Milk Sales, whose companies produce dry milk as well
as a variety of other dairy products. Rance Miles also
serves in the same roles with several additional dairy
companies, such as CS Facilities, LLC, which owns
and operates a milk drying plant.
The process of powdering milk begins with trucks of
fresh milk, which arrive at the creamery for
processing. While waiting in a holding tank for
processing, the milk goes through quality testing. It
then passes through an evaporator, which removes
approximately 33 percent of its water.
3. The evaporator includes a partial vacuum that lowers
the boiling point of the milk, which allows for water
removal without damaging the milk itself.
Once the milk is approximately 50 percent solids, it
undergoes pasteurization and then passes through a
separator that removes the butterfat. The
standardization process then mixes the milk's
components to predetermined percentages, after
which the condensed milk travels to the dryer, which
may be a heated drum that evaporates the
remaining water, a chamber containing heated air,
or a high-speed atomizing wheel. Lastly, the process
ends when the creamery packages the dry milk and
sends the final product off to its clients.
