This lesson plan is for an 8th standard Social Science class on weathering. The learning outcomes are for students to understand what weathering is, the different types of weathering, and how human activities cause weathering. The lesson will involve defining weathering, discussing the types of physical, chemical and biological weathering through a chart. Students will participate in a group activity to identify human activities that lead to weathering, and present their ideas. At the end, the teacher will review the key points about weathering and ask review questions.

Concept : Weathering
PRE – REQUISITES
Students had previous knowledge about weathering through the previous class on Rocks.
TEACHING – LEANING RESOURCES
Chart ( types of weathering), pictures (human activities causes weathering), Activity card,
models (soil, m-sand, sand), other teaching learning resources.
INTRODUCTION
Teacher entering the class and say good morning. Teacher made a friendly talk with
students. Then the teacher ask some questions to the students. Do you see sand, soil and m
sand? Students say yes. How Can we get this items? Students say m-sand from rock, soil from
under earth and also sand was from ocean. Teacher say, we can get this through a process. The
process is called weathering and today you are study about what is weathering.
3. DEVELOPMENT OF THE STUDY

PUPIL’S RESPONSE
Weathering
Different
types of rocks
BB
You have learned about the different types of
rocks. Is it?
They undergo various changes with time. Such
disintegration or decomposition of rocks is
known as weathering. As a result, the physical
and chemical composition of rocks change.
Teacher ask the students, are you know
different types of weathering?
Teacher shows chart on boards.

MECHANICAL WEATHERING
WEATHERING
Students say yes. We
have learned different
types of rocks.
Students say no.
4. Physical/
mechanical
weathering
Chemical
Weathering
Do you know physical weathering?
The expansion and contraction of minerals due
to the variations in temperature results in
weathering. Disintegration also occurs due to
the freezing of water in the fissures of rocks.
Oxygen, carbon dioxide, water, etc. react with
the minerals and result in the chemi- cal
decomposition of rocks.

Students say no
5. Biological
Weathering
Weathering
helps humans
in many ways.
The plant roots penetrating into the fissures in
rocks, burrowing of animals and the
decomposition of plant and animal remains lead
to weathering. Apart from these, human
activities such as mining and quarrying also
lead to weathering.
Are you here this term before?
Lot of human activities that lead to Weathering.
Are you know the activities?
Yes, quarrying, mining, construction and
destruction of hill etc are the activities.
Teacher shows the picture related with the
causes of weathering.
Students say yes.
Students say yes, it is
mining.
6.
7. Students, weathering helps in humans in many
ways such as minerals in rocks get extracted,
helps in mining, causes soil formation etc….
Group Activity
Teachers divide the students in to different
group. Teacher give activity card and topic
Topic: what are the human activities that lead to
the weathering of rocks?
After writing, teacher tell the students to present
the ideas.
Students are writing.
Students are
presenting the ideas.
CONSOLIDATION
Teachers explain briefly about meaning of weathering, types of weathering, causes of
weathering and merits of weathering. Then the teachers ask some questions. Teachers conclude
the point by saying weathering is an importance process.
REVIW QUESTIONS
a. What is weathering?
b. What are the different types of weathering?
c. What are the human activities that lead to the weathering of rocks?
d. How was weathering helps humans?
POST LESSON ACTIVIIES
The carbon dioxide dissolved in rain water causes weathering of rocks on the
earth’s surface. Identify the types of weathering?
Visit various places in your locality and identify the human activities that result in
weathering.
