1. Negatives
Alright, we have been studying some pretty in depth
concepts over the past few lessons. Let’s take a break and
learn an easy one: Negatives.
2. Negatives
Negatives in Hebrew, are very much like English. In English,
if you want to say something negative, typically you put a
word (don’t) in front of the verb to indicate this action:
I want a sandwich (positive)
I don’t want a sandwich (negative)
Hebrew does the exact same thing. The Hebrew word to
form a negative with is לא (lo) meaning no.
That’s it. Nothing to it. Just put לא right before the verb and
you have a negative. There are a few sometimes confusing
points though.
3. Negatives
לא sounds identical to לו , but they are very different. לו is a
word meaning ‘to him’ usually used to show possession. לא
is the negative marker and it also literally means ‘no’. Notice
the difference in the following:
הספר הזה לא שייך לו (This book doesn’t belong to him)
When using לא with the demonstrative pronouns ( זה ), place
לא between the demonstrative pronoun and the noun.
זה לא הספר שלי (This is not my book).
We will delve deeper into other negative expressions later.
For now, let’s learn some more adjectives.
