IMAGE]The life cycle takes 3 to six years to complete, with each stage taking at least one year. Blood feeding occurs once in each stage. The diagram to the right shows the life cycle of a tick. Larvae have six legs, climb the vegetation and wait for a passing host, usually a mouse. There they feed for 2–3 days and they increase their weight 10–20 times. Thy then drop off into the vegetation and continue to grow. After several months, the lava molts to an 8–legged nymph of around 2mm. A few months later the nymph molts again into the final stage of tick development; the adult. The adult female can only feed successfully on larger animals such as dogs, deer sheep and cows. When it feeds it can grow to 150 times its original weight. The immature stages of the tick can paratize almost any warm blooded animal. [IMAGE]The picture to the left is of a male and female tick mating. Whilst mating, the female continues to feed, engorging herself so that she can produce well nourished eggs. The males feed every so often to stay alive. When the female is ready to lay her eggs, she drops of the host lays her eggs and dies. The acts of human beings are guided by controls through the nervous system. A human being's response to its environment is also through controlled guiding and thoughts (Pinel, 2013). The peripheral nervous system or PNS and central nervous system or CNS are important parts of our nervous systems within hollow tube holding the CNS and PNS of our nervous system (Pinel, 2013). • 41. Allegory In Starship Troopers The alien in Starship Troopers is satirically literal, and the uniformity Oates noted emphasised by a FedNet clip showing gleeful children stomping on common cockroaches. These bugs bear no resemblance or connection to the Arachnids, other than they are both insect species, yet are equally demonised as part of the war effort. This can be read as an allegory, as Frank has observed, for the tendency in official, news and fictional discourses to represent terrorists and the terror threat, as alien and radically other. (Frank, 2011, p. 154–158) Both Jackson and Ott have connected such definitional issues to violence and power, as Ott states, "Language homogenizes them, reinforcing the prevailing perception that they are all the same and can be ... (Oates, 20 p. 135) Likewise, Nacos criticised the media for failing to scrutinise governments or present non–violent options for public debate instead favouring official discourse by focusing on counterterrorism and military action. She notes, "All Americans would have benefited from comprehensive, balanced, probing reporting and editorializing" allowing them "to make well– informed decisions.... such as the question of whether to torture known and suspected terrorists" (Nacos, 2007, p172) In a subsequent study, Nacos also observed the mass media were reluctant to label the abuse and degradation at Abu Ghraib as torture, once there was evidence of such, instead choosing other terms such as "alleged abuse" and "mistreatment." (Nacos, 2011, pp. 289–290) Jamail furthered this observation, stating, "The media try hard to place the spotlight on a minor issue thereby attempting to obfuscate the larger violation. This was clearly visible in the case of the Abu Ghraib reports." (Jamail, 2012, p. 301) Oates attributes this failure to the patriotic constraint experienced by the media post 9/11 which "limited acceptable debate and challenge". (Oates, 2008, p.40) However, in the aftermath of Abu Ghraib, Nacos subsequently found that media practices had altered, exemplified by ample coverage and scrutiny being provided when the Patriot Act was due to be ... • 42. Sarcoptic Mange Research Paper Sarcoptic mange is a common parasitic disease of the skin among mammalian species, including dogs. In dogs, this non–seasonal and highly contagious infection is caused by infestation with the mite Sarcoptes scabiei var. canis (Espinosa et al. 2017). These adult mites have four pairs of short legs, grow in a circular shape 0.2–0.6 mm long, and covered with small triangular spines (Arlian & Vyszenski–Moher 1988). The ovigerous females can grow up to twice as large as males, and they burrow tunnels in the host's stratum corneum to lay eggs. The mite has a direct life cycle that lasts from 10–13 days (Arlian & Vyszenski–Moher 1988). Demodectic mange is another persistent inflammatory parasitic skin disease among dogs. Two subtypes of demodectic mange, squamous and pustular (Healey & Gaafar 1977), are differentiated according to the type of skin lesion seen. The parasites responsible, Demodex canis mites, are commonly found in small numbers in the skin of healthy dogs. They are suspected to be transmitted from carrier mothers to puppies shortly after birth (Unsworth 1946), but the otherwise the disease shows no other mode of transmission. When the various species of the Demodex mites increase in numbers exorbitantly, it becomes a skin ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... As the mites prefer to live on areas of the skin with less hair, common initial sites of infection are the ears, face, ventral trunk and limbs. In particular, commonly affected localised regions are the periocular skin, the pinnal margins, the points of the elbows and the points of the hocks (Curtis 2012). Small, itchy, red pustules often develop, which worsen into severe crusting on the skin when the dog scratches them. The skin soon becomes reddened and a variety of secondary infections can develop (Curtis 2012). If untreated, secondary bacterial and yeast infections of sarcoptic mange lesions may ... • 43. Goliath Bird Eating Spider Research Paper The goliath bird eating spider is the heaviest of all spiders in the word weighing almost half a pound! It is also arguably the largest spider competing with the giant huntsman spider. They both have a leg span of about 12 inches! That's the size a small pizza! Their bodies are dark brown covered by reddish hairs giving the spider a golden blond appearance. The coloration of this spider gives it its species name "blondi" which is the Latin word for blond, or golden. The goliath bird– eating spider is found in rainforests from southern Venezuela east to Guyana, Suriname, French Guiana and north–eastern Brazil. The Goliath bird–eating spider was named by explorers who first reported them to the western world, and witnessed one eating a humming bird. They do not spin orb webs. ... It relies almost completely on its hairs to alert it of prey or predators. When threated, the bird eater will first rub its hind legs together very quickly to make a loud hissing noise hoping to confuse and scare its predator. If that doesn't work they will raise up on their hind legs and bear their inch long fangs. If bitten the predator will experience extreme pain and swelling, but no permanent damage will be induced. If the predator still won't them alone, they flick off hairs on its abdomen with its legs. These microscopically barbed hairs (called setae) can be irritating to the skin and lungs.
