1. pa’al 2nd י and 2nd ו
infinitives
In this lesson, we will take a look at the infinitive
form of 2nd י and 2nd ו in the pa’al בניין . This group
will be a little different than the ones we have
studied so far.
2. pa’al 2nd י and 2nd ו
infinitives
Back in lesson 15, we learned how to form the
present tense of these verbs. In the present tense,
the י and the ו drop out of the conjugation ( רץ ,גר
נח , etc.)
I added the missing root letter in the gender column
so you could learn it with the verb. The reason is
that, in the infinitive, the missing root letter will
show up and, unless you know what that letter is, it
will be almost impossible to know which letter
belongs in the infinitive.
3. pa’al 2nd י and 2nd ו
infinitives
Remember that the infinitive is marked with the
characteristic ל prefix. This will appear in these
verbs as well.
The infinitive is formed by simply adding the ל
before the three root letters of the verb. XXX .ל
לגור
לשיר
There are two different vowel combinations for
these verbs. We will explore them on the next
slide.
4. pa’al 2nd י and 2nd ו
infinitives
The first set of vowels are for verbs that have a 2nd
root letter of י. These verbs use the XiXal vowel
pattern.
The second set of vowels for the 2nd ו roots use the
XuXal pattern.
This is hard to explain using the X notation but the
second root letter is the vowel.
לגור (lagur)
לשיר (lashir)
5. pa’al 2nd י and 2nd ו
infinitives
The patterns of these gizrot are not very
complicated, but they do illustrate the importance
of knowing the root of a verb. You will see in later
lessons on other tenses that this becomes even
more important.
Make sure you know how to find the root in any
verb because it will be even more important later.
This is just the first example of how it matters.
