Using A Computer Generated Random Number Table
To prevent bias and confounding in treatment assignment, randomization was completed. 10 (5 men, 5
women) participants (see Table 1) were each evaluated in person at the Howard University Speech and
Hearing Clinic. Each of which provided written informed consent for participation. Through the use of
a computer generated random number table, each participant was assigned their method of treatment,
either via face to face or telepractice at another local university speech and hearing clinic. Each
participant was 18 years or older and had been previously diagnosed with Primary Muscle Tension
Dysphonia (PMTD) by an otolaryngologist. Participants who presented with head and neck cancer,
organic lesions, spasmodic dysphonia or other neurological disorders, oropharyngeal dysphagia,
respiratory disorders including asthma, or mild MTD were excluded from the study. Also, excluded,
were any participants who previously utilized pharmacological treatment or received other voice

Woodchucks by Maxine Kumin Essay
Woodchucks by Maxine Kumin
Maxine Kumin?s, Woodchucks provides an interesting and creative perspective into the mind state of
those influenced by nazi warfare. What begins as a seemingly humorous cat and mouse hunt,
reminiscent of such movie classics as Caddyshack, soon develops into an insatiable lust for blood.
Kumin?s descriptive language provides the reader with the insight necessary to understand to the
speaker?s psychology as they are driven beyond the boundaries of pacifism.
The poem does indeed have a rhyme scheme, yet doesn?t conform to conventional forms of rhyme
such as A, B, A, B, etc. Rather, each stanza seems to follow the order of A, B, C, A, C, B, which may
not be apparent to the reader at first, but doesn?t ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
?They brought down the marigolds as a matter of course and then took over the vegetable patch
nipping the broccoli shoots, beheading the carrots.? This is especially evident in the reference to the
carrots being ?beheaded? which provides an appropriate transition into the next stanza.
The third stanza is the inevitable ?fall from grace? as our speaker has finally ?taken off the gloves?
and resorts to the vengeance of cold steel. The speaker utters one last phrase of motivation as he/she
eerily takes pleasure in holding the tool of his nemesis? destruction. ?The food from our mouths, I
said, righteously thrilling to the feel of the .22, the bullets? neat noses.? The killer now takes a
moment to lament on his/her course of action, acknowledging that her pacifism is a thing of the past;
that he/she was once comparable to Darwin and his pension for non violence. However, this does little
to dissuade he/she from swiftly taking the life of the pests. ?I, a lapsed pacifist fallen from grace
puffed with Darwinian pieties for killing, now drew a bead on the little woodchuck?s face. He died
down in the everbearing roses.? This stanza marked the turning point of the narrative as our speaker
has been pushed beyond their boundaries into an unfamiliar realm of pleasure. A side of them has been
exposed that has remained dormant for what appears to be the duration of their life. It is now a
newfound sensation that has thrilled them beyond

Cars are everywhere these days and most people wouldn t be able to live their daily lives without one.
Well, unfortunately nothing lasts forever, so these cars must be worked on and repaired. Do you ever
wonder why it takes so long to get your car fixed at a dealership? It takes a lot of skill to properly
diagnose and perform repairs on a vehicle, so it can take some time to get it back into your driveway.
Therefore, automotive technicians need to be extensively trained to make these kinds of diagnostics

Similarities Between Mill And Nietzsche
Introduction
In today s paper, I will be discussing Mill and Nietzsche. These two have differing opinions on what
the biggest threat to society are: Mill argues that Freedom of Speech is essential to finding the truth
(Mill, 2006, p. P12) so even controversial opinions should be listened to. He fears that the tyranny of
the majority could mean the Truth could be lost because alternative opinions are not listened to. The
other threat to society to Mill is that women have fewer rights then men such as voting he believes
women should be allowed to have the same opportunities (John Stuart Mill; Alan Ryan, 2006). In
contrast, Nietzsche believes the biggest threat to society is the assumption that morality is natural.
Morality is dangerous because ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Nietzsche s argument about morality is, largely, about rejecting Christianity (Frederick Nietzsche;
Douglas Smith, 2008, p. P203). His statements about morality can be argued is a tool to critique
organised religion in general. In contrast, Mill s goal is to make society stronger through learning the
Truth (Mill, 2006, p. P12) and allowing equality (John Stuart Mill; Alan Ryan, 2006). The two s goals
are different hence their conclusions are quite different.
Mill s opinion on biggest threat to society
Firstly, like I stated in the introduction, Mill believes that the biggest threat to society is that Freedom
of Speech being stifled and women not having the same rights and opportunities as men. This is a
threat to society for several reasons. Mill pointed out that the opinion which it is attempted to suppress
by authority may possibly be true (Frederick Nietzsche; Douglas Smith, 2008, p. P386) which
indicates that an unpopular opinion could be true ignoring this opinion would mean the public would
be pursuing something which is incorrect this would clearly damage society. Mill also stated that
though the silenced opinion be an error, it may, and very commonly does, contain a portion of truth;
and since the general or prevailing opinion on any subject is rarely or never the whole truth, it is

Dead Man s Pockets
Stephen Covey, an educator, author, and businessman, once said most of us spend too much time on
what is urgent and not enough time on what is important . A lot of people are so focused on work that
has to be done, even though it s not what they should be prioritizing, for instance, family and friends.
They are not appreciating living in the moment and instead are rushing around, not making time for
the things they should be. If people are determined to get work done, they will soon take actions they
wish hadn t occurred. In the short story, Contents of the Dead Man s Pockets , the main character,
Tom, faces a similar problem in where ambition to do work is overtaking him and he can t see what is
important in his life. In the short story, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
After thinking about it, he settles on trying to punch through the glass. It is his last hope, he tries
calling for help, dropping, and burning the few things in his pockets to no avail. Tom knows he is
stalling as he tries to gather his courage and believes to live even a few seconds longer...even out here
on this ledge in the night, was infinitely better than to die a moment earlier than he has to (108 109).
The whole time Tom is spending on the ledge, he s thinking and picturing that he will fall. He s gone
through so much in a few minutes, that extending the length of his life as long as he can is worth it.
Tom now understands that he doesn t want to die, especially over a piece of paper. He won t die earlier
than he has to. Once Tom makes it inside, his work isn t the most important thing in his life anymore.
Tom is able to break the glass and make it back into the safety of his apartment. Since it has in reality
only been a few minutes, Tom now decides to not work and go to the movie with Clare instead. As he
leaves, he sees the yellow paper, the pencil flying, scooping off the desk and, unimpeded by the
glassless window, sail out into the night and out of his life (109). Ironically, immediately after Tom
risks his life for the piece of paper, it simply flies out the window again. This time it sails out of his

Economic News Article Summary
Economics News Article Synopsis Thinking about economics in terms of gender and race seems
extremely strange and irrelevant at first. But after reading the article The Sobering Gender and Racial
Gap Among Economists is Hurting Everyone written by Pedro Nicolaci Da Costa on
businessinsider.com, I learned gender and race have a huge impact on the economy. What this article
touched on is few women and racial and ethnic minority are involved in economics. The world of
economics has a major population of strictly white men. The article states that less than 15% of full
professors teaching economics in the U.S. are women. So why is this gender and race gap so
important? It is a known fact that diversity impacts group dynamics and decision marking.

When Latin America meets the Wild Wild West, fireworks are sure to follow. If someone throws a
couple of sexy cowgirls into the mix, the heat is almost unbearable. The credit for developing an
exciting casino online video slot like Pistoleras goes to none other than Microgaming. In order for a
game like this to have appeal, it as to have icons that are sexy enough to draw male players. In that
regard, Pistoleras is very successful.
The color scheme and graphics are quite striking. For some unknown reason, the background was
made purple. While that might not make much sense, the contrast with the brilliant colors used for the
symbols really brings the game to life. Admittedly, the video features are a tad bit disappointing, but
the audio soundtrack is more than appropriate. It s nice to see one of the best online casinos, Polder

The Roaring 20 s Era Of Growth And Reform
The era of the 1920s, also known as the Roaring 20 s, was a revolutionary time in which radical
changes struck the American nation, drastically increasing advances in society and economy. New and
different forms of dance, music, clothing, behavior, and lifestyle were developed nationwide. The
Antebellum Period in the late 1700s increased rebellion, similar to the Roaring 20 s era of growth and
reform. As this time period brought profound changes, conflict, cultural excitement, and
experimentation, the population of America was experiencing an alteration in social values. The
American pride, similar to the pride we had when separating from the British, was still alive as
independence and freedom was strongly rebelled for. The Roaring 20 s depicted the growing
independence of the American public as the promised result of cultural excitement with the usage of
alcohol, experimentation with labor strikes, conflict over ones rights, and change in the prosperity of
the nation, was much linked to and differed from the Temperance movement, Labor movement,
Suffrage movement, and the Industrial Revolution. As lavish parties with flapper girls, jazz music,
suited up men, cigars, and alcohol were thrown during the era, cultural excitement was at its peak. The
1920 s was a highlighted era in which drinking was a social trend. Both, men and women drank in
parties as they danced the night away. Liquor was handed out often and was the center of excitement.
There were numerous clubs and party

Examples Of Suffering By Desperatio Victor Frankl
Anne and the others are able to find hope and enjoyment amidst their suffering by celebrating
Hanukkah and exchanging gifts, even in their miserable and dreary conditions. Even though they are
indefinitely confined to a small attic, Anne finds ways to brighten the lives of everyone around her by
decorating the stark living space and lightening the somber mood in the attic with her cheer and
exuberance. An example of this is shown when Anne distributes her thoughtful gifts to everyone,
lighting up their Hanukkah. In the scene, everyone (except Mr. Dussel) reminisces on how they used
to celebrate Hanukkah by exchanging gifts. Suddenly, Anne comes wearing a lampshade and bestows
everyone with a gift she made specially for them. Afterwards, Anne sings the Hanukkah song, and the
other praise Anne s kindness, which gives the group something to be thankful about and gives them a
brief moment of happiness even as they are surrounded by ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

He states, The attempt to develop a sense of humor and to see things in a humorous light is some kind
of a trick learned while mastering the art of living. Yet it is possible to practice the art of living even in
a concentration camp, although suffering is omnipresent... All through the night and late into the next
morning, we had to stand outside, frozen and soaked to the skin after the strain of our long journey.
And yet we were all very pleased! There was no chimney in this camp and Auschwitz was a long way
off (Frankl). Frankl and his group s behavior shows that even in the face of anguish and discomfort,
the human spirit finds ways to console and enliven itself and the others around it and find happiness in
the most distressing situations. Even though Frankl s group was living in dreary and miserable
conditions, they created meaning in their minds as a mechanism for hope and survival in order to

The Elizabethan Era The Elizabethan Era was during the 1500s. The Elizabethan Era was also known
as The Renaissance . The Renaissance occurred during Shakespearean times. During the Elizabethan
Era personal hygiene wasn t important. Diseases were prone because there wasn t any hygiene.
Medications and procedures were very basic. As a result, healthy lifestyles and safe medical
procedures were irrelevant to daily living because during the Elizabethan Era science and medicine

The belief about the causes of illness were based on the ancient teaching of Aristotle and Hippocrates (
Elizabethan Medicine and Illness). Physician, Surgeons, and Barbers were the three categories for
medical professions (Foster Par. 2) Physicians would dose themselves in vinegar and chew.
Elizabethan Physicians were very wealthy. By the end of the major wave of the plague at the
beginning of the 15th century, most of the physicians and many surgeons had died (Foster Par. 3).
Elizabethan surgeons were similar to barbers. Barbers could only pull teeth. The barbers were the only
ones left after the other doctors died (Foster Par. 3). The Elizabethan housewife used various herbs to
practice to produce homemade medicines and potion (Elizabethan Medicine and Illness). The church
provided some comfort for the poor (Elizabethan Medicine and Illness Par. 8). The local wise woman
was often the first person contacted by poor people (Elizabethan Medicine and Illness Par. 9). The
Elizabethan apothecary was like today s pharmacy. The three groupings of pharmaceutical workers
include Apothecary, Herbalist, and a Hedge Witch. (Foster Par. 2). Same physicians prescribed special
laxatives and directives to purge people of waste fluids that might carry the Black Death. (Dunn 63).
Surgical procedures were also very basic without the use of high tech machines and instruments
(Health and diet in Elizabethan England Par. 11 ). Burning and cutting your skin was a way to prevent
the plague. The Bubonic Plague was also treated by lancing the buboes and applying a warm poultice
of butter, onion, and garlic. (Elizabethan Medicine and Illness Par. 13). The Bubonic plague was also
treated with tobacco, arsening, lily root, and dried food (Williams Par. 12). Wounds were cleaned with
vinegar. They thought vinegar killed diseases. Treatment of earaches included roasted onion being

A Comparison of the Heat and Cold Imagery Used in Woman...
A Comparison of the Heat and Cold Imagery Used in Woman at Point Zero and Thousand Cranes
In the books Woman at Point Zero by Nawal El Saadawi, and Thousand Cranes by Yasunari
Kawabata, both authors use various forms of imagery that reoccur throughout the works. These
images are used not to be taken for their literal meanings, but instead to portray a deeper sense or
feeling that may occur several times in the book.
One type of imagery that both Saadawi and Kawabata use in their works is heat and cold imagery. In
the works, Woman at Point Zero and Thousand Cranes, Nawal El Saadawi and Yasunari Kawabata
each use heat and cold imagery to portray the same feelings of love and fear and /or the lack thereof.

Ota. For instance, The very face of the Shino, glowing warmly cool, made him think of Mrs. Ota the
previous quote provides an example of how Kawabata uses heat imagery to describe anything that
relates to Mrs. Ota or her relationship with Kikuji (Kawabata 137). In addition, sentences like, The
woman in Fumiko s mother came to him again, warm and naked. are used to portray the intimate
connection that existed between Kikuji and Mrs. Ota (104). Heat and cold imagery is also used to
portray intimacy in the following lines from Woman at Point Zero: We talked very quietly for a long
time and when we had said all we had to say, we gave ourselves to one another in a warm embrace
(Saadawi 82). Nawal El Saadawi and Yasunari Kawabata also use heat and cold imagery in their
works in order to display feelings of fear or uneasiness in a character. Usually it is a feeling of
coldness that a character feels when he or she becomes scared or afraid. A prime example of this cold
feeling due to an uneasiness is how Saadawi refers to the first time she ever hears Firdaus speak as
cutting deep down inside, cold as a knife (6). Time and time again, Saadawi uses cold imagery to
portray a look from the eyes, as in the following sentences which describe the look received by
Firdaus from a co worker, His look was that of a top executive to a minor official. I felt it land on my
head, and then drop down to my body like cold water... (74). The

dysfunctional conflict between the two mangers. Olds was at the center of the conflict. There was a
silent infighting between Palmer and Crosby for sharing the resource Olds. The stress level was high
for Olds because he was dealing with two managers performing two different tasks. This was also

(A) Let s take a moment to imagine an ice cream shop. (B) It provides many different flavors, flavors
that are really good, but there is one flavor that some people just don t like. You wouldn t try to shut
down the whole ice cream shop simply because one flavor displeases you. If you really didn t like that
flavor, just avoid it. Simply because that flavor is available to you doesn t mean you have to get it,
maybe somebody else really wants that ice cream flavor, it is not up to you to tell them I do not like
that flavor, therefore I want it to be unavailable to you. (C) Taking down the ice cream shop is just
ridiculous, and would definitely ruin more lives than it would benefit. (D) In the same fashion,

Bowlby s theory is fundamentally, based on scientific findings on early attachment development from
childhood to adulthood (Fischer, 2006). He observed that infants separated from their parents or
caregivers are emotionally distressed. Bowlby believed that individual s behavior could be naturally
well understood through the analysis of characteristic exploration that is connected with
psychodynamic affiliation. Bowlby s exodus from the traditional psychoanalytic theory at that time,
earned him many years of hatred by his pears. It was after his death in 1990 that the British analytic
community issued a formal apology to his family for their negative action against him (Fischer, 2006).
Culture/Diversity: According to Health and Human Services Office of Minority Health, approximately
20% of African Americans are more likely to experience serious mental health problems than the
general population (Census, 2016). This is due to exposure to violent environment and homelessness
which can increase anxiety, post traumatic stress disorder, depression etc., (Ward, 2013). African
Americans are more likely to be victims of violent crime which are influenced by the risk for
developing a mental health issue. Such as; Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), suicide, attention

the African American family could be seen as a

The Pros And Cons Of Forced Marriage
Forced marriage is when one of the two parties involved, this usually being the female, does not
consent to the marriage but are forced into it by their family or community. In Australia, forced
marriage is illegal but this does not seem to stop people from being taken overseas to be married, so
should this practice still continue to be illegal in Australia if it isn t being prevented?
In many cultures and religions, marriage is considered a family matter. Parents believe that it is their
duty to choose who their child will marry, and by not doing so they would be going against tradition
and neglecting this fundamental part of the marriage process (Justice.gc.ca. 2016). By going through
with a forced marriage, the daughter or son who is a part of the marriage is seen to be bringing honor
to his/her family. This could make the daughter/son feel like she/he is helping their family by going
through with the marriage (Rubinstein, 2013).
In forced marriages, a lot of women tend to not have a choice and are often abused by their husbands
after the ceremony is over. Joelle Mazoud is a first generation Australian Lebanese woman who was
forced into marriage at the age of 16. A week after arriving in Lebanon, she met her husband once and
was then married. Joelle was left in Lebanon with her new husband. She suffered 11 miscarriages over
8 years and she was constantly being abused (Angel, 2013). Women should not have to suffer under
such cruel circumstances just to bring honour to her family.
If the young woman or man refuses to go through with the marriage, they are instantly exiled from
their family and they are looked down upon by their community as a disappointment. Amina was set
to be married at the age of 18 to a man she had never met. Amina refused the forced marriage because
she still wanted to study and have a life of her own. As a result, Amina lost all of her relationships
with her family and community and was forced to live on her own and become independent (Vidal,
2016).
In Australia it is illegal to cause a forced marriage or be a third party to a forced marriage. The
Commonwealth Criminal Code Act 1995 contains the offenses of forced marriage which includes
agreeing to a forced marriage of a person who

Dumbest Generation Analysis Essay
AP Language Summer Assignment
Chapter 1:
1. In chapter one of The Dumbest Generation, Mike Bauerlein makes several statements about our
generation and comes to a conclusion that helps set the groundwork for the entire book. His analysis
of today s youth states that the current generation is lacking when it comes to intellectual knowledge.
He provides evidence that states that today s under thirty population in the United States does not have
adequate knowledge, and their lack of knowledge with affect them greatly in their adulthood years.
2. As with most of this book, the main supports that Bauerlein uses for his conclusion come in the
form of statistics. As chapter 1 progresses, he cites more and more surveys, polls, and studies ... Show

Many of the statistics shocked me and made me wonder about the future for our generation. As I
continued reading, I realized how much of the surveys and statistics that he used were deceptive and
manipulated my way of thinking. Bauerlein uses and abuses statistics to sway his readers thoughts to
what he believes is correct. Statistics are not as reliable as they may seem but the author did use valid
and trustworthy resources and organizations such as The National Board of Science. The argument
was very convincing and did make me wonder about the future for our generation and made me even
more worried about the next generation after mine. Overall, the argument was strong and well
planned.
Chapter 2:
1. In chapter two of The Dumbest Generation, Mark Bauerlein expands upon his stated conclusion
from the first chapter. He proclaims that one of the main reasons for the knowledge deficits of the
under thirty generation is a nationwide bibliophobia , which is a fear of books or rather the lack of
willingness to read.
2. The main evidence that Bauerlein gives us to support his theory is statistics that are found in a
survey that show the falling reading rates for people of all ages in the last 30 years. The most popular
survey was held by the National Endowment of the Arts Association entitled Survey of Public
Participation in the Arts.

the fears were realized years earlier when the Arapahoes, Cheyennes and Sioux came together to

Physical Evidence Analysis
Evidence can take the form of several types: Testimonial, Digital, Physical and Miscellaneous for the
ones that do not fit into the other three categories. Physical evidence are the specific items and objects
found at a crime scene that links the perpetrator to the area or overall location (Gardner, 2012). These
can be in the form of an object that is over turned and documented with photographs or something
tangible like trace evidence, fibers and hair that are transferred between a person and another or the
environment (Grenier, 2013). It is nationally agreed upon that physical evidence never lies, it
establishes a series of facts that are unquestionable (Gardner, 2012). It s existence. however, can be

Fingerprints are the chance impressions created when areas of the friction ridge skin of the finger

something (Yourdictionary.com, n.d.) as time progressed and languages changed, it became widely
used as a synonym for something false or made up (Vocabulary.com, n.d.). While the words forged

print in his scientific report as the planting of a fingerprint on a surface, so that the fingerprint appears
to have been left by the finger or fingers of the person to whom it can be identified (Wertheim,

The Blind Side By John Lee Hancock
On the surface, The Blind Side may seem like a great feel good movie, but once the movie is
analyzed, it s apparent that the movie is filled with blatant stereotypes as well as racism. The Blind
Side, based off of a true story, shows the protagonist escaping poverty against all odds and growing up
to be very successful with the help of a select few. Although some may argue that escaping poverty
and becoming successful like Michael did is very possible this connotation of escaping poverty
depicted in the movie is highly unrealistic, contributes to derogative stereotypes, and would also be
very unlikely to happen in real life. The Blind Side, a feel good sports drama intended for everyone,
especially young kids and teenagers, was released on November 20th in 2009 and was directed by
John Lee Hancock. The Blind side was very successful in the box office, grossing hundreds of
millions of dollars and quickly became the movie to see of the thanksgiving holiday season. The Blind
Side starred Sandra Bullock, playing the role of an extremely wealthy white woman. Her character,
Mrs. Tuohy, a feisty, passionate and caring Christian woman, took in a homeless African American
kid, Michael Oher. Despite the success of the movie in the box offices, the movie received very mixed
reviews from critics. The mixed opinions of this movie are largely due to the controversial issues the
movie addresses as well as the controversial issues this movie does not address. Many critics thought

Health Care Marketing Reflection Essay
Health Care Marketing Reflection Essay
Markets change, tastes change, so the companies and the individuals who choose to compete in those
markets must change. ( Wang, n.d. as cited by Morrison, p. 113). In modern medicine, disease
treatment is more importance than disease prevention, as doctors focus more on treatment of
symptoms of rather than determining its root cause. This is mirrored in the media by the large numbers
of direct consumer advertisements aimed at persuading patients themself to ask their doctors about
various drug. Direct consumer marketing in the health care industry is allowed in the USA. The health
care industry includes numerous subdivisions devoted to make available health care services and
products. The ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It is true that the patients are more willing to discuss their symptoms as they saw those symptoms
referred in the advertisements, but this does not improve the patient communication, as most of the
patients are only interested in asking for a prescription as advertised with barely any information of
the relevant medical facts. The doctors when asked for a specific prescription may give it to the
patient, rather than talk more about the condition leading to over medicated and unhealthy society.
Not enough lashes? Ask your doctor about LATISSE the first and only FDA approved treatment that
grows lashes longer, fuller and darker. (Allergan, Inc. 2010). The commercial featuring Brooke
Shields, a celebrity urging customers to use Latisse to grow fuller lashes. Sometimes the consumer
does not even look at the side effect; if it s good for the celebrity it is good for them. Advertisements
like these use strategies that generate false impressions, manipulate, and lead on consumers instead of
enlightening them about the drug.
Most advertisements are impractical in representing medicines part in attaining health, downplaying
drug risks, presenting visual elements to distract consumers like an antihistamine commercial showing
a moving buzzing bee as the risk information is read. Various advertisements show people reclaim full
control of their lives after consuming the drug. The advertisements do

Observation Of Literacy Learners
The fourth grade group of literacy learners I worked with was intermediate readers and writers and yet
their individual skill sets varied in some degree. This became evident during the rereads of a close
reading lesson. The lesson consisted of two different passages pertaining to the topic of hurricanes.
However, the lesson was revised by day two to include the second passage. This decision was based
on one of the factors of text complexity involving text structure. Students were able to compare and
contrast the passages, determine the point of views, and synthesize information involving a hurricane
survivor. Choosing a complex text became the most difficult part of the lesson being my first lesson
on the topic. I followed the International Reading Association (IRA) and National Council for
Teachers of English (NCTE) (2014d) guide for choosing complex text, which stated text, is complex if
it is higher than the students independent reading level and if the text ... Show more content on

Before reading the passages, I discussed with students the need to apply their reading strengths and
strategies to help organize key details needed to answer questions. According to the media segment
Metacognition: Thinking About Thinking (Laureate Education, Inc. 2014i) it stated literacy learners
must know when to apply skills for comprehension of text. My group did exactly that as one student
preferred to highlight key details and make notes in the margins. Another student took her time during
silent reading always referring back to the questions. One way to improve future lessons dealing with
metacognitive skills is to display strategies and ability identifiers as a reminder to apply during any
literacy lesson. During the lesson, my own metacognition of literacy was tested. Since focusing on
long passages is quite a challenge, analyzing information according to each paragraph then organizing

Jersualem by William Blake Essay
Jersualem by William Blake Of the true masterpieces in the English language, one of the most
metaphysically challenging and eternally relevant is William Blake s Jerusalem. It took Blake four
thousand lines etched onto one hundred plates to put his reinterpretation of the prophetic books of the
Bible into an English context. The poem shows not only Blake s new understanding of the Old
Testament gained from his recent learning of the Hebrew language, but his freedom from the Miltonic
tradition. In the preface to Jerusalem Blake writes that it is a, more consolidated extended Work,
(Keynes,620) than he has tried before. The primary reason for his ability to begin such an undertaking
when he did in 1804, is from the liberating release ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Awake! awake O sleeper of the land of shadows, wake! expand!(4:6 ) Here is the initial call, the call
to Albion, which is Israel, that has been superimposed on England. For as we see later, All is Eternal
Death unless you can weave a chaste/ Body over an unchaste Mind!(21:11) He needs England to feel
the way he feels, to see not just the trees in the forest but the color of each of those trees, and which
have sparrows living in them. For Blake, life is Eternal Death, and only in the imagination can there
be refuge. Thus the first contradiction appears; the idea that one must awaken not the physical self, but
the Los within. Awake, but on the inside, keep your temporal self asleep it does too much damage
when arisen. For no immortal hand or eye can weave a chaste body over any mind. An image forms
here of Blake resting his hands ever so on gently the English people to begin to sense their new
directions. Herein lies the portal through which he traveled in order to exit the long Miltonic shadow
the England Blake was moved to prophesize to was not Milton s. The factories had changed that. And
though man is ever unchanged, it is democratization and technology that drag the cart of history.
Blake saw then most clearly that he was not Milton, nor should he try to be. His England, his Albion
was starving for something vastly different than Milton s England was. Enter now into Jerusalem s
second chapter,

The Solid South During The 1980 s
In the south during the 1980 s the Democratic Party gained strength and a solid foothold. This time
was known as the Solid South. It was called this due to the fact that white powerful democrats were
able to get elected anyone they wanted using a variety of underhanded tactics including fraud,
violence and blatantly racist laws. The grandfather clause was one of these racist laws. This law stated
that an individual was not allowed to vote if their grandfather was unable to vote in slavery days.
Luckily the U.S. Supreme Court struck it down. Sadly, however other rulings by the courts like
William v. Mississippi, (1898) allowed states to add poll taxes and require literacy tests to voting
requirements. These laws dramatically reduced the amount

I Had Been Out Of The Hospital For Two Weeks Essay
I had been out of the hospital for two weeks. I was staying on track with my medicine, with the help of
my husband Bryon. I have been dealing with depression for a while now and I eventually ended up
being emitted to the hospital. I decided to take time off work for a while until I got back in the swing
of things. Me and my husband Bryon decided that was the best thing to do. Every day Bryon would
make sure I took my medicine in the morning before he went to work and every evening when he got
back. That s what my psychiatrist recommended we do. I had been suicidal, and they wanted to make
sure didn t try anything to take my life. Bryon removed all of the sharp objects from the house, like
knives and scissors. I didn t feel like all of that was necessary, but I could see why he did that with the
state of mind I was in before I was emitted to the hospital. Battling with severe depression took a toll
on me. There was no definite cause for my depression either. It s like no matter how good things were
going in my life, there would always be a little bit of sadness that lingered. I was feeling confident that
I was going to really get better and more stable. It is just so hard sometimes to find the medicine that
worked. It is like trial and error. My medicine would have to be adjusted to get me feeling the best I
could, but I was hoping that this was a real fix. I mean I knew that I would not always be happy
because in life we all go through ups and downs, but I just wanted to

The Hindu Temple Of Dayton
Hinduism goes back as far as fifteen hundred B.C., there are currently over nine hundred million
practicing Hinduists in the world today. I had never been to a Hindu temple before and it was a new
and exciting experience. I did not know about the Hindu religion going to this project. During my time
here in Dayton I have been to Lebanese festival and interacted with many people of Arabic descent.
Hinduism as religion is very broad. Choosing to interview someone of the Hindu faith was an easy
choice to make because I had always been interested in Hinduism. Some of my favorite movies had
implied Hindu concepts in them such as karma. I decided to attend the Hindu Temple of Dayton for
the interview. The temple was established in nineteen eighty six by two priests and currently has over
six hundred patron families that visit weekly. As I entered the temple there was a sign to take off your
shoes. People were supposed to take off their shoes as they entered the temple, it is a form of respect
to the deities. As I was observing the service, a priest stood in front of a particular shrine and chanted
while ringing a bell. After he was finished chanting he handed everyone banana. I found out later on
the deity he chanted about was named Vishnu and the banana he offered everyone afterwards a symbol
of self sacrifice or a pledge of righteous to the deity (Pradeepa, Offering the Fruits to Hindu Gods ).
The man I spoke with is a priest named Ramesh Rajamani. He had worked at the Hindu

  • 3. Woodchucks by Maxine Kumin Essay Woodchucks by Maxine Kumin Maxine Kumin?s, Woodchucks provides an interesting and creative perspective into the mind state of those influenced by nazi warfare. What begins as a seemingly humorous cat and mouse hunt, reminiscent of such movie classics as Caddyshack, soon develops into an insatiable lust for blood. Kumin?s descriptive language provides the reader with the insight necessary to understand to the speaker?s psychology as they are driven beyond the boundaries of pacifism. The poem does indeed have a rhyme scheme, yet doesn?t conform to conventional forms of rhyme such as A, B, A, B, etc. Rather, each stanza seems to follow the order of A, B, C, A, C, B, which may not be apparent to the reader at first, but doesn?t ... This is especially evident in the reference to the carrots being ?beheaded? which provides an appropriate transition into the next stanza. The third stanza is the inevitable ?fall from grace? as our speaker has finally ?taken off the gloves? and resorts to the vengeance of cold steel. The speaker utters one last phrase of motivation as he/she eerily takes pleasure in holding the tool of his nemesis? destruction. ?The food from our mouths, I said, righteously thrilling to the feel of the .22, the bullets? neat noses.? The killer now takes a moment to lament on his/her course of action, acknowledging that her pacifism is a thing of the past; that he/she was once comparable to Darwin and his pension for non violence. However, this does little to dissuade he/she from swiftly taking the life of the pests. ?I, a lapsed pacifist fallen from grace puffed with Darwinian pieties for killing, now drew a bead on the little woodchuck?s face. He died down in the everbearing roses.? This stanza marked the turning point of the narrative as our speaker has been pushed beyond their boundaries into an unfamiliar realm of pleasure. A side of them has been exposed that has remained dormant for what appears to be the duration of their life. It is now a newfound sensation that has thrilled them beyond ... • 5. Similarities Between Mill And Nietzsche Introduction In today s paper, I will be discussing Mill and Nietzsche. These two have differing opinions on what the biggest threat to society are: Mill argues that Freedom of Speech is essential to finding the truth (Mill, 2006, p. P12) so even controversial opinions should be listened to. He fears that the tyranny of the majority could mean the Truth could be lost because alternative opinions are not listened to. The other threat to society to Mill is that women have fewer rights then men such as voting he believes women should be allowed to have the same opportunities (John Stuart Mill; Alan Ryan, 2006). In contrast, Nietzsche believes the biggest threat to society is the assumption that morality is natural. Morality is dangerous because ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Nietzsche s argument about morality is, largely, about rejecting Christianity (Frederick Nietzsche; Douglas Smith, 2008, p. P203). His statements about morality can be argued is a tool to critique organised religion in general. In contrast, Mill s goal is to make society stronger through learning the Truth (Mill, 2006, p. P12) and allowing equality (John Stuart Mill; Alan Ryan, 2006). The two s goals are different hence their conclusions are quite different. Mill s opinion on biggest threat to society Firstly, like I stated in the introduction, Mill believes that the biggest threat to society is that Freedom of Speech being stifled and women not having the same rights and opportunities as men. This is a threat to society for several reasons. Mill pointed out that the opinion which it is attempted to suppress by authority may possibly be true (Frederick Nietzsche; Douglas Smith, 2008, p. P386) which indicates that an unpopular opinion could be true ignoring this opinion would mean the public would be pursuing something which is incorrect this would clearly damage society. Mill also stated that though the silenced opinion be an error, it may, and very commonly does, contain a portion of truth; and since the general or prevailing opinion on any subject is rarely or never the whole truth, it is ... New and different forms of dance, music, clothing, behavior, and lifestyle were developed nationwide. The Antebellum Period in the late 1700s increased rebellion, similar to the Roaring 20 s era of growth and reform. As this time period brought profound changes, conflict, cultural excitement, and experimentation, the population of America was experiencing an alteration in social values. The American pride, similar to the pride we had when separating from the British, was still alive as independence and freedom was strongly rebelled for. The Roaring 20 s depicted the growing independence of the American public as the promised result of cultural excitement with the usage of alcohol, experimentation with labor strikes, conflict over ones rights, and change in the prosperity of the nation, was much linked to and differed from the Temperance movement, Labor movement, Suffrage movement, and the Industrial Revolution. As lavish parties with flapper girls, jazz music, suited up men, cigars, and alcohol were thrown during the era, cultural excitement was at its peak. Examples Of Suffering By Desperatio Victor Frankl Anne and the others are able to find hope and enjoyment amidst their suffering by celebrating Hanukkah and exchanging gifts, even in their miserable and dreary conditions. Even though they are indefinitely confined to a small attic, Anne finds ways to brighten the lives of everyone around her by decorating the stark living space and lightening the somber mood in the attic with her cheer and exuberance. An example of this is shown when Anne distributes her thoughtful gifts to everyone, lighting up their Hanukkah. In the scene, everyone (except Mr. Dussel) reminisces on how they used to celebrate Hanukkah by exchanging gifts. Suddenly, Anne comes wearing a lampshade and bestows everyone with a gift she made specially for them. I effortlessly hit five mailboxes, a sign, while being tossed back and forth through several trees like a ball in a pinball machine. Branches whacking me in the face through my broken windows, until finally I came to this life alternating moment, was this it? Then, right before my car hit headfirst into its last tree and finally it came to a stop. I took a deep breathe. Then, I looked around and realized that I was alive. I opened my door and took a staggered few steps outside the car. I yelled for help because I couldn t seem to find all the pieces of my phone. Everything is my car was tossed around and broken. My car looked like it had been hammered all around. There was no way I could drive it now and the windows busted out on each side. • 21. The Pros And Cons Of Forced Marriage Forced marriage is when one of the two parties involved, this usually being the female, does not consent to the marriage but are forced into it by their family or community. In Australia, forced marriage is illegal but this does not seem to stop people from being taken overseas to be married, so should this practice still continue to be illegal in Australia if it isn t being prevented? In many cultures and religions, marriage is considered a family matter. Parents believe that it is their duty to choose who their child will marry, and by not doing so they would be going against tradition and neglecting this fundamental part of the marriage process (Justice.gc.ca. 2016). By going through with a forced marriage, the daughter or son who is a part of the marriage is seen to be bringing honor to his/her family. This could make the daughter/son feel like she/he is helping their family by going through with the marriage (Rubinstein, 2013). In forced marriages, a lot of women tend to not have a choice and are often abused by their husbands after the ceremony is over. Joelle Mazoud is a first generation Australian Lebanese woman who was forced into marriage at the age of 16. A week after arriving in Lebanon, she met her husband once and was then married. Joelle was left in Lebanon with her new husband. She suffered 11 miscarriages over 8 years and she was constantly being abused (Angel, 2013). Women should not have to suffer under such cruel circumstances just to bring honour to her family. If the young woman or man refuses to go through with the marriage, they are instantly exiled from their family and they are looked down upon by their community as a disappointment. Amina was set to be married at the age of 18 to a man she had never met. Amina refused the forced marriage because she still wanted to study and have a life of her own. As a result, Amina lost all of her relationships with her family and community and was forced to live on her own and become independent (Vidal, 2016). He provides evidence that states that today s under thirty population in the United States does not have adequate knowledge, and their lack of knowledge with affect them greatly in their adulthood years. 2. As I continued reading, I realized how much of the surveys and statistics that he used were deceptive and manipulated my way of thinking. Bauerlein uses and abuses statistics to sway his readers thoughts to what he believes is correct. Statistics are not as reliable as they may seem but the author did use valid and trustworthy resources and organizations such as The National Board of Science. The argument was very convincing and did make me wonder about the future for our generation and made me even more worried about the next generation after mine. Overall, the argument was strong and well planned. Chapter 2: 1. In chapter two of The Dumbest Generation, Mark Bauerlein expands upon his stated conclusion from the first chapter. He proclaims that one of the main reasons for the knowledge deficits of the under thirty generation is a nationwide bibliophobia , which is a fear of books or rather the lack of willingness to read. 2. The main evidence that Bauerlein gives us to support his theory is statistics that are found in a survey that show the falling reading rates for people of all ages in the last 30 years. • 26. The Blind Side By John Lee Hancock On the surface, The Blind Side may seem like a great feel good movie, but once the movie is analyzed, it s apparent that the movie is filled with blatant stereotypes as well as racism. The Blind Side, based off of a true story, shows the protagonist escaping poverty against all odds and growing up to be very successful with the help of a select few. Although some may argue that escaping poverty and becoming successful like Michael did is very possible this connotation of escaping poverty depicted in the movie is highly unrealistic, contributes to derogative stereotypes, and would also be very unlikely to happen in real life. The Blind Side, a feel good sports drama intended for everyone, especially young kids and teenagers, was released on November 20th in 2009 and was directed by John Lee Hancock. The Blind side was very successful in the box office, grossing hundreds of millions of dollars and quickly became the movie to see of the thanksgiving holiday season. The Blind Side starred Sandra Bullock, playing the role of an extremely wealthy white woman. Her character, Mrs. Tuohy, a feisty, passionate and caring Christian woman, took in a homeless African American kid, Michael Oher. Despite the success of the movie in the box offices, the movie received very mixed reviews from critics. The mixed opinions of this movie are largely due to the controversial issues the movie addresses as well as the controversial issues this movie does not address. Many critics thought ... This became evident during the rereads of a close reading lesson. The lesson consisted of two different passages pertaining to the topic of hurricanes. However, the lesson was revised by day two to include the second passage. This decision was based on one of the factors of text complexity involving text structure. Students were able to compare and contrast the passages, determine the point of views, and synthesize information involving a hurricane survivor. Choosing a complex text became the most difficult part of the lesson being my first lesson on the topic. Jersualem by William Blake Essay Jersualem by William Blake Of the true masterpieces in the English language, one of the most metaphysically challenging and eternally relevant is William Blake s Jerusalem. It took Blake four thousand lines etched onto one hundred plates to put his reinterpretation of the prophetic books of the Bible into an English context. The poem shows not only Blake s new understanding of the Old Testament gained from his recent learning of the Hebrew language, but his freedom from the Miltonic tradition. In the preface to Jerusalem Blake writes that it is a, more consolidated extended Work, (Keynes,620) than he has tried before. The primary reason for his ability to begin such an undertaking when he did in 1804, is from the liberating release ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... For Blake, life is Eternal Death, and only in the imagination can there be refuge. Thus the first contradiction appears; the idea that one must awaken not the physical self, but the Los within. Awake, but on the inside, keep your temporal self asleep it does too much damage when arisen. For no immortal hand or eye can weave a chaste body over any mind. Herein lies the portal through which he traveled in order to exit the long Miltonic shadow the England Blake was moved to prophesize to was not Milton s. The factories had changed that.
