Benefits of Omega-3 Fatty Acids Essay
More and more research studies are finding that getting enough Omega–3 fatty acids is critical to
our health in many ways. Omega–3 fats are essential for the survival of the human body, but our
bodies can't manufacture them on their own, so we need to get them from the foods we eat. Good
dietary sources of Omega–3 fatty acids are fish and seafood, like salmon, tuna, sardines, halibut,
herring, algae and krill, plus some plants and nut oils such as flaxseeds and flaxseed oil, canola oil,
soybeans and soybean oil, pumpkin seeds and pumpkin seed oil, purslane, perilla seed oil, and
walnuts and walnut oil.
Also known as polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs), Omega–3s play a critical role in brain function
and in normal growth and development. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This diet includes very little meat, which is high in omega–6 fatty acids, and includes foods rich in
Omega–3s such as whole grains, fresh fruits and vegetables, fish, olive oil, and garlic, and drinking
wine in moderation. Numerous studies have shown that those who follow this type of diet are less
prone to develop heart disease.
Omega–3s may also be beneficial for:
High cholesterol
Those on a Mediterranean–style diet are prone to have higher HDL, or "good" cholesterol levels,
which help support heart health. Inuit Eskimos, who get plenty of Omega–3s from eating fatty fish,
also tend to have increased HDL cholesterol and decreased triglycerides, or fats in the blood.
Research studies have shown that fish oil supplements reduce triglyceride levels. Finally, walnuts
(that contain high levels of alpha linolenic acid, or ALA, which is type of Omega–3 fatty acid) have
been reported to lower total cholesterol and triglycerides in people who have high cholesterol levels.
High blood pressure
Studies have shown that people with hypertension were able to lower their blood pressure by
consuming diets high in Omega–3 fatty acids or taking fish oil supplements. After analyzing the
results of 17 clinical studies using fish oil supplements, researchers determined that taking 3 or more
grams of fish oil per day may lower blood pressure in people with untreated hypertension.
Heart disease
One of the best ways to help prevent heart disease is to

how the environment and other factors affect individuals of a population. Community ecology deals
with the interaction of multiple species in a community as well as their interaction with the
environment. Ecosystem ecology deals with energy flow and chemical cycles in an environment.

Coal burning is the human activity that is most greatly contributing to increased mercury levels.
34. See attached
35. Mercury wet deposition levels are highest in Florida, Illinois, Missouri, and Arkansas. This is
most probably due to these states having many coal–burning power plants.
36. Largemouth bass and spotted bass exceed this limit.
37. Largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, rock bass, spotted bass, pumpkinseed, rainbow–cutthroat
trout, and brown trout exceed this limit. This mercury level is most probably lower than the level for
humans because humans are larger than many of the piscivorous mammals and are able to resist
more mercury. In addition, these mammals consume fish in much higher quantities.
38. Yes, on average the largemouth bass has a mercury level of about 0.45 ug/g, which is higher than
the recommended amount for humans.
39. The mercury concentrations were highest in sediment because while rain can distribute the
mercury and "dilute" it to some degree, the mercury that falls to the ground in sediment is deposited
in high concentrations, with little dilution.

Quotes 'The Ocean Can Be So Cruel'
Neil Lagrana Summer project August 5, 2014 Language Arts Explain the quote " the ocean can be
so cruel" The ocean does not care who you are, how old you are, what you like to eat or how good
you are at chess. Out there in the ocean, everyone is treated the same. Now normally people wouldnt
care, but if you are a fishermen or perhaps someone in a cruise ship, I would think that you would
care what the ocean thinks otherwise the ocean might send a big wave towards you and possibly
send your and your boat down into the ocean. Now unless, you are a surfer i doubt you might enjoy
that, especially, if you are Santiago, an old fisherman who has gone 84 straight days without a haul.
And so, the ocean can be considered cruel. As it gifts an old man nothing. But the ocean is incapable
of sympathy, it and the creatures living in it are a force of nature. Santiago states it himself skill and
luck is needed to survive. He has become the laughingstock of his town, and as a fisherman, you
live and die by the trade. At the start of his 85th day santiago ventured out into the sea with
determination. He had to repay his debts to the store owner for the food and to prove his skill to the
town. Also to show that manolin's efforts to feed ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It was dead, so he lashed it to the skiff of his boat, his plan was to use the sea to carry the fish for
him back to his town, and the sea did not care. This was the ocean, under it, creatures live and die,
creatures do what it takes to survive. The scent of blood from the marlin attracted a mako shark and
it took a bite of a free meal before it was chased away. But other schools of shark came, and were
too many for one weary, cramping old man. If only he had the boy with him. His prize was stolen
from him by his brothers and sisters, perhaps it was revenge for all the shark liver oil he drank. It

Why Does Tuna Melt Muffin?
Chapter 5: Tuna
For your information, Tuna is a member of the mackerel family. It is commonly found in the warmer
waters of the Pacific, Indian, Atlantic, and Mediterranean oceans. It is one of the most popular fish
being canned and sold in the market worldwide nowadays. Why did this book feature Tuna as a
healty protein–rich snack? Did you know that when packed in water, Tuna is known to be a great
lean protein. It is rich in omega–3 nutrients which is known to increase the body's High–density
cholesterol level (HDL) or known as the good cholesterol and decrease Low–Density Cholesterol
levels (LDL) or the body's bad cholesterol.

The Economic Significance Of Pacific Island Tuna
This paper discusses the economic significance of tuna fishing, and related industries to island
nations in the Southwest Pacific, including the Cook Islands, the Federated States of Micronesia,
Kiribati, Marshall, Nauru, Niue, Palau, Papa New Guinea, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Tonga, Tuvalu,
and Vanuatu. Due to the limited number of exploitable resources available to these island nations,
tuna is an essential renewable resource, and, represents a multi–billion dollar–a–year global industry
for these communities. The Pacific Islands contribute a third of the world's annual tuna supply,
providing direct and indirect employment (roughly 7 percent of national employment), as well as
being a valuable source of government revenue. The main topics covered in this discussion paper
are: global significance of Pacific Island tuna, the value of tuna to the region, employment, exports
and benefits, and fishery–related industries.
Global Significance:
In recent years, the annual global supply of tuna (albacore, bigeye, skipjack, and yellowfin) has
averaged roughly 3.6 million metric tons (Joseph, 2000), with the Pacific Islands contributing
1million metric tons, nearly a third of global supply. Additionally, the Pacific Island nations supply
60 percent of canned tuna, and 30 percent of tuna bound for the Japanese sashimi market. In
comparison to the other three major tuna fishing areas in the Eastern Pacific, West Africa, and the
Western Indian Ocean, the contribution from the Pacific

The Impacts of Overfishing in the Pacific Ocean
Research on Overfishing in the Pacific Ocean: The demand for food across the globe continues to
increase as the human population continues to increase. For human populations, particularly people
in the poorest countries across the globe, fish is an important source of nourishment and food given
the increase in the demand for food. As a result, fisheries catches represent a huge export of energy
and mass that can no longer be utilized by trophic levels that are higher than those fished. Since
fishing has been used one of the major ways by humans to meet the ever–increasing demand for
food, it has contributed to widespread overfishing. The widespread overfishing has in turn resulted
in the decrease in the global catch of fish. Furthermore, increased overfishing has become a huge
threat to every species in the ocean and has largely contributed to the huge migrations by marine
mammals in their quest for the left over fish. While the use of fish by human beings is not wrong,
the whole eco–system in the ocean can be severely impacted when human take too much. In order to
deal with this issue effectively, it's important to examine its causes, effects, and proposed solutions.
The Trend of Overfishing across the Globe: According to the findings of research, approximately 50
percent of commercial marine species have been overfished in the past five decades (Srinivasan,
Cheung, Watson & Sumaila, p.1). The increase in fisheries catches across the globe has also been

SPECIES PROFILE for LITTLE TUNNY (Euthynnus alletteratus) prepared for MSC 276– Marine
Vertebrate Zoology by Ashley Wells alwells705@mail.cfcc.edu Submitted: April 6, 2017 Names and
Classification Euthynnus alletteratus Little Tunny Synonyms: Bone–eater, false albacore, little tuna,
mackerel tuna (English), alletterato, tonnetto (Italian), apluro, bonito–pintado (Portuguese), bonite
queue raide (French), carachana (Spanish), falscher bonito (German), thunnin (Danish), tunnin
(Norwegian). Family: Scombridae (Tuna & Mackerel) Description The little tunny, Euthynnus
alletteratus, is a common species of tuna and a popular sport fish inhabiting the Atlantic. Relatively
small in size, the little tunny may grow to be a meter in length, although they are often much
smaller. This species can weigh up to 12 kg, but, as stated with their length, tend to be much smaller
(Robins, 1986). Similar to other species of tuna, the little tunny has a fusiform body shape that
allows for efficient movement through water and they lack a swimbladder. They also possess a keel

population in the Mediterranean Sea examined the stomach contents of 187 little tunny. The study
found that the little tunny has a broad diet, including teleost fish, cephalopods, crustaceans, and
vegetation. Of said prey items, teleosts accounted for the most amount of weight and were found in
over 90% of the stomachs of all the observed specimens. A table displaying the appearance of
multiple food items in the stomachs of the observed specimens gives a breakdown of the diet of the

Bycatch Overfishing
Signs of overfishing is the decrease in number of seawards animals based on the yearly data based.
The fishing industry often responds to these signs by moving to new areas to catch, and overtime it's
might cost the same result as the initial result.
Bycatch is the situation when somebody target a specific animals to catch, but at the same time
when they try to catch this animal it also cost the death of others animal.
Ghost fishing is the lost or abandoned fishing gear that could trap and kill marine species.
Why is refined oil more hazardous to the marine environment than crude oil? Which is spilled more
often? Because refined oil has higher percentage of volatile parts that can possibly react to the things

A Summary Of Andrew Weil
Medical researchers are in wide agreement that a process called "inflammation" underlies most of
the chronic diseases of the Western world. While the inflammatory response helps the body to heal
itself and fight off infections from bacteria and viruses, when the condition is present in large
amounts over long periods of time, cancer, diabetes, heart disease, and arthritis often result. Chronic
inflammation is the body's self–protective response to environmental threats such as saturated fats,
processed foods, a sedentary lifestyle, smoking, and stress.
Andrew Weil, MD is a practitioner and educator of integrative medicine and clinical professor of
internal medicine at the Program in Integrative Medicine at the University of Arizona in Tucson. He

to educate and raise awareness about the many issues overfishing causes. Overfishing not only has
negative effects on the ecosystem in the ocean, but for man as well. This directly affects the balance
of fish in our oceans, which in return affects both you and I. If overfished we risk extinction of some
fish species, therefore causing a chain reaction that would be irreversible if action is not taken
sooner than later. For example, if we were to overfish the albacore tuna, our oceans would become
over populated with their main food supply

Is Prenatal Care Important?
Is prenatal care important?
Prenatal care is very important. To help make sure you and your baby will be as healthy as possible,
follow some simple guidelines and check in regularly with your doctor.
What will happen during prenatal visits?
After you find out you are pregnant, you should make an appointment with your doctor. Your doctor
will probably start by talking to you about your medical history and how you have been feeling. You
will be weighed and have your blood pressure taken. These measurements will most likely be taken
during each doctor's visit.
On your first visit, you may also have a pelvic exam to check the size and shape of your uterus
(womb) and a Pap smear to screen for cervical cancer if you are due for a cervical cancer screening.
Urine and blood test ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
If you do take a prenatal supplement, make sure you're not taking any other vitamin or mineral
supplement along with it unless your doctor recommends it.
Is it okay to take medicine?
Check with your doctor before taking any medicine, including pain relievers or other over–the–
counter medicines. Even medicine you can buy without a prescription may cause birth defects,
especially if it's taken during the first 3 months of pregnancy.
How long can I keep working?
This depends on whether you have any problems with your pregnancy, what kind of work you do
and if you're exposed to anything at work that could harm your baby. For instance, radiation, lead
and other heavy metals (such as copper and mercury), could be damaging to the baby. However,
working in front of a computer screen is not thought to cause harm to an unborn baby. Talk with
your doctor about your work environment.
What about exercise?
Unless you have problems in your pregnancy, you should get regular exercise. Exercise can help
ease discomfort during pregnancy. Try to get at least 30 minutes of exercise each day. Talk to your
doctor about any special conditions that you may

Respecting The Environment In Ernest Hemingway's The Old...
Ernest Hemingway once said, "The world is a fine place and worth the fighting for and I hate very
much to leave it." This quote is a fine demonstration of Hemingway's respect for nature and the
environment, which perfectly links to a lasting theme in his book, The Old Man and the Sea.
Santiago's journey on the sea is one of misfortune and survival, but in the end it's the environment
around him that helps him reach his home once again. While some may say that The Old Man and
the Sea is more of a cautionary tale of how nature can have negative impacts on a person's life, it is
imperative to recognize that the story is more about residing within and accepting the changes in the
environment rather than being punished by it. The theme of understanding and respecting the
environment in The Old Man and The Sea is supported by factors such as Santiago's interactions
with the marlin, his respect for the sea, and his survival throughout the book.
The first element in the theme of understanding and respecting the environment is Santiago's
interaction with the marlin. While it's arguable that the marlin's actions portray nature as more of an
enemy, taking Santiago far from his home and being the cause of all of his troubles throughout the
story, nonetheless, in the end the marlin is more respected and understood by Santiago than he is
hated. Santiago's admiration and love for the marlin in shown in several different locations
throughout the story. While the old man is close to killing

Analysis Of The Movie ' Chinatown ' And ' Oedipus '
Chinatown, directed by Roman Polanski, is a thriller, detective fiction and film noir. Back story
plays an important role within Chinatown as it allows the audience to be exposed to the greed and
corruption within the plot through a slow reveal. Characteristic of a detective fiction is the slow
release of information allowing for the audience to understand the crime and its' motives at the same
pace as the detective. The backstory behind Chinatown builds tension within the story as it clearly
foreshadows what is to happen within the film. There is a great amount of symbolism and parallels
within Chinatown which creates a cyclic narrative to the plot. Another set of parallel is between the
narrative of Chinatown and Oedipus. By examining these two plots it can be noted how the slow
reveal of backstory results in a strong climax. Evelyn's back story is withheld earlier in the plot.
When Evelyn's backstory of the incestuous relationship between herself and Noah Cross, her father,
it creates a climactic point in drama as it shows the greed and corruption. To add to this theme of
greed, when it is revealed that Noah Cross is behind the murder of Hollis Mulwray. The
combination of monetary greed and Cross's greed for his children makes it a more sinister crime. By
having Hollis and Evelyn killed it shows how the innocent as well as the righteous have no justice as
Chinatown is a corrupt place. The backstory of Jake Gittes in Chinatown ignites storytelling through
provoking

Driftnet Fishing
From the beginning of human existence to present day, humans have required food for survival.
Over the years, the methods of getting food have multiplied extensively, been facilitated, and have
become more efficient. Fishing is a technique that has been used throughout the course of history
and is still used today. There are several different ways to fish, such as individual fishing and
commercial fishing. Many of the commercial fishing techniques are similar, using large nets or
traps, targeting a certain type of marine life that is in high demand. Unfortunately, these forms of
fishing can be dangerous to people and to the wildlife. Driftnet fishing is a technique of commercial
fishing that started out prosperous and effective, however, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Driftnet fishing is illegal in some places, but is still done for the large amount of fish it provides. In
some countries where fish make up a large part of the populations diet, people are still allowed to
driftnet fish. In recognition of Japan's traditional reliance on salmon fishing, the International North
Pacific Fisheries Commission (INPFC) reduced and restricted the areas that Japanese salmon
driftnet vessels could fish gradually (History of Driftnet Fisheries in Operation 6). Other countries
are not so fortunate, but the damage being done to the populations of fish could result in the
extinction of the species. Ireland also has an inshore salmon driftnet fleet that fishes illegally and
threatens the existence of the salmon stocks in both Ireland and Scotland (History of Driftnet
Fisheries in Operation 9). Bans and laws against driftnet fishing can hurt populations of people
because of their dependence on fishing, but if the populations of fish are wiped out because of
driftnet fishing, it will harm humans more than the laws. The most important aspect of driftnet
fishing is the net. The net is the object that catches everything in its path. The characteristics of the
driftnets vary in different regions, but most nets are made of synthetic materials that will hold up
against the ocean. Driftnets will often be attached together to make larger panels. Made from almost

requiring the hospital to hire more employees who speak the Spanish language due to the increase in
Spanish–speaking patients. If the hospital fails to meet this 30 percent increase in bilingual
employees than Hospital Bass would receive a 50 percent cut in government reimbursements, which
would create a major obstacle. Therefore, in order to solve the problems, the administration has to
take a lot into consideration. The major dilemma is whether or not they should follow the
government's order. In other words, would the 50 percent cut in reimbursements be

Nuclear Power Disasters : Fukushima Daiichi
Nuclear Power Disasters: Fukushima Daiichi
Fukushima Daiichi joins the ranks of nuclear disasters that include Chernobyl (1989) and Three
Mile Island (1979). Fukushima Daiini, sat alongside Daiichi, and was not damaged during the
earthquake or tsunami. It is still operable.
Worldwide, there are 439 (GW 377) and 69 (GW 66) nuclear power plants–although not all are in
operation, at this time. Nuclear power plants are either nuclear fusion, nuclear fission, or power that
is derived from nuclear decay. Many of these plants have been in operation since the late 60s and
early 70s and have not created any disasters or near disasters. Nuclear power, for what it's worth, is
considered clean, renewable, and safe energy.
Japanese Earthquake and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
To ensure backup power, nuclear power plants have generators to keep water circulating and cooling
the fuel rods. There were 13 generators on–site and only one of those was undamaged by the
tsunami. The generators for Fukushima Daiichi were installed on the ocean side of the plant, as well.
What happened, and what created the disaster was the failure of the generators to come into play.
The first of the Daiichi power units exploded within 17 to 24 hours of the initial event. Without the
ability to pump water over the fuel rods, the rods continue to heat until they reach unsustainability
and the plant exploded. Three employees were killed as a result of the earthquake and tsunami and
hundreds more have worked diligently to remove and cleanup the affected buildings. Thus far, none
of those employees have died.
Studies performed in the 1960s showed that the sea level, at which the Fukushima plants were
designed and built, was acceptable for tsunami conditions. At the time the studies were done, a
tsunami and earthquake of such a magnitude as that which hit northeastern Japan was unknown and
newer studies–done since 2011–have altered the original findings.
In truth, the 13 generators located ocean–side should not have been installed in that location, as the
surviving plant Daiini's generators were located on the opposite side–on land–and that plant
survived with only minimal structural

Characteristics Of Bluefin Tuna
There are many interesting species of ocean fish. Possibly one of the most economically important,
diverse, and interesting species is the tuna. Different species in general have different physical
characteristics and appetite. However, across the different species, there are similar migration
patterns and fishing techniques. There are five primary kinds of tuna: Bluefin, Yellowfin, Long Tail,
Albacore, and Big Eye.
While some characteristics are similar among the different species of tuna, in general each species is
distinct. The Bluefin tuna, Thunnus thynnus, is the biggest of the species. They can reach
astonishing sizes and average "...up to 1500 pounds and...6–10 feet long." (World Wildlife Fund 1)
The Bluefin tuna are built like torpedoes. With traits like retractable fins and eyes that are set flush
to their body, they were made for speed. They have the longest life span, living up to forty years.
The next largest is the Big Eye tuna, Thunnus obesus. They are long and streamlined. They have a
distinct coloration to protect thenselves from predators. In order to avoid predators from above, they
have dark metallic blue on their backs and upper sides. Likewise, to avoid predators from below,
they are nearly white on their lower sides and belly. Their two sided coloration allows for then to
blend in the with their background waters. While smaller than the Bluefin, they can still reach an
enormous size. They can weigh up to 460 pounds and they have an average length of

Mr. Browns Dilemma
Good Morning Mr. Brown, my name is Mona and I am a physician's assistant. Thank you for
coming in to meet with me today. Today I'll be going over your recent lab work along with the
results. The last time you were in to see the doctor he ordered testing for you that is known as a lipid
panel or a cholesterol panel. A lipid panel is done to measure four main things which are your
cholesterol, triglycerides, HDL, and LDL
I will now tell you a little about your results and explain what your results mean for your health. You
may feel free to ask any questions to gain clarification of anything that you may not understand.
First I will discuss your Triglyceride level results, I want to explain to you exactly what triglycerides
are before giving you your personal result. Triglycerides are a type of fat (lipid) found in your blood.
Whenever you eat something your body automatically turns any calories it feels is unnecessary for
you to have into triglycerides.
The triglycerides are then stored in your fat cells, and later on the hormones in your body will set
free triglycerides to be used as energy for you in between your meals. Your triglyceride level result
is 145 mg/dl which is good. A normal triglyceride level is considered to be Less than 150 milligrams
per deciliter (mg/dL). Both Triglycerides and cholesterol are separate types

Basic Facts About Sharks
The two groups of organisms that I choose that live in the same habitat were a shark and a tuna.
Sharks live in oceans and seas while only a few live in freshwater. They are usually found in
shallow, coastal regions, deep waters, on the ocean floor and in the open ocean ("Basic Facts About
Sharks", 2012). Tunas live in saltwater or marine habitats that include the Atlantic Ocean, Pacific
Ocean, and Indian Ocean ("Albacore Tuna", 2011). They both have similar and different adaptations
when it comes surviving in the oceans. The first similar adaptation between a shark and tuna is
camouflage. Organisms use their coloration to camouflage within their surrounds to protect from
predators. Coloration may vary among sharks. Usually, the ventral side is pale (white, cream) while
the dorsal side is dark (blue, gray, and brown) (Woods, "Unique Adaptations That Sharks Have to
Survive"). They have a color pattern known as "countershading." Their pale bellies blend in with the
sky when viewed from the bottom of the ocean. The dark color blends in with the dark water when
viewed from the top. Tunas also share the same color pattern as sharks. On the ventral side, they

They gulp air into their duct in order to fill it. When they gulp for air, the air goes through the gut

them with the ability to stay at a specific depth (Ramel, "Fish anatomy: The Swim Bladder"). If they

There is increased risk of mercury exposure in the dental, health and chemical industries. People are
also at risk of consuming an unsafe amount of mercury if they eat certain things in excess amounts,
such as more than 6 ounces of albacore tuna per week, or over 12 ounces of fish like shrimp, canned

Conclusion The impacts of mercury pollution on the Earth are huge. It starts by affecting wildlife
and fish and then those things are consumed by humans. There is severe brain damage that is
occurring and drastically affecting society's general IQ and earning power. The progression of
society in some cultures is being halted because of this pollution. There have been a lot of
governmental meetings regarding the subject, but little has changed. It seems as if there needs to be
a great deal more of legislation regarding the matter.

Dna Barcoding And Its Effects On The Malaysian Market
There is very little customers can do to ensure that they are purchasing the fish they are paying for.
Producers and restaurants owners have a tendency to mislabel their products for their own reasons.
The main reason is yet to be determined but there are researchers who have made it their goal to
resolve this dispute and show customers what they are truly buying. Too Chin Chin et al. attempt to
utilize the DNA barcoding in the fish segment, to assess the frequency of fish mislabeling on the
Malaysian market (2015). DNA barcoding tries to standardize scientific classification by using
short, single DNA sequence, for example, part of the mitochondrial gene COI to distinguish between
species (Larson, 2007). The process begins with extracting DNA and using primers to amplify COI
regions from the DNA extracts via PCR. The sequences attained are compared to the available
sequences in Bold and GenBank databases to find the mislabeled products. Similarly, a character–
based key can also be constructed to review the reference sequences for variable nucleotides that
can serve as diagnostics for the species you wish to study (Loweinstein, 2009). Along with Too Chin
Chin et al., there are other researchers who based their study on the same concept to find mislabeled
seafood products in certain parts of the world. Dana Miller et al. examined seafood fraud in two
types of Whitefish in Europe. Although, the motivation for these works are to find mislabeling in
products using the standard

energy on the cell phones and insulations in their homes. Nuclear power, the second environmental
issue, nuclear power provides 35% of electricity and we all remember the earthquake that destroyed
half of them that was a big issue. Fishing and Whaling, the third environmental issue, is about the

The Kashiwazaki–Kariwa Nuclear Power Plant was completely shut down for 21 months following
an earthquake in 2007. The 2011 earthquake and tsunami caused the failure of cooling systems at
the Fukushima I Nuclear Power Plant on March 11 and a nuclear emergency was declared. This was
the first time a nuclear emergency had been declared in Japan, and 140,000 residents within 20 km
of the plant were evacuated. The total amount of radioactive material released is unclear, as the
crisis is on going. On 6 May 2011, Prime Minister ordered the Hamaoka Nuclear Power Plant be
shut down, as an earthquake of magnitude 8.0 or higher is likely to hit the area within the next 30
years.
Fishing and Whaling, the third environmental issue, is about the food the fish way too much, and
there is less fish and whales in their water for them to keep doing it. In the Japanese diets, fish and
its products are more prominent than other types of meat. Because of the depletion of ocean stocks

The Economic Significance Of Pacific Island Tuna

nations in the Southwest Pacific, including the Cook Islands, the Federated States of Micronesia,

and Vanuatu. Due to the limited number of exploitable resources available to these island nations,
tuna is an essential renewable resource, and, represents a multi–billion dollar–a–year global industry

In short, the Pacific Islands are effectively the epicenter of tuna fishing globally.
Regional Value of Tuna Catch:
In the Pacific Islands region, the annual catch volume and volume per catch have increased over the
last thirty years (figure 2). Despite some annual variation, the catch volume has increased roughly
ten–fold from 1970 to 1999. Additionally, the value has increased dramatically from approximately
USD375 million in 1982 (Clark 1983), to USD1.2 billion in 1993 (World Bank 1995), to USD1.7
billion in 1995 (FFA 1996), and to USD1.9 billion in 1998 (Van Santen and Muller 2000). These
figures clearly indicate the importance of tuna fishing to the Pacific Islands' economies, with the
current annual tuna harvest valued at USD1.9 billion. The countries and regions within the Pacific
Islands have a combined GDP of USD17 billion (SPC 1998b), thus the annual tuna harvest
represents roughly 11 percent of the region's GDP.
Employment:
Much like the Energy sector in Canada, the tuna fishing industry is a massive employer in the
Pacific Islands. With a lack of formal jobs in the region, the importance of tuna–related employment
drastically increases. The areas of employment that tuna fishing generates includes: direct
employment on a fishing vessel, which is extremely labor–intensive, and employment connected to
the tuna industry, including indirect spinoff

Oceans: The Importance of Preserving this Delicate Marine...
The Oceans are the most diverse biomes in the world, for they cover 71% of the planet. Life in the
ocean evolved 3 billion years prior than land, and it still has over ¾ of all the habitats on Earth.
Humans have always posed threats to the delicate marine environment, yet it still is thriving.
Without the marine biome humans and other animals alike would not be in existence, for evolution
of the first life would never have occurred, and we would not have a strong enough atmosphere to
support life. The geography of the ocean varies greatly all the way from the deep Abyssal Plain, to
the shallow waters of Coral Reefs. The Ocean is divided into four different zones/sub zones, the

These sources are beneficial to humans because, it allows us to live our lives the way we do.
Minerals and fuel allow us to construct new architecture, the food and water allow us to survive, and
the Ocean allows us to trade with other countries easily, which in return promotes a good economy.
The Ocean is beneficial to all life on Earth because, it creates a water cycle which allows all animals
to survive , for all living organisms need water, and without water there would not be life on Earth
now. Humans are working to conserve the ocean by cleaning up oil spills, releasing trapped animals,
and cleaning up trash along the shore of the ocean, and even near tributaries which lead into the
Ocean. Humans try to conserve the Ocean, although the problems we are working on are caused by
us. For example, the BP oil spill occurred in April, and we are still trying to fix the leak, and we still
are trying to clean the shores, but we caused these problems ourselves, and it wasn't the Ocean. Our
trash washes up on shores and we clean it up in order for the animals to live safely and not get
trapped. There are also many more problems which we try to constantly solve. The ocean has many
relationships between various animals, but one of the symbiotic relationships in the ocean is
commensalism between the clown fish and sea anemones. In this relationship, the clown

Chinatown: Above The Film Noir Genre Essay
The viewer sees a private eye and beautiful client. First thought, "It's definitely another Hollywood

beautiful but dangerous woman, otherwise known as the femme fatale, a gritty urban setting,
compositional tension (highly contrasting light and dark colors or oblique camera angles), and
themes of moral ambiguity and alienation. Chinatown, however, is different. Polanski shot
Chinatown with color film, and though his colors do appear especially vivid, color film precludes
the contrast intensity that black and white film offers. In addition, Evelyn is not the classic femme

It shows how Jake is persistent and dedicated to his job, even if it always seems like he is in over his
head. Jake, however, also departs from the film noir tradition when he lets his emotions get the best
of him. The greatest example of this is seen during the exchange between him and Evelyn when he
is trying to find out the truth about Katherine. Resorting for the first time to violence against a
woman, the near desperation with which Jake pushes Evelyn to confess is an expression of his fears
and anxieties about being completely lost amidst the lies that surround him. The result is the
humanization of Jake Giddes' character. He simply is not perfect, and ultimately fails to see the

While classic film noir is characterized by high compositional tension, or low lit black and white
cinematography, Polanski managed to infuse Chinatown with that sense of corruption and nihilism
so prevalent in noir in bright Southern California despite employing a photographic element
previously thought antithetical to film noir style: color film stock. The dominant colors of
Chinatown are brown, gray, and black, which can be seen as an indication of the film's allusion to
the noir tradition of black–and–white. The various hues of brown and gold can be seen throughout
the film, from clothing to homes

Should the Risks of Fish Intake Override the Benefits? Essay
Many consumers today are confused about the controversy about fish and its health effects.
Researchers have discovered that fish contains methyl mercury, polychlorinated biphenyls (PCB),
and dioxins that may put one's health at risk ("Harvard College"). The industrial processes cause
mercury to be released into the air, then the chemical ends up in the lakes. Therefore, the
contaminants come from bacteria that live in lakes that are then absorbed in species. When people
consume fish, they are also taking in bacteria that came from unspecialized lakes indirectly through
fish consumption. Although people could be harmed by eating contaminated fish, a diet that includes
fish can also benefit the body. Fish has become especially popular ... Show more content on

It is a very rare case where people get diagnosed with a significantly high consumption of mercury
that leads to severe conditions: death. The main reason that death occurs in this situation is because
the large amounts of fish that people are consuming, meaning eating fish consistently on a daily
basis. Nevertheless, people should still be aware of the types of fish they eat that are high or low in
mercury concentration. Despite the beneficial health that fish provides, one also needs to be aware
of the appropriate amount of fish to take that will not lead to adverse health effects. Fish an
important source of protein that contains omega–3 fats that is essential and healthful for the human
heart. One of the most known evidence of the effects that omega–3 brings is the prevention of heart
disease ("Harvard School"). In one study, "the participants with the highest mercury exposure
appeared to be at slightly less risk of heart attack and stroke than those with the lowest exposure, a
trend that is probably due to the benefits of fish consumption rather than the mercury itself, the
researchers say" (Gardner). The intake of omega–3 into the body helps to support the heart because
fish barely contains any saturated fats. Therefore, fish is healthier compared to other poultry and
preserved meat products. For instance, every time people go on a diet, they normally eat fish,

Hospital Services Case
The General Assembly of the State of Albacore is considering implementing a new bill that could
potentially affect the overall workflow at Hospital Bass. The bill will order that at least 30 percent of
a hospital's workforce has to speak Spanish, which includes all hospitals within the state of
Albacore. The unfortunate part is that any healthcare facility that does not follow this law will only
receive 50 percent of Medicare reimbursements compared to the 80 percent they are now receiving.
The issue with this bill for Hospital Bass is that currently only 15 percent of the workforce speaks
Spanish, meaning the facility would need to hire twice as many employees once the bill is initiated.

Their reasoning is the fact that our hospital cannot afford to hire more employees who speak
Spanish. The budget would not be able to handle this and individuals not unionized could potentially
lose their job due to the influx of employees who are needed to speak Spanish. Therefore, cuts have
to be made somewhere in order to survive the precautions of the new bill that would pass. The
potential conflicts the stakeholders have is not obeying the new bill or opposing the bill, which
would cause a great decrease of federal reimbursement through government insurance, especially
when two thirds of your patients have this insurance. Therefore, opposing the bill or not obeying it
could have a dramatic effect on Hospital Bass and that is where the contractor comes into play to
offer recommendations that will benefit the hospital in the greatest way. A few brief
recommendations to help with the current issue would be to offer a better benefit package for our
current and future employees, implement quality surveys to all patients in order to give us adequate
feedback, and to provide the largest numbers of Spanish speaking employees in the Emergency
department because of the high percentage of patients who speak the language. With these potential
solutions in place, our organization would be ready to handle any type of bill passed by the General

The Problem of Overfishing
One of the growing issues that has been plaguing our marine habitats is the problem of overfishing.
What this means is that we are taking fish from the ocean, at rates that are far higher than the fish
can replenish themselves, which is a problem because fish and other marine organisms are very
important for millions of people around the world. They are relied on because sometimes it is the
only way to have access to a good source of proteins and fatty acids throughout the day. The key for
sustainable management revolves around the idea of the economics of the catch. What this means is
that we can maximize the fish that we obtain from the oceans while still allowing them to replenish
year after year. The way that it works is that fish have a different growth rate depending on where
they lie in regards to their carrying capacity. When they are at their carrying capacity they have a
very low growth rate so this would be an ideal time to catch fish. The other ideal time to catch fish is
when they are at half of their carrying capacity because this is when they have the highest growth
rate. If this was done, fisheries would be able to catch the same number of individuals as the fish
produced that year, while the population remained at half the carrying capacity. One way that we
limit how many fish can be caught is by imposing quotas and monitoring catch numbers. There are
two problems with how it works now. The first is that in reality the fish populations are

The Old Man And The Sea Character Analysis
In The Old Man and the Sea by Ernest Hemingway, the reader is introduced to the plight of
Santiago, a very old fisherman who has gone eighty–four days without catching anything. Santiago
believes that he will catch a giant fish on his eighty–fifth day of this streak, and gain back his luck.
He does catch a fish of over a thousand pounds while at sea over the course of a few days. However,
his luck doesn't last and the giant fish is devoured by hungry sharks while Santiago is on his way
back home. This gives readers mixed feelings over Santiago was a winner or a loser at the end of the
book, all things considered. Although Santiago was very unsuccessful throughout the story, he was
ultimately victorious because he broke his eighty–four day streak of catching nothing, he survived
against all odds, and even though it had been ruined, he brought home the biggest fish the town had
ever seen. In the past, Santiago was revered as a great fisherman, a local legend. He knew many
tricks, and was very patient and strong–willed. Once his unlucky streak started up, however, his
reputation was more or less thrown to the wolves. Hemingway even says on Page 11 that many of
the other fishermen made fun of Santiago, and on Page 9 that it had been 84 days since he had
caught anything ("He was an old man who fished alone in a skiff in the Gulf Stream and he had
gone eighty–four days now without taking a fish."). Less than halfway into that stretch Manolin's

Insulin is needed to move blood sugar (glucose) into cells, where it is stored and later used for
energy. In pt. with diabetes, these cells produce little or no insulin. Without enough insulin, glucose
builds up in the bloodstream instead of going into the cells. The body is unable to use this glucose
for energy. This leads to an increase in Blood ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Sweets often have fewer vitamins and minerals than more healthful foods. Some fat in the diet is
essential, but it's best to go for the "healthy" unsaturated fats found in nuts, vegetable oils, olives,
and avocados. Non–fried fish such as salmon, mackerel, and albacore tuna is another good source, It
contains healthy omega–3 fat. Experts recommend that less than 7% of your total calorie intake
should come from saturated fats. They are found in full–fat dairy products such as ice cream, sour
cream, and cheese, as well as meats, chicken skin, and bacon. Trans fats are present in margarine,
shortening, and many processed packaged goods such as crackers and chips. People with diabetes
generally should try to get the same amount of protein in their diet as those in the general
population, which is 15% to 20% of total calories. High–protein diets have been in the news a lot
lately. But there's no evidence they result in weight loss in the long term for people with diabetes or
anyone else. Also, the long–term effects of a high–protein diet on kidney function in people with
diabetes is Alcohol is a source of extra calories with few nutrients. If adults with diabetes choose to
drink alcohol, daily intake should be moderate. Moderate means 1 drink per day or less for women
and 2 drinks per day or less for men. OPPS! You can try a simple strategy for healthy nutrition from
the ADA called "Create Your Plate." This will help you figure out which foods to eat and how much.

Critical Appreciation Of The Old Man And The Sea
"The Old Man and the Sea" is a striking yet frustrating novel about an elderly Cuban fisherman and
his struggles with unluckiness. His supposed misfortune is depicted through the loss of a
relationship, the loss of his sanity, and the loss of the largest fish he had ever caught. Written by
Ernest Hemingway in 1952 then awarded the Pulitzer prize in 1953, "The Old Man and the Sea"
became a fascinating work of literary art that portrays a pessimistic story of defeat.
Within the first few sentences of chapter one, the Cuban fisherman, named Santiago is clearly
struggling with his profession, and had gone eighty–four days without catching a single fish. Also
observed in chapter one, was the presence of a young boy that had befriended the aged fisherman.
Sadly, the boy had been commanded by his father to leave Santiago and board a "lucky" boat, due to
forty days of misfortune with the old man. Santiago loved the boy, and did not want to him abandon
their fishing trips together, but he respected the boy's father. The young lad was not in favor of the
separation either, but obeyed his father's wishes by casting his lines out with another boat. When
time allowed, the boy still checked in with his friend to keep him company. Throughout the book,
the old man is almost constantly thinking about the boy, or how situations would be better if the boy
were present. The loss of the boy represents Santiago's first misfortune, the loss of a relationship.
On the eighty–fifth day of

Benefits of Omega-3s for Brain, Heart Health

  • 1. Benefits of Omega-3 Fatty Acids Essay More and more research studies are finding that getting enough Omega–3 fatty acids is critical to our health in many ways. Omega–3 fats are essential for the survival of the human body, but our bodies can't manufacture them on their own, so we need to get them from the foods we eat. Good dietary sources of Omega–3 fatty acids are fish and seafood, like salmon, tuna, sardines, halibut, herring, algae and krill, plus some plants and nut oils such as flaxseeds and flaxseed oil, canola oil, soybeans and soybean oil, pumpkin seeds and pumpkin seed oil, purslane, perilla seed oil, and walnuts and walnut oil. Also known as polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs), Omega–3s play a critical role in brain function and in normal growth and development. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This diet includes very little meat, which is high in omega–6 fatty acids, and includes foods rich in Omega–3s such as whole grains, fresh fruits and vegetables, fish, olive oil, and garlic, and drinking wine in moderation. Numerous studies have shown that those who follow this type of diet are less prone to develop heart disease. Omega–3s may also be beneficial for: High cholesterol Those on a Mediterranean–style diet are prone to have higher HDL, or "good" cholesterol levels, which help support heart health. Inuit Eskimos, who get plenty of Omega–3s from eating fatty fish, also tend to have increased HDL cholesterol and decreased triglycerides, or fats in the blood. Research studies have shown that fish oil supplements reduce triglyceride levels. Finally, walnuts (that contain high levels of alpha linolenic acid, or ALA, which is type of Omega–3 fatty acid) have been reported to lower total cholesterol and triglycerides in people who have high cholesterol levels. High blood pressure Studies have shown that people with hypertension were able to lower their blood pressure by consuming diets high in Omega–3 fatty acids or taking fish oil supplements. After analyzing the results of 17 clinical studies using fish oil supplements, researchers determined that taking 3 or more grams of fish oil per day may lower blood pressure in people with untreated hypertension. Coal burning is the human activity that is most greatly contributing to increased mercury levels. 34. See attached 35. Mercury wet deposition levels are highest in Florida, Illinois, Missouri, and Arkansas. This is most probably due to these states having many coal–burning power plants. 36. Largemouth bass and spotted bass exceed this limit. 37. Largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, rock bass, spotted bass, pumpkinseed, rainbow–cutthroat trout, and brown trout exceed this limit. This mercury level is most probably lower than the level for humans because humans are larger than many of the piscivorous mammals and are able to resist more mercury. In addition, these mammals consume fish in much higher quantities. 38. Yes, on average the largemouth bass has a mercury level of about 0.45 ug/g, which is higher than the recommended amount for humans. 39. The mercury concentrations were highest in sediment because while rain can distribute the mercury and "dilute" it to some degree, the mercury that falls to the ground in sediment is deposited in high concentrations, with little dilution. 40. Quotes 'The Ocean Can Be So Cruel' Neil Lagrana Summer project August 5, 2014 Language Arts Explain the quote " the ocean can be so cruel" The ocean does not care who you are, how old you are, what you like to eat or how good you are at chess. Out there in the ocean, everyone is treated the same. Now normally people wouldnt care, but if you are a fishermen or perhaps someone in a cruise ship, I would think that you would care what the ocean thinks otherwise the ocean might send a big wave towards you and possibly send your and your boat down into the ocean. Now unless, you are a surfer i doubt you might enjoy that, especially, if you are Santiago, an old fisherman who has gone 84 straight days without a haul. And so, the ocean can be considered cruel. As it gifts an old man nothing. But the ocean is incapable of sympathy, it and the creatures living in it are a force of nature. Santiago states it himself skill and luck is needed to survive. He has become the laughingstock of his town, and as a fisherman, you live and die by the trade. At the start of his 85th day santiago ventured out into the sea with determination. He had to repay his debts to the store owner for the food and to prove his skill to the town. Also to show that manolin's efforts to feed ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The scent of blood from the marlin attracted a mako shark and it took a bite of a free meal before it was chased away. But other schools of shark came, and were too many for one weary, cramping old man. If only he had the boy with him. The Economic Significance Of Pacific Island Tuna This paper discusses the economic significance of tuna fishing, and related industries to island nations in the Southwest Pacific, including the Cook Islands, the Federated States of Micronesia, Kiribati, Marshall, Nauru, Niue, Palau, Papa New Guinea, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Tonga, Tuvalu, and Vanuatu. Due to the limited number of exploitable resources available to these island nations, tuna is an essential renewable resource, and, represents a multi–billion dollar–a–year global industry for these communities. The Pacific Islands contribute a third of the world's annual tuna supply, providing direct and indirect employment (roughly 7 percent of national employment), as well as being a valuable source of government revenue. The main topics covered in this discussion paper are: global significance of Pacific Island tuna, the value of tuna to the region, employment, exports and benefits, and fishery–related industries. Global Significance: In recent years, the annual global supply of tuna (albacore, bigeye, skipjack, and yellowfin) has averaged roughly 3.6 million metric tons (Joseph, 2000), with the Pacific Islands contributing 1million metric tons, nearly a third of global supply. Additionally, the Pacific Island nations supply 60 percent of canned tuna, and 30 percent of tuna bound for the Japanese sashimi market. • 12. The Impacts of Overfishing in the Pacific Ocean Research on Overfishing in the Pacific Ocean: The demand for food across the globe continues to increase as the human population continues to increase. For human populations, particularly people in the poorest countries across the globe, fish is an important source of nourishment and food given the increase in the demand for food. As a result, fisheries catches represent a huge export of energy and mass that can no longer be utilized by trophic levels that are higher than those fished. Since fishing has been used one of the major ways by humans to meet the ever–increasing demand for food, it has contributed to widespread overfishing. The widespread overfishing has in turn resulted in the decrease in the global catch of fish. Furthermore, increased overfishing has become a huge threat to every species in the ocean and has largely contributed to the huge migrations by marine mammals in their quest for the left over fish. While the use of fish by human beings is not wrong, the whole eco–system in the ocean can be severely impacted when human take too much. In order to deal with this issue effectively, it's important to examine its causes, effects, and proposed solutions. The Trend of Overfishing across the Globe: According to the findings of research, approximately 50 percent of commercial marine species have been overfished in the past five decades (Srinivasan, Cheung, Watson & Sumaila, p.1). Later on in the day I had gone fishing with my step daddy down by the river. It was his idea, so I agreed to go having figured it was better than being grounded to the house. I had ended up catching three brook trout while my step daddy only caught two. The Issue Of Overfishing The article I have chosen to write about is untitled but depicts the issues behind overfishing, written by Bill Fox, VP of Fisheries and can be viewed at worldwildlife.org/threats/overfishing. Its focus is to educate and raise awareness about the many issues overfishing causes. Overfishing not only has negative effects on the ecosystem in the ocean, but for man as well. This directly affects the balance of fish in our oceans, which in return affects both you and I. If overfished we risk extinction of some fish species, therefore causing a chain reaction that would be irreversible if action is not taken sooner than later. This quote is a fine demonstration of Hemingway's respect for nature and the environment, which perfectly links to a lasting theme in his book, The Old Man and the Sea. Santiago's journey on the sea is one of misfortune and survival, but in the end it's the environment around him that helps him reach his home once again. While some may say that The Old Man and the Sea is more of a cautionary tale of how nature can have negative impacts on a person's life, it is imperative to recognize that the story is more about residing within and accepting the changes in the environment rather than being punished by it. The theme of understanding and respecting the environment in The Old Man and The Sea is supported by factors such as Santiago's interactions with the marlin, his respect for the sea, and his survival throughout the book. The first element in the theme of understanding and respecting the environment is Santiago's interaction with the marlin. While it's arguable that the marlin's actions portray nature as more of an enemy, taking Santiago far from his home and being the cause of all of his troubles throughout the story, nonetheless, in the end the marlin is more respected and understood by Santiago than he is hated. Back story plays an important role within Chinatown as it allows the audience to be exposed to the greed and corruption within the plot through a slow reveal. Characteristic of a detective fiction is the slow release of information allowing for the audience to understand the crime and its' motives at the same pace as the detective. The backstory behind Chinatown builds tension within the story as it clearly foreshadows what is to happen within the film. There is a great amount of symbolism and parallels within Chinatown which creates a cyclic narrative to the plot. Another set of parallel is between the narrative of Chinatown and Oedipus. By examining these two plots it can be noted how the slow reveal of backstory results in a strong climax. Evelyn's back story is withheld earlier in the plot. When Evelyn's backstory of the incestuous relationship between herself and Noah Cross, her father, it creates a climactic point in drama as it shows the greed and corruption. To add to this theme of greed, when it is revealed that Noah Cross is behind the murder of Hollis Mulwray. The combination of monetary greed and Cross's greed for his children makes it a more sinister crime. By having Hollis and Evelyn killed it shows how the innocent as well as the righteous have no justice as Chinatown is a corrupt place. Over the years, the methods of getting food have multiplied extensively, been facilitated, and have become more efficient. Many of the commercial fishing techniques are similar, using large nets or traps, targeting a certain type of marine life that is in high demand. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Driftnet fishing is illegal in some places, but is still done for the large amount of fish it provides. In some countries where fish make up a large part of the populations diet, people are still allowed to driftnet fish. In recognition of Japan's traditional reliance on salmon fishing, the International North Pacific Fisheries Commission (INPFC) reduced and restricted the areas that Japanese salmon driftnet vessels could fish gradually (History of Driftnet Fisheries in Operation 6). Other countries are not so fortunate, but the damage being done to the populations of fish could result in the extinction of the species. Ireland also has an inshore salmon driftnet fleet that fishes illegally and threatens the existence of the salmon stocks in both Ireland and Scotland (History of Driftnet Fisheries in Operation 9). Bans and laws against driftnet fishing can hurt populations of people because of their dependence on fishing, but if the populations of fish are wiped out because of driftnet fishing, it will harm humans more than the laws. The most important aspect of driftnet fishing is the net. The net is the object that catches everything in its path. The generators for Fukushima Daiichi were installed on the ocean side of the plant, as well. What happened, and what created the disaster was the failure of the generators to come into play. The first of the Daiichi power units exploded within 17 to 24 hours of the initial event. Without the ability to pump water over the fuel rods, the rods continue to heat until they reach unsustainability and the plant exploded. They are usually found in shallow, coastal regions, deep waters, on the ocean floor and in the open ocean ("Basic Facts About Sharks", 2012). Tunas live in saltwater or marine habitats that include the Atlantic Ocean, Pacific Ocean, and Indian Ocean ("Albacore Tuna", 2011). They both have similar and different adaptations when it comes surviving in the oceans. The first similar adaptation between a shark and tuna is camouflage. Organisms use their coloration to camouflage within their surrounds to protect from predators. Coloration may vary among sharks. Usually, the ventral side is pale (white, cream) while the dorsal side is dark (blue, gray, and brown) (Woods, "Unique Adaptations That Sharks Have to Survive"). They have a color pattern known as "countershading." Their pale bellies blend in with the sky when viewed from the bottom of the ocean. • 56. Dna Barcoding And Its Effects On The Malaysian Market There is very little customers can do to ensure that they are purchasing the fish they are paying for. Producers and restaurants owners have a tendency to mislabel their products for their own reasons. The main reason is yet to be determined but there are researchers who have made it their goal to resolve this dispute and show customers what they are truly buying. Too Chin Chin et al. attempt to utilize the DNA barcoding in the fish segment, to assess the frequency of fish mislabeling on the Malaysian market (2015). DNA barcoding tries to standardize scientific classification by using short, single DNA sequence, for example, part of the mitochondrial gene COI to distinguish between species (Larson, 2007). The process begins with extracting DNA and using primers to amplify COI regions from the DNA extracts via PCR. The sequences attained are compared to the available sequences in Bold and GenBank databases to find the mislabeled products. Energy management, the first environmental issue, is how much japans waste's energy on the cell phones and insulations in their homes. Nuclear power, the second environmental issue, nuclear power provides 35% of electricity and we all remember the earthquake that destroyed half of them that was a big issue. The Kashiwazaki–Kariwa Nuclear Power Plant was completely shut down for 21 months following an earthquake in 2007. The 2011 earthquake and tsunami caused the failure of cooling systems at the Fukushima I Nuclear Power Plant on March 11 and a nuclear emergency was declared. This was the first time a nuclear emergency had been declared in Japan, and 140,000 residents within 20 km of the plant were evacuated. The total amount of radioactive material released is unclear, as the crisis is on going. On 6 May 2011, Prime Minister ordered the Hamaoka Nuclear Power Plant be shut down, as an earthquake of magnitude 8.0 or higher is likely to hit the area within the next 30 years. Fishing and Whaling, the third environmental issue, is about the food the fish way too much, and there is less fish and whales in their water for them to keep doing it. In the Japanese diets, fish and its products are more prominent than other types of meat. Because of the depletion of ocean stocks in the late 20th century, Japan 's total annual fish catch has been diminishing rapidly. Japan, along with the United States and the European Union, occupies the large part of international fish trade. Japanese fish catches were the third in the world in 2000, following China and Peru. • 60. The main topics ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In short, the Pacific Islands are effectively the epicenter of tuna fishing globally. Regional Value of Tuna Catch: In the Pacific Islands region, the annual catch volume and volume per catch have increased over the last thirty years (figure 2). Despite some annual variation, the catch volume has increased roughly ten–fold from 1970 to 1999. Additionally, the value has increased dramatically from approximately USD375 million in 1982 (Clark 1983), to USD1.2 billion in 1993 (World Bank 1995), to USD1.7 billion in 1995 (FFA 1996), and to USD1.9 billion in 1998 (Van Santen and Muller 2000). These figures clearly indicate the importance of tuna fishing to the Pacific Islands' economies, with the current annual tuna harvest valued at USD1.9 billion. The countries and regions within the Pacific Islands have a combined GDP of USD17 billion (SPC 1998b), thus the annual tuna harvest represents roughly 11 percent of the region's GDP. Employment: Much like the Energy sector in Canada, the tuna fishing industry is a massive employer in the Pacific Islands. With a lack of formal jobs in the region, the importance of tuna–related employment drastically increases. The areas of employment that tuna fishing generates includes: direct employment on a fishing vessel, which is extremely labor–intensive, and employment connected to the tuna industry, including indirect spinoff ... • 62. Oceans: The Importance of Preserving this Delicate Marine... The Oceans are the most diverse biomes in the world, for they cover 71% of the planet. Life in the ocean evolved 3 billion years prior than land, and it still has over ¾ of all the habitats on Earth. Humans have always posed threats to the delicate marine environment, yet it still is thriving. Without the marine biome humans and other animals alike would not be in existence, for evolution of the first life would never have occurred, and we would not have a strong enough atmosphere to support life. The geography of the ocean varies greatly all the way from the deep Abyssal Plain, to the shallow waters of Coral Reefs. The Ocean is divided into four different zones/sub zones, the Euphotic, Bathyal, Abyssal, Hadal, and Andaphotic. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... These sources are beneficial to humans because, it allows us to live our lives the way we do. Minerals and fuel allow us to construct new architecture, the food and water allow us to survive, and the Ocean allows us to trade with other countries easily, which in return promotes a good economy. The Ocean is beneficial to all life on Earth because, it creates a water cycle which allows all animals to survive , for all living organisms need water, and without water there would not be life on Earth now. Humans are working to conserve the ocean by cleaning up oil spills, releasing trapped animals, and cleaning up trash along the shore of the ocean, and even near tributaries which lead into the Ocean. Humans try to conserve the Ocean, although the problems we are working on are caused by us. For example, the BP oil spill occurred in April, and we are still trying to fix the leak, and we still are trying to clean the shores, but we caused these problems ourselves, and it wasn't the Ocean. Our trash washes up on shores and we clean it up in order for the animals to live safely and not get trapped. There are also many more problems which we try to constantly solve. The ocean has many relationships between various animals, but one of the symbiotic relationships in the ocean is commensalism between the clown fish and sea anemones. • 64. Chinatown: Above The Film Noir Genre Essay The viewer sees a private eye and beautiful client. First thought, "It's definitely another Hollywood crime drama." On the surface, Chinatown has all the elements of a film noir: the presence of a beautiful but dangerous woman, otherwise known as the femme fatale, a gritty urban setting, compositional tension (highly contrasting light and dark colors or oblique camera angles), and themes of moral ambiguity and alienation. Chinatown, however, is different. Polanski shot Chinatown with color film, and though his colors do appear especially vivid, color film precludes the contrast intensity that black and white film offers. In addition, Evelyn is not the classic femme fatale. Though Jake mistakes her for her husband's killer at first, Mrs. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It shows how Jake is persistent and dedicated to his job, even if it always seems like he is in over his head. Jake, however, also departs from the film noir tradition when he lets his emotions get the best of him. The greatest example of this is seen during the exchange between him and Evelyn when he is trying to find out the truth about Katherine. Resorting for the first time to violence against a woman, the near desperation with which Jake pushes Evelyn to confess is an expression of his fears and anxieties about being completely lost amidst the lies that surround him. The result is the humanization of Jake Giddes' character. He simply is not perfect, and ultimately fails to see the bigger picture of what he is involved with until . While classic film noir is characterized by high compositional tension, or low lit black and white cinematography, Polanski managed to infuse Chinatown with that sense of corruption and nihilism so prevalent in noir in bright Southern California despite employing a photographic element previously thought antithetical to film noir style: color film stock. The dominant colors of Chinatown are brown, gray, and black, which can be seen as an indication of the film's allusion to the noir tradition of black–and–white. The various hues of brown and gold can be seen throughout the film, from clothing to homes ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 66. Should the Risks of Fish Intake Override the Benefits? Essay Many consumers today are confused about the controversy about fish and its health effects. Researchers have discovered that fish contains methyl mercury, polychlorinated biphenyls (PCB), and dioxins that may put one's health at risk ("Harvard College"). The industrial processes cause mercury to be released into the air, then the chemical ends up in the lakes. Therefore, the contaminants come from bacteria that live in lakes that are then absorbed in species. When people consume fish, they are also taking in bacteria that came from unspecialized lakes indirectly through fish consumption. Although people could be harmed by eating contaminated fish, a diet that includes fish can also benefit the body. Fish has become especially popular ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It is a very rare case where people get diagnosed with a significantly high consumption of mercury that leads to severe conditions: death. The main reason that death occurs in this situation is because the large amounts of fish that people are consuming, meaning eating fish consistently on a daily basis. Nevertheless, people should still be aware of the types of fish they eat that are high or low in mercury concentration. Despite the beneficial health that fish provides, one also needs to be aware of the appropriate amount of fish to take that will not lead to adverse health effects. Fish an important source of protein that contains omega–3 fats that is essential and healthful for the human heart. One of the most known evidence of the effects that omega–3 brings is the prevention of heart disease ("Harvard School"). In one study, "the participants with the highest mercury exposure appeared to be at slightly less risk of heart attack and stroke than those with the lowest exposure, a trend that is probably due to the benefits of fish consumption rather than the mercury itself, the researchers say" (Gardner). The intake of omega–3 into the body helps to support the heart because fish barely contains any saturated fats. Therefore, fish is healthier compared to other poultry and preserved meat products. • 68. Hospital Services Case The General Assembly of the State of Albacore is considering implementing a new bill that could potentially affect the overall workflow at Hospital Bass. The bill will order that at least 30 percent of a hospital's workforce has to speak Spanish, which includes all hospitals within the state of Albacore. The unfortunate part is that any healthcare facility that does not follow this law will only receive 50 percent of Medicare reimbursements compared to the 80 percent they are now receiving. The issue with this bill for Hospital Bass is that currently only 15 percent of the workforce speaks Spanish, meaning the facility would need to hire twice as many employees once the bill is initiated. Not only would it be a challenge to hire these employees, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Their reasoning is the fact that our hospital cannot afford to hire more employees who speak Spanish. The budget would not be able to handle this and individuals not unionized could potentially lose their job due to the influx of employees who are needed to speak Spanish. Therefore, cuts have to be made somewhere in order to survive the precautions of the new bill that would pass. The potential conflicts the stakeholders have is not obeying the new bill or opposing the bill, which would cause a great decrease of federal reimbursement through government insurance, especially when two thirds of your patients have this insurance. Therefore, opposing the bill or not obeying it could have a dramatic effect on Hospital Bass and that is where the contractor comes into play to offer recommendations that will benefit the hospital in the greatest way. A few brief recommendations to help with the current issue would be to offer a better benefit package for our current and future employees, implement quality surveys to all patients in order to give us adequate feedback, and to provide the largest numbers of Spanish speaking employees in the Emergency department because of the high percentage of patients who speak the language. • 70. The Problem of Overfishing One of the growing issues that has been plaguing our marine habitats is the problem of overfishing. What this means is that we are taking fish from the ocean, at rates that are far higher than the fish can replenish themselves, which is a problem because fish and other marine organisms are very important for millions of people around the world. They are relied on because sometimes it is the only way to have access to a good source of proteins and fatty acids throughout the day. The key for sustainable management revolves around the idea of the economics of the catch. What this means is that we can maximize the fish that we obtain from the oceans while still allowing them to replenish year after year. The way that it works is that fish have a different growth rate depending on where they lie in regards to their carrying capacity. When they are at their carrying capacity they have a very low growth rate so this would be an ideal time to catch fish. The other ideal time to catch fish is when they are at half of their carrying capacity because this is when they have the highest growth rate. If this was done, fisheries would be able to catch the same number of individuals as the fish produced that year, while the population remained at half the carrying capacity. One way that we limit how many fish can be caught is by imposing quotas and monitoring catch numbers. There are two problems with how it works now. The first is that in reality the fish populations are ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 72. The Old Man And The Sea Character Analysis In The Old Man and the Sea by Ernest Hemingway, the reader is introduced to the plight of Santiago, a very old fisherman who has gone eighty–four days without catching anything. Santiago believes that he will catch a giant fish on his eighty–fifth day of this streak, and gain back his luck. He does catch a fish of over a thousand pounds while at sea over the course of a few days. However, his luck doesn't last and the giant fish is devoured by hungry sharks while Santiago is on his way back home. This gives readers mixed feelings over Santiago was a winner or a loser at the end of the book, all things considered. Although Santiago was very unsuccessful throughout the story, he was ultimately victorious because he broke his eighty–four day streak of catching nothing, he survived against all odds, and even though it had been ruined, he brought home the biggest fish the town had ever seen. In the past, Santiago was revered as a great fisherman, a local legend. He knew many tricks, and was very patient and strong–willed. Once his unlucky streak started up, however, his reputation was more or less thrown to the wolves. Hemingway even says on Page 11 that many of the other fishermen made fun of Santiago, and on Page 9 that it had been 84 days since he had caught anything ("He was an old man who fished alone in a skiff in the Gulf Stream and he had gone eighty–four days now without taking a fish."). This is especially important for the caregivers who are not protected by a union, since they may not have someone who will be there to legally represent them. Getting the other local hospital involved is also important too because they will be just as effected as we are, some hospitals like Grouper will be even more effected considering that only 2% of their caregiver population speaks Spanish. If the health committee sees that not only do the employees not agree with the bill but the hospitals do as well they may reconsider their bill. Once this is over we can look at the lists and see where they all are the same interests and see where they are all different. During this negotiation between the stakeholders a discussion about what they are willing to give up and what they want for exchange or what do they requirements or want to see happen in the facilities if they do decide to change. After all groups have met I would take the compilation of the request and concerns to the General Assembly so they can see what the other options of the bill are. Recommendations: Legal Risks and Potential Malpractice Issues Legal issues and malpractice issues shaped my decision tremendously because most of the actions that the hospital would have to take are illegal or could become illegal at any point of time. To me the legal issues outweigh the benefit that the General Assembly is trying to accomplish. This can seem challenging sometimes, but it becomes a bit more manageable once you learn the facts. There are several forms of diabetes. Diabetes can occur at any age. Insulin is a hormone produced by special cells, called beta cells, in the pancreas, an organ located in the area behind your stomach. Insulin is needed to move blood sugar (glucose) into cells, where it is stored and later used for energy. In pt. with diabetes, these cells produce little or no insulin. • 78. Critical Appreciation Of The Old Man And The Sea "The Old Man and the Sea" is a striking yet frustrating novel about an elderly Cuban fisherman and his struggles with unluckiness. His supposed misfortune is depicted through the loss of a relationship, the loss of his sanity, and the loss of the largest fish he had ever caught. Written by Ernest Hemingway in 1952 then awarded the Pulitzer prize in 1953, "The Old Man and the Sea" became a fascinating work of literary art that portrays a pessimistic story of defeat. Within the first few sentences of chapter one, the Cuban fisherman, named Santiago is clearly struggling with his profession, and had gone eighty–four days without catching a single fish. Also observed in chapter one, was the presence of a young boy that had befriended the aged fisherman. Sadly, the boy had been commanded by his father to leave Santiago and board a "lucky" boat, due to forty days of misfortune with the old man. Santiago loved the boy, and did not want to him abandon their fishing trips together, but he respected the boy's father. The young lad was not in favor of the separation either, but obeyed his father's wishes by casting his lines out with another boat. When time allowed, the boy still checked in with his friend to keep him company. Throughout the book, the old man is almost constantly thinking about the boy, or how situations would be better if the boy were present. The loss of the boy represents Santiago's first misfortune, the loss of a relationship. On the eighty–fifth day of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
